Due to Mediterranean climatic conditions, traditional pluvial agrosystems are widespread along the southern Mediterranean shore and were previously thought to have minimal impact on surface water resources due to low agricultural input levels. However, current pesticide applications are now considered to contribute significantly to the contamination of surface water resources, which may result in severe impacts on biodiversity and the environment. This study examined the presence and mobility risk of pesticides in the surface waters of the Lebna watershed in northeastern Tunisia, a rainfed Mediterranean agricultural region. Water samples were collected from eight hilly reservoirs and the Lebna dam over three farming seasons (2017–2018, 2019–2020, and 2020–2021) and analyzed for 469 pesticide active ingredients (PAIs). According to the field questionnaire, local farmers used 44 PAIs, including 15 herbicides, 21 fungicides, and 8 insecticides. Seventeen pesticide molecules were detected, with glyphosate (1.73 µg L−1) and 2,4-D (0.23 µg L−1) being the most prevalent. Despite toxicity indexes, which classify a threat of pesticides as low to moderate, their concentrations may now exceed European standards for drinking water and endanger aquatic life. According to the Pesticide Impact Rating Index (PIRI), PAIs can be organized into three mobility risk categories: medium to high for 2,4-D and glyphosate, low for five PAIs, and very low for 13 undetected PAIs. This work provides the first assessment of pesticide contamination in surface waters of the Cap Bon region, raising concerns about water quality in a low-input agrochemical system and increasing interest in similar contexts. To evaluate the effects of salinity on the fate of pesticides in a Mediterranean irrigated system, experiments were carried out under laboratory conditions to determine the adsorption, desorption, and mineralization of chlorpyrifos (CPF) and metalaxyl-M (MET) in a soil sample from an irrigated field in northern Tunisia. Adsorption/desorption isotherms and mineralization kinetics data were obtained over a realistic range of salinities via batch equilibrium and incubation techniques. On the basis of the experimental results, MET has a lower sorption capacity than CPF does, and the adsorption data for both compounds were better fitted by the Freundlich equation, with Kf values of 0.477, 0.486, 0.426, 0.444 and 0.474 L kg-1 for MET and 38.994, 39.084, 40.644, 44.055 and 45.185 L kg-1 for CPF at salinities of 0, 1, 2, 5 and 10 g L-1, respectively. According to the mineralization experiments, increasing salinity increased the half-lives of both pesticides. For MET, the DT50 values in unsterilized soil were 206.68, 220.74, 222.16, and 238.73 days, and those in sterilized soil were 2772.58, 4077.33, 6301.33, and 8664.33 days at salinities of 0, 1, 2, 5, and 10 g L⁻1, respectively. For CPF, the DT50 values were 115.52, 138.62, 157.53, and 177.73 days in unsterilized soil and 346.57, 533.19, 693.14, and 990.21 days in sterilized soil. In terms of leaching behavior, the calculated groundwater ubiquity score (GUS) values for the MET and CPF indicate that the MET is classified as a leacher and that the CPF is classified as a nonleacher. In semiarid regions, dams are useful for surface water storage, sediment sequestration, and aquifer recharge. Built in 1987 on the Cap Bon peninsula (in northeastern Tunisia), the Lebna Dam is considered a good example of a multifunctional reservoir. The dam feeds two important irrigation networks, stores large sediment quantities, and allows a significant recharge flow to the underlying aquifer. This work suggests new leakage flow and dam–aquifer interaction characterizations through the development of an approach that combines a water balance calculation, geological field observations, groundwater monitoring, and geophysical research. The hydrological balance calculation performed over the monitoring period (1990–2017) shows that an estimated water volume of 3.7 mm3 year−1 has leaked from the Lebna reservoir to the coastal aquifer. Geological mapping of the Lebna Dam basin in summer 2019 revealed the existence of permeable layers of sands to sandstones exposed along the southern banks of the reservoir and extending to an elevation that included the water level when the dam is full; these rocks outcrop at approximately 16 m.a.s.l. A geophysical survey based on 67 vertical electrical soundings and 8 electrical resistivity tomography profiles in the area downstream of the reservoir was carried out to identify the lateral continuity of the recharge zones. Piezometric campaigns consisting of four field surveys in 2019 and 2020 were conducted in the region downstream of Lebna Dam, consisting of 71 water well samples. The soils of the Mediterranean Basin are the products of soil processes that have been governed by a unique convergence of highly differentiated natural and anthropogenic drivers. These soils are expected to be dramatically affected by future climate and societal changes. These changes imply that suitable adaptive management strategies for these resources cannot simply be transposed from experiments that are performed in other regions of the world. Following a framework that considers the chain of “drivers-soil process-soil capital-ecosystem services/disservices,” the paper review the research undertaken in the Mediterranean area on three types of Mediterranean soil degradation than can be expected under global change: (i) soil losses due to the increase of drought and torrential rainfall; (ii) soil salinization due the increase of droughts, irrigation, and sea level; and (iii) soil carbon stock depletion with the increase of temperature and droughts. The possible strategies for mitigating each of these degradations have been largely addressed and are still studied in current research projects. They should include changes in agricultural practices, soil water management, and vegetal material. As a pre-requisite for the site-specific adaptations of such mitigation strategies within viable Mediterranean agrosystems, it is highlighted that methodological advances are necessary in integrated assessment of agricultural systems and in finer resolution soil mapping. Purpose: Salinisation is a threat not only to arable land but also to freshwater resources. Nevertheless, salinisation impacts have been rarely and only partially included in life cycle assessment (LCA) so far. The objectives of this review paper were to give a comprehensive overview of salinisation mechanisms due to human interventions, analyse the completeness, relevance and scientific robustness of existing published methods addressing salinisation in LCA and provide recommendations towards a comprehensive integration of salinisation within the impact modelling frameworks in LCA. Methods: First, with the support of salinisation experts and related literature, we highlighted multiple causes of soil and water salinisation and presented induced effects on human health, ecosystems and resources. Second, existing life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) methods addressing salinisation were analysed against the International Reference Life Cycle Data System analysis grid of the European Commission. Third, adopting a holistic approach, the modelling options for salinisation impacts were analysed in agreement with up-to-date LCIA frameworks and models. Results and discussion: We proposed a categorisation of salinisation processes in four main types based on salinisation determinism: land use change, irrigation, brine disposal and overuse of a water body. For each salinisation type, key human management and biophysical factors involved were identified. Although the existing methods addressing salinisation in LCA are important and relevant contributions, they are often incomplete with regards to both the salinisation pathways they address and their geographical validity. Thus, there is a lack of a consistent framework for salinisation impact assessment in LCA. In analysing existing LCIA models, we discussed the inventory and impact assessment boundary options. The land use/land use change framework represents a good basis for the integration of salinisation impacts due to a land use change but should be completed to account for off-site impacts. Conversely, the land use/land use change framework is not appropriate to model salinisation due to irrigation, overuse of a water body and brine disposal. For all salinisation pathways, a bottom-up approach describing the environmental mechanisms (fate, exposure and effect) is recommended rather than an empirical or top-down approach because (i) salts and water are mobile and theirs effects are interconnected; (ii) water and soil characteristics vary greatly spatially; (iii) this approach allows the evaluation of both on- and off-site impacts and (iv) it is the best way to discriminate systems and support a reliable eco-design. Conclusions: This paper highlights the importance of including salinisation impacts in LCA. Much research effort is still required to include salinisation impacts in a global, consistent and operational manner in LCA, and this paper provides the basis for future methodological developments. High fertilizer input is necessary to sustain high yields in oil palm agroecosystems, but it may endanger neighboring aquatic ecosystems when excess nutrients are transported to waterways. In this study, the hydrochemical dynamics of groundwater and streams under baseflow conditions were evaluated with bi-monthly measurements for 1 year on 16 watersheds. Hydrochemical measurements were related to the spatial distribution of soil and fertilization practices across a landscape of 100 km, dominated by oil palm cultivation, in Central Sumatra, Indonesia. The low nutrient concentrations recorded in streams throughout the landscape indicated that the mature oil palm plantations in this study did not contribute to eutrophication of aquatic ecosystems. This was ascribed to high nutrient uptake by oil palm, a rational fertilizer program, and dilution of nutrient concentrations due to heavy rainfall in the study area. Soil type controlled dissolved inorganic N and total P fluxes, with greater losses of N and P from loamy-sand uplands than loamy lowlands. Organic fertilization helped to reduce nutrient fluxes compared to mineral fertilizers. However, when K inputs exceeded the oil palm requirement threshold, high K export occurred during periods when groundwater had a short residence time. For higher nutrient use efficiency in the long term, the field-scale fertilizer management should be complemented with a landscape-scale strategy of fertilizer applications that accounts for soil variability.
