Trait-based methodologies are gaining traction in the field of ecology, providing deeper insights into ecosystem structure and functions. To this end, trait databases tailored to specific taxonomic groups have become foundational. In Taiwan, the collaborative efforts of avian researchers and dedicated citizen scientists have led to the compilation of a vast array of data. This includes web-sourced images from social media, spatial distribution records from eBird, and morphological metrics from banded birds and specimens. Enriched by peer-reviewed literature, we have meticulously assembled a comprehensive trait dataset encompassing 454 bird species across 73 families. This dataset covers a wide range of traits, including foraging ecology, morphological characteristics, territorial behaviors, breeding attributes, and the roles of bird species in ecosystem regulation. As an invaluable resource, this dataset lays the foundation for in-depth exploration of functional diversity, trait-based community ecology, ecosystem function, and critical insights needed to shape conservation strategies. Selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol under atmospheric oxygen is a sustainable route for the synthesis of benzaldehyde. The development of low-cost metal catalysts is a challenging research topic. Herein, supported vanadia catalysts on carbon nitride were prepared using vanadyl acetylacetonate as a precursor through a wet-impregnation method. The synthesized VO/eg-C3N4 were characterized by N2 adsorption–desorption, TG, XRD, FT-IR, XPS, UV–Vis, SEM, and O2-TPD. The eg-C3N4 material could disperse the vanadia species, and the distributions of vanadium cations (V5+/V4+) were largely dependent on the preparation temperature. In the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol under atmospheric oxygen, the catalysts showed moderate catalytic activity. Under identical reaction conditions, the activity of VO/eg-C3N4 was higher than vanadia catalysts supported on SBA-15 and CNTs materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is a call for global efforts to preserve the ecological systems that can sustain economies and people's lives. However, carbon emission (CEM) threatens the sustainability of humanity and ecological systems. This analysis looked into the influence of energy use (ERU), human capital (HCI), trade openness (TOP), natural resource (NRR), population, and economic growth (ENG) on CEM. The paper gathered panel data from the Central Asia region from 1990 to 2020. The CS-ARDL was applied to establish the long-term interaction among the indicators. The paper's findings indicated the presence of the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) in the Central Asia regions. Also, the empirical evidence highlighted that energy use, natural resources, and trade openness cause higher levels of CEM. However, the research verified that CEM can be improved through human capital and urban population growth. The study also found that HCI moderates the interaction between NRR and CEM. The causality assessment indicated a one-way interplay between ENG, ERU, NRR, and CEM. The study proposes that to support ecological stability in these regions, policy-makers should concentrate on developing human capital, investing in renewable energy sources, and utilizing contemporary technologies to harness natural resources in the economies of Central Asia. This paper focuses on a human motion image detection and tracking method that utilizes a Gaussian mixture model and light sensor. The objective is to develop an accurate and efficient approach for detecting and tracking human motion images in various applications such as human behavior analysis and intelligent monitoring. To achieve this, the method utilizes a Gaussian mixture model to establish a background model of the scene. The background model is used to estimate the static elements in the scene. By computing the background difference of the current image, a binary image of the foreground region is obtained. Additionally, data from the light sensor is incorporated to further segment and filter the foreground area, removing noise and irrelevant motion. The detection and tracking of human motion is realized through trajectory analysis and matching techniques. Experimental evaluation confirms the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method. The results demonstrate that the method achieves high accuracy and robustness in human motion image detection and tracking. Objective and design: Changes in the immune status of patients with sepsis may have a major impact on their prognosis. Our research focused on changes in various immune cell subsets and T-cell activation during the progression of sepsis. Methods and subjects: We collected data from 188 sepsis patients at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine. The main focus was on the patient's immunocyte subset typing, T-cell activation/Treg cell analysis, and cytokine assay, which can indicate the immune status of the patient. Results: The study found that the number of CD4+ T cells, CD8+ T cells, NK cells, and B cells decreased early in the disease, and the decrease in CD4+ and CD8+ T cells was more pronounced in the death group. T lymphocyte activation was inhibited, and the number of Treg cells increased as the disease progressed. T lymphocyte inhibition was more significant in the death group, and the increase in IL-10 was more significant in the death group. Finally, we used patients' baseline conditions and immunological detection indicators for modeling and found that IL-10, CD4+ Treg cells, CD3+HLA-DR+ T cells, and CD3+CD69+ T cells could predict patients' prognosis well. Conclusion: Our study found that immunosuppression occurs in patients early in sepsis. Early monitoring of the patient's immune status may provide a timely warning of the disease. Key message: Overexpression of miR171 restored SE competence in the recalcitrant citrus callus, and inhibition of miR171 function weakened SE competence in the strongly embryogenic citrus callus. Somatic embryogenesis (SE) is an important way of in vitro regeneration for plants. For perennial woody crops such as citrus, embryogenic callus is usually induced from unfertilized aborted ovules and widely used in biotechnology aided breeding. However, SE capacity always declines in callus during subculture, which makes regeneration difficult and hinders the application of biotechnology. We previously found that miR171 may be a regulator of SE in citrus, based on the abundant expression of csi-miR171c in the embryogenic callus and during SE of citrus. Here, we report that miR171 promotes SE and is required for SE in citrus. Overexpression of miR171 restored SE competence in the recalcitrant callus of 'Guoqing No.1' Satsuma mandarin (G1), whereas inhibition of miR171 function by Short Tandem Target Mimic (STTM) weakened SE competence in the strongly embryogenic callus of 'Valencia' sweet orange (V). The comparative transcriptomic analysis in miR171 overexpressed callus line (OE) and the wild type callus (WT) indicated that overexpression of miR171 decreased the expression level of its SCARECROW-LIKE (CsSCL) targets, and activated stress response related biological processes and metabolic processes that are required for cell differentiation. However, CsSCLs were up-regulated in the OE callus during SE induction process, which activated the cell division and developmental processes that are required for embryogenesis progress. Numerical methods that are mass conservative, computationally stable, and efficient are essential for simulating multiphase flow in fractured porous reservoirs. In this paper, a fully mass conservative numerical method that meets these requirements is proposed and analyzed. Unlike in the implicit pressure and explicit saturation (IMPES) method, in this method, the pressure and saturation equations are solved sequentially in each iteration step. In this framework, the calculation of the saturation-related parameters no longer depends on the initial conditions of the current time step, but on the results of the current and previous iterations. Through this treatment, the discontinuities of the saturation and capillary pressure in the pre- and post-two time steps can be overcome to achieve fully mass conservation. Two numerical examples are designed to verify the robustness and efficiency of the presented method. The numerical results indicate that this new method is fully mass conservative, computationally more stable, and more efficient than the IMPES method. Furthermore, the proposed method is suitable not only for reservoirs with homogeneous permeability distributions but also for reservoirs with heterogeneous permeability distributions, which greatly improves the applicability of the new method. This work investigates the effect of high voltage (HV) electrode material of a point-plane plasma reactor on the inactivation rate of E. coli in both direct plasma and post-discharge inactivation processes. For the direct plasma processes, nickel chromium alloy, iron, tungsten and copper were used as HV electrode materials. In comparison with the other three materials, a significantly higher inactivation rate of E. coli was achieved with copper as the HV electrode. The inactivation effect was demonstrated to be mainly associated with the toxicity of copper ions, rather than from copper nanoparticles released from the electrode during the treatment. Similarly, for the post-discharge inactivation process, a higher E. coli inactivation rate was achieved in both post-plasma and plasma-treated water treatment using copper as the HV electrode, as compared to the tungsten control case. Increased inactivation rates are a result of a synergistic action between copper ions and the hydrogen peroxide generated by the plasma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Nepal, gastrointestinal infections due to parasites including Entamoeba species are common. The main aim of this study was to identify species of Entamoeba using genotypic analysis. The prevalence of Entamoeba infections was examined by PCR in fecal samples from 143 inhabitants living close to wild rhesus macaques in Kathmandu, Nepal. The numbers of positive cases were one (0.7%) for E. histolytica, eight (5.6%) for E. dispar, seven (4.9%) for E. coli, and two (1.4%) for E. chattoni (E. polecki ST2). No infections with E. nuttalli, E. moshkovskii, and E. polecki ST1 were found. In E. dispar, at least seven different genotypes were detected from the eight samples by sequence analysis of tRNA-linked short tandem repeats. Different genotypes were found even in a couple from the same family. This is the first report demonstrating that E. dispar with high genotypic diversity is prevalent, rather than E. histolytica, in Kathmandu, and that zoonotic transmission of E. chattoni from rhesus macaques might occur in the inhabitants. Various methods have been exploited to replicate nacre features into artificial structural materials with impressive structural and mechanical similarity. However, it is still very challenging to produce nacre-mimetics in three-dimensional bulk form, especially for further scale-up. Herein, we demonstrate that large-sized, three-dimensional bulk artificial nacre with comprehensive mimicry of the hierarchical structures and the toughening mechanisms of natural nacre can be facilely fabricated via a bottom-up assembly process based on laminating pre-fabricated two-dimensional nacre-mimetic films. By optimizing the hierarchical architecture from molecular level to macroscopic level, the mechanical performance of the artificial nacre is superior to that of natural nacre and many engineering materials. This bottom-up strategy has no size restriction or fundamental barrier for further scale-up, and can be easily extended to other material systems, opening an avenue for mass production of high-performance bulk nacre-mimetic structural materials in an efficient and cost-effective way for practical applications. The aim of this study is to explore the expression and significance of urokinase-type plasminogen activator (u-PA) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in gastric cancer, providing a novel insight for the diagnosis and treatment of gastric cancer. The gastric cancer specimens, which were excised from 87 patients and confirmed during July, 2012-July, 2014, were selected as observation group, and the normal tissue next to the tumor (more than 5 cm from the edge of the tumor) from 45 patients were randomly selected as control. u-PA and VEGF were detected by immunohistochemistry for the analysis of the correlation of u-PA and VEGF in two groups. The positive rates of u-PA and VEGF in gastric cancer tissue were 81.61 and 79.31 %, respectively, which were 6.67 and 8.89 % in the control group, respectively. The positive rates in the observation group were obviously higher than those in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant ( P < 0.05). Among the 87 gastric cancer tissue samples from the observation group, the positive rates of u-PA and VEGF in the gastric cancer with poor differentiation, lymphatic metastasis, invasion up to serosal layer, and TNM stage III + IV were obviously higher than those in the gastric cancer with high differentiation, non-lymphatic metastasis, invasion not up to the serosal layer, and TNM stage I + II, and the difference was statistically significant ( P < 0.05). Among the 87 gastric cancer tissue samples from the observation group, u-PA and VEGF were found to be positive in 60 cases and negative in 7 cases. By comparing the two groups, u-PA and VEGF were positively correlated in gastric cancer tissue ( P < 0.05). u-PA and VEGF were highly expressed in gastric cancer tissue, which could be used as the molecular biological indicators to predict the invasion and metastasis potential of gastric cancer. Several polymorphic markers, including serine-rich protein genes, have been used for the genotyping of isolates from the morphologically indistinguishable protozoan parasites Entamoeba histolytica, Entamoeba dispar, and Entamoeba nuttalli. Genotypes of tRNA-linked short tandem repeats (STRs) are highly polymorphic, but the correlation with geographical distribution is unknown. We have recently isolated 15 E. nuttalli strains from wild rhesus macaques in four locations in Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. The sequences of the serine-rich protein genes of the E. nuttalli strains differed among the four locations. In this study, we analyzed tRNA-linked STRs in six loci of the 15 strains. Two genotypes were found in loci N-K2, R-R, and S-D, three in locus S-Q, and five in locus D-A. In locus A-L, one major genotype and ten minor genotypes were found, resulting in mixtures of two to six genotypes in eight strains. By combination of the main genotypes in the six loci, the 15 strains were divided into nine genotypes. The genotypes observed in E. nuttalli strains were quite different from those in E. histolytica and E. dispar. A phylogenetic tree constructed from tRNA-linked STRs in the six loci reflected the different places of isolation. These results suggest that sequence diversity of tRNA-linked STRs in E. nuttalli occurs with relatively high frequency and might be a marker of geographical distribution of host rhesus macaques, even in limited areas. Many colonies of macaques ( Macaca fascicularis and Macaca mulatta) are maintained in China, especially in Guangxi and Guizhou. A total of 803 fresh stool samples infected with Entamoeba were obtained from three big colonies of macaques located in southwest China. The samples were examined for the presence of five Entamoeba species using PCR. Entamoeba nuttalli, Entamoeba dispar, Entamoeba coli, and Entamoeba chattoni infections were detected, but Entamoeba histolytica infection was not. This study is the first to report on the prevalence of E. nuttalli in wild macaques from China. Eighteen E. nuttalli isolates and five E. dispar isolates were obtained by culturing the samples in Tanabe-Chiba medium. The serine-rich protein (SRP), ribosomal RNA (rRNA), hexokinase (HXK), glucose-6-phosphate isomerase (GPI), and phosphoglucomutase (PGM) genes of E. nuttalli isolates were compared with other reported isolates. The results showed clear differences among the Chinese E. nuttalli isolates and other isolates based on the SRP gene sequences. However, HXK, GPI, and PGM genes of these strains were similar to those of other isolates. The rRNA genes of E. coli and E. chattoni were also amplified and analyzed from these samples. A few PCR-based DNA typing methods using repetitive elements contained within both protein-coding genes and noncoding DNAs have been reported for Entamoeba histolytica over the years. The serine-rich E. histolytica protein and tRNA-linked short tandem repeats (STRs) are most commonly used to investigate the relationship between parasite genotype and E. histolytica infection outcome. Many E. histolytica infections in China have been reported; however, little genome information has been provided. In the current paper, five Chinese E. histolytica samples were reported: three amoebic liver abscess cases, one combined case and one asymptomatic case. Our study is the first to report on the DNA typing information of E. histolytica in China. We included two city, one imported, and two country cases. Sequence analysis of serine-rich protein genes confirmed the presence of seven sequence types in five isolates. The STRs amplified from the samples revealed five STR variations in the A-L, four in the N-K2, and R-R loci, three in D-A, S-D and S-Q loci. Two country patients were found to have a different outcome of infection with the same genotypes of E. histolytica, whereas in a city case, one E. histolytica strain had led to different outcome of the infection in one patient. Analyses of the results suggest that more genome information of E. histolytica strains from China through accurate methods is needed to interpret how the parasite genome plays a role in determining the outcome of E. histolytica infections. Long-tailed macaques ( Macaca fascicularis) are bred in China for export and for use in experiments. Entamoeba infections in captive long-tailed macaques were surveyed in one of the biggest colonies located in Guangxi Province, China . One stool sample was obtained from each of the 152 different cages representing >3,000 macaques in the colony. The samples were examined by PCR for five Entamoeba species. The number of detected Entamoeba coli infections comprised 94% of the samples, 93% for Entamoeba chattoni, and 83% for Entamoeba dispar. In contrast, Entamoeba histolytica and Entamoeba nuttalli were not detected. Six isolates of E. dispar were obtained by culture in Tanabe-Chiba medium. Analysis of serine-rich protein genes in these isolates showed two genotypes, one of which is identical to that of the E. dispar SAW760 strain in humans. This suggests transmission of E. dispar between humans and nonhuman primates. These results demonstrate that Entamoeba infections are common, but virulent Entamoeba species are absent in this colony. This work also confirms the need for monitoring with PCR-based identification of Entamoeba species for captive macaques in breeding colonies to ensure animal health and protection of humans from zoonotic hazards. Abstract  Advances in wireless sensor networks and positioning technologies enable new applications monitoring moving objects. Some of these applications, such as traffic management, require the possibility to query the future trajectories of the objects. In this paper, we propose an original data access method, the ANR-tree, which supports predictive queries. We focus on real life environments, where the objects move within constrained networks, such as vehicles on roads. We introduce a simulation-based prediction model based on graphs of cellular automata, which makes full use of the network constraints and the stochastic traffic behavior. Our technique differs strongly from the linear prediction model, which has low prediction accuracy and requires frequent updates when applied to real traffic with velocity changing frequently. The data structure extends the R-tree with adaptive units which group neighbor objects moving in the similar moving patterns. The predicted movement of the adaptive unit is not given by a single trajectory, but instead by two trajectory bounds based on different assumptions on the traffic conditions and obtained from the simulation. Our experiments, carried on two different datasets, show that the ANR-tree is essentially one order of magnitude more efficient than the TPR-tree, and is much more scalable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract  Database system is the infrastructure of the modern information system. The R&D in the database system and its technologies is one of the important research topics in the field. The database R&D in China took off later but it moves along by giant steps. This report presents the achievements Renmin University of China (RUC) has made in the past 25 years and at the same time addresses some of the research projects we, RUC, are currently working on. The presence of abundant clay components and microporous structure in shale results in its high hydrophilicity, making a water-rich environment inevitable in petroleum exploration projects. Therefore, it is crucial to consider the influence of bedding structure, moisture content, confining pressure, and their combined effects on the geomechanical properties of shale. This article aims to investigate the mechanical properties of deep shale under varying water content conditions, elucidate the failure mode and failure mechanism of shale in actual engineering scenarios, and explores the interplay between stress, structure, moisture content, and other factors on its mechanical properties. The evaluation of wellbore stability and fracture propagation effects is proposed based on laboratory experiments using triaxial stress and strain data, along with the application of energy evolution theory. The experimental procedures encompass an analysis of shale's microscopic components and structure, as well as anisotropic shale triaxial compression tests conducted under different moisture contents and confining pressures. The results demonstrate that shale exhibits dense pores in its microstructure and displays pronounced anisotropic characteristics in its macrostructure. The presence of water within these pores, combined with the in situ stress within the formation, significantly influences the mechanical properties of shale. This anisotropy decreases with increasing moisture content, but the mechanical performance still decreases. Under triaxial compression conditions, the increase in confining pressure to some extent enhances the anisotropy of shale's deformation characteristics, which is related to the failure modes of shale. However, the detrimental effect of moisture content on shale's mechanical properties still persists. In order to quantify the impact of these factors, this study utilizes the elastic modulus as an indicator of the coupling effect. It combines the triaxial strain curve obtained from laboratory tests and proposes an evaluation index for shale mechanical properties based on the energy evolution theory. This index is suitable for assessing wellbore stability (the stability index called SIr) and crack expansion (the brittleness index called BIr). The calculation results reveal that, during the wellbore drilling process, excavating parallel to the direction of shale bedding while maintaining low moisture content and high confining pressure yields a higher SIr value, indicating better wellbore stability. On the other hand, during reservoir fracturing, fracturing perpendicular to the shale bedding direction and maintaining low confining pressure and moisture content result in a smaller BIr value. This retrospective and a single-center study evaluated the prognostic value of the maximum serum creatinine value (maxCr) and the maximum serum creatinine growth rate (Vmax) after paraquat (PQ) ingestion. One hundred and seventy-one patients with PQ poisoning were treated with a uniform protocol. Demographic variables, clinical manifestations, relevant laboratory data, maxCr and Vmax of all patients were recorded and calculated. The time after PQ ingestion of maxCr and Vmax were also recorded. Vmax and MaxCr exhibited statistically significant differences between the survivor (n = 53) and death (n = 118) groups. Vmax appeared earlier in the death group than the survivor group. Regard to the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, Vmax had an AUC of 0.861 (95% CI, 0.801-0.921) and the optimal cut-off value of 6.21 μmol/(L·h) (sensitivity, 76.3%; specificity, 81.1%). MaxCr had an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.821 (95% CI, 0.752-0.889) and the optimal cut-off value of 225.5 µmol/L (sensitivity, 82.2%; specificity, 67.9%). The comparison of the AUC in the two parameters showed no significant difference, but Vmax appeared earlier than maxCr. Based on binary logistic regression analysis, MaxCr and Vmax both showed strong predictive powers for evaluating the prognosis of acute PQ poisoning patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Expression of the TUSC2/FUS1 tumor suppressor gene in TUSC2 deficient EGFR wildtype lung cancer cells increased sensitivity to erlotinib. Microarray mRNA expression analysis of TUSC2 inducible lung cancer cells treated with erlotinib uncovered defects in the response to oxidative stress suggesting that increasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) would enhance therapeutic efficacy. Addition of the thioredoxin reductase 1 inhibitor (TXNRD1) auranofin (AF) to NSCLC cells treated with combination of TUSC2 forced expression with erlotinib increased tumor cell apoptosis and inhibited colony formation. TXNRD1 overexpression rescued tumors from AF-TUSC2-erlotinib induced apoptosis. Neutralizing ROS with nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA) abrogated cell death induced by AF-TUSC2-erlotinib, indicating a regulatory role for ROS in the efficacy of the three drug combination. Isobologram-based statistical analysis of this combination demonstrated superior synergism, compared with each individual treatment at lower concentrations. In NSCLC tumor xenografts, tumor growth was markedly inhibited and animal survival was prolonged over controls by AF-TUSC2-erlotinib. Microarray mRNA expression analysis uncovered oxidative stress and DNA damage gene signatures significantly upregulated by AF-TUSC2-erlotinib compared to TUSC2-erlotinib. Pathway analysis showed the highest positive z-score for the NRF2-mediated oxidative stress response. Taken together these findings show that the combination of TUSC2-erlotinib induces additional novel vulnerabilities that can be targeted with AF. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
