In educational research, the complexity of interventions and the diversity of contexts challenge the adequacy of existing reporting standards, primarily tailored for health interventions and randomised controlled trials. Recognising the critical need for appropriate tools to support education research, we developed two checklists: the CheckList Of Standards of reporting in Education Research (CLOSER) and the Checklist for Intervention Description of Education Research (CIDER). CLOSER was designed to guide the comprehensive reporting of quantitative educational intervention research from the abstract to the discussion for multiple study designs. Concurrently, CIDER details the precise features of educational interventions. The final refinements of CLOSER and CIDER comprise of 34 and 17 items, respectively, developed through a five-stage process, including tool adaptation, expert feedback, a 2-round modified Delphi consensus survey, and final refinements. These checklists aim to enhance the clarity of educational intervention research findings, facilitating their replicability and subsequent meaningful translation into practice and policy. This study aims to analyze the alignment between Physics National Volume I test questions and physics curriculum standards as well as establishing a method of evaluating college entrance examination physics test questions using the Evaluation-Surveys of Enacted Curriculum (E-SEC) model. Firstly, Physics National Volume I from 2011 to 2020 was analyzed using the E-SEC model and compared with the physics curriculum standard (2003 and 2017 edition) to calculate the Porter alignment index separately and identify problems. Secondly, the evaluation indexes of test questions were established through the Delphi method, and based on the scoring of the importance of the indexes by education and teaching experts, the Kendall coefficient was applied to test the consistency of the indexes. Then the final evaluation indexes were determined through the single-sample t-test. Finally, 112 high school physics teachers from different regions were selected as the research sample. Data were generated from the questionnaire on teachers' perceptions on college entrance examination physics tests determined by the evaluation index. After collecting the data, descriptive statistical methods were used to analyze. It was found that there is no statistically significant alignment between physics National Volume I and physics curriculum standard. In addition, teachers scored higher on academic achievement (M = 1.906, SD = 0.429) than other dimensions. The findings of this study can be used to compare the alignment between different countries' science curriculum standards and standardized tests, and can provide insights into the improvement of science education from an international perspective. Students expose various intuitions in probability comparison and calculation tasks. Large volumes of research looked into these intuitions by categorizing learners' strategies, but fewer studies considered how these intuitions may be associated with learners' judgments. Even fewer examined the mixed effects of multiple intuitions held by the same individual. Despite calls from scholars to explore students' understanding of probability in different cultural contexts, there has been a dearth of research on how Chinese students understand probability. This study explores the relationship between students' multiple probability-related intuitions and their judgments in the probability contexts among middle school students in China. In this study, we sampled 707 7th–9th graders from Qingdao, China. We measured students' performance in probability comparisons and calculations and their probability-related intuitions about equiprobability bias and representativeness heuristics. With chi-square tests and multinomial logistic regression analysis, the relationship between the 2 intuitions and students' judgments in probability comparison and calculation tasks was examined in detail (including dual effects). The findings of this study include, first, that at the middle school level, students' equiprobability bias and representativeness heuristics fade with age, but they do not disappear completely. Second, students' intuitions may play a role in solving probability problems, where equiprobability bias may induce them to make an "equal probability" judgment and representativeness heuristics may make them consider a mixed outcome more likely to occur. Third, the 2 intuitions coexisted and influenced students' responses together, but the sensitivity of these dual effects to the students' judgments in the qualitative comparison and quantitative calculation tasks differed. This study will contribute to the fast-iterating policymaking in probability education in China by advocating that curriculum standards pay more attention to students' limitations in conceptual understanding and their exposed intuitions or misconceptions. This study may, to some extent, complement previous works focusing on Western students' probability intuitions by confirming that, even for Chinese students who performed well in PISA, their probability perceptions are also accompanied by intuitions. This research aimed to share a personal voice, through a reflexive narrative process, of how the author's experiences as a student, design teacher and academic integrity officer influenced the conceiving and implementation of a student designed university academic integrity campaign. An auto-ethnographic methodology was utilized to share stories, expressing thoughts, feelings, and attitudes, as new knowledge for other universities seeking to engage in academic integrity initiatives. Self-reflective journaling provided key words and phrases that were identified as data and then coded using three Saldaña coding methods (Emotion, In Vivo and Initial). Three key themes emerged: empathy, education, and positive change. It is evident in the key findings that these three themes play a vital role for academic integrity awareness in enabling student engagement, deep learning, redirection of student mindsets, and second chances. These reflections shared a process for fostering behavioural change at student and university levels through academic integrity promotion. Procedural fluency and strategic competence in operating and mathematizing with natural and rational numbers are based on a flexible and meaningful use of mental models, strategies, and procedures. The study to be presented in this paper pursued the question as to which subdomains or tasks relating to procedural fluency and strategic competence at upper primary school level are particularly challenging for elementary school student teachers. The newly devised assessment instrument included mathematical problems from a wide variety of content domains such as numbers and operations with natural and rational numbers, place value, computational strategies, estimation, (inverse) proportion, combinatorics, mathematization, and word problems. A preceding theoretical task analysis ensured that the solution of the problems required adaptation of strategies and flexible reasoning about a procedure or a formula. In the assessment, each of the 15 tasks were presented to 280 first-semester student teachers. As the results of the analyses indicate, combinatorial problems and division problems with rational numbers proved to be particularly challenging for a large proportion of the participants. Supplemental qualitative analyses of solution pathways confirmed that the assessment tasks allowed for multiple solution pathways. The item difficulties could be explained by a lack of ability to link mental models, strategies, and procedures. The study makes a connection between theoretical and empirical research on educational standards and teacher education. It contributes to the international state of research about student teachers' content knowledge by providing specific insights concerning procedural fluency and strategic competence. The development of Global Citizenship Education (GCE) in China has spurred some transitions in cultural education related to English curriculum development. Notwithstanding researchers have discussed cultural education in the field of English language teaching, there is still a dearth of study in Chinese academia about the diachronic analysis of cultural education with reference to GCE in the National English Curriculum Standards (NECS). To fill the gap, a qualitative study was conducted to examine the extent to which Chinese NECS considers the impact of GCE with regard to cultural education, and how cultural education has transitioned between two NECS during the past decade through qualitative content analysis of themes including orientation of cultural education, Chinese cultural education, global cultural education, transcultural education, and cultural education of English-speaking countries. The findings reveal that critical GCE has not been sufficiently taken into account in NECS, while some transitions associated with inclusivity and diversity were identified regarding cultural education in the new curriculum, which could provide implications for English curriculum development and teachers' practices towards more flexible, dynamic and fluid transcultural communications. Despite cultural differences, the Philippines–Japan partnership is developing an intentional teaching curriculum with parallel standards. However, disparities among their respective educational systems have prompted inequalities. As education plays a critical role in collaboration, we explored the Epistemic Goals (EGs) and Epistemic Practices (EPs) in the biology curriculum, with the research question: How do the epistemic goals and practices of the biology curriculum transmit knowledge and skills in the Philippines and Japan? Using an ethnographic design, we conducted two iterative explorations of EGs and EPs. First, we examined the curriculum policy to determine its EGs. Using the A-B-C-D protocol, we employed discourse analysis to evaluate knowledge and skills in the biology grade-level standards. Second, we examined the articulation of goals in classroom teaching practices. We conducted classroom immersion and observed classes to determine EPs and supported our observations through interviews, synthesizing the data using inductive content analysis. Our findings revealed that the Philippines' EGs were to transmit factual knowledge enhanced by basic science skills, and their EPs were audio-visual materials, gamified instructions, guided inquiry, posing questions, and learning-by-doing. In comparison, Japan's EGs were to provide a solid foundation of theoretical and metacognitive knowledge, integrated science skills, and positive attitudes. Its EPs involved cultivating lasting learning, observation, investigation, experimentation, collaborative discussion, and reflective thinking. Our study makes a meaningful contribution by shedding light on crucial ideologies and cultural identities embedded in Biology curricula and teaching traditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Teacher professional development training specifically aims to enhance the abilities to support teaching and learning activities that promote complex skills among students in the 21st century. The Chinese government has implemented this program at various levels, from school to the national level. However, there is still a dearth of investigation on teachers' enthusiasm and participation. Participation in such training can be observed through enthusiastic engagement of teachers in training activities, willingness to engage in discussions, express opinions, communicate, question training speakers, and involvement in the training activities. Based on the Self-Determination Theory and the Theory of Planned Behavior, this study aimed to investigate intrinsic and extrinsic factors affecting the participation of mathematics teachers in professional development training. Employing a quantitative research design, the study focused on mathematics teachers from elementary and junior high schools in Chongqing Province, China. Data were collected using an online survey distributed randomly to target participants, ensuring a broad and diverse representation from various educational levels. The analysis was performed using structural equation modeling techniques. Four critical factors affecting such participation included relatedness, facilitating conditions, quality of training, and optimism. In addition, the results showed a significant positive effect of Participation Intention on actual participation. Integrating psychological insights into professional development (PD) for teachers, focusing on relatedness, facilitating conditions, quality of training, and optimism, can significantly enhance participation. Tailored PD that addresses teachers' psychological needs and removes barriers can increase engagement, fostering a more effective and fulfilling learning environment that supports personal and professional growth. This professional development training also emphasizes the effective use of mathematics textbooks, equipping teachers with strategies to enhance curriculum delivery and align their instructional practices with current educational standards in mathematics. There is a significant amount of data available about students and their learning activities in many educational systems today. However, these datasets are frequently spread across several different digital services, making it challenging to use them strategically. In addition, there are no established standards for collecting, processing, analyzing, and presenting such data. As a result, school leaders, teachers, and students do not capitalize on the possibility of making decisions based on data. This is a serious barrier to the improvement of work in schools, teacher and student progress, and the development of effective Educational Technology (EdTech) products and services. Data standards can be used as a protocol on how different IT systems communicate with each other. When working with data from different public and private institutions simultaneously (e.g., different municipalities and EdTech companies), having a trustworthy data pipeline for retrieving the data and storing it in a secure warehouse is critical. In this study, we propose a technical solution containing a data pipeline by employing a secure warehouse—the Swedish University Computer Network (SUNET), which is an interface for information exchange between operational processes in schools. We conducted a user study in collaboration with four municipalities and four EdTech companies based in Sweden. Our proposal involves introducing a data standard to facilitate the integration of educational data from diverse resources in our SUNET drive. To accomplish this, we created customized scripts for each stakeholder, tailored to their specific data formats, with the aim of merging the students' data. The results of the first four steps show that our solution works. Once the results of the next three steps are in, we will contemplate scaling up our technical solution nationwide. With the implementation of the suggested data standard and the utilization of the proposed technical solution, diverse stakeholders can benefit from improved management, transportation, analysis, and visualization of educational data. The decisions that teachers make in transforming the curriculum into specific lesson plans determine the real enactment or otherwise of curricular ideals. These decisions are shaped by the resources available and by each teacher's goals and orientations. This exploratory study employs Schoenfeld's decision-making model to examine how resources, goals and orientations influence lesson planning for mathematics problem solving, for different profiles of primary teachers in Chile. To this purpose, a survey was conducted among 40 teachers of varying degrees of ability and experience: some were beginning teachers, others were experienced but had no further training in teaching problem solving and a third group was composed of experienced teachers with specific training in this question. Interviews with two teachers from each profile revealed important differences between the three groups. Beginning teachers relied more heavily on official resources such as the official curriculum and standard textbooks, aligning themselves with school requirements. Experienced teachers with problem solving training demonstrated a strong inclination towards teaching through a problem solving approach. While beginning teachers acknowledged the importance of promoting problem solving strategies, they did not usually adapt problems to the mathematical content or to the age/competence of their students. Interestingly, all three groups under-utilised sections of curricular resources that emphasise the present curricular focus on problem solving. Finally, the study found that experience alone is not enough to develop a problem solving approach and that focused professional development programmes are needed to equip teachers with the necessary skills. Background: Nurses are vital partners in the development of pediatric neurocritical care (PNCC) programs. Nursing expertise is acknowledged to be an integral component of high-quality specialty patient care in the field, but little guidance exists regarding educational requirements to build that expertise. We sought to obtain expert consensus from nursing professionals and physicians on curricular priorities for specialized PNCC nursing education in pediatric centers across the United States. Methods: We used a modified Delphi study technique surveying a multidisciplinary expert panel of nursing professionals and physicians. Online surveys were distributed to 44 panelists over three rounds to achieve consensus on curricular topics deemed essential for PNCC nursing education. During each round, panelists were asked to rate topics as essential or not essential, as well as given opportunities to provide feedback and suggest changes. Feedback was shared anonymously to the panelist group throughout the process. Results: From 70 initial individual topics, the consensus process yielded 19 refined topics that were confirmed to be essential for a PNCC nursing curriculum by the expert panel. Discrepancies existed regarding how universally to recommend topics of advanced neuromonitoring, such as brain tissue oxygenation; specialized neurological assessments, such as the serial neurological assessment in pediatrics or National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale; and some disease-based populations. Panelists remarked that not all centers see specific diseases, and not all centers currently employ advanced neuromonitoring technologies and skills. Conclusions: We report 19 widely accepted curricular priorities that can serve as a standard educational base for PNCC nursing. Developing education for nurses in PNCC will complement PNCC programs with targeted nursing expertise that extends comprehensive specialty care to the bedside. Further work is necessary to effectively execute educational certification programs, implement nursing standards in the field, and evaluate the impact of nursing expertise on patient care and outcomes. This study addresses the issue of preference for natural versus synthetic products in different contexts, specifically food, medicines, and cosmetics. Participants were 52 students aged 14-15 years from two schools. We analysed the choices and justifications offered by 28 students from one of the schools before and after receiving an instructional module (nine 60-minute lessons over three weeks) focused on decision-making about natural and processed foods. The goal of instruction was not to guide them towards a particular preference (natural or processed foods) but rather to enable them to make well-reasoned and more scientifically-informed decisions. Transfer of learning to the contexts of medicines and cosmetics was also examined. The responses of students in this experimental group were compared with those of 24 comparison students from the other school who did not receive the instruction. Results suggested that the teaching received by the comparison group (based solely on the standard science curriculum in Spain) does not encourage students to abandon assumptions regarding the inherent superiority of natural products, or to justify their preferences in ways that may be considered on-target with respect to the secondary-level science curriculum. By contrast, a shift towards more scientifically informed choices and reasoning was observed following participation in the instructional module. However, there was limited evidence of transfer of learning from the food context to the other two contexts considered. Only in the medicines context did the experimental group show minor improvements at post-test, suggesting that students perceive greater similarity between food and medicines than between food and cosmetics. The value of generative AI tools in higher education has received considerable attention. Although there are many proponents of its value as a learning tool, many are concerned with the issues regarding academic integrity and its use by students to compose written assessments. This study evaluates and compares the output of three commonly used generative AI tools, ChatGPT, Bing and Bard. Each AI tool was prompted with an essay question from undergraduate (UG) level 4 (year 1), level 5 (year 2), level 6 (year 3) and postgraduate (PG) level 7 biomedical sciences courses. Anonymised AI generated output was then evaluated by four independent markers, according to specifed marking criteria and matched to the Frameworks for Higher Education Qualifcations (FHEQ) of UK level descriptors. Percentage scores and ordinal grades were given for each marking criteria across AI generated papers, inter-rater reliability was calculated using Kendall's coefcient of concordance and generative AI performance ranked. Across all UG and PG levels, ChatGPT performed better than Bing or Bard in areas of scientifc accuracy, scientifc detail and context. All AI tools performed consistently well at PG level compared to UG level, although only ChatGPT consistently met levels of high attainment at all UG levels. ChatGPT and Bing did not provide adequate references, while Bing falsifed references. In conclusion, generative AI tools are useful for providing scientifc information consistent with the academic standards required of students in written assignments. This article aims to analyze conceptual, epistemological, and didactic perspectives that contribute to the modeling of scientific culture in normative and curricular documents guiding initial teaching education in natural sciences programs in Chile. A qualitative approach was employed, utilizing thematic content analysis to inductively extract codes. These codes were grouped into the following categories: (1) Science literacy, (2) Science for citizenship, (3) Science education, (4) Teacher education and standards, (5) Teaching and learning process, and (6) Epistemological and didactic approaches. These categories provide insights to the modeling of scientific culture from the documents analyzed. The study concludes that the referenced model of scientific culture transcends deficit thinking and simplistic tendencies by incorporating sociocultural aspects, thus offering opportunities for a contextualized scientific education. While the model recognizes multiple cultural dimensions involved in the development of scientific literacy, there are noticeable inconsistencies in the epistemological and didactic aspects, indicating traces of 'traditional' visions in cultural and scientific education. Therefore, it is recommended that approaches nurturing the development of southern epistemologies and a scientific culture tailored to local contexts be integrated alongside global trends in teacher education. To succeed in the information age, students need to learn to communicate their understanding of complex topics effectively. This is reflected in both educational standards and standardized tests. To improve their writing ability for highly structured domains like scientific explanations, students need feedback that accurately reflects the structure of their explanations — how they express causal relationships between concepts, and link them together. Unfortunately, providing that type of feedback is difficult and time-consuming for teachers. And Automated Essay Scoring (AES) systems generally aggregate the occurrence of features to provide holistic scores for essays, but give no information about the causal relationships identified by the students. In this paper, we evaluate a method for identifying causal relations in student scientific explanations based on recent advances in Natural Language Processing (NLP). Identification of the causal structure could be used to provide formative feedback to writers and their teachers about how the writing and reasoning could be improved. The identification method we evaluate here is based on Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT, Devlin et al. , 2019), which uses unsupervised learning to create a general language model and then supervised learning to apply that model to a particular task. We compare a base BERT model to several of its special-purpose variants, and include two baseline approaches. The contributions of this study were that we determine which variants worked best along with their strengths and limitations for identifying causal structure in explanations. We found that the models detected the existence of a causal relationship with good performance, but identifying the particular causal relationship will require further research, largely due to the common challenge of imbalanced data classes. Technology has become commonplace in K-12 classrooms with students actively using digital technology to support learning. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether there is empirical support that implementing the ISTE Standards for Students can result in learning gains. A scoping review methodology was used to map extant literature to evidence of learning gains. To ensure transparency in the selection of the articles and the evidence gathering procedure, an a priori method was used. This study is unique in that it provides the first examination of a set of student standards for technology use to learning gains within empirical articles. The findings reveal that there is evidence that all seven of the standards can lead to learning gains. This study is helpful in providing direction and guidance for all, such as educational leaders, teachers, administrators, researchers and policy makers who are looking for a roadmap for effective technology integration that leads to student success. The term "geographical synthetic thinking" is taken from the latest Chinese version of the "Geography Curriculum Standards" (General High School 2017 edition, Compulsory Education 2022 edition) and is one of the four core competencies prioritized in the teaching of geography at the secondary-school level. This study proposes that using geographic subject mind maps improves students' geographical synthetic thinking and develops a set of geographic subject mind map (GSMM) drawing standards for teachers and matching standards and suggestions for teaching applications. Seven geography teachers and their students from eight class sections in seven provinces and cities in China were recruited to participate in the study. The teachers taught students how to use geographic subject mind maps designed to develop students' geographical synthetic thinking in the geography classroom. After 4–5 experimental lessons, the geographical synthetic thinking level of the 267 valid student participants showed a significant improvement, with a statistically significant difference between pretest and posttest scores. The teachers' level of application of geographic subject mind maps in teaching was significantly and positively correlated with the students' improvements in geographical synthetic thinking, demonstrating that the standardized use of geographic subject mind maps in accordance with teaching application standards can effectively improve students' geographical synthetic thinking levels. The purpose of this study was to develop an effective evaluation tool to review course syllabi as a method for ensuring effective outcomes for interdisciplinary personnel preparation. A well-written course syllabus reflects the quality of the academic program in which the coursework is a part. A review of the syllabi across interdisciplinary programs is an attempt to align the quality of the courses and the graduate student competencies as set forth by each program. A syllabus evaluation form was developed and used systematically by three reviewers who gave each syllabus in the program a rating based on the three project target competencies and the listed indicators. For this project, three common components of syllabi were reviewed: learning outcomes, readings, and assignments. The findings suggest that a systematic syllabi review can be used to determine individual course alignment and for overall program evaluation. Findings also suggest that a syllabi evaluation form can be an effective tool to use in systematic syllabi reviews. Highlight: Systematic syllabi evaluation is suggested as a tool to strengthen interdisciplinary teacher preparation programs. Various studies have suggested that computational thinking needs to be highlighted as one of the essential abilities and it should be taught in the standard K-10 curriculum. However, the standard K-10 curriculum does not always contain accessible technology that uses interactive teaching methods and efficient analytical skill development. Also, most practical computational thinking applications that are being created seem to be complex and expensive for educational settings. In this work, we introduce PlutoAR, a marker-based augmented reality (AR) interpreter that is scalable, inexpensive, portable, and can be used as a platform for kids to enhance their skills in an inclusive way. PlutoAR incorporates AR through an interactive toolkit to give students the experiences of both the real and virtual worlds, overcoming the limitations of traditional and non-interactive setups. With the help of technology-based solutions, this effort intends to enable students from all demographic groups to engage in the learning process, regardless of their level of competence. The PlutoAR mobile application presently runs on any Android device with a camera. It creates inbuilt AR experiences like stories, basic elementary mathematics, navigating mazes utilising conditional loops to solve them, and the intuition of gravity. The usability of the PutoAR application is verified by performing the qualitative and quantitative analysis through user feedback. The application seems to be acceptable by users with a System Usability Scale (SUS) score of more than 80. In future, we intend to provide flexibility to the user for adding new content inside the application whenever needed and to promote AR-based collaboration among the students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Contract cheating, the act of students enlisting others to complete academic assignments on their behalf, poses a significant challenge in academic settings, undermining the integrity of education and assessment. It involves submitting work that is falsely represented as the student's own, thus violating academic standards and ethics. The advent of artificial intelligence-based language models, such as ChatGPT, has raised concerns about the potential impact of contract cheating. As these language models can generate human-like text with ease, there are concerns about their role in facilitating and increasing contract cheating incidents. Innovative approaches are thus needed to detect contract cheating and address its implications for academic integrity. This study introduces a machine learning (ML) model focused on identifying deviations from a learner's unique writing style (or their linguistic fingerprint) to detect contract cheating, complementing traditional plagiarism detection methods. The study involved 150 learners majoring in engineering and business who were studying English as a foreign language at a college in Saudi Arabia. The participants were asked to produce descriptive essays in English within a consistent genre over one semester. The proposed approach involved data preprocessing, followed by transformation using Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF). To address data imbalance, random oversampling was applied, and logistic regression (LR) was trained with optimal hyperparameters obtained through grid search. Performance evaluation was conducted using various metrics. The results showed that the ML model was effective in identifying non-consistent essays with improved accuracy after implementing random oversampling. The LR model achieved an accuracy of 98.03%, precision of 98.52%, recall of 98.03%, and F1-score of 98.24%. The proposed ML model shows promise as an indicator of contract cheating incidents, providing an additional tool for educators and institutions to uphold academic integrity. However, it is essential to interpret the model results cautiously, as they do not constitute unequivocal evidence of cheating but rather serve as grounds for further investigation. We also emphasize the ethical implications of such approaches and suggest avenues for future research to explore the model's applicability among first-language writers and to conduct longitudinal studies on second-language learners' language development over longer periods. Background: Motility disorders are frequently encountered in gastroenterology (GI) practice, yet a national structured training curriculum for GI fellows in motility disorders is lacking. Since GI fellowships vary considerably in opportunities for specialized esophageal motility (EM) training, novel educational technology may be leveraged to provide standardized EM curriculum to train GI fellows in esophageal manometry. Methods: GI fellows participated in an online EM learning program at a single academic center from 2017 to 2022. Fellows answered case-based questions and were provided with evidence-based, corrective feedback related to core EM learning objectives. The primary outcome was change in knowledge and comfort in interpretation and clinical application of EM studies. Results: Sixty-nine fellows actively participated in the online EM curriculum. 65 fellows completed a pre-curriculum test, and 54 fellows completed a post-curriculum test. There was a cumulative improvement between pre-curriculum test and post-curriculum test scores from 70 to 87%, respectively (p < 0.001). Fellows had a mean improvement of 19% in questions as they progressed through the curriculum. Prior to enrolling in the EM course, 26% of fellows felt comfortable in interpreting EM studies compared to 54% of fellows after completion of the program (p < 0.001). Conclusion: An online, technology-based curriculum was effective in educating GI fellows on core competencies of EM. Fellows demonstrated improvement in proficiency of clinically important EM studies and increased comfort in interpreting EM studies. Further studies are needed to evaluate the use of technology-based learning to widely disseminate a structured training curriculum in EM, particularly in training programs without a motility presence. Chronic Rhinosinusitis (CRS) affects nearly 10% of the global population, leading to substantial economic and quality-of-life burdens. While patient education has improved outcomes in other chronic conditions, its impact on CRS remains understudied. The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured patient education program on the psychological well-being and symptom severity of individuals diagnosed with CRS. This was a prospective, randomized controlled trial conducted in a tertiary care centre from January 2021 to December 2022. We enrolled 200 adult patients diagnosed with CRS based on the European Position Paper on Rhinosinusitis and Nasal Polyps guidelines. Participants were randomized into two groups: the control group, receiving conventional CRS medical management, and the intervention group, receiving conventional treatment plus a structured patient education program. By the end of the study, 100 participants from each group completed the 2-year follow-up. The intervention group showed significant improvements in psychological well-being, with HADS scores decreasing from 10 ± 3.5 to 7 ± 3.0. CRS symptom severity, as measured by SNOT-22 scores, also significantly improved in the intervention group, dropping from 45 ± 10 to 35 ± 9. Additionally, the intervention group had fewer acute CRS flare-ups over two years compared to the control group. Adherence to nasal spray usage was higher in the intervention group, and feedback on the educational program was largely positive. A structured patient education program, when added to conventional CRS treatment, enhances psychological well-being, and reduces symptom severity. Language-appropriate care is critical for equitable, high-quality health care, but educational standards to assure graduate medical trainees are prepared to give such care are lacking. Detailed guidance for graduate medical education is provided by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education through the following: (1) an assessment framework for competencies, subcompetencies, and milestones for trainees and (2) the Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) Pathways for assessment of trainees' learning environments. These tools do not include a robust framework to evaluate trainees' abilities to offer language-appropriate care. They also do not address the learning environment's potential to support such care. A multidisciplinary group of linguistic, medical, and educational experts drafted a new subcompetency with milestones and an expanded CLER Pathway to highlight the importance of equitable care for patients who prefer languages other than English. These resources offer residency and fellowship programs tools to guide assessment, curriculum development, and learning-environment improvements related to language-appropriate care. Recognizing that programs have unique needs and resources, we propose a range of initial actions to address language equity. In this forum paper, I grapple with critical questions about our understanding of science as a discipline and the education standards formulated within that framing. My exploration is contextualized in our current socio-political climate and is presented in discourse with Charity Winburn's Meeting the needs of the individual student in the post-pandemic era: an analysis of the next generation science standards. I draw on Winburn's astute observations about the narratives and epistemologies that shape our current science standards as a springboard for diving deeper into questions about the ways of knowing and types of knowledge traditions that are uplifted in US science education. Through a dialogic process, I outline a critical analysis of the myth of neutrality, the prioritization of epistemologies, and the standardization of learning ingrained in traditional science curricula. Since the adoption of the No Child Left Behind Act, states have had to adopt rigorous, K-12 academic science standards to secure federal funding. Corresponding to this legislation and a concurrent call for equitable, relevant science standards, the Next Generation Science Standards were developed. As the country learns to coexist with the Covid-19 pandemic, science educators and policymakers need to address how to support the students with this shared experience. Grounded in self-determination theory as a critical perspective, I discuss the content and implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards through analyzing the potential impact they may have on student perception of their own autonomy, competence, and relatedness. I seek to continue the discussion around particular shortcomings in the NGSS relating to the needs of the post-pandemic student including issues around the topics of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The development of students' core competencies for the future society has become a shared goal in curriculum reform worldwide. Efforts are being made to investigate which core competencies should be cultivated and how they relate to the curriculum content. Specifically, designing core competency-oriented intended curriculum and translating it into implemented curriculum are common concerns and challenges encountered by countries during curriculum reform. In order to promote mutual sharing and learning among different countries and regions, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) developed an analytical comparison framework and standards based on The Future of Education and Skills project. This study conducted a comparison between the 2011 edition and 2022 edition of the Compulsory Education Chemistry Curriculum Standards (CECCS) for students in grade 7 to grade 9. It identified 737 coding units for five learning themes and conducted a specific analysis and comparison using the Curriculum Content Mapping (CCM) and Theme Content Mapping (TCM). Heat maps are generated to reflect the correlation between China's grade 7 to grade 9 CECCS and the twenty-eight competencies identified in the OECD project, as well as the main emphasis before and after the revision of the curriculum standards. A mixed research method of qualitative and quantitative analysis was conducted to explore the characteristics of Chinese chemistry curriculum structure. This study provides insights into experiences regarding embodying core competencies, designing competency-oriented intended curriculum, and providing guidance for curriculum implementation in grade 7 to grade 9. Global science education reform calls for developing student knowledge-in-use that applies the integrated knowledge of core ideas and scientific practices to make sense of phenomena or solve problems. Knowledge-in-use development requires a long-term, standards-aligned, coherent learning system, including curriculum and instruction, assessment, and professional learning. This paper addresses the challenge of transforming standards into classrooms for knowledge-in-use and presents an iterative design process for developing a coherent and standards-aligned learning system. Using a project-based learning approach, we present a theory-driven, empirically validated learning system aligned with the U.S. science standards, consisting of four consecutive curriculum and instruction materials, assessments, and professional learning to support students' knowledge-in-use in high school chemistry. We also present the iterative development and testing process with empirical evidence to support the effectiveness of our learning system in a five-year NSF-funded research project. This paper discusses the theoretical perspectives of developing an NGSS-aligned, coherent, and effective learning system and recaps the development and testing process by unpacking all essential components in our learning system. We conclude that our theory-driven and empirically validated learning system would inform high school teachers and researchers across countries in transforming their local science standards into curriculum materials to support students' knowledge-in-use development. Extant literature depicts theoretical territories of student voice and partnership as discrete categories. In this article, we argue that this depiction limits practice. We posit instead that theorisation which advances holistic voice and partnership through an active student participation (ASP) approach is necessary for liberatory higher education informed by practitioners and researchers together. We draw on emergent examples in practice which offer opportunities for further development for theorists and practitioners to create novel research opportunities. Through drawing on conceptions of student partnership pedagogy as a tool to address grand challenges, and an acknowledgement of the power potential in student voice and representation roles, we advance new possibility for transformative higher education for students. Ultimately, we advance an ASP approach which crosses the student voice and partnership partition towards a holistic and integrated active and collective student engagement and responsibility for higher education. Science education and science education research have long taken a lead in educating the public about climate change by arguing that the public needs to understand the scientific models that explain the mechanisms of global warming and predict future impacts. However, as of yet, this focus on understanding climate models has failed to have an impact on motivating a coherent societal response to climate change or the preparation for its consequences. One issue is the prevalence of technocratic, neoliberal, and settler colonial discourses in science and engineering education standards documents that perpetuate colonialism and racism and undermine the potential impact of science literacy as a response to climate change. In her article "Just worlding design principles: Childrens' multispecies and radical care priorities in science and engineering education," Anastasia Sanchez provided a clear vision for how radical care could offer a principal ethic by which to create a more just and caring response to climate change, a defining issue of our time. At its core, radical care is about building relationality. One strategy for fostering relationality is perspective-taking. Nurturing perspective-taking in science and engineering education could build the sense of co-responsibility for each other that is essential for community-based strength and resistance in the face of cultural and ecological disruption and destruction. Curriculum standards are a critical component of a nation's educational system and directly impact talent development and overall national development. Most studies on curriculum standards focus on a single competency. This study aims to understand the extent to which the competencies outlined in the OECD 2030-oriented learning framework are reflected in China's compulsory education biology curriculum as a whole and within individual content subjects. In this study, we conducted a content analysis of China's National Biology Curriculum Standards (Grades 7–9). The result shows that the standards cover 20 of the 28 competencies, focusing on foundational literacies, transformative competencies and competency development. We found that certain competencies, such as Action, Literacy, and Problem-solving, were emphasized across content subjects, while other competencies were uniquely emphasized within specific content subjects. This study provides a comprehensive view of China's National Biology Curriculum Standards (Grades 7–9) from the perspective of future literacy development and can inform efforts to reform the curriculum. Aridor et al. (this issue) focus on two middle school students navigating the nuances of uncertainty in science, using a citizen science context as an opportunity to examine students' scientific reasoning. Empirical research on the impacts of, and effective design practices for, citizen science in formal school settings is only just recently emerging as a field of inquiry in the learning sciences, and in science and environmental education. In this commentary, I specifically consider the productive tensions raised by the fact that the very nature of citizen science in schools is the coming together of the "figured worlds" of professional science and schools, and, I would argue, local communities. Matuk et al. (this issue) shared what might be considered a nested inquiry in which high school students in the U.S. participated in an open science community through a citizen science platform focused on human brain and behavior research, with scaffolded but still student-directed curriculum support. This multi-case study examined the strengths and weaknesses of aligning teaching–learning-assessment of classroom project-based learning to curriculum standards and offered suggestions for teacher training and instructional improvement. The study constructed an alignment analysis framework for analyzing the cognitive dimension of classroom project-based learning and analyzed the situation of two junior high schools in Zhejiang Province using deductive and inductive content analysis. According to the results, the cognitive demands of classroom instruction activities and classroom assessments were much higher than those of teaching objectives and curriculum standards. Simultaneously, classroom instruction paid insufficient attention to engineering topics, and all instructional implementation elements exhibited content and cognitive deficiencies. The study suggests that teachers' dearth of engineering knowledge and the characteristics of project-based learning in the classroom are the primary reasons for the lack of alignment among three instructional implementation elements with curriculum standards. Similarly, it was discovered that classroom project-based learning has the characteristics of co-development of physical knowledge and engineering content and that future research can focus on developing more effective forms of classroom content organization and time distribution. Purpose: Orthopaedic patient education materials (PEMs) have repeatedly been shown to be well above the recommended reading level by the National Institute of Health and American Medical Association. The purpose of this study is to create a standardized method to improve the readability of PEMs describing spine-related conditions and injuries. It is hypothesized that reducing the usage of complex words (≥ 3 syllables) and reducing sentence length to < 15 words per sentence improves readability of PEMs as measured by all seven readability formulas used. Methods: OrthoInfo.org was queried for spine-related PEMs. The objective readability of PEMs was evaluated using seven unique readability formulas before and after applying a standardized method to improve readability while preserving critical content. This method involved reducing the use of > 3 syllable words and ensuring sentence length is < 15 words. Paired samples t-tests were conducted to assess relationships with the cut-off for statistical significance set at p < 0.05. Results: A total of 20 spine-related PEM articles were used in this study. When comparing original PEMs to edited PEMs, significant differences were seen among all seven readability scores and all six numerical descriptive statistics used. Per the Flesch Kincaid Grade level readability formula, one original PEM (5%) versus 15 edited PEMs (75%) met recommendations of a sixth-grade reading level. Conclusion: The current study shows that using this standardized method significantly improves the readability of spine-related PEMs and significantly increased the likelihood that PEMs will meet recommendations for being at or below the sixth-grade reading level. The European Tertiary Education Register (ETER) is the reference dataset on European Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). ETER provides data on nearly 3,500 HEIs in about 40 European countries, including descriptive information, geographical information, students and graduates (with various breakdowns), revenues and expenditures, personnel, and research activities; as of March 2023, data cover the years from 2011–2020. ETER complies with OECD-UNESCO-EUROSTAT standards for educational statistics; most data are collected from National Statistical Authorities (NSAs) or ministries of participating countries and are subject to extensive checks and harmonization. The development of ETER has been funded by the European Commission and is part of the current efforts to establish a European Higher Education Sector Observatory; it is closely connected to the establishment of a broader data infrastructure in the field of science and innovation studies (RISIS). Topographic map-reading skills are critical for certain professions but can be difficult to learn. The purpose of this pilot study is to provide insight on the role augmented reality technology can play in the development of topographic map-reading skills. Using a situated cognition theoretical framework, this study tracks the development of students' skills in three different instructional approaches using the Topographic Mapping Assessment (TMA), instructor observations, and student feedback. Using a quasi-experimental research design, 85 college-level students in eight sections of an introductory undergraduate geoscience laboratory course were assigned to a control group (n = 19) that was instructed using the standard curriculum (paper-and-pencil lab exercises and field trips), a 2-D group (n = 14) that completed six activities using 2-D maps, or an augmented reality sandbox (ARS) group (n = 52) that completed six activities requiring both 2-D maps and augmented reality technology. Results from multi-level analyses of covariance suggest no significant difference in overall post-instruction scores, except female students in the ARS groups (n = 17) tended to score higher than students in the control group (n = 11), potentially indicating this method can increase outcomes for females in STEM. Other identified instructional benefits of using the ARS include increased collaboration between students, greater visibility to the instructor of student difficulties and challenges, and improved ability for the instructor to provide real-time feedback and guidance. Background: Gastroesophageal balloon tamponade (BT) tube placement is a life-saving procedure for refractory bleeding from gastroesophageal varices performed by gastroenterologists, intensivists, internists, and emergency medicine physicians. Despite a recognized need for procedural training, no standard curriculum or assessment tools exist. Given the infrequent performance of this procedure, the development of a representative and accessible simulation model would permit hands-on training to practice and maintain proficiency with BT tube placement. Aims: To assess BT tube placement performance before and after a novel simulation-based learning module in gastroenterology fellows and faculty. Methods: A 16-item knowledge questionnaire and 22-item procedural skill checklist utilizing a novel 3D printed esophagus model were developed to assess participant knowledge, procedural skills, and confidence prior to our simulation-based intervention and again 8–12 weeks after. Performance metrics were compared pre- and post-intervention within groups and between participant groups. Results: Fifteen gastroenterology fellows (of 15 eligible; 100%) and 14 gastroenterology faculty (of 29 eligible; 48%) completed training. Fellows demonstrated improvement in knowledge (55% to 79%, p < 0.001) and procedural skill (35% to 57%, p < 0.001) following training. Baseline faculty performance did not differ from fellows' performance and post-intervention showed similar improvement in knowledge (61% to 77%, p = 0.001) and procedural skill (40% to 49%, p = 0.147). Overall satisfaction with training was high in both groups post-intervention and faculty felt more confident teaching fellows. Conclusion: The presented learning module offers a unique, low stakes opportunity for learners to improve skills, gain knowledge, and build confidence in placing BT tubes using a realistic simulation model. This study investigated the characteristics of high-quality mathematics teaching in China following the launch of a new standard curriculum. Data was gathered through video-recorded observations of lessons that won a national teaching contest. We identified and examined the characteristics of the instructional practices through six domains: (1) the mathematics, (2) cognitive demand, (3) classroom management (4) equitable access to mathematical content, (5) agency, authority, and identity, and (6) formative assessment. The results indicated that a well-managed classroom and low level of formative assessment were salient features of the observed lessons. In most cases, though students had a chance to say or explain things, their ideas were not explored or built upon. The majority of the mathematics task designs offered possibilities for "student struggle," but teaching practices tended to "scaffold away" the challenges, which reduced cognitive demand for students. Good mathematics instructional practices are nested in underlying social and cultural values and norms. Implications for practice and future research are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding the cognitive processes, skills and strategies that examinees use in testing is important for construct validity and score interpretability. Although response processes evidence has long been included as an important aspect of validity (i.e., Standards for Educational and Psychological Tests, 1999), relevant studies are often lacking, especially in large scale educational and psychological testing. An important method for studying response processes involves explanatory mathematical modeling of item responses and item response times from variables that represent sources of cognitive complexity. For many item types, examinees may differ in strategies applied to responding to items. Mixture class item response theory models can identify latent classes of examinees with different processes, skills and strategies based on their pattern of item responses. This study will illustrate the use of response times in conjunction with explanatory item response theory models and mixture models, to provide information relevant to test validity and, hence, to score interpretations. Research studies and national education standards support the importance of young children acquiring narrative skills for early language and literacy development. Less is known, however, about teachers' beliefs about how essential it is to provide young children with narrative instruction. Using a person-centered approach, the current study investigated whether there were distinct profiles or patterns of teachers' beliefs about narrative instruction. The study also examined the extent to which teachers' background characteristics predicted profile membership and the implications of profile membership for classroom practices related to language and literacy. Results revealed four distinct profiles: (1) Narrative Naysayers; (2) Story Element Promoters; (3) Average Endorsers; and (4) Narrative Enthusiasts, indicating that not all teachers equally endorse the importance of narrative instruction for young children. Furthermore, associations between profiles and the time teachers allocated to various language and literacy supportive practices suggested implications of beliefs for children's access to learning opportunities. There were also distinctions among some profiles in teachers' educational level, teaching experience and grade level taught. TOOLBOX is a school-based social and emotional learning (SEL) program to teach and reinforce 12 tools (e.g., Breathing Tool, Courage Tool) for healthy youth development. Although TOOLBOX has been broadly adopted, it remains largely untested. This quasi-experimental study aims to examine the relationship between TOOLBOX implementation and the growth of social-emotional competence (SEC) among K-2 students. First, we compare the growth trajectories of SEC between TOOLBOX and non-TOOLBOX conditions during one academic year. Then, within the TOOLBOX condition, we compare two implementation directives—TOOLBOX Standard and TOOLBOX Primer—to assess (a) the extent to which TOOLBOX was implemented and (b) the SEC growth trajectories among youth. Two district schools were given an implementation directive and materials to implement TOOLBOX Standard curriculum (full, structured lesson plans and strategies with higher dosage anticipated), and two district schools to implement TOOLBOX Primer (basic, introductory lesson plans and strategies with lower dosage anticipated). There were no dosage benchmarks available for either condition. Two additional district schools practiced as usual (non-TOOLBOX). The study sample consisted of 1766 K-2 students and their 80 classroom teachers. Student SEC was measured three times using the Devereux Student Strengths Assessment-Mini, a teacher-completed brief behavioral rating scale. Implementation dosage and quality were measured three times using teacher self-reports. Latent growth modeling and t tests were conducted. In Fall, SEC did not differ between TOOLBOX and non-TOOLBOX conditions. TOOLBOX students, however, showed a greater increase in SEC over the year. Within the TOOLBOX condition, Standard teachers incorporated the "tools" into academic instruction more frequently in Spring compared to Primer teachers. For most other implementation variables, no statistical difference was found between TOOLBOX implementation directives. Student SEC growth trajectories did not differ between Standard and Primer schools. Quasi-experimental evidence supports the overall benefits of TOOLBOX on K-2 students' social and emotional growth. We discuss possible reasons for non-differential outcomes between Standard and Primer implementation directives within the TOOLBOX condition (e.g., gap between implementation directives and actual implementation behaviors). The gap between implementation directives and behaviors may provide an impetus for practicing school psychologists to contribute to more robust forms of implementation leadership (e.g., remove obstacles for implementation) and offer implementation support (e.g., coaching, feedback loops). Since the 1990s, the emphasis on intelligibility as a goal in pronunciation teaching rather than near-native or nativelike competence has been reinforced by the increasing use of English as a lingua franca. The insight of the intelligibility principle has greatly impressed researchers in China's English education, but has "very limited and weak" impacts on English pronunciation teaching and learning in China. English education in China has been systematically conducted from schools to universities under the direction of national syllabi and curriculum standards issued by the Ministry of Education. Using the documentary research method, this paper, the first try of its kind, takes a historical look at China's national syllabi and curriculum standards for schools issued after 1949, focusing on the conception of the nature and the role of pronunciation and pronunciation teaching, pronunciation goals, teacher's role, as well as requirements or suggestions about what to teach and how to teach. By tracing the process of developments in pronunciation teaching notions and principles that were and/or are officially advocated in China, the paper reveals two important facts. First, the English national syllabi and curriculum standards have encompassed both the nativeness principle and the intelligibility principle, though implicitly giving dominance to the former one, which in part accounts for the favor for the nativeness principle in formal English education, especially in schools, in China. Second, with the notion of English as a lingua franca adopted in the syllabi and curriculum standards, the intelligibility principle has been gaining more and more weight. Consequently, by elaborating that the two principles are by nature not incompatible, it is proposed that the current curriculum standards go further to take balanced attitudes towards the two principles so as to lead Chinese English teachers and students to set more realistic and instrumental-pragmatic pronunciation goals in line with varying English learning purposes. The findings and the proposal could be adopted by teachers and learners so as to change the school reality and may shed light on future relevant revisions of the current national English curriculum standards, teaching material development, teacher training, and pronunciation teaching methodology research. In this article, I examine the educational purposes of higher education in terms of the societal outcomes of educating students through higher education. Based on an analysis of the first 80 volume of Higher Education, published from 1972 to 2020, I argue that discussions of societal educational purposes were dominated by authors from the Anglophone, global North and these authors were more likely to write as if the educational purposes under discussion were relevant to all higher education systems regardless of national context. This tendency increased over time. The overall models of the educational purposes in each contribution differed in terms of whether they focused on single, multiple, or differentiated sets of educational purposes. I argue that as higher education has become increasingly stratified, there has been less discussion of whether there are differences in the societal outcomes served by different forms of higher education. This is problematic because it obscures the potential differences in the educational purposes of higher education in different societies and the extent to which inequalities are perpetuated by differences in the forms of higher education to which students gain access. In order to address this, I argue there is a need to move away from a focus on the educational purposes of the institutional form of 'the University' to focus on the educational purposes that are served by different configurations of higher education systems.
