Pulmonary complications (PC) are common after esophagectomy and their impact on long-term survival is not defined yet. The present study aimed to assess the effect of postoperative PCs on long-term survival after esophagectomy for cancer. Systematic review of the literature through February 1, 2023, was performed. The included studies evaluated the effect of PC on long-term survival. Primary outcome was long-term overall survival (OS). Cancer-specific survival (CSS) and disease-free survival (DFS) were secondary outcomes. Restricted mean survival time difference (RMSTD), hazard ratio (HR), and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were used as pooled effect size measures. Eleven studies were included (3423 patients). Overall, 674 (19.7%) patients developed PC. The RMSTD analysis shows that at 60-month follow-up, patients not experiencing PC live an average of 8.5 (95% CI 6.2–10.8; p < 0.001) months longer compared with those with PC. Similarly, patients not experiencing postoperative PC seem to have significantly longer CSS (8 months; 95% CI 3.7–12.3; p < 0.001) and DFS (5.4 months; 95% CI 1.6–9.1; p = 0.005). The time-dependent HRs analysis shows a reduced mortality hazard in patients without PC at 12 (HR 0.6, 95% CI 0.51–0.69), 24 (HR 0.64, 95% CI 0.55–0.73), 36 (HR 0.67, 95% CI 0.55–0.79), and 60 months (HR 0.69, 95% CI 0.51–0.89). This study suggests a moderate clinical impact of PC on long-term OS, CSS, and DFS after esophagectomy. Introduction: Debate exists concerning the impact of complete mesocolic excision (CME) on long-term oncological outcomes. The aim of this review was to condense the updated literature and assess the effect of CME on long-term survival after right colectomy for cancer. Methods: PubMed, MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched through July 2023. The included studies evaluated the effect of CME on survival. The primary outcome was long-term overall survival. Restricted mean survival time difference (RMSTD), hazard ratio (HR), and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were used as pooled effect size measures. GRADE methodology was used to summarize the certainty of evidence. Results: Ten studies (3665 patients) were included. Overall, 1443 (39.4%) underwent CME. The RMSTD analysis shows that at 60-month follow-up, stage I–III CME patients lived 2.5 months (95% CI 1.1–4.1) more on average compared with noCME patients. Similarly, stage III patients that underwent CME lived longer compared to noCME patients at 55-month follow-up (6.1 months; 95% CI 3.4–8.5). The time-dependent HRs analysis for CME vs. noCME (stage I–III disease) shows a higher mortality hazard in patients with noCME at 6 months (HR 0.46, 95% CI 0.29–0.71), 12 months (HR 0.57, 95% CI 0.43–0.73), and 24 months (HR 0.73, 95% CI 0.57–0.92) up to 27 months. Conclusions: This study suggests that CME is associated with unclear OS benefit in stage I–III disease. Caution is recommended to avoid overestimation of the effect of CME in stage III disease since the marginal benefit of a more extended resection may have been influenced by tumor biology/molecular profile and multimodal adjuvant treatments. Dinocampus coccinellae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) can parasitize over 50 species of ladybeetles (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), including the invasive Harmonia axyridis. The biological invasion success of H. axyridis has been in part attributed to weak control by natural enemies (Enemy Release Hypothesis). The main aim of this study was to examine (i) the intraspecific variation in field parasitism of D. coccinellae attacking H. axyridis populations in its native (Asia) and invasive ranges (North and South America and Europe), and (ii) the interspecific variation in field parasitism of D. coccinellae attacking the invasive H. axyridis and native hosts in the US (Coleomegilla maculata), Chile (Eriopis chilensis), and Italy (Coccinella septempunctata). We also characterized the genetic differentiation of D. coccinellae populations (from different host species and geographical areas) to infer its putative origin. Parasitism of D. coccinellae on invasive H. axyridis and native hosts were remarkably similar at 4–7%, suggesting a low level of resistance, not supporting the enemy release hypothesis. However, parasitism of H. axyridis was much lower in its native than in the invaded areas studied, indicating that under certain field conditions, it may contribute to the control of invasive populations of H. axyridis. Genetic relationships showed widespread D. coccinellae haplotypes with no host-associated genetic structure, consistent with a generalist parasitoid. Genetic relationships of the haplotypes also suggest a complex introduction scenario, with multiple introductions into America and an inferred European origin for D. coccinellae. With the invasion or local occurrence of Bemisia tabaci and Tuta absoluta in recent decades, they both have become two major insect pests of tomato crops in many countries. The biological control of these two pests through heteropteran predators, e.g., Nesidiocoris tenuis or Macrolophus pygmaeus, is a key pest management strategy. However, by contrast to M. pygmaeus, N. tenuis could usually cause plant damage and yield loss. The joint use of these two mirids for pest management has not been described yet, although it may be helpful in reducing the side effects of N. tenuis on crop (owing to competitive and/or agonistic interactions between the two species). In this study, we compared the abundance of predators and pests in treatments with N. tenuis and M. pygmaeus together versus N. tenuis alone and in the presence of B. tabaci only or B. tabaci and T. absoluta. We also measured necrotic rings and tomato flower production in these four treatments. We found that the joint use of both mirid predators together led to (1) a reduced overall mirid density and (2) a sustained biocontrol efficiency, when compared to the use of N. tenuis alone. In addition, plant feeding activities of mirids were significantly reduced when predators were used jointly (vs. N. tenuis alone). The applicability of zoophytophagous predators as biocontrol agents could be facilitated by simultaneously releasing two (or more) heteropteran predator species instead of a single one. Zoophytophagous hemipteran predators provide relevant biological control services and their applications are consolidated in greenhouse pest management. The use of plant essential oils (EOs) for sustainable crop protection is being currently promoted. However, further knowledge of the potential side effects of EOs on predatory mirids (Hemiptera: Miridae) is required. Here, we evaluated the non-target impact of four EOs (anise, fennel, garlic and lavender) on the generalist predator Nesidiocoris tenuis (Reuter) in the laboratory. The baseline toxicity of EOs was firstly assessed on N. tenuis adults following topical contact exposure. Then, the predator reproduction and orientation behavior was tested following the exposure to three estimated EO lethal concentrations (LC1, LC10 and LC30). Garlic EO had the lowest estimated LCs (e.g., LC30 1.34 mg mL−1), being thus the most toxic compound among the tested EOs. The estimated LC30s for lavender, anise and fennel EOs were 2.75, 4.55 and 5.17 mg mL−1, respectively. The fertility and the orientation behavior of N. tenuis females was negatively affected by all the EOs at the highest tested concentration. Nevertheless, anise EO at LC1 and LC10 caused no sublethal effects on N. tenuis. In the last decade, Ultra-minimally invasive surgery (UMIS) including both minilaparoscopic (MH) and percutaneous (PH) endoscopic surgery achieved widespread use around the world. Despite UMIS has been reported as safe and feasible surgical procedure, most of the available data are drawn from retrospective studies, with a limited number of cases and heterogeneous surgical procedures included in the analysis. This literature review aimed to analyze the most methodologically valid studies concerning major gynecological surgeries performed in UMIS. A literature review was performed double blind from January to April 2021. The keywords 'minilaparoscopy'; 'ultra minimally invasive surgery'; '3 mm'; 'percutaneous'; and 'Hysterectomy' were selected in Pubmed, Medscape, Scopus, and Google scholar search engines. PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines were followed for the drafting of the systematic review. The systematic literature research provided 298 studies, of which 9 fell within the inclusion criteria. Two hundred ninety-six total patients were included, 148 for both PH and MH groups. Median age (48 years), BMI (24 kg/m2), OT (90 min), EBL (50 ml), time to discharge (1 day), self scar evaluation (10/10), and VAS (3/10) were reported. The most frequent intraoperative complication in both the PH and MH groups was surgical bleeding. The UMIS approaches were feasible and safe even for complex gynecological procedures. Operative times and complications were superimposable to the "classical" minimally invasive approaches reported in the literature. The reported results apply only to experienced surgeons. The prevalence of vaping, also known as using e-cigarettes, vapes and vape pens, has prompted a demand for reliable, evidence-based research. However, published literature on the topic of vaping often raises concerns, characterized by serious flaws and a failure to adhere to accepted scientific methodologies. In this narrative review, we analyze popular vaping studies published in medical journals that purport to evaluate the association of vaping and smoking cessation, smoking initiation or health outcomes. We analyzed 24 included studies to identify the questions they claimed to address, stated methods, manner of implementation, discussions, and stated conclusions. After critical appraisal, we noted a multiplicity of flaws in these studies, and identified patterns as to the nature of such flaws. Many studies lacked a clear hypothesis statement: to the extent that a hypothesis could be inferred, the methods were not tailored to address the question of interest. Moreover, main outcome measures were poorly identified, and data analysis was further complicated by failure to control for confounding factors. The body of literature on "gateway" theory for the initiation of smoking was particularly unreliable. Overall, the results and discussion contained numerous unreliable assertions due to poor methods, including data collection that lacked relevance, and assertions that were unfounded. Many researchers claimed to find a causal association while not supporting such findings with meaningful data: the discussions and conclusions of such studies were, therefore, misleading. Herein, we identify the common flaws in the study design, methodology, and implementation found in published vaping studies. We present our summary recommendations for future vaping research. To assess the feasibility and the safety of the ultra-minimally invasive (U-MIS) approaches in gynecology, we compared our experience in percutaneous assisted hysterectomy (PSS-H) with a series of 3 mm mini-laparoscopy hysterectomy (m-LPS-H). 126 patients affected by benign and malignant gynecological conditions were considered eligible for minimally invasive hysterectomy: 80 patients received PSS approach and 46 m-LPS approach. For both groups, we evaluated intra and perioperative outcomes, post-operative pain and cosmetic outcomes. The baseline characteristics were comparable between the two study groups. As well, no differences were reported in the clinical indications for hysterectomy, principally fibroids/adenomyosis, endometrial hyperplasia and early stage endometrial cancer. The median operative time was 88.5 (40–190) minutes for PSS-H group and 95.0 (42–231) minutes in m-LPS-H group (p = 0.131). No differences were detected in median estimated blood loss (p = 0.104) as well, in the uterine manipulator usage (p = 0.127) between the two different surgical approaches. Only 1 (2.2%) conversion to standard laparoscopy occurred in m-LPS-H group (p = 0.691). One intra-operative complication was recorded 1 (1.3%) in the PSS-H group (p = 0.367). The post-operative early complication was recorded in five cases of PSS-H group (p = 0.158), none for m-LPS-H procedures. The results in post-operative pain detection was statistically significant after 4 h in favor of m-LPS-H group (p = 0.001). After 30 days no differences in cosmetic satisfaction were detected between the two groups (p = 0.206). The capacity to assess invasion risk from potential crop pests before invasion of new regions globally would be invaluable, but this requires the ability to predict accurately their potential geographic range and relative abundance in novel areas. This may be unachievable using de facto standard correlative methods as shown for the South American tomato pinworm Tuta absoluta, a serious insect pest of tomato native to South America. Its global invasive potential was not identified until after rapid invasion of Europe, followed by Africa and parts of Asia where it has become a major food security problem on solanaceous crops. Early prospective assessment of its potential range is possible using physiologically based demographic modeling that would have identified knowledge gaps in T. absoluta biology at low temperatures. Physiologically based demographic models (PBDMs) realistically capture the weather-driven biology in a mechanistic way allowing evaluation of invasive risk in novel areas and climes including climate change. PBDMs explain the biological bases for the geographic distribution, are generally applicable to species of any taxa, are not limited to terrestrial ecosystems, and hence can be extended to support ecological risk modeling in aquatic ecosystems. The aim of this study is to describe the state of gender representation in surgery across Ecuador. A survey of female surgeons in Ecuador was conducted, collecting information regarding demographics, academics, family and relationships, sexual harassment, discrimination and gender preference of one's own surgeon. All statistical analysis was conducted with IBM-SPSS version 25. The platform, Worlde, was used for discourse analysis. Of the 144 female surgeons who received the survey, 105 responded. Almost half of respondents had a higher degree in addition to their surgical training. Leadership positions in the workplace were reported to be held by males in 66.7% of cases. Relationship problems caused by the surgical profession were reported by 72.4% of respondents. Feelings of guilt for not dedicating enough time to family were reported by 72.4%, and a feeling of not being supported by their partner was reported by 31.4% of respondents. Sexual harassment was described by 55.2%, and discrimination by 48.6% of the female surgeons in our sample. The majority (89.5%) would choose surgery again if given the opportunity. Asobara japonica (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), Ganaspis brasiliensis and Leptopilina japonica (Hymenoptera: Figitidae) are Asian larval parasitoids of spotted wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae). This study evaluated these parasitoids' capacity to attack and develop from 24 non-target drosophilid species. Results showed that all three parasitoids were able to parasitize host larvae of multiple non-target species in artificial diet; A. japonica developed from 19 tested host species, regardless of the phylogenetic position of the host species, L. japonica developed from 11 tested species; and G. brasiliensis developed from only four of the exposed species. Success rate of parasitism (i.e., the probability that an adult wasp successfully emerged from a parasitized host) by the two figitid parasitoids was low in hosts other than the three species in the melanogaster group (D. melanogaster, D. simulans, and D. suzukii). The failure of the figitids to develop in most of the tested host species appears to correspond with more frequent encapsulation of the parasitoids by the hosts. The results indicate that G. brasiliensis is the most host specific to D. suzukii, L. japonica attacks mainly species in the melanogaster group and A. japonica is a generalist, at least physiologically. Overall, the developmental time of the parasitoids increased with the host's developmental time. The body size of female A. japonica (as a model species) was positively related to host size, and mature egg load of female wasps increased with female body size. The South American tomato pinworm, Tuta absoluta, (SATP) is now a devastating pest worldwide of crops in the family Solanaceae. Most prior studies of SATP's thermal biology were based on populations from tropical regions, and proved unsuitable for explaining its invasion of large areas of the Palearctic. A more holistic approach to the analysis of its thermal biology is essential background for developing models to assess its invasive potential. Our studies found that SATP has lower and upper thermal thresholds (θL = 5.37 °C and θU = 35.69 °C, respectively) than South American populations used in prior studies (θL = 7.38 °C and θU = 33.82 °C). Age-specific life tables were used to estimate the effects of temperature on its demographic parameters. Diapause in SATP had not been characterized prior to our study. We found facultative diapause in pupae developing from larvae exposed to relatively low temperatures (i.e., 2 and 5 °C) and short-day length for different exposure periods. The strength of diapause was measured as an increase in post-treatment developmental times of pupae (i.e., degree days) that on average were 2.45–3-fold greater than of pupae reared at favorable temperatures. A lower developmental threshold and a facultative diapause increase the invasive potential of SATP in temperate areas. Since the first robotic single-site hysterectomy was performed, the research focused on the use of robotic single-site surgery (RSSS) for all gynecological conditions. This review aims to examine the studies available in the literature on RSSS in gynecology both for benign and malignant indications. The systematic review was carried out in agreement with the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses statement (PRISMA). All the articles were grouped into three sets based on the surgical indication (Group 1, 2, and 3 for benign, malignant, and mixed diseases, respectively). Two hundred and fifty total studies were analyzed, and 27 articles were included in the review. A total of 1065 patients were included in the analysis. Of these, 605 patients were included in group 1, 260 in group 2, and 200 in group 3. Ten (1.7%) patients with benign pathology, 16 (6.2%) patients with malignant disease, and 5 (2.5%) patients with both diseases developed major complications. Two (0.3%) patients in group 1, 3 (1.2%) patients in group 2 and 5 (2.5%) in group 3 were converted to a different type of surgery. No significant differences were found between groups for BMI (p = 0.235), operative time (p = 0.723), estimated blood loss (EBL) (p = 0.342), and hospital stay (p = 0.146). The complications and conversions incidence through pooled analysis showed a higher general conversion rate (p = 0.012) in group 3 (3.0%) and higher complications rate (p = 0.001) in group 2 (5.3%) compared to the other groups. RSSS seems to be a feasible and safe procedure for all gynecological surgical procedures. Ecologists study how populations are regulated, while scientists studying biological pest control apply population regulation processes to reduce numbers of harmful organisms: an organism (a natural enemy) is used to reduce the population density of another organism (a pest). Finding an effective biological control agent among the tens to hundreds of natural enemies of a pest is a daunting task. Evaluation criteria help in a first selection to remove clearly ineffective or risky species from the list of candidates. Next, we propose to use an aggregate evaluation criterion, the pest kill rate, to compare the pest population reduction capacity of species not eliminated during the first selection. The pest kill rate is the average daily lifetime killing of the pest by the natural enemy under consideration. Pest kill rates of six species of predators and seven species of parasitoids of Tuta absoluta were calculated and compared. Several natural enemies had pest kill rates that were too low to be able to theoretically reduce the pest population below crop damaging densities. Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is a key insect pest, seriously damaging tomato crops and inducing tremendous yield and economic losses. The area of origin of this insect is in South America, while it has recently become an invasive pest in Europe, Africa, Asia and Central America. In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, there has been growing evidence that biological control through field releases of egg parasitoids and predatory mirids generally induces promising control results of T. absoluta whenever the natural enemy species as well as the timing and release rates are suitably chosen. As such, application of botanical and/or microbial pesticides represent a potential control approach to be adopted against T. absoluta. This would decrease the detrimental side effects on non-target beneficial arthropods typically exhibited by hazardous chemical insecticide applications. The scientific literature emphasizing the (i) releases of parasitoids and/or predators, (ii) applications of biopesticides, and (iii) combination « release of parasitoid and/or predator + biopesticide treatments and/or other biorational tools», as sustainable control options of T. absoluta throughout the MENA region over the last decade, is comprehensively reviewed and unraveled herein. Neuro-anatomy of the perineum has gained renewed attention due to its significance in the transanal procedures for rectal cancer (eg TaTME). Surgeons embarking on this technique must have sophisticated knowledge and a precise anatomical understanding of the perineum before proceeding with this reversed rectal approach. We report anatomical observations deriving from a relevant experience in the colorectal surgery field. The collective multicenter experience of the present study is clinically relevant and based on the rectal and transanal resections performed in colorectal centers of excellence from Greece, UK, and Italy over the last 10 years (2011–2020). From the original anatomical and intraoperative observations derived from collective cases operated by this multicenter group of colorectal surgical centers in three European countries, data were retrieved and analyzed in collaboration with specialist researchers of human anatomy and interpreted for their clinical significance and potential use for preoperative planning and intraoperative guidance during TaTME. This descriptive article demonstrates in detail the neurogenic pathways encountered in the perineum and pelvic cavity during transanal procedures. Specific anatomical and topographic implications are also included serving as a guide for colorectal surgeons to perform a nerve-sparing procedure. transanal approach for rectal excision offers new insights into the complex pelvic and perineal neuroanatomy while the procedure itself remains a challenge for surgeons. Preoperative anatomical planning and 3D reconstruction may help in anticipating technical difficulties, resulting in more precise surgical dissections and decreased postoperative complications. Spotted wing drosophila (SWD) causes significant economic loss in fruit crops to growers worldwide. There is immediate need for efficacious and selective monitoring tools that can detect infestations early. Previously, volatile organic compounds derived from apple were studied and a quinary chemical component blend (QB) was identified as the key SWD attractant in a blueberry orchard in the United States. This study's aim was to determine whether previously observed QB efficacy, selectivity, and early detection levels could be attained within raspberry and cherry fields in the USA and Europe. Results demonstrated that sticky trap baited QB dispenser provided earlier SWD detection potential than the usually adopted apple cider vinegar (ACV) trap. The number of SWD captured/trap by QB baited trapping systems was significantly lower than that of the ACV trap. However, percent SWD/trap of QB baited traps was same within cherry. Lower non-target capture will save farmer/grower's labor and time allocated to traps installation and drosophila species identification. Within the USA, SWD selectivity of QB baited liquid traps was consistently greater than sticky trap in raspberry field, suggesting that the QB dispenser can be an alternative to the standard ACV lure and that trap design could improve selectivity further. Insect parasitoids can attack phylogenetically related hosts that share similar physiological properties and defense mechanisms and, more importantly, overlapping ecological niches. Here, host preferences of three parasitoids, Asobara japonica (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), Ganaspis brasiliensis and Leptopilina japonica (Hymenoptera: Figitidae), were examined on two closely related hosts, Drosophila suzukii and D. melanogaster (Diptera: Drosophilidae). Each parasitoid's rate of successful parasitism (or offspring survival) on these hosts was first compared in no choice tests. Results showed that A. japonica had higher parasitism levels than G. brasiliensis and L. japonica, and that offspring survival for all parasitoids was similar on both host species. Host preferences in choice tests were then compared, with each parasitoid presented with the two host species at different proportions of host abundance. None of the parasitoids showed host preference or host switching, even though these parasitoids have different degrees of host specificity, from more generalized (A. japonica) to more specialized (G. brasiliensis). Further examination of parasitoid olfactory responses showed all three parasitoid species were attracted to volatiles from fruit infested by either host species and showed no preference to either D. suzukii or D. melanogaster. Results suggest that the hosts' phylogenetical similarity and a lack of any obvious fitness costs for offspring survival may reduce host preference by these larval parasitoids. The spotted wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii Matsumura (Diptera: Drosophilidae), is an invasive pest native to Asia that has recently invaded Europe and the Americas. This pest can seriously compromise fruit production in infested crops and has a remarkable ability to invade new areas with a diverse range of environments. We report for the first time D. suzukii infestations in African crops. We sampled 101 fields cultivated with soft-skinned fruits in two regions of northwestern Morocco. Morphological and molecular analyses confirmed the occurrence of D. suzukii in this area. In 2017 and 2018, approximately 15% of the surveyed farms growing small berries were infested by D. suzukii. A total of 61.11% of the surveyed raspberry fields were infested, followed by blueberries (22.22%), strawberries (11.11%) and mulberries (5.56%). Peak infestations were between March and June and in November and December. We carried out preliminary mass trapping in a raspberry tunnel, and of the two traps used, the red-colored trap baited with baker's yeast and sugar was the most effective. The results are discussed in the light of the invasion potential for the African continent and integrated pest management (IPM) perspectives for soft fruit production in Morocco. Nanotechnology is a new field in the pesticide industry. Nanopesticides represent an emerging technological tool that offers a range of benefits including increased efficacy, durability, and reduction in the amounts of used active ingredients. However, due to the lack of studies on the toxicity and the sublethal effects on pests and natural enemies, the extent of action and fate of these nanopesticdes is still not fully understood limitting thus their wide use. In this study, we encapsulated the pirimicarb insecticide using nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC) and investigated the toxicity and sublethal effects (LC25) of the resulting nanocapsules against the cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae (Linnaeus) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and its natural enemy the green lacewings Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae). Nanoencapsulation of pirimicarb enhanced 12.6-fold its toxicity to cabbage aphids compared to its commercial formulation. Furthermore, analysis of the age-stage, two-sex life table showed that negative effects on the B. brassicae aphid population growth were observed on F0 and F1 generations when aphids of parental (F0) generation were exposed to subelethal dose (LC25) of both formulations of pirimicarb. However, negative effects from sublethal exposure to the commercial and nanoformulated pirimicarb resulted in significant reduction on the net reproductive rate, intrinsic rate of natural increase, and finite rate of increase of the green lacewings C. carnea. Our findings indicate that the approaches and assumptions used to assess the risks of conventional insecticides may not apply for nanopesticides. The aim of this review is to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of uterine manipulators in facilitating total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH). A literature search in MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, UpToDate, SpringerLink, ClinicalKey and Elsevier ScienceDirect databases was performed, and articles describing TLH with or without the use of uterine manipulators were retrieved. Complications related to the use of uterine manipulators are numerous, and although uterine manipulator seems to facilitate TLH, the procedure without a uterine manipulator seems to have a comparable safety and effectiveness, although evidence based on a direct comparison of the two approaches is limited without available controlled trials. Uterine manipulator may provide support in cases of large uteri, severe endometriosis, recto vaginal adhesions and regional anesthesia, while its use may increase complications in cases of vaginal stenosis and nulliparity. Therefore, to perform TLH, the surgeon should individualize for each case if uterine manipulator is needed and which manipulator best suits the surgical procedure requirements and case characteristics. Harmonia axyridis Pallas (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is an invasive generalist predator, which has been used as a biological model to investigate several research questions and is also an effective biocontrol agent against agricultural pests. Its laboratory colonies are often maintained on natural prey that are costly, and thus alternative dietary regimens are required. We studied the influence of four different food regimens on the developmental and reproductive life history traits of H. axyridis, including body size and the population demographic parameters. The tested diet regimes were: Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) eggs, a commercial mix of E. kuehniella and Artemia sp. (Anostraca: Artemiidae) cysts, a liver-based artificial diet, and the natural prey, Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae). The food regimes affected the investigated life parameters of H. axyridis in various ways. Larvae developed successfully and in the shortest time on moth eggs, but for H. axyridis reared on the artificial diet development was not successful. The mixture of moth eggs and brine shrimp cysts supported the rearing of H. axyridis. However our findings suggest its use only when no other suitable feedstuff is available. Recent evidence has proven the non-inferiority of laparoscopic complete mesocolic excision (LCME) to open complete mesocolic excision (OCME) with regard to feasibility and oncological safety. However, the differences in survival benefits between the 2 procedures have not been assessed. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether or not one procedure was superior to the other using updated meta-analysis. A systematic search for relevant literature was performed in Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane library and Google scholar databases. This meta-analysis included retrospective studies and one randomised controlled trial comparing LCME to OSCME. LCME to OCME was evaluated using updated meta-analysis. The Newcastle–Ottawa scale was used to assess the methodologic quality of the studies. Fixed- and random-effects models were used, and survival outcomes were assessed using the inverse variance hazard ratio (HR) method. Operative time was significantly shorter in the OCME cohort than in the LCME cohort. Blood loss, wound infections, time to flatus, time to oral feeding, and length of hospital stay were significantly shorter in the LCME cohort than in the OCME cohort. The 1-, 3-, and 5-year overall survivals were better in the LCME cohort than in the OCME cohort ([HR = 0.37 (0.22, 0.65); p = 0.004], [HR = 0.48 (0.31, 0.74); p = 0.008], and [HR = 0.64 (0.45, 0.93); p = 0.02], respectively). No difference in the 1-year disease-free survival (DFS) between the 2 procedures was observed ([HR = 0.68 (0.44, 1.03); p = 0.07]). In contrast, the LCME cohort had better 3- and 5-year DFS rates than those of the OCME cohort ([HR = 0.63 (0.42, 0.97), p = 0.03] and [HR = 0.68 (0.56, 0.83), p = 0.001], respectively). The results of the present study must be interpreted cautiously because the included studies were retrospective from single centres. Therefore, selection, institutional and national bias may have influenced the results. LCME is associated with the faster postoperative recovery and some better potential survival benefits than OCME. The combined use of chemicals and biological control is not always a successful strategy owing to the potential side effects on biocontrol agents. Lethal and sublethal effects of three commonly used insecticides were assessed on adult and immature stages of the egg parasitoid Trichogramma brassicae Bezdenko (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae). Recommended field concentrations of chlorantraniliprole, phosalone and spinosad caused mortality on preimaginal stages by 24, 87, and 98%, respectively. Lethal effects on parasitoid adults exposed to the insecticide dry residues were estimated as median lethal concentrations (LC50) that were 13.28, 0.25, and 0.03 µg a.i. ml−1 for chlorantraniliprole, phosalone, and spinosad, respectively. The effect of a low lethal concentration (LC30) of the compounds was evaluated on various adult biological traits, such as longevity, fecundity, emergence rate and other life table parameters. All compounds caused detrimental effects on all the estimated demographical indexes. Chlorantraniliprole affected the net reproductive rate, mean generation time and doubling time in comparison to the control; while, phosalone and spinosad adversely affected all assessed parameters. Phosalone and spinosad significantly reduced gross reproductive rate, net reproductive rate, intrinsic rate of increase, finite rate of increase, mean generation time and doubling time and reduced longevity, fecundity, emergence rate related to other biological parameters in comparison with control. The results suggest that all compounds are not fully compatible with the activity of T. brassicae, and that the inclusion of chlorantraniprole, spinosad and phosalone into Integrated Pest Management (IPM) involving this parasitoid has to be avoided. Nevertheless, further studies in open field conditions and on a multiple generation scale are necessary for providing a more definitive conclusion on the IPM suitability of the three tested insectcides. Laparoscopic mini/one anastomosis gastric bypass (MGB/OAGB) is an increasingly used bariatric surgical procedure. This surgical technique is effective in terms of both weight loss and the resolution of comorbidities, but it is not without complications. To report our experience in MGB/OAGB, assessing comorbidities and complications, and to illustrate post-surgical anatomy and radiological appearance of complications, a single-centre retrospective study of 953 patients undergoing MGB/OAGB between January 2005 and September 2018 was done. The inclusion criteria: body mass index (BMI) of 40 kg/m2 or higher or BMI between 35 and 40 kg/m2 with significant comorbidities not responsive to medical therapies. In the postoperative period, all patients were evaluated with clinical and laboratory tests and radiological examinations (upper gastrointestinal series, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging). Median weight was 126.69 kg and mean BMI was 49.4 kg/m2. Regarding comorbidities, 37.2%, 52.8%, 46.7% and 43.2% of patients presented with preoperatively diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), hypertensive disease, dyslipidaemia and obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS), respectively. Median excess weight loss at 6, 12, 24 and 60 months after surgery was 33.45%, 53.81%, 68.75% and 68.80%, respectively. The remission of comorbidities was 91.4% for T2DM, 93.7% for hypertensive disease, 90.3% for dyslipidemia and 93.4% for OSAS. Early and late complication rates identified with radiological examinations were 1.5% and 1.6%, respectively. MGB/OAGB was effective for weight loss and comorbidities remission. Summary: Purpose: To review the diagnosis and the treatment of both subclinical and overt hypothyroidism in old people, which could represent a challenge for the clinicians. Methods: Narrative literature review. An extensive literature search was performed using the databases of Scopus, Medline through PubMed, and Google Scholar from January 1975 to May 2019. The search terms were "hypothyroidism," "older adults," "elderly," and "myxedema." Results: Hypothyroidism is more common among older subjects in comparison to the younger counterparts. The hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis and its hormones undergo significant changes due to the physiological aging process. For a correct diagnosis of hypothyroidism in old people clinicians must take such age-related changes into account. Conclusions: The administration of replacement therapy in older adults should consider frailty, polypharmacy and a high risk to develop overtreatment symptoms. Honeydew is a sugar-rich food source produced by sap-feeding insects, notably by major pests such as aphids and whiteflies. It is an important alternative food source for the adult stage of various key natural enemies (e.g., parasitoids), but it may be used also as food by agricultural pests. Necremnus tutae is an idiobiont parasitoid, and it is the most abundant larval parasitoid associated with the South American tomato pinworm, Tuta absoluta, in recently invaded European areas. The impact of N. tutae on T. absoluta populations was evaluated under greenhouse conditions with and without the presence of a honeydew producer, the aphid Macrosiphum euphorbiae. In addition, laboratory experiments were performed to evaluate the longevity of N. tutae and T. absoluta adults when fed with water, honey or honeydew produced by the aphid. In the greenhouse, N. tutae effectively reduced T. absoluta population by the end of the experiment, and this independently of the presence of the aphid; still the presence of M. euphorbiae led to delayed and reduced T. absoluta population peak when controlled by the parasitoid (there was a fourfold increase in parasitoid density in presence of aphid). The longevity of both N. tutae and T. absoluta females increased in the presence of honeydew (when compared to water only) under laboratory conditions; it hinted that honeydew could be used by an herbivore as T. absoluta. The interactions between the two phytophagous species showed contrasting effects, and this mostly independently of parasitoid presence. Tuta absoluta had no impact on aphid population dynamics. By contrast, the production of T. absoluta larvae was higher in the first part of the experiment as the adults lived longer (feeding on aphid honeydew) and produced more larvae. In the second part of the experiment, there were fewer T. absoluta larvae in the presence of the aphid, likely owing to resource competition and/or negative plant-mediated indirect interactions. We demonstrated that honeydew producers could impact parasitoid-host population dynamics both through direct and indirect interactions and that potential positive effects of a sugar food source toward a pest can be nullified in the long term by other negative effects occurring simultaneously. Background: The purpose of our analysis was to compare the results of treatment in patients who underwent resection for colorectal carcinoma. Methods: In the period from 1/1/1991 to 31/12/2000 1478 patients with colorectal carcinoma underwent potentially curative resection. We divided them into two 5-year period groups according to different treatment regimes. The 5-year net survival rate was estimated, where the net survival is the probability of survival derived solely from the cancer-specific hazard. Results: In a 10-year period, we resected 1478 patients. The 5-year net survival rate for R0-resected patients with colon cancer increased from 76.3 to 85.2% between the periods 1991–1995 and 1995–2000. The 5-year net survival rate for R0-resected patients with rectal cancer also increased from 67.5 to 73% in the same period. Conclusion: A comparison of the 5-year net survival rate for R0-resected patients with colorectal cancer increased in the last period from 1995 to 2000 compared with the period from 1991 to 1995. In multivariate analysis, early stage at diagnosis and adjuvant chemotherapy was both associated with better net survival after surgery with curative intent. The objective of the study was to review the reported cases of uncommon benign uterine tumors managed by laparoscopy. Medline database was searched using predefined search terms linked to atypical leiomyomas, leiomyoma variants, laparoscopy and morcellation. Quality of articles was assessed using Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal tool. Due to heterogeneity in reporting characteristics of the patients, radiological findings, macroscopic findings, histological characteristics and follow-up, we performed a narrative synthesis. We included 109 cases of leiomyoma variants managed by laparoscopy. This stands for an incidence of 2.5% out of all the included laparoscopic management of leiomyomas. These cases were approached as classic leiomyoma. Only after the final histological results that their uncommon aspect was diagnosed. Intra-operatively, the management was similar to that of leiomyoma, with either myomectomy or hysterectomy performed depending on each individual case. Follow-up of these cases was variable: one case (0.9%) recurred as peritoneal sarcoma after 5 years of follow-up. It is important for the gynecologist, radiologist and pathologist to be aware about leiomyoma variants trying to diagnose them preoperatively. The development of new strategies to control pest insects is required, in combination with conventional pesticides or replacing them. Essential oils produced from botanical extracts used in management programs should be effective against pests and selective to natural enemies. Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is one of the most destructive pests of solanaceous crops in the world, and a possible management strategy consists of releases of the predator Nesidiocoris tenuis (Hemiptera: Miridae), along with botanical applications. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of Prev-am® oil on T. absoluta offspring, either with or without the predator N. tenuis, as well as the oil's effects on N. tenuis predatory behavior and longevity. The oil's effects were compared with distilled water (control) and a synthetic pesticide (lambda-cyhalothrin). The response of populations to lambda-cyhalothrin was similar to that with Prev-am®, compared to the control, showing that N. tenuis had higher capacity to reduce T. absoluta populations. The survival analysis of predators exposed to Prev-am® indicates that none of the concentrations differed significantly from the control. In addition, the canonical variate analysis indicated significant overall differences in the predator behavior submitted to different treatments, suggesting that synthetic pesticide treatment affected predator behavior when compared to control and Prev-am®. Reduction in predatory voracity of N. tenuis adults exposed to leaves treated with pesticide and biopesticide was significant compared to the control treatment. We conducted a review of published information on Tuta absoluta parasitoids for the Neotropical region to (1) corroborate species records, (2) analyze associations including the T. absoluta, other insect and plant hosts and (3) identify research directions for enhancing their use as biological control agents. The literature review shows more than 50 species or morphospecies of Hymenoptera associated with T. absoluta, but less than a half (23) could be confirmed as parasitizing T. absoluta. Erroneous reports or invalid names of species, two new species records were found. Over a 100 pests and non-economically important insect and cultivated and non-cultivated plants directly or indirectly interact with T. absoluta in the region. Four T. absoluta parasitoid species include in their host range predatory insects or act as hyperparasitoids, a negative feature considered for a biological control agent. Five larval parasitoids have a narrow host range and could be considered for classical biological control programs in the areas of new invasion. Six Trichogrammatidae species are commercially used in various countries; of those, T. minutum and T. pretiosum are considered to be moderately generalist, being able to exploit several insect hosts. Apart from Apanteles gelechiidivoris and Pseudapanteles dignus, other native species have been the subject of field studies as biological control agents. The review presented here provides useful insights for identifying species that deserve further evaluation as T. absoluta biological control agents through augmentative or conservation strategies in South America, as well as for potential classical biological control programs in other continents. Since its initial detection in Turkey in 2009, the invasive destructive pest South American tomato pinworm Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) has started its new invasion journey to east and invaded most Asian countries. This pest currently causes extensive damage to tomato production and potentially threatens key production areas such as China. To provide an overview of current status of T. absoluta in Asia, we have briefly reviewed the damage and economic impacts by this pest locally and discussed why this species has spread so rapidly among the countries. Moreover, ongoing integrated pest management options are summarized in newly invaded areas with an emphasis of discussing the potential control failures by chemical insecticides. Future research efforts on developing promising management technologies are recommended. Finally, we suggest building a cross-regional network to enhance the sustainable control of this pest. This review aims to define the most appropriate surgical approach and geriatric evaluation for elderly patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). Surgery represents the main treatment for CRC, but elderly cancer patients still represent a challenge for the surgeon due to frequent comorbidities such as cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, which increase operative risk as well as the risk of postoperative morbidity and mortality. Cancer patients with comorbidities show lower survival rates and quality of life, together with higher healthcare costs. There is also evidence that patients with comorbidities sometimes receive modified treatment, compromising optimal care. To optimize treatment, the approach to elderly cancer patients needs a multidisciplinary team to assess preoperative conditions, prevent post-surgical complications and improve outcome, especially for frail patients. Laparoscopic surgery for CRC shows a number of advantages compared to conventional surgery such as less postoperative pain, rapid return to prior activities and a decrease in costs. Recent studies confirm that laparoscopic procedures could be performed safely on both older and younger patients with no difference compared with open surgery as regards morbidity or length of hospital stay. The advantages of endoscopic procedures are well demonstrated in various surgical procedures. In this field, the technological improvement has been significant. One of the most relevant was made by the introduction of robotic surgery that, thanks to the instruments articulation and the precision of movement, made possible to perform even the most complex procedures. The terms "Alf-X" OR "Senhance" OR "robot" OR "robotic" were systematically used to search the PubMed and Scopus databases. The principal findings considered in the present review were: the study design, the number of patients included in each study, operative time, estimated blood loss (EBL), conversion rate to standard laparoscopy (SLPS) or laparotomy (LPT), post-operative complications, post-operative hospital stay, and the possible advantages and disadvantages reported by the authors of the studies. A total of eight studies were considered eligible for the present review. The average operative time for TH reported was 110–140 min. In two case–control studies, the operative time was significantly prolonged (P < 0.05) for robotic procedures when compared with SLPS. The EBL was ≤ 100 ml in all studies. Whereas no statistically significant differences were shown in the two case–control studies in terms of conversion to LPT, all studies were in accordance with the post-operative hospital stay, reporting an average of 2 days for total hysterectomy and 1 day for adnexal surgery. The most frequent peritoneal surface malignancies originate principally by gastric cancer, colorectal cancer and ovarian cancer. Apart from the origin, peritoneal carcinosis (PC) is considered a negative prognostic factor. The hyperthermic intraoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) in the treatment of peritoneal malignancies is considered an attractive method to deliver chemotherapy with enhanced effect directly at the tumor site. The use of such loco-regional approach has proved to improve prognosis of peritoneal carcinomatosis from different origins. Recently, new devices are suitable for loco-regional intraperitoneal chemotherapy as Peritoneal Recirculation System (PRS-1.0 Combat) with CO2 technology. This is a retrospective study with the aim to assess the perioperative outcomes using PRS. Seventeen patients were enrolled affected by colorectal or ovarian cancer. Complete cytoreduction (RT = 0) was achieved for all cases. Median operative time was 420 min (range: 335–665) and median drugs dose used for HIPEC was 137 mg/m2 (115–756). Median EBL was 200 ml (range 50–1000). Median post-operative hospital stay was 9 days (range: 4–24). Treatment-related early complications were recorded in 8 (47.0%) cases and were G1–G2 Major complications occurred in two (11.7%) cases. Nesidiocoris tenuis (Hemiptera: Miridae) is an important biocontrol agent of several key arthropod pests, including the South American tomato pinworm, Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae). However, it can cause economic damage owing to its herbivory. Risk assessment on plant for the predator under different temperature thresholds is necessary for managing its phytophagy in tomato cultivation. We investigated the predator plant damage and its development under the influence of temperature and tomato variety. Ten commercial tomato varieties of different types (round red, small cherry, date baby plum, piccadilly plum and marmande beefsteak) were tested in the laboratory under five constant temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 °C). The amount of fourth-instar nymphs moulted into adults and stem necrotic rings induced by the feeding activity was evaluated. The plant damage differed among the varieties and increased significantly across the temperatures up to 30 °C, with a slight decline at 35 °C. Temperature and variety significantly affected the nymphal development with an increasing number of moulted adults at increasing temperature, but with slight differences among tomato varieties. Our findings provide valuable information on the mirid response to the tested abiotic and biotic factors, which can help in the management and exploitation of N. tenuis as a biocontrol agent in tomato crop. Secondary and tertiary cytoreductive surgery was associated with improved overall survival in platinum-sensitive recurrent ovarian cancer (ROC). Hyperthermic intraoperative intra-peritoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is considered an attractive method in the treatment of ROC to deliver chemotherapy with enhanced effect directly at the tumor site. However, another deserving aspect is the feasibility and the oncologic role of HIPEC repetition. Twelve patients affected by secondary ovarian cancer recurrence previously submitted to cytoreduction followed by HIPEC were enrolled for the present study to receive tertiary cytoreduction followed by HIPEC repetition. The median operative time, including time for HIPEC procedure, was 360 min (range 240–540). Average EBL was 325 ml (from 100 to 500 ml). The median hospital stay was of 5 days, from 4 to 10. Low-grade post operatory complications occurred in 2 patients (16.6%) and high-grade complication in 1 case (8.3%). Drosophila suzukii is native to East Asia and an invasive pest of fruit crops widely established in the Americas and Europe. The lack of effective indigenous parasitoids of D. suzukii in the invaded regions prompted surveys for co-evolved parasitoids in Yunnan Province, China, from 2013 to 2016. From banana-baited traps (2013-2015), 458 parasitoids of drosophilids were reared, comprised of Braconidae (49.56%), Figitidae (37.55%), Diapriidae (7.42%), and Pteromalidae (5.46%). Larval parasitoids included seven braconid species, all Asobara and primarily Asobara mesocauda, and five figitid species, primarily Leptopilina japonica japonica. Pupal parasitoids were the diapriid Trichopria drosophilae and the pteromalid Pachycrepoideus vindemiae. Collections from wild fruits (2016) provided more interesting results. From the puparia of drosophilids collected, comprised of D. suzukii and Drosophila pulchrella, emerged 1354 parasitoids. The larval parasitoids Ganaspis brasiliensis and L. j. japonica were the prevalent species, reaching a fairly high percentage parasitism of fly puparia collected from berries of Rubus foliosus (22.35%), R. niveus (18.81%), Fragaria moupinensis (19.75%), and Sambucus adnata (63.46%). Ganaspis brasiliensis was the dominant species and was collected only from D. suzukii and D. pulchrella-infested fruits and never from banana-baited traps. Molecular analysis showed two G. brasiliensis lineages, which are discussed with respect to previous Japanese collections. Quarantine tests showed that G. brasiliensis developed from D. suzukii and two closely related hosts (Drosophila melanogaster and Drosophila simulans) but did not develop from seven non-target drosophilid species. Seldom have natural enemies been quantified in their ability to control fungivorous arthropods, despite the severe losses they can cause in production of edible fungus. Here, we evaluated the omnivorous predator Orius sauteri (Poppius) when preying on eggs and larvae of the fungivorous sciarid fly Lycoriella pleuroti (Yang et Zhang) and compared against a microencapsulated artificial diet. We also estimated the predation ability of O. sauteri feeding on different densities of L. pleuroti larvae and eggs. The results indicated that O. sauteri successfully oviposit on a mushroom substrate. Moreover, both L. pleuroti eggs and larvae were capable of supporting O. sauteri populations. A type II functional response was observed for both males and females of the predator. Further, moderate values for parameter a′ (instantaneous attack rate) and greatly reduced Th (handling time) revealed a high potential for O. sauteri in suppressing outbreaks of L. pleuroti. This is the first report of a generalist predator feeding and developing within an edible mushroom-pest system. O. sauteri is a prime candidate for testing as a biological control agent, either in inoculative or in inundative release, for targeted suppression of the fungivorous sciarid L. pleuroti. The role of loco-regional treatment of peritoneal carcinomatosis using intraperitoneal chemotherapy is still investigated. Actually, new technologies are suitable for these procedures, especially a new hybrid system using CO2 called Peritoneal Recirculation System (PRS-1.0 Combat). A HIPEC procedure in a porcine model using the PRS system was conducted. The objective of experimentation was to assess the distribution of liquid inside the abdomen, by using methylene blue instead of chemotherapy. Moreover, we positioned six different thermal probes in different abdominal regions inside the abdomen to measure the temperature during procedure. During the procedure, all thermal probes recorded an average temperature of 41.5°. At the end of infusion, the abdomen was emptied and then opened; the tracer distribution was recorded. No technical problems were recorded during the procedure. Good distribution of tracer was recorded. More studies are needed to investigate better this new technology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the introduction of Pap smear screening, the incidence and mortality of cervical cancer (CC) have been reduced drastically in USA and in other western states. Nevertheless, CC still remains the main cause of death from gynecological cancer in developing countries where screening programs are scant or inexistent. This evidence highlights the efficacy of screening, and the wide use of Human Papilloma Viruses (HPV) vaccines in developed countries. More and more people are, consequentially, undergoing a screening procedure, usually combined with HPV DNA test, increasing the early diagnosis of intraepithelial HPV-related lesions. The long transit time from early cervical lesion to invasive cancer provides an opportunity to identify pre-cancerous lesions where treatment result is maximum. In fact, when an invasive CC occurs, the overall survival rate strictly depends on stage of disease with an average survival of 70% at 5 years. Under the pressure of this reality, researches have made efforts to individuate cancer markers as indicator of specific cancer events. Some markers were showed to be able to detect those intraepithelial lesions have more chance to evolve to invasive forms (p164a, p16, E-cadherin, Ki67, pRb, p53). Markers such as CEA, SCC-Ag, CD44, have been developed to detect invasive forms. Although cancer markers actually are not used only for early diagnosis, they may be useful in others fields of application such as evaluation and monitoring of treatments to improve diagnosis and treatment of CC. Insect parasitoids are often manipulated to improve biological control programs for various arthropod pests. Volatile compounds can be a relevant cue used by most parasitoid hymenoptera for host or host microhabitat location. Here, we studied olfactory responses of the braconid Asobara japonica Belokobylskij, an Asiatic endoparasitoid of the invasive pest Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura), toward its host and host substrates. Adult A. japonica displayed an innate attraction to undescribed volatile cues from infested host fruits irrespectively of the juvenile rearing experience, i.e. they respond to a novel cue subsequently used for microhabitat selection. These data suggest that A. japonica parasitoids mass-reared on artificial diet and factitious host ( D. melanogaster) can successfully locate their hosts. Naïve female parasitoids did not show a preference towards any of the tested host media. However, the enforced adult experience with the rearing host medium modified the olfactory preference patterns toward non-natal host fruits. These findings provide evidence of associative learning during the adult stage of A. japonica, and demonstrate its plasticity in exploiting the volatiles from various fruits infested by D. suzukii. Lymph node metastasis is one of the most important prognostic factors for uterine cervical cancer, although lymph node status is not part of the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) staging. Considering the increasing attention about the topic, we performed a comprehensive review of the literature, to assess the accuracy of real-time fluorescence sentinel lymph node (SLN) for the detection of nodal metastases in patients with early stage cervical cancer (ESCC). In this work, we discuss the different techniques for SLN mapping and the accuracy of each one of them and, basing on these data, summarize the most important recommendations. The South American tomato pinworm, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), is a devastating pest currently threatening the global tomato industry worldwide. In the last 10 years, it has spread and expanded to most of Europe, Africa and Asia, causing extensive damage to the crop itself and to the international tomato trade. With the aim of providing an overview of the current knowledge on this pest, we have briefly reviewed the available literature relying on its spread, quarantine, modeling and management. Finally, we have underlined the gaps in knowledge and provided several recommendations on how to achieve sustainable control as well as how to prevent further spread into unaffected areas. It has been proved that the omnivorous predator Nesidiocoris tenuis (Hemiptera: Miridae) is attracted to and can develop successfully on sesame ( Sesamum indicum). In this study, the potential of this plant, compared with Dittrichia viscosa and tomato ( Solanum lycopersicum), to attract the mirid bug was assessed. A Y-tube olfactometer was used to test the olfactory preference of the mirid in dual-choice bioassays comparing healthy tomato, S. indicum, and D. viscosa plants, and tomato plants infested by eggs and larvae of Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae). To understand the biochemical basis of the attraction of the omnivorous predator toward the alternative plants, headspace solid-phase microextraction combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was performed, with the aim of identifying potential volatiles responsible for mirid attraction. S. indicum was the most attractive plant; T. absoluta infestation did not significantly increase N. tenuis attraction. We identified 57 volatiles belonging to the classes of hydrocarbon and oxygenated monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, C-norisoprenoids, aliphatic aldehydes, esters, alcohols, and hydrocarbons. Sesame plants emitted the lowest amount of hydrocarbon monoterpenes but a higher rate of oxygenated terpenes. Green leaf volatiles, known for attracting mirids, were emitted at higher levels by sesame plants, whereas tomato plants infested by T. absoluta larvae showed the highest levels of monoterpene hydrocarbons. This prospective cohort study aimed to analyze the accuracy of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and hysteroscopic excisional biopsy (HEB) for predicting the low- and high-risk patients with endometrial carcinoma for nodal involvement at preoperative evaluation. From January 2005 to December 2006, all patients with a diagnosis of endometrial carcinoma were prospectively included in the study and underwent pelvic MRI and HEB. The pelvic MRI (without contrast) was aimed to evaluate the extent of myometrial invasion (MI < 50%, MI ≥ 50%), the possible involvement of cervical stroma, the ovarian, and lymph nodes status. HEB was performed under general anesthesia, retrieving multiple biopsies through a 5-mm, monopolar, loop electrode. According to our data analysis, the integration of MRI and HEB showed an elevated accuracy and high rates of sensitivity (85.0%), specificity (88.5%), negative predictive value (91.9%) and positive predictive value (79.0%) in identifying low-risk patients who do not need comprehensive surgical staging. Fertility-sparing surgery (FSS) in reproductive-age patients affected by endometrial cancer (EC) gained growing attention in the last decade, although the first reports were already published in 1990-2000s. Nevertheless, only few patients undergoing FSS for stage I, type I EC had been reported in each case series, without a robust multicenter study. In the available literature there are even fewer reported cases of conservative treatment of Stage IA and G2 EC. Considering these important gaps in our current knowledge, the purpose of this review was to summarize the available evidence about conservative treatments for stage IA type I and G2 EC, to improve the pretreatment counseling for reproductive-age patients. According to our overview, women who have low-risk disease (G1 or G2, endometrioid histotype confined to the endometrium) are candidates for progestin therapy. In addition, FSS could be considered a valid option for reproductive-aged patients with stage IA type I and G2 EC. Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is a polyphagous pest worldwide. Neonicotinoid insecticides, such as nitenpyram, are widely used for its control in cotton crops. Sublethal or low exposure to these insecticides can cause contrasting effects on arthropod pest populations. Through laboratory experiments, we assessed the impact of low nitenpyram concentrations on the exposed A. gossypii generation (F) and on its progeny (F). Nitenpyram caused sublethal effects on reproduction and longevity in the aphids directly exposed (F) to low doses. However, the estimated demographic indexes of the progeny (F) of those individuals exposed for 72 h were higher than those of the control population. This is the first laboratory evidence of a transgenerational hormesis owing to low lethal and sublethal nitenpyram concentrations. Although these findings must be validated in real cropping conditions, it could be expected that, in addition to the acute effects that usually occur at high (label) doses, sublethal effects and hormesis can occur on the pest populations over time among insecticide applications in the field.
