Parents' gender role attitudes are pertinent to child adjustment. Importantly, parental involvement may help to explain the link between parents' gender role attitudes and child adjustment. In this study, we investigated the differential contributions of mothers' and fathers' gender role attitudes on child adjustment, with the quality of mother and father involvement as mediators. Given that parental involvement is gender-differentiated in the Chinese context, actor and partner effects of mothers' and fathers' gender role attitudes on parental involvement were also examined. Participants were 211 maritally intact families from China, including mothers and fathers of children aged 4 to 7 years old. The findings based on structural equation modeling identified the actor and partner effects of fathers' greater traditional gender role attitudes on a lower quality of mother and father involvement, whereas mothers' greater traditional gender role attitudes were only related to a lower quality of mother involvement. Greater mother and father involvement was further associated with children's greater prosocial behavior. The findings suggested the mediating role of the combined mother and father involvement between fathers' gender role attitudes and children's prosocial behavior. This study underscores the interdependent nature of mothers' and fathers' behavior on child adjustment. The findings inform researchers and practitioners of the importance of reducing both parents' traditional gender role attitudes and enhancing the quality of parental involvement to foster child adjustment. The present study tested the mediating role of maladaptive emotion regulation and trust in parents between parent–child conflict and emerging adults' depressive symptoms. A total of 196 Chinese emerging adults at 18–25 years of age (M = 20.02; SD = 2.67; 43.88% women) completed an online self-reported questionnaire on parent–child conflict, trust in parents, emotion regulation, and depressive symptoms. Path analyses were conducted to analyze the cross-sectional data. Findings suggested that parent–child conflict was associated with greater maladaptive emotion regulation and depressive symptoms. Mother–child conflict was associated with emerging adults' lower trust in mothers. Also, trust in fathers was associated with fewer depressive symptoms. Regardless of the parents' gender, maladaptive emotion regulation and trust did not mediate the relation between parent–child conflict and depressive symptoms. Despite the null findings of the mediation processes, the study advanced our knowledge about the role of family processes in emerging adults' depressive symptoms, particularly in the Chinese context. Objectives: Maternal stress is associated with a myriad of maladjusted outcomes among children. To identify the role of mindful parenting between mothers' stress and child adjustment during the COVID-19 pandemic, this study tested competing hypotheses with mothers' mindful parenting as a mediator versus a moderator. Methods: A total of 172 Chinese mothers of preschool-aged children participated in this study. Participants completed a self-report measure of stress during COVID-19 and mindful parenting, as well as a mother-report measure of children's prosocial behavior, internalizing problems, and externalizing problems. Structural equation models were conducted to examine the mediation versus moderation effects of mindful parenting between mothers' stress during COVID-19 and child adjustment, after controlling for family income, children's age, sex, and adjustment at baseline. Results: Findings indicated that mindful parenting mediated the link between mothers' stress during COVID-19 and child adjustment, including internalizing problems, externalizing problems, and prosocial behavior. A test of competing hypothesis showed that mindful parenting did not moderate between mothers' stress during COVID-19 and child adjustment. Conclusions: This study revealed the mediating effects of mindful parenting between mothers' perceived stress during COVID-19 and child adjustment. Objectives: Parental self-care is extremely important in the face of stress throughout parenthood. A 21-day online mindfulness-based intervention was developed that was aimed at enhancing parental well-being. The present study evaluated this intervention by examining its initial efficacy on parents' mindfulness, parenting stress, subjective well-being, and symptoms of depression and anxiety. Methods: Participants were 273 parents (90.11% mothers) who were randomly assigned to the 21-day mindfulness-based intervention group (n = 136) or waitlist control group (n = 137). Pre-intervention assessment, immediate post-intervention assessment, and 30-day follow-up assessment were conducted to assess parents' mindfulness, parenting stress, subjective well-being, and symptoms of depression and anxiety. Results: Linear mixed models indicated that the group × time effects on subjective well-being, anxiety symptoms, and mindfulness were significant, after controlling for sex, age, education, income, habit of mindfulness practice, hours of weekly mindfulness practice, and diagnostic history of psychiatric disorder. Follow-up analyses indicated that compared to baseline, participants from the intervention group reported significantly greater subjective well-being and mindfulness, and fewer symptoms of anxiety than did those from the waitlist control group. The group × time effects on parenting stress and depressive symptoms were non-significant. Exploratory findings further suggested practicality and perceived acceptability of the intervention. Conclusions: This study showed initial efficacy of a 21-day online mindfulness-based intervention on parents' subjective well-being, anxiety symptoms, and mindfulness. The findings inform researchers and practitioners about the utility of a brief mindfulness-based intervention in promotion parental well-being. Objectives: Research shows that compassion from others and from the self may enable university students to face, overcome, and bounce back from adversity and generate a greater sense of thriving and meaning in life. However, the underlying processes are largely unknown. The present study aimed to examine the associations of compassion with psychological distress, flourishing, and meaning in life among university students and explore the mechanisms underlying these associations. Methods: A total of 536 Hong Kong university students completed questionnaires measuring their experiences of compassion from others, self-compassion, resilience, psychological distress, flourishing, and meaning in life. Results: Serial mediation analyses showed that compassion from others was associated positively with self-compassion, which was, in turn, linked to greater resilience and consequently lower levels of psychological distress and higher levels of flourishing and meaning in life. Conclusions: Our findings reveal the associations of compassion from others and self-compassion with the well-being and life meaning of university students. The findings highlight the importance of being open and receptive to love and kindness from others. The findings also point to the importance of developing a caring attitude toward oneself. Objectives: Parental depression is linked to a myriad of child adjustment outcomes. To identify the potential processes between parents' depressive symptoms and child adjustment in early childhood, this cross-sectional study investigated mindful parenting and children's self-regulation as mediators. Methods: Participants were 320 Chinese families involving maritally intact mothers, fathers, and children (49.01% girls) from 34.73 to 55.66 months old (M = 46.32, SD = 3.77). Mothers and fathers completed self-report questionnaires assessing parental depressive symptoms, mindful parenting, children's self-regulation, and adjustment outcomes. Children completed a task assessing their self-regulation. A structural equation model was conducted to examine the mediation model cross-sectionally. Results: The structural equation model indicated that mindful parenting and children's self-regulation mediated the association between parents' depressive symptoms and children's adjustment. Specifically, mothers' and fathers' depressive symptoms were associated with their own, but not their spouses', mindful parenting. Mindful parenting was then associated with children's self-regulation, which was related to internalizing problems, externalizing problems, and prosocial behavior. Differential findings as a function of parents' gender were also indicated. Conclusions: The present study revealed mindful parenting and children's self-regulation as mediators between parental depressive symptoms and adjustment in early childhood. Both mothers' and fathers' depressive symptoms were associated with mindful parenting, which was crucial for children's self-regulation, psychosocial adjustment, and behavioral adjustment. Grounded in emotional security theory and a dualistic model of harmony, the present study tested a moderated mediation model of disintegration avoidance, interparental conflict, and emotional security associated with child adjustment. A total of 70 Chinese parents completed a set of questionnaires on parents' disintegration avoidance (i.e., a dimension of harmony), constructive interparental conflict, and children's emotional security, internalizing problems, and externalizing problems (32 girls and 38 boys; Mage = 4.83 years old; SDage = 1.90). Multi-group path analysis was conducted to examine the mediating role of children's emotional security between constructive interparental conflict and child adjustment between parents with high vs. low disintegration avoidance. Significant pathways emerged to suggest emotional security as a mediator when parents reported a high level of disintegration avoidance. Supplementary analysis with disintegration avoidance as a continuous moderator suggested that disintegration avoidance and constructive conflict interactively predicted emotional security. Post-hoc simple slopes analysis further revealed that the relation between constructive interparental conflict and emotional security had a positive trend when disintegration avoidance was high. The findings enhanced our knowledge on the mediating role of emotional security in the context of Chinese culture. Evidence informs translational research in promoting constructive interparental conflict and emotional security as assets of child adjustment, particularly in families experiencing a high level of disintegration avoidance. Objectives: The present study aimed to elucidate the mediating vs. moderating role of parenting stress between parents' characteristics, including parents' disposition to mindful parenting, affiliate stigma, and mental well-being, and the behavioral adjustment of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Methods: A total of 136 Chinese parents of children with ASD under 18 years of age participated in this cross-sectional study. Results: Mediation findings showed that parenting stress mediated the relation between parents' characteristics (i.e., parents' disposition to mindful parenting and affiliated stigma) and behavioral difficulties in children with ASD. While parents' mental well-being did not explain the variability of parenting stress, parenting stress undermined mental well-being. Parents' mental well-being was also related to children's prosocial behaviors. However, their mental well-being did not mediate between parenting stress and children's prosocial behaviors. Competing test of parenting stress as a moderator did not yield significant findings. Conclusions: These findings inform applied intervention efforts to promote parents' mindful parenting and mental well-being as resources that generate multiple outcomes in children with ASD. The present prospective study tested the mediating processes between mindfulness and symptoms of depression and anxiety among Chinese emerging adults in Hong Kong. A total of 333 emerging adults between 18 and 26 years of age (male = 95; female = 238) completed a questionnaire for four times in two consecutive years, with each time point spanning 6 months apart. Findings based on multi-group path analysis and bootstrapping indicated that the longitudinal association between mindfulness and depressive symptoms was mediated by regulatory processes including awareness and acceptance of negative emotions, impulse control difficulties, and emotion regulation, regardless of gender. A marginal trend was also indicated for the mediation processes between mindfulness and anxiety symptoms. The present findings underscore the importance of mindfulness in mental health through a chain of longitudinal mediating mechanisms. In addition to enriching the mindfulness literature in diverse ecological contexts, evidence was advanced to inform prevention and intervention efforts in promoting mindfulness as an asset associated with mental health. The present study tested the mediating role of adolescents’ emotional intelligence for the effects of family risks on adolescent adjustment in two Chinese settings, namely Hong Kong and Macau. A total of 804 Chinese adolescents (36.3% female) in Hong Kong (n = 441) and Macau (n = 363) completed a set of self-reported questionnaires. Findings based on path analysis suggested that economic stress was positively associated with family conflict. In addition, family risks including economic stress and family conflict were inversely associated with adolescents’ emotional intelligence and prosocial behaviors, and positively associated with both internalizing and externalizing problems. Bootstrapping supported emotional intelligence as a mediating mechanism between family risks and adolescent adjustment, as indexed by their prosocial behaviors, internalizing problems, and externalizing problems. Multi-group path analysis further demonstrated gender similarities in the risk and protective processes underlying adolescent adjustment. Extending the findings based on studies conducted in Western contexts, the present research indicated the detrimental effects of family stressors, including economic stress and family conflict, on adolescent functioning in Hong Kong and Macau. Grounded in a conceptual model of family processes underlying socioemotional development and a contextual model of parenting style, the present study addresses the associations between parenting practices, mothers’ emotion socialization, and child adjustment in middle childhood. A total of 217 families involving mothers, fathers, and 8-year-old children (101 boys, 116 girls) were recruited to participate in this study. Findings suggested that fathers’ inconsistent discipline and positive parenting practices predicted greater and fewer children’s adjustment problems, respectively, over and above the effect of mothers’ parenting practices. Mothers’ emotion discussion with children predicted children’s lower externalizing problems. Mothers’ emotion discussion further buffered the association between mothers’ inconsistent discipline and children’s internalizing problems, such that children exhibited fewer internalizing problems when mothers engaged in moderate to high levels of emotion discussion with children. Supporting family systems theory, both mothers’ and fathers’ parenting processes contributed to child development. These findings add to the literature by providing evidence for cumulative family asset and risk underlying child adjustment.
