Purpose: This study aimed to compare facial 3D soft tissue changes in subjects with Class III deformities who underwent bimaxillary clockwise (CW) and counterclockwise (CCW) rotational orthognathic surgery. Methods: Asian Class III subjects who completed bimaxillary surgical orthodontic treatments were enrolled and categorized into CW and CCW groups based on maxillary occlusal plane alterations. Preoperative and 9-month follow-up cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and 3D stereophotogrammetry were obtained, superimposed, and quantified for skeletal movements and soft tissue changes in six facial regions. Inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) adjusted for potential confounding factors. Results: Thirty-seven subjects were included (CW group, n = 20; CCW group, n = 17). Postsurgical chin volume significantly reduced in the CW group compared to the CCW group (mean difference 6362 mm3; p = 0.037), and intergonial width significantly decreased in the CW group (mean difference 6.2 mm; p = 0.005). The postoperative alar width increased by 1.04 mm and 1.22 mm in the CW and CCW groups, respectively (p = 0.70). However, these changes were not significantly correlated to the direction of MMC pitch. Conclusion: Clockwise rotation of the bimaxillary complex demonstrated a significant advantage in reducing chin volume and intergonial width compared to counterclockwise rotation, leading to a reduced frontal lower face width among Asian Class III subjects. The main goal of the study is to evaluate the three stone scoring systems (S.T.O.N.E nephrolithometry scoring system (STONE), Guy's stone score (GSS) and Seoul National University Renal Stone Complexity (S-ReSC)) for the stone-free rate (SFR) of mini-PCNL. We retrospectively analyzed 72 patients who received mini-PCNL from February 2018 to October 2020. The SFR, complication rates, hospitalization days and recurrence rates were analyzed using three stone scoring systems. The result showed statistical significance in the association between scoring system and stone-free (STONE: OR 95%CI 0.409 (0.221–0.759), p = 0.0045; S-ReSC OR 95%CI 0.633 (0.401–0.999), p = 0.0497), but not GSS (OR 95%CI 0.776 (0.397–1.516), p = 0.4581). After adjusting the potential confounding factors, the area under curve (AUC) of STONE, GSS, and S-ReSC was 0.86, 0.78, and 0.81, respectively, and Akaike information criterion (AIC) of STONE, GSS, and S-ReSC was 64.65, 74.89, and 69.92, respectively. The accuracy rate of STONE, GSS, and S-ReSC was 0.81, 0.75, and 0.79, respectively. There was no statistically difference of predicting stone recurrence (p = 0.46, 0.53, 0.86), complications (p = 0.74, 0.51, 0.16) and hospitalization days (p = 0.77, 0.86, 0.87) in STONE, GSS, and S-ReSC, respectively. In conclusion, both the STONE and S-ReSC stone scoring systems are viable for predicting the SFR following mini-PCNL, especially after variable adjustment with the STONE system demonstrating superiority over S-ReSC. Objectives: To assess the surgical accuracy of 3D virtually planned orthognathic surgery among patients with and without cleft. Materials and methods: This retrospective cohort study included cleft and non-cleft patients with class III malocclusion who underwent bimaxillary surgery. CBCT scans were acquired before and immediately after surgery. 3D virtual surgical planning (VSP) was performed using CBCT and digitalized dentition data. All orthognathic surgeries were performed by the same surgeons using interocclusal splints. The primary outcome variable was surgical accuracy, defined as the difference between the planned and surgically achieved maxillary movements, quantified in six degrees of freedom. Analysis of covariance was used to test for intergroup differences in surgical accuracy after correcting for differences in the magnitude of planned surgical maxillary movements. Results: Twenty-eight cleft and 33 non-cleft patients were enrolled, with mean ages of 18.5 and 25.4 years, respectively (P=0.01). No significant gender difference was present between the groups (P=0.10). After adjustment for small differences in surgical movements, no significant differences in surgical accuracy were observed between cleft and non-cleft patients. Conclusion: The present study demonstrates that high surgical accuracy in maxillary movements can be achieved in both cleft and non-cleft patients using VSP and interocclusal splints. Progressive massive pulmonary fibrosis among coal miners has unexpectedly increased. It would likely due to the greater generation of smaller rock and coal particles produced by powerful equipment used in modern mines. There is limited understanding of the relationship between micro- or nanoparticles with pulmonary toxicity. This study aims to determine whether the size and chemical characteristics of typical coal-mining dust contribute to cellular toxicity. Size range, surface features, morphology, and elemental composition of coal and rock dust from modern mines were characterized. Human macrophages and bronchial tracheal epithelial cells were exposed to mining dust of three sub- micrometer and micrometer size ranges at varying concentrations, then assessed for cell viability and inflammatory cytokine expression. Coal had smaller hydrodynamic size (180–3000 nm) compared to rock (495–2160 nm) in their separated size fractions, more hydrophobicity, less surface charge, and consisted of more known toxic trace elements (Si, Pt, Fe, Al, Co). Larger particle size had a negative association with in-vitro toxicity in macrophages (p < 0.05). Fine particle fraction, approximately 200 nm for coal and 500 nm for rock particles, explicitly induced stronger inflammatory reactions than their coarser counterparts. Future work will study additional toxicity endpoints to further elucidate the molecular mechanism causing pulmonary toxicity and determine a dose–response curve. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Deletion of the conserved C-terminus of the Rothmund-Thomson syndrome helicase RECQ4 is highly tumorigenic. However, while the RECQ4 N-terminus is known to facilitate DNA replication initiation, the function of its C-terminus remains unclear. Using an unbiased proteomic approach, we identify an interaction between the RECQ4 N-terminus and the anaphase-promoting complex/cyclosome (APC/C) on human chromatin. We further show that this interaction stabilizes APC/C co-activator CDH1 and enhances APC/C-dependent degradation of the replication inhibitor Geminin, allowing replication factors to accumulate on chromatin. In contrast, the function is blocked by the RECQ4 C-terminus, which binds to protein inhibitors of APC/C. A cancer-prone, C-terminal-deleted RECQ4 mutation increases origin firing frequency, accelerates G1/S transition, and supports abnormally high DNA content. Our study reveals a role of the human RECQ4 C-terminus in antagonizing its N-terminus, thereby suppressing replication initiation, and this suppression is impaired by oncogenic mutations. RECQ4 mutations contribute to multiple developmental diseases and tumorigenesis. In rapidly urbanized regions, the development of sustainable and resilient urban agriculture is essential to reduce environmental pollution and ensure reusable resources. The purpose of this study was to design, implement, and analyze the effects of reclaimed water reuse systems on crop growth, water purification, and ecology. A simulated experimental field near the side of Li Tse Lake at MingDao University in Changhua County, Taiwan, was chosen as the research field. A reclaimed water reuse system was established to collect domestic sewage discharged from the student dormitory, and a soil filter bed and plants in the system were used to purify the sewage, so as to detect its effects on water quality, soil, plant growth, and ecology throughout the year. According to the results, the water purified by the reclaimed water reuse system met the agricultural irrigation water quality criteria. While the soil filter bed showed that the purified water was alkaline and had low electrical conductivity, this did not affect plant growth. In the reclaimed water reuse system, the cultivation of fruiting and leafy vegetables increased the habitats of a number of organisms, and a total of 49 families of arthropods in 13 orders were found. This study showed that the reclaimed water reuse system could not only purify water and promote water reuse but also improve the ecology and develop the potential for food production. Objectives: Surgery-first orthognathic surgery is rarely used in class III asymmetry due to concerns of reduced skeletal stability from unstable surgical occlusion. This study aimed to evaluate if skeletal stability after surgery-first orthognathic surgery is related to virtual surgical occlusal contact or surgical change. Materials and methods: We studied 58 adults with class III asymmetry, consecutively corrected by Le Fort I osteotomy and bilateral sagittal split osteotomy using a surgery-first approach. Dental casts were manually set to measure virtual surgical occlusal contact including contact distribution, contact number, and contact area. Cone-beam computed tomography taken before treatment, 1-week post-surgery, and after treatment was used to measure surgical change and post-surgical stability of the maxilla and mandible in translation (left/right, posterior/anterior, superior/inferior) and rotation (pitch, roll, yaw). The relationship between skeletal stability and surgical occlusal contact or surgical change was evaluated with correlation analysis. Results: Significant instability was found in the mandible but not in the maxilla. No correlation was found between the maxillary or mandibular stability and surgical occlusal contact (all p > 0.01). However, a significant correlation was found between the maxillary (roll and yaw) or mandibular (shift, roll and pitch) stability and its surgical change (all p < 0.001). Conclusions: In correction of class III asymmetry with surgery-first bimaxillary surgery, the skeletal stability is not related to the virtual surgical occlusal contact, but surgical skeletal change. Objectives: Patients with cleft lip–cleft palate (CLP) often require orthodontic treatment, with or without orthognathic surgery. Patient satisfaction is the most important outcome parameter in orthodontic treatment. This study aimed to (1) determine patient satisfaction and quality of life (QoL) after orthodontic treatment and (2) identify associated factors. Material and methods: This prospective cross-sectional study recruited patients with CLP who had completed orthodontic treatment at a craniofacial center in Taiwan. Participants (N=213) had received treatment for unilateral CLP (n=99), bilateral CLP (n=50), cleft lip and alveolus (n=39), and isolated cleft palate (n=25). Self-report questionnaires evaluated satisfaction with appearance and QoL; multiple regression analysis examined associated factors. Participants' expectations of treatment results were also reported. Results: Participants reported moderate satisfaction with facial appearance and QoL. Satisfaction with treatment was lower or much lower than expected for 13% of participants. Treatment for bilateral CLP was associated with the lowest satisfaction with overall appearance (r = −8.123, P < 0.05); participants who had received orthognathic surgery had the highest satisfaction (r = 5.534, P < 0.05). Treatment for unilateral and bilateral CLP was associated with low QoL for smile (both P < 0.05). Conclusions: Orthodontic treatment had a positive effect on facial appearance and quality of life in patients with CLP. Type of cleft and orthognathic surgery significantly influenced satisfaction with facial appearance. Hyperlipidemia, which is associated with certain environmental factors, is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Heavy metals are important pollutants from industrial emissions. However, the relationship between the exposure to heavy metals and the occurrence of hyperlipidemia is limited. This study aimed to investigate the association between serum metal levels and the risk of hyperlipidemia in adults living near a petrochemical complex. Our study subjects were 959 residents aged above 35 years in 11 townships near the largest petrochemical complex in central Taiwan. The serum levels of chromium, arsenic, and mercury in the study subjects were measured. The basic characteristics of the study subjects were collected via a questionnaire survey, and the levels of blood lipid biomarkers were analyzed by health examination. The definition of hyperlipidemia was defined in the provided guidelines. Adjusted generalized linear and logistic regression models were applied to evaluate the associations between petrochemical-related metal exposure and hyperlipidemia. The study subjects had chromium, arsenic, and mercury serum levels of 3.24±3.45, 3.45±4.66, and 1.24±1.08 (μg/L), respectively, and close proximity of the study subjects to the petrochemical complex was significantly associated with increased serum metal levels. The results showed that the total cholesterol levels were significantly associated with the increased serum chromium, arsenic, and mercury levels. And, the LDL-C levels were significantly associated with the increased serum mercury levels. In addition, the increased serum arsenic and mercury levels of the study subjects were significantly associated with higher odds ratios for abnormal total cholesterol levels and the risk of hyperlipidemia. Residing in close proximity to a petrochemical complex and high arsenic and mercury exposure were associated with elevated blood lipid levels and an increased risk of hyperlipidemia among the residential population in the vicinity of the petrochemical industry. Fibromyalgia syndrome (FM) is a multifactorial disorder whose pathogenesis and diagnosis are poorly understood. This study investigated differential serum proteome profiles in patients with FM and healthy pain-free controls and explored the association between serum proteome and clinical profiles in patients with FM. Twenty patients with FM (according to the American College of Rheumatology criteria, 2010) and 20 healthy pain-free controls were recruited for optimized quantitative serum proteomics analysis. The levels of pain, pressure pain threshold, sleep, anxiety, depression, and functional status were evaluated for patients with FM. We identified 22 proteins differentially expressed in FM when compared with healthy pain-free controls and propose a panel of methyltransferase-like 18 (METTL18), immunoglobulin lambda variable 3–25 (IGLV3–25), interleukin-1 receptor accessory protein (IL1RAP), and IGHV1OR21-1 for differentiating FM from controls by using a decision tree model (accuracy: 0.97). In addition, we noted several proteins involved in coagulation and inflammation pathways with distinct expression patterns in patients with FM. Novel proteins were also observed to be correlated with the levels of pain, depression, and dysautonomia in patients with FM. We suggest that upregulated inflammation can play a major role in the pathomechanism of FM. Standard inactivated influenza vaccines are poorly immunogenic in immunologically naive healthy young children, who are particularly vulnerable to complications from influenza. For them, there is an unmet need for better influenza vaccines. Oil-in-water emulsion-adjuvanted influenza vaccines are promising candidates, but clinical trials yielded inconsistent results. Here, we meta-analyze randomized controlled trials with efficacy data (3 trials, n = 15,310) and immunogenicity data (17 trials, n = 9062). Compared with non-adjuvanted counterparts, adjuvanted influenza vaccines provide a significantly better protection (weighted estimate for risk ratio of RT-PCR-confirmed influenza: 0.26) and are significantly more immunogenic (weighted estimates for seroprotection rate ratio: 4.6 to 7.9) in healthy immunologically naive young children. Nevertheless, in immunologically non-naive children, adjuvanted and non-adjuvanted vaccines provide similar protection and are similarly immunogenic. These results indicate that oil-in-water emulsion adjuvant improves the efficacy of inactivated influenza vaccines in healthy young children at the first-time seasonal influenza vaccination. Key message: Apocynin is a natural organic compound structurally related to vanillin. We demonstrated that hydrogen peroxide and heme oxygenase participated in apocynin-induced lateral root formation in rice. Abstract: Apocynin, also known as acetovanillone, is a natural organic compound structurally related to vanillin. Information concerning the effect of apocynin on plants is limited. In this study, we examined the effect of apocynin on lateral root (LR) formation in rice. Treatment with apocynin induced LR formation and increased HO production, but had no effect on nitric oxide production. Diphenyleneiodonium chloride, an inhibitor of HO generating NADPH oxidase, was effective in reducing apocynin-induced HO production and LR formation. Apocynin treatment also increased superoxide dismutase activity and decreased catalase activity. HO application was able to increase the number of LRs. Moreover, HO production caused by HO and apocynin was localized in the root area corresponding to the LR emergence. Treatment with HO and apocynin also increased heme oxygenase (HO) activity and induced OsHO1 mRNA expression. Lateral root formation and HO activity induced by HO and apocynin were reduced by Zn protoporphyrin IX (the specific inhibitor of HO). In this study, the hollow latex particle was synthesized by three processes. The first process was to synthesize the poly(methyl methacrylate- co-methacrylic acid) (poly(MMA-MAA)) copolymer latex particles by the method of soapless emulsion polymerization. Following the first process, the second process was to polymerize MMA, MAA, 3,3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate (MPS), and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate in the presence of poly(MMA-MAA) latex particles to form the linear poly(MMA-MAA)/crosslinking poly(MMA-MAA-MPS) core-shell latex particles. In the third process, the core-shell latex particles were heated in the presence of ammonia to form the poly(MMA-MAA-MPS) hollow latex particles. A sufficient heating time and high-heating temperature were necessary for the ammonia to dissolve the linear poly(MMA-MAA) core to form a perfect hollow structure. The crosslinking poly(MMA-MAA-MPS) shell was a barrier for the ammonia to diffuse into the latex particles so that the latex particle with the high-crosslinking shell showed an imperfect hollow structure. Besides, the hollow poly(MMA-MAA-MPS) latex particles reacted with ZnO nanoparticles, which were synthesized by a traditional sol-gel method, to form the polymer/inorganic poly(MMA-MAA-MPS)/ZnO composite hollow latex particles. With the increase of crosslinking degree would increase the amount of ZnO bonding. Moreover, the poly(MMA-MAA-MPS) hollow latex particles were used as carriers to load with the model drug, caffeine. Lateral root (LR) development performs the essential tasks of providing water, nutrients, and physical support to plants. Therefore, understanding the regulation of LR development is of agronomic importance. In this study, we examined the effect of nitric oxide (NO), auxin, and hemin (Hm) on LR formation in rice. Treatment with Hm [a highly effective heme oxygenase (HO) inducer], sodium nitroprusside (SNP, an NO donor), or indole-3-butyric acid (IBA, a naturally occurring auxin) induced LR formation and HO activity. LR formation and HO activity induced by SNP and IBA but not Hm was reduced by the specific NO scavenger 2-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide. As well, Hm, SNP, and IBA could induce OsHO1 mRNA expression. Zn protoporphyrin IX (the specific inhibitor of HO) and hemoglobin (the carbon monoxide/NO scavenger) reduced LR number and HO activity induced by Hm, SNP, and IBA. Studies on the clinical efficacy of influenza vaccination on patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are scant. The present study compared the incidence of hospitalization, morbidity, and mortality in patients with SLE between cohorts with and without influenza vaccination. We used the Taiwan's insurance claims data between 2001 and 2012 for identifying annual adult patients with SLE with (N = 1765) and without (N = 8360) influenza vaccination. The incidence rate ratio and hazard ratio (HR) for morbidities and mortality were measured for the vaccine and nonvaccine cohorts. The vaccine cohort had a lower hospitalization rate than did the nonvaccine cohort, with an adjusted HR of 0.82 (95% CI 0.73-0.92). Furthermore, the vaccine cohort was less likely to be admitted to the intensive care unit [adjusted HR 0.55 (95% CI 0.39-0.79)], to be hospitalized for septicemia, bacteremia, or viremia [adjusted HR 0.48 (95% CI 0.32-0.73)], to undergo in-hospital dialysis [adjusted HR 0.40 (95% CI 0.20-0.81)], and were less predisposed to death [adjusted HR 0.41 (95% CI 0.27-0.61)].
