Key message: We identify three SDEs that inhibiting host defence from Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus psy62, which is an important supplement to the pathogenesis of HLB. Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas) is the main pathogen of citrus Huanglongbing (HLB). 38 new possible sec-dependent effectors (SDEs) of CLas psy62 were predicted by updated predictor SignalP 5.0, which 12 new SDEs were found using alkaline phosphate assay. Among them, SDE4310, SDE4435 and SDE4955 inhibited hypersensitivity reactions (HR) in Arabidopsis thaliana (Arabidopsis, At) and Nicotiana benthamiana leaves induced by pathogens, which lead to a decrease in cell death and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation. And the expression levels of SDE4310, SDE4435, and SDE4955 genes elevated significantly in mild symptom citrus leaves. When SDE4310, SDE4435 and SDE4955 were overexpressed in Arabidopsis, HR pathway key genes pathogenesis-related 2 (PR2), PR5, nonexpressor of pathogenesis-related 1 (NPR1) and isochorismate synthase 1 (ICS1) expression significantly decreased and the growth of pathogen was greatly increased relative to control with Pst DC3000/AvrRps4 treatment. Our findings also indicated that SDE4310, SDE4435 and SDE4955 interacted with AtCAT3 (catalase 3) and AtGAPA (glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase A). In conclusion, our results suggest that SDE4310, SDE4435 and SDE4955 are CLas psy62 effector proteins that may have redundant functions. Background: As a novel marker of inflammation, the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has been studied in various diseases. However, NLR in idiopathic membranous nephropathy (IMN) has been rarely studied. We sought to assess the role of NLR in predicting proteinuria remission in IMN. Methods: This retrospective study involved 561 patients with IMN from January 2018 to December 2022 in Department of Nephrology of Wuhan Central Hospital. All baseline data were collected before the immunosuppressive regiment was administered. The Cox proportional hazards model and Kaplan–Meier curve were applied to assess the prognostic value of NLR for proteinuria remission. Results: The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve revealed that the optimal cut-off NLR value for predicting proteinuria non-remission was 2.63, with a sensitivity and specificity of 58.2% and 72.7%, respectively. Kaplan–Meier curves showed a lower rate of proteinuria remission in patients with high NLR compared with low NLR (Log-rank = 5.04, p = 0.025). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that high NLR was an independent risk factor for proteinuria non-remission after adjustment (HR = 1.579, 95% CI 1.052–2.683, p = 0.023). Subgroup analysis indicated that high NLR was a risk factor for proteinuria non-remission especially in IMN patients with 24 h proteinuria ≥ 1 g (HR = 1.818, 95% CI 1.031–2.573, p = 0.012) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage 3–4 (HR = 1.935, 95% CI 1.084–2.495, p = 0.015). Conclusion: The current study shows that NLR is an independent risk factor for proteinuria non-remission in IMN. Few existing reports have investigated the copy number variants (CNVs) in fetuses with central nervous system (CNS) anomalies. To gain further insights into the genotype–phenotype relationship, we conducted chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) to reveal the pathogenic CNVs (pCNVs) that were associated with fetal CNS anomalies. We enrolled 5,460 pregnant women with different high-risk factors who had undergone CMA. Among them, 57 subjects with fetal CNS anomalies were recruited. Of the subjects with fetal CNS anomalies, 23 were given amniocentesis, which involved karyotype analysis and CMA to detect chromosomal abnormalities. The other 34 cases only underwent CMA detection using fetal abortive tissue. In this study, we identified five cases of chromosome aneuploid and nine cases of pCNVs in the fetuses, with a chromosomal aberration detection rate of 24.56% (14/57). In the 23 cases that were given both karyotype and CMA analysis, one case with trisomy 18 was detected by karyotyping. Moreover, CMA revealed a further three cases of pCNVs, including the 1p36.33p36.31, 7q11.23, and 1q21.1q21.2 microdeletions, with a 13.04% (3/23) increase in CMA yield over the karyotype analysis. Additionally, three cases of trisomy 13, one case of trisomy 21, and six cases of pCNVs were detected in the other 34 fetuses where only CMA was performed. Furthermore, a higher chromosomal aberration detection rate was observed in the extra CNS anomaly group than in the isolated CNS anomaly group (40.91% vs 14.29%). In conclude, several pathogenic CNVs were identified in the fetuses with CNS anomalies using CMA. Among the detected CNVs, ZIC2, GNB1, and NSUN5 may be the candidate genes that responsible for fetal CNS anomalies. Nurturing twenty-first-century competency is one important agenda in this era, especially in developing collaborative learning and critical thinking skills. Yet, facilitating such a computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) environment is challenging. Although several technological platforms from past research studies were developed to support collaborative learning, having a system that comprises a collaboration script, and graph-based workspaces to facilitate explicit externalization of cognitive processes, at the same time, armed with learning analytics to monitor the collaboration and cognitive processes is rare. In this paper, the AppleTree system is presented to illustrate three unique features. Firstly, the AppleTree system is designed with a graph-based workspace to facilitate explicit externalization of knowledge co-constructions and argumentation. Secondly, the system is embedded with a four-phased switch to structure the CSCL process. Thirdly, the system possesses real-time learning analytics, including contribution counts, social network analysis, and the learning artifacts' argumentation structure to promote the development of arguments. An exploratory case study was conducted to examine the design of the AppleTree system in an authentic classroom. Empirical findings showed that the AppleTree system helped regulate effective collaboration and supported learners in developing strong arguments. These results could address the social participation and interaction issues related to collaborative learning and enable the development of students' argumentation skills. Peer feedback is known to have positive effects on knowledge improvement in a collaborative learning environment. Attributed to technology affordances, class-wide peer feedback could be garnered at a wider range in the networked learning environment. However, more empirical studies are needed to explore further the effects of type and depth of feedback on knowledge improvement. In this mixed method research, 38 students underwent a computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) lesson in an authentic classroom environment. Both quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted on the collected data. Pre- and post-test comparison results showed that students' conceptual knowledge on adaptations improved significantly after the CSCL lesson. Qualitative analysis was conducted to examine how the knowledge improved before and after the peer feedback process. The results showed that the class-wide intergroup peer feedback supported learners, with improvement to the quality of their conceptual knowledge when cognitive capacity had reached its maximum at the group level. The peer comments that seek further clarity and suggestions prompted deeper conceptual understanding, leading to knowledge improvement. However, such types of feedback were cognitively more demanding to process. The implications of the effects of type of peer feedback on knowledge improvement and the practical implications of the findings for authentic classroom environments are discussed. Key message: We establish a fast and efficient transient silencing system that facilitates functional studies of some genes, whose knockout leads to plant lethality. In plants, the generation of loss-of-function mutants is crucial for studying gene function. Artificial microRNA (AmiRNA) technology is a more targeted and effective tool for gene silencing. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) can bind nucleic acids and deliver them into animal cells. Here, AuNPs are used in combination with AmiRNA technology in plants. We found that AmiRNA–autophagy-related proteins (ATG6) can be delivered to cells by AuNPs to achieve the effect of ATG6 silencing. It is worth noting that on the 10th day there is still a silencing effect. Similar to the atg5 lines, silencing of ATG6 significantly reduced plant resistance to Pseudomonas syringae pv.maculicola (Psm) ES4326/AvrRpt2. Interestingly, ATG6 silencing and ATG5 mutation in NPR1–GFP (nonexpressor of pathogenesis-related genes) lines significantly reduced plant resistance to Psm ES4326/AvrRpt2, suggesting that autophagy is also involved in NPR1-regulated plant immune responses. Common binary classification algorithms which learn directly from imbalanced data can lead to a bias towards the majority class. Although the over-sampling technology can solve the imbalance problem, the realness of the synthesized samples cannot be guaranteed. Generative Adversarial Networks can improve the authenticity of the generated samples. However, it may cause mode collapse, resulting in the data distribution space of the minority class changed after balance. A sample-level data generation method is proposed in this paper for imbalanced classification. Firstly, we present a reconstruction technique of latent codes with mutual information constraints for global data generation. The latent codes of the input sample are divided into latent vectors of key features and subordinate features respectively. We can obtain the mutated latent codes by retaining the key features' latent vector and randomly replacing the subordinate features' latent vector. Then the reliable similar mutation samples are generated through decoder restoration, mutual information constraint, and discriminant confrontation. In addition, the feature repulsion technique and the combination coding technique are proposed to solve the problem of feature extraction and classification for samples in overlapping areas. The former carries out supervised feature representation learning of the key features' latent vector. The latter superimposes the reconstruction error of each dimension of the sample as a supplement for the latent vector of key features. Combined with a variety of typical base classifiers, a large number of experimental results on public datasets show that the proposed method outperforms other typical data balancing methods in F1-Measure and G-Mean. The brain has many connections with various organs. Recent advances have demonstrated the existence of a bidirectional central nervous system (CNS) and intestinal tract, that is, the brain-gut axis. Although studies have suggested that the brain and lung can communicate with each other through many pathways, whether there is a brain–lung axis remains still unknown. Based on previous findings, we put forward a hypothesis: there is a cross-talk between the central nervous system and the lung via neuroanatomical pathway, endocrine pathway, immune pathway, metabolites and microorganism pathway, gas pathway, that is, the brain–lung axis. Beyond the regulation of the physiological state in the body, bi-directional communication between the lung and the brain is associated with a variety of disease states, including lung diseases and CNS diseases. Exploring the brain–lung axis not only helps us to understand the development of the disease from different aspects, but also provides an important target for treatment strategies. Background and Aims: Soil net nitrogen mineralization (Nmin) rate and its temperature sensitivity (Q10) are critical parameters for predicting nitrogen availability under global warming. However, the controlling factors of the net Nmin rate and its Q10 at the regional scale remain highly uncertain, especially in different ecosystem types. Methods: An incubation experiment at three different temperatures was conducted to measure the net Nmin rate and to calculate its Q10. High-throughput sequencing was applied to explore the microbial community diversity and composition. Results: Results showed that the overall net Nmin rate was highest in paddy fields, followed by forest and dryland fields, whereas its Q10 was not different among ecosystems. Structural equation models revealed that the net Nmin rate was mainly affected by soil properties in dryland habitats, whereas it was mainly influenced by soil microbial communities and mean annual temperature (MAT) in paddy habitats. In forest habitats, the net Nmin rate was mainly affected by bacterial communities rather than fungal communities. The Q10 of net Nmin was close to 2.0, indicating that the net Nmin rate is sensitive to climatic warming. The Q10 was impacted by the bacterial community composition in dryland soils, whereas it was influenced by soil properties and bacterial diversity in paddy and forest soils. Conclusion: This study provides a novel quantification on the contribution of soil microbial diversity and community composition to soil net Nmin process in three ecosystem types, with implications for microbial-mediated N mineralization process under climatic change scenarios. Flow around a circular cylinder is ubiquitous in nature and industrial applications. In marine, coastal and bridge engineering, undesirable vortex-induced vibrations (VIVs) of structural components are common, and the periodic vortex shedding (von K a ´ rmen vortex streets) of the cylinder plays a crucial role in the VIVs. Therefore, it makes sense to consider approaches to suppress vortex shedding and improve the surrounding flow of the cylinder. Two categories of flow control methods, i.e., passive and active strategies, effectively handled this problem. Compared to active control, the passive control method does not require additional energy input to maintain the process and is easier and more cost-effective to implement, making it worth investigating. This selective literature review gives academic frontiers on passive control of flow past a circular cylinder, including splitter plate, groove, screen, rough surfaces, spirals and helical plates, slit passive jets, control rods, porous media coating and vortex generators. Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients have high levels of inflammatory mediators. These inflammatory mediators contribute to the increased risk of cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality. Platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) has recently been recognized as a novel inflammatory marker and has been shown to be associated with the prognosis in CKD patients. However, the quality of these studies varies and their results are controversial. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to investigate the relationship between PLR and all-cause mortality in CKD patients. Methods: A systematic literature search of PubMed, EMBASE, CENTRAL and ISI Web of Science was conducted. The databases were searched from their inception dates up to the latest issue (31 October 2021). Two reviewers independently searched the databases and screened studies. Data were extracted using a standardized collection form. Meta-analysis was performed to compare PLR values between CKD and non-CKD patients, and to investigate the association between PLR and all-cause mortality in CKD patients. This meta-analysis is reported in adherence to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). Results: A total of 11 studies involving 4244 participants were selected. The pooled data indicated that PLR values were significantly higher in CKD patients than non-CKD controls (weighted mean difference = 21.6, 95% CI 17.39–25.81, p < 0.01), and PLR is associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality in CKD patients (hazard ratio = 2.49, 95% CI 1.78–3.49, p < 0.01). Conclusions: Patients with CKD have higher PLR values compared to non-CKD patients. Meanwhile, PLR values were highly associated with all-cause mortality in CKD patients. Background: Irisin is not only a myokine but also an adipokine that is critical in many diseases including in the development of such diseases as obesity, diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome, coronary artery disease, and chronic inflammation. However, the association between irisin and chronic kidney disease (CKD) is unclear. This systematic review aimed to assess circulating irisin levels in patients with CKD and compare them with those in non-CKD patients. Methods: PubMed, EMBASE, CENTRAL, ISI Web of Science, and CNKI were searched to identify observational studies of circulating irisin levels in patients with CKD. Two reviewers independently searched the databases and screened studies according to the inclusion criteria. Data were extracted using a standardized collection form. Meta-analysis was performed to compare the differences in circulating irisin levels between CKD and non-CKD patients. Results: A total of 9 studies (6 cross-sectional and 3 case controls) involving 859 CKD patients and 393 non-CKD individuals were selected. The pooled data indicated that circulating irisin concentrations were significantly lower in CKD nondialysis patients (WMD = − 84.79, 95% CI − 170.23, 0.50; p < 0.05), peritoneal dialysis patients (WMD = − 235.81, 95% CI − 421.99, − 49.62; p = 0.01), and hemodialysis patients (WMD = − 217.46, 95% CI − 381.35, − 53.57; p = 0.009) than in healthy controls. Conclusions: This study confirmed that irisin levels were decreased in patients with CKD. Moreover, circulating irisin levels were lower in dialysis patients than in nondialysis patients. Purpose: Given the vast microorganisms and infertile resources in the soil, nutritional resources would be a focal point of bacterial competition. Microbes could quickly capture the nutrition to outcompete their competitors or efficiently cross-feed to cooperate with other bacterial species. However, how interspecies trophic patterns shape the bacterial interactions in the co-occurrence network remains unclear. This study investigates the role of trophic patterns, containing niche overlap and nestedness, on the bacterial relationships in the co-occurrence network structure. Materials and methods: We assessed the correlation between bacterial interactions and trophic patterns according to high-throughput techniques and culturomics. A co-occurrence network was constructed to obtain the relationship of OTUs. The substrate consumption patterns of culturable bacteria were used to calculate the interspecies trophic patterns. Results and discussion: The co-occurrence network was constructed by the thirty-three culturable bacteria that matched 33 OTUs with 112 links in total. The negative correlation pairs possessed a higher niche overlap than the positive correlations pairs. However, negative and positive correlation pairs displayed no significant differences in the niche nestedness. Interestingly, we found substrate types could also influence microbial interactions. Elucidating the association between the trophic patterns and interspecies interaction is crucial for comprehending the resource's role and contribution to the microbial community. Conclusion: Together, these findings indicate that interspecies trophic patterns, such as niche overlap, could be a predictor to understand the bacterial relationships in the co-occurrence network. The toxicity of methyl viologen (MV) to organisms is mainly due to the oxidative stress caused by reactive oxygen species produced from cell response. This study mainly investigated the response of Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 to MV by combining transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses. Through transcriptome sequencing, we found many genes responding to MV stress, and analyzed them by weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA). Meanwhile, many metabolites were also found by metabolomic analysis to be regulated post MV treatment. Based on the analysis results of Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) of the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the transcriptome and the differential metabolites in the metabolome, the dynamic changes of genes and metabolites involved in ten metabolic pathways in response to MV were analyzed. The results indicated that although the oxidative stress caused by MV was the strongest at 6 h, the proportion of the upregulated genes and metabolites involved in these ten metabolic pathways was the highest. Photosynthesis positively regulated the response to MV-induced oxidative stress, and the regulation of environmental information processing was inhibited by MV. Other metabolic pathways played different roles at different times and interacted with each other to respond to MV. This study comprehensively analyzed the response of Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 to oxidative stress caused by MV from a multi-omics perspective, with providing key data and important information for in-depth analysis of the response of organisms to MV, especially photosynthetic organisms. In consideration of comparable ionic radius between indium ions and tin ions, indium-doped SnS2 (In/SnS2) sample was designed and synthesized by one-pot solvothermal method. Its multi-level structure composed of 10-nm-thick ultrathin sheets can enhance utilization efficiency of solar light. The substitution of trivalent indium ions for tetravalent tin ions causes indium to form a negative charge center and simultaneously produces sulfur vacancies positively charged. As expected, the production of hydrogen on doped sample is up to 470 µmol g−1, which is about twice as high as that on SnS2. This is attributed to hierarchical structure composed of ultrathin sheets and effective attraction of hydrogen ions by negative charge on trivalent indium ions. The results suggest that doping the ions whose ionic radius is close to the radius of the anions or cations in the material into the lattice sites may provide a new tactic for the design of semiconductor photocatalytic materials. Iron is a common cofactor in biological processes such as respiration, photosynthesis, and nitrogen fixation. The genes isiC and isiD encode unknown proteins, and the growth of ΔisiC and ΔisiD mutants is inhibited under iron-deficient conditions. To study the regulatory mechanisms of IsiC and IsiD during iron starvation, we carried out transcriptome and metabolome sequencing. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis showed that the photosynthesis, nitrogen metabolism, and ABC transporter pathways play a vital role in regulating iron deficiency. Upon iron repletion, IsiC and IsiD also have a regulatory effect on these pathways. Additionally, KEGG analysis of the differential metabolites of wild type (WT) and mutants showed that they were all enriched in starch and sucrose metabolism after iron limitation. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) constructed a co-expression network of differentially expressed genes with phenotypes and metabolites, and finally identified five modules. The turquoise module was positively correlated with iron deficiency. In contrast, the WT and blue module exhibited a negative correlation, and the mutants ΔisiC and ΔisiD were positively correlated with the gray and brown modules, respectively. WGCNA also analyzed the relationship between metabolites and phenotypes, and the green module was related to iron starvation. The co-expression network determined the hub genes and metabolites of each module. This study lays a foundation for a better understanding of cyanobacteria in response to iron deficiency. The present study is a revisit to Ludwig Prandtl's elimination of von Kármán vortex street behind a circular cylinder by using steady suction in the boundary layer. We show in particular the full-time vortex evolutions and vortex dynamics in the wake. The wind tunnel investigations are conducted at the Reynolds number (Re) of 2.0 × 104. Slot suction is implemented symmetrically on both lower and upper boundary layers of the cylindrical test model to modify the flow separation process and to eliminate the downstream vortex street. The boundary layer suction is described by the dimensionless momentum parameter of suction relative to the free-stream airflow. A high-speed particle image velocimetry system is employed in the present study to visualize the flow patterns and capture the wake dynamics of the natural and modified cylinders controlled with boundary-layer suction. Pollution with the heavy metal cadmium (Cd2+) is a global problem. Cadmium adversely affects living organisms, highlighting the need to develop new methods for removal of this pollutant from the environment. In this study, we used a novel biomaterial based on calcium-crosslinked alginate-encapsulated bacteria to precipitate Cd2+ in polluted water. Our results show that calcium-crosslinked alginate-encapsulated bacteria effectively removed Cd2+ ions from cadmium-polluted water. Approximately 100% of Cd2+ ions were removed by 10 g (wet weight) of this biomaterial when the loading concentration of Cd2+ reached 1 mM in a volume of 50 ml water. During this process, a CdS nanoparticle, showing good crystallinity in the quantum range, was simultaneously produced. To validate the activity and stability of this biomaterial, we measured cysteine desulfhydrase activity in the stored biomaterial and whether this biomaterial could be recycled. The encapsulated bacteria maintained catalytic activity for at least 2 weeks. The capsules were easily regenerated and possessed good recyclability. Our results indicated that calcium-crosslinked alginate-encapsulated bacteria are suitable for depletion of Cd2+ in polluted water and for production of CdS nanoparticles. These calcium-crosslinked alginate-encapsulated bacteria are safe for biological manipulation and can be widely used to produce CdS nanoparticles during bioremediation of Cd2+-polluted water. While there are many studies on students' collaborative learning at the small group level, pedagogies and strategies for supporting students' collaborative learning at the class level are underexplored. This study proposes a pedagogical model named the Spiral Model of Collaborative Knowledge Improvement (SMCKI) to inform the design and implementation of multi-layered collaborative learning activities in a networked class where there are many groups of students working collaboratively. Starting with a phase of individual ideation, the pedagogical model scaffolds students to go through five phases of intra-group and inter-group knowledge improvement and refinement, with the goal of supporting the advancement of their individual and collective knowledge. An exploratory case study is presented to illustrate how this model was used in a pre-service teachers' technology-enhanced learning (TEL) activity design lesson in a Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) environment. The results show that the participants significantly improved the quality of TEL design throughout the five phases of SMCKI. Purpose: Since the end of 2019, dialysis patients have been at risk of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as well as other potential complications. Hence, we sought to describe the clinical characteristics of dialysis patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Methods: We reviewed clinical outcomes, which consisted of clinical data extracted from the medical records of 695 registered dialysis patients at the Dialysis Center of Central Hospital of Wuhan from January 13th, 2020, to February 29th, 2020, and performed statistical analysis. According to the results, there were 447, 227 and 21 hemodialysis (HD), peritoneal dialysis (PD) and combined HD and PD (HD&PD) cases, respectively. Results: During the outbreak of COVID-19, 36 dialysis patients were infected by SARS-CoV-2. Among those 36 patients, 32 (7.2%) were on HD, and 4 (1.8%) were on PD. When comparing SARS-CoV-2 infection between HD and PD, the relative risk was 4.07 (RR = 4.07, 95% CI 1.46–11.35). We noted a median age of 66 years during the observation period, and the number of male patients was 23 (63.9%). There were 15 fatal cases tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 (13 cases on HD and 2 cases on PD). By comparing mortality in the same period of 2018, 2019 and 2020, the all-cause mortality of hemodialysis patients was significantly higher in 2020 (4.89%) than in either 2018 (2.55%) or 2019 (1.97%). There was no significant difference in mortality from all causes excluding COVID-19, during the same period among the 3-year period. However, during the COVID-19 outbreak, the mortality from all causes excluding COVID-19 was 2.73%, which was slightly higher than that from COVID-19 (2.16%). Purpose: Unraveling the drivers of the nitrogen cycling functional guilds variation in response to fertilizer management is a major goal in agroecosystem study. Nitrospira-like nitrite oxidizing bacteria can oxidize nitrite to nitrate, which play a critical role in the biogeochemical nitrogen cycle. However, how the Nitrospira community structure and co-occurrence patterns in a long-term inorganic and organic fertilization regimes within different soil aggregates have been largely unexplored. Materials and methods: The soil samples were collected from a long-term (39-year) inorganic and organic fertilized agricultural ecosystem, including no-fertilizer (CK); mineral-fertilizer (NPK); manure-fertilizer (M); nitrogen-fertilizer (N); and M + N (MN). Three sizes of soil aggregate were manually fractionated by soil wet sieving technique with a series of meshes: (i) 2000–250 μm (macroaggregates), (ii) 250–53 μm (microaggregates), and (iii) < 53 μm fractions (silt and clay). We performed qPCR and high-throughput-sequencing to assess the Nitrospira abundance and community structure, respectively. Results and discussion: Organic fertilization (M and MN) efficiently increased soil potential nitrite oxidation activity (PNO), which was higher in the < 53 μm than 250–53 μm and followed the 2000–250 μm fraction, than other treatments. All the fertilizer treatments resulted in a similar pattern, where the 250–53-μm fraction had significantly greater Nitrospira abundance than the 2000–250 μm and < 53 μm fractions. The alpha diversity of Nitrosipra did not change in response to the fertilization treatments and soil aggregate sizes. Nitrospira community shifted in fertilization types, while not in aggregate sizes. Nitrospira community composition and abundance significantly correlated with PNO. Network analysis suggested that organic fertilizations (M and MN) promote the complexity of Nitrospira networks and possess higher connectivity than inorganic fertilization networks. Conclusions: Our data suggested that fertilization strongly affected the Nitrospira community structure and co-occurrence patterns, which may implicate the importance of Nitrospira function in the nitrite oxidation process in soils with organic fertilization. Acute kidney injury is a complex clinical disease that is associated with a high incidence of morbidity and mortality. Drug-induced acute kidney injury occurs in approximately 19–33% of hospitalized patients. Cisplatin, one of the most commonly used and effective chemotherapeutic drugs not only exerts anti-tumor effects but also causes renal toxicity damage, affecting its clinical application. Vinpocetine is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant drug that predominately acts in the nervous system. In this study, we investigated the effects and mechanisms of vinpocetine in an animal model of cisplatin-induced acute renal injury. Rats were randomly divided into three experimental groups. During a 10-day trial, rats in the control group were administered a physiological saline solution; rats in the model group received a 5 mg/kg intraperitoneal injection of cisplatin; and rats in the cisplatin + vinpocetine group received a 5 mg/kg intraperitoneal injection of cisplatin as well as a 5 mg/kg dose of vinpocetine via gavage. We observed that following cisplatin administration, the rats exhibited an increase in blood urea and creatinine levels as well as an increase in their inflammation and oxidative stress levels. In renal tissue, cisplatin caused the morphological changes typical of acute tubular injury. Vinpocetine reduced the cisplatin-induced acute renal function damage and tubular injury. In both in vivo and in vitro experiments, we found that vinpocetine can confer protection of rat renal cells by inhibiting the NF–κB signaling pathway and activating the Nrf2/ARE signaling pathway. Background: The palpebral marginal incision technique is a novel method for double-eyelid surgery. However, studies comparing palpebral marginal and traditional incisions are scarce. We aimed to compare the two techniques with respect to post-operative patient satisfaction and complications. Methods: This retrospective analysis included 422 patients who underwent double-eyelid surgery with either the palpebral marginal incision or traditional incision at the Medical Cosmetology Department of Tianjin Eye Hospital from February 2015 to September 2018. Patients were divided into the palpebral marginal (n = 280, 66.4%) and traditional incision (n = 142, 33.6%) groups. Patient satisfaction at 3 and 6 months post-operatively and incidence of complications were compared between the groups. The average post-operative follow-up duration was 6.75 months. Results: The palpebral marginal incision group was younger than the traditional incision. There were no significant differences in sexes between the groups. Compared with the traditional incision group, the palpebral marginal incision group had greater patient satisfaction at 3 months post-operatively. Patient satisfaction at 6 months post-operatively and total incidence of complications were similar between the groups. Incidence of hypertrophic scar formation was lower in the palpebral marginal incision group. Other complications showed no significant between-group differences. Conclusions: The palpebral marginal incision technique has similar surgical outcomes to the traditional incision technique. Our findings confirm that the advantages of the palpebral marginal incision technique include almost indiscernible surgical scarring and faster post-operative recovery, which may result in increasing popularity among young people. Purpose: Arbuscular mycorrhizal-like fungi (AM-like fungi) are crucial for ecosystem functioning and soil organic matter (SOM) is an indicator of soil quality. However, the spatial distribution of arbuscular mycorrhizal-like fungi, glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP) and SOM in a large scale is still unclear. The objectives of this study were to investigate the spatial distribution of SOM, arbuscular mycorrhizal-like fungi and GRSP, and reveal the potential relationship among them in a large scale across China. Materials and methods: Soil samples (different in vegetation type, climate, and soil variables) were collected from 26 sites in a large scale across China. The soil properties including pH, total carbon (TC), total nitrogen (TN), and SOM were determined. Quantitative PCR amplification of the 18S rRNA gene was conducted to evaluate the abundance of arbuscular mycorrhizal-like fungi. The contents of easily extractable GRSP (EE-GRSP), difficultly extractable GRSP (DE-GRSP), and total GRSP (T-GRSP) were measured. Results and discussion: Arbuscular mycorrhizal-like fungi abundance was significantly affected by the vegetation type and dramatically correlated with the soil TN and mean annual precipitation (MAP). EE-GRSP and DE-GRSP were more associated with the TC and TN content, respectively. The abundance of arbuscular mycorrhizal-like fungi significantly but weakly correlated with the T-GRSP and EE-GRSP. The SOM content positively correlated with the DE-GRSP and T-GRSP. Those results suggested that the arbuscular mycorrhizal-like fungi are a larger contributor to regulating the content of GRSP, which is an important indicator of the soil organic carbon pool. Conclusions: Our results indicated that arbuscular mycorrhizal-like fungi abundance has a greater contribution to driving the distribution of soil C and N in a large scale by affecting the content of glomalin-related soil protein. "Heuristic approach" is a teachers' professional development (TPD) method supported by principled practical knowledge (PPK) which focuses on principled practical guidance that develops teachers' capacity in innovative learning designs. This study reports the key features of the design and implementation of a TPD programme aimed at facilitating teachers' experiential learning in designing and implementing seamless inquiry science learning (SISL). The TPD is based on the notion of fast and frugal heuristics which are supported by PPK and lead to actual classroom action. Two teacher case studies were analysed to investigate the teachers' learning trajectory underpinned by an experiential learning framework throughout the TPD programme. As learners of innovative pedagogy, the teachers explored the design and implementation of SISL with their students. The findings indicate that the TPD programme had a positive impact on three aspects of teachers' experiential learning: (a) acquiring new pedagogy; (b) improving knowledge and skills in the seamless inquiry science lesson (SISL) design and implementation; (c) nurturing reflective practices in teachers concerning the designing and implementation of SISL lessons. The teachers' professional reflection and growth through experiential learning processes demonstrate how heuristic-based TPD engaged them as creative and professional lesson designers, resulting in meaningful changes in classroom practices. Our data analysis concluded that the heuristic-based TPD should be designed in such a way that it is authentic, reflective, practice-based and focused on meaningful tasks for the teachers. Oxidative stress is an unavoidable consequence of interactions with various reactive oxygen species (ROS)-inducing agents that would damage cells or even cause cell death. Bacteria have developed defensive systems, including induction of stress-sensing proteins and detoxification enzymes, to handle oxidative stress. Cyclic diguanylate (c-di-GMP) is a ubiquitous intracellular bacterial second messenger that coordinates diverse aspects of bacterial growth and behavior. In this study, we revealed a mechanism by which c-di-GMP regulated bacterial oxidative stress resistance in Pseudomonas putida KT2440. High c-di-GMP level was found to enhance bacterial resistance towards hydrogen peroxide. Transcription assay showed that expression of two oxidative stress resistance genes, fpr-1 and katE, was promoted under high c-di-GMP level. Deletion of fpr-1 and katE both decreased bacterial tolerance to hydrogen peroxide and weakened the effect of c-di-GMP on oxidative stress resistance. The promoted expression of fpr-1 under high c-di-GMP level was caused by increased cellular ROS via a transcriptional regulator FinR. We further demonstrated that the influence of high c-di-GMP on cellular ROS depend on the existence of FleQ, a transcriptional regulatory c-di-GMP effector. Besides, the regulation of katE by c-di-GMP was also FleQ dependent in an indirect way. Our results proved a connection between c-di-GMP and oxidative stress resistance and revealed a mechanism by which c-di-GMP regulated expression of fpr-1 and katE in P. putida KT2440. In situ immobilization of cadmium (Cd) has been considered as a cost-effective and non-disruptive remediation technique for Cd-contaminated soils. In this study, several immobilization approaches were compared in a Cd-contaminated agricultural farmland. The soil was treated with different combinations of the immobilizing agents such as biochar (C), rice straw (RS), lime (L), and engineered bacteria P. putida X4/pIME (B). The plant yield and Cd uptake of lettuce as well as soil Cd fractionations were measured. The Cd content in lettuce leaves and roots decreased by 46.8~67.2% and 36.8~60.2%, respectively. Among the five treatments, combined rice straw, lime, and engineered bacteria treatment showed the lowest Cd concentration in lettuce leaves (0.14 mg/kg) and the highest plant yield (21.5 t/ha). The alleviating effects are assigned to the significant transformation of water soluble and exchangeable Cd to humic substance bound, strong organic bound and residual Cd in the soils. This study suggests that this bio-organic stabilizing agent is more cost-effective than some other immobilization agents reported previously, and shows a great application prospect in improving agriculture production of heavy metal-polluted agricultural soils. Background: Blepharoptosis can not only affect facial appearance but physical and mental health as well. Traditional treatments require long recovery time and leave unpleasant scars. In this study, we explored a simple and effective way to correct mild, moderate blepharoptosis and analyzed the causes and precautions for postoperative complications. Methods: From March 2014 to May 2017, patients presenting with mild or moderate bilateral or unilateral blepharoptosis underwent minimally invasive blepharoptosis correction using suspension of the conjoint fascial sheath of the levator and superior rectus. Mild blepharoptosis was corrected by 1 or 2 of loops suspension sutures, whereas moderate blepharoptosis was corrected by 3 or 5 loops. The postoperative evaluation, including the degree of correction or residual ptosis, asymmetry and presence of lagophthalmos, was performed after a minimum follow-up period of 9 months. Results: Forty patients (55 eyelids) were included. The mean followed up period was 13.40 ± 4.60 months. Good results were seen in 48 ptosis eyes (87.27%). Double eyelid crease was formed simultaneously without an obvious wound. Two mild ptosis eyelids received a fair result, and 4 moderate ptosis eyelids improved to "mild ptosis." The mean marginal reflex distance 1 significantly increased postoperatively. Conclusion: Long-term follow-up indicates that minimally invasive conjoint fascial sheath suspension works well for mild and moderate ptosis. With its short recovery time, simultaneous double eyelid crease formation and long-lasting effect, the surgery is worth popularizing. This current article is drawn from a qualitative study investigating the motivations and uses of digital devices of Singapore parents with their toddlers and preschoolers (age range: 1–5-year-old children). The article focuses on three prominent empirical findings. First, parent participants tend to try using a digital device with children to gratify needs for children's learning, tension release, and bonding. Second, these parents' perceptions of the extent to which these needs are gratified and the risks when using digital devices influence their decision to use. Third, these interviewed parents observed that the appropriate use of digital devices, with their rich educational content, flexibility, and interactivity, were instrumental in providing further opportunities for learning and discovering the world of children. The article seeks to contribute to the international literature of early childhood learning by providing evidence on factors influencing parents' use of digital devices with their children and possible impacts of that use on children development. Heavy metal pollution in agricultural soils has become a widespread serious problem with the rapid industrialization and urbanization in the past two decades. Cadmium (Cd2+) is of the most concern in soils due to its high toxicity. It is necessary to develop remediation strategies to remove or neutralize its toxic effects in Cd-contaminated soil. Microbial bioremediation is a promising technology to treat heavy metal-contaminated soils. In this study, Cd-resistant bacterium, isolated from heavy metal-polluted soil in Southern China, was characterized as Raoultella sp. strain X13 on the basis of its biochemical profile and 16S rRNA. We investigated the characterization of Cd2+ distribution in different cellular compartments after Cd2+ uptake. Cd2+ uptake by strain X13 was mainly by ion exchange and chelation binding tightly to the cell wall. In addition, X13 plant growth-promoting characteristics suggested that X13 could solubilize phosphate and produce indole acetic acid. Pot experiments for the remediation of Cd-contaminated soil in situ by X13 inoculation demonstrated that X13 application to Cd-contaminated soils significantly promoted pak choi growth and improved production. We also found that X13 substantially reduced the Cd2+ bioavailability for pak choi. Therefore, strain X13 is an effective treatment for potential application in Cd2+ remediation as well as for sustainable agronomic production programs in Cd-contaminated soils. The bioavailability and potential uptake of heavy metals by crops is fundamentally influenced by the forms of metals in soils. Organic matter plays an important role in controlling the transformation of heavy metal fractionations in soils. However, long-term effects of organic matter on heavy metal speciation remains highly uncertain. In this study, rice straw was introduced to a subtropical Pb-contaminated soil for 2-year period so as to clarify the redistribution of Pb fractions and their correlations with soil properties. By combining sequential extraction and X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, we find that lead is predominantly presented in Fe oxide-bound, surface adsorbed, and residual fractions in the soil. The incorporation of rice straw can effectively reduce the labile species of Pb by promoting the binding of Pb to iron oxides. Furthermore, aging leads to the transfer of considerable amounts of Pb to the association with Fe oxides and this transformation is enhanced by the presence of organic matter. Organic matter input and soil aging tend to shift Pb to amorphous Fe oxides than crystalline Fe oxides. The correlation analysis shows that Fe oxide fractions play vital roles in controlling the forms of Pb in soil. This study presents the first result regarding the long-term effect of organic matter on the redistribution of Pb in naturally polluted soil, which is useful for understanding the fate of Pb and developing remediation strategies for Pb-polluted soils. Background: Aspects of sexual health, which can be adversely affected by chronic disease, have been inadequately explored in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).Aims: We evaluated patient-reported interest in sexual activity and satisfaction with sex life in a large cohort of IBD patients.Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study within the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation Partners Internet cohort. Sequential participants completed a 6-question supplemental online survey to examine sexual interest and satisfaction using the Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement Information System® (PROMIS®) Sexual Function and Satisfaction measures. One-sample t tests were used to compare interest and satisfaction scores to general population norms.Results: Among 2569 individuals, 1639 had Crohn's disease (CD), 930 had ulcerative colitis (UC) or indeterminate colitis, and 71% were women. Mean PROMIS scores for sexual interest were comparable to the general US population in men (CD: 49 and UC: 50 vs. population mean 50) and women (CD: 41 and UC: 40 vs. population mean 42). However, sexual satisfaction scores were lower than the US population in men (CD: 48 and UC: 48 vs. 51) and women (CD: 47 and UC: 46 vs. 49), p < 0.01 for both. Older age, disease activity, depression, anxiety, and pain were associated with lower interest and satisfaction and lowered IBD-specific quality of life.Conclusions: IBD patients in a large online survey had similar levels of sexual interest but decreased sexual satisfaction compared to the general population. Copper contamination of soils is a global environmental problem. Soil components (organic matter, clay minerals, and microorganisms) and retention time can govern the adsorption, fixation, and distribution of copper. This study evaluated the interaction effects of soil components and aging on the distribution of exogenous copper. Three typical Chinese soils (Ultisol, Alfisol, and Histosol) were collected from Hunan, Henan, and Heilongjiang Provinces. Soils were incubated with rice straw (RS) and engineered bacteria (Pseudomonas putida X4/pIME) in the presence of exogenous copper for 12 months. Sequential extraction was employed to obtain the distribution of Cu species in soils, and the mobility factors of Cu were calculated. The relationships between soil properties and Cu fractions were analyzed with stepwise multiple linear regression. The results show that organic carbon plays a more important role in shaping the distribution of relatively mobile Cu, and iron oxides can be more critical in stabilizing Cu species in soils. Our results suggest that organic matter is the most important factor influencing copper partitioning in Ultisols, while iron oxides are more significant in Alfisols. The mobility of exogenous Cu in soils depends largely on organic carbon, amorphous Fe, and aging. The introduction of both rice straw and rice straw + engineered bacteria enhanced the stabilization of Cu in all the three soils during aging process. The introduction of bacteria could reduce copper mobility, which was indicated by the lowest mobility factors of Cu for the treatment with bacteria in Black, Red, and Cinnamon soils at the first 4, 8, and 8 months, respectively. Different measures should be taken into account regarding the content of organic matter and iron oxides depending on soil types for the risk assessment and remediation of Cu-contaminated soils. The main goal of this research is to understand how young children use mobile technology such as smartphones to traverse different learning contexts and harness a constellation of resources to make sense of their science learning in daily lives. We adopted Rogoff's sociocultural lens of transformation of participation that helps us understand how students' science learning experiences can interact with their wide array of cognitive, social and cultural resources and be mediated through personal, interpersonal and cultural-institutional forces in formal and informal learning spaces. We present an analysis of three contrasting case illustrations of Primary 3 (aged 9-10) students in a Singapore ICT-enriched primary school, and discuss findings in relation to the virtuous and vicious cycles of learning trajectories. In conclusion, we contend that mobile technology, which is considered as a cultural tool and learning hub, has the potential to elevate learning, but this potential can only be realized under two conditions: (a) when learners have created the habit of mind for utilizing and harnessing cultural, epistemic and social resources to foster connections between formal and informal knowledge; and (b) when the use of mobile technology is situated within the broader knowledge bases that our current formal curriculum recognizes. Objective: To investigate the effects of ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide (USPIO) labeling on the maturity or immune tolerance of immature dendritic cells (imDCs) as the success of immunotherapy with immature dendritic cells is highly dependent on immune tolerance. Results: The feasibility of tracking implanted USPIO-labeled imDCs in vivo by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was explored. The effects of USPIO labeling on the immune tolerance of imDCs was examined. USPIO when higher than 200 μg/ml caused considerable damage to imDCs, induced imDC maturation, and impacted the immune tolerance of imDCs. USPIO labeling caused a dose-dependent increase in autophagosome formation in imDCs, and autophagy inhibitors prevented the maturation of imDCs while stimulating their immune tolerance. Conclusions: We speculate that high concentrations of USPIO can be used to induce imDC maturation, and that this process is likely mediated through an autophagy-related pathway. The absorber layers for chalcopyrite solar cells were fabricated by selenization of the stacked metal layers (SML). Co-sputtering and sequential sputtering methods were utilized to prepare the SML, and the variation of the stacking sequences and the effect of each stacked layer thickness were investigated. The stacking sequence of In/CuGa⋯In/CuGa was found having advantages in the SML growth and the average size of indium hillocks might be tailored by changing the thickness of each stacked layer. The SML in the stacking mode of In/CuGa⋯In/CuGa prepared while the thickness for each indium layer fixed at approximately 83 nm exhibited the desired morphology with evenly distributed indium hillocks in small diameters. The selenized ${\rm{CuI}}{{\rm{n}}_x}{\rm{G}}{{\rm{a}}_{1 - x}}{\rm{S}}{{\rm{e}}_2}$ (CIGS) layer showed a smooth surface and largest grain size with phase segregation being suppressed effectively. A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of chicken manure compost on the fractionation of cadmium (Cd), soil biological properties and Cd uptake by wheat in a soil affected by mining activities in Hubei province, China. Compost was applied at five levels (0, 27, 54, 108, 216 t ha), and winter wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) was chosen as an indicator plant. Results showed that the application of compost increased soil pH and the content of total phosphorus and organic matter. Soil biological properties such as microbial biomass carbon, invertase, protease, urease and catalase activities were significantly enhanced by 0.24-3.47 times after compost application. Sequential extraction indicated that compost amendments decreased the acid-extractable Cd by 8.2-37.6 %, while increased the reducible and oxidisable Cd by 9.2-39.5 and 8.2-60.4 %, respectively. The addition of 27-54 t ha compost reduced Cd content in wheat stems and seeds by 69.6-75.0 % and 10.3-18.4 %, respectively. However, only 25.5-26.5 % reductions in Cd content in wheat stems were observed in 108-216 t ha compost amendments, and no significant decrease was detected for seeds. This study suggests that although compost is a suitable organic amendment to improve soil fertility and biological activities, the addition of compost should be moderated by an appropriate rate to optimize the use of compost for the reclamation of metal-contaminated soils at field scale. Autophagy is a conserved intracellular process through which cytoplasmic components are degraded and recycled under stress conditions. In the innate immunity of higher plants, autophagy has either pro-survival or pro-death functions in pathogen-induced programmed cell death (PCD). In aged leaves, autophagy negatively regulates PCD by eliminating redundant salicylic acid. However, in young leaves, the specific pro-death mechanisms of autophagy and signaling pathways related to the autophagic process have not been elucidated. Here, we demonstrate that enhanced disease susceptibility 1 (EDS1) mediated the activation of autophagy and played a key role in the pro-death mechanism of autophagy during avirulent Pst DC3000 ( AvrRps4) infection. The path through which autophagosomes enter the vacuole was blocked. Additionally, formation of the ATG12-ATG5 complex and the level of enzymatic activity associated with ATG8 cleavage decreased in eds1 mutants. The expression of EDS1 in atg5 mutants was also much lower than that in wild-type plants during pathogen-triggered PCD. These findings implied that EDS1 may regulate autophagy by affecting the activities of the two ubiquitin-like protein-conjugating pathways. Moreover, autophagy may regulate immunity-related PCD by affecting the expression of EDS1 in young plants. Spiking neural P systems (SN P systems, for short) are a class of distributed parallel computing devices inspired from the way neurons communicate by means of spikes. In this work, we consider SN P systems with the following restriction: at each step the active neuron with the maximum (or minimum) number of spikes among the neurons that can spike will fire [if there is a tie for the maximum (or minimum) number of spikes stored in the active neurons, only one of the neurons containing the maximum (or minimum) is chosen non-deterministically]. We investigate the computational power of such sequential SN P systems that are used as language generators. We prove that recursively enumerable languages can be characterized as projections of inverse-morphic images of languages generated by such sequential SN P systems. A multifunctional Pseudomonas putida X3 strain was successfully engineered by introducing methyl parathion (MP)-degrading gene and enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) gene in P. putida X4 (CCTCC: 209319). In liquid cultures, the engineered X3 strain utilized MP as sole carbon source for growth and degraded 100 mg L of MP within 24 h; however, this strain did not further metabolize p-nitrophenol (PNP), an intermediate metabolite of MP. No discrepancy in minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) to cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and cobalt (Co) was observed between the engineered X3 strain and its host strain. The inoculated X3 strain accelerated MP degradation in different polluted soil microcosms with 100 mg MP kg dry soil and/or 5 mg Cd kg dry soil; MP was completely eliminated within 40 h. However, the presence of Cd in the early stage of remediation slightly delayed MP degradation. The application of X3 strain in Cd-contaminated soil strongly affected the distribution of Cd fractions and immobilized Cd by reducing bioavailable Cd concentrations with lower soluble/exchangeable Cd and organic-bound Cd. The inoculated X3 strain also colonized and proliferated in various contaminated microcosms. While the affordances of face-to-face and online environments have been studied somewhat extensively, there is relatively less research on how technology-mediated learning takes place across multiple media in the networked classroom environment where face-to-face and online interactions are intertwined, especially in the context of language learning. This case study contextually investigates the appropriation of a representational tool by students in small groups, in the context of collaborative second language writing activities. In this paper, micro-analysis of cross-media interactions is deployed to unravel how different groups of students evolve alternative approaches to appropriating the technology. The study explores the beneficial affordances of a representational tool that supplement face-to-face communication for second language learning, and draws implications for the design of collaborative L2 learning in networked classrooms. The treatment efficacy of Rituximab on lymphoma as an immunotherapeutic approach is confirmed, but this treatment has limited penetration through the brain micro vessels. Such limitation significantly attenuates the efficacy of systemic administration of this antibody on brain lymphomas. We aimed to confirm that Tadalafil, a long-acting phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor, could increase microvascular permeability and Rituximab treatment efficacy in brain lymphomas. We established a mouse brain lymphoma model by planting human-derived lymphoma cell line Raji into brain parenchyma of mice using stereotaxic techniques. After 16 days, 7.0 T magnetic resonance imaging was performed to confirm the presence of the mass. The mice were observed under near-infrared fluorescence after intravenous injection of fluorescence-labeled Rituximab. Evans Blue was used as probe to detect the microvascular permeability of brain lymphomas after Tadalafil administration. Starting from 4 days after implantation, the mice were administered different treatments. Survival analysis of brain lymphoma-loaded mice was performed. Evans Blue detection showed that Tadalafil administration could increase brain vascular permeability in the tumor-bearing group compared with control mice. Rituximab treatment prolonged the survival time of mice compared with the untreated control group (mean 25.75 vs. 20.8 days, p < 0.05). Tadalafil with Rituximab treatment resulted in the longest survival time (29 days, p < 0.05). Rituximab may be a promising therapeutic agent for the treatment of brain lymphoma. Immature dendritic cells (iDCs) are for cell transplantation; however, no method has yet been developed for in vivo monitoring the transplanted iDCs. We have explored the feasibility of using superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) labeling and magnetic resonance imaging for in vivo tracking of transplanted iDCs and determined the effects of SPIO labeling on iDC vaccination. With up to 50 μg Fe/ml, SPIO effectively labeled the iDCs without affecting their growth. At or above 100 μg Fe/ml, SPIO caused considerable damage to iDCs. SPIO labeling resulted in autophagosome formation and decreased the uptake of oxidized low density lipoprotein (ox-LDL), an exogenous antigen, by iDCs. SPIO and ox-LDL both localized to the lysosomes, and this competition for lysosomes could be partially responsible for the decreased ox-LDL phagocytic capacity of iDCs due to SPIO labeling.
