Variations in immune cell counts can trigger depressive symptoms, while physical activity effectively reduces the risk and severity of depressive symptoms. This study, based on the NHANES database, analyzes the relationship between neutrophil count and depressive symptoms and explores the moderating effect of physical activity on this relationship. Cross-sectional data from the NHANES database were extracted, including immune cell counts, PHQ-9 scores for self-assessment of depressive symptoms, and Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) scores (PA). The interrelations among physical activity, neutrophil count, and depressive symptoms were analyzed. After controlling for confounding factors, neutrophil count was found to have a significant role in identifying depressive symptoms with an odds ratio (OR) [95% Confidence Interval (CI)] = 1.13 [1.02, 1.251]; the moderating effect of physical activity on the impact of neutrophil count on depressive symptoms was statistically significant (coefficient = -0.0028, P < 0.05). Neutrophil count may be a significant factor in identifying depressive symptoms in adults. The widespread use of bisphenol A (BPA) has resulted in the emergence of new pollutants in various environments, particularly concentrated in sewage sludge. This study investigated the effects of BPA on sludge anaerobic digestion, focusing specifically on the interaction of microbial communities and their metabolic responses. While the influence of BPA on methane accumulation is not significant, BPA still enhanced the conversion of soluble COD, protein, and polysaccharides. BPA also positively influenced the hydrolysis-acidogenesis process, leading to 17% higher concentrations of volatile fatty acids (VFAs). Lower BPA levels (0.2–0.5 mg/kg dw) led to decreased hydrolysis and acidogenesis gene abundance, indicating metabolic inhibition; conversely, higher concentrations (1–5 mg/kg dw) increased gene abundance, signifying metabolic enhancement. Diverse methane metabolism was observed and exhibited alterations under BPA exposure. The presence of BPA impacted both the diversity and composition of microbial populations. Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Chloroflexi dominated in BPA-treated groups and varied in abundance among different treatments. Changes of specific genera Sedimentibacter, Fervikobacterium, Blvii28, and Coprothermobacter in response to BPA, affecting hydrolysis and acetogenesis. Archaeal diversity declined while the hydrogenotrophic methanogen Methanospirillum thrived under BPA exposure. BPA exposure enabled microorganisms to form structured community interaction networks and boost their metabolic activities during anaerobic digestion. The study also observed the enrichment of BPA biodegradation pathways at high BPA concentrations, which could interact and overlap to ensure efficient BPA degradation. The study provides insights into the digestion performance and interactions of microbial communities to BPA stress and sheds light on the potential effect of BPA during anaerobic digestion. The soil contamination around smelting sites shows high spatial heterogeneity. This study investigated the impacts of distance, land use/cover types, land slopes, wind direction, and soil properties on the distribution and ecological risk of trace metals in the soil around a copper smelter. The results demonstrated that the average concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn were 248.0, 16.8, 502.4, 885.6, and 250.2 g mg kg−1, respectively, higher than their background values. The hotspots of trace metals were primarily distributed in the soil of smelting production areas, runoff pollution areas, and areas in the dominant wind direction. The concentrations of trace metals decreased with the distance to the smelting production area. An exponential decay regression revealed that, depending on the metal species, the influence distances of smelting emissions on trace metals in soil ranged from 450 to 1000 m. Land use/cover types and land slopes significantly affected trace element concentrations in the soil around the smelter. High concentrations of trace metals were observed in farmland, grassland, and flatland areas. The average concentrations of trace metals in the soil decreased in the order of flat land > gentle slope > steep slope. Soil pH values were significantly positively correlated with Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, and As, and SOM was significantly positively correlated with Cd, Pb, and Zn in the soil. Trace metals in the soil of the study area posed a significant ecological risk. The primary factors influencing the distribution of ecological risk, as determined by the Ctree analysis, were land slope, soil pH, and distance to the source. Purpose: Crop contamination with cadmium (Cd) poses a serious health risk in some regions of the world. A field experiment involving a cropping pattern of rice (Oryza sativa L.) and rape (Brassica napus L.) was conducted over five cropping seasons, with annual application of mixed amendments, to assess the feasibility of immobilizing bioavailable Cd in soil. Materials and methods: From April 2016 to March 2018, a field trial with a rice-rape rotation was conducted. Mixed amendments, including lime + organic fertilizer (LO), lime + organic fertilizer + calcium-magnesium phosphate fertilizer (LOC), lime + organic fertilizer + sepiolite (LOS), and lime + organic fertilizer + calcium-magnesium phosphate fertilizer + sepiolite (LOCS), were added to the Cd-contaminated agricultural soil. Results: The mixed amendments significantly reduced soil Cd bioavailability and thus notably reduced Cd concentrations in brown rice by 51.5–80.2% during the years 2016–2018 with annual application. However, soil available nitrogen contents decreased by 18.5–44.6% in the third year with the amendments applied. At the same time, the grain yields significantly decreased by 37.9–57.0% for both rape and rice, except for the continual application of LOCS. Thus, LOCS is a more optimal measure to ensure the yield and quality of rice and rape in Cd-contaminated agricultural soil when mixed amendments are continuously applied. Conclusion: The mixture of organic and inorganic amendments works well for soil Cd immobilization and crop Cd reduction, while it decreases crop yields, except for LOCS. This work studied the vertical migration characteristics of Cd in soil profiles from a zinc smelting site under the influence of simulated reclaimed water containing NaCl and Na2SO4. The isothermal adsorption curves of Cd in the soils of miscellaneous fill and weathered slate well fitted the Freundlich and Langmuir models, with R2 ranging from 0.991 to 0.998. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cd in the soils decreased significantly under the salt ion treatments with NaCl and Na2SO4. After leaching, the Cd concentrations in the leachates and Cd contents in the subsoil layers of 10–60 cm followed the order NaCl treatment > Na2SO4 treatment > CK (p < 0.05), suggesting that the salt ions promoted the vertical migration of exogenous Cd. The proportion of coarse particles (> 0.02 mm) decreased, while that of fine particles (< 0.02 mm) increased under salt ion treatments (p < 0.05). The morphological characterization indicated that salt ions accelerated the erosion and fragmentation of coarse particles to form fine particles. The use of reclaimed water to flush smelting sites may increase the risk of Cd migration with small-sized soil particles from the soil to groundwater. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To explore the association between depression and anxiety symptoms among college students and the relationship between the two and physical activity. A cross-sectional study design was used to survey 1790 enrolled university students using the Depression Self-Rating Scale, Anxiety Self-Rating Scale and Physical Activity Rating Scale. 37.75% of male students and 39.73% of female students detected depressive symptoms, 17.65% of male students and 17.86% of female students detected anxiety symptoms, 11.89% of male students and 11.75% of female students detected both depressive and anxiety symptoms. Canonical correlation between depression and anxiety symptoms of college students were significant. The depression and anxiety score of college students in the high level group was significantly lower than that in the low and medium level groups, and no significant difference was found between the low and medium level groups. Affective disorder and anxious mood of male students correlated most closely with intensity, while somatic disorder, psychomotor disorder and depressive psychological disorder correlated most closely with duration. Affective disorder of female students correlated most closely with frequency, depressive psychological disorder and anxious mood correlated most closely with intensity, while premonition of misfortune and frequent urination correlated most closely with duration. Depression and anxiety symptoms of college students were closely related and co-occurrence was common. Students with high level of physical activity had milder symptoms. Fatigue performance is largely dependent on the machined surface integrity of engineering parts. In this paper, effect of cutting steps and directions on machined surface integrity of aluminum–silicon alloy is investigated. Machining induced surface quality under the forward and reverse finish cutting as well as the step-by-step feed cutting method is contrastively analyzed. The results indicate that the final machined surface integrity can be controlled through adjusting the finish cutting steps, and governing finish cutting directions can also be effective when the finish cutting step is fixed. High-machined surface integrity can be obtained when it adopts reverse finishing in first-step while it employs forward finishing in second-step, where there are little micro-defects on the machined surface, relatively low degree of surface hardening and surface residual stress, along with smaller surface roughness, respectively. Moreover, step-by-step feed cutting method can effectively break chips, avoid surface scratching, chips softening, and forming the built-up edge. It can also reduce the degree of elastic–plastic recovery and thermal expansion on the machined surface, improve surface hardness, and obtain surface compressive residual stress. There are many micro-defects on machined surface by single-step feed cutting. However, when the step-by-step feed cutting method is adopted, the forward finishing surface emerges almost no micro-defects, but that of reverse finishing exhibits severe grain breakage. The proposed adjusting method in cutting steps and forward-reverse cutting directions may be of interest to the engineering practice, and will help improving the machined surface quality and fatigue life of aluminum–silicon alloy engineering parts. High levels of manganese (Mn) and other heavy metals from electrolytic manganese residue (EMR) stockpiled would be released into the environment under natural conditions. A batch-leaching test was carried out to investigate the release characteristics of heavy metals from EMR with different storage times under simulated environmental conditions such as acid rain with different pH (3.0, 4.5, 5.6, and 7.0) at contact times of 1, 2, 4, 6, and 12 h; liquid to solid ratio (L/S) (5:1, 10:1, 20:1, and 30:1); and temperature (15, 25, 35, and 45 °C). The results showed that low pH (3.0 and 4.5) and high temperature (35 and 45 °C) could significantly promote heavy metal leaching from EMRs and increasing the L/S ratio above 20:1 mL/g significantly decreased heavy metal leachate concentrations due to dilution effect. Cr, Mn, and Pb concentrations in leachate increased almost continuously throughout the leaching process, while Zn decreased slightly at the 12th hour. Meanwhile, heavy metal concentrations in EMR1 (fresh EMR) were higher than in EMR2 (out stockpiled for more than 3 months). The concentrations of Mn, Pb, and Zn in leachates from EMRs at pH 3.0 and 4.5 leaching far exceeded the allowable maximum discharge concentrations for pollutants of the integrated wastewater discharge standard in China (GB8978–1996) by 57.5–59.0, 1.3–4.3, and 1.1–1.8 and 53.5–56.0, 3.04–7.25, and 1.0–1.91 times, respectively. Additionally, the Mn concentrations from both EMR leachates at pH 7.0 were above the national safe emission threshold. The morphological structure of EMRs changed after leaching, and XRD analysis showed the disappearance of MnO2, SiO2, FeS2, and CaSO4. The XPS revealed that Cr, Mn, Pb, and Zn existed as Cr3+, MnO, PbSO4, and ZnSiO3, respectively, after leaching. The study concluded that Mn, Pb, and Zn from EMRS leached by acid rain might pose a high potential environmental risk. In this work, the removal performance of three environmentally friendly reagents, oxalic acid (OA), citric acid (CA), and a copolymer of maleic and acrylic acid (PMAA), on heavy metals in polluted soil was studied at the optimum conditions and compared their sequenced performance. The results showed that the consecutive washing with the individual acids significantly improved the removal percentage of heavy metals in the soil compared to that of EDTA (10.2%, 71.3%, 29.8%, 61.6%, and 52.4% removal for As, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn, respectively). The removal of As, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in the sequence of CA-OA was 65.6%, 79%, 59.1%, 64.6%, and 63.5%, respectively. In addition, the organic acids had little influence on the soil physicochemical properties after washing with slight reductions of acidity (pH) and soil organic matter (SOM), which are the major determinants of the usability of washed soils for plant growth. The germination rate of Sorghum bicolor in CA-OA-washed soils reached over 70% on the 7th day. CA-OA-washed soils collectively stand out in using washed soils for plant growth with the following advantages: simultaneous removal of cationic and anionic metals, less harmful impact on soil properties, and successful support for the germination of crops. Copper mining has caused serious soil contamination and threaten the balance of underground ecosystem. Effects of metal contamination on the soil microbial community assembly and their multifunctionality are still unclear. In this study, the keystone taxa and microbial metabolic potential of soil microorganisms surrounding a typical copper tailing were investigated. Results showed that pH and metal contents of adjacent soil in copper tailing increased, which largely reduced soil microbial communities' diversity. Metal contaminated soils enriched a group of keystone taxa with metal-tolerance such as Bacteroidota (20–54%) and Firmicutes (24–48%), which were distinct from the uncontaminated background soils that dominated by Proteobacteria (19–24%) and Actinobacteria (13–24%). In the contaminated soils, these keystone taxa were identified as Alistipes, Bacteroides, and Faecalibacterium, suggesting their adaptation to the metal-rich environment. Co-occurrence network analysis showed that the microbial community was loosely connected in the metal contaminated soils with a lower number of nodes and links. Co-occurrence networks further revealed that the dynamics of keystone taxa significantly correlated with copper content. Functional gene analysis of soil microorganisms indicated that metal contamination might inhibit important microbial metabolic potentials, such as secondary metabolites biosynthesis, carbon fixation, and nitrogen fixation. Results also found the flexible adaptation strategies of soil microbial communities to metal-rich environments with metal-resistance or bio-transformation, such as efflux (CusB/CusF/CzsB and pcoB/copB) and oxidation (aoxAB). These findings provide insight into the interaction between keystone taxa and soil environment, which is helpful to reveal the microbial metabolic potential and physiological characteristics in tailing contaminated soils. Intercropping with hyperaccumulators/accumulators is a promising alternative to enhance phytoextraction of heavy metal(loid)s in contaminated soil. In this research, a pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the influences of intercropping As hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata L. with Cd hyperaccumulator Sedum alfredii Hance or accumulator Hylotelephium spectabile (Boreau) H. Ohba on the plant growth, As and Cd phytoextraction, and rhizosphere bacterial microbiota. The results indicated that intercropping can promote the growth of plants. The total biomass of P. vittata, S. alfredii, and H. spectabile in intercropping systems was improved by 19.9–34.1%, 16.8%, and 11.5%, respectively, in comparison with corresponding plant monoculture. The As content in rhizoid and frond of P. vittata when intercropped with S. alfredii was significantly increased by 28.3% and 19.0% (P < 0.05), respectively, as compared with P. vittata monoculture, and this treatment acquired the maximum As and Cd accumulation with 2032 μg·pot−1 and 397 μg·pot−1, respectively. Intercropping enhanced the soil bacterial community diversity. The genera of Lysobacter in P. vittata rhizosphere and Massilia and Arthrobacter in S. alfredii rhizosphere had higher abundance in the intercropping system of P. vittata and S. alfredii. There were significantly positive correlation relationships between Massilia and Arthrobacter with plant Cd content and Lysobacter with plant As content, indicating that they may play important roles in As and Cd phytoextraction. Chinese herbal slices (CHSs) are closely associated to microorganisms, whether they are endophytic or epiphytic in plants, or introduced during processing. In this study, the structures and predicted functions of microbial communities in 150 batches of samples from five types of CHSs were investigated by combining pure culture and 16 S rDNA amplicon sequencing. Bile-salt-tolerant gram-negative bacteria were detected in 56.0% of samples, and Salmonella was detected in two batches of Glycyrrhiza slices and in one batch of Rheum slices. The main genera from the Enterobacteriaceae, Bacillaceae, Fibrobacteraceae, and Pseudomonadaceae families were assessed in typical colonies. Amplicon sequencing identified 1200 bacterial genera, including some pharmacopeial-controlled bacteria and many beneficial endophytes of medicinal plants. Around 65% of the genera co-occurred in all five CHSs. In clustering based on different algorithms, the samples from each CHS type were relatively clustered, with some overlap. Ranked from highest to lowest diversity, the CHSs were Rheum, Angelica, Astragalus, Codonopsis, and Glycyrrhiza. Each CHS had its indicator species. Functional annotations suggest that potential microbial transformation uses CHSs as substrates and microbial communities as transformants. Overall, it was demonstrated that, based on their complementary advantages, high-throughput sequencing technology and traditional pure-culture technology together can fully assess the microbial load of CHSs and reduce the misdetection rate. We observed large microbial communities in typical CHSs, demonstrating differences and similarities among different CHS types. These results provide a reference for establishing new microbial limit criteria for CHSs and highlight the importance of further correlating CHS microbial community structure and function. Soil particle size could intensively impact the Cd adsorption in soils. The adsorption characteristics of Cd on miscellaneous fill (MF) and weathered slate (WS), collected from a zinc smelting site, were studied by batch experiments under conditions of different initial Cd concentrations and soil particle sizes. The results showed that the adsorption kinetics of Cd for soil particles from MF and WS were well fitted with the pseudo-first-order model, and the Cd adsorption isotherms well conformed to the Freundlich model. Soil particle size had an inconspicuous influence on adsorption rate, while the adsorption capacity decreased with particle size increase. The Cd adsorption on soil particles could be due to the exchange with Fe/Al, and -OH/C=O sites were the predominant adsorption sites. Excessive Cd content and high Cd/Zn ratio in rice grains threaten human health. To study the reduction effects of combined soil amendments on Cd content and Cd/Zn ratio in rice planting in soils with different Cd contamination levels, we conducted field trials in three regions of Hunan province, China. Six field treatments were designed in each study area, including control (CK), lime alone (L), lime combined with sepiolite (LS), phosphate fertilizer (LP), organic fertilizer (LO) and phosphate fertilizer + organic fertilizer (LPO). The application of the combined amendments reduced the Cd content in rice grains to less than the Food Health Standard of China (0.2 mg/kg) and the Cd/Zn ratio to less than the safety threshold of 0.015. The average reduction rates of grain Cd content under the combined treatments among the three regions increased with the increase in Cd content in the soil. Meanwhile, the amendments also decreased the soil available Cd and Zn concentration significantly. The LO had the highest efficiency on decreasing Cd content in rice grains among these amendments, which is ranged from 44.6% to 52.8% in the three regions compared with CK. Similarly, high reduction rates of Cd/Zn ratio were found in the LO treatment, with an average value of 57.3% among the three regions. The grain Cd contents and Cd/Zn ratios were significantly correlated with the soil available Cd concentrations, plant uptake factor and the straw to rice grain translocation factor (TFgs) (P < 0.05). Ferromanganese oxides, as abundant minerals in natural waters and soils, would affect the transport and fate of vanadium(V) in the environment. The adsorption behaviour of V(V) on synthesized goethite and birnessite under environmental factors including pH, ionic strength, coexisting substances such as anions, cations, and fulvic acid (FA) was investigated by batch experiments. The results indicated that the kinetics model of V(V) adsorption on goethite and birnessite well fitted with pseudo-second-order, and the adsorption equilibrium was achieved in 60 min and 120 min, respectively. The V(V) adsorption isotherms for goethite and birnessite conformed to the Langmuir isotherm with maximum adsorption amount of 8.24 and 9.11 mg·g–1, respectively. The higher V(V) adsorption capacity on goethite was observed at pH 4–8, while that on birnessite occurred at pH 2 owing to their different point of zero charge pH. The V(V) adsorption amounts of the synthesised materials were decreased with the increase in ionic strength of NaNO3 but increased with the elevating FA concentration in solution. The inhibitory effect on V(V) adsorption was found in the presence of anions of PO43− and SO42−, while cations like Ca2+ and Mg2+ facilitated the adsorption. Woody plants have considerable application potential in the phytoremediation schemes, owing to their long-lived large biomass and prosperous root systems in heavy metal(loid)–contaminated soil. Under greenhouse conditions, the physiological response characteristics and phytoremediation possibility of Morus alba L. and its associated improvement of the bacterial and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) diversities in heavy metal(loid) co-contaminated soils were investigated. The results showed that the cultivated M. alba L. plant exhibited significant tolerance against the heavy metal(loid)s in co-contaminated soil and that the microbial diversities were improved notably. The contents of malondialdehyde (MDA) in M. alba L. leaves decreased with cultivation from 90 to 270 days, while the superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and catalase activities were maintained at normal levels to eliminate the production of lipid peroxides. The chemical compositions (e.g. amino acids, carbohydrates and proteins) in the root of M. alba L. fluctuated slightly throughout the cultivation period. Meanwhile, Cd, Pb and Zn were majorly concentrated in the M. alba L. roots, and the maximum contents were 23.4, 7.40 and 615.5 mg/kg, respectively. According to the polymerase chain reaction–denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) analysis results, the influence of M. alba L. on the rhizosphere AMF community was greater than that on the bacteria community. Meanwhile, the bacterial and AMF Shannon diversity indexes in the contaminated soil were enhanced by 18.7–22.0% and 7.14–16.4%, respectively, with the presence of M. alba L. Furthermore, the correlations between the availability of As, Cd, Pb, and Zn and Shannon diversity indexes of the bacterial and AMF communities were significantly (p < 0.05) positive with the phytoremediation of M. alba L. Therefore, M. alba L. can be suggested as a potential plant candidate for ecological remediation and for simultaneously improving the activity and diversity of microorganisms in contaminated soils. Biodegradable chelator–assisted phytoextraction is an effective method to enhance remediation efficiency of heavy metals. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of S,S-ethylenediamine disuccinic acid (EDDS), citric acid (CA), and oxalic acid (OA) application before planting on the biomass and physiological characteristics of hyperaccumulator Sedum alfredii Hance, and its cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) uptake. The results showed that EDDS and CA slightly inhibited the plant growth, while the 1.0 mmol kg−1 (OA-1) and 2.5 mmol kg−1 OA (OA-2.5) addition produced 55.3% and 35.2% greater shoot biomass compared with the control, which may be related to that OA can produce higher leaf chlorophyll and soluble protein contents, as well as lower concentrations of malondialdehyde. At the same time, the concentrations of Pb and Zn in leaf after OA-2.5 treatment significantly increased by 127% and 28.4%, and the Cd, Pb, and Zn uptake by shoot was obviously enhanced by 21.5%, 117%, and 44.9% for OA-1 addition and by 39.1%, 80.0%, and 58.3% for OA-2.5 addition, respectively, in comparison with the control (P < 0.05). The reductions in available contents of Cd, Pb, and Zn in soil were observed after phytoextraction by Sedum alfredii Hance when OA was treated. To improve the mechanical properties of hot-deformed Nd-Fe-B magnets, anisotropic Nd-Fe-B magnets doped with SiC whiskers were fabricated by hot-pressing and hot-deformation processes. The influence of the SiC whiskers on the microstructure and magnetic and mechanical properties of the Nd-Fe-B magnets was investigated. The bending strength of the hot-deformed Nd-Fe-B magnets reinforced with SiC whiskers first increased and then decreased with increasing SiC whisker content from 0 wt.% to 1.0 wt.%. The composite magnet with 0.5 wt.% SiC whiskers exhibited the highest average bending strength and still retained the maximum energy product of approximately 45.8 MGOe. The morphology of the fracture surface of the magnets revealed that the majority of the SiC whiskers were distributed at intergranular boundaries. The feasibility of anaerobic digestion on the release of biogas and heavy metals from contaminated rice straw pretreated with NaOH solution was studied. The results show that NaOH pretreatment can significantly boost the release of biogas and heavy metals from rice straw using anaerobic digestion. Under the optimal conditions for biomass pretreated 6% (w/w) NaOH with a solid-to-solution ratio of 1:20, total biogas and methane yields of 446.3 mL/g and 263.5 mL/g volatile solids were achieved, which were 22.18% and 41.59% higher than those of the control without NaOH pretreatment, respectively, and the release percentages of Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn from rice straw reached 86.95–97.69%. The release of heavy metals from rice straw can contribute to both the degradation of lignin by NaOH pretreatment and the utilization/transformation of lignocellulose via anaerobic digestion. The acidification levels and total volatile fatty acid contents significantly influence on the release of heavy metals. Based on the Illumina HiSeq sequencing analysis, the dominant phyla in the biogas residues were proteolytic (Bacteroidetes) and hydrogen-producing (Firmicutes) bacteria, while the growth of Methanospirillum and Methanosaeta in anaerobically digested effluent was promoted. A field experiment was performed to study the effects of mixed amendments, namely lime + organic fertilizer (LO), lime + organic fertilizer + calcium-magnesium phosphate fertilizer (LOC), lime + organic fertilizer + sepiolite (LOS), and lime + organic fertilizer + calcium-magnesium phosphate fertilizer + sepiolite (LOCS), on the availability and uptake of Cd from contaminated paddy soil under a rice-rape (Oryza sativa L. and Brassica napus L.) rotation system. The results showed that the grain yields of rice and rape with mixed amendment-treated were slightly influenced, in that the soil pH significantly increased while the DTPA-extractable Cd content of the soil and Cd uptake by the rice and rape were significantly reduced. The uptake of Cd by brown rice decreased significantly (p < 0.05), by 55.9–59.3% and 69.6–75.5% in the 2016 and 2017 crops, respectively, compared with that of the control (CK). The Cd uptake by rapeseeds during the 2017 season observably (p < 0.05) decreased by 38.2 and 29.6% under LO and LOC treatments, respectively. The Cd concentrations in rapeseeds were 0.11–0.18 mg kg−1 under all the treatments except LOCS treatment, which is lower than the National Standard of Pollutants in Food of China (GB 2762-2017, 0.2 mg kg−1). From both economic and food safety standpoints, rape is recommended for Cd-contaminated soil because it has a low Cd accumulation ability. The results showed that the rice-rape rotation combined with LO or LOC application was useful for reducing the Cd content in both rice and rape in Cd-contaminated soil and the effects could be sustained at least for three crop seasons. This study assessed the effectiveness of limestone-montmorillonite-rapeseed residue-Si fertilizer compound amendment on the bioavailability and crop uptake of cadmium (Cd) and enzyme activities in acidic paddy soils. Applying the compound amendment at ratios of 1%-3% increased soil pH by 0.1-1.9 units, decreased leaching ratios of soil Cd 4.0%-22%, and decreased exchangeable and carbonated Cd 42%-55% and 27%-49%, respectively. Organic matter-bound Cd increased 47%-62% (p < 0.05). Cadmium concentrations decreased in the roots, culms, leaves, and grains of rice grown in the Cd-contaminated soils by 37%-81%, 18%-73%, 29%-64% and 27%-63%, respectively, (p < 0.05). Catalase and urease activities increased 2.5%-63% and 3.9%-36%, (p < 0.05), respectively. It is critical to dispose and reuse metal-contaminated biomass. In this study, pyrolysis technology was used for processing metal contaminated biomass from Arundo donax and Broussonetia papyrifera impregnated with cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu) and lead (Pb). The results showed that metal-impregnated biomass can be pyrolyzed completely, as confirmed by a thermal gravimetric analyzer analysis. From the start to 200 °C, a dehydration reaction occurred. The decomposition of biomass reacted extensively from 200 to 450 °C, and more than 60% of the mass was lost. The mass of solid residue of the biomass loaded with Cd, Cu and Pb was 4.7% (A. donax) and 7.5% (B. papyrifera) respectively lower than that of the unloaded biomass, which could have contributed to the lowering of the activation energy of the pyrolyzed biomass. The activation energy of A. donax pyrolyzed was reduced by approximately 1.85-3.84 kJ/mol, while that of B. papyrifera was 0.93-13.28 kJ/mol. More than 67.76% of the heavy metals in the biomass were retained in the solid phase, and uniformly distributed in the pore structure. However, the cellulose crystallinity of the biochar was decreased, therefore causing the disordering of the amorphous carbon phase of the carbon structure. The results suggested that heavy metals in biomass can lower the difficulty of the reaction, and most of the heavy metals remained in the solid phase, indicating that pyrolysis is an interesting technology to process metal-contaminated biomass. A total of 219 agricultural soil and 48 vegetable samples were collected from the midstream and downstream of the Xiangjiang River (the Hengyang-Changsha section) in Hunan Province. The accumulation characteristics, spatial distribution and potential risk of heavy metals in the agricultural soils and vegetables were depicted. There are higher accumulations of heavy metals such as As, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in agricultural soils, and the contents of Cd (2.44 mg kg−1), Pb (65.00 mg kg−1) and Zn (144.13 mg kg−1) are 7.97, 3.69 and 1.63 times the corresponding background contents in soils of Hunan Province, respectively. 13.2% of As, 68.5% of Cd, 2.7% of Cu, 2.7% of Ni, 8.7% of Pb and 15.1% of Zn in soil samples from the investigated sites exceeded the maximum allowable heavy metal contents in the China Environmental Quality Standard for Soils (GB15618-1995, Grade II). The pollution characteristics of multi-metals in soils are mainly due to Cd. The contents of As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in vegetable soils are significantly higher than the contents in paddy soils. 95.8%, 68.8%, 10.4% and 95.8% of vegetable samples exceeded the Maximum Levels of Contaminants in Foods (GB2762-2005) for As, Cd, Ni and Pb concentrations, respectively. There are significantly positive correlations between the concentrations of Cd, Pb and Zn in vegetables and the concentrations in the corresponding vegetable soils ( p<0.01). Leaching experiments of rebuilt soil columns with two simulated acid rain solutions (pH 4.6–3.8) were conducted for two natural soils and two artificial contaminated soils from Hunan, south-central China, to study effects of acid rain on competitive releases of soil Cd, Cu, and Zn. Distilled water was used in comparison. The results showed that the total releases were Zn>Cu>Cd for the natural soils and Cd>Zn≫Cu for the contaminated soils, which reflected sensitivity of these metals to acid rain. Leached with different acid rain, about 26–76% of external Cd and 11–68% external Zn were released, but more than 99% of external Cu was adsorbed by the soils, and therefore Cu had a different sorption and desorption pattern from Cd and Zn. Metal releases were obviously correlated with releases of TOC in the leachates, which could be described as an exponential equation. Compared with the natural soils, acid rain not only led to changes in total metal contents, but also in metal fraction distributions in the contaminated soils. More acidified soils had a lower sorption capacity to metals, mostly related to soil properties such as pH, organic matter, soil particles, adsorbed SO4 2−, exchangeable Al3+ and H+, and contents of Fe2O3 and Al2O3. To analyze the intestinal microbiota diversity of several important economic fishes in the Loudi area and its correlation with the microbiota of water environment, the high-throughput sequencing based on the bacteria 16S rRNA was used to analyze the intestinal microbiota diversity in fish intestines and water. The results revealed that half of the OTUs in the water sample could be detected in the fish intestine, the proportion of shared OTUs in the intestines of Hypophthalmichthys molitrix and water samples was only 22%, and the unique OTU in the LC group was relatively the highest in the fish intestinal group. It can be seen from the analysis in NMDS analysis, the distance between Hypophthalmichthys molitrix group and water group is relatively farthest. Ctenopharyngodon idellus has the highest microbiota richness and diversity (P < 0.05), while the water samples have the lowest microbiota richness (P < 0.05). Firmicutes, Methylocaldum and Bacillus are the prevalent taxonomic unit in the Aristichthys nobilis and Carassius auratus groups, Anaerospora is the prevalent genera in the Hypophthalmichthys molitrix group, Proteobacteria and Cyanobacteria have a high relative abundance ratio in the Ctenopharyngodon idellus group, and the prevalent taxonomic unit in the water sample group are Phenylobacterium, Bacteroidetes and Actinobacteria. In conclusion, fish species have different prevalent microbiota. There are a strong correlation between fish intestinal microbiota and the water environment, and the fish with a weak correlation is Hypophthalmichthys molitrix. The metal(loid) contamination in river sediments due to the legacy of abandoned mines has attracted wide attention. A total of 168 samples of water and overbank sediments from Xinqiang River near abandoned Taolin Pb/Zn mine were collected to reveal the migration and ecological risk of metal(loid)s in the river. The results showed that the overbank sediments were polluted by As, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn, which were 1.9-16.7 times higher than the background values due to historical mining and processing activities, while Ni and Cr mainly came from earth’s crust. The distribution of metal(loid) pollution in the sediment profiles mainly covered in the mining district and the adjacent rural district. Resuspension of sediment particles is more likely to occur at the confluence of the rivers, and the secondary transportation of metal(loid)s was frequently found in the downstream of the confluence. The metals in sediments had different mobility with the water flow from the abandoned Pb/Zn mine to the downstream, following the migration order of Zn > Pb > Cd. Moreover, the potential ecological risk of Cd in the overbank sediments arrived to 503.2, a very high risk level; thus, the Cd contamination in the historical Pb/Zn mining area should be controlled with priority.
