Landfill leachate and domestic sewage decompose and react with the silty clay liner when there is seepage of waste. Municipal waste contaminants have important impacts on the leachate and chemical reaction, and therefore, the interactive effect of municipal waste seepage and chemical reaction on the changes in the properties of silty clay. In this study, acetic acid (CH3COOH) and calcium carbonate (Ca-CO3) are used as the seepage fluids to examine the chemical interaction between the leachate and the changes in silty clay and provide a better understanding of the changes due to the interactive effect of municipal waste seepage and chemical reaction on the changes in the properties of silty clay as well as the interactive process. The results show that the interactive process of municipal waste seepage and chemical reaction can be primarily examined as three stages: seepage, mixing of the leachate and silty clay, and chemical contamination. Among the many factors, the type of seepage medium has the most impact on the silty clay properties in terms of the interactive effect between municipal waste seepage and chemical reaction. Perovskite-structure Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 ferroelectric thin films were fabricated on fluorine doped tin oxide substrate by sol-gel method and then followed by a facile hot plate annealing at low temperature of 550 °C. With the increase of the annealing residence time from 2 to 40 min, phase transformation from pyrochlore to pure perovskite occurred. The obtained films exhibited excellent transmittance in the range of the visible light. With the annealing residence time became longer, the optical band-gap of the thin films became wider. Dielectric permittivity and remnant polarization value increased with the incremental annealing residence time to 40 min and then decreased for the sample annealded for 60 min. The highest dielectric permittivity and remnant polarization were observed for the thin films annealed at 550 °C for 40 min. The values of remnant polarization and coercive field for PZT film annealed for 40 min were 40.3 µC/cm2 and 228 kV/cm, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The research aimed to provide sectional anatomic and three-dimensional (3D) virtual anatomic bases for imaging diagnosis and surgical operation by the use of data from the heart of the first Chinese digitized Visible Human. Data from the series of thin sections of the heart were analyzed and input into an SGI workstation, and 3D reconstruction and virtualization of the heart were performed. Each image of sectional anatomy was clear and the 3D structures of the heart were reconstructed in their entirety. All reconstructed structures can be displayed by multiple structural and color modes, individually or jointly, and can be rotated continuously in any plane. The model of the virtual heart clearly showed fine structures of the heart in random orientation. The dataset of the sectional anatomy provides a fine and integrated morphologic base for imaging diagnosis. The 3D reconstructed images clearly show the internal and entire structures of the heart. To build a digitized visible model of the parapharyngeal space of the Chinese Visible Human and to provide a sectional anatomic basis for radiological and clinical diagnosis of the parapharyngeal space, sectional anatomy data of the parapharyngeal space were selected from the Chinese Visible Human male and female to compare with MR imaging findings in the axial planes. From these data the parapharyngeal space and surrounding structures were segmented. They were then reconstructed in three dimensions on PC. In the axial planes of the sectional anatomy and MR imaging, the shape, content and relations of the parapharyngeal space were clearly displayed and the dominant plane for showing the parapharyngeal space was elicited. The three-dimensional reconstructed images displayed perfectly the anatomic relationships of the parapharyngeal space, parotid, muscles, mandible and vessels. All reconstructed structures can be displayed singly, in groups or as a whole; any diameter or angle of the reconstructed structures can be easily measured. The Chinese Visible Human male and female data set can provide complete and accurate data. The digitized model of the parapharyngeal space and its surroundings offers unique insights into the complex anatomy of the area, providing morphologic data for imaging diagnosis and surgery of the parapharyngeal space. The article reports on polychiorinated biphenyls in Taiwanese primipara human milk and associated factors. Halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons such as polychiorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are lipophilic, anthropogenic, and toxic chemicals. PCBs had been used in various commercial mixtures, such as transformers, capacitors, non-flammable oils, heat transfer media and paints. These organochlorine compounds persist in the environment and enter the food chain. After consumption, they accumulate in fatty tissues of animals and humans.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) with the liable 2,3,6-substitution are important components of certain commercial mixtures and frequently detected in biota, but little is known about their enzyme induction abilities and possible endocrine-disrupting effects. CB 132 (2,2′,3,3′,4,6′-hexachlorophenyl) and CB 149 (2,2′3,4′,5′,6-hexachlorophenyl) were investigated in weanling female rats dosed intraperitoneally on days 21 and 22 and killed on day 24 of age. Uterotropic response, serum thyroid hormone, and hepatic enzyme induction were examined in prepubertal female rats treated with these two environmentally relevant 2,3,6-substituted chlorobiphenyl (CB) congeners from 8 mg/kg to 96 mg/kg. The readily metabolized CB 132 did not cause any significant increase in all endpoints measured in the present study. On the other hand, CB 149 was a weak PROD and BROD inducer and a modest depleter of serum thyroxine in prepubertal female rats. The finding of thyroid hormone disruption by CB 149 may lead to biologically significant neurobehavioral and neurochemical changes in developing animals via milk lactation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Human urine contains several macromolecules which inhibit calcium oxalate crystallization. Osteopontin (or uropontin), a secreted phosphoglycoprotein with the amino acid sequence Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) and high affinity to hydroxyapatite, is one such inhibitor. To investigate the action of this protein on renal stone formation, the expression osteopontin gene in normal and chemically induced urolithiasis rat kidney was compared at both mRNA and protein levels. Northern blot analysis shown a significant increase of osteopontin mRNA level in stone-forming rat kidney compared with normal ones. In an in situ hybridization study, we localized the transcripts of the osteopontin gene in epithelial cells of both distal and collective tubules, and found a remarkably strong signal in stone-forming rats. The amount and distribution of the protein in kidney from immunocytochemistry staining showed the same pattern as seen in situ hybridization. These findings indicate that osteopontin may be an important macromolecule in the normal endogenous defence against the formation of urinary calculi. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using 5% ethanol as a deciliating agent, 20 m m colchicine to prevent reciliation and 1 m m amiloride to affect ion fluxes in Paramecium we examined the compartmentation and function of Ca2+ fluxes employing the biosynthesis of cGMP and the stereotypic swimming behavior as indicators for Ca2+ entry. As a function of extracellular Ca2+ Paramecia responded to colchicine and amiloride with a short-lived ciliary augmentation (fast swimming) which indicated hyperpolarization, and formation of cGMP, i.e., the reported hyperpolarization-activated Ca2+ inward current in the somatic membrane is coupled to intracellular generation of cGMP. This is comparable to the coupling of the depolarization-activated, ciliary Ca2+ inward current and ciliary cGMP formation. Ethanol-deciliated cells and ethanol-treated, yet ciliated control cells did not respond to a depolarization with backward swimming or formation of cGMP. Both responses recovered with similar kinetics. A persistent effect of an ethanol exposure on the axonemal apparatus or on guanylyl cyclase activity of ciliated control cells was excluded using permeabilized cells and cell-free enzyme, respectively. Further, in the presence of 20 m m colchicine ethanol-treated cells only recovered the depolarization-dependent avoiding reaction whereas the formation of cGMP remained depressed, i.e., the drug dissected both responses. Similarly, ethanol exposure of Paramecia did not affect the fast swimming response towards the hyperpolarizing agent amiloride whereas the cGMP formation was abrogated and recovered over a period of 7 hr, i.e., amiloride dissected the hyperpolarization-elicited behavioral response from the intracellular cGMP formation. The data demonstrate that in Paramecium depolarization- and hyperpolarization-stimulated behavioral responses and cGMP formation are not coupled. In 1979, a mass poisoning of more than 2000 people occurred in central Taiwan due to consumption of rice-bran oil contaminated with PCBs and their heat-degraded byproducts. The incident was later referred to as Yucheng (oil disease). Serum samples from 56 women with the 1979exposure were collected in February 1992 and analyzed for their contaminant content using sample enrichment and isotope dilution mass spectrometry. In most of the samples, levels of PCDFs and PCBs were detectable, and the median values of 2,3,4,7,8-PCDFs and 1,2,3,4,7,8-PCDFs were 1,030 and 2,220 ng/kg serum lipid, respectively. The median level of the total PCBs on a whole weight basis was 8,730 ng/kg. The PCB/PCDF concentrations in Yucheng women 14 years after the toxic exposure were still one to two orders of magnitude higher than controls. Concentrations of PCB levels in 1992 were positively correlated with the 1980-1981 measured PCB levels in these women and both PCBs and PCDFs were negatively correlated with the total duration when these women breast fed their children between 1979 and 1992. It is concluded that serum levels of congener-specific PCBs/PCDFs in exposed women are good indicators of previous exposure and may provide important information for more reliable estimation of dose-response relationship.
