Squeezed states of electromagnetic radiation have quantum fluctuations below those of the vacuum field. They offer a unique resource for quantum information systems and precision metrology, including gravitational wave detectors, which require unprecedented sensitivity. Since the first experiments on this non-classical form of light, quantum analysis has been based on homodyning techniques and photon correlation measurements. These methods currently function in the visible to near-infrared and microwave spectral ranges. They require a well-defined carrier frequency, and photons contained in a quantum state need to be absorbed or amplified. Quantum non-demolition experiments may be performed to avoid the influence of a measurement in one quadrature, but this procedure comes at the expense of increased uncertainty in another quadrature. Here we generate mid-infrared time-locked patterns of squeezed vacuum noise. After propagation through free space, the quantum fluctuations of the electric field are studied in the time domain using electro-optic sampling with few-femtosecond laser pulses. We directly compare the local noise amplitude to that of bare (that is, unperturbed) vacuum. Our nonlinear approach operates off resonance and, unlike homodyning or photon correlation techniques, without absorption or amplification of the field that is investigated. We find subcycle intervals with noise levels that are substantially less than the amplitude of the vacuum field. As a consequence, there are enhanced fluctuations in adjacent time intervals, owing to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, which indicate generation of highly correlated quantum radiation. Together with efforts in the far infrared, this work enables the study of elementary quantum dynamics of light and matter in an energy range at the boundary between vacuum and thermal background conditions. A quantum memory, composed of a long-lived qubit coupled to each processing qubit, is important to building a scalable platform for quantum information science. These two qubits should be connected by a fast and high-fidelity operation to store and retrieve coherent quantum states. Here, we demonstrate a room-temperature quantum memory based on the spin of the nitrogen nucleus intrinsic to each nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centre in diamond. We perform coherent storage of a single NV centre electronic spin in a single nitrogen nuclear spin using Landau-Zener transitions across a hyperfine-mediated avoided level crossing. By working outside the asymptotic regime, we demonstrate coherent state transfer in as little as 120?ns with total storage fidelity of 88±6%. This work demonstrates the use of a quantum memory that is compatible with scaling as the nitrogen nucleus is deterministically present in each NV centre defect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have recently calculated shot noise for entangled and spin-polarized electrons in novel beam-splitter geometries with a local Rashba orbit–spin (s-o) interaction in the incoming leads. This interaction allows for a gate-controlled rotation of the incoming electron spins. Here we present an alternate simpler route to the shot noise calculation in the above work and focus on only electron pairs. Shot noise for these shows continuous bunching and antibunching behaviors. In addition, entangled and unentangled triplets yield distinctive shot noise oscillations. Besides allowing for a direct way to identify triplet and singlet states, these oscillations can be used to extract s-o coupling constants through noise measurements. Incoming leads with spin–orbit interband mixing give rise to an additional modulation of the current noise. This extra rotation allows the design of a spin transistor with enhanced spin control. An electronic beam splitter with a local Rashba spin–orbit coupling can serve as a detector for spin-polarized currents. The spin–orbit coupling plays the role of a tunable spin rotator and can be controlled via a gate electrode on top of the conductor. We use spin-resolved scattering theory to calculate the zero-temperature current fluctuations (shot noise) for such a four-terminal device and show that the shot noise is proportional to the spin polarization of the source. Photosystem II-herbicides (bentazone*, diuron) not only block photosynthetic electron transport, but have additional effects on the cell metabolism of Raphanus seedlings. They induce the formation of shade-type chloroplasts with a different ultrastructure and prenyllipid composition. This is shown by higher grana stacks as well as by higher chlorophyll b and lutein amounts with reference to chlorophyll a, and lower levels of the plastidic prenylquinones (plastoquinone, phylloquinone, α-tocoquinone) and β-carotene as compared to the controls. The two herbicides bentazone and diuron change the labelling pattern of the chloroplast pigments from H-mevalonic acid and 2-C-acetate and also reduce the accumulation of anthocyanin (pelargonidin), which is a further indication of a shade-type growth response. The cytoplasmic and chloroplast tRNAs of Euglena gracilis Z strain were fractionated by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and identified by aminoacylation. Purified chloroplast tRNAs, labeled in vitro with |P|, were hybridized to endonuclease restriction fragments of chloroplast DNA, allowing the corresponding tRNA genes to be localized on the physical map of Euglena chloroplast DNA. Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) hold great promise for future information processing applications utilizing a combination of electron spin and valley pseudospin. This unique spin system has led to observation of the valley Zeeman effect in neutral and charged excitonic resonances under applied magnetic fields. However, reported values of the trion valley Zeeman splitting remain highly inconsistent across studies. Here, we utilize high quality hBN encapsulated monolayer WSe2 to enable simultaneous measurement of both intervalley and intravalley trion photoluminescence. We find the valley Zeeman splitting of each trion state to be describable only by a combination of three distinct g-factors, one arising from the exciton-like valley Zeeman effect, the other two, trion specific, g-factors associated with recoil of the excess electron. This complex picture goes significantly beyond the valley Zeeman effect reported for neutral excitons, and eliminates the ambiguity surrounding the magneto-optical response of trions in tungsten based TMD monolayers. The unique valley and spin texture of atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) allows the observation of the valley Zeeman effect for neutral and charged excitons.
