This study investigated the effects of dietary supplementation with inactivated Lactobacillus plantarum for Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Three treatments, in quintuplicate, were established: a control group, fish fed a diet without additives; LP group, fish fed a diet supplemented with live probiotic; and IP group, fish fed a diet supplemented with inactivated probiotic. Final weights (49.40 ± 3.15 g) and weight gains (38.20 ± 3.23 g) were increased in tilapia in the IP group. Feed conversion (1.32 ± 0.04) decreased significantly in the IP group. Haemato-biochemical parameters were significantly influenced by dietary supplementation. Erythrocyte count (262.74 ± 69.28 × 106 μL−1) was significantly low, while albumin (1.79 ± 1.12 g dL−1) and cholesterol (254.14 ± 98.49 mg dL−1) were high in the control group. Dietary supplementation modified the tilapia microbiome. Rhodobacter was abundant in fish intestines from the control and IP groups. Phreatobacter was abundant in the IP and LP groups, while Aurantimicrobium and Bosea were abundant in the LP group. Oleic acid (C18:1n9) was significantly increased in the LP (3.25 ± 0.49%) and IP (3.02 ± 0.30%) groups. Hexadecatrienoic acid (C16:3n4) was significantly increased (0.04 ± 0.01%) in the IP group, while Cis 11,14,17-eicosatrienoic acid (C20:3n3) (0.31 ± 0.03%) and adrenic acid (C22:4n6) (0.11 ± 0.02%) were significantly decreased in the LP group. Additionally, monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) were significantly increased (4.83 ± 0.35%) in the LP group compared to that in the control group. Collectively, these results indicate the potential of inactivated L. plantarum for use in commercial feed, leading to the conclusion that both inactivated and live L. plantarum can improve the Nile tilapia metabolism, altering haematological and biochemical markers. Citations play an essential role in creating a knowledge network and recognizing relevant contributions during the process of scientific production. Despite the citations establishing the links between new evidence and the preceding ideas, classic articles may not be cited adequately. Our aim is to identify if classic studies are cited over time and if the recent studies are producing new knowledge or just "giving a new look" to pre-existing ideas. We evaluated whether the theory proposed by Brooks and Dodson (Science 150(3692): 28–35, 1965)-Size-efficiency Hypothesis was referenced in studies on the subject since its publication. Through the analysis of 1480 scientific papers, we quantified—from 1965 to 2018—the citation index (CI) of the original article considering the number of articles produced on the topic per year and the number of citations to other authors (intermediaries). We observed that 60% of the papers and 59% of the intermediaries do not refer to the original article. The CI was low and negatively affected by the age of the original article, showing that the frequency of citation was lower than the rate by which articles on the topic were published. There is a tendency to cite more recent articles and articles that corroborate their own findings. Our data illustrated the microwave effect, in which pre-existing ideas and theories are "reheated" by more recent articles where little of the original idea is modified. Software such as EEGLab has enabled the treatment and visualization of the tracing and cortical topography of the electroencephalography (EEG) signals. In particular, the topography of the cortical electrical activity is represented by colors, which make it possible to identify functional differences between cortical areas and to associate them with various diseases. The use of cortical topography with EEG origin in the investigation of diseases is often not used due to the representation of colors making it difficult to classify the disease. Thus, the analyses have been carried out, mainly, based on the EEG tracings. Therefore, a computer system that recognizes disease patterns through cortical topography can be a solution to the diagnostic aid. In view of this, this study compared five models of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), namely: Inception v3, SqueezeNet, LeNet, VGG-16 and VGG-19, in order to know the patterns in cortical topography images obtained with EEG, in Parkinson's disease, Depression and Bipolar Disorder. SqueezeNet performed better in the 3 diseases analyzed, with Parkinson's disease being better evaluated for Accuracy (88.89%), Precison (86.36%), Recall (91.94%) and F1 Score (89.06%), the other CNNs had less performance. In the analysis of the values of the Area under ROC Curve (AUC), SqueezeNet reached (93.90%) for Parkinson's disease, (75.70%) for Depression and (72.10%) for Bipolar Disorder. We understand that there is the possibility of classifying neurological diseases from cortical topographies with the use of CNNs and, thus, creating a computational basis for the implementation of software for screening and possible diagnostic assistance. Satellite constellations play critical roles across various sectors, encompassing communication, Earth observation and space exploration. Ensuring the dependable operation of these constellations is of utmost importance. This paper introduces a dependability modeling approach using stochastic Petri nets to analyze satellite constellations. The primary focus is on improving operational efficiency through the assessment of availability, reliability and maintainability. The approach helps satellite designers make informed decisions when selecting constellation configurations by assessing various dependability metrics. Using a global navigation satellite system as a case study, we conduct extensive numerical experiments to evaluate the feasibility of our approach. The results demonstrate quantitatively the significant impact of redundant components on both reliability and availability. They also illustrate how utilizing satellites in repair and operational orbits can influence these metrics and highlight the direct correlation between reliability and maintainability. We provide a kinetic characterization of (Na+, K+)-ATPase activity in a posterior gill microsomal fraction from the semi-terrestrial mangrove crab Cardisoma guanhumi. Sucrose density gradient centrifugation reveals two distinct membrane fractions showing considerable (Na+, K+)-ATPase activity, but also containing other microsomal ATPases. The (Na+, K+)-ATPase, notably immuno-localized to the apical region of the epithelial pillar cells, and throughout the pillar cell bodies, has an M r of around 110 kDa and hydrolyzes ATP with V M = 146.8 ± 6.3 nmol Pi min-1 mg protein-1 and K M = 0.05 ± 0.003 mmol L-1 obeying Michaelis-Menten kinetics. While stimulation by Na+ (V M = 139.4 ± 6.9 nmol Pi min-1 mg protein-1, K M = 4.50 ± 0.22 mmol L-1) also follows Michaelis-Menten kinetics, modulation of (Na+, K+)-ATPase activity by MgATP (V M = 136.8 ± 6.5 nmol Pi min-1 mg protein-1, K 0.5 = 0.27 ± 0.04 mmol L-1), K+ (V M = 140.2 ± 7.0 nmol Pi min-1 mg protein-1, K 0.5 = 0.17 ± 0.008 mmol L-1), and NH4+ (V M = 149.1 ± 7.4 nmol Pi min-1 mg protein-1, K 0.5 = 0.60 ± 0.03 mmol L-1) shows cooperative kinetics. Ouabain (K I = 52.0 ± 2.6 µmol L-1) and orthovanadate (K I = 1.0 ± 0.05 µmol L-1) inhibit total ATPase activity by around 75%. At low Mg2+ concentrations, ATP is an allosteric modulator of the enzyme. This is the first study to provide a kinetic characterization of the gill (Na+, K+)-ATPase in C. guanhumi, and will be useful in better comprehending the biochemical underpinnings of osmoregulatory ability in a semi-terrestrial mangrove crab. Climate change has affected rainfall patterns in tropical regions, where simultaneous demands for water and energy, habitat loss, declining biodiversity, and spread of invasive species have reflected a rapidly changing world underway. In Brazil, hydropower generation accounts for 64% of the electricity matrix, which presently includes 1007 small hydropower plants (SHPs) having many others under construction or planned. This paper aimed to evaluate changes in water quality, plankton communities, and benthic macroinvertebrates during dam construction, filling, and the first year of operation of a SHP. Suspended solids, turbidity, and silica were variables that highlighted the impact of this construction on the river. Fast changes in water quality (increases in calcium, chlorides, and nitrate) and on aquatic communities (i.e. euglenophyceans and testate amoebae increased in numbers) were detected during the filling phase. Following SHP construction, the concentrations of metals and total phosphorus tended to decrease. Two striking findings observed in the aquatic communities from the riverine conditions to the new lake were the increase in picocyanobacteria abundance, expanding population stocks throughout the river basin, and the constant presence of the invasive mollusc Corbicula fluminea in the macroinvertebrate assemblage, revealing once again its resistance to environmental variability. The lake soon became a natural trap for ions from the drainage basin, as revealed by the increase in electrical conductivity, ammonium, potassium, and magnesium concentrations and the abundance of cyanobacteria, highlighting the need for watershed management to improve ecological conditions in the lake. Background: Tolerance to complete submergence is recognized in a limited number of Asian rice ( Oryza sativa L.) varieties, most of which contain submergence-inducible SUB1A on the polygenic SUBMERGENCE-1 ( SUB1) locus. It has been shown that the SUB1 locus encodes two Ethylene-Responsive Factor ( ERF) genes, SUB1B and SUB1C, in all O. sativa varieties. These genes were also found in O rufipogon and O nivara, wild relatives of O. sativa. However, detailed analysis of the polygenic locus in other Oryza species has not yet been made. Findings: Chromosomal location, phylogenetic, and gene structure analyses have revealed that the SUB1 locus is conserved in the long arm of chromosome 9 in most Oryza species. We also show that the SUB1A-like gene of O. nivara is on chromosome 1 and that Leersia perrieri, a grass-tolerant to deep-flooding, presents three ERF genes in the SUB1 locus. Conclusion: We provide here a deeper insight into the evolutionary origin and variation of the SUB1 locus and raise the possibility that an association of these genes with flooding tolerance in L. perrieri may exist. Abiotic stresses such as salinity, iron toxicity, and low temperatures are the main limiting factors of rice ( Oryza sativa L.) yield. The elucidation of the genes involved in responses to these stresses is extremely important to understand the mechanisms that confer tolerance, as well as for the development of cultivars adapted to these conditions. In this study, the RNA-seq technique was used to compare the transcriptional profile of rice leaves (cv. BRS Querência) in stage V3, exposed to cold, iron, and salt stresses for 24 h. A range of 41 to 51 million reads was aligned, in which a total range of 88.47 to 89.21 % was mapped in the reference genome. For cold stress, 7905 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were observed, 2092 for salt and 681 for iron stress; 370 of these were common to the three DEG stresses. Functional annotation by software MapMan demonstrated that cold stress usually promoted the greatest changes in the overall metabolism, and an enrichment analysis of overrepresented gene ontology (GO) terms showed that most of them are contained in plastids, ribosome, and chloroplasts. Saline stress induced a more complex interaction network of upregulated overrepresented GO terms with a relatively low number of genes compared with cold stress. Our study demonstrated a high number of differentially expressed genes under cold stress and a greater relationship between salt and iron stress levels. Abiotic stresses caused by excessive cold, iron, and salt are among the main growth and yield-limiting factors of rice. Among the metabolic processes, photosynthesis stands out for being closely related to crop yields, causing a yield decline by reduced photosynthetic capacity in plants under abiotic stresses. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the differential expression of chloroplast genes involved in photosynthesis by RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) and quantify gas exchanges in leaves of rice plants exposed to cold, iron, and salt stress for 24 h. Of all genes expressed in each stress, cold had the highest number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to light and chloroplast reactions, with 535 mostly down-regulated genes. Salt and iron stress was associated with 309 and 115 genes, respectively, involved in light reactions and chloroplast. The three stresses had transcripts with GOs related to light reactions, all with more than ten different GO terms. With regard to chloroplast, cold and salt stress had 12 terms of GO, and iron stress has 9 terms of GO. For gas exchange, only the parameter net assimilation rate differed significantly between stresses, with the lowest mean under cold stress. The results showed that cold stress affects photosynthesis most drastically, both at the molecular and the physiological level, and despite decreases in the net assimilation rate, changes under iron and salt stress were minor, which may be related to the tolerance of cultivar BRS Querência. The lectin from seeds of Dioclea virgata (DvirL) was purified in a single step affinity chromatography, sequenced by tandem mass spectrometry and submitted to crystallization and biological experiments. DvirL has a molecular mass of 25,412 ± 2 Da and the chains β and γ has 12,817 Da ± 2 and 12,612 Da ± 2, respectively. Primary sequence determination was assigned by tandem mass spectrometry and revealed a protein with 237 amino acids and 87% of identify with ConA. The protein crystals were obtained native and complexed with X-Man using vapor-diffusion method at a constant temperature of 293 K. A complete X-ray dataset was collected at 1.8 Å resolution. DvirL crystals were found to be orthorhombic, belonging to the space group I222, with a unit cell parameters a = 647.5 Å, b = 86.6 Å, c = 90.2 Å. Molecular replacement search found a solution with a correlation coefficient of 77.1% and an R of 44.6%. The present study also demonstrated that D. virgata lectin presents edematogenic and antinociceptive activities in rodents electing this protein as a candidate to structure/function analysis.
