This paper presents a study on the stabilization of hazardous tin mine tailings (TMT) using a metakaolin-based geopolymer binder for their potential reuse as geomaterials in geotechnical works. The extensive laboratory testing evaluated the mechanical properties, such as unconfined compressive strength, and the durability properties, including mass loss during freezing–thawing and wetting–drying cycles. Environmental assessment included the analysis of leached heavy metal concentration using Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP). Additionally, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was conducted to investigate the microstructure of the stabilized TMT. Satisfactory results show that improvements in mechanical and durability properties depend on variations in metakaolin content, NaOH molarity, and compaction density. The novel porosity/binder index (η/Biv) has proven to be effective in predicting the behavior of mixtures. Additionally, it demonstrated that freezing–thawing cycles have a more adverse impact on the durability of the examined mixtures. Laboratory results for mechanical strength, durability, and immobilization of hazardous heavy metals demonstrate the potential performance of TMTs for safe reuse in geotechnical works, specifically as a geomaterial for subbase and base layers of pavement exposure to severe environment and climate of the Andean highlands. Introduction: Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAr) antibody encephalitis is an autoimmune disorder characterized by synaptic NMDAr current disruption and receptor hypofunction, often affecting women during pregnancy. Clinical manifestations associated with anti-NMDAr encephalitis can occur both in the mother and fetus. Methods: We generated a systematic search of the literature to identify epidemiological, clinical, and serological data related to pregnant women with anti-NMDAr encephalitis and their children, analyzing the fetal outcomes. We examined the age and neurologic symptoms of the mothers, the presence of an underlying tumor, immunotherapies used during pregnancy, duration of the pregnancy, and type of delivery. Results: Data from 41 patients were extrapolated from the included studies. Spontaneous interruption of pregnancy, premature birth, and cesarean section were reported in pregnant women with NMDAr encephalitis. Several fetal and neonatal symptoms (e.g., movement disorders, spina bifida, poor sucking, respiratory distress, cardiac arrhythmias, infections, icterus, hypoglycemia, and low birth weight) depending on the mother's serum anti-NR1 concentration were also reported. Conclusions: We characterized the outcomes of children born from mothers with anti-NMDAr encephalitis, analyzing the pivotal risk factors related to pregnancy and maternal disorder. Neuropsychiatric involvement seems strictly related to pathogenic NMDAr antibodies detected in maternal and/or neonatal serum. These findings clarify a complex condition to manage, outlining the risks associated with pregnant women with anti-NMDAr encephalitis and also providing a concrete guide for therapeutic strategies to prevent potential harm to the fetus and the child's neurodevelopment. Purpose: Microwave ablation (MWA) and conventional transarterial chemoembolization (cTACE) are locoregional treatments commonly performed in very early, early and intermediate stages of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Despite combined locoregional approaches have shown encouraging results in obtaining complete tumor necrosis, their application in a single session is poorly described. Our aim was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of single-session MWA and cTACE treatment in 5-cm HCCs and its influence on liver function. Materials and methods: All 5-cm HCCs treated by MWA and cTACE performed in a single-session in our Interventional Radiology unit between January 2020 and December 2022 were retrospectively recorded and analyzed. Patients with poor or missing pre- and post-treatment imaging were excluded. Technical success, clinical success, and complications rate were examined as primary endpoints. Pre- and post-treatment liver function laboratory parameters were also evaluated. Results: A total of 15 lesions (mean lesion diameter, 5.0 ± 1.4 cm) in 15 patients (11 men; mean age, 67.1 ± 8.9 years) were retrospectively evaluated. Technical and clinical success were 100% and 73%, respectively. Four (27%) cases of partial response and no cases of progressive or stable disease were recorded. AST and ALT values have found to be significantly higher in post-treatment laboratory tests. No other significant differences between pre- and post-treatment laboratory values were registered. AST and ALT pre- and post-treatment higher differences (ΔAST and ΔALT) were significantly associated with a lower clinical success rate. Conclusion: MWA and cTACE single-session approach is safe and effective for 5-cm HCCs, without significant liver function impairment. Type 2 diabetes represents a growing challenge for global public health. Its prevalence is increasing worldwide, and, like obesity, it affects progressively younger populations compared to the past, with potentially greater impact on chronic complications. Dual glucagon like peptide 1 (GLP1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide (GIP) receptor agonists are among the new pharmacological strategies recently developed to address this challenge. Tirzepatide, characterized by its ability to selectively bind and activate receptors for the intestinal hormones GIP and GLP-1, has been tested in numerous clinical studies and is already currently authorized in several countries for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity. In this context, the aim of the present document is to summarize, in the form of a narrative literature review, the currently available data on the main mechanisms of action of GIP/GLP-1 co-agonists and the clinical effects of tirzepatide evaluated in various clinical trials. We investigate the therapeutic potential of Aloin A and Aloin B, two natural compounds derived from Aloe vera leaves, focusing on their neuroprotective and anticancer properties. The structural differences between these two epimers suggest that they may exhibit distinct pharmacological properties. Our investigations revealed that both epimers are not stable in aqueous solution and tend to degrade rapidly, with their concentration decreasing by over 50% within approximately 12 h. These results underscore the importance of addressing issues such as the need for encapsulation into effective drug delivery systems to enhance stability. ThT fluorescence experiments showed that neither compound was able to inhibit Aβ amyloid aggregation, indicating that other mechanisms may be responsible for their neuroprotective effects. Next, an equimolar mixture of Aloin A and Aloin B demonstrated an ability to inhibit proteasome in tube tests, which is suggestive of potential anticancer properties, in accordance with antiproliferative effects observed in neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y and HeLa cell lines. Higher water stability and increased antiproliferative activity were observed by encapsulation in carbon dot nanoparticles, suggesting a promising potential for further in vivo studies. Understanding the strength behavior and leaching characteristics of mining tailings stabilized with alkali-activated cements in the short, medium, and long term is crucial for the feasibility of material applications. In this context, this study assessed the stabilization/solidification of iron ore tailings (IOT) using alkali-activated binder (AAB) composed of sugarcane bagasse ash and eggshell lime at curing times of 7, 28, 60, 90, 180, and 365 days. Additionally, leaching tests were conducted, along with the examination of possible changes in the chemical and mineralogical composition resulting from exposure to acidic environments. Tests included unconfined compression strength (UCS), leaching, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy for the IOT-AAB mixtures. The highest increase in UCS was observed between 7 and 60 days, reaching 6.47 MPa, with minimal variation thereafter. The AAB-bonded IOT exhibited no metal toxicity over time. Elements Ba, Mn, Pb, and Zn present in IOT and ash were encapsulated in the cemented matrix, with complete encapsulation of all metals observed from 90 days of curing time. The mineralogy of the stabilized/solidified tailings showed no changes resulting from leaching tests. Characteristic bands associated with the presence of N-A-S–H gel were identified in both pre-leaching and post-leaching samples for all curing times analyzed. Chromium contamination of soils is a worldwide issue because of the risks related to such a heavy metal as it presents elevated carcinogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic characteristics. This highlights the importance of developing feasible remediation strategies for chromium-contaminated sites. The present research employs the adjusted porosity/cement index (η /(Civ)0.28 = 18, 20, and 23) to define the dosages for stabilizing a hexavalent chromium-contaminated silty soil, considering stabilization and solidification S/S approach. Mechanical (unconfined compressive strength, small strain stiffness, and durability) and environmental (solubility and leachability tests) were conducted on different compacted silty sand-Portland cement mixtures contaminated with hexavalent chromium considering a seven-day curing period. The main findings indicate the usefulness of the porosity/cement index approach in defining the dosage for S/S applications, particularly when considering the mechanical aspects. Also, the tested dosages were helpful in substantially reducing the solubility and leachability of chromium. Dry stacking emerges as a prominent disposition method in the Brazilian mining industry, where filtered mine tailings compact onto hydraulically disposed tailings in pits. Challenges in obtaining saturated undisturbed samples of hydraulically disposed tailings elevate the importance of selecting a suitable reconstitution methods. Thus, the imperative lies in identifying a method accurately reflecting material behaviour. This study assesses the mechanical response of hydraulically disposed silty iron ore tailings (IOT) from a former mining pit using two distinct preparation methods: moist tamping (MT) and slurry deposition (SD). Specimens undergo thorough mechanical behaviour testing, including both monotonic and cyclic simple shear tests. Both methods precisely target the material's highest observed void ratio (1.3) from its slurry composition. Results under the studied conditions reveal that MT and SD methods yield specimens with remarkably similar general behaviour. This finding not only underscores the efficacy of both preparation methods but also highlights their potential interchangeability. Tailings disposal is a major concern of the mining industry worldwide. After the recent upstream dam failures, the main tailings disposal method studied in Brazil is dry stacking. The mechanical behaviour of tailings disposed of by dry stacking can be enhanced by ground improvement techniques such as compaction effort, cement, and fibre insertion. Accordingly, the study was carried out herein to analyse the mechanical behaviour of a fibre-reinforced cemented iron ore tailings (IOT) through unconfined compression tests in specimens moulded at different points on the compaction curve using 1%, 3% and 5% of Portland cement and zero and 0.5% of polypropylene fibres as an alternative to enhance the overall performance of dry tailings storage facilities. The results showed that compacted fibre-reinforced cemented IOT strength and stiffness vary according to the dry unit weight and moisture content moulding point on the standard Proctor compaction curve. In addition, adding fibres to the compacted cemented IOT turns the brittle behaviour into a ductile one, especially for 1% of cement. Such enhancement is fundamental to guarantee the safety of iron dry stacks. Also, failure patterns are directly related to the moulding point on the compaction curve. Moreover, adding fibres has increased the strength of cemented and uncemented IOT, thus allowing the adoption of smaller cement contents. High-grade gliomas (HGGs) constitute the most common malignant primary brain tumor with a poor prognosis despite the standard multimodal therapy. In recent years, immunotherapy has changed the prognosis of many cancers, increasing the hope for HGG therapy. We conducted a comprehensive search on PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science databases to include relevant studies. This study was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Fifty-two papers were finally included (44 phase II and eight phase III clinical trials) and further divided into four different subgroups: 14 peptide vaccine trials, 15 dendritic cell vaccination (DCV) trials, six immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) trials, and 17 miscellaneous group trials that included both "active" and "passive" immunotherapies. In the last decade, immunotherapy created great hope to increase the survival of patients affected by HGGs; however, it has yielded mostly dismal results in the setting of phase III clinical trials. An in-depth analysis of these clinical results provides clues about common patterns that have led to failures at the clinical level and helps shape the perspective for the next generation of immunotherapies in neuro-oncology. Stacking compacted filtered tailings has become an option to cope with the new Brazilian regulations while providing a safe disposal method for the tailings. It has become feasible due to recent developments in dewatering technologies. Still, the dewatering processes may need to be improved to attain acceptable moisture contents considering the on-field compactable range. Also, the filtered material's moisture content is highly influenced by the weather conditions, especially during the rainy season in the southeast of Brazil. Additives are a possible solution to accelerate moisture reduction. However, scientific studies in the technical literature still need to attest to the effectiveness of these methods to tailings, mainly on a full scale. Accordingly, the present research evaluates the performance of two additives to hasten filtered iron ore tailings drying for dry stacking purposes: commercially available quicklime and superabsorbent polymer. Also, undrained triaxial tests were conducted on specimens retrieved from on-field compacted layers to investigate the additive's influence on the tailings' mechanical behaviour. Initial confining pressures ranging from 100 to 600 kPa were used. The results have shown the inefficacy of the superabsorbent additives in boosting the drying process for on-field conditions and the efficiency of the quicklime in doing so. Furthermore, no substantial changes in the mechanical response were observed due to the insertion of quicklime. Objectives: This study aimed to compare the impact of pre- and postoperative etoricoxib administration versus only postoperative on third molar extraction sequelae and oral health quality of life. Materials and methods: This prospective quasi experimental study involved 56 patients, divided into a study group receiving preemptive etoricoxib 120 mg before surgery and postoperative etoricoxib 120 mg (n = 28), and a control group receiving preemptive placebo before surgery and postoperative etoricoxib 120 mg (n = 28). Follow-up assessments were conducted at 3- and 7-days post-surgery, recording swelling, trismus, and adverse events. Patients rated perceived pain using the visual analog scale (VAS) and completed an oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) questionnaire at specified intervals. Statistical analysis employed non-parametric tests (i.e., the Mann–Whitney test, Friedman test, and Wilcoxon sign test) with P < 0.05. Results: Significantly lower VAS scores were reported in the study group throughout the follow-up period (P < 0.05). Pharmacological protocol did not have a significant impact on postoperative edema and trismus (P > 0.05). However, double etoricoxib intake significantly improved postoperative quality of life on day 3 after surgery (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Pre- and postoperative etoricoxib 120 mg intake in third molar surgery reduced postoperative pain and enhanced postoperative quality of life on day 3 after surgery. Importantly, it was equally effective in managing swelling and trismus compared to exclusive postoperative intake. At the end of the summer 2021, an increase in CO2 emissions at Vulcano brought an increase in the alert level and, consequently, to the upgrade of the monitoring activities by increasing the number of instruments deployed and the rate of the surveys. One of the new devices installed was a geodetic GNSS mobile network for a real-time and high-frequency monitoring of ground deformation, to increase the detail with respect to the existing permanent network. The mobile stations were initially installed at the northern base of the La Fossa crater, where the highest values of soil degassing were recorded. Two stations were co-located with gravimeters, in order to compare and integrate the data. After this very first period of testing, the mobile GNSS array has been reconfigured, to investigate the mud pool area. Thus, four stations were installed around the degassing area, one of them being in the same site of the gravimeter. Data has been acquired at 1 Hz rate and is used for the weekly reporting to Civil Protection. It was the first experience of a light and quick-to-install geodetic real-time and high-rate GNSS mobile network in this area, and it was the occasion for testing its performance, as well as different approaches for the real-time kinematic (RTK) differential positioning in order to find the most suitable for the ongoing phenomena. Furthermore, direct data communication and archiving in the institutional database have been implemented for immediate querying from the control room tools. We report the experiences collected during the installation phase, site selection, RTK approaches, and ground motion and provide the daily raw data in RINEX format for any future precise postprocessing for the mid- to long-term analyses. Influenza is associated with a substantial health burden, especially in high-risk subjects such as older adults, frail individuals and those with underlying chronic diseases. In this review, we summarized clinical findings regarding the impact of influenza in vulnerable populations, highlighted the benefits of influenza vaccination in preventing severe illness and complications and reviewed the main evidence on the efficacy, effectiveness and safety of the vaccines that are best suited to older adults among those available in Italy. The adverse outcomes associated with influenza infection in elderly and frail subjects and those with underlying chronic diseases are well documented in the literature, as are the benefits of vaccination (mostly in older adults and in patients with cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and chronic lung disease). High-dose and adjuvanted inactivated influenza vaccines were specifically developed to provide enhanced immune responses in older adults, who generally have low responses mainly due to immunosenescence, comorbidities and frailty. These vaccines have been evaluated in clinical studies and systematic reviews by international immunization advisory boards, including the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. The high-dose vaccine is the only licensed influenza vaccine to have demonstrated greater efficacy versus a standard-dose vaccine in preventing laboratory-confirmed influenza in a randomized controlled trial. Despite global recommendations, the vaccination coverage in high-risk populations is still suboptimal. Sustainability is a core topic for all sectors including geotechnical engineering (e.g., design of foundations, earthworks structures, and pavements for major infrastructure and building projects). Despite being comprised of environmental, economic, and social pillars, most sustainability studies in this area have focused on the first. Furthermore, social impacts and the three pillars integration are little explored. As a result, there is a lack of systemic and holistic assessments of innovative geotechnical alternatives. This research advances in this area by performing a complete sustainability assessment and integration of the environmental, economic, and social pillars of two expansive soil stabilization alternatives: (i) sugar cane bagasse ash combined with hydrated eggshell lime alkali-activated by sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and (ii) Portland cement. Individual analyses were carried out to determine the environmental, economic, and social impacts, and the single sustainability index. Alkali-activated binder dosages showed higher impacts in 4 out of 10 environmental categories. For both binders, high-density/low-binder dosages contributed to environmental and economic sustainability as they require lower quantities of raw materials and diesel for materials transportation. The total costs of alkali-activated binder dosages ($189.79 and $154.45) were higher than that of Portland cement ($72.49 and $54.04), mainly due to the high cost of NaOH acquisition. However, the alkali-activated binder dosages implied lower carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and thus lower social cost of CO2. The alternative binder presented a higher positive social impact. Slurry tailings storage in large impoundments has been largely used worldwide for a long time, as their cost is very competitive. However, recent disasters have brought to light the need to better comprehend the mechanics of the materials stored and to search for disposal alternatives to overcome the drawbacks. One possibility is the filtered tailings disposal (dry stacking) which requires a better understanding of the material's response in a dewatered (through filtration) and compacted condition. This paper compares two tailings from the same beneficiation (treatment) plant with different gradings and mineralogy, related to the beneficial processes they undergo. A series of triaxial tests comprising isotropic compression without shearing specimens, as well as isotropic compression followed by drained (CID) and undrained (CIU) shearing, and K-compression followed by undrained (CKU) shearing specimens were conducted over a range of confining pressures and initial compaction degrees. The experimental program allowed the evaluation of convergence for normal compression lines (NCLs) and the analysis under the light of critical state soil mechanics for the stress–strain response of the tested materials. The research outcomes show that changes in iron ore tailings gradings due to different production processes and the use of different compaction degrees had an influence on its behavior (compression and shearing) at lower stress levels, while at higher stresses levels, this difference is erased and there is a convergence for unique and parallels NCL and CSL on ν–ln p′ plane with a spacing of 2.71. The technique of mass soil stabilization using alternative binders to Portland cement (PC) has been used successfully in the past. However, knowledge gaps exist regarding the design of these binders. Ground-granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) has been widely used as a substitute for PC; however, it requires an alkaline activator (e.g. lime and PC) to promote pozzolanic reaction and strength enhancement. A candidate that presents a less energy-intensive manufacturing and carbon footprint is carbide lime (CL), a by-product of acetylene gas production, rich in Ca(OH)2. The main problem with the pozzolanic binder in the stabilization technique is its slow reaction kinetics and the long time required for laboratory-scale investigations before in situ application. Therefore, this research presents a dosing study of a ternary binder (TB) comprising CL, GGBS and PC type III (CEM-III) to mass-stabilize a clayey organic soil using thermal curing as an innovative technique to improve the feasibility of laboratory-scale investigations. The effects of binder composition and thermal curing time on the evolution of strength, stiffness, mineralogy, and microstructure were determined. The results, supported by a statistical analysis (ANOVA) and by a multivariate regression analysis (MRA), have shown that the new TB produced a superior mechanical response to soil samples stabilized exclusively with CEM-III. This was evidenced by a less porous microstructure (more reaction products) and mainly the formation of a C–A–S–H gel, as a product of CEM-III hydration and alkaline activation of GGBS (blended cement), whereby the CL content played a key role for the development of the long-term pozzolanic reaction. The adjusted porosity/cement index η/(Civ)a has proved its effectiveness in modeling the strength and stiffness of a variety of artificially cemented soils, being a useful tool for the dosage of soil–cement mixes. In this regard, an analogous mechanical response is expected by establishing a specific η/(Civ)a value, either by increasing the cement content and decreasing the density (or the opposite). Still, the role of this sort of dosage change has not yet been verified for triaxial testing. Particularly, the effect of different dosages assembled at the same η/(Civ)a value has not yet been evaluated considering the effective peak stress parameters. Thus, the present research fulfills this gap by conducting a series of CID triaxial tests in cemented clayey sand. Complementary small strain stiffness tests and unconfined compression strength tests were also carried out. This research comprehended five η/(Civ)a values, considering, at least, three different dosages assembled within each η/(Civ)a. The test data have revealed that both the stiffness and the strength outcomes could be properly correlated to the η/(Civ)a, regardless of the dosage type, resulting in power-type relationships having R2 greater than 98%. Yet, the effective peak stress parameters (ϕ´peak and c´peak) could not be related to the η/(Civ)a index owing to the dosage dependence of the strength mobilization mechanisms. That is, within the same η/(Civ)a, the most cemented and most porous samples presented a cement-dominant response whereas the least cemented and least porous exhibited a density-controlled behavior. Background: Predicting a challenging clot when performing mechanical thrombectomy in acute stroke can be difficult. One reason for this difficulty is a lack of agreement on how to precisely define these clots. We explored the opinions of stroke thrombectomy and clot research experts regarding challenging clots, defined as difficult to recanalize clots by endovascular approaches, and clot/patient features that may be indicative of such clots. Methods: A modified DELPHI technique was used before and during the CLOTS 7.0 Summit, which included experts in thrombectomy and clot research from different specialties. The first round included open-ended questions and the second and final rounds each consisted of 30 closed-ended questions, 29 on various clinical and clot features, and 1 on number of passes before switching techniques. Consensus was defined as agreement ≥ 50%. Features with consensus and rated ≥ 3 out of 4 on the certainty scale were included in the definition of a challenging clot. Results: Three DELPHI rounds were performed. Panelists achieved consensus on 16/30 questions, of which 8 were rated 3 or 4 on the certainty scale, namely white-colored clots (mean certainty score 3.1), calcified clots under histology (3.7) and imaging (3.7), stiff clots (3.0), sticky/adherent clots (3.1), hard clots (3.1), difficult to pass clots (3.1) and clots that are resistant to pulling (3.0). Most panelists considered switching endovascular treatment (EVT) techniques after 2–3 unsuccessful attempts. Conclusion: This DELPHI consensus identified 8 distinct features of a challenging clot. The varying degree of certainty amongst the panelists emphasizes the need for more pragmatic studies to enable accurate a priori identification of such occlusions prior to EVT. The article critically examines an editorial on the vulnerability of youths with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). This study evaluated the stabilization of iron ore tailings (IOTs) with an alkali-activated binder (AAB) produced from sugar cane bagasse ash, hydrated eggshell lime, and sodium hydroxide solution. Unconfined compressive strength, split tensile strength, initial shear stiffness, mineralogy, chemical composition, and microstructure of IOTs-AAB were evaluated. Strength values up to 6.59 MPa were achieved after 28 days-curing at 40 °C. Reducing porosity and increasing the binder content improved the overall mechanical behavior. Quality control assessment of cemented pavement layers typically involves extracting cores and subjecting them to unconfined compression tests. This research focuses on evaluating the applicability of the porosity/cement (η/Civ) index in field pavement projects. The study investigates wetting–drying accumulated loss of mass and unconfined compression tests on soil–cement cores that were mixed, compacted, and cured in field layers. The field layers consist of a sand-Portland cement blends with varying dry unit weights (18.5 kN/m3 and 19.5 kN/m3) and cement contents (3%, 5%, and 7%). These results are then compared with laboratory samples of similar characteristics. The findings reveal, for the first time, that the η/Civ index is a suitable parameter for assessing both durability and strength of compacted sand-Portland cement layers in the field. Furthermore, the study highlights that durability tests are less sensitive to sample extraction procedures compared to unconfined compression tests. Consequently, there is a risk of inadequate representation of the true field performance of cemented-stabilized materials when using unconfined compression tests on small diameter core samples. Using chemical additives such as ordinary Portland cement is conventional for ground improvement purposes. Still, there are specific situations that require innovative solutions because the employment of traditional binders may lead to unpleasant issues. Organic polymers emerge as an option to deal with those drawbacks whilst promoting enhancements in the material's mechanical response. Thus, the present study uses polyester [poly(glycerol isophthalate)], whose main source of raw material is glycerol, an abundant by-product derived from biodiesel production, in the improvement of uniform quartzitic sand. Thence, a series of mechanical tests were carried out on compacted sand-polymer-cement blends to evaluate the effect of variables such as polymer content, amount of cement, and curing temperature through a central composite design scheme. This enables the assessment of first and second-order effects as well as the curvature of the evaluated responses. In general, the polymer addition has led to substantial enhancement in the material's response, particularly concerning the decrease in hydraulic conductivity. Replacing resource-intensive materials with less impactful alternatives, particularly industrial wastes, or by-products, has been a trend in several areas, including the design and construction of infrastructure projects such as roads and highways. This paper examines the use of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP—aged pavement containing asphalt and aggregates removed from existing roads) combined with Carbide Lime (CL—a by-product of acetylene gas manufacture) and Ground Glass (GG—a waste containing amorphous silica) as a blend for the road base layer. The pozzolanic reactions between calcium ions in CL and the amorphous silica in GG create cementitious compounds that were found to enhance splitting tensile strength (qt), maximum shear modulus (Gmax), resilient modulus, and dynamic modulus (E*) of RAP–GG–CL blends. The porosity/binder index provided an appropriate parameter for modelling all these mechanical properties. A unique equation between the dynamic modulus and the porosity/binder index was obtained for the frequencies and temperatures studied. Generally, mixtures with lower porosity/binder index provided higher strength and stiffness due to their lower void volumes and higher solid particles in their micro-architectural structure. Finally, an environmental analysis was carried out, showing that the benefits of this fully recycled alternative to gravel (traditionally used for base layers) can be further enhanced by creating dosages best suited to different scenarios. Modern financial markets produce massive datasets that need to be analysed using new modelling techniques like those from (deep) Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. The common goal of these techniques is to forecast the behaviour of the market, which can be translated into various classification tasks, such as, for instance, predicting the likelihood of companies' bankruptcy or in fraud detection systems. However, it is often the case that real-world financial data are unbalanced, meaning that the classes' distribution is not equally represented in such datasets. This gives the main issue since any Machine Learning model is trained according to the majority class mainly, leading to inaccurate predictions. In this paper, we explore different data augmentation techniques to deal with very unbalanced financial data. We consider a number of publicly available datasets, then apply state-of-the-art augmentation strategies to them, and finally evaluate the results for several Machine Learning models trained on the sampled data. The performance of the various approaches is evaluated according to their accuracy, micro, and macro F1 score, and finally by analyzing the precision and recall over the minority class. We show that a consistent and accurate improvement is achieved when data augmentation is employed. The obtained classification results look promising and indicate the efficiency of augmentation strategies on financial tasks. On the basis of these results, we present an approach focused on classification tasks within the financial domain that takes a dataset as input, identifies what kind of augmentation technique to use, and then applies an ensemble of all the augmentation techniques of the identified type to the input dataset along with an ensemble of different methods to tackle the underlying classification. In the philosophy of mathematical practice, the aim is to understand the various aspects of this practice. Even though definitions are a central element of mathematical practice, the study of this aspect of mathematical practice is still in its infancy. In particular, there is little empirical evidence to substantiate claims about definitions in practice. In this article, we address this gap by reporting on an empirical investigation on how mathematicians create definitions and which roles and properties they attribute to them. On the basis of interviews with thirteen research mathematicians, we provide a broad range of relevant aspects of definitions. In particular, we address various roles of definitions and show that definitions are not just a product of mathematical factors, but also of social and contingent factors. Furthermore, we provide concrete examples of how mathematicians interact and think about definition. This broad empirical basis with a variety of examples provides an optimal starting point for future investigations into definitions in mathematical practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As an atom-efficient strategy for the large-scale interconversion of olefins, heterogeneously catalysed olefin metathesis sees commercial applications in the petrochemical, polymer and speciality chemical industries1. Notably, the thermoneutral and highly selective cross-metathesis of ethylene and 2-butenes1 offers an appealing route for the on-purpose production of propylene to address the C3 shortfall caused by using shale gas as a feedstock in steam crackers2,3. However, key mechanistic details have remained ambiguous for decades, hindering process development and adversely affecting economic viability4 relative to other propylene production technologies2,5. Here, from rigorous kinetic measurements and spectroscopic studies of propylene metathesis over model and industrial WOx/SiO2 catalysts, we identify a hitherto unknown dynamic site renewal and decay cycle, mediated by proton transfers involving proximal Brønsted acidic OH groups, which operates concurrently with the classical Chauvin cycle. We show how this cycle can be manipulated using small quantities of promoter olefins to drastically increase steady-state propylene metathesis rates by up to 30-fold at 250 °C with negligible promoter consumption. The increase in activity and considerable reduction of operating temperature requirements were also observed on MoOx/SiO2 catalysts, showing that this strategy is possibly applicable to other reactions and can address major roadblocks associated with industrial metathesis processes.The authors identify a dynamic site renewal and decay cycle, mediated by proton transfers involving proximal Brønsted acidic OH groups, which operates concurrently with the Chauvin cycle and could address roadblocks associated with industrial metathesis processes. Aims: Several insulin delivery systems are available to control glycemia in patients with diabetes. Recently introduced devices feature connectivity enabling data transfer to smartphone applications to provide decision support and reduce errors in dosing and timing, while reducing the cognitive burden. Methods: We conducted an online survey in Italian patients with a self-reported diagnosis of diabetes to assess patient perceptions of insulin therapy management, and their impressions of connection-enabled insulin pens compared to standard insulin pens. The Morisky Medication Adherence Scale-8 was used to assess adherence to insulin therapy. Results: Among 223 respondents (108 with type 1 diabetes; 115 with type 2 diabetes), the most prominent unmet need was the necessity to overcome the cognitive burden of care associated with measuring, calculating, timing, and recording therapy. Only 25% of respondents had high adherence; 28% had low adherence. Conclusions: When asked to compare the attributes of a non-connected insulin pen with those of a new connected device, 71% of patients rated the new proposal "very useful". The goal of the paper is to elaborate an empirical overview of green technological development in European regions. This is a timely pursuit considering the ambitious commitments stipulated in the recent European Green Deal to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. Our analysis is organised in three steps. First, we map the geographical distribution of innovative activities in Europe and profile regions in terms of technological capabilities. Second, we elaborate a metric to identify regions' green innovation potential. Third, we check whether possessing a comparative advantage in specific, green and non-green, technological domains is associated with a region's capacity to develop green technologies. In engineering practice, it is usual to adopt pile groups as a foundation solution, whereby the block only distributes the loads from the superstructure to the piles. However, the blocks generally have contact with the ground and this portion of strength can be significant. Thus, the concept of piled footing arises. These foundations are composed of deep and shallow foundation elements and can promote technical and economic advantages over a traditional design. The efficiency of the shallow element contact depends on the type of soil. The residual soil weakly cemented existing in Brazil and other tropical countries has peculiar characteristics and is little addressed by traditional geotechnics. Thus, the paper aims to study piled footing foundations supported in this soil, in comparison with traditional pile groups. Seven full-scale load tests were carried out on different foundations executed on the experimental site. Also, simplified methods were applied (PDR—Poulos, Davis & Randolph and Mandolini et al.) to predict the piled footings behavior. The results showed that the contribution of the footing contact reduced the settlements and increased load capacity (reaching 148% of failure load improvement), providing a significant reduction in foundation cost in relation to traditional design in pile groups. It was also found that the bearing capacity for the piled footing is on average 85% of the sum of the bearing capacities of the individual elements (pile group + footing). This paper aims to complement current knowledge about performance of deep foundations in residual soils by presenting the results of a new experimental field-testing program on steel driven piles (with hollow circular and square cross sections) subjected to cyclic lateral loading at controlled displacement amplitudes. The results show that the maximum mobilized lateral load (at the maximum applied displacement) decreases with the number of cycles to reach a constant final value maintained up to 100 cycles. The amount of load degradation is dependent on the displacement amplitude of the cyclic loading. It is also observed that the ultimate lateral load pile capacity is unaffected (if not slightly enhanced) by the application of cyclic loading. Combined 3-D finite element and pile test analysis revealed that the progressive degradation of maximum mobilized cyclic loading can be related to the progressive plastic displacement accumulation and not only to cement bonding degradation of the residual soil. Background and aims: The ever-increasing demand of fresh water from irrigated agriculture and the water scarcity condition that characterizes the Mediterranean region, encourages the adoption of efficient water saving strategies. In this study, the electrical resistivity imaging (ERI) technique was applied for characterizing the mass exchange mechanisms affecting the continuous soil-plant system of heterogeneous micro-irrigated orchards. Methods: Time-lapse ERI surveys were carried out in a multi-variety and mixed-age orange orchard located in Eastern Sicily (insular Italy). The time-lapse ERI monitoring was coupled with the use of independent soil water content (SWC) measurements. Results and conclusions: A clear relationship between the soil electrical resistivity (ER) and the measured SWC changes was identified in the soil under the mixed-age orchard (with an overall coefficient of determination value of 0.63). Specifically, this study highlights the dependency of SWC dynamics as function of tree age. Overall, an increase in ER was obtained in correspondence to the soil domain where the younger trees were located (< = 3 years). This behaviour was inferred to result from the higher soil evaporation process active at these locations, due to less vegetation cover of the younger trees and, consequently to their lesser root extension in comparison to the mature trees (> = 8 years). On the other hand, in mature trees, characterized by denser root biomass, there were more evident decreasing patterns of ER (i.e., greater changes in SWC), due to greater transpiration rates that caused lower initial SWC under these conditions in comparison to the younger trees. Using conformal field theory and localization tecniques we study the propagation of scalar waves in gravity backgrounds described by Schrödinger like equations with Fuchsian singularities. Exact formulae for the connection matrices relating the asymptotic behaviour of the wave functions near the singularities are obtained in terms of braiding and fusion rules of the CFT. The results are applied to the study of quasi normal modes, absorption cross sections, amplification factors, echoes and tidal responses of black holes (BH) and exotic compact objects (ECO) in four and five dimensions. Purpose: To determine whether reversal of DWI lesions (DWIr) on the DWI-ASPECTS (diffusion weighted imaging Alberta Stroke Program CT Score) template should serve as a predictor of 90-day clinical outcome in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients with pretreatment diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI)-ASPECTS 0–5 treated with thrombectomy, and to determine its predictors in current practice. Methods: We analyzed data of all consecutive patients included in the prospective multicenter national Endovascular Treatment in Ischemic Stroke Registry between 1 January 2015 and 31 December 2020 with a premorbid mRS ≤ 2, who presented with a pretreatment DWI-ASPECTS 0–5 score, underwent thrombectomy and had an available 24 h post-interventional MRI follow-up. Multivariable analyses were performed to evaluate the clinical impact of DWIr on early neurological improvement (ENI), 3‑month modified Rankin scale (mRS) score distribution (shift analysis) and to define independent predictors of DWIr. Results: Early neurological improvement was detected in 82/211 (41.7%) of patients while 3‑month functional independence was achieved by 75 (35.5%) patients. The DWI reversal (39/211, 18.9%) resulted an independent predictor of both ENI (aOR 3.6, 95% CI 1.2–7.7; p 0.018) and 3‑month clinical outcome (aOR for mRS shift: 2.2, 95% CI 1–4.6; p 0.030). Only successful recanalization (mTICI 2c–3) independently predicted DWIr in the studied population (aOR 3.3, 95% CI 1.3–7.9; p 0.009). Conclusion: The DWI reversal occurs in a non-negligible proportion of DWI-ASPECTS 0–5 patients subjected to thrombectomy and significantly influences clinical outcome. Supramolecular chemistry is one of the current strategies for producing advanced materials. With the aim to develop new Thin-Films with antibacterial activity, we embedded an amphiphilic choline-calix[4]arene possessing antibacterial properties in polymeric Thin-Films based on polyether-co-amide matrix (Pebax®2533). The loading of the calix[4]arene derivative in the film was performed by solution casting. The amount of calixarene additive in the films was in the range of 0.5–5 wt%. The self-supported Thin-Films were characterized by investigating phase miscibility, morphology, spectral properties, and gas transport. The release of the calixarene derivative from the films was studied in a biomimetic medium as PBS (10 mM, pH 7.4). The presence of the additive did not affect the thermal stability of the copolymer, whereas it induced an increase in crystallinity, wettability, and gas permeability of the blend films according to its concentration. The antibacterial activity of the films was evaluated in vitro against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus strains, representative of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. The developed films displayed antibacterial activity against both strains. In particular, Pebax® − 5 wt% Chol-Calix caused within 10 h a reduction in E. coli and S. aureus of 2.57 and 2 log CFU/mL, respectively. The potential toxicity of the films was also tested on mouse embryonic fibroblasts NIH/3T3. Background and aim: Benefits of oral anticoagulants (OAC) in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients with moderate-to-high risk of stroke are independent of AF pattern. We evaluated whether AF clinical subtype influenced OAC use in a representative sample of the Italian older population. Methods: A cross-sectional examination of all subjects aged 65 + years from three general practices in northern, central, and southern Italy started in 2016. A double-screening procedure was followed by clinical and ECG confirmation. Patients were categorized as having paroxysmal, persistent, or permanent AF. OAC use was evaluated in confirmed AF patients. Results: The sample included 6016 subjects. Excluding 235 non-eligible, participation was 78.3%, which left 4528 participants (mean age 74.5 ± 6.8 years, 47.2% men). Overall, 319 AF cases were identified: 43.0% had paroxysmal, 21.3% persistent, and 35.7% permanent AF. Frequency of OAC therapy was 91.2% in permanent, 85.3% in persistent, and only 43.0% in paroxysmal AF (P < 0.001). In multivariate analysis, controlled for baseline variables and risk scales, persistent and permanent AF were associated with a significant increase in the likelihood of receiving OAC compared with paroxysmal AF (P < 0.001). This was confirmed for permanent AF also in multivariate analyses considering separately vitamin K antagonists or direct-acting oral anticoagulants (OR, 4.37, 95% CI, 2.43–7.85; and 1.92, 95% CI, 1.07–3.42, respectively) and for persistent AF and direct-acting oral anticoagulants (OR, 4.33, 95% CI, 2.30–8.15). Conclusions: In a population-based survey, AF pattern was an independent predictor of OAC treatment. Paroxysmal AF is still perceived as carrying a lower risk of vascular events. Purpose: The management of patients with advanced/metastatic adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is challenging, EDP-M (etoposide, doxorubicin, cisplatin combined with mitotane) is the standard regimen. However, it is quite toxic, so an adequate supportive therapy is crucial to reduce as much as possible the side effects and maintain the dose intensity of cytotoxic agents. Methods: We describe the main side effects of the EDP-M scheme and the best way to manage them based on the experience of the Medical Oncology Unit of the Spedali Civili of Brescia. We also deal with the administration of EDP-M in specific frail patients, such as those with huge disease extent and poor performance status (PS) and those with mild renal insufficiency. Results: In patients with hormone secreting ACC the rapid control of Cushing syndrome using adrenal steroidogenesis inhibitors such as metyrapone or osilodrostat is mandatory before starting EDP-M. Primary prophylaxis of neutropenia with Granulocyte-Colony Stimulating Factors is crucial and should be introduced at the first chemotherapy cycle. Possible mitotane induced hypoadrenalism should be always considered in case of persistent nausea and vomiting and asthenia in the interval between one cycle to another. In case of poor PS. A 24 h continuous infusion schedule of cisplatin could be an initial option in patients with poor PS as well as to reduce the risk of nefrotoxocity in patients with mild renal impairment. Conclusion: A careful and accurate supportive care is essential to mitigate EDP-M side effects as much as possible and avoid that, due to toxicity, patients have to reduce doses and or postpone cytotoxic treatment with a negative impact on efficacy of this chemotherapy regimen. Disposal of mine tailings can cause negative environmental effects by releasing contaminants to surface and underground water. Alkali activation is a promising technique for immobilizing metals in stabilization/solidification of these wastes. This study evaluates the leaching behavior of cemented bauxite tailings (BT) submitted to weathering conditions. The alkali-activated binder was composed of sugar cane bagasse ash, carbide lime, and sodium hydroxide solution. Comparisons of the durability and leaching behavior of BT stabilized with alkali-activated binder and high initial strength Portland cement were performed. The durability results for alkali-activated were similar to the Portland cement, showing an average difference of 16%. Portland cement showed favorable results in the encapsulation of heavy metals like Cd and Hg, while the alkali-activated cement on Al, Cr, and Se. For Ba, Fe, Mn, and Zn immobilization, both types of cement presented an equal performance.
