Abstract

Greenspaces are important for sustaining healthy urban environments and their human populations. Yet their capacity to support multiple ecosystem services simultaneously (multiservices) compared with nearby natural ecosystems remains virtually unknown. We conducted a global field survey in 56 urban areas to investigate the influence of urban greenspaces on 23 soil and plant attributes and compared them with nearby natural environments. We show that, in general, urban greenspaces and nearby natural areas support similar levels of soil multiservices, with only six of 23 attributes (available phosphorus, water holding capacity, water respiration, plant cover, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), and arachnid richness) significantly greater in greenspaces, and one (available ammonium) greater in natural areas. Further analyses showed that, although natural areas and urban greenspaces delivered a similar number of services at low (>25% threshold) and moderate (>50%) levels of functioning, natural systems supported significantly more functions at high (>75%) levels of functioning. Management practices (mowing) played an important role in explaining urban ecosystem services, but there were no effects of fertilisation or irrigation. Some services declined with increasing site size, for both greenspaces and natural areas. Our work highlights the fact that urban greenspaces are more similar to natural environments than previously reported and underscores the importance of managing urban greenspaces not only for their social and recreational values, but for supporting multiple ecosystem services on which soils and human well-being depends.

Abstract

Perennial plants create productive and biodiverse hotspots, known as fertile islands, beneath their canopies. These hotspots largely determine the structure and functioning of drylands worldwide. Despite their ubiquity, the factors controlling fertile islands under conditions of contrasting grazing by livestock, the most prevalent land use in drylands, remain virtually unknown. Here we evaluated the relative importance of grazing pressure and herbivore type, climate and plant functional traits on 24 soil physical and chemical attributes that represent proxies of key ecosystem services related to decomposition, soil fertility, and soil and water conservation. To do this, we conducted a standardized global survey of 288 plots at 88 sites in 25 countries worldwide. We show that aridity and plant traits are the major factors associated with the magnitude of plant effects on fertile islands in grazed drylands worldwide. Grazing pressure had little influence on the capacity of plants to support fertile islands. Taller and wider shrubs and grasses supported stronger island effects. Stable and functional soils tended to be linked to species-rich sites with taller plants. Together, our findings dispel the notion that grazing pressure or herbivore type are linked to the formation or intensification of fertile islands in drylands. Rather, our study suggests that changes in aridity, and processes that alter island identity and therefore plant traits, will have marked effects on how perennial plants support and maintain the functioning of drylands in a more arid and grazed world.

Abstract

Perennial plants create productive and biodiverse hotspots, known as fertile islands, beneath their canopies. These hotspots largely determine the structure and functioning of drylands worldwide. Despite their ubiquity, the factors controlling fertile islands under conditions of contrasting grazing by livestock, the most prevalent land use in drylands, remain virtually unknown. Here we evaluated the relative importance of grazing pressure and herbivore type, climate and plant functional traits on 24 soil physical and chemical attributes that represent proxies of key ecosystem services related to decomposition, soil fertility, and soil and water conservation. Abstract

Soil mosses are among the most widely distributed organisms on land. Experiments and observations suggest that they contribute to terrestrial soil biodiversity and function, yet their ecological contribution to soil has never been assessed globally under natural conditions. Here we conducted the most comprehensive global standardized field study to quantify how soil mosses influence 8 ecosystem services associated with 24 soil biodiversity and functional attributes across wide environmental gradients from all continents. We found that soil mosses are associated with greater carbon sequestration, pool sizes for key nutrients and organic matter decomposition rates but a lower proportion of soil-borne plant pathogens than unvegetated soils. Mosses are especially important for supporting multiple ecosystem services where vascular-plant cover is low. Globally, soil mosses potentially support 6.43 Gt more carbon in the soil layer than do bare soils. The amount of soil carbon associated with mosses is up to six times the annual global carbon emissions from any altered land use globally. The largest positive contribution of mosses to soils occurs under a high cover of mat and turf mosses, in less-productive ecosystems and on sandy and salty soils. Our results highlight the contribution of mosses to soil life and functions and the need to conserve these important organisms to support healthy soils.

Abstract

Context: Successful conservation requires a detailed understanding of critical habitats required to support different plant and animal populations. This is particularly important for rewilding programs where locally extinct species are often introduced into novel or reintroduced into areas that have been dramatically altered since they were extirpated. Objectives: Here, we explored changes in the volume of foraging pits of three engineers under different vegetation patch types and different landforms in an arid woodland in Australia based on field experiment. Methods: In this study, we examined the foraging habitat of three ecosystem engineers in the arid eastern Australia: a reintroduced mammal, the greater Bilby (Macrotis lagotis), the Small-beaked echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus) and a varanid, Gould's sand goanna (Varanus gouldii). The soil disturbing activities of these three animals has been shown to lead to marked and persistent changes in a range of critical ecosystem functions and services. We tracked the density, size and habitat location of 4102 foraging pits over 3 years, as the measure of habitat favourability and the time taken for these foraging pits to infill (pit longevity). Results: We found that foraging was non-random, and animals tended to forage more within shrub patches when accounting for the relative cover of shrubs. There were also some differences among different habitat patch types, with generally larger echidna foraging pits beneath shrubs and trees than in the open interspaces. Pit longevity also varied among animal and patch types, with no differences for bilby or goanna pits across all patches, but greater longevity of echidna foraging pits beneath shrubs. Larger pits tended to persist for longer, and those beneath trees were closer together. Conclusion: Our work shows that foraging, and therefore the ecological effects of these animals vary with the target engineer and the biophysical features of the rewilded habitat. Land restoration programs that aim to restore degraded habitat and ecosystem functions must be cognisant of the idiosyncratic effects of different reintroduced engineers, and the makeup of different patch elements within the target restoration area. Abstract

The livestock sector supports billions of people worldwide, yet when poorly managed, can have substantial negative effects on soils and ecosystem functions. Despite numerous studies and reviews of the effects of livestock activity on hydrological functions, a global synthesis of their effects on different biotic (vegetation, herbivore type) and abiotic (climate, soil, spatial scales) factors remains elusive. This makes it difficult to provide ecologically based advice on how best to manage grazing to minimise environmental damage and maximise hydrological functions. We used a global meta-analysis to examine the effects of livestock activity on hydrological inflows (infiltration, soil moisture), and outflows (runoff, sediment) using a dataset compiled from 3044 contrasts of grazed and ungrazed data from 129 publications between 1935 and 2020. Overall, we found that livestock activity increased sediment production (+ 52 ± 19.8%; mean ± 95% CI), reduced infiltration (− 25 ± 5.2%), but had no significant effect on either runoff (+ 27 ± 29.6%) or soil moisture (− 5 ± 5.9%). These impacts varied markedly among herbivore types and intensity, with greatest reductions in infiltration at high and low grazing contrasts, and more pronounced negative effects of grazing when sheep and cattle grazed together than either alone. The impact of livestock activity also varied with climatic region, soil texture, and the interaction between aridity and plant cover. Our study demonstrates the nuanced effects of livestock activity, with herbivore type and intensity, and environmental context modifying the hydrological outcomes. Abstract

Aims: Perennial plants play important roles in maintaining ecosystem functions by forming fertile islands beneath their canopies. Little is known about how the fertile island effect varies among different patch types and across climatic gradients, or what drives the strength of its effect. Methods: We assessed biotic (plants, biocrusts, litter) and abiotic (soil infiltrability, labile carbon, enzymes) fertile island effects beneath three plant patch types (tree, shrub and grass patches), and collected data on biotic (canopy size, grazing intensity) and abiotic (soil texture, electrical conductivity and pH) drivers at 150 sites along an extensive aridity gradient in eastern Australia. Results: The fertile island effect was generally apparent beneath trees, shrubs and grasses, with biotic (plants) and abiotic (soils) attributes regulated differently by plant canopy size. The fertile island effect intensified with increasing aridity, with the greatest litter and soil resources accumulated beneath trees. Conclusions: Our study provides evidence of the fertile island effect across the whole spectrum of the aridity gradient, with the effect depending on the target attribute and plant patch type. Forecasted increases in aridity will likely strengthen the fertile island effect beneath trees, reinforcing the importance of trees in drier environments to support critical ecosystem functions and services. Abstract

Aims: Biocrusts are globally distributed and important for sustaining critical ecosystem functions. Little is known about their continental drivers and how smaller-scale microsite differences might affect biocrusts along aridity gradients. This limits our ability to manage biocrusts effectively under drier climates. Methods: We collected data on biocrust cover, biotic (plants, litter, grazing intensity) and abiotic (soil texture, soil stability and integrity) attributes from four microsites (trees, shrubs, grasses, open) at 150 sites along an extensive aridity gradient in eastern Australia. Results: At the sub-continental scale, average biocrust cover increased with declining litter cover, and crust cover became more variable with increasing aridity. Biocrust cover was greatest in open microsites and least under trees, and differences were related to the effects of soil texture, vegetation and grazing intensity, which either increased or declined with increasing aridity. Conclusions: Our study reveals that biotic and abiotic effects on biocrust cover vary at different spatial scales along an aridity gradient. Predicted increases in aridity in eastern Australia will likely enhance biocrust cover whereas microsite-level effects are likely to be driven by land management actions such as vegetation removal and overgrazing. Abstract

Background: The Internet has become a leading source of health information accessed by patients and the general public. It is crucial that this information is reliable and accurate.Objectives: The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate the overall quality of online health information targeting patients and the general public.Methods: The systematic review is based on a pre-established protocol and is reported according to the PRISMA statement. Eleven databases and Internet searches were performed for relevant studies. Descriptive statistics were used to synthesize data. The NIH Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies was used to assess the methodological quality of the included studies.Results: Out of 3393 references, we included 153 cross-sectional studies evaluating 11,785 websites using 14 quality assessment tools. The quality level varied across scales. Using DISCERN, none of the websites received a category of excellent in quality, 37-79% were rated as good, and the rest were rated as poor quality. Only 18% of websites were HON Code certified. Quality varied by affiliation (governmental was higher than academic, which was higher than other media sources) and by health specialty (likely higher in internal medicine and anesthesiology).Conclusion: This comprehensive systematic review demonstrated suboptimal quality of online health information. Therefore, the Internet at the present time does not provide reliable health information for laypersons. Abstract

Purpose: We attempt to describe the cover and management (C) factor more comprehensively through the use of a simple and efficient method.Materials and methods: We measure the coverage of each vegetation layer and C factor for 152 sampled plots in the Ansai watershed. We propose four stratified coverage indices (green coverage (VG), total coverage (VT), probability coverage (VP), weight coverage (VW)), derive green and yellow vegetation indices from Landsat 8 OLI images to reflect green and residue cover, and construct and validate C factor estimation models from stratified coverage and remote sensing indices, respectively.Results and discussion: (1) VT and VP present C factor estimation advantages for grassland and shrub land. VW can better illustrate the C factor due to the relatively complete spatial structuring of woodland and orchard land. For cropland, four stratified coverage indices present the same estimation capacities for the C factor. Except for cropland and grassland, the estimation capabilities of VG are relatively low because the residue layer is ignored. (2) The C factor is more sensitive to yellow vegetation indices, which indicates that senescent fractional cover and litter are important and cannot be ignored. The linear and non-linear models can explain 56.6 and 61.8% of C factor variation, respectively, and the linear model is more accurate than the non-linear model. (3) Compared to traditional indices (projective coverage and single remote sensing indices), stratified coverage indices and a combination of several remote sensing indices can estimate the C factor more effectively.Conclusions: At the field scale, the C value estimation model can be selected according to the land-use type. Two representative small watersheds were selected for field experiments in each vegetation zone, each watershed contains artificial forestlands (Robinia pseudoacacia and Caragana korshinskii) and natural grasslands (i.e., areas that underwent natural recovery after farmland abandonment), and a total of 162 quadrats were set up throughout the study area.The leaf area and specific leaf area gradually increased from the steppe zone to the forest zone, and the leaf thickness, leaf tissue density, and leaf carbon content gradually decreased across this gradient. The root functional traits (except for root tissue density and root carbon content) of each vegetation type decreased in all the soil layers in the following order: forest-steppe zone > steppe zone > forest zone. The trends of all ecosystem services were consistent with those of leaf area. In artificial forestlands, plant above-ground functional traits had greater effects on carbon sequestration and soil conservation services than did below-ground functional traits, whereas water conservation services were strongly linked with below-ground functional traits. The above-ground plant functional traits in the natural grasslands had greater effects on all the ecosystem services than did the below-ground functional traits.Natural grasslands are suitable for vegetation restoration in these three vegetation zones.
