The reproductive process in Octopus maya was analyzed to establish the amount of reactive oxygen species that the embryos inherit from females, during yolk synthesis. At the same time, respiratory metabolism, ROS production, and the expression of some genes of the antioxidant system were monitored to understand the ability of embryos to neutralize maternal ROS and those produced during development. The results indicate that carbonylated proteins and peroxidized lipids (LPO) were transferred from females to the embryos, presumably derived from the metabolic processes carried out during yolk synthesis in the ovary. Along with ROS, females also transferred to embryos glutathione (GSH), a key element of the antioxidant defense system, thus facilitating the neutralization of inherited ROS and those produced during development. Embryos are capable of neutralizing ROS thanks to the early expression of genes such as catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), which give rise to the synthesis of enzymes when the circulatory system is activated. Also, it was observed that the levels of the routine metabolic rate of embryos are almost as high as those of the maximum activity metabolism, which leads, on the one hand, to the elevated production of ROS and suggests that, at this stage of the life cycle in octopuses, energy production is maximum and is physically limited by the biological properties inherent to the structure of embryonic life (oxygen transfer through the chorion, gill surface, pumping capacity, etc.). Due to its role in regulating vascularization, a high expression of HIf-1A during organogenesis suggests that circulatory system development has begun in this phase of embryo development. The results indicate that the routine metabolic rate and the ability of O. maya embryos to neutralize the ROS are probably the maximum possible. Under such circumstances, embryos cannot generate more energy to combat the free radicals produced by their metabolism, even when environmental factors such as high temperatures or contaminants could demand excess energy. Serpulids are the only polychaetes in which all species secrete calcium carbonate tubes. Some serpulid lineages, such as species in the genus Spirobranchus, possess a second kind of hard-calcified part—the operculum. The tube and operculum microstructure and mineralogy are highly variable among serpulid species, but this type of information is still scarce for some species. Furthermore, comparing the microstructure and mineralogical composition of species from warm and temperate waters helps to determine which are more susceptible to the effects of climate change. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine and describe the microstructure and mineralogical composition of the tubes and opercula of three Spirobranchus species from warm and temperate waters of the Mexican Pacific. The microstructures of the two hard structures were analyzed with a scanning microscope and complemented by X-ray computed nanotomography; the mineralogy was determined by X-ray diffractometry. The tubes of the three species had two layers—inner and outer—and five microstructures were found in the tubes. Numerous pores cover the operculum of all three species and have an irregularly oriented prismatic (IOP) structure. The tubes of the three species were bimineralic but had different percentages of calcite and aragonite, whereas the opercula were only composed of aragonite. Given the mineralogical characteristics of S. spinosus and because its distribution is only in temperate waters, we may conclude it could probably be the main species negatively affected according to the climate change scenarios predicted for the end of this century. It is well known that as part of their response to infectious agents such as viruses, microglia transition from a quiescent state to an activated state that includes proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory phases; this behavior has been described through in vitro studies. However, recent in vivo studies on the function of microglia have questioned the two-phase paradigm; therefore, a change in the frequency of in vitro studies is expected. A systematic review was carried out to identify the microglial cytokine profile against viral infection that has been further evaluated through in vitro studies (pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory), along with analysis of its publication frequency over the years. For this review, 531 articles published in the English language were collected from PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCO and ResearchGate. Only 27 papers met the inclusion criteria for this systematic review. In total, 19 cytokines were evaluated in these studies, most of which are proinflammatory; the most common are IL-6, followed by TNF-α and IL-1β. It should be pointed out that half of the studies were published between 2015 and 2022 (raw data available in ). In this review, we identified that evaluation of pro-inflammatory cytokines released by microglia against viral infections has been performed more frequently than that of anti-inflammatory cytokines; additionally, a higher frequency of evaluation of the response of microglia cells to viral infection through in vitro studies from 2015 and beyond was noted. Anthropogenic global warming generates profound metabolic alterations in marine ectotherm invertebrates capable of leading a wide range of these species to extinction. To evaluate the cross-generational effect of thermal stress on the cephalopod Octopus maya, groups of females were exposed at 24 and 30 °C until spawn. After, embryos of each female group were incubated at 24 and 30 °C allowing for evaluating the transgenerational effects on embryos exposed to high and low temperatures. We analyzed the morphology, oxygen consumption, antioxidant mechanisms, and oxidative stress indicators of the embryos. The results demonstrate that thermally stressed females produced smaller eggs with lower yolk content as observed in nonthermally stressed females. Also was observed that embryos from females acclimated at 30 °C had lower body weight and higher respiratory rates when compared with nonthermal stressed females. Embryos from females acclimated at 30 °C showed a collapse of the antioxidant defense system measured as lower both catalase activity and total glutathione concentrations. Additionally, glutathione-s transferase activity increased in embryos incubated at 30 °C and in females maintained at high temperatures in a clear deleterious and cross-generational effect of thermal stress on this octopus species. No changes were observed in the activity of B-esterases in octopus embryos linked with the thermal stress of females. Embryos from thermally stressed females had smaller sizes, less yolk, and higher metabolic rates. Additionally, a collapse in the antioxidant defense system was observed indicating they were unable to control the high load of ROS and oxidative damage, which was partially acquired by maternal inheritance. We study how the Chilean population's well-being responded to the strategy implemented by their health authorities, known as Dynamic Quarantine, to contain the spread of coronavirus in which municipalities periodically entered and exited lockdowns. This unique scheme, together with the population's socioeconomic heterogeneity, facilitates the estimation of changes in this well-being as differentiated by socioeconomic status. Using Google Trends to compute measures of well-being, we find strong evidence that socioeconomic status induces heterogeneity in these changes; thus, neglecting this heterogeneity may lead to misleading prescriptions for the public policy that addresses the psychological effects of lockdowns. Background: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a type of inflammatory arthritis that affects primarily the spine. There is a strong association of the HLA-B*27 allele with AS pathogenesis, but recent studies have demonstrated the participation of ERAP1 gene in the genetic susceptibility. The aim of this study was to determine whether HLA-B tag-single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and ERAP1-related genetic variations associated with AS have equal or similarly performance in patients´ screening compared to HLA-B*27 standard genotyping in Mexican population. Methods and Results: Genomic DNA from patients with AS and population-based controls from Mexico City was analyzed for five single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs): rs4349859, rs13202464, rs116488202, tagging HLA-B*27; and rs30187 and rs27044 in ERAP1 gene. TaqMan genotype assay method was used for SNPs genotyping. We found a significant association between AS and the heterozygote genotypes and minor alleles of the HLA-B*27 tag-SNPs, as well as for their haplotypes. With respect to ERAP1 polymorphisms, no significant associations were observed (p > 0.05). The sensitivity and specificity analysis showed values of 0.96 and 1.00 for the rs4349859 SNP, and 0.96 and 0.94 for the rs116488202 SNP, respectively, in detecting HLA-B*27 compared to the B27 test as the gold standard. Conclusions: HLA-B*27 tag-SNPs are associated with AS susceptibility; furthermore, the rs4349859 SNP by its own have an outstanding performance in detecting HLA-B*27 and therefore can be proposed as screening marker in the identification of HLA-B*27 in our population. Ketamine and MK-801 by blocking NMDA receptors may induce reinforcing effects as well as schizophrenia-like symptoms. Recent results showed that ketamine can also effectively reverse depressive signs in patients' refractory to standard therapies. This evidence clearly points to the need of characterization of effects of these NMDARs antagonists on relevant brain areas for mood disorders. The aim of the present study was to investigate the molecular changes occurring at glutamatergic synapses 24 h after ketamine or MK-801 treatment in the rat medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and hippocampus (Hipp). In particular, we analyzed the levels of the glutamate transporter-1 (GLT-1), NMDA receptors, AMPA receptors subunits, and related scaffolding proteins. In the homogenate, we found a general decrease of protein levels, whereas their changes in the post-synaptic density were more complex. In fact, ketamine in the mPFC decreased the level of GLT-1 and increased the level of GluN2B, GluA1, GluA2, and scaffolding proteins, likely indicating a pattern of enhanced excitability. On the other hand, MK-801 only induced sparse changes with apparently no correlation to functional modification. Differently from mPFC, in Hipp, both substances reduced or caused no changes of glutamate receptors and scaffolding proteins expression. Ketamine decreased NMDA receptors while increased AMPA receptors subunit ratios, an effect indicative of permissive metaplastic modulation; conversely, MK-801 only decreased the latter, possibly representing a blockade of further synaptic plasticity. Iliotibial band syndrome or friction syndrome is an overuse disorder of the lateral knee. It is commonly reported in athletes, such as runners and cyclists, and refers to pain related to physical activity. The diagnosis is based on clinical history and physical assessment. Imaging, including ultrasound, is mainly performed in recurrent or refractory cases. The purpose of this paper is to review the etiology, diagnosis, and therapy of iliotibial band syndrome with a focus on ultrasound imaging and ultrasound-guided treatment. Ultrasound findings include soft-tissue edematous swelling or discrete fluid collection, suggestive of bursitis, between the iliotibial band and the lateral femoral epicondyle. The thickening of the iliotibial band has been inconsistently reported. Treatment varies according to the disease phase and, in the acute phase, consists of rest, physical therapy, and anti-inflammatory medications. Articular cartilage is an avascular tissue with a structure that allows it to support and cushion the overload of the surfaces in contact. It maintains its metabolic functions due to the contribution of different signaling pathways. However, several factors play a role in its deterioration, allowing to the development of osteoarthritis (OA), and one of the major factors is genetic. Our goal was to identify gene–gene interactions (epistasis) between five signaling pathways involved in the articular cartilage metabolism as possible indicators of OA risk. We applied the Multifactor-Dimensionality Reduction (MDR) method to identify and characterize the epistasis between 115 SNPs located in 73 genes related to HIF-1α, Wnt/β-catenin, cartilage extracellular matrix metabolism, oxidative stress, and uric acid transporters. Ninety three patients diagnosed with primary knee OA and 150 healthy controls were included in the study. Genotyping was performed with the OpenArray system, the statistical analysis was carried out with the STATA software v14, and epistasis was analyzed with the MDR software v3.0.2. The MDR analysis revealed that the best interaction model was between polymorphisms rs17786744 of the STC1 gene and rs2615977 of the COL11A1 gene, with an entropy value of 4.44%, CVC 8/10, OR 5.60, 95% CI 3.27–9.59, p < 0.0001. Under this interaction model, we identified high and low risk genotypes involved in OA development. Our results suggest complex interactions between STC1 and COL11A1 genes that might have an impact on genetic susceptibility to develop OA. Further studies are required to confirm it. Dopamine (DA) neurons in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) are well-known components of the brain involved in reward-related behaviors and participate in the generation of new memories. Much attention has been focused to understand how DA neurons integrate a diversity of afferent signals with local excitatory and inhibitory influences regulated by somatodendritic release of dopamine. However, the mechanisms that actively forget rewarding information are still terra incognita. Using rodents in the conditioned place preference (CPP) behavioral task, we show that during acquisition D1-type DA receptors (D1R) in the VTA are crucial components of a neural circuit involving the hippocampus that induces active forgetting of cocaine-associated long-term memory, while VTA and nucleus accumbens (NAc) D1R are required for its formation. Inhibition of VTA D1R results in increased activation of VTA ERK1/2 and in prolonging memory storage of cocaine-place association in an ERK-dependent manner. Moreover, intra-VTA infusion of a specific D1 agonist induces forgetting of cocaine-associated consolidated memory. In contrast, D1R in the NAc shell, medial prefrontal cortex, or amygdala appear not to participate in the maintenance of cocaine-associated memory. Our present results suggest that at the moment of learning D1R-mediated neurotransmission in the VTA actively participates in at least two processes affecting the fate of appetitive memory: its consolidation involving NAc shell DA neurotransmission and its forgetting via DA activation of the hippocampus. The Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei is a euryhaline organism that copes with salinity fluctuations in the environment; therefore, its osmotic and ionic regulation abilities are vital. Osmoregulation may be controlled by the crustacean hyperglycemic hormone (CHH), a neuropeptide mainly expressed in the eyestalks. In L. vannamei, CHH-B1 and CHH-B2 are CHH isoforms isolated from the eyestalks whose expression is influenced by environmental salinity. It has been suggested that they are involved in the response to salinity stress. To clarify this, we investigated the effect of the recombinant peptides, rCHH-B1 and rCHH-B2, on the osmo-ionic regulation of shrimp acutely exposed to different salinity conditions (8, 26 and 45‰). Both rCHHs promoted differential effects on the osmoregulatory capacity (OC) and the ionoregulatory capacity (IC) for hemolymph Na+ and Cl− during iso-osmotic (26‰) and hyper-osmotic (45‰) transfers. These changes were linked to the changes observed in Na+/K+ ATPase and carbonic anhydrase gene expression in gills, especially under high salinity conditions, suggesting that the hormones may regulate the expression of these genes. Glucose and protein levels measured during acute salinity transfer suggest their roles as sources of metabolic energy for osmotic regulation or as organic osmolytes. These results taken together suggest that both the CHH-B1 and CHH-B2 peptides are important regulators of the physiological response of L. vannamei to acute salinity fluctuations. Herein we outline a plausible proteome, encoded by assuming a primeval RNY genetic code. We unveil the primeval phenotype by using only the RNA genotype; it means that we recovered the most ancestral proteome, mostly made of the 8 amino acids encoded by RNY triplets. By looking at those fragments, it is noticeable that they are positioned, not at catalytic sites, but in the cofactor binding sites. It implies that the stabilization of a molecule appeared long before its catalytic activity, and therefore the Ur-proteome comprised a set of proteins modules that corresponded to Cofactor Stabilizing Binding Sites (CSBSs), which we call the primitive bindome. With our method, we reconstructed the structures of the “first protein modules” that Sobolevsky and Trifonov (2006) found by using only RMSD. We also examine the probable cofactors that bound to them. Three new polymers, obtained by reacting thiophene or 3-alkylthiophenes as electron donors with aniline as acceptor in a donor-acceptor structure, were synthesized via oxidative polymerization using iron(III) chloride (FeCl). The final products were characterized utilizing conventional techniques such as IR, NMR, UV-Vis spectrometry, which enabled demonstrating that an increase of the aliphatic chain length causes significant solubility increase of the system, without modifying the conductivity. On the other hand, observed an important variation of the thermal stability of the polymer when medium-length aliphatic chains were inserted was observed; in contrast, the addition of a methyl group (short chain length) hardly affected the mentioned properties. Insect species can respond adaptively to stress temperature conditions including both thermal limits and reaction norms. In this study, we considered two populations of the whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius), in which adaptive differentiation was detected for tolerance to upper thermal limits. These two populations are found in two regions of Colombia with climatic differences: the Caribbean region with high environmental temperatures and the Southwest region with lower temperature regimens. We assessed the thermal responses to a range of 1 h heat shocks (37, 39, 41, 43 and 44 °C) performed below the thermal limits for this species. Thermal responses were measured using three life-history traits involved in fitness: survival, fecundity and viability of the offspring after heat shocks. Survival or fecundity as a response to heat shocks did not differ among populations; however, there were significantly different responses for viability between populations. The Southwestern population showed higher viability responses to low heat shocks than the Caribbean population. This relationship suggests a potential trade-off, which appears to be associated with climatic regions. In addition, these results suggest that adaptation under thermal limits does not necessarily involve similar responses throughout the reaction norm. A new series of polymers obtained from 3′-alkyl-terthiophene monomers have been electropolymerized aimed at using them as raw materials for the development of electronic devices, e.g., solar cell and organic light-emitting diodes, among others. The polymers were characterized by infrared and UV-Vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. Cyclic voltammetry results revealed that during polymerization both terthiophene system and substituent groups are oxidized, but these processes are reversible. In the present work a series of β-substituted thiophenes have been synthesized and their electrochemical behavior studied. The products obtained by electro-oxidation are highly dependent on the substituent, affording sometimes conducting polymers, insulating layers or soluble species. This behavior has been ascribed to specific electronic and/or steric factors. Theoretical calculations at the density functional theory level confirm the experimental findings and assess the use of reactivity descriptors for modeling complex chemical systems with specific polymerization patterns. In particular, the analysis of the polymerization sites of terthiophene derivatives using the dual descriptor for chemical reactivity and selectivity allows one to predict the specific sites able for reaction and explains correctly the observed polymerization pattern. ging is characterized by decline in metabolic function and insulin resistance, and both seem to be in the basis of neurodegenerative diseases and cognitive dysfunction. Estrogens prevent age-related changes, and phytoestrogens influence learning and memory. Our hypothesis was that estradiol and genistein, using rapid-action mechanisms, are able to modify insulin sensitivity, process of learning, and spatial memory. Young and aged ovariectomized rats received acute treatment with estradiol or genistein. Aged animals were more insulin-resistant than young. In each age, estradiol and genistein-treated animals were less insulin-resistant than the others, except in the case of young animals treated with high doses of genistein. In aged rats, no differences between groups were found in spatial memory test, showing a poor performance in the water maze task. However, young females treated with estradiol or high doses of genistein performed well in spatial memory task like the control group. Only rats treated with high doses of genistein showed an optimal spatial memory similar to the control group. Conversely, acute treatment with high doses of phytoestrogens improved spatial memory consolidation only in young rats, supporting the critical period hypothesis for the beneficial effects of estrogens on memory. Therefore, genistein treatment seems to be suitable treatment in aged rats in order to prevent insulin resistance but not memory decline associated with aging. Acute genistein treatment is not effective to restore insulin resistance associated to the early loss of ovarian function, although it can be useful to improve memory deficits in this condition. Krüppel-like transcription factors (KLFs) represent one of the most diverse set of regulators in vertebrate organisms. KLF family members are involved in cell proliferation and differentiation control in normal as well as in pathological situations. Here, we demonstrate that KLF6 behaves as a functional antagonist of the c-Jun proto-oncoprotein. Thus, KLF6 overexpression downregulated c-Jun-dependent transcription and a physical interaction between c-Jun and KLF6 was detected. Moreover, cell proliferation induced by c-Jun was significantly decreased by KLF6. The inhibition of c-Jun functions correlates directly with c-Jun protein degradation induced by KLF6. We also show that all KLF6 effects on c-Jun were largely dependent on phorbol ester (TPA/ionomycin) extracellular stimulation, which enhanced KLF6 nuclear translocation and transcriptional activity and modified its phosphorylation status. The aim of this work was the evaluation, in cirrhotic patients with noninfected ascites and with spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP), of serum and ascitic fluid levels of proinflammatory cytokines [interleukin (IL) 1-beta, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), and IL6] and antiinflammatory compounds [IL10, soluble IL-1 receptor antagonist (sIL-1Ra), soluble receptors of TNF p55 and p75 (sTNFR55 and sTNFR75), and soluble receptor of IL6 (sIL6R)], as well as their relationship with the outcome of the infection in those with SBP. These molecules were assayed by ELISA in noninfected cirrhotic controls (n = 15), patients with SBP (n = 32), and healthy controls (n = 20). Serum levels of IL6 and of the majority of antiinflammatory mediators, sIL1Ra, sTNFR75, and sIL6R, were higher in control cirrhotic patients compared to healthy subjects. SBP was associated with significantly elevated ascitic fluid levels of every one of the proinflammatory cytokines compared to those in cirrhotic controls. Also, serum levels of IL10 and both TNF receptors and ascitic fluid levels of sIL1Ra and sTNFR55 were higher in patients with SBP compared to cirrhotic controls. Ascitic fluid levels of proinflammatory cytokines decreased rapidly after resolution of the infection; however, nonsignificant changes were detected in ascitic fluid concentrations of antiinflammatory molecules. Thus, elevated levels of antiinflammatory compounds both in noninfected cirrhotic patients and in patients with SBP suggest a regulatory control of the inflammatory process by these molecules in liver cirrhosis patients. The effect of 96 h exposure to sublethal cadmium concentrations on oxygen consumption rate (VO2 mg h-1) and oxygen extraction efficiency (OEE′ %) was determined in juvenile Ctenopharyngodon idella acclimated to 26, 29 and 32 °C for at least two weeks. The relationships among the physiological rates (VO2 and OEE′, body weight and temperature, were fitted by second order polynomial models; the response surfaces generated allowed the evaluation of stress induced by the interaction of those variables. Both VO2 and OEE′ invariably increased as temperature increased. In small animals kept in 0.5 mg Cd L-1, the VO2 increase was compensated by a proportional increase in OEE′, whereas in larger fishes (>1 g) no compensatory response was observed. Both small and large fishes were unable to compensate for a higher VO2 when exposed to higher cadmium concentration. Copolymers containing vinyltrimethylsilane and vinyltrimethoxysilane with N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone at different compositions were synthesized and characterized. The reactivity ratios was estimated by using the classical Fineman-Ross and Kelen Tüdos linear fitting procedures. These parameters were also estimated through a computer program based on nonlinear minimization algorithm, starting from the r1 and r2 values obtained by the former procedures. The analysis of the results allow us to interpret the reactivity behaviour of these polymers in terms of the relative reactivity of the substiuents. The Simon task is used to study interference from irrelevant spatial information. Interference is manifested by longer reaction times when the required response -based on non-spatial features- is spatially incompatible with stimulus position. Interference is greater when incompatible trials are preceded by compatible trials (compatible-incompatible sequence) than when they are preceded by incompatible trials (incompatible-incompatible sequence). However, the relationships between spatial attention, interference and cognitive control have not been investigated. In the present study, we distinguished three experimental conditions according to sequential effects: same mappings (SM, compatible-compatible/incompatible-incompatible sequences: low interference), opposite mappings (OM, compatible-incompatible/incompatible-compatible sequences: high interference) and unrelated mappings (UM, central-compatible/central-incompatible sequences: intermediate interference). The negativity central contralateral (N2cc, a correlate of prevention of spatial response tendencies) was larger in OM than in SM, indicating greater cognitive control for greater interference. Furthermore, N2cc was larger in UM than in SM/OM, indicating lower neural efficiency for suppressing spatial tendencies of the response after central trials. Attentional processes (negativity posterior contralateral) were also delayed in UM relative to SM/OM, suggesting attentional facilitation by similar sets of attentional shifts in successive trials. Parvovirus B19 has been associated with different diseases. However, hepatic involvement has rarely been reported in adult patients with parvovirus B19 infection. Herein, we report two adult patients with hepatic dysfunction associated with acute parvovirus B19 infection. We believe that hepatic involvement in the setting of parvovirus B19 infection is more common than suspected, and that antibodies against this agent should be routinely measured in patients with hepatic dysfunction of unclear etiology.
