Ariel, the Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey mission (Tinetti 2019; Puig et al. 2018; Pascale et al. 2018), has been selected in March 2018 by ESA for the fourth medium-class mission (M4) launch opportunity of the Cosmic Vision Program, with an expected lift off in late 2028. It is the first mission dedicated to measuring the chemical composition and thermal structures of the atmospheres of hundreds of transiting exoplanets, enabling planetary science far beyond the boundaries of our own Solar System. Its Payload (P/L) (Eccleston and Tinetti 2018; Eccleston et al. 2017; Middleton et al. 2019), has been designed to perform transit spectroscopy from space during primary and secondary planetary eclipses in order to achieve a large unbiased survey concerning the nature of exoplanets atmospheres and their interiors, to determine the key factors affecting the formation and evolution of planetary systems (Tinetti et al. 2017, 2018). Ariel will observe hundreds of warm and hot transiting gas giants, Neptunes and super-Earths around a wide range of host star types, targeting planets hotter than ∼ 600 K to take advantage of their well-mixed atmospheres. It will exploit primary and secondary transit spectroscopy in the 1.10 to 7.80 μm spectral range and broad-band photometry in the optical (0.50 - 0.80 μm) and Near IR (0.80 - 1.10 μm). One of the two instruments of the Ariel Payload is the Fine Guidance System (FGS), including three photometric channels (two used for guiding as well as science) between 0.5-1.1 μm plus a low resolution NIR spectrometer for 1.1-1.95 μm range. Along with FGS an IR Spectrometer (AIRS) (Amiaux et al. 2017) is foreseen, providing low-resolution spectroscopy in two IR channels: Channel 0 (CH0) for the 1.95 − 3.90 μm band and Channel 1 (CH1) for the 3.90 − 7.80 μm range. Finally, an Active Cooler System (ACS) including a Ne Joule-Thomson cooler is adopted to provide active cooling capability to the AIRS detectors working at cryogenic temperatures. AIRS is located at the intermediate focal plane of the telescope and common optical system and it hosts two HgCdTe-based hybrid IR detectors and two cold front-end electronics (CFEE) for detectors control and readout. Each CFEE is driven by a Detector Control Unit (DCU) part of AIRS but hosted within and managed by the Instrument Control Unit (ICU) of the Payload (Focardi et al. 2018). ICU is a warm unit residing into the S/C Service Module (SVM) and it is based on a cold redundant configuration involving the Power Supply Unit (PSU) and the Commanding and Data Processing Unit (CDPU) boards; both DCUs are instead cross-strapped and can be managed by the nominal or the redundant (PSU+CDPU) chain. ICU is in charge of AIRS management, collecting scientific and housekeeping (HK) telemetries from the spectrometer and HK from the telescope (temperatures readings), the P/L Optical Bench (OB) and other Subsystems (SS), thanks to a warm slave unit (TCU, Telescope Control Unit) interfaced to the ICU. Science and HK telemetries are then forwarded to the S/C, for temporary storage, before sending them to Ground. Here we describe the status of the ICU design at the end of B1 Phase, prior to the Mission Adoption Review (MAR) by ESA, with some still open architectural choices to be addressed and finalised once selected the ICU industrial Prime contractor. During pregnancy, apoptosis is a physiological event critical in the remodeling and aging of the placenta. Increasing evidence has pointed towards the relevance of endocannabinoids (ECs) and hypoxia as modulators of trophoblast cell death. However, the relation between these factors is still unknown. In this report, we evaluated the participation of ECs in placental apoptosis induced by cobalt chloride (CoCl), a hypoxia mimicking agent that stabilizes the expression of hypoxia inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α). We found that HIF-1α stabilization decreased FAAH mRNA and protein levels, suggesting an increase in ECs tone. Additionally, CoCl incubation and Met-AEA treatment reduced cell viability and increased TUNEL-positive staining in syncytiotrophoblast layer. Immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated Bax and Bcl-2 protein expression in the cytoplasm of syncytiotrophoblast. Finally, HIF-1α stabilization produced an increase in Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, activation of caspase 3 and PARP cleavage. All these changes in apoptotic parameters were reversed with AM251, a CB1 antagonist. These results demonstrate that HIF-1α may induce apoptosis in human placenta via intrinsic pathway by a mechanism that involves activation of CB1 receptor suggesting a role of the ECs in this process. A Cs-bearing polyphase aggregate with composition (in wt%): 76(1) + 7(1) + 17(1), was obtained from a clinoptilolite-rich epiclastic rock after a beneficiation process of the starting material (aimed to increase the fraction of zeolite to 90 wt%), cation exchange and then thermal treatment. CsAlSiO is an open-framework compound with CAS topology; CsAlSiO is a pollucite-like material with ANA topology. The thermal stability of this polyphase material was investigated by in situ high- T X-ray powder diffraction, the combined P- T effects by a series of runs with a single-stage piston cylinder apparatus, and its chemical stability following the 'availability test' ('AVA test') protocol. A series of additional investigations were performed by WDS-electron microprobe analysis in order to describe the P- T-induced modification of the material texture, and to chemically characterize the starting material and the run products. The 'AVA tests' of the polyphase aggregate show an extremely modest release of Cs: 0.05 mg/g. In response to applied temperature and at room P, CsAlSiO experiences an unquenchable and displacive Ama2-to- Amam phase transition at about 770 K, and the Amam polymorph is stable in its crystalline form up to 1600 K; a crystalline-to-amorphous phase transition occurs between 1600 and 1650 K. In response to the applied P = 0.5 GPa, the crystalline-to-amorphous transition of CsAlSiO occurs between 1670 and 1770 K. This leads to a positive Clapeyron slope (i.e., d P/d T > 0) of the crystalline-to-amorphous transition. When the polyphase aggregate is subjected at P = 0.5 GPa and T > 1770 K, CsAlSiO melts and only CsAlSiO (pollucite-like; dominant) and Cs-rich glass (subordinate) are observed in the quenched sample. Based on its thermo-elastic behavior, P- T phase stability fields, and Cs retention capacity, CsAlSiO is a possible candidate for use in the immobilization of radioactive isotopes of Cs, or as potential solid hosts for Cs γ-radiation source in sterilization applications. More in general, even the CsAlSiO-rich aggregate obtained by a clinoptilolite-rich epiclastic rock appears to be suitable for this type of utilizations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Visible and Near Infrared (VNIR) is one of the modules of EChO, the Exoplanets Characterization Observatory proposed to ESA for an M-class mission. EChO is aimed to observe planets while transiting by their suns. Then the instrument had to be designed to assure a high efficiency over the whole spectral range. In fact, it has to be able to observe stars with an apparent magnitude M = 9-12 and to see contrasts of the order of 10-10 necessary to reveal the characteristics of the atmospheres of the exoplanets under investigation. VNIR is a spectrometer in a cross-dispersed configuration, covering the 0.4-2.5 μm spectral range with a resolving power of about 330 and a field of view of 2 arcsec. It is functionally split into two channels respectively working in the 0.4-1.0 μm and 1.0-2.5 μm spectral ranges. Such a solution is imposed by the fact the light at short wavelengths has to be shared with the EChO Fine Guiding System (FGS) devoted to the pointing of the stars under observation. The spectrometer makes use of a HgCdTe detector of 512 by 512 pixels, 18 μm pitch and working at a temperature of 45 K as the entire VNIR optical bench. The instrument has been interfaced to the telescope optics by two optical fibers, one per channel, to assure an easier coupling and an easier colocation of the instrument inside the EChO optical bench. EChO is a three-modules (VNIR, SWIR, MWIR), highly integrated spectrometer, covering the wavelength range from 0.55 μ m to 11.0 μ m. The baseline design includes the goal wavelength extension to 0.4 μ m while an optional LWIR module extends the range to the goal wavelength of 16.0 μ m. An Instrument Control Unit (ICU) is foreseen as the main electronic subsystem interfacing the spacecraft and collecting data from all the payload spectrometers modules. ICU is in charge of two main tasks: the overall payload control ( Instrument Control Function) and the housekeepings and scientific data digital processing ( Data Processing Function), including the lossless compression prior to store the science data to the Solid State Mass Memory of the Spacecraft. Dear Editor, We read with great interest the article by Kontopoulou et al. [[1]] describing the study of the dsDNA carried by extracellular vesicles (EVs) in pediatric acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients. We enrolled 7 AML patients and 1 healthy control (Table 1) and collected peripheral blood (PB) and bone marrow (BM) specimens from AML patients, while only PB was collected from healthy donor. In 2/7 (29%) AML cases, no leukemia-specific mutation was sequenced neither on exoDNA nor on PB and BM genomic DNA (Table 1). [Extracted from the article]

In the last years, the number of hemodialysis (HD) patients with erythropoietin (rHuEPO) resistance is increasing. Probably, central venous catheters (CVCs) contribute to this resistance by inducing inflammation and oxidative stress. This study was aimed to compare vitamin E-bonded dialyzer (PSVE) versus polyethersulfone membrane. Sixteen subjects with CVCs were included in a prospective two-arm crossover 12-month study. The primary endpoints were the rHuEPO requirement and the erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESA) index, which was defined by the ratio between weekly EPO dosage (IU/kg/week) and Hb levels (g/dl). The mean dosages of rHuEPO to maintain hemoglobin between 10.5 and 12 g/dl were 135 ± 59 and 101 ± 57 IU/kg/week with polysulfone and PSVE, respectively ( P = 0.14). The ESA indexes were 12.1 ± 5.2 and 8.7 ± 5.2 ( P < 0.0001) with polysulfone and PSVE, respectively. A trend towards consensual changes in protein glycoxidation, antioxidant, and inflammatory markers was observed. Galectin-3 (gal-3) is a β-galactoside binding protein present in multivalent complexes with an extracellular matrix and with cell surface glycoconjugates. In this context, it can deliver a variety of intracellular signals to modulate cell activation, differentiation and survival. In the hematopoietic system, it was demonstrated that gal-3 is expressed in myeloid cells and surrounding stromal cells. Furthermore, exogenous and surface gal-3 drive the proliferation of myeloblasts in a granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF)-dependent manner. Here, we investigated whether gal-3 regulates the formation of myeloid bone marrow compartments by studying galectin-3 mice (gal-3) in the C57BL/6 background. The bone marrow histology of gal-3 mice was significantly modified and the myeloid compartments drastically disturbed, in comparison with wild-type (WT) animals. In the absence of gal-3, we found reduced cell density and diaphyseal disorders containing increased trabecular projections into the marrow cavity. Moreover, myeloid cells presented limited capacity to differentiate into mature myeloid cell populations in gal-3 mice and the number of hematopoietic multipotent progenitors was increased relative to WT animals. In addition, bone marrow stromal cells of these mice had reduced levels of GM-CSF gene expression. Taken together, our data suggest that gal-3 interferes with hematopoiesis, controlling both precursors and stromal cells and favors terminal differentiation of myeloid progenitors rather than proliferation. Cell cultures are often used to study bone mineralization; however, not all systems achieve a bone-like matrix formation. In this study, the mineralized matrix assembled in F-OST osteoblast cultures was analyzed, with the aim of establishing a novel model for bone mineralization. The ultrastructure of the cultures was investigated using scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The mineral phase was characterized using conventional and high-resolution TEM, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and solid-state P and H nuclear magnetic resonance. F-OST osteoblast cultures presented a clear nodular mineralization pattern. The chief features of the mineralizing nodules were globular accretions ranging from about 100 nm to 1.5 μm in diameter, loaded with needle-shaped crystallites. Accretions seemed to bud from the cell membrane, increase in size, and coalesce into larger ones. Arrays of loosely packed, randomly oriented collagen fibrils were seen along with the accretions. Mineralized fibrils were often observed, sometimes in close association with accretions. The mineral phase was characterized as a poorly crystalline hydroxyapatite. The Ca/P atomic ratio was 1.49 ± 0.06. The presence of OH was evident. The lattice parameters were a = 9.435 Å and c = 6.860 Å. The average crystallite size was 20 nm long and 10 nm wide. Carbonate substitutions were seen in phosphate and OH sites. Water was also found within the apatitic core. In conclusion, F-OST osteoblast cultures produce a bone-like matrix and may provide a good model for bone mineralization studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The results of studies on the genetics of complex traits need to be replicated and to reach robust statistical significance before they can be considered as established. We here tried to replicate the previously reported association between the TRIB3 Q84R polymorphism (rs2295490) and glucose homeostasis. Three samples of Europeans with fasting glucose <7.0 mmol/l were studied. In sample 1 ( n = 791), the association between TRIB3 Q84R and impaired glucose regulation (IGR; defined as impaired fasting glucose and/or impaired glucose tolerance and/or type 2 diabetes by OGTT) and insulin sensitivity (ISI), and its interplay with early-phase insulin secretion (i.e. disposition index [DI]) were analysed. Sample 2 ( n = 374) and sample 3 ( n = 394) were used to replicate the association with IGR and insulin sensitivity (by glucose clamp), respectively. Genotyping was performed by TaqMan allele discrimination. R84 carriers were at higher risk of IGR: OR for the additive model 1.54, p = 0.004, and 1.63, p = 0.027, in samples 1 and 2, respectively. In sample 1, both ISI ( p = 0.005) and DI ( p = 0.043) were progressively lower from QQ to QR and RR individuals. A ‘triangulation approach’ indicated that the association with IGR was mostly mediated by DI rather than by ISI changes (i.e. being the expected ORs 1.51 and 1.25, respectively). In sample 3, glucose disposal was 38.8 ± 17.7, 33.8 ± 14.4, and 31.6 ± 13.3 μmol min−1 kg−1, p = 0.022, in QQ, QR and RR individuals, respectively. Our data confirm that the TRIB3 R84 variant affects glucose homeostasis and suggest this effect is due to an alteration of the interplay between insulin sensitivity and secretion. Tissue engineering is a multidisciplinary research area that aims to develop new techniques and/or biomaterials for medical applications. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the osteogenic potential of a composite of hydroxyapatite and alginate in bone defects with critical sizes, surgically made in the calvaria region of rats. The rats (48 adult males), Rattus norvegicus Wistar, were divided into two groups: control (without composite implantation) and experimental (with composite implantation) and analyzed by optical microscopy at the biological time points 15, 45, 90 and 120 d, and transmission electron microscopy 120 d after the implantation of the biomaterial. It was observed that the biomaterial presented a high degree of fragmentation since the first experimental points studied, and that the fragments were surrounded by new bone after the duration of the project. These areas were studied by analytical transmission electron microscopy using an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer. Three regions could be distinguished: (1) the biomaterial rich in hydroxyapatite; (2) a thin contiguous region containing phosphorus but without calcium; (3) a region of initial ossification containing mineralizing collagen fibrils with a calcium/phosphorus ratio smaller than the particles of the composite. The intermediate region (without calcium or containing very low amounts of calcium), which just surrounded the composite had not been described in the literature yet, and is probably associated specifically to the biocomposite used. The high performance of the biomaterial observed may be related to the fact that alginate molecules form highly anionic complexes and are capable of adsorbing important factors recognized by integrins from osteoblasts. Regions of fibrotic tissue were also observed mainly in the initial experimental points analyzed. However, it did not significantly influence the final result. The main objective of this work was to evaluate the specific role of calcium phosphates surface energy on serum protein adsorption and human osteoblast adhesion, by isolating chemical effects from those caused by topography. Highly dense phosphate ceramics (single-phase hydroxyapatite HA and β-tricalcium phosphates β-TCP) presenting two distinct nano roughnesses were produced. Some samples were gold-sputter coated in order to conveniently mask the surface chemical effects (without modification of the original roughness) and to study the isolated effect of surface topography on cellular behavior. The results indicated that the nano topography of calcium phosphates strongly affected the protein adsorption process, being more important than surface chemistry. The seeding efficacy of osteoblasts was not affected nor by the topography neither by the calcium phosphate chemistries but the β-TCP chemistry negatively influenced cell spreading. We observed that surface hydrophobicity is another way to change protein adsorption on surfaces. The decrease of the polar component of surface energy on gold-coated samples leaded to a decreased albumin and fibronectin adsorption but to an increased cell adhesion. Overall, this work contributes to better understand the role of topography and surface chemistry of calcium phosphates in serum protein adsorption and osteoblast adhesion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Radular teeth of a neolepetopsid patellogastropod limpet, Paralepetopsis ferrugivora, from a deep-sea hydrothermal vent site have similar elemental composition (O, Si, P, S, Cl, K and Fe) to radular teeth of the shallow-waters patellogastropod limpets. However, in contrast to shallow waters limpets, the fully mature teeth of P. ferrugivora do not show any crystalline phases. Amorphous silica was found in the cusp of the teeth and amorphous iron oxide in the junction zone and base of the teeth. Ferritin-rich vesicles were observed in cells adjacent to the junction zone of the early mature teeth, suggesting that these vesicles can mediate the delivery of iron to the tooth matrix. The similarity in the elemental composition between the hydrothermal limpet P. ferrugivora and shallow-waters patellogastropod limpets shows that the extreme hydrothermal environment did not alter the elemental composition of the radular teeth in the deep-sea species. Background:. We describe our experience with exenterative pelvic surgery for colorectal cancer in a small community hospital. Methods:. We retrospectively evaluated 26 consecutive patients (14 women) with locally advanced (n=16) or recurrent (n=10) colorectal adenocarcinomas who underwent pelvic exenterations between August 1990 and December 2001 in our service. Results:. Seventeen patients had posterior pelvic exenteration (PPE), eight had total pelvic exenteration (TPE) and one had TPE with internal hemipelvectomy. Major morbidity occurred in 12 patients (46%), causing 3 deaths (11%) in the immediate postoperative period. Fourteen of 23 patients who survived the immediate postoperative period have relapsed (61%). At a median follow-up of 42 months, the 5-year survival is 38%. Conclusion:. Pelvic exenterative procedures can be offered to patients with bulky or recurrent colorectal carcinomas with adequate results and satisfactory palliation, even in a community setting. Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy of urine (as well as of other biological fluids) is a very powerful technique enabling multi-component analysis useful in both diagnosis and follow-up of a wide range of inherited metabolic diseases. Among these pathologies, cystinuria is characterised by accumulation in urine of four dibasic amino acids, namely lysine, arginine, ornithine and cystine; the last one, being only slightly water soluble, generates urolithiasis. The mentioned aminoacids can be detected in the urine NMR spectrum of cystinuric patients, the most abundant being the lysine (5 mM and over are often detected), whose typical signals become very high; arginine and ornithine are also usually detectable, although pathologic concentrations are lower (usually below 2 mM). The proposed NMR technique is also suitable in monitoring the therapy with α-mercaptopropionylglycine (MPG), providing quantitation of several metabolites of interest in the follow-up of the pathology, like cystine, creatinine and citrate. As part of a review of hospital practice a sample of medical records of 15 intensive care units were analysed for the following items: reason for and origin of admission, age, sex, full pharmacological history, length of stay, clinical outcome, discharge diagnosis. Antibiotic therapy, steroid use for shock, problems of hemostasis, and cardiovascular drugs are areas where an active intervention appears to be specifically needed. Interhospital differences in diagnostic and general care criteria, documentation of inappropriate therapeutic practice, lack of reliable data registration gave occasion for an extensive discussion with clinicians leading to decisions on exclusion of drugs from hospital formularies, organization of information programs and of controlled clinical trials. The application of simple techniques of drug utilization review has proved a useful, inexpensive tool for creating favourable conditions for wide scale improvement of therapeutic practice. Clinically relevant events possibly attributable to drug exposure have been monitored prospectively over a period of six months in 27 general intensive care units. Fifty-four events attributed to drugs were reported in 51 patients during their stay in hospital, corresponding to an overall incidence of 1.35%. The behaviour of the physicians following attribution of the events to a prescribed drug is analyzed and discussed in detail with respect to its relationship to the quality and severity of the reaction, and the classes of drugs. Twenty-four of the 4537 monitored admissions during the six months were due to life-threatening emergencies linked to the administration of drugs (14) and radio-contrast media (10) (overall incidence 0.5%). While the clinical burden attributable to adverse drug reactions in Intensive Care Units appears to be relatively small, the analysis shows that there is ample room for a greater reduction in their incidence. Based on a structural similarity to the transition state of a propylamine transfer reaction involved in polyamine biosynthesis, Sadenosyl-(5′)-1,8-diamino-3-thiooctane (AdoDATO), the most potent inhibitor of spermidine synthases, was used as a hapten for mice immunization. From immunized mice sera, the IgG fractions were purified by means of affinity (protein A/G) chromatography. Sera and purified polyclonal antibodies from several mice were found to exert spermidine synthase-like activity. Moreover, by means means of hybridoma technology, 19 anti-AdoDATO hybridoma clones have been screened for propylamine transfer activity and at least 6 were found to produce catalytic antibodies. These findings indicate the presence in the sera of active spermidine synthase-like catalytic antibodies. The reported results for the first time evidence the feasibility of preparation of N-alkylating antibodies, widening the biotechnological perspectives of antibodies as biocatalysts. A novel nuclear magnetic resonance method is proposed for the diagnosis and follow-up of patients affected by branched chain ketoaciduria. The method allows quantitation of the branched chain amino acids (BCAA's) such as leucine, isoleucine and valine and of related keto- and hydroxy acids by means of a single spectrum. The method implies short time of analysis, as opposed to the very long time required by the techniques currently in use (amino acid analyzer combined with gaschromatography/mass spectrometry of keto- and hydroxyacids), it is easy and suitable for adjustements of the dietary treatment even on a daily basis. The case of a 15 days old newborn child, presenting muscular hypertonicity was unambiguously diagnosed in few minutes by means of one single NMR spectrum of urine. More interestingly, NMR spectra of serum in the following days were suitable for quantitating amino-, and keto acids as well as other metabolites of relevance in the follow up of the dietary treatment of the disease. After a diet lacking of BCAA's, to eliminate keto acids, a low BCAA diet was introduced, that succeeded in keeping the serum levels of the three amino acids within the normal range, while dropping the related keto acids. Proton magnetic resonance spectra of biological fluids such as urine, plasma and cerebro-spinal fluid can be used for multi-component analysis of highly concentrated species, thus providing information about the general metabolism of the patient. Hydrogen containing analytes in concentration higher than 10 µM are indeed often detectable in biological fluid in 15 minutes by means of an unexpensive 200 MHz spectrometer essentially without sample manipulation. Amino acids, keton bodies, organic acids and other metabolites can be easily estimated by this approach; consequently this technique represents a powerful tool particularly in the diagnosis of inborn errors of amino acid metabolism, when improving the prognosis often depends on a very early diagnosis and on an effective method for monitoring the effects of therapy. In the present paper, several cases of inherited diseases related to amino acid impaired metabolism will be presented to illustrate the importance in the diagnosis. Phenylketonuria, tyrosinemia, cystinuria, ornithinemia, argininosuccinic aciduria, maple syrup urine disease (MSUD), alkaptonuria, lysinuria and other genetic pathologies were in fact unambiguously and rapidly diagnosed by means of the identification in the biological fluids of the relevant accumulating amino acids and/or of their metabolites. A clinical case concerning a normal pregnancy outcome in a transfusion-dependent woman affected by homozygous beta thalassemia, whose partner was negative with regard to the "thalassemic trait", was reported. The patient showed no iron deposit problems, viral diseases that could have made the pregnancy management difficult or any complications during the gestation. Blood transfusion was not necessary during the following caesarean delivery. The outcome was a healthy female child, born at a gestational age of 38 weeks, showing neither malformations nor problems. This was possible due to a detailed preconceptual guidance and a pre-pregnancy assessment. The patient normally would have had a blood transfusion every 20 days and a strict desferrioxamine chelating therapy; however, this treatment was suspended during her pregnancy because of the well-recognised teratogenic effects of the drug. The average values of ferritin were just a little higher than before being pregnant. The foetus, due to her particular chelating activity, probably maintained these ferritin levels. A sample of 95 ml umbilical cord blood was taken during the delivery. It is well known that umbilical cord blood contains a good quantity of CD34+ stem cells, the haematopoietic progenitors. It was therefore collected for transplanting to the mother and for bone marrow reconstitution. Moreover, our experience suggests that desferrioxamine therapy during lactation does not alter iron excretion in breast milk. Therefore, women now affected by Cooley disease may possibly have a normal pregnancy without ovulation induction, intrauterine growth retardation, foetal loss and preterm labour. Fetal stem cells transplants depend on nuclea-ted cells from fetal blood. This study was a prospective randomized trials to compare the collection of fetal blood by gravity into a bag containing anticoagulant, before and after delivery of the placenta. The obstetric and the newborn characteristics in the two group were not significantly different. The mean volume of fetal blood collected while the placental was still in utero was 74.93±7.1 ml as against 35.78±3.6 ml for collection of fetal blood after delivery of the placenta. The aim of our study was to evaluate the diagnostic agreement between quantitative sonography of the calcaneum (QUS) and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) of the spine and femur. 153 women enrolled in our study and were divided in three groups. Group A was composed of women aged between 45 and 55, Group B of women of 56-66 and Group C of women 67-77. Mean height cm 164+/-2.8; mean weight kg 68+/-3.2. The most concordant results were obtained in group B. This suggests that QUS screening for osteoporosis may be suitable for the "younger" perimenopausal patient. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The ultrastructure of the greigite magnetosome membrane in the multicellular magnetotactic bacteria 'Candidatus Magnetoglobus multicellularis' was studied. Each cell contains 80 membrane-enclosed iron-sulfide magnetosomes. Cytochemistry methods showed that the magnetosomes are enveloped by a structure whose staining pattern and dimensions are similar to those of the cytoplasmic membrane, indicating that the magnetosome membrane likely originates from the cytoplasmic membrane. Freeze-fracture showed intramembrane particles in the vesicles surrounding each magnetosome. Observations of cell membrane invaginations, the trilaminar membrane structure of immature magnetosomes, and empty vesicles together suggested that greigite magnetosome formation begins by invagination of the cell membrane, as has been proposed for magnetite magnetosomes.

Magnetotactic bacteria produce magnetic crystals in organelles called magnetosomes. The bacterial cells may also have phosphorus-containing granules, sulfur globules, or polyhydroxyalkanoate inclusions. In the present study, the ultrastructure and elemental composition of intracellular inclusions from uncultured magnetotactic bacteria collected in a marine environment are described. Magnetosomes contained mainly defect-free, single magnetite crystals with prismatic morphologies. Two types of phosphorus-containing granules were found in magnetotactic cocci. The most common consisted of phosphorus-rich granules containing P, O, and Mg; and sometimes also C, Na, Al, K, Ca, Mn, Fe, Zn, and small amounts of S and Cl were also found. In phosphorus-sulfur-iron granules, P, O, S, Na, Mg, Ca, Fe, and frequently Cl, K, and Zn, were detected. Most cells had two phosphorus-rich granules, which were very similar in elemental composition. In rod-shaped bacteria, these granules were positioned at a specific location in the cell, suggesting a high level of intracellular organization. Polyhydroxyalkanoate granules and sulfur globules were less commonly seen in the cells and had no fixed number or specific location. The presence and composition of these intracellular structures provide clues regarding the physiology of the bacteria that harbor them and the characteristics of the microenvironments where they thrive.
