Abstract The current study adopts a variational pragmatic approach to compare the realization of the speech act of suggestion in two Arabic dialects: Alexandrian, spoken in an important coastal city of Egypt, and Najdi, spoken in the capital city of Saudi Arabia. Data were collected from 240 participants, half of whom were Alexandrians while the other half were Najdis, through the use of a discourse completion task consisting of six situations. The data were coded following a well-known taxonomy of suggestion strategies, and external and internal modifiers were also explored. The results showed a general preference for the use of direct suggestions among the participants. The results of statistical tests showed that Najdis produced a significantly higher number of direct strategies than Alexandrians who tended to use more conventionalized strategies than Najdis. The analysis of the DCT also showed a clear influence of gender, social distance, and social dominance on making suggestions among both Alexandrians and Najdis. The results are discussed in light of relevant theoretical models and the existing literature.

Abstract The implementation of the noninvasive prenatal test has shown the importance of involving future care providers in healthcare innovations at an early stage. Therefore, in this explorative study in-depth interviews were performed with Dutch midwife counselors who explicitly identify as religious, to explore how they currently deal with their worldview during counseling for prenatal anomaly screening and regarding their perspectives on heritable genome editing (HGE). HGE is a potentially disruptive technology in which a pregnancy is initiated with a modified embryo or gamete, thus passing on modified genes to a future child and the following generations. Currently, a significant majority of countries prohibit HGE. However, implications for healthcare policy and practice are discussed in an ongoing scientific and societal dialogue. Eleven counselors participated: eight Christians and three Muslims. Two main themes were identified: ‘a search for role identity as a healthcare counselor’ and ‘concerns about the application of HGE’. Our findings showed that both values and underlying worldview-based beliefs influence perspectives on current and emerging reproductive techniques. Healthcare counselors search for ways to harmonize their professional role with contrasting values based on worldview-based beliefs. Moreover, for HGE, counselors fear ‘slippery slopes’ regarding the boundaries between treatment and enhancement, the severity assessment of certain conditions, and society’s appreciation for the quality of life of people with disabilities. Regarding future implementation, counselors’ medical education might benefit from a focus not only on qualification (acquiring knowledge) but also on balancing between socialization (e.g., adhering the norm of nondirective counseling) and subjectification (being a ‘self’ in relation to everything learned). In the global call for broad public and stakeholder engagement to explore the acceptability of HGE, the influence of both values and beliefs should be deliberated.

Abstract Compared to the other English medium instruction (EMI) issues, assessment has received very scant research attention. A complex issue in EMI assessment relates to the role of English in measuring learning outcomes, and whether or not language should be assessed along with technical content. Combining questionnaire and semi-structured interviewed data, this study explored the English-related assessment practices and beliefs of native-Arabic and non-native-Arabic faculty members teaching EMI scientific majors at eight Saudi universities. Two hundred and forty-nine faculty members completed the questionnaire, whereas 20 faculty members were interviewed. The results showed that the content teachers do not give much weight to language quality when evaluating students’ written or oral performance. Compared to native-Arabic peers, the non-native-Arabic teachers, who intuitively have little or no translanguaging in their instruction, were found to pay slightly more attention to evaluating students’ English and to considering it in assessing students’ academic performance. Meanwhile, the interviews revealed that the teachers’ negative language-related assessment attitude has been shaped by the view that they are non-responsible for correcting students’ English, and by the too many language errors noted in students’ performance. Finally, the teachers’ highly-rated language assessment self-efficacy beliefs did not match their actual assessment practices.

Abstract For 15 years, gene therapy has been viewed as a beacon of hope for inherited retinal diseases. Many preclinical investigations have centered around vectors with maximal gene expression capabilities, yet despite efficient gene transfer, minimal physiological improvements have been observed in various ciliopathies. Retinitis pigmentosa-type 28 (RP28) is the consequence of bi-allelic null mutations in the FAM161A, an essential protein for the structure of the photoreceptor connecting cilium (CC). In its absence, cilia become disorganized, leading to outer segment collapses and vision impairment. Within the human retina, FAM161A has two isoforms: the long one with exon 4, and the short one without it. To restore CC in Fam161a-deficient mice shortly after the onset of cilium disorganization, we compared AAV vectors with varying promoter activities, doses, and human isoforms. While all vectors improved cell survival, only the combination of both isoforms using the weak FCBR1-F0.4 promoter enabled precise FAM161A expression in the CC and enhanced retinal function. Our investigation into FAM161A gene replacement for RP28 emphasizes the importance of precise therapeutic gene regulation, appropriate vector dosing, and delivery of both isoforms. This precision is pivotal for secure gene therapy involving structural proteins like FAM161A.

Abstract There are already a number of autonomous robots that play a significant role in improving the quality of healthcare in different areas ranging from basic health diagnosis to complex surgeries. However, using robots and machine learning applications in the healthcare context poses concerns over liability for patient injury. This paper will thus attempt to investigate the potential legal problems that might arise if AI technology evolves or is commonly used in clinical practice. It also examines whether the traditional doctrines of liability can adequately address the liability for the injuries stemming from acts of autonomous robots. As such, this paper adopted both descriptive and analytical methodologies to explore the main focus of the study. while the descriptive methodology was used to spot light on various theories of liability, the analytical methodology was used to critically examine the main theories that have been advanced to deal with autonomous robots and predict the necessity of legal reform. Throughout this paper, the authors insist on the importance of distinguishing between robots in light of their degree of autonomy and then drafting liability rules depending on whether the action was done autonomously by an unattended robot or whether it was done automatically by an attended robot. Finally, the paper concludes with the proposal of a series of factors to be considered for the future regulation of AI Robots in the healthcare context.

Abstract This article maps the main fault lines between the concerns for Shari’ah compliance, which are central to Islamic commercial arbitration and the categories of private international law. While issues such as applicable law, public order and the enforcement of foreign arbitral awards are routinely addressed in private international law, questions remain as to the extent to which the latter is able to accommodate additional concerns, which would be relevant for Shari’ah compatibility of an Islamic commercial arbitral award. This study is based on the qualitative methodology that is standard in legal analysis. This methodology consists, first, of desk-based research to compare the formulations found in a variety of textual sources: national and international legal sources, doctrinal opinions and the rulings of different courts. Second, the implications of different formulations are drawn out by considering actual and possible ‘limit cases’ in which the different wordings would translate into incompatible solutions. Third, proposals are made to help address the ensuing incompatibilities. Establishing a common operational ground between international private law and Shari’ah compliance in commercial arbitration would enable the two systems to function in a more coordinated fashion, reducing the legal uncertainties that are otherwise present when they are treated as parallel, mutually incommunicable systems. Through a focus on the specific misalignment between Islamic commercial arbitration and private international law, our article makes targeted suggestions that would materially address some of the concerns posed by the increasing internationalisation of Islamic finance—and by its attendant need for cross-border dispute resolution respectful of the ethical goals of Shari’ah compliance.

Abstract The brittle hair syndrome Trichothiodystrophy (TTD) is characterized by variable clinical features, including photosensitivity, ichthyosis, growth retardation, microcephaly, intellectual disability, hypogonadism, and anaemia. TTD‐associated mutations typically cause unstable mutant proteins involved in various steps of gene expression, severely reducing steady‐state mutant protein levels. However, to date, no such link to instability of gene‐expression factors for TTD‐associated mutations in MPLKIP/TTDN1 has been established. Here, we present seven additional TTD individuals with MPLKIP mutations from five consanguineous families, with a newly identified MPLKIP variant in one family. By mass spectrometry‐based interaction proteomics, we demonstrate that MPLKIP interacts with core splicing factors and the lariat debranching protein DBR1. MPLKIP‐deficient primary fibroblasts have reduced steady‐state DBR1 protein levels. Using Human Skin Equivalents (HSEs), we observed impaired keratinocyte differentiation associated with compromised splicing and eventually, an imbalanced proteome affecting skin development and, interestingly, also the immune system. Our data show that MPLKIP, through its DBR1 stabilizing role, is implicated in mRNA splicing, which is of particular importance in highly differentiated tissue.

Abstract Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is a cornerstone of prostate cancer (PCa) management. Although tumors initially regress, many progress to a hormone‐independent state termed castration‐resistant PCa (CRPC), for which treatment options are limited. We here report that the major luminal cell population in tumors of Pten(i)pe−/− mice, generated by luminal epithelial cell‐specific deletion of the tumor suppressor PTEN after puberty, is castration‐resistant and that the expression of inflammation and stemness markers is enhanced in persistent luminal cells. In addition, hypoxia‐inducible factor 1 (HIF1) signaling, which we have previously demonstrated to be induced in luminal cells of Pten(i)pe−/− mice and to promote malignant progression, is further activated. Importantly, we show that genetic and pharmacological inhibition of HIF1A sensitizes Pten‐deficient prostatic tumors to castration and provides durable therapeutic responses. Furthermore, HIF1A inhibition induces apoptotic signaling in human CRPC cell lines. Therefore, our data demonstrate that HIF1A in prostatic tumor cells is a critical factor that enables their survival after ADT, and identify it as a target for CRPC management.

Abstract In the present work, we model the diffusion of scientific knowledge embodied in the textbooks of the Sphaera corpus. This corpus consists of more than 350 different editions of textbooks used for teaching astronomy in European universities during the early modern period. Connections between the editions are based on mutual semantic knowledge and are arranged in a multiplex network of four layers, with each layer representing a different semantic relation. The modeling aims for a better understanding (and possible prediction) of the process of knowledge accumulation in the various editions. We consider semantic text-parts as knowledge units transferred between the editions, and show how these units spread using both an SI model and its modified version, the Bass model. Both models include a parameter representing the rate of transfer, which is interpreted as the mechanism underlying the process of knowledge accumulation; the Bass model has an extra parameter that represents the rate of external influence and stands out as the “resistance to adoption from” and “resistance to be influenced by” other knowledge systems. The modeling has helped us to chart the path and mechanisms of knowledge transformation in the early modern period. Networks are identified by adding further layers whose graphs express socioeconomic relationships and conditional sub-networks. The comparison between the model and these layers enables us to conclude that the accumulation of knowledge was highly dependent on the institutional embedding of scientific production because the diffusion of knowledge was mostly determined by the economic constraints of early modern printers and publishers. It further suggests that geographic proximity played a role—although secondary—in the diffusion of knowledge but only under the condition that the book producers involved were still living. The transformation of early modern scientific knowledge is, therefore, highly dependent on the institutional and economic contexts of the book producers.

Abstract Human genome editing technologies are advancing at a rapid pace, and their potential disruptive implications lead to ethical and societal questions that cannot be addressed by scientists alone. Further consideration of different stakeholders’ views on human genome editing is crucial to translate society’s needs and values into thoughtful regulations and policies. We therefore explored the views of carriers of autosomal dominant disorders on somatic and heritable genome editing (SGE and HGE) and the role of their (secular or religious) worldviews. This group of stakeholders would be most impacted by the eventual clinical application of genome editing technologies and therefore their views must be taken into account. Ten in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted, and data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. We found an overarching theme: ‘Balancing between the desire to prevent serious diseases in individuals through HGE, and the fear of the harmful impact on society and nature’ and three main themes: ‘The benefits of SGE and HGE for individuals’, ‘the societal consequences of using HGE’, and ‘the consequences of interfering with nature through HGE’. Although the lived experiences of the participants varied, they were positive towards the safe use of SGE regardless of the severity of conditions, and most participants were positive towards the use of HGE but only to prevent severe genetic conditions. A few participants were against using HGE in any case, regardless of the severity of a condition, based on their religious beliefs. However, most participants with either religious or secular worldviews reported similar views on HGE, both regarding their desire to prevent serious genetic disorders and their fear of the impact on society and nature if HGE were implemented more widely. Reflecting on HGE involved complex and often ambivalent views. When engaging different stakeholders, space is needed for ambivalence and the weighing of values.

Abstract Hyperreactive platelets are commonly observed in diabetic patients indicating a potential link between glucose homeostasis and platelet reactivity. This raises the possibility that platelets may play a role in the regulation of metabolism. Pancreatic β cells are the central regulators of systemic glucose homeostasis. Here, we show that factor(s) derived from β cells stimulate platelet activity and platelets selectively localize to the vascular endothelium of pancreatic islets. Both depletion of platelets and ablation of major platelet adhesion or activation pathways consistently resulted in impaired glucose tolerance and decreased circulating insulin levels. Furthermore, we found platelet‐derived lipid classes to promote insulin secretion and identified 20‐Hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (20‐HETE) as the main factor promoting β cells function. Finally, we demonstrate that the levels of platelet‐derived 20‐HETE decline with age and that this parallels with reduced impact of platelets on β cell function. Our findings identify an unexpected function of platelets in the regulation of insulin secretion and glucose metabolism, which promotes metabolic fitness in young individuals.

Abstract Cancers represent complex autonomous systems, displaying self‐sufficiency in growth signaling. Autonomous growth is fueled by a cancer cell's ability to “secrete‐and‐sense” growth factors (GFs): a poorly understood phenomenon. Using an integrated computational and experimental approach, here we dissect the impact of a feedback‐coupled GTPase circuit within the secretory pathway that imparts secretion‐coupled autonomy. The circuit is assembled when the Ras‐superfamily monomeric GTPase Arf1, and the heterotrimeric GTPase Giαβγ and their corresponding GAPs and GEFs are coupled by GIV/Girdin, a protein that is known to fuel aggressive traits in diverse cancers. One forward and two key negative feedback loops within the circuit create closed‐loop control, allow the two GTPases to coregulate each other, and convert the expected switch‐like behavior of Arf1‐dependent secretion into an unexpected dose–response alignment behavior of sensing and secretion. Such behavior translates into cell survival that is self‐sustained by stimulus‐proportionate secretion. Proteomic studies and protein–protein interaction network analyses pinpoint GFs (e.g., the epidermal GF) as key stimuli for such self‐sustenance. Findings highlight how the enhanced coupling of two biological switches in cancer cells is critical for multiscale feedback control to achieve secretion‐coupled autonomy of growth factors.

Abstract Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a genetically and clinically heterogeneous disorder characterized by bone fragility and reduced bone mass generally caused by defects in type I collagen structure or defects in proteins interacting with collagen processing. We identified a homozygous missense mutation in SEC16B in a child with vertebral fractures, leg bowing, short stature, muscular hypotonia, and bone densitometric and histomorphometric features in keeping with OI with distinct ultrastructural features. In line with the putative function of SEC16B as a regulator of trafficking between the ER and the Golgi complex, we showed that patient fibroblasts accumulated type I procollagen in the ER and exhibited a general trafficking defect at the level of the ER. Consequently, patient fibroblasts exhibited ER stress, enhanced autophagosome formation, and higher levels of apoptosis. Transfection of wild‐type SEC16B into patient cells rescued the collagen trafficking. Mechanistically, we show that the defect is a consequence of reduced SEC16B expression, rather than due to alterations in protein function. These data suggest SEC16B as a recessive candidate gene for OI.

Considering the extensive applications of turning and facing operations in mechanical engineering manufacturing, the energy consumption of machining equipment has emerged as a significant concern in the manufacturing industries, such as aerospace and automotive. This article focuses on establishing a predictive model and optimizing energy consumption for facing and turning operations on two types of steel, namely, AISI 1038 and AISI 4142, using two different cutting tools. The experiments were planned using Taguchi's L16 orthogonal array, and the coefficients of the predictive model were determined through a linear regression approach. Additionally, a genetic algorithm (GA) with two distinct selection techniques was employed to optimize the three main variables: cutting depth, cutting speed, and feed rate, all aimed at reducing energy consumption. The results of this study show that the selection method used in GA significantly affects convergence toward the optimal solution, while the choice of cutting tool has a considerable impact on energy usage. Moreover, the variation in the effect of cutting parameters on machining energy consumption is analyzed to determine which parameters contribute most to energy savings. The results underscore the importance for manufacturers of using advanced predictive and optimization tools, offering them a competitive edge by achieving economic, environmental, and performance-related benefits. This study focuses on the development of eco-friendly biobased adsorbents through a sustainable hydrothermal and freeze-drying synthesis process, utilizing cost-effective bio-sourced materials to minimize energy consumption and waste. The biobased adsorbents were elaborated using hydroxyethyl cellulose-ionic liquids and bentonite clay. The elaborated biocomposites were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy/attenuated total reflection (FTIR/ATR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray (SEM–EDX), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) and zeta potential (ZP). Structural analysis confirms the intercalation and incorporation of HEC-ILs polymeric chains into Be-Na matrix and the formation of biocomposites. The [HEC-ILs/Be-Na] composite was subsequently employed for solid-phase extraction of Co(II) by investigating the effect of pH, initial Co(II) concentrations, time, temperature, and the presence of co-existing ions (Na(I), Li(I), Mn(II), Ni(II), and Al(III)). The adsorption kinetics of Co(II) metal ions were suitably characterized using the pseudo-second-order model (with R2 > 0.99). Furthermore, the adsorption isotherms conformed to the Langmuir model (with R2 > 0.97), suggesting a chemisorption process with an adsorption capacity of 69.8 mg/g. The thermodynamic study reveals that the adsorption process exhibits characteristics of spontaneity and endothermicity (ΔH° = 74.197 kJ mol−1, ΔG° < 0 kJ mol−1). The proposed mechanism for Co(II) adsorption on the developed biocomposite involves electrostatic interactions, ion exchange, and anion-π interactions. Arsenic (As) threatens plant growth and human health because its harmful effects are intensified by its persistent presence in the ecosystem. The absorption of As from the contaminated soil leads to accumulation in grains of food crops posing a serious threat to human health. High concentration of As hindered essential physio-biochemical processes of plants that ultimately diminish the growth and yield of crops. Therefore; a pot study was designed to assess synergistic effect of silicon (Si) and salicylic acid (SA) (control-Ck, 4.0 mM Si, 150 µM SA, 4.0 mM Si + 150 µM SA) in mitigating the adversities of As stress in wheat seedlings exposed to As stress (0, and 100 μM). Wheat seedlings exposed to As showed a significant decline in morphological attributes as well as photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a, b and carotenoids). However; foliar application of Si and SA considerably increased morphological parameters and leaf photosynthetic pigments under As stress. The imposition of As resulted in enhance accumulation of hydrogen peroxide, MDA, and electrolyte leakage, increased activities of enzymatic antioxidants (superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and ascorbate peroxidase and catalase) and an elevated accumulation of essential organic osmolytes (free proline, soluble protein, total soluble sugar, total phenolics) in leaves of wheat seedlings. Furthermore, the application of Si + SA resulted in a remarkable increase in the activities of enzymatic antioxidants and accumulation of organic osmolytes. Simultaneously, it reduced the concentration of hydrogen peroxide, MDA, and electrolyte leakage in As-stress wheat seedlings. Under As-stress, sole and combined application of Si and SA caused a significant reduction in arsenic concentration while enhance Si contents in root and shoot of wheat seedlings. In conclusion, synergistic interaction between Si and SA could alleviate the negative impact of As by enhancing the antioxidant defense system, photosynthetic pigments, facilitating osmotic adjustment, and reducing the lipid peroxidation in maize seedlings. The current findings suggest that the combined exogenous application of Si and SA represent a promising approach for promoting the successful cultivation of wheat in As contaminated soil. This article presents an innovative predictive maintenance for grinding mills, aiming to enhance operational efficiency and minimize downtime. Leveraging advancements in data analytics and IoT sensor technologies, the approach integrates vibration signal forecasting, LSTM-based fast Fourier transform (FFT) analysis, and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to detect faults early on. The method involves creating LSTM models to forecast vibration signals based on historical data and using FFT analysis to identify fault frequencies associated with the grinding process. Additionally, techniques such as Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs), short-time Fourier transform (STFT), and continuous wavelet transform (CWT) are employed for spectrogram extraction, providing valuable insights into machinery conditions. Validation on real-world datasets with 99.95% of accuracy with 1 in AUC-ROC, showcases the robust predictive performance of the model and has reached 99.96% of accuracy for 16 classes with an AUC-ROC of 1 using CWRU dataset, surpassing existing approaches and demonstrating its potential for proactive maintenance across various industries beyond mining. Orobanche crenata is a root holoparasite that depends on its host for nutritional requirements. The shikimate pathway that metabolizes about 30% of the assimilated carbon in photosynthetic plants plays a role in host-parasite relationships. Aromatic amino acids (AAAs) and phenolic acids are derived from the shikimate pathway and serve as precursors of a wide number of primary and secondary metabolites. The effects of the O. crenata parasite on the phenolic acid and AAA profiles of two faba bean varieties and the differences of these compounds between the host organs and attached parasite at infestation stages were studied. Hosts and attached parasites were collected and divided, depending on the stage of parasite development, into four stages. The results revealed that phenolic acids and free AAAs tended to increase in parasitized roots compared to those of healthy roots, and the greatest increase in phenolic contents occurred at the first infestation stage. Syringic acid was observed to be unique to the parasite. Profiles of phenolic acids and AAAs were changed during the developmental stages of the parasite and differed from those of its host. Caffeic in the parasite reached more than 100 times that in Nubaria 4 host roots at the fourth infestation stage. Free phenylalanine in the parasite ranged between 2.2 and 5.5 times its level in host roots at all infestation stages. This study provides much evidence that indicates O. crenata is able to self-regulate its phenolic and AAA metabolites during its developmental stages, which differ from those of its host. Different oncologists make their own decisions about the detection and classification of the type of ovarian cancer from histopathological whole slide images. However, it is necessary to have an automated system that is more accurate and standardized for decision-making, which is essential for early detection of ovarian cancer. To help doctors, an automated detection and classification of ovarian cancer system is proposed. This model starts by extracting the main features from the histopathology images based on the ResNet-50 model to detect and classify the cancer. Then, recursive feature elimination based on a decision tree is introduced to remove unnecessary features extracted during the feature extraction process. Adam optimizers were implemented to optimize the network's weights during training data. Finally, the advantages of combining deep learning and fuzzy logic are combined to classify the images of ovarian cancer. The dataset consists of 288 hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stained whole slides with clinical information from 78 patients. H&E-stained Whole Slide Images (WSIs), including 162 effective and 126 invalid WSIs were obtained from different tissue blocks of post-treatment specimens. Experimental results can diagnose ovarian cancer with a potential accuracy of 98.99%, sensitivity of 99%, specificity of 98.96%, and F1-score of 98.99%. Purpose: To evaluate the ability of the Intravoxel Incoherent Motion (IVIM) and monoexponentially ADC in renal allograft function in the early and late phases of transplantation, and to predict their effectiveness in discrimination of the graft pathology. Methods: This is a prospective study included participants scanned with quantitative diffusion and perfusion sequences on a 3-T MR scanner (Philips, Ingenia); the ADC and IVIM parameters; were calculated. Correlations and regression analysis with the eGFR, transplantation periods, and pathology were assessed. Results: This study included 105 renal allograft recipients (85 males, and 20 females with mean age = 32.4 ± 11.9 years and age range = 22–61 years). There was a significant positive correlation between the whole parameters of the ADC and IVIM with eGFR however, the cortical parameters showed higher significant correlation coefficients (p < 0.001). Regression analysis revealed the most significant model can predict eGFR groups included cortical pseudo diffusion (D*) and cortical ADC (p < 0.001). In graft dysfunction eGFR was 61.5 ml/min and normal graft was 64 ml/min. This model demonstrates a high performance of an AUC 96% [0.93–0.97]. In the late transplantation, there is a higher correlation with D* compared to ADC, p-values = 0.001. Conclusion: IVIM and ADC Values are significant biomarkers for renal allograft function assessment, cortical ADC, and D* had the highest performance even in situations with mild impairment that is not affect the eGFR yet as cases of proteinuria with normal eGFR. Introduction: Tracheal resection anastomosis has been established as the definitive surgery for high grade postintubation subglottic stenosis. To achieve a relaxed tension-free anastomosis, various laryngeal release techniques were discussed in literature with potential effect on postoperative swallowing dysfunction. This study aims to compare the difference in swallowing outcomes following two methods of infrahyoid laryngeal release: with and without fracture of the superior thyroid horns. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was carried out at our tertiary referral hospitals including cases with grade III and IV subglottic stenosis treated by partial crico-tracheal resection with thyro-tracheal anastomosis. The patients were divided into two groups according to the method used in laryngeal release; mini infrahyoid release (group A) or infrahyoid full release (group B) where full means with fracture of the superior thyroid horn bilaterally while mini means their preservation. Swallowing assessment preoperatively and postoperatively was done by comparing swallowing dysfunction symptoms, Gugging swallowing screen (GUSS) score and fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) according to penetration aspiration scale (PAS). Results: A total of 71 patients were included; 46 in Group A and 25 in Group B. Clinical swallowing evaluation one week postoperatively showed statistically significant difference between the two groups being affected in 80.04% and 100% of patients in group A and B, respectively. The mean postoperative GUSS were 18 ± 1.32 in group A patients in comparison to 8.84 ± 5.18 in group B (p-value < 0.001). With FEES assessment, group A had full improvement of their swallowing abilities one month after the surgery while patients in group B had significantly lower PAS scores. Unfavourable scores for both the GUSS test and PAS were associated with increasing patients' age in group B. Conclusion: In this retrospective cohort study, cases with mini infrahyoid laryngeal release had significantly better swallowing outcomes and full resolution of dysphagia in comparison to full laryngeal release. Also, full laryngeal release is associated with delayed resolution of swallowing difficulty in older patients. This point should be considered during preoperative patient selection and counselling. In this paper, we consider the frictional contact model between a piezoelectric body and an electrically conductive foundation. This contact is described by a reduced normal compliance law. To address this problem, we establish a mixed variational formulation and prove the existence of a unique solution. Moreover, we present an efficient algorithm for approximating the weak solution for the contact problem, taking into account both friction and electrical contact conditions. There are global challenges in addressing the oil spill treatment. Nanofiber has become a great potential in the oil spill cleaning process because of the environmental friendliness, high efficiency, low cost, and stability of the obtained nanofiber mats. This study presents a novel composite fabricated from cellulose acetate (CA) and cellulose nitrate (CN) nanofibers with the incorporation of carbon black (CA-CN/CB) for efficient oil removal. This nanofiber composite was fabricated in one-step electrospinning of 10% CA and CN solution with different concentrations of carbon black (CB). The morphology and fiber diameter of the CA-CN/CB nanofiber composite were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and they appeared to be smooth, uniform fibers without beads. The average fiber diameter was in nano-meter size and increased with the increasing CB amount in the composite, ranging from 327 to 755 nm. The FTIR results indicated the presence of CA and CN as characteristic peaks of C = O for CA and O-NO2 for CN. The nanofibers mats of the CA-CN, CA-CN/CB0.7, CA-CN/CB1.5, and CA-CN/CB2.2 composites had Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area of 15.29, 38.40, 4.08, and 6.17 m2 g−1, respectively. Under optimal conditions, CA-CN/CB nanofiber mats absorb more than their weight oil in just 30 min. The adsorption result showed that loading 1.5% of CB to CA-CN mats (CA-CN/CB1.5) was more favorable for oil adsorption. The CA-CN/CB1.5 nanofiber showed its reusability for oil adsorption. The Freundlich isotherm model was the most appropriate model among other isotherm models, including Langmuir and Temkin, with a value of correlation coefficient (R2) equal to or closer to unity, and this result was confirmed by the data obtained from studying different error function models. This work aimed to introduce a new technique for improving sustainable biodiesel from Microchloropsis salina by examining the impact of various nitrogen sources, salt stress, and carbon enrichment, individually or in combination, to determine the best treatment conditions for biomass and lipid productivity as well as biodiesel quality. M. salina effectively utilizes nitrate (NaNO3 and KNO3) and organic nitrogen (especially yeast extract and glycine) but not ammonium for growth. The highest biomass and lipid productivity were observed on yeast extract (0.11 g L−1 day−1 and 52.11 μgmL−1 day−1, respectively). Lipid production enhanced by 80% under 300 mM of NaCl, while growth increased only by 30%. Acetate could not be used to cultivate the alga mixotrophically; only glucose and glycerol were effective. The ideal organic carbon supply values for glucose and glycerol were 3 g L−1 and 2 g L−1, respectively. Nutrition by 2 g L−1 glycerol promoted biomass and lipid productivities by 62% and 95%, respectively, while biomass productivity was reduced by 16% under combined and lipid productivity increased by 80%. Starch-g-poly(acrylic acid)/Pterocladia capillacea–derived activated carbon (St-g-P(AA)/P-AC) composites were prepared via aqueous solution graft copolymerization using starch, acrylic acid, and activated carbon of red alga Pterocladia capillacea (0–10%) with N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide crosslinker and ammonium persulfate (NH4)2S2O8 initiator. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) were used to characterize St-g-P(AA)/P-AC composites. Additionally, St-g-P(AA)/P-AC composites were investigated for methylene blue (MB) dye removal from water. The impact of the beginning concentration of MB dye, temperature, pH, and adsorption time on MB dye removal was examined. The maximum adsorption capacity obtained at pH 8 was 496.29 mg/g at 0.02 mg/L composites dose and 100 mg/L MB dye. The properties of adsorption were studied by the adsorption isotherm, kinetic, and thermodynamic models. The pseudo-first-order and Freundlich isotherm models demonstrated the kinetics and equilibrium adsorptions data, respectively. The maximum monolayer capacity (qm) was 1428.57 mg/g from Langmuir isotherm. Thermodynamic parameters indicated that the MB dye adsorption is exothermic physisorption and spontaneous. In this study, a novel approach for the environmentally conscious extraction of titanium dioxide from ilmenite ore while limiting the environmental impact and enhancing the advantage from an economic process. Leaching conditions were tested with different acids for effective separation of the TiO2 and were optimized concerning different experimental parameters. TiO2 and TiO2NPs were characterized using with different tools. Catechol polyurethane foam immobilized with TiO2NPs was prepared and its antimicrobial action was tested against Gram-negative bacterium E. coli, Gram-positive bacterium B. cereus, and fungus A. niger. CAT-PUF /TiO2NPs showed antimicrobial effect against E. coli, B. cereus, and A. niger with inhibition zones of 27 ± 0.14, 12 ± 0.14, and 22 ± 0.06 mm, respectively. Incorporating bioinformatics, this research contributes to the burgeoning field of nanotechnology-enabled antimicrobial materials, offering insights into the potential applications of CAT-PUF/TiO2NPs in combating microbial threats. Through bio-informatics tools, the potential toxicity of the synthesized nanoparticles was assessed, providing valuable insights into their safety profile and environmental impact. Furthermore, simulating the binding affinity between the nanoparticles and target biomolecules, such as cell membrane proteins or enzyme receptors, this aspect of the research sheds light on the mechanistic underpinnings of their antimicrobial efficacy. The study presents an investigation into the structural, morphological, and optical properties of nano-sized ZnO particles synthesized via the sol–gel method. We conducted a comprehensive examination of various operating parameters, including the choice of additive (citric or acetic acid) and the drying method. Our results indicate that the addition of acetic acid and drying with low-power microwave radiation yield high-quality nanoparticles. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that the nanoparticles crystallize in the Würtzite hexagonal phase, even at high concentrations of acetic acid, without any indication of secondary phases or clusters, confirming the single-phase nature of the samples. Crystal structure analysis, performed using X-ray peak broadening and Williamson-Hall analysis, elucidated the contributions of crystallite size and lattice deformation to the broadening of peaks in the nanoparticles. Furthermore, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy measurements were employed to evaluate the chemical composition and phonon properties of the particles. Scanning Electron Microscopy images demonstrated a change in shape and size of the zinc oxide nanoparticles with increasing acetic acid concentration. The current study investigated how well an aqueous extract of Rubia cordifolia and a Bacillus amyloliquefaciens bacterium strain (DW6 OR083409) protected Vigna unguiculata L. plants from Fusarium oxysporum infection. In vitro study revealed that Rubia cordifolia aqueous extracts at 10% and 30% did not exhibit antifungal activity against F. oxysporum isolate, likewise no inhibition towards F. oxysporum as a presence of B. amyloliquefaciens DW6. Molecular identification characteristics confirmed the fungal pathogen being F. oxysporum AWEKA, based on the 18s rRNA sequence. B. amyloliquefaciens was found to produce indole-3-acetic acid, gibberellic acid, and hydrogen cyanide at concentrations being 203.67 ± 5.6, 335.6 ± 7.5, and 218 ± 6.4 µg/ml, respectively. In vivo, the growth of plants enhanced the induced resistance of cowpea plants against F. oxysporum during treatments with the biotic agents. The activity of defense-related enzymes was also enhanced, where Bacillus culture showed the highest increase, followed by the R. cordifolia at 30% extract and bacterial supernatant, respectively. SEM investigation of infected cowpea roots revealed notable differences in xylem vessels, including tylose formation and obstruction of vessels. Plasmolysis of parenchymal cells and hydrolysis of some cells were observed following the fungicide treatment. Both Bacillus amyloliquefaciens DW6 and the 30% aqueous extract of R. cordifolia proved effective in enhancing the induced resistance of cowpea against F. oxysporum, leading to a reduction in the damage caused by Fusarium root infection. Millions of individuals worldwide, across all age groups, suffer from the widespread health issue of gastric ulcers. In many experiments, cilostazol (Cls), a phosphodiesterase-3 inhibitor, was recently shown to have anti-ulcer activity. Notably, Cls increases the expression and transcriptional activity of PPAR-γ in vitro and in vivo. This study aimed to evaluate the protective effect of Cls against ethanol-induced gastric ulcers and clarify the possible underlying mechanisms with an emphasis on the role of PPAR-γ. Male albino rats were treated with ethanol to induce gastric ulcers, or they were pretreated with Cls, omeprazole (Omp), GW9662, or Cls + GW9662 for 14 consecutive days before receiving ethanol. Cls protects against ethanol-induced gastric ulcers. Cls treatment significantly reduced ethanol-induced upregulation of the pro-inflammatory markers (IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, and NF-κB), MDA (a marker of lipid peroxidation), and caspase-3 and cleaved caspase-3 (apoptotic markers). On the other hand, Cls treatment counteracted ethanol-induced downregulation of PPAR-γ, pErk-1, HO-1 and GSH (antioxidant markers), PECAM-1 and NO (healing markers), and Bcl-2 (antiapoptotic marker). However, when combined with GW9662, a potent antagonist of PPAR-γ, Cls loses its effects. Yeast feed additives present a natural approach for mitigating ruminal greenhouse gases (GHG) in an environmentally sustainable manner. This study aimed to isolate yeast strains from ruminal fluids capable of reducing GHG from Aflatoxin (AFB1) contaminated diets. Two isolates of Pichia manchuria (FFNLYFC1 and FFNLYFC2) were isolated and identified from the ruminal contents of dairy Zaraibi goats. An in vitro gas production assay was conducted to evaluate the impact of the yeast supplementations on a basal diet contaminated with AFB1 or not. The treatments were control (-AFB1; basal diet without supplements), control with AFB1 contamination (+ AFB1; basal diet containing 20 ppb AFB1), and yeast-supplemented diets (basal diet supplemented with Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and three treatments of P. manchuria [FFNLYFC1, FFNLYFC2, and their mixture at 1:1 ratio (Mix)]. High biological components were detected in abundance of both FFNLYFC1, FFNLYFC2 filtrates (e.g., diisooctyl phthalate). The Mix and FFNLYFC2 of P. manchuria reduced (P < 0.05) methane by 23.5 and 20.8%, respectively, while only Mix inhibited carbon dioxide by 44% compared to the + AFB1 diet. All yeast diets improved (P < 0.05) ammonia concentration, total protozoal and Entodinium spp. counts compared to + AFB1 diet. The Mix exhibited higher (P < 0.05) values of ruminal degraded cellulose, total short-chain fatty acids, acetate and propionate compared to the individual isolates diets. The results suggest synergistic interactions among P. manshurica isolates, leading to enhanced ruminal fermentation and reduced GHG emissions while alleviating the adverse effects of AFB1. The natural radionuclides in ancient El-Qasr village located in the El-Dakhla oasis (EDO), Egypt's Western Desert were measured using gamma-ray spectrometry equipped with a NaI (Tl) detector. The findings indicate that the samples' mean activity concentrations were 18.61 ± 1.02, 16.67 ± 0.9, and 137.67 ± 6.9 Bq kg−1 for 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K, respectively. The values of Raeq, D, AED, Hex, Hin, Iγ, and ELCR for the samples ranged anywhere from 34.1 to 83.9 Bq kg−1, 15.7 to 37 nGy h−1, 19.26 to 45.384 Sv y−1, 0.09 to 0.23, 0.12 to 0.23, 0.25 to 0.59, and 6.74E−05 to 1.59E−04, respectively. These values are significantly lower than the international limit of 370 Bq kg−1 for Raeq, 59 nGy h−1 for D, 70 Sv y−1 for AED, 1 for Hex and Hin, 2 for Iγ, and 29E−03 for ELCR. According to the obtained data, none of the samples seemed to be a significant risk when it came to radiation exposure. Accurate racism classification is crucial on social media, where racist and discriminatory content can harm individuals and society. Automated racism detection requires gathering and annotating a wide range of diverse and representative data as an essential source of information for the system. However, this task proves to be highly demanding in both time and resources, resulting in a significantly costly process. Moreover, racism can appear differently across languages because of the distinct cultural subtleties and vocabularies linked to each language. This necessitates having information resources in native languages to effectively detect racism, which further complicates constructing a database explicitly designed for identifying racism on social media platforms. In this study, an automated data annotation system for racism classification is presented, utilizing self-training and a combination of the Sentence-BERT (SBERT) transformers-based model for data representation and a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model. The system aids in the creation of a multilingual racism dataset consisting of 26,866 instances gathered from Facebook and Twitter. This is achieved through a self-training process that utilizes a labeled subset of the dataset to annotate the remaining unlabeled data. The study examines the impact of self-training on the system's performance, revealing significant enhancements in model effectiveness. Especially for the English dataset, the system achieves a noteworthy accuracy rate of 92.53% and an F-score of 88.26%. The French dataset reaches an accuracy of 93.64% and an F-score of 92.68%. Similarly, for the Arabic dataset, the accuracy reaches 91.03%, accompanied by an F-score value of 92.15%. Argan (Argania spinosa (L.) Skeels) is a difficult plant to propagate. In recent years, research has been performed to establish micropropagation systems for argan. The researches aiming at optimizing existing techniques or developing new protocols must consider their costs. Two methods have been reported to produce true-to-type argan plants: microcuttings and micrografting. This paper presents an economic analysis of vitroplant production to determine expenses associated with these two regeneration systems. The cost components included were chemicals, consumables, lab operations, salaries and glassware, but buildings and equipment were not included. There was a small variation between the two systems, which might be significant in large-scale production. In fact, the production unit cost of a plantlet obtained through microcuttings was assessed at US$ 9.04, whereas the cost of a micrografted plant was estimated at US$ 9.13. In microcuttings, losses caused by rooting recalcitrance greatly increased production costs. In micrografting, the work hours required by skilled employees, combined with an additional stage of rootstock preparation, raised the production cost. This study represents the first attempt to estimate the production cost of argan micropropagation to encourage scientists and industry to consider production costs in their future investigations. The findings of this study also provide commercial laboratories looking to invest in argan micropropagation with an idea of which regeneration method to use, the funds to invest and expenses, the losses experienced at each step, and the approximate overall cost to consider.Key message: The production costs of argan plantlets obtained by microcuttings and micrografting were determined and compared. Purpose: This study aimed to assess the effect of Sargassum vulgare extracts (SVE) on tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum L.) exposed to salinity stress. Methods: We evaluated the impact of SVE concentrations (2%, 5%, and 10%) prepared by the water extraction method using fresh material on the morphophysiological and biochemical parameters of tomato seedlings subjected to salinity (50 mM NaCl). Results: Our results showed that salinity reduced tomato plant growth compared to the control. However, supplementing stressed plants with lower SVE concentrations, particularly 2%, increased plant height, biomass, and chlorophyll content by 32.24%, 38%, and 55%, respectively, compared to stressed plants without SVE application (positive control). Moreover, 2% of SVE decreased hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde levels by 17.24% and 31.54%, respectively. There was also an increase of 23.89%, 133.34%, and 16.36% in the activity of the antioxidant enzymes: glutathione S-transferase (GST), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) with treatments of 2%, 5%, and 10% of SVE, respectively, compared to the positive control. Additionally, SVE treatment enhanced indole acetic acid, polyphenols, flavonoids, soluble sugars, and amino acid content. Furthermore, 2% of SVE increased the activities of enzymes involved in carbon and nitrogen metabolism: phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC), malate dehydrogenase (NAD-MDH), and aspartate aminotransferase (AAT) by 42.47%, 186.23%, and 4.6%, respectively; and glutamine synthase (GS) and glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) by 185.71% and 0.75%, respectively, in the case of treatment with 10% SVE. This study utilized a dataset comprising 3023 lactation records for Friesian cows, 596 records for Native cows (Baladi), and 1189 records for Crossbred cows spanning from 1994 to 2015. The objective was to estimate and assess genetic and phenotypic parameters and breeding values for 305-day milk yield (305-DMY), lactation period (LP), calving interval (CI), and days open (DO) within the Egyptian dairy context. The motivation for this research stemmed from the need to understand the genetic potential of different cattle genotypes in Egypt and identify opportunities for enhancing dairy production. Data were analyzed using the linear mixed model least squares and maximum likelihood (LSMLMW) and multiple-trait derivative-free restricted maximum likelihood (MTDFREML) programs. The analytical model included fixed effects such as season and year of calving, parity, and genotype groups, while random effects included animal and error. Unadjusted means for 305-DMY, LP, CI, and DO were calculated for each genotype group. Genotype groups significantly impacted all studied traits. Heritability estimates varied across genotype groups, with higher estimates observed in Crossbred (0.32, 0.26, 0.25, 0.23) and Native cows (0.26, 0.28, 0.28) compared to Friesian cows (0.24, 0.22, 0.16, 0.17) for productive and reproductive traits, respectively. Genetic correlations among traits ranged from 0.10 to 0.86 for the three genotype groups, while corresponding phenotypic correlations were generally small to moderate and positive. Regarding breeding values, the accuracy estimates suggested that both sires and cows could contribute to genetic improvement. This study aimed to investigate the effect of diet supplementation with a symbiotic (SY), bee pollen (BP), honey bee (HB), date palm pollen (DPP) and their mixture (MIX) on female rabbit productive and reproductive performances under desert hot climates. Seventy-two Californian does of 5 months age and average body weight of 3250 ± 78.2 g were randomly allotted into six groups, each of 12 does. All does orally receive 3 ml distilled water for 10 days before mating and 28 days during pregnancy. Treatments were repeated for four consecutive parities. The first group served as control (C) given distilled water only, however the second, third, fourth and fifth groups were supplemented with 3 ml distilled water containing 0.2 ml SY, 200 mg DPP, 200 mg BP, 0.2 ml HB/doe per day, respectively. While, the sixth group does were given all previous ingredients (MIX). Sexual receptivity rate, fertility rate, kindling rate, and newborn traits were recorded. Also, maternal feed intake, feed conversion ratio, and digestibility coefficients of nutrients were recorded. Does in all groups were artificially inseminated with 0.5 ml of fresh heterospermic semen of 15 fertile bucks extended in Tris at 806–1006 sperm/ml. Treatment increased maternal body weight and daily gain with highest values (P < 0.05) in BP, SY, and MIX does. All treatments enhanced feed intake and feed conversion ratio (FCR) compared with control. Number services per conception decreased (P < 0.01), while litter size and weight and survival at birth and weaning increased (P < 0.01) in treated than control does. Treated does produced more milk than control. Digestibility coefficients of all nutrients were improved (P < 0.01) in treated does. In conclusion, supporting rabbit does pre- and during pregnancy with diets supplemented with a mixture of honey bee, date palm pollen, bee pollen, and synbiotic improves the productive and reproductive performances of rabbit does and their offspring. Semiconductors, with their exceptional properties, have diverse applications across fields such as photovoltaics, sensing, and catalysis. In the present study, nickel pyro-vanadate compounds of high purity and homogeneity, with the chemical formula A2NiV2O7 (where A = Na, Ag), were synthesized under precisely controlled stoichiometric conditions. The primary focus is to investigate the optical and electronic properties of these compounds using a combination of experimental techniques and theoretical modeling. Initially, insights into the chemical structure and morphology of the synthesized semiconductor were obtained through powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A2NiV2O7 were found to be homogeneous, crystalline in nature, and isotypic with Κ2CoV2O7, exhibiting alternating layers of NiV2O7 and Ag/Na. Moreover, absorption spectra obtained from UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) showed direct optical bandgaps of 1.83 eV for Na2NiV2O7 and 1.92 eV for Ag2NiV2O7, affirming their semiconductor properties. Further characterization was performed using density functional theory (DFT) and hybrid-DFT methods. These advanced techniques provide detailed understanding of the electronic structure and properties across different sodium–silver ratios. The computed electronic structures demonstrate the separation of the conduction band (CB) and valence band (VB) around the Fermi level, with bandgaps of 0.44 eV and 1.76 eV for Na2NiV2O7, and 0.56 eV and 1.60 eV for Ag2NiV2O7, as determined using the Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof (PBE) and DFT+U methods, respectively. In this work, the elastic properties of two tellurite glass series 80TeO2-(20−x)WO3-xBi2O3 (80TeWBi) and 70TeO2-(30−x)WO3-xBi2O3 (70TeWBi) (where x = 0 mol.%, 5 mol.%, and 10 mol.%) were quantitatively analyzed and predicted. Many structural and compositional parameters, including the density of network bonds, mean cross-link density, average bond-stretching force constant, total packing density, and dissociation energy per unit volume, were calculated using bond compression (BC), ring deformation (RD), and Makishima–Mackenzie (M–M) models. These parameters were correlated with experimental elastic properties to explore the structural role of WO3 and Bi2O3 in the tellurite network. It was found that WO3 enters the tellurite network of Bi2O3-free 80TeO2-20WO3 and 70TeO2-30WO3 glasses as a network former. This stiffened the structure through the formation of WO4 tetrahedral units, WO6 octahedral units, and Te–O–W linkages. As a result, the theoretical bulk modules (Kbc) increased from 73.23 GPa to 83.90 GPa whereas the theoretical Poisson's ratio decreased from 0.235 to 0.225 with increasing WO3 mol.%. Meanwhile, Bi2O3 enters the network of TeO2-WO3-Bi2O3 glasses as a network modifier. This weakens the glass structure and results in the transformation of some TeO4 trigonal bipyramids into TeO3 trigonal pyramids by breaking the Te–O–W linkages and creating non-bridging oxygen atoms. The Kepler Optimisation Algorithm (KOA) is a recently proposed algorithm that is inspired by Kepler’s laws to predict the positions and velocities of planets at a given time. However, although promising, KOA can encounter challenges such as convergence to sub-optimal solutions or slow convergence speed. This paper proposes an improvement to KOA by integrating chaotic maps to solve complex engineering problems. The improved algorithm, named Chaotic Kepler Optimization Algorithm (CKOA), is characterized by a better ability to avoid local minima and to reach globally optimal solutions thanks to a dynamic diversification strategy based on chaotic maps. To confirm the effectiveness of the suggested approach, in-depth statistical analyses were carried out using the CEC2020 and CEC2022 benchmarks. These analyses included mean and standard deviation of fitness, convergence curves, Wilcoxon tests, as well as population diversity assessments. The experimental results, which compare CKOA not only to the original KOA but also to eight other recent optimizers, show that the proposed algorithm performs better in terms of convergence speed and solution quality. In addition, CKOA has been successfully tested on three complex engineering problems, confirming its robustness and practical effectiveness. These results make CKOA a powerful optimisation tool in a variety of complex real-world contexts. Purpose: Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is an integral cytokine for the modulation of both innate and adaptive immunity and is involved in the pathogenesis of various cancers. However, conflicting findings on the relationship between MIF polymorphisms and breast cancer (BC) have been reported in earlier research. We investigated the clinical value of serum MIF levels and the association between MIF rs1049829 and rs755622 variants with their serum levels and propensity to develop BC. Methods: A total of 133 treatment-naïve Egyptian BC females and 126 apparently healthy controls were matriculated in this case–control study. The serum MIF protein levels were quantified by ELISA, whereas the genotyping was executed utilizing the TaqMan® allelic discrimination assay. Results: A significant increase in the serum MIF level in BC cases was observed in comparison to control subjects (P < 0.0001), with a diagnostic potential to discriminate BC with 92.5% sensitivity and 73.7% specificity at a cut-off value > 9.47 ng/mL. Besides, a significant difference in serum MIF level was observed in BC cases with progesterone receptor (PR) negativity compared to those with PR positivity (P = 0.046). Moreover, a significant association was depicted between the rs1049829 variant of MIF gene and the protective effect against BC meanwhile the rs755622 variant demonstrated no significant link with BC risk. Conclusions: This study revealed that serum MIF levels may be regarded as a promising serum tumor marker for BC. The use of agricultural waste in animal production has gained global interest. An eight-week trial was conducted to investigate the impacts of adding ethanolic guava leaf extract (GLE) as a feed supplement on the growth, feed utilization, immune response, nutrient digestibility, redox regulation, and blood health of growing rabbits. Ninety weaned growing rabbits were randomly assigned to three groups. The first group was fed a basal diet (GLE0), while the other two groups were fed the control diet fortified with 15 mg (GLE15) or 20 mg (GLE20) of GLE per kg of diet for 8 weeks. The HPLC analysis of GLE exhibited the presence of gallic acid, ferulic acid, catechin, and caffeic acid in significant amounts. The results indicated that final body weight, daily body weight, daily feed intake and nutrient digestibility were significantly higher in the GLE-treated groups compared to the un-treated group (p < 0.05). Dietary supplementation of GLE significantly reduced lipid contents including triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and VLDL (P < 0.05), with the most significant results observed when adding 20 mg/kg to the diet. AST and ALT levels as well as cortisol hormone in rabbits fed GLE were lower than those in the GLE0 group (P < 0.05). Immunoglobulins (IgG and IgA), antioxidant biomarkers (SOD and TAC) and T3 hormone were significantly improved by GLE supplementation (P < 0.001). Rabbits fed with GLE had lower levels of ROS and MDA compared to those in the GLE0 group (P < 0.001). Moreover, the hepatic and intestinal architectures were maintained in all rabbits fed diets with GLE. The results suggest that GLE supplementation (20 mg/kg diet) in fattening rabbit diets could efficiently improve growth, health status, blood physiology, antioxidant capacity and tissue histology. The mechanism by which an organism can adapt to subtle environmental changes is predicated on modifications to biochemical processes within the cellular metabolism in response to such changes. Changes in these processes have the potential to induce alterations in cellular structures and tissue organization, as well as establish a causal link between fluctuations in these parameters and stressors exposure. This investigation's main goal and innovation is to evaluate the environmental stress indicators in the aquatic ecosystem of Lake Qarun. Pesticide residues in freshwater fish should be the primary focus of evaluation of environmental stressor concentrations, since they serve as bioindicators at different times and places on a spatiotemporal scale. A thorough analysis of suggestive biochemical biomarker reactions should also be conducted. The effects of environmental stressors, specifically pesticide contamination in Qarun Lake, have been observed and investigated in relation to two fish species: Solea aejabtiaca and Oreochronis niloticus. The results of a hazard assessment conducted at six sampling sites using spatio-temporal data revealed elevated mean values for the pesticides, persistent organic pollutants (POPs), organochlorines, organophosphates, and pyrethroids that were detected. A multi biomarker approach facilitates a more comprehensive understanding of stress responses induced by exposure to pollutants. As a result, the activities of the biochemical biomarkers CYP-450, GST, GSH, and LDH in the blood and liver of fish samples were found to be notably elevated. The suitability of the identified variables for biomonitoring of aquatic pollution was validated, and the data unveiled variations in sensitivity among species, implying that Nile tilapia could potentially function as a bioindicator with high sensitivity. The findings were correlated with the concentrations of detrimental organochlorines, organophosphorus, and pyrethroids in the muscles and gills. The data indicates that pollutants linked to agricultural wastes, runoff, and municipal effluent may be discharged into the lake ecosystem. Consequently, to safeguard the environment, it is essential to enforce and implement policies, acts, and regulations that already exist. Assessing the effects of additional environmental stressors on aquatic ecosystems is another way in which biomarker screening with an integrative approach improves our comprehension of how toxicants impact various levels of biological organization and is particularly useful in realistic environmental exposure scenarios. The hydraulic turbocharger plays a vital role in harnessing the energy stored in brine within reverse osmosis desalination plants. To optimize the efficiency and durability of this equipment, it is crucial to develop accurate dynamic models of the turbocharger rotor. An improved understanding of rotor dynamics enables the integration of innovative technologies such as Hydraulic Energy Management Integration, effectively enhancing efficiencies in systems characterized by small capacities and high rotational speeds. This study presents a dynamic modeling methodology for the hydraulic turbocharger. The analysis involves approximating the turbocharger rotor with an equivalent finite element shaft line model. Verification of the model's natural frequency is conducted using three-dimensional finite element analysis, employing the ANSYS modal analysis module. Computational fluid dynamics is employed to evaluate the fluid forces, while the Reynolds equation is utilized to assess the journal bearing forces. The resulting model is employed to investigate the nonlinear dynamics of the rotor, examining the impact of various system parameters, including rotational speed, unbalance forces, and shaft geometrical parameters. The results highlight the significance of balancing the turbine and pump disks for optimal performance. Furthermore, the research demonstrates that increasing the shaft length reduces the rotor's threshold speed, while increasing the shaft diameter initially raises the threshold speed until it reaches a critical value. Methylmercury (MeHg) and 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzodioxin (TCDD) are potent environmental pollutants implicated in the modulation of xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes, particularly the cytochrome P450 1 family (CYP1) which is regulated by the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR). However, the co-exposure to MeHg and TCDD raises concerns about their potential combined effects, necessitating thorough investigation. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the individual and combined effects of MeHg and TCDD on AHR-regulated CYP1 enzymes in mouse extrahepatic tissues. Therefore, C57BL/6 mice were administrated with MeHg (2.5 mg/kg) in the absence and presence of TCDD (15 μg/kg) for 6 and 24 h. The AHR-regulated CYP1 mRNA and protein expression levels were measured in the heart, lung, and kidney, using RT real-time PCR and western blot, respectively. Interestingly, treatment with MeHg exhibited mainly inhibitory effect, particularly, it decreased the basal level of Cyp1a1 and Cyp1a2 mRNA and protein, and that was more evident at the 24 h time point in kidney followed by heart. Similarly, when mice were co-exposed, MeHg was able to reduce the TCDD-induced Cyp1a1 and Cyp1a2 expression, however, MeHg potentiated kidney Cyp1b1 mRNA expression, opposing the observed change on its protein level. Also, MeHg induced antioxidant NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase (NQO1) mRNA and protein in kidney, while heme-oxygenase (HO-1) mRNA was up-regulated in heart and kidney. In conclusion, this study reveals intricate interplay between MeHg and TCDD on AHR-regulated CYP1 enzymes, with interesting inhibitory effects observed that might be significant for procarcinogen metabolism. New Schiff base ligand: 4-methoxy salicaldhyde-2-2-phenyl-hydrazono acetaldehíyde prepared by facile method. The molecular structures characterized by elemental analysis and proton magnetic resonance spectra (1H-NMR spectra). This spectra at the chemical shifts (3.5–10.39 ppm) confirmed the types and the numbers of protons. The sharp melting point at the range 110–112 °C confirmed purity. New optically active metal (samarium, terbium and gadolinium) complexes of the Schiff base synthesized in a one pot reaction. Vibrational IR spectra confirmed functional groups. Scanning electron microscopy micrographs confirmed that the modified microstructure of the metal complexes differed in morphology than the ligand. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns confirmed good crystalline structure. The optically activity of the solid metal complexes confirmed from electronic absorption spectra. The UV absorbance band at the wavelength range 280–390 nm and the intense phosphorescence bands up to 830 nm enabled application in photo dynamic therapy for apoptosis cancer cells by conversion triplet oxygen in the tissues into reactive singlet oxygen. Low charge transfer energy: 2.59–2.61 eV, high molar extinction coefficients (ε) at the order of magnitude M− 1 cm− 1 and the intense phosphorescence bands reflected good photodynamic activity. Recently, nano-manufactured materials have been used to treat many diseases, such as healing wounds and other modern biological applications. This study investigates the positive effect of Punica granatum seeds extract on kidney and testicular toxicities induced by iron oxide nanoparticles. Forty mice were randomly divided into four groups; the 1st group was the control group. The 2nd group was dosed daily with PSE at 100 g per kg. The 3rd group was dosed with 10 doses of iron oxide nanoparticles at 30 mg/kg b.wt of a mouse per day, 10 times only, then this toxic substance was withdrawn for the rest of the experimental period (30 days). The 4th group was dosed with the same doses as the second and third groups. In this research, we focused on the possibility of using the positive curative effects of PSE, which were estimated at the level of blood chemistry biomarkers, as well as histological and histochemical examinations for the kidney and testis after exposure of mice to iron oxide nanoparticles. The removal of heavy metals, such as lead, from industrial wastewater is imperative due to their detrimental effects on both human health and the environment. This study delves into investigating the feasibility of employing a novel adsorbent, specifically a silica/klucel nanocomposite, for effectively extract lead from industrial effluents. The synthesis of this nanocomposite involved a simple and cost-effective method, combining silica nanoparticles with klucel. XRD, FTIR, E-SEM, Raman, and N2 gas adsorption at − 196 °C tools were employed to prospect the formation of silica/klucel nanocomposite. Outstandingly, treating 50 ml of 50 mg/l of lead with 10 mg of adsorbent exhibited rapid removal, which reached a maximum (95%) at 60 min contact time. The resulting composite demonstrated remarkable adsorption capabilities, primarily attributed to two factors: the expansive surface area of silica nanoparticles 139.1 m2/g and the porous structure provided by klucel. Through batch adsorption experiments, the nanocomposite's proficiency in removing lead ions from aqueous solutions became evident. The kinetics of the adsorption process were found to adhere closely to a pseudo-second-order model, hinting at chemical adsorption as the rate-determining step. Langmuir isotherm model revealed that lead ions tend to form a monolayer on the surface of the nanocomposite and the maximum adsorption capacity (qm) was 63.938 mg/g. Additionally, the nanocomposite, exhibited notable stability and could be reused multiple times, where 65% removal efficiency was announced until the 7th cycle without significant degradation in performance. In summary, the silica/klucel nanocomposite emerges as a promising and eco-friendly adsorbent for removing lead from industrial effluents. Its efficient performance and sustainability offer a compelling solution to combat heavy metal contamination, thereby contributing to environmental preservation and human well-being. Background: COVID-19 has significant effects on organ function, particularly on lung function and iron metabolism. Studies have shown increased levels of ferritin, an iron storage protein, in COVID-19 patients, indicating potential changes in iron utilization. Research has focused primarily on adults, with limited studies on paediatric patients and a lack of comparisons with MIS-C patients. This study aimed to assess iron status in paediatric COVID-19 patients using traditional and new biomarkers, soluble transferrin receptors (sTfR) and Reticulocyte hemoglobin equivalent (RET-He), to improve diagnosis and prognosis. Additionally, we sought to compare iron status between acute COVID-19 patients and MIS-C patients and evaluate the relationships among iron dysmetabolism, disease severity, and prognosis in paediatric patients. The study also involved monitoring iron status during and after infection to understand its impact on patient severity and prognosis. Methods: A cohort study involving 49 patients aged 1 month to 18 years was conducted at the isolation department of Mansoura University Children's Hospital. The study included 36 patients with acute COVID-19 and 13 with multisystem inflammatory syndrome of childhood (MIS-C). Diagnosis was based on PCR from a deep nasopharyngeal swab or a positive antibody test. Follow-up of survivors was conducted 3 months after recovery. Blood samples were obtained during infection and at follow-up for CBC, Ret-He, iron kinetics, and sTfR analyses. Results: Significant iron deficiency anaemia was observed in all patients during infection, with improvement after 3 months of recovery in survivors. The improvement was more obvious in MIS-C patients, with Hb and iron kinetics not significantly affected by disease severity. The STfR was significantly lower in nonsurvivors than in survivors. The ROC curve showed that a baseline sTfR ≤ 18 nmol/L was a statistically significant difference between nonsurvivors and survivors (area under the curve (AUC) = 0.810, p <.001), with 66.7% sensitivity and 82.5% specificity. Regression analysis revealed that patients with baseline sTfRs ≤ 18 nmol/L were 5.9 times more susceptible to death. Conclusion: This study revealed that COVID-19 in children caused iron deficiency anaemia, which improved within 3 months after recovery. Haemoglobin and sTfRs were identified as reliable indicators of IDA in these patients, unlike iron kinetics and RET-He. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
