Low birth weight for one's gestational age is associated with higher rates of child psychopathology, however, most studies assess psychopathology cross-sectionally. The effect of such foetal growth restriction appears to be strongest for attention problems in childhood, although adult studies have found associations with a range of outcomes, from depression to psychosis. We explore how associations between foetal growth and psychopathology change across age, and whether they vary by sex. We used a large nationally representative cohort of children from Ireland (N ~ 8000). Parents completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) at 3 time points (age 9, 13 and 17). Outcomes included a total problems scale and subscales measuring attention/hyperactivity, peer, conduct and emotional problems. Foetal growth had significant associations with all problem scales, even after controlling for sex, socioeconomic factors and parental mental health. The magnitude of these effects was small but relatively stable across ages 9–17. In males, foetal growth had the strongest associations with attention/hyperactivity and peer problems, whereas females showed more widespread associations with all four subscales. There was a trend for the association between foetal growth and emotional problems to increase with advancing age, approaching the borderline-abnormal threshold by age 17. Reduced foetal growth predicted persistently higher scores on all measured aspects of child and adolescent psychopathology. Associations with child attention/hyperactivity may generalize to a wider array of adult psychopathologies via adolescent-onset emotional problems. The association between restricted fetal growth and symptoms of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in childhood is well-replicated and robust. However, fetal growth is determined by many prenatal factors and associations with mental health may be confounded by familial and social context. In this study, we sought to quantify the relative contributions of prenatal factors and familial confounds to the association between fetal growth and ADHD symptoms. Two independent cohorts were analyzed, the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study (ABCD; United States) and the Growing Up in Ireland (GUI) study. ADHD symptoms were measured by the Child Behavior Checklist (ABCD) and the Strengths & Difficulties questionnaire (GUI) at age 9–10. Using sequential regression models, we assessed the change-in-association between fetal growth and ADHD symptoms after controlling for sex, familial factors (socioeconomic/demographic factors & family psychiatric history) and prenatal factors (pregnancy complications & maternal substance-use during pregnancy). Converging findings from cohorts suggested that over a quarter of the association between fetal growth and ADHD symptoms is attributable to familial confounds. The degree to which the association was explained by prenatal factors differed by cohort—pregnancy complications explained a larger proportion of the effect in ABCD (7.9%) than GUI (2.7%), and maternal substance-use explained a larger proportion of the effect in GUI (22.7%) compared to ABCD (4.8%). Different explanations of the fetal growth-ADHD association across cohorts suggests cohort-specific, and potentially nationally-specific, risk factors for fetal growth and related neurodevelopmental outcomes. The evidence suggests early prevention of ADHD in Ireland should focus on minimizing maternal smoking during pregnancy. The COVID-19 pandemic initially placed college and university instruction into an emergency remote mode. The subsequent periods of the pandemic presented new challenges. This paper examines changes in faculty work lives in the immediate aftermath of the onset of the pandemic and reports on results from surveys of faculty at three selective liberal arts colleges in 2020 and again in 2021. Specifically, we investigate faculty experiences with work strain. Drawing on job demands-resources theory, we develop an analytic framework that examines the effects of status resources (gender, race, and tenure), work domain demands and resources (teaching and research resources, student demands, emotional labor demands, and scholarship demands), and home and family demands (caregiving). Our findings suggest that work strain was elevated in both periods and that only tenure among the status resources predicted less strain. We show that the sources of elevated strain shifted from teaching and research demands in the initial phase of the pandemic to emotional labor demands during the first full academic year of it. Many studies have shown low birth weight is associated with psychopathology later in life, particularly attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The association is well-replicated, independent from a variety of potential familial confounds, and follows a dose–response curve (decreasing birth weight linked with increasing odds of disorder). However, the specificity of the association to attention problems is called into question by the extent of comorbidity in ADHD, and recent findings that the association is stronger for autism than ADHD. We test the relative dose–response strength of birth weight on multiple aspects of behavior to explore specificity of the effect to attention problems. We also test recent suggestions that the association between birth weight and attention problems is driven by males. Our sample consisted of 9,076 children aged 9–10 from the United States (Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study). Outcomes included 9 problem-scales and the total problems scale from the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). Attention problems were the most strongly associated with birth weight after controlling for gestational age, potential familial confounds, and multiple testing, supporting the outcome-specificity of this association. Contrary to recent registry-based findings, an association between birth weight and an autism scale was not observed. Sex moderated the effect of birth weight on total problems, attention problems and aggressive behavior such that these inverse associations were strongly driven by males. The COVID-19 pandemic placed new teaching demands upon faculty that may have exacerbated existing race and gender disparities in the amount of emotional labor they perform. The present study surveyed 182 full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty from three small private liberal arts colleges to examine the effect of social and professional statuses on emotional labor (i.e., managing the expression of emotions to meet job requirements) during the emergency switch to remote instruction in spring 2020. Ordinary least squares (OLS) regression revealed that white cisgender men performed less emotional labor than Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) cisgender men, BIPOC cisgender women, and white cisgender women and gender non-conforming (GNC) faculty. Student demands for special favors fully mediated the relationship between intersectional race and gender identity and self-directed emotional labor and partially mediated its relationship with student-directed emotional labor. We conclude that the status shield afforded white cisgender men by their race and gender protected them from student demands that would have required them to engage in as much emotional labor as faculty with other intersectional race and gender identities during the pandemic. Cannabis use confers a two-fold increase in risk for psychosis, with adolescent use conferring an even greater risk. A high-low activity polymorphism in catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT), a gene encoding the COMT enzyme involved in dopamine clearance in the brain, may interact with adolescent cannabis exposure to increase risk for schizophrenia. The impact of such an interaction on central neurotransmitter pathways implicated in schizophrenia is unknown. Male mice with knockout of the COMT gene were treated chronically with delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) during adolescence (postnatal day 32-52). We measured the size and density of GABAergic cells and the protein expression of cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1R) in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and hippocampus (HPC) in knockout mice relative to heterozygous mutants and wild-type controls. Size and density of dopaminergic neurons was also assessed in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) across the genotypes. COMT genotype × THC treatment interactions were observed for: (1) dopaminergic cell size in the VTA, (2) CB1R protein expression in the HPC, and (3) parvalbumin (PV) cell size in the PFC. No effects of adolescent THC treatment were observed for PV and dopaminergic cell density across the COMT genotypes. COMT genotype modulates the effects of chronic THC administration during adolescence on indices of neurotransmitter function in the brain. A high-low activity catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) polymorphism may modulate the effects of adolescent Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) exposure on the risk for adult psychosis. Mice with knockout of the COMT gene were treated chronically with THC (4.0 and 8.0 mg/kg over 20 days) during either adolescence (postnatal days (PDs) 32-52) or adulthood (PDs 70-90). The effects of THC exposure were then assessed in adulthood across behavioral phenotypes relevant for psychosis: exploratory activity, spatial working memory (spontaneous and delayed alternation), object recognition memory, social interaction (sociability and social novelty preference), and anxiety (elevated plus maze). Adolescent THC administration induced a larger increase in exploratory activity, greater impairment in spatial working memory, and a stronger anti-anxiety effect in COMT knockouts than in wild types, primarily among males. No such effects of selective adolescent THC administration were evident for other behaviors. Both object recognition memory and social novelty preference were disrupted by either adolescent or adult THC administration, independent of genotype. The COMT genotype exerts specific modulation of responsivity to chronic THC administration during adolescence in terms of exploratory activity, spatial working memory, and anxiety. These findings illuminate the interaction between genes and adverse environmental exposures over a particular stage of development in the expression of the psychosis phenotype. This article discusses the effect of time constraints faced by dual-career families on their religious lives. The authors consider two possible explanations for variations in religious observance by families in the U.S. Increases in religious participation are explained by the hypothesis that religious observance is a form of conspicuous consumption for dual-income families attempting to assert their social status. Declines in religious observance are explained by the possibility that time constraints will limit religious activities. The authors analyze data from the American Time Use Survey for 2003-2005. The authors did not find a trend in religious activity that verified either hypothesis consistently.

The specific activity of cathepsin B-like, cathepsin D-like, and leucine aminopeptidase enzymes was measured in dormant, aging, and germinating spores of wild-type and mutant Dictyostelium discoideum. The activity of leucine aminopeptidase was relatively constant during spore aging and spore germination. The level of cathepsin D-like activity was highest in young dormant spores but decreased during germination or aging. The level of cathepsin B-like activity remained constant in wild-type spores which were aged for 13 days. The dormant spores of spontaneous germination mutants initially contained low levels of cathepsin B-like activity which increased during aging. Thus, there was no correlation between the level of endogenous cathepsin B activity and the ability to be autoactivated or heat-activated. The level of cathepsin B-like activity does not have a role in the generation of energy for the swelling stage of germination. Finally, the combined level of endogenous and exogenous cathepsin B activity increased more than 20-fold during the emergence of myxamoebae suggesting that the enzyme(s) may play a role at this development stage of germination. Mutant spores of Dictyostelium discoideum, strain SG-10, differ from wild type spores in their ability to spontaneously germinate, to be activated with 5% dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO), and to be deactivated with 0.2 M sucrose. Both heat-activated wild type and mutant spores began to swell after a lag of 60-75 min at ambient temperature. Suspension of heat activated spores in 5% DMSO resulted in blockage of spore swelling and a concomitant severe inhibition of respiration; removal of 5% DMSO allowed resumption of respiration and the spores began to swell after a lag of only 15 min. It was concluded that 5% DMSO allowed the early reactions ( M) to proceed but blocked the later reactions ( R) of post-activation lag. Treatment of one day old spores with 20% DMSO solution for 30-120 min quantitatively activated the population. The post-activation lag time was directly dependent on the time of 20% DMSO treatment. Spores activated with 20% DMSO treatment could be deactivated by incubation at 0°C; the spores most quickly deactivated at 0°C were those within 10 min of swelling. Mitochondrial transport inhibitors such as azide and cyanide caused deactivation in an analogous manner. It is hypothesized that spores proceed to the second portion of the lag phase called ( R) before the environment determines if dormancy is reimposed or if germination will proceed. The sensitive strain (SG-10) showed a greater degree of 'damage' than the wild type after supraoptimal treatment with 40% DMSO. The spores became more resistant with age to the 'damaging' action of 40% DMSO. All the observed effects of DMSO treatment were compatible with our multistate model of activation which suggests that the early portion of the lag phase ( M) may involve a relative uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation while the later portion ( R) may require tight coupling. The trehalase I of Dictyostelium discoideum exhibits characteristics of a typical lysosomal enzyme. The enzyme is glycosylated and carries a number of negatively charged components which cause it to be a very acidic protein. Strain M31, bears a recessive mutation mod A which alters the post-translational modification of several lysosomal enzymes including trehalase. A direct consequence of this mutation is a reduction of the negatively charged components on lysosomal enzymes. This reduction in negativity is observed in the altered chromatographic and electrophoretic behaviour of M31 trehalase. Trehalase I is synthesized during spore germination. Tunicamycin prevents the formation of recoverable trehalase from germinating spores but does not interfere with the germination process. These results indicate that the trehalase I synthesized during spore germination is not required for the successful completion of spore germination. Minor modification in the glycosylation, as seen in strain M31, does not affect the enzymatic activity. However, when glycosylation is greatly reduced by tunicamycin the enzyme is inactive. SG mutant and aged wild type spores of the cellular slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum germinate in the absence of an externally applied activation treatment. This type of germination is referred to as autoactivation. During the swelling stage of autoactivation, spores release a factor, the autoactivator, capable of stimulating germination in subsequent spore populations. The autoactivator was not present in the dormant spore, but it or a precursor was produced internally during the first hour of autoactivation. This production was sensitive to moderately high temperatures (+31° C) and was completely destroyed by heat activation (45° C for 30 min). Internal production of the autoactivator was not sensitive to protein synthesis inhibitors. However, the release of the activator from the spore appeared to be regulated by protein synthesis. Internal autoactivator was also produced in the aged wild type strain during the postautoactivation lag phase. The activator could not be directly isolated from within the germinating spore. Its activity on the rest of the spore population was dependent upon its release from the germinating spore. Microcyst formation in Polysphondylium pallidum WS320 was accompanied by a decrease in intracellular cysteine proteinase activity measured with the peptide nitroanilides Z-Arg-Arg-Nan and Bz-Pro-Phe-Arg-Nan. Some activity was released into the buffer, and secretion of that towards Z-Arg-Arg-Nan continued until encystment occurred. Cells grown in association with Escherichia coli had an electrophoretic proteinase pattern different from cells grown axenically. Microcysts formed from the two cell populations also had distinct proteinase patterns; those from bacterially grown cells retained significant quantities of proteinase ppCP22, whereas those derived from axenic cells were devoid of detectable proteinases. No significant changes in cysteine proteinase activities were observed during microcyst germination, although some changes in activity occurred subsequent to emergence. The results indicate that there is not a close correlation between particular cysteine proteinases and specific stages of microcyst formation. An in vitro activation treatment, stimulatory to the regulatory cytoplasmic trehalase of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, had no effect on the lysosomal trehalase of Dictyostelium discoideum. Concentrations of cAMP that produced a 19 to 22-fold increase in trehalase activity in S. cerevisiae extracts did not stimulate trehalase activity in D. discoideum extracts.. cGMP and 5′-AMP were also not effective in activating the enzyme. Dictyostelium discoideum trehalase exhibits characteristics typical of nonregulatory trehalases, in agreement with its lysosomal localization. A majority of Dictyostelium discoideum spores were activated with guanidine hydrochloride and tetramethylurea treatments. Dimethylurea could be utilized over a wide range of concentrations to activate spores. The minimal concentration was 2 M dimethylurea employed for 45-60 min, and the maximal concentration was 5 M dimethylurea employed for 20-30 min. Moderate overstimulation with dimethylurea resulted in an increase in the postactivation lag time, while severe overstimulation caused lysis and death of the spores. Partial spore deplasmolysis was a requirement for activation with dimethylurea at 23,5°C; deplasmolysis and activation did not occur at 0°C. The time required to produce an LD was twice the time required for optimal activation when spores were treated with high concentrations of urea derivatives. A correlation was found for the hydrophobicity of the urea family of compounds and the molar concentration required for maximal activation with a 30-min treatment (2 M tetramethylurea, 5 M dimethylurea, and 8 M urea). Dikaryotic cells of S. commune synthesized polyols throughout the life cycle when grown on glucose, cellobiose, or cellulose. Basidiospores contained arabitol and mannitol which were depleted during germination. The mannitol content of the young germlings rose to normal levels within a day; arabitol accumulation remained depressed for 5 to 7 days and then returned to normal levels characteristic of vegetative cells. Individual homokaryons differed in their production of intracellular polyols, which, unlike germlings, remained constant with cultural age. Homokaryon (str. 699) produced low levels of arabitol but high levels of glycerol while another homokaryon (str. 845) was the reverse. Mixtures of these homokaryons as well as the dikaryon ( 699×845) produced arabitol and glycerol levels intermediate between the parent homokaryons. High concentrations of glucose did not change the nature of the polyols produced. Arabitol formation could be induced prematurely in germlings or elevated in the dikaryon by growth on acetate or ethanol. Both homokaryons responded to growth on acetate with elevated arabitol production; acetate induction of arabitol formation was repressed in all types of cells if glucose were added simultaneously with acetate. Maltose, cellobiose, and trehalose also stimulated arabitol formation in young germlings, suggesting that glucose repression was the cause of decreased arabitol formation in basidiospore germlings. There was no correlation between the formation of arabitol and the derepression of isocitrate lyase or change in specific activities of alkaline and acid phosphatase in germlings grown on various carbon sources. In the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae the PEP4 gene product, protease A, is responsible for activating all soluble vacuolar (lysosomal) enzymes. These vacuolar enzymes remain inactive in pep4 mutants. Vacuolar trehalase activity was diminished in such mutants as well.
