In the present study, Ti6Al4V samples have been welded under conduction regime by means of a high power diode laser. The main objective of the work has been to determine the actual influence of the surface pre-treatments on the laser welding process. Thus, six different pre-treatments were applied to Ti6Al4V samples before performing bead-on-plate and butt welding treatments. The depth, width, microstructure, and microhardness of the different weld zones were deeply analyzed. Grinding, sandblasting, and chemical cleaning pre-treatments lead to welds with the highest depth values, presenting high joint strengths. Treatments based on the application of dark coatings generate welds with lower penetration and worse mechanical properties, specially the graphite-based coating. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A spectroscopic study of the kinetic interaction between protein and gold nanoparticles is presented here. Mie scattering in conjunction with excitation of surface plasmons on the surface of the nanoparticles allows access to kinetic information regarding the interactions. The influence of the geometrical shape and size of the nanoparticles regarding the binding of a protein is investigated. Spherical nanoparticles of 60 and 100 nm diameters as well as ellipsoidal (rod-shaped) particles of dimension 20 by 60 nm for the minor and major axes respectively have been used. By fitting the experimental data with theoretical predictions, the size of the nanoparticle and the distribution in the sample, the shape, the influence of sedimentation and the necessary kinetic parameters have been determined. Pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to 2.45 GHz CW radiation for 3 h daily from day 4 through day 20 of pregnancy at an average power density of 10.3 mW/cm. At 2, 10, 20, and 30 d postpartum, several aspects of peripheral blood hematology of male and female pups were examined. No effects were noted on pregnancy rate or litter size; however, pup weight was reduced. Also, the white blood cell numbers were lower in male and female pups exposed to microwave radiation and the differential cell counts were altered in the female pups at 10 d postpartum. Hepatic lysosomes were exposed in vitro to microwave radiation (2450 MHz) either prior to or simultaneously with treatment with retinol (vitamin A), and the release of the lysosomal enzymes, β-glucuronidase, acid phosphatase, and cathepsin D, determined. A 60-min microwave exposure (10 or 100 mW/g) of retinol-treated lysosomes had no effect on the amount of release of β-glucuroni-dase, cathepsin D, or acid phosphatase. In addition, 10 and 100 mW/g irradiation of lysosome fractions for 40 min prior to a 20-min retinol and microwave treatment, had no influence on the release of these enzymes. Finally, the effect of microwave radiation on the loss of latency of acid phosphatase and β-glucuronidase from retinol-treated lysosomes was determined. Microwave radiation had no influence on the rate of appearance of these enzymes in the suspending medium. Turkey sperm were exposed to 2.45 GHz microwave radiation in a temperature controlled waveguide apparatus. Temperature was maintained at 40.0 ± 0.5° C. The sperm were exposed for 30 min to a specific absorption rate (SAR) of 1, 10, or 50 mW/g. Before and following microwave exposure the following parameters were examined: percentage viability, percentage abnormal sperm, and release of the enzymes lactate hydrogenase (LDH) and glutamic oxalic transaminase (GOT). The in vitro activity of acetylcholinesterase and creatine phosphokinase was determined during in vitro exposure to 2.45 GHz microwave radiation. The enzyme activities were examined during exposure to microwave radiation at specific absorption rates (SAR) of 1, 10, 50, and 100 mW/g. These specific absorption rates had no effect on the activity of either enzyme when the temperature of the control and exposed samples were similar. An exposure system for examining in vitro effects of microwave irradiation on cellular and subcellar components has been developed. The system was used to test the effect of 2.45-GHz CW microwaves on the release of two lysosomal enzymes. At a specific absorption rate (SAR) of 10, 50 or 100 mW/g (90 min) no effects were noted at 37° C (pH of 7.3) on lysosomal fragility as determined by the release of the lysosomal enzymes cathepsin D and β-glucuronidase. When the medium was adjusted to pH 5.0, microwave irradiation of the lysosomal suspension had no effect on the acid-induced enhancement of release of lysosomal enzymes. The data indicate that microwave irradiation had no labilizing effect on the lysosomal membrane, although other microwave-membrane interactions not associated with enzyme release may occur. Hepatic blood flow was monitored in cats during myocardial ischemia (MI). Increased plasma CPK activity, the S-T segment of the electrocardiogram, and hepatic flow was reduced by 5 h to 40% of control. Somatostatin did not influence the pathologic consequences of hemorrhagic shock, but pancreatic duct ligation prevented the post-oligemic decline of arterial pressure and formation of toxic factors.
