Objectives: Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) has a cardiovascular protective effect by preventing abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) formation. However, it is unclear at what point the agent should be administered to achieve the optimal effect. In this study, we aimed to determine whether administering the GLP-1 receptor agonist liraglutide during the earlier stages would more efficiently inhibit AAA progression in mice. Methods: Depending on the group, mice were given a daily dose of 300 μg/kg liraglutide for 28 days at 7, 14, and 28 days after aneurysm induction. The morphology of the abdominal aorta was monitored using 7.0 T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) during the administration of liraglutide. After 28 days of administration, the AAA dilatation ratio was calculated, and histopathological examination was performed. Oxidative stress levels were evaluated by the expression of malondialdehyde (MDA) and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). The inflammatory response was also evaluated. Results: Liraglutide treatment led to a decrease in AAA formation, including a reduction in abdominal aorta expansion, elastin degradation in the elastic laminae, and vascular inflammation caused by leukocyte infiltration. The expression of MDA and the activity of MMPs (MMP-2, MMP-9) also decreased. Notably, administering liraglutide during the early stages resulted in a significant reduction in the dilatation rate of the aortic wall, as well as in MDA expression, leukocyte infiltration, and MMP activity in the vascular wall. Conclusions: The GLP-1 receptor agonist liraglutide was found to inhibit AAA progression in mice by exerting anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, particularly during the early stages of AAA formation. Objectives: To assess the scan time, image quality, and diagnostic performance of self-navigated coronary MR angiography (SN-CMRA) for coronary aneurysm (CAA) detection in Kawasaki disease (KD) patients and compare it with diaphragm-navigated CMRA (DN-CMRA). Materials and methods: SN-CMRA and DN-CMRA were performed on 76 pediatric patients with KD (48 males, 6.75 ± 3.59 years). Thirty-three of whom underwent coronary CT angiography (CCTA)/invasive coronary angiography (ICA). The scan time and qualitative and quantitative image quality assessment were compared between the two sequences. The diagnostic performance for CAA detection by the two approaches using CCTA/ICA as the reference standard was compared on per-patient, per-vessel, and per-segment basis. Results: The scan time of SN-CMRA was significantly shorter than that of DN-CMRA (7.49 ± 2.31 min vs. 10.03 ± 4.47 min, p < 0.001). There was no difference in overall and segmental image quality to reach the clinical diagnostic criteria between the two sequences (all p > 0.05). No significant difference in vessel length of the three main coronary arteries was found between the two approaches (all p > 0.05). Moreover, SN-CMRA showed no difference from DN-CMRA in contrast ratio of blood-myocardium (1.25 (interquartile range [IQR], 1.06 to 1.51) vs. 1.18 (IQR, 0.95 to 1.64), p = 0.706). There was no difference in the diagnostic accuracy of SN-CMRA and DN-CMRA for CAA detection on per-patient, per-vessel, or per-segment basis (all p > 0.05). Conclusion: SN-CMRA at 3T showed reliable diagnostic performance and application value for CAA detection in children with KD. Compared with DN-CMRA, SN-CMRA can simplify the scanning procedure and shorten the scan time, achieving comparable image quality and diagnostic accuracy. Clinical relevance statement: Coronary aneurysm in children with Kawasaki disease (KD) can be detected by self-navigated coronary MR angiography (CMRA) non-invasively and without radiation, achieving comparable image quality and diagnostic performance as diaphragm-navigated CMRA while shortening scanning time. Objective: This study aimed to assess biventricular function and mechanics in patients with the chronic high-altitude disease (CHAD) using cardiovascular MRI and explore the possible risk factors associated with ventricular remodeling. Methods: In this prospective study, consecutive CHAD patients and healthy controls at high-altitude (HA) and at sea level (SL) underwent cardiovascular MRI. Right ventricular (RV) and left ventricular (LV) function and global strain parameters were compared. To identify risk factors associated with ventricular remodeling, multiple linear regression analyses were used. Results: A total of 33 patients with CHAD (42.97 years ± 11.80; 23 men), 33 HA (41.18 years ± 8.58; 21 men), and 33 SL healthy controls (43.48 years ± 13.40; 21 men) were included. A Significantly decreased biventricular ejection fraction was observed in patients (all p < 0.05). Additionally, the HA group displayed lower magnitudes of biventricular longitudinal peak strain (PS) (RV, − 13.67% ± 4.05 vs. − 16.22% ± 3.03; LV, − 14.68% ± 2.20 vs. − 16.19% ± 2.51; both p < 0.05), but a higher LV circumferential PS (− 20.74% ± 2.02 vs. − 19.17% ± 2.34, p < 0.05) than the SL group. Moreover, multiple linear regression analyses revealed that HGB (β = 0.548) was related to the LV remodeling index, whereas BUN (β = 0.570) was associated with the RV remodeling index. Conclusions: With the deterioration of RV function in patients with CHAD, LV function was also impaired concomitantly. Hypoxia-induced erythrocytosis may contribute to LV impairment, while BUN was considered an independent risk factor for RV remodeling. Little is known about the global prevalence of congenital hypothyroidism (CH), though it is known to vary across countries and time periods. This meta-analysis aims to estimate the global and regional prevalence of CH among births between 1969 and 2020. PubMed, Web of Sciences, and Embase databases were searched for relevant studies between January 1, 1975, and March 2, 2020. Pooled prevalence was calculated using a generalized linear mixed model, and expressed as a rate per 10,000 neonates. The meta-analysis involved 116 studies, which analyzed 330,210,785 neonates, among whom 174,543 were diagnosed with CH. The pooled global prevalence of CH from 1969 to 2020 was 4.25 (95% confidence interval (CI) 3.96–4.57). The geographic region with highest prevalence was the Eastern Mediterranean (7.91, 95% CI 6.09–10.26), where the prevalence was 2.48-fold (95% CI 2.04–3.01) that in Europe. The national income level with the highest prevalence was upper-middle (6.76, 95% CI 5.66–8.06), which was 1.91-fold (95% CI 1.65–2.22) that in high-income countries. Global prevalence of CH was 52% (95% CI 4–122%) higher in 2011–2020 than in 1969–1980, after adjusting for geographic region, national income level, and screening strategy. Conclusion: The global prevalence of CH increased from 1969 to 2020, which may reflect the implementation of national neonatal screening, neonatal testing for thyroid-stimulating hormone, and a lowering of the diagnostic level of this hormone. Additional factors are likely to be driving the increase, which should be identified in future research. Objective: To describe the disease progression of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) in the pelvic and thigh muscles over 1-year using multiple-parameter quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (qMRI), and to determine the most responsive muscle and predict subclinical disease progression in functionally stable patients. Methods: Fifty-four DMD patients (mean age 8.9 ± 2.5, range 5–15 years) completed baseline and 1-year follow-up qMRI examinations/biomarkers [3-point Dixon/fat fraction (FF); T1 mapping/T1; T2 mapping/T2]. Meanwhile, clinical assessments [NorthStar ambulatory assessment (NSAA) score] and timed function tests were performed in DMD patients. Twenty-four healthy male controls (range 5–15 years) accomplished baseline qMRI examinations. Group differences were compared using the Wilcoxon test. The standardized response mean (SRM) was taken as the responsiveness to the disease progression index. Results: FF, T1, and T2 in all DMD age subgroups changed significantly over 1-year (P < 0.05). Even in functionally stable patients (NSAA score increased, unchanged, or decreased by 1-point) over 1-year, significant increases in FF and T2 and decreases in T1 were observed in gluteus maximus (GMa), gluteus medius, vastus lateralis, and adductor magnus (P < 0.05). Overall, the SRM of FF, T1, and T2 was all the highest in GMa, which were 1.25, − 0.92, and 0.93, respectively. Conclusions: qMRI biomarkers are responsive to disease progression and can also detect subclinical disease progression in functionally stable DMD patients over 1-year. GMa is the most responsive to disease progression of all the muscles analyzed. Olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) is a rare malignant neuroectodermal tumor of the nasal cavity. Olfactory neuroblastoma centered in the posterior right orbit with prominent orbital protrusion is even rare. Grading ONB is extremely important as individualized treatment plans must be formulated according to tumor grade. We report the case of a 67-year-old female who presented with the chief complaints of persistent nasal congestion with intermittent epistaxis and unilateral proptosis over the past five years. Radiological imaging was suggestive of a large heterogeneous mass in the right superior nasal cavity with extensions into the right medial orbit, nasopharynx, the right maxillary sinus, the anterior cranial fossa, right ethmoidal, frontal and bilateral sphenoidal sinuses, as well as into the right frontal lobe. Assessment of the radiologic features revealed the diagnostic possibility of olfactory neuroblastoma. A nasopharyngeal biopsy confirmed an olfactory neuroblastoma. Frontal osteoplastic craniotomy and excision of the intracranial part of the tumor from above and transnasal endoscopic removal of the mass in the nasal cavities, paranasal sinuses and right medial orbit from below was done. Evaluation of histopathological characteristics and immunohistochemical findings revealed a diagnosis of WHO grade IV olfactory neuroblastoma. Because of poor economic condition, the patient did not take adjuvant radiotherapy and chemoradiation and post-operative examination. We report a huge ONB centered in the posterior right orbit with prominent orbital protrusion. Magnetic resonance image and computed tomography are helpful for evaluating the appearance and the extent of ONB, as well as grading this tumor, which may aid therapeutic decisions and improve survival. Although accumulating evidence has been elucidating the neuronal basis of refractory/nonrefractory major depressive disorder (rMDD/nrMDD), the results are inconsistent, and little is known about the distinct neural mechanisms underlying rMDD. Here, we explored the convergent/divergent brain networks between first-episode MDD subtypes using the resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) approach. In total, 33 healthy controls (HCs), 31 first-episode rMDD patients and 33 first-episode nrMDD patients were enrolled and underwent MRI scanning. The left subgenual anterior cingulate cortex (sgACC) was selected as the seed region, and RSFC was employed to evaluate associations between the seed and other regions in the whole brain. Both MDD subtypes exhibited convergent left sgACC-based neural networks, including increased RSFC with the dorsal prefrontal cortex (DPFC) and decreased RSFC with the bilateral orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and right parahippocampus. rMDD patients exhibited increased left sgACC-OFC RSFC relative to nrMDD patients, and RSFC with the bilateral OFC in rMDD patients was negatively correlated with HAMD scores. These findings confirmed our speculation that convergent and divergent neural networks exist between rMDD and nrMDD. Cortical-limbic circuits, especially the prefrontal–limbic circuit, may serve as the convergent dysfunctional neural circuitry in MDD subtypes. As an important biomarker, a unique OFC-sgACC circuit abnormality was identified in rMDD patients, which might help elucidate the underlying mechanism regarding treatment responses in rMDD patients. Clinically, myocardial fibrosis is increasingly being recognized as a new therapeutic target for ischaemic heart diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate whether noninvasive multimodal molecular imaging could be used to dynamically assess whether the combination of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) therapy can synergistically attenuate myocardial fibrosis after myocardial infarction (MI). MI was induced in 28 rats by coronary ligation with subsequent injection of BMSCs/HGF, BMSCs, HGF, or saline into the border zone under echocardiography guidance. The therapeutic procedure and treatment effects were tracked and assessed using bioluminescence imaging (BLI) and cardiac magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Four weeks after transplantation therapy, cardiac MR imaging demonstrated that BMSC/HGF-treated animals showed better ejection fractions (p < 0.001) and smaller scar sizes (p < 0.001) than those treated with BMSCs or HGF alone. Histopathological and immunohistochemical results showed less collagen deposition, increased microvessel densities and more regenerative cardiomyocytes in the BMSC/HGF-treated animals than in those receiving HGF or BMSCs alone (all p < 0.05). Multimodal molecular imaging allows a specific and timely strategy to be established for dynamically tracking treatment and noninvasively assessing the therapeutic effects. Under echocardiography guidance, intramyocardial injection of transfected HGF with BMSCs can enhance cell survival, improve cardiac function, stimulate angiogenesis, and reduce myocardial fibrosis in a post-MI rat model.
