The flowering plant family Asteraceae is diverse and its constituent species are common in many habitats worldwide. However, its pollen, although widely available, is rarely collected by generalist bee species, suggesting it possesses properties that deter these bees from over-exploiting it. Previous studies have proposed that the conspicuous spines on Asteraceae pollen grains might serve as a deterrent against exploitation, but these studies have not separated the effects of pollen morphology from those of pollen chemical composition. Here, we assessed whether Asteraceae pollen spines are detrimental to generalist bees independently of any effects of pollen chemistry. To do so, we administered three pollen diet treatments to queenless bumble bee microcolonies: one treatment incorporated sporopollenin exine "shells" extracted from spinous (echinate) sunflower pollen; a second incorporated chemically identical shells from non-spinous mixed pollen; and the third was a control diet with no added exine. We found that the presence of pollen spines in the diet significantly reduced larval growth, beyond the reduction caused by adding exine to the diet. However, we observed no effect of pollen spines on the survival of adult workers or larvae, nor did we find substantially increased intestinal damage in adults. Our results show that Asteraceae pollen spines impair larval development of generalist bumble bees, but further investigation is required to elucidate the mechanism behind this phenomenon. Many bee species are dietary specialists and restrict their pollen foraging to a subset of the available flowers. However, the reasons for specialization—and the reasons certain plant taxa support numerous specialists—are often unclear. Many bees specialize on the plant family Asteraceae, despite evidence its pollen is a poor food for non-specialists. Here, we studied six mason bee (Osmia) species, including three Asteraceae specialists, to test whether observed pollen-usage patterns reflect larval nutritional requirements, to investigate what aspects of Asteraceae pollen make it unsuitable for non-specialists, and to understand how Asteraceae specialists tolerate their seemingly low-quality diet. We reared larval bees on host and nonhost pollen and found that Asteraceae specialists could develop on nonhost provisions, but that other bees could not survive on Asteraceae provisions. These effects did not seem related to nutritional deficiencies, since Asteraceae provisions were not amino acid deficient, and we found no consistent differences in digestive efficiency among pollen types. However, Asteraceae specialists completed more foraging flights per larva, generally collected relatively larger provisions, and produced more frass (waste) than the other species, suggesting quantitative compensation for low food quality. Toxins, deficiencies in unmeasured nutrients, or aspects of pollen grain structure might explain poor survival of non-specialists on Asteraceae provisions. Our results suggest that floral host selection by specialist bees is not related to optimizing larval nutrition. We recommend further investigation of host-selection behaviour in adult bees and of pollen digestion in larvae to better understand the evolution of bee–flower associations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Climate warming could disrupt species interactions if organisms' phenologies respond to climate change at different rates. Phenologies of plants and insects can be sensitive to temperature and timing of snowmelt; however, many important pollinators including ground-nesting bees have been little studied in this context. Without knowledge of the environmental cues affecting phenologies of co-occurring species, we have little ability to predict how species assemblages, and species interactions, will be affected by climate change. Here, we studied a hardwood forest understory over six years, to determine how spring temperatures, snowmelt timing, and photoperiod influence the phenology of two spring wildflowers (Anemone spp. and Trillium grandiflorum), activity of ground-nesting bees, and their temporal overlap. Surface degree-day accumulation was a better predictor of phenology for Anemone spp. (plant) and Nomada (bees) than were day of year (a proxy for photoperiod) or snowmelt date, whereas Trillium flowering appeared most sensitive to photoperiodic cues. Activity periods of Andrena and Lasioglossum bees were equally well described by degree-day accumulation and day of year. No taxon's phenology was best predicted by snowmelt date. Despite these differences among taxa in their phenological responses, timing of bee activity and flowering responded similarly to variation in snowmelt date and early spring temperatures. Furthermore, temporal overlap between flowering and bee activity was similar over the years of this study and was unaffected by variability in snowmelt date or temperature. Red flowers are a defining character of the bird-pollination syndrome. Birds do not, however, innately prefer red, suggesting that rather than attracting birds, red flowers may serve to exclude other visitors (e.g., bumblebees). Bees are sometimes considered 'blind' to red, but studies have in fact documented both blue and red preferences in various bee species. These mixed results may be an effect of overly simplistic lab settings. We hypothesized that bees might readily locate red flowers in a simple laboratory environment, but struggle to find the same flowers in a complex, foliated setting. We tested the effects of environmental complexity on visitation to red and blue artificial flowers and on the foraging rate of captive worker bumblebees ( Bombus impatiens). Bees made significantly fewer visits to red flowers when foraging in a complex environment with artificial green foliage, suggesting that red becomes harder to locate in this context than in a simple, leafless environment. Bees also foraged more slowly, on average, in the complex environment, although the difference was apparent only among experienced bees. Our findings provide a possible explanation for previous laboratory tests finding no colour preference in bumblebees. This 'contextual colour-blindness' of bees supports the hypothesis that red evolved as a mechanism for plants to avoid visitation by bees, favouring bird pollination instead. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Plants might be under selection for both attracting efficient pollinators and deterring wasteful visitors. Particular floral traits can act as exploitation barriers by discouraging the unwelcome visitors. In the genus Penstemon, evolutionary shifts from insect pollination to more efficient hummingbird pollination have occurred repeatedly, resulting in the convergent evolution of floral traits commonly present in hummingbird-pollinated flowers. Two of these traits, a reduced or reflexed lower petal lip and a narrow corolla, were found in a previous flight-cage study to affect floral handling time by bumble bees, therefore potentially acting as 'anti-bee' traits affecting preference. To test whether these traits do reduce bumble bee visitation in natural populations, we manipulated these two traits in flowers of bee-pollinated Penstemon strictus to resemble hummingbird-adapted close relatives and measured the preferences of free-foraging bees. Constricted corollas strongly deterred bee visitation in general, and particularly reduced visits by small bumble bees, resulting in immediate specialization to larger, longer-tongued bumble bees. Bees were also deterred-albeit less strongly-by lipless flowers. However, we found no evidence that lip removal and corolla constriction interact to further affect bee preference. We conclude that narrow corolla tubes and reduced lips in hummingbird-pollinated penstemons function as exploitation barriers that reduce bee access to nectaries or increase handling time. Dispersal can be an important determinant of local diversity and species composition, but evidence for effects of the regional species pool on local zooplankton communities has been mixed. Theory and experiments suggest that immigration will be necessary for maintenance of community diversity and functioning during periods of environmental change; conversely, fluctuating resource levels may increase the likelihood of invasion success. We conducted a factorial-design mesocosm experiment to test the effects of a nutrient pulse and weekly immigration from other lakes on the diversity and composition of a pelagic zooplankton community. Contrary to expectations, there were no interactive effects of nutrient enrichment and immigration on any measure of diversity, and the initial shift in community composition in response to the nutrient pulse did not depend on the introduction of new species or genotypes from more productive lakes. Although immigration increased species richness in enclosures, success of most colonising species was poor. However, the dispersal treatment appears to have enabled a stronger predator response to increased herbivore numbers in nutrient-pulsed enclosures, leading to an eventual decline in the abundance of some herbivorous species in response to immigration. We conclude that community invasibility was not influenced by productivity, and that dispersal limitation did not strongly constrain the response of the zooplankton community to our applied disturbance. This indicates an unexpected resistance to change in species composition and diversity in spite of disturbance, and suggests that, in our study system, changes in the abundance of resident species are more important than introductions of new species in the community response to short-term environmental change.
