Abstract Lead white is one of the most important pigments in human history, and its synthesis has promoted the development of art and cosmetics. The corrosion approach to synthesize lead white appeared in Greece during the fourth century BCE, and since then lead white has been produced on a large-scale and widely used in painting and cosmetics across Europe. However, when and how synthetic lead white appeared in east Eurasia and whether it was also involved with beauty remained unclear. Here, we investigate some white cosmetic residues from the Liangdaicun site during the eighth century BCE in northern China through FTIR, XRD, SEM-EDS, radioactive and stable carbon isotope analyses. The results show that these residues were the earliest synthesized lead white in the world to date, which was produced by the precipitation method in solution distinct from the corrosion method practiced in ancient Greece. Thus, the synthesis of lead white should have evolved independently in east and west Eurasia during the first millennium BCE. The mass production of synthetic lead white with lower cost promoted the widespread use of white makeup in China and the Mediterranean World, which triggered a cosmetic revolution and highlighted that the pursuit of beauty stimulated the development of chemistry in human history, especially the earliest wet chemistry practice in China.

Abstract Cytosolic double‐stranded DNA (dsDNA) is a danger signal that is tightly monitored and sensed by nucleic acid‐sensing pattern recognition receptors. We study the inflammatory cascade on dsDNA recognition and investigate the neuroprotective effect of cyclic GMP‐AMP (cGAMP) synthase (cGAS) antagonist A151 and its mechanisms of neuroprotection in a mouse model of experimental stroke. Here, we found that cerebral ischemia promoted the release of dsDNA into the cytosol, where it initiated inflammatory responses by activating the cGAS. A151 effectively reduced the expression of cGAS, absent in melanoma 2 (AIM2) inflammasome, and pyroptosis‐related molecules, including caspase‐1, gasdermin D, IL‐1β, and IL‐18. Furthermore, mice treated with A151 showed a dampened immune response to stroke, with reduced counts of neutrophils, microglia, and microglial production of IL‐6 and TNF‐α after MCAO. Moreover, A151 administration significantly reduced infarct volume, attenuated neurodeficits, and diminished cell death. Notably, the protective effect of A151 was blocked in a microglia‐specific cGAS knockout mouse. These findings offer unique perspectives on stroke pathogenesis and indicate that inhibition of cGAS could attenuate brain inflammatory burden, representing a potential therapeutic opportunity for stroke.

High strength and high ductility are often mutually exclusive properties for structural metallic materials. This is particularly important for aluminum (Al)-based alloys which are widely commercially employed. Here, we introduce a hierarchical nanostructured Al alloy with a structure of Al nanograins surrounded by nano-sized metallic glass (MG) shells. It achieves an ultrahigh yield strength of 1.2 GPa in tension (1.7 GPa in compression) along with 15% plasticity in tension (over 70% in compression). The nano-sized MG phase facilitates such ultrahigh strength by impeding dislocation gliding from one nanograin to another, while continuous generation-movement-annihilation of dislocations in the Al nanograins and the flow behavior of the nano-sized MG phase result in increased plasticity. This plastic deformation mechanism is also an efficient way to decrease grain size to sub-10 nm size for low melting temperature metals like Al, making this structural design one solution to the strength-plasticity trade-off. Pollution by heavy metals limits the area of land available for cultivation of food crops. A potential solution to this problem might lie in the molecular breeding of food crops for phytoremediation that accumulate toxic metals in straw while producing safe and nutritious grains. Here, we identify a rice quantitative trait locus we name cadmium (Cd) accumulation in leaf 1 (CAL1), which encodes a defensin-like protein. CAL1 is expressed preferentially in root exodermis and xylem parenchyma cells. We provide evidence that CAL1 acts by chelating Cd in the cytosol and facilitating Cd secretion to extracellular spaces, hence lowering cytosolic Cd concentration while driving long-distance Cd transport via xylem vessels. CAL1 does not appear to affect Cd accumulation in rice grains or the accumulation of other essential metals, thus providing an efficient molecular tool to breed dual-function rice varieties that produce safe grains while remediating paddy soils. The effect of two different annealing processes on the microstructure and barrier-forming ability of Cu-Zr alloy films has been investigated. Cu-Zr alloy films were deposited directly onto SiO/Si substrates via direct current magnetron sputtering and subsequently annealed by the vacuum annealing process (VAP) or rapid annealing process under argon atmosphere at temperatures 350°C, 450°C, and 550°C. Then, the microstructure, interface characteristics, and electrical properties of the samples were measured. After annealing, the samples showed a preferential (111) crystal orientation, independent of the annealing process. After two annealing methods, Zr aggregated at the Cu-Zr/SiO interface and no serious interdiffusion occurred between Cu and Si. The leakage current measurements revealed that the samples annealed by VAP show a higher reliability. According to the results, the vacuum annealing has better barrier performance than the rapid annealing when used for the fabrication of Cu-based interconnects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Synchronization is an important issue for a communication system to decode the received symbols correctly. Basically, synchronization process includes the time and frequency offsets prediction and compensation. If there are Time Offset (TO) and Carrier Frequency Offset between the Transmitter (Tx) and Receiver (Rx), OFDM system will suffer the Inter-Symbol Interference and Inter-Carrier Interference that degrade the system performance dramatically. In this paper, we propose a low complexity time synchronization and sector identification (ID) method using the unique null sub-carrier feature of the Primary Synchronization Signal and the Second Synchronization Signal for the LTE system. Combined with the down-sampling technique, computer simulations and experimental results show that the proposed method can predict the TO and sector ID correctly and has the advantage of very low computational complexity. The effect of chloride ion concentration, pH value, and grain size on the pitting corrosion resistance of a new ferritic stainless steel with 15wt% Cr was investigated using the anodic polarization method. The semiconducting properties of passive films with different chloride ion concentrations were performed using capacitance measurement and Mott-Schottky analysis methods. The aging precipitation and intergranular corrosion behavior were evaluated at 400-900°C. It is found that the pitting potential decreases when the grain size increases. With the increase in chloride ion concentration, the doping density and the flat-bland potential increase but the thickness of the space charge layer decreases. The pitting corrosion resistance increases rapidly with the decrease in pH value. Precipitants is identified as Nb(C,N) and NbC, rather than Cr-carbide. The intergranular corrosion is attributed to the synergistic effects of Nb(C,N) and NbC precipitates and Cr segregation adjacent to the precipitates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the therapeutic efficacy of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and surgical resection for the patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods: From January 2002 to June 2009, 87 HCC patients with 3 or fewer nodules, no more than 3 cm in diameter, and liver function of Child-Pugh class A or B were enrolled. Forty-seven underwent RFA while 40 underwent surgical resection. Follow-up ranged from 6 to 69 months. We compared the overall and disease-free survival rate, recurrence patterns, and the complications between the two groups. Survival probabilities were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Results: At the end of the study, 67 patients were alive. The 1-, 2- and 3-year overall cumulative survival rates after RFA and surgical resection were 91.0%, 76.7%, 69.7% and 90.0%, 82.9%, 75.4%, respectively. The difference between the two survival curves was not statistically significant (χ = 0.99, P = 0.32). Forty-three patients suffered intrahepatic recurrence, including 25 cases after RFA and 18 cases after surgical resection. The 1-, 2-, and 3-year disease-free survival rates after radiofrequency ablation and surgical resection were 57.3% vs 71.1%, 40.3% vs 45.7%, and 35.3% vs 30.9%. The difference between the two groups was not statistically significant (χ = 0.06, P = 0.80). Cox hazard model indicated tumor size and Child-Pugh scoring were significant risk factors for local tumor progression, while tumor numbers was risk factor for intrahepatic distant recurrence. Conclusion: RFA is as effective as surgical resection for the treatment of patients with HCC (≤ 5 cm), especially for those who are not suitable for curative resection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The solubility and digestion efficiency are two crucial factors that might affect the identification of integral membrane proteins (IMPs). In this work, 1% ( v/ v) ionic liquid (IL), 1-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIM BF), added in NHHCO buffer (pH 8.3), was applied as a sample preparation buffer for IMPs analysis. Compared to the commonly used sodium dodecyl sulfate and methanol methods, the number of identified IMPs from rat brain by microcolumn reversed phase liquid chromatography (μRPLC)-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS) was improved by over three times, which might be due to the fact that BMIM BF offered high solubilizing ability for IMPs and good compatibility for tryptic digestion. Furthermore, compared to Rapigest and urea methods, with BMIM BF method, the number of identified IMPs from rat brain could be improved 25% and 80%, respectively, which might be contributed to the good solubilizing ability and high thermal stability of such IL. With the sample treated by BMIM BF method, by 2D-nanoSCX-RPLC-ESI-MS/MS, 1,450 non-redundant proteins and 7,978 unique peptides were identified from rat brain, and 418 proteins contained at least one predicted transmembrane domain, with false discovery rates of less than 1% for peptide identification, and at least two identified unique peptides per protein. Tumor development has long been known to resemble abnormal embryogenesis. The ESC self-renewal gene NANOG is purportedly expressed in some epithelial cancer cells and solid tumors, but a casual role in tumor development has remained unclear. In order to more comprehensively elucidate the relationship between human Nanog and tumorigenesis, the hNanog was ectopically expressed in the 293 cell line to investigate its potential for malignant transformation of cells both in vitro and in vivo. Here we provide compelling evidence that the overexpression of hNanog resulted in increased cell proliferation, anchor-independent growth in soft agar, and formation of tumors after subcutaneous injection of athymic nude mice. Pathologic analysis revealed that these tumors were poorly differentiated. In analysis of the underlying molecular mechanism, two proteins, FAK and Ezrin, were identified to be upregulated in the hNanog expressing 293 cells. The microstructures and mechanical properties of coarse grain heat-affected zone (CGHAZ) of domestic X70 pipeline were investigated. The weld CGHAZ thermal cycles having different cooling time Δ t were simulated with the Gleeble-1500 thermal/mechanical simulator. The Charpy impact absorbed energy for toughness was measured, and the corresponding fractographs, optical micrographs, and electron micrographs were systematically investigated to study the effect of cooling time on microstructure, impact toughness, and fracture morphology in the CGHAZ of domestic X70 pipeline steel during in-service welding. The results of simulated experiment show that the microstructure of CGHAZ of domestic X70 pipeline steel during in-service welding mainly consists of granular bainite and lath bainite. Martensite-austenite (M-A) constituents are observed at the lath boundaries. With increase in cooling time, the M-A constituents change from elongated shape to massive shape. The reduction of toughness may be affected by not only the M-A constituents but also the coarse bainite sheaves. Accelerating cooling with cooling time Δ t of 8 s can be chosen in the field in-service welding X70 pipeline to control microstructures and improve toughness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SO, NO, and PM are the major outdoor air pollutants in China, and most of the cities in China have regulatory monitoring sites for these three air pollutants. In this study, we developed a land use regression (LUR) model using regulatory monitoring data to predict the spatial distribution of air pollutant concentrations in Jinan, China. Traffic, land use and census data, and meteorological and physical conditions were included as candidate independent variables, and were tabulated for buffers of varying radii. SO, NO, and PM concentrations were most highly correlated with the area of industrial land within a buffer of 0.5 km ( R=0.34), the distance from an expressway ( R=0.45), and the area of residential land within a buffer of 1.5 km ( R=0.25), respectively. Three multiple linear regression (MLR) equations were established based on the most significant variables ( p<0.05) for SO, NO, and PM, and R values obtained were 0.617, 0.640, and 0.600, respectively. An LUR model can be applied to an area with complex terrain. The buffer radii of independent variables for SO, NO, and PM were chosen to be 0.5, 2, and 1.5 km, respectively based on univariate models. Intercepts of MLR equations can reflect the background concentrations in a certain area, but in this study the intercept values seemed to be higher than background concentrations. Most of the cities in China have a network of regulatory monitoring sites. However, the number of sites has been limited by the level of financial support available. Rice blast, caused by the fungal pathogen Magnaporthe oryzae, is a devastating disease of rice worldwide. Among the 85 mapped resistance (R) genes against blast, 13 have been cloned and characterized. However, how these genes originated and how they evolved in the Oryza genus remains unclear. We previously cloned the rice blast R-genes Pi2, Pi9, and Piz- t, and analyzed their genomic structure and evolution in cultivated rice. In this study, we determined the genomic sequences of the Pi2/9 locus in four wild Oryza species representing three genomes (AA, BB and CC). The number of Pi2/9 family members in the four wild species ranges from two copies to 12 copies. Although these genes are conserved in structure and categorized into the same subfamily, sequence duplications and subsequent inversions or uneven crossing overs were observed, suggesting that the locus in different wild species has undergone dynamic changes. Positive selection was found in the leucine-rich repeat region of most members, especially in the largest clade where Pi9 is included. We also provide evidence that the Pi9 gene is more related to its homologues in the recurrent line and other rice cultivars than to those in its alleged donor species O. minuta, indicating a possible origin of the Pi9 gene from O. sativa. Comparative sequence analysis between the four wild Oryza species and the previously established reference sequences in cultivated rice species at the Pi2/9 locus has provided extensive and unique information on the genomic structure and evolution of a complex R-gene cluster in the Oryza genus. The influence of secondary carbides precipitation and transformation on the secondary hardening of laser melted high chromium steels was analyzed by means of scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The microstructure of laser melted high chromium steel is composed of austenite with supersaturated carbon and alloy elements and granular interdendritic carbides of type M23C6. Secondary hardening of the laser melted layer begins at 450 °C after tempering, and the hardness reaches a peak of 672HV at 560 °C and then decreases gradually. After tempering at 560 °C, a large amount of lamellar martensite was formed in the laser melted layer with a small quantity of thin lamellar M3C cementite due to the martensitic decomposition. The stripy carbides precipitating at the grain boundaries were determined to be complex hexagonal M7C3 carbides and face centered cubic M23C6 carbides. In addition, the granular M23C6 carbides and fine rod-like shaped M7C3 carbides coexisted within the dendrites. As a result, the combined effects of martensitic transformation, ultrafine carbide precipitations, and dislocation strengthening result in the secondary hardening of the laser melted layer when the samples were tempered at 560 °C. A monitoring program of particulate matter was conducted at eight sampling sites in four highly industrialized cities (Shenyang, Anshan, Fushun, and Jinzhou) of Liaoning Province in Northeast China to identify the major potential sources of ambient PM2.5. A total of 814 PM2.5 and PM2.5–10 samples were collected between 2004 and 2005. All PM samples were collected simultaneously in four cities and analyzed gravimetrically for mass concentrations. A sum of 16 elemental species concentrations in the PM samples were determined using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy. Annual means of PM2.5 concentrations ranged from 65.0 to 222.0 μg m−3 in all the eight sampling sites, and the spatial and seasonal variations were discussed. Enrichment factors were calculated, and Cr, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb will be pollution-derived elements. Site-to-site comparisons of PM2.5 species in each city were examined using coefficient of divergence, revealing that the two sites in each city are similar in elemental species. Principle component analysis was used for preliminary source analysis of PM2.5. Three or four factors in each city were isolated, and similar sources (crustal source, coal combustion, vehicle exhaust, iron making, or some other metallurgical activities) were identified at four cities. Abstract  Rice architecture is an important agronomic trait that affects grain yield. We characterized a tillering dwarf mutant d88 derived from Oryza sativa ssp. japonica cultivar Lansheng treated with EMS. The mutant had excessive shorter tillers and smaller panicles and seeds compared to the wild-type. A reduction in number and size of parenchyma cells around stem marrow cavity as well as a delay in the elongation of parenchyma cells caused slender tillers and dwarfism in the d88 mutant. The D88 gene was isolated via map-based cloning and identified to encode a putative esterase. The gene was expressed in most rice organs, with especially high levels in the vascular tissues. The mutant carried a nucleotide substitution in the first exon of the gene that led to the substitution of arginine for glycine, which presumably disrupted the functionally conserved N-myristoylation domain of the protein. The function of the gene was confirmed by complementation test and antisense analysis. D88, thus, represents a new category of genes that regulates cell growth and organ development and consequently plant architecture. The potential relationship between the tiller formation associated genes and D88 is discussed and future identification of the substrate for D88 may lead to the characterization of new pathways regulating plant development. In this paper, we shall introduce and study a family of multivariate interpolating refinable function vectors with some prescribed interpolation property. Such interpolating refinable function vectors are of interest in approximation theory, sampling theorems, and wavelet analysis. In this paper, we characterize a multivariate interpolating refinable function vector in terms of its mask and analyze the underlying sum rule structure of its generalized interpolatory matrix mask. We also discuss the symmetry property of multivariate interpolating refinable function vectors. Based on these results, we construct a family of univariate generalized interpolatory matrix masks with increasing orders of sum rules and with symmetry for interpolating refinable function vectors. Such a family includes several known important families of univariate refinable function vectors as special cases. Abscisic Acid (ABA) is an important phytohormone involved in abiotic stress resistance in plants. A group of bZIP transcription factors play important roles in the ABA signaling pathway in Arabidopsis. However, little is known about the function of their orthologs in rice, where they may hold a great potential for developing drought resistant food crops. In this study, our phylogenetic analysis showed that this group of bZIPs was evolutionarily conserved between Arabidopsis and rice, which implies that they may share similar functions. We demonstrated with quantitative RT-PCR that the expressions of most of these OsbZIPs were significantly induced by ABA, ACC, and abiotic stresses. OsbZIP72, a member of this group, was proved to be an ABRE binding factor in rice using the yeast hybrid systems. We showed that it could bind to ABRE and transactivate the downstream reporter genes in yeast, and the transactivity was depending on its N-terminal region. Transgenic rice overexpressing OsbZIP72 showed a hypersensitivity to ABA, elevated levels of expression of ABA response gene such as LEAs, and an enhanced ability of drought tolerance. These results suggest that OsbZIP72 plays a positive role in drought resistance through ABA signaling, and is potential useful for engineering drought tolerant rice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract  A comparative study was made of enzymatic acylation of konjac glucomannan with vinyl esters under ultrasonic irradiation and shaking in organic solvent tert-butanol. Among the 13 enzymes selected, Novozym 435 exhibited the highest acylation activity towards KGM whether under ultrasonic irradiation or shaking. The application of ultrasonic irradiation instead of shaking during the acylation led to improvement in the initial reaction rate, yield and degree of substitution of the modified KGM. Appropriate ultrasound power (100 W) and water activity (0.75) were found to accelerate enzymatic reaction. The acceleration effect of ultrasound on Novozym 435-catalyzed acylation decreased with an increase in the chain length of the acyl donors from C2 to C18. Moreover, the acylation of KGM in tert-butanol was proved to be a regioselective one, with C6-OH being acylated. Compared with shaking, ultrasound did not change regioselectivity of Novozym 435 in the acylation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract  Total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) spectroscopy was used to investigate the adsorption behavior of meso-tetrakis(p-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin (TPPS) at the glass/water interface in the presence of a cationic surfactant (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB) far below the critical micelle concentration. The adsorption model of TPPS at the glass/water interface in the presence of low concentration of CTAB was proposed, which was different from the adsorption of TPPS in the presence of micelles of CTAB at the glass/water interface. TPPS and CTAB did not form stable complex at the interface in dilute system. The interfacial species of TPPS were analyzed by comparing the spectra of TPPS at the glass/water interface and in the aqueous phase. The influences of the TPPS concentration, the CTAB concentration, and the pH values on the interfacial fluorescence spectra and intensities were studied. It was demonstrated that electrostatic interaction and hydrophobicity performed an important role on the adsorption of TPPS in the presence of CTAB. The different effects of TPPS concentration on the adsorption behaviour of TPPS at different pH were observed for the first time. It was found that the adsorption isotherms of TPPS at glass/water interface could fit Freundlich equation at pH 7.1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chlorate resistance is one of the reliable characters in Indica/Japonica classification. To understand the genetic basis of chlorate resistance is very important for revealing the evolutionary mechanism of Indica/Japonica differentiation. In this study, a doubled haploid (DH) population derived from anther culture of ZYQ8/JX17, a typical Indica and Japonica hybrid, was used as the genetic material to investigate chlorate sensitivity of the parents and DH lines. The quantitative trait loci (QTLs) of chlorate resistance were analyzed based on the molecular linkage map of this population. Total of 3 QTLs (qCHR-2, qCHR-8 and qCHR-10) for chlorate resistance were detected on chromosomes 2, 8 and 10, respectively. A QTL × QTL epistatic interaction was detected between qCHR-2 and qCHR-10. Genes involved in nitrogen assimilation, such as nitrate reduction, molybdenum cofactor biosynthesis and nitrate transport were strong candidates of QTLs for chlorate resistance. A putative nitrate reductase gene (8611.t00011), and two putative nitrate reductase genes (9319.t00010 and 9319.t00012) were in the genomic region of qCHR-2, and qCHR-8, respectively, and a putative nitrate transporter gene (756.t00011) was in the region of qCHR-10. The expression of 8611.t00011, 9319.t00010 and 756.t00011 were confirmed by the corresponding cDNAs, and 2 in/del and 12 SNPs in the coding regions of these three genes were found between Indica (cv. 9311) and Japonica (cv. Nipponbare) in silico. These results indicated that these three genes were candidates of the chlorate resistance QTLs. An in/del in the coding region of 8611.t00011 was used to develop a new PCR marker. A polymorphism was detected between JX17/Nipponbare and ZYQ8/9311. This polymorphism corresponds to the chlorate sensitivity of Nipponbare and 9311. This marker was located between Y8007R and RM250 on chromosome 2 in the DH population, where qCHR-2 was also located. Oryza officinalis (CC, 2n=24) and Oryza rhizomatis (CC, 2n=24) belong to the Oryza genus, which contains more than 20 identified wild rice species. Although much has been known about the molecular composition and organization of centromeres in Oryza sativa, relatively little is known of its wild relatives. In the present study, we isolated and characterized a 126-bp centromeric satellite (CentO-C) from three bacterial artificial chromosomes of O. officinalis. In addition to CentO-C, low abundance of CentO satellites is also present in O. officinalis. In order to determine the chromosomal locations and distributions of CentO-C (126-bp), CentO (155 bp) and TrsC (366 bp) satellite within O. officinalis, fluorescence in situ hybridization examination was done on pachytene or metaphase I chromosomes. We found that only ten centromeres (excluding centromere 7 and 2) contain CentO-C arrays in O. officinalis, while centromere 7 comprises CentO satellites, and centromere 2 is devoid of any detectable satellites. For TrsC satellites, it was detected at multiple subtelomeric regions in O. officinalis, however, in O. rhizomatis, TrsC sequences were detected both in the four centromeric regions (CEN 3, 4, 10, 11) and the multiple subtelomeric regions. Therefore, these data reveal the evolutionary diversification pattern of centromere DNA within/or between close related species, and could provide an insight into the dynamic evolutionary processes of rice centromere. The GS3 locus located in the pericentromeric region of rice chromosome 3 has been frequently identified as a major QTL for both grain weight (a yield trait) and grain length (a quality trait) in the literature. Near isogenic lines of GS3 were developed by successive crossing and backcrossing Minghui 63 (large grain) with Chuan 7 (small grain), using Minghui 63 as the recurrent parent. Analysis of a random subpopulation of 201 individuals from the BC3F2 progeny confirmed that the GS3 locus explained 80–90% of the variation for grain weight and length in this population. In addition, this locus was resolved as a minor QTL for grain width and thickness. Using 1,384 individuals with recessive phenotype (large grain) from a total of 5,740 BC3F2 plants and 11 molecular markers based on sequence information, GS3 was mapped to a DNA fragment approximately 7.9 kb in length. A full-length cDNA corresponding to the target region was identified, which provided complete sequence information for the GS3 candidate. This gene consists of five exons and encodes 232 amino acids with a putative PEBP-like domain, a transmembrane region, a putative TNFR/NGFR family cysteine-rich domain and a VWFC module. Comparative sequencing analysis identified a nonsense mutation, shared among all the large-grain varieties tested in comparison with the small grain varieties, in the second exon of the putative GS3 gene. This mutation causes a 178-aa truncation in the C-terminus of the predicted protein, suggesting that GS3 may function as a negative regulator for grain size. Development of crop varieties with high nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) is imperative for sustainable agriculture. Understanding how plant genes respond to low N stress is essential for formulating approaches to manipulating genes for improving NUE. In this study we analyzed the expression profiles of an indica rice cultivar Minghui 63 at seedling stage at 20 min, 1 and 2 h after low N stress with the normal N as the control, using a microarray of 11,494 rice ESTs representing 10,422 unique genes. While no significant difference was detected in the leaf tissue, a total of 471 ESTs were detected as responsive to low N stress in the root tissue with 115 ESTs showing up-regulation and 358 ESTs showing down-regulation. The analysis of expression profiles after low N stress identified following patterns: (1) the genes involved in photosynthesis and energy metabolism were down-regulated rapidly; (2) many of the genes involved in early responses to biotic and abiotic stresses were up-regulated while many other stress responsive genes were down-regulated; (3) regulatory genes including transcription factors and ones involved in signal transduction were both up- and down-regulated; and (4) the genes known to be involved in N uptake and assimilation showed little response to the low N stress. The challenges for future studies are to characterize the functional roles of the low N stress responsive genes in N metabolisms, including the large number of genes presently with unknown functions. Anewwavelet-based geometric mesh compression algorithm was developed recently in the area of computer graphics by Khodakovsky, Schröder, and Sweldens in their interesting article [23]. The new wavelets used in [23] were designed from the Loop scheme by using ideas and methods of [26, 27], where orthogonal wavelets with exponential decay and pre-wavelets with compact support were constructed. The wavelets have the same smoothness order as that of the basis function of the Loop scheme around the regular vertices which has a continuous second derivative; the wavelets also have smaller supports than those wavelets obtained by constructions in [26, 27] or any other compactly supported biorthogonal wavelets derived from the Loop scheme (e.g., [11, 12]). Hence, the wavelets used in [23] have a good time frequency localization. This leads to a very efficient geometric mesh compression algorithm as proposed in [23]. As a result, the algorithm in [23] outperforms several available geometric mesh compression schemes used in the area of computer graphics. However, it remains open whether the shifts and dilations of the wavelets form a Riesz basis of L2(&reals;2). Riesz property plays an important role in any wavelet-based compression algorithm and is critical for the stability of any wavelet-based numerical algorithms. We confirm here that the shifts and dilations of the wavelets used in [23] for the regular mesh, as expected, do indeed form a Riesz basis of L2(&reals;2) by applying the more general theory established in this article. Abstract The wild species of the genus Oryza offer enormous potential to make a significant impact on agricultural productivity of the cultivated rice species Oryza sativa and Oryza glaberrima. To unlock the genetic potential of wild rice we have initiated a project entitled the ‘Oryza Map Alignment Project’ (OMAP) with the ultimate goal of constructing and aligning BAC/STC based physical maps of 11 wild and one cultivated rice species to the International Rice Genome Sequencing Project’s finished reference genome – O. sativa ssp. japonica c. v. Nipponbare. The 11 wild rice species comprise nine different genome types and include six diploid genomes (AA, BB, CC, EE, FF and GG) and four tetrapliod genomes (BBCC, CCDD, HHKK and HHJJ) with broad geographical distribution and ecological adaptation. In this paper we describe our strategy to construct robust physical maps of all 12 rice species with an emphasis on the AA diploid O. nivara – thought to be the progenitor of modern cultivated rice. In the paper, the distribution characteristics of strong earthquakes in Sichuan-Yunnan area and their geological tectonic background, especially the relation to Sichuan-Yunnan and Sichuan-Qinghai crustal blocks have been studied. The main results are: a) Strong earthquakes in Sichuan-Yunnan area distribute mainly in Sichuan-Yunnan and Sichuan-Qinghai crustal blocks; b) Most of strong earthquakes of the two blocks distribute mainly along their boundary faults; c) A few strong earthquakes are not obviously related to active faults. It shows that the relation between strong earthquakes and geological tectonics can be very complex; d) There is a certain correlativity for seismic activities among boundary faults of the two blocks, but they have different features; e) There are some anomalous changes of velocity structures in the deep crust of boundary faults of the two blocks. Many boundary faults, especially Longmenshan fault, cut obviously the Moho discontinuity. The Xianshuihe fault, a typical strike-slip fault, has no obvious indication of cutting the Moho discontinuity, but has distinct low-velocity zone in different depths. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Computational screening of the chromosome-4 sequence of the rice cultivar Nipponbare (Oryza sativa L. japonica) revealed 1,844 tandem simple sequence repeats (SSRs) or microsatellites with SSR motifs ≥20 bp and repeated unit length of 1–6 base pairs. Thus SSRs occur once in every 18.8 kb, on the average, on the chromosome with one SSR per 23.8 kb and 16 kb on the short and long arms, respectively. No SSR was detected in the core region of the centromere. Poly(AT)n repeats represented the most abundant and length polymorphic class of SSRs on the chromosome, but it did not occur in the exons. GC-rich trinucleotide repeats were most abundant in the coding regions, representing 71.69% of the SSRs identified in the exons. Two hundred and twenty four SSRs were associated with the repetitive DNA sequences, most of them were poly(AT)n tracts. Sequence variations of SSRs between two cultivars, representing the two subspecies of the Asian cultivated rice indica and japonica, were identified, revealing that divergence and convergence of the two subspecies could be traced by the analysis of SSRs. A rapid method for the speciation of mercury in fish has been described. Organomercurials in benzene extract were separated by glass capillary gas chromatography and detected by atomic absorption spectrometry. Spiked alkylmercury in fish yielded 95% recovery with one single extraction with benzene. The absolute detection limit was about 1.0×10 g mercury.
