The article offers information about the recent study conducted by the National Long Term Care Survey, a survey headed by mathematical demographer Kenneth Manton in the U.S. This survey aims to give information about the population of chronically disabled elderly people in the country. It stresses contradiction on the prevailing wisdom of gerontologists who believed that modern medicine would not cure or prevent chronic diseases of old age. This survey also revealed that the pace of decline on chronic disability among people over 65 has increased from 0.6% in 1982 to 2.2% in 1999 to 2004. Moreover, people behind this survey urged for a strong financial support from the government to educate people on healthier life expectancy.
