This study examines the hypotheses that the traits of higher IQ, longer education and taller height are associated with lower risk of death as compared to traits of low IQ, short education, and short height in men with schizophrenia compared to men without schizophrenia. In total, 937,919 men born 1939-59 and 1983–1997 with information from conscription were followed for incident schizophrenia in Danish registries. Higher levels of cognitive ability, longer education, and taller height were associated with fewer cases of schizophrenia. In a sub-sample of 652,368 men with information on body mass index, underweight was associated with more and overweight and obesity were associated with fewer cases of schizophrenia compared with normal weight. Higher cognitive ability, longer education, and taller height were associated with fewer deaths from both natural and unnatural causes in both men with and without schizophrenia. Underweight was associated with more deaths from natural and unnatural causes, whereas overweight and obesity were associated with more deaths from natural causes and fewer deaths from unnatural causes in both groups of men. Due to interaction, tall height and long educational duration were associated with fewer deaths from natural causes, and obesity was associated with fewer deaths from unnatural causes among men with schizophrenia compared to men without. In conclusion, traits in young adulthood are associated with higher mortality in men with and without schizophrenia, but traits of long educational duration and obesity seem to be especially important for lower mortality in men with schizophrenia. Accurate determination of coronary reference size is essential for optimal stent selection and evaluation of stent expansion during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Several approaches for reference size estimation have been published with no universal agreement. The aim of this study was to investigate if potential differences in coronary reference size estimation lead to differences in stent and balloon selection and in detection of stent under expansion. Definitions for coronary reference size estimation, stent size selection, and stent expansion were identified in 17 randomized controlled trials. The identified methods were applied in a population of 32 clinical cases. Reference size estimates ranged up to 1.35mm, and indicated nominal stent size ranged up to 1.0 mm in the same case depending on method. Mean relative stent expansion ranged from 54±12% to mean 100±29% depending on the applied reference method. Choice of method for reference size estimation using intravascular imaging may influence stent selection and greatly affects evaluation of post-PCI stent expansion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nutrient acquisition through heterotrophy is critical for the health of reef-building corals. The optimization of exogenous nutrition protocols to support a diversity of aquaculture corals requires improved techniques to assess feeding rates. Here, we compared the feeding rates of three coral species (Acropora millepora, Pocillopora acuta and Galaxea fascicularis) fed Artemia salina through capture rate (indirect) and dissection (direct) approaches, with direct detection and enumeration within dissected polyps facilitated by fluorescent microbeads ingested by the Artemia. When A. millepora was provided Artemia at 3 individuals ml−1 for one hour, the calculated capture rates (0.7 ind. polyp−1 h−1) overestimated prey ingested compared to prey detected directly within polyps (0.2 ind. polyp−1 h−1), and ingestion varied significantly between genotypes. In contrast, for P. acuta, capture rate calculations (1 ind. polyp−1 h−1) underestimated prey detected within polyps (3.5 ind. polyp−1 h−1) and ingestion did not vary between genotypes. For G. fascicularis, the feeding rates were similar as calculated by both capture rates (59 ind. polyp−1 h−1) and by polyp dissections (75 ind. polyp−1 h−1). Results from this study provide valuable insights into coral feeding rates of different coral species that can improve prey enrichment and feeding strategies for nutritional supplementation of corals in captivity. The impact of left ventricle (LV) hypertrophy (LVH) regression on contractility-associated measures, the extent of residual cardiac dysfunction and prognostic implications after the initial remodeling process after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has not been investigated. We aimed to assess whether greater LV mass regression from pre-TAVR to 12-months after TAVR was associated with increased systolic function; and assess the prognostic value of residual LVH, systolic function and contractility-associated measures 12-months after TAVR. A total of 439 symptomatic patients were included and examined by echocardiography. LVH regression was assessed as percentage change in LV mass index (LVMi) from baseline to 12-months after TAVR. Midwall fractional shortening (mFS) and stress-corrected (SC-mFS) were used as contractility-associated measures. Primary outcome was all-cause mortality. SC-mFS increased from 0.94 (0.7) at baseline (BS) to 1.22 (0.7) (p < 0.05) 12-months after TAVR for patients with the most LVH regression, compared to patients with no LV regression (BS 1.06 (0.7) to 1.04 (0.5), NS). At 12-months after TAVR, multivariate analysis showed independent prognostic value of LVEF < 50% or GLS < 15% (HR 1.59, p = 0.049) and mFS < 14% (HR 1.99, p = 0.002) for future all cause death. LVH regression in AS after TAVR is associated with significant improvements of LV systolic function in contrast to patients without LV regression. Residual LVH and subsequent LV systolic dysfunction is substantial 12 months after TAVR and are associated with reduced survival. The coupling between coronary artery disease and the development of ischemic heart failure is well-established. For these patients, assessment of potentially viable but dysfunctional myocardial tissue (hibernation) is considered critical to guide optimal surgical treatment. Assessment with positron emission tomography (PET) theoretically provides measurements of hibernating tissue and maximal myocardial glucose uptake (MGU) in all cardiac territories. However, the clinical benefits of these measures are not thoroughly studied. We therefore aimed to investigate whether cardiac viability testing with combined Rubidium-82 (82Rb) and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) predicts post-intervention improvement in left ventricle ejection fraction (LVEF) and survival. This retrospective study consisted of 131 patients with ischemic heart failure referred for dynamic 82Rb/18F-FDG PET viability testing prior to revascularization. The FDG viability scan was done during a hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp and included PET measures static FDG hibernation and absolute MGU as well as myocardial blood flow and coronary flow reserve. In total, 44/131 patients undergoing viability testing were subsequently revascularized. Following revascularization, 26 patients had LVEF improvement of at least 5% while 18 patients had no improvement. A poor correlation between areas of intervention and areas of hibernation was observed. Receiver operating characteristics for all PET metrics did not predict improvement in LVEF. Furthermore, hibernation failed to predict survival regardless of whether patients underwent subsequent revascularization. Dynamic viability PET metrics (hibernation and MGU) do not predict post-intervention improvement in LVEF or overall survival in ischemic heart failure patients undergoing revascularization. The physiological mechanisms of quantitative flow ratio and fractional flow reserve disagreement are not fully understood. We aimed to characterize the coronary flow and resistance profile of intermediate stenosed epicardial coronary arteries with concordant and discordant FFR and QFR. Post-hoc analysis of the DEFINE-FLOW study. Anatomical and Doppler-derived physiological parameters were compared for lesions with FFR+QFR− (n = 18) vs. FFR+QFR+ (n = 43) and for FFR−QFR+ (n = 34) vs. FFR−QFR− (n = 139). The association of QFR results with the two-year rate of target vessel failure was assessed in the proportion of vessels (n = 195) that did not undergo revascularization. Coronary flow reserve was higher [2.3 (IQR: 2.1–2.7) vs. 1.9 (IQR: 1.5–2.4)], hyperemic microvascular resistance lower [1.72 (IQR: 1.48–2.31) vs. 2.26 (IQR: 1.79–2.87)] and anatomical lesion severity less severe [% diameter stenosis 45.5 (IQR: 41.5–52.5) vs. 58.5 (IQR: 53.1–64.0)] for FFR+QFR− lesions compared with FFR+QFR+ lesions. Purpose: Data regarding vessel healing by optical coherence tomography (OCT) after everolimus-eluting bioresorbable scaffolds (BRS) or everolimus-eluting metallic stent (EES) implantation in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients is scarce. We compared OCT findings after BRS or EES implantation in patients with AMI enrolled in a randomized trial. Methods: In ISAR-Absorb MI, AMI patients were randomized to BRS or EES implantation, with 6–8 month angiographic follow-up. This analysis includes patients who underwent OCT during surveillance angiography. Tissue characterization was done using grey-scale signal intensity analysis. The association between OCT findings and target lesion failure (TLF) at 2 years was investigated. Results: OCT was analyzed in 103 patients (2237 frames, 19,827 struts) at a median of 216 days post-implantation. Of these, 70 were treated with BRS versus 32 with EES. Pre-(92.8 vs. 68.7%, p = 0.002) and post-dilation (51.4 vs. 12.5%, p < 0.001) were more common in BRS as compared to EES. Strut coverage was higher in BRS vs. EES (97.5% vs. 90.9%, p < 0.001). Mean neointimal thickness was comparable in both groups [85.5 (61.9, 124.1) vs. 69.5 (32.7, 127.5) µm, respectively, p = 0.20]. Mature neointimal regions were numerically more common in BRS (43.0% vs. 24.6%; p = 0.35); this difference was statistically significant in ST-elevation myocardial infarction patients (40.9% vs. 21.1%, p = 0.03). At two-years, 8 (7.8%) patients experienced TLF. Mean neointimal area [0.61 (0.21, 1.33) vs. 0.41 (0.11, 0.75) mm2, p = 0.03] and mean neointimal coverage [106.1 (65.2, 214.8) vs. 80.5 (53.5, 122.1) µm, p < 0.01] were higher, with comparable tissue maturity, in lesions with versus without TLF. Conclusions: In selected patients who underwent OCT surveillance 6–8 months after coronary intervention for AMI with differing implantation characteristics depending on the device type used, vessel healing was more advanced in BRS compared with EES, particularly in the STEMI subgroup. Adolescence represents an important period in brain and mental development, which raises the question of whether measures of body size at entry into adult life influence the risk of developing mood disorders. We examined the association of BMI and height in a cohort of young men with risk of mood disorders throughout life. The study included 630,807 Danish men born 1939–1959 and 1983–1997 with measures of height and weight at conscription board examinations. Psychiatrist's diagnosis of mood disorders was obtained from national patient registries from 1969 to 2016. The associations of BMI and height with mood disorders were estimated by Cox proportional hazard regression analyses adjusting for education, cognitive ability, migration status drug and alcohol misuse. During a mean follow-up of 26.3 years, 2,608 (0.6%) and 19,690 (3.1%) men were diagnosed with bipolar disorder and depression, respectively. We found an inverse linear association of BMI with risk of bipolar disorder, whereas the association of BMI with depression was curve-linear with a decline in risk until BMI around 25 kg/m2, and an almost constant risk across the BMI range above 25 kg/m2. Height was not associated with bipolar disorder or depression. Comparison of brothers, assumed to share family factors of possible influence on the risk of mood disorders, showed similar results although with wider confidence intervals. Engineered micro- and nanomechanical resonators with ultra-low dissipation constitute a promising platform for various quantum technologies and foundational research. Traditionally, the improvement of the resonator's performance through nanomechanical structural engineering has been driven by human intuition and insight. Such an approach is inefficient and leaves aside a plethora of unexplored mechanical designs that potentially achieve better performance. Here, we use a computer-aided inverse design approach known as topology optimization to structurally design mechanical resonators with optimized performance of the fundamental mechanical mode. Using the outcomes of this approach, we fabricate and characterize ultra-coherent nanomechanical resonators with, to the best of our knowledge, record-high Q ⋅ f products for their fundamental mode (where Q is the quality factor and f is the frequency). The proposed approach - which can also be used to improve phononic crystals and coupled-mode resonators - opens up a new paradigm for designing ultra-coherent micro- and nanomechanical resonators, enabling e.g. novel experiments in fundamental physics and extreme sensing. Nanomechanical resonators can be improved through rational design. Using an inverse design approach the authors achieve ultra-coherent resonators and pave the way towards the engineering of high performance micro- and nanomechanical resonators. Risk stratification in patients with suspected coronary artery disease (CAD) is important. Recently, the minimal-risk-tool (MRT) was developed to identify individuals with low CAD risk despite symptoms in order to avoid unnecessary testing. We aimed to validate and update the MRT-model in a contemporary cohort. The Dan-NICAD trial cohort, consisting of 1675 consecutive patients referred for coronary computed tomography angiography (CTA), was used to calculate the MRT-score based on the published fitted variable coefficients from the PROMISE and SCOT-HEART trials. Minimal risk was defined as zero calcium score, no coronary atherosclerosis at coronary CTA, and no cardiovascular events in the follow-up period. We tested an updated MRT-model by pooling the fitted variable coefficients from all three trials. A total of 1544 patients fulfilling the inclusion criteria were followed for 3.1 [2.7–3.4] years. In 710 (46%) patients, the criteria for minimal risk were fulfilled. Despite substantial coefficient variation, the MRTs based on the PROMISE, the SCOT-HEART and the updated MRT variables showed similar moderate to high discriminative performance for minimal risk estimation. Although all three models tended to underestimate minimal risk, the updated MRT had the best performance. Using a 75% minimal risk cut-off, the updated MRT showed a sensitivity of 11.6% (95% CI 9.3–14.2%) and specificity of 99.3% (95% CI 98.6–99.8%). An updated MRT model based on three large studies increased calibration compared to the existing MRT models, whereas discrimination was similar despite substantial coefficient variation. The risk of dementia seems to be established already early in life, which leads to the question if overweight early in life is an important risk factor for dementia as it appears to be later in life. We examined the association between body mass index (BMI) at entry to adult life and subsequent risk of dementia in men and assessed whether the relationship differed by levels of intelligence and education. The study population consisted of 377,598 Danish men born 1939–1959 with measures of height, weight, intelligence test score (ITS), and educational level (EL) at conscript board examinations around the age of 19 years. Dementia outcomes were obtained from National Patient and Prescription Registries between 1969 and 2016. The association between BMI and dementia was analysed using Cox proportional hazard regression including interactions between BMI and ITS and EL, respectively. During the follow-up through age 77 years, 6144 (1.6%) developed dementia. The frequency was highest in men with lowest BMI, lowest ITS and lowest EL. Young adult BMI below the mean of 21.8 kg/m2 was inversely associated with subsequent dementia, whereas there was no association with higher levels of BMI. Adjustment for young adult ITS and EL attenuated the risk estimates slightly, and interaction analyses showed that the shape of the association between BMI and dementia was unaffected by the levels of ITS and EL. For migratory birds, sustainable harvest management based on quantitative modelling needs cross-border hunting bag statistics. At the European scale, proper modelling requires both reliable and mutually compatible hunting bag data between regions and countries. Owing to the absence of harmonisation among the different hunting bag collecting schemes in Europe and the lack of methodological metadata, adaptive management at the flyway scale is currently extremely challenging for a number of species. For improving the current state of affairs, we expose statistical concepts, terminology and issues inherent to hunting bag data collection schemes; identify the multiplicity of error sources for being able to judge the quality of hunting bag statistics; call for a harmonisation process; discuss the origin of the hurdles in the production of standardised hunting bag statistics at the European scale; and suggest some potential avenues for future actions for overcoming them. Recent studies have highlighted the efficacy of and willingness to use pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent HIV infection among people who inject drugs (PWID), however knowledge of real-world applicability is limited. We aimed to quantify the real-world eligibility for HIV-PrEP among HIV-negative PWID in Montreal, Canada (n = 718). Eligibility was calculated according to US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines and compared to risk of HIV acquisition according to the assessing the risk of contracting HIV (ARCH-IDU) risk screening tool. Over one-third of participants (37%) were eligible for HIV PrEP, with 1/3 of these eligible due to sexual risk alone. Half of participants were considered high risk of HIV acquisition according to ARCH-IDU, but there was poor agreement between the two measures. Although a large proportion of PWID were eligible for HIV-PrEP, better tools that are context- and location-informed are needed to identify PWID at higher risk of HIV acquisition. Thermal detectors are a cornerstone of infrared and terahertz technology due to their broad spectral range. These detectors call for efficient absorbers with a broad spectral response and minimal thermal mass. A common approach is based on impedance-matching the sheet resistance of a thin metallic film to half the free-space impedance. Thereby, one can achieve a wavelength-independent absorptivity of up to 50%. However, existing absorber films typically require a thickness of the order of tens of nanometers, which can significantly deteriorate the response of a thermal transducer. Here, we present the application of ultrathin gold (2 nm) on top of a surfactant layer of oxidized copper as an effective infrared absorber. An almost wavelength-independent and long-time stable absorptivity of 47(3)%, ranging from 2 μm to 20 μm, can be obtained. The presented absorber allows for a significant improvement of infrared/terahertz technologies in general and thermal detectors in particular. Long-term stability and broad spectral response are highly desired features of absorbers. Here, the authors report impedance matched absorbers based on 2 nm thick gold layer operating within the mid-infrared range from 2 to 20 μm, enabling stable long term absorptivity of 47(3) % which is mostly wavelength independent. Iron molybdate/molybdenum oxide catalysts with varying content of Mo (Mo/Fe = 1.6 and 2.0) were synthesized by a mild hydrothermal method and structurally characterized by XRD, XPS, Raman spectroscopy, SEM–EDX, BET and ICP-OES. The stability of the prepared catalysts in selective oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde was investigated by catalytic activity measurements for up to 100 h on stream in a laboratory fixed-bed reactor (5% MeOH, 10% O2 in N2, temp. = 380–407 °C). Excess MoO3 present in the catalyst volatilized under reaction conditions, which lead to an initial loss of activity. Interestingly, the structure of the excess MoO3 significantly affected the stability of the catalyst. By using low temperature hydrothermal synthesis, catalysts with the thermodynamically metastable hexagonal h-MoO3 phase was synthesized, which yielded relatively large crystals (2–10 µm), with correspondingly low surface area to volume ratio. The rate of volatilization of MoO3 from these crystals was comparatively low, which stabilized the catalysts. It was furthermore shown that heat-treatment of a spent catalyst, subject to significant depletion of MoO3, reactivated the catalyst, likely due to migration of Mo from the bulk of the iron molybdate crystals to the surface region. Fe2(MoO4)3/MoO3 catalysts for selective oxidation of methanol were synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis forming large hexagonal-MoO3 crystals. Significantly lower rate of catalyst deactivation due to volatilization of MoO3 under reaction conditions was observed for the large h-MoO3 compared to smaller crystals of thermodynamically stable α-MoO3. Purpose: To determine the prospective relation between workplace violence and the risk of long-term sickness absence (LTSA), and study if work-unit social capital could buffer this effect. As an explorative analysis, the association between work-unit social capital and workplace violence is also tested. Methods: The study is based on the Well-being in HospitAL Employees (WHALE) cohort, including healthcare employees in Denmark. The study sample consisted of 30,044 employees nested within 2304 work-units. Exposure to workplace violence and threats of violence during the past 12 months was measured by self-report. Work-unit social capital was computed by aggregating the mean individual responses within work-units. LTSA was defined as one or more episodes of ≥ 29 consecutive sickness absence days initiated within 2 years following baseline. Results: Employees experiencing workplace violence had a higher risk of LTSA (OR = 1.55; 95% CI 1.39–1.72), but there was no evidence in support of work-unit social capital buffering the effect of workplace violence on LTSA (RERI = 0.24; 95%CI: − 0.36 to 0.84; p = 0.12 for multiplicative interaction). High compared to low work-unit social capital was associated with a lower prevalence of workplace violence (OR = 0.47; 95% CI 0.36–0.61). Conclusion: There was a prospective association between workplace violence and LTSA, but work-unit social capital did not buffer this effect. Furthermore, the results revealed an inverse association between work-unit social capital and workplace violence. Highly nutritional microalgal species are extensively used in aquaculture as live feedstock. Due to difficulties in maintaining microalgae in axenic conditions, they represent a potential pathogen carrier and disease vector in aquaculture ponds. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) via singlet oxygen (1O2) production is a promising sterilization technique in aquaculture. Here, we report on the sensitivity of aquaculture-relevant microalgae towards 1O2 generated by the cationic photosensitizer TMPyP. Possible PDT sterilization protocols of contaminated microalgae cultures were evaluated using the luminescent bacterium Vibrio campbellii ISO7 as a model aquaculture pathogen. Species-specific sensitivity of microalgae to TMPyP-mediated PDT was demonstrated and found to be strongly influenced by the nature and architecture of their respective cell wall. While cytotoxicity was not evident against Nannochloropsis oculata, toxicity of 1O2 was dose-, time- and light activation-dependent against Tisochrysis lutea, Tetraselmis chui, Chaetoceros muelleri and Picochlorum atomus. The 1O2-resilient N. oculata was sterilized when incubated under light in the presence of V. campbellii ISO7 (up to 107 CFU mL−1) and 20 μM TMPyP; hence, TMPyP-based PDT sterilization of N. oculata could be suitable for aquaculture hatcheries. This study also suggests that PDT using cationic porphyrins such as TMPyP holds potential as an algicidal treatment in aquaria and aquaculture systems (but more research using opportunistic and toxic species is needed for confirmation). The hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of ethylene glycol over MgAl2O4 supported NiMo and CoMo catalysts with around 0.8 and 3 wt% Mo loading was studied in a continuous flow reactor setup operated at 27 bar H2 and 400 °C. A co-feed of H2S of typically 550 ppm was beneficial for both deoxygenation and hydrogenation and for enhancing catalyst stability. With 2.8–3.3 wt% Mo, a total carbon based gas yield of 80–100% was obtained with an ethane yield of 36–50% at up to 118 h on stream. No ethylene was detected. A moderate selectivity towards HDO was obtained, but cracking and HDO were generally catalyzed to the same extent by the active phase. Thus, the C2/C1 ratio of gaseous products was 1.1–1.5 for all prepared catalysts independent on Mo loading (0.8–3.3 wt%), but higher yields of C1–C3 gas products were obtained with higher loading catalysts. Similar activities were obtained from Ni and Co promoted catalysts. For the low loading catalysts (0.83–0.88 wt% Mo), a slightly higher hydrogenation activity was observed over NiMo compared to CoMo, giving a relatively higher yield of ethane compared to ethylene. Addition of 30 wt% water to the ethylene glycol feed did not result in significant deactivation. Instead, the main source of deactivation was carbon deposition, which was favored at limited hydrogenation activity and thus, was more severe for the low loading catalysts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We aimed to evaluate feasibility, early healing and self-correcting properties of the Desolve 150 bioresorbable scaffold (BRS) implanted in bifurcation lesions, using the simple, provisional side branch (SB) stenting technique. BIFSORB pilot was a proof-of-concept study enrolling 10 patients with stable angina pectoris and a bifurcation lesion with SB ≥ 2.5 mm and less than 50% diameter stenosis. Procedure and 1-month outcome was evaluated by optical coherence tomography (OCT) to assess scaffold performance and healing patterns. Nine patients were treated with Desolve 150 BRS and one delivery to the target bifurcation failed. Thrombus formation in the jailed SB ostium was seen in three cases, but was completely resolved at 1-month. OCT confirmed acute self-correcting properties. No clinical events were reported after six months. Scaffold diameter by OCT increased in the proximal main vessel from 3.09 ± 0.16 mm to 3.34 ± 0.18 mm (p = 0.01) and in distal main vessel from 2.82 ± 0.26 mm to 3.02 ± 0.29 mm (p < 0.01) at one-month follow-up. SB ostial diameter stenosis improved from 42 ± 15% to 34 ± 12% (p = 0.01). Malapposition was effectively reduced after 1 month from 4.1 (1.4; 6.1)% to 0.1 (0; 0.6)% (p = 0.002). Treatment of bifurcation lesions using Desolve 150 BRS was feasible except for a delivery failure and unsettling thrombus formation behind jailing SB struts, which was completely resolved at 1-month. Purpose: First, to investigate associations between mobility limitations and use of general practitioners and hospitalizations of acute care sensitive conditions, respectively. Second, to investigate whether these associations vary by socio-demographic factors.Methods: The study included 3574 females and males aged 75 or 80 years from the Danish Intervention Study on Preventive Home Visits. Fixed-effects logistic and poisson regression models were applied to study the relationship between mobility limitations (measured two-four times) and general practitioner consultations and hospitalizations with acute care sensitive conditions each subsequent year, respectively.Results: Each additional mobility limitation was associated with 15% higher odds of general practitioner home consultation (Odds ratio 1.15, 95% CI 1.07;1.23) and 4% increased incidence rate of general practitioner consultations among those with ≥ 1 consultation (Incidence rate ratio 1.04, 95% CI 1.03;1.04). There were no associations between mobility limitations and whether older adults had at least one general practitioner consultation nor acute care sensitive condition hospitalization. Test of interactions (p < 0.03) showed that more mobility limitations were associated with greater incidence rate of general practitioner consultations among males compared to females, married compared to unmarried, and older adults with high compared to low financial assets.Conclusions: Older adults with more mobility limitations had more often a general practitioner home consultation. Mobility limitations were not associated with whether older adults had at least one general practitioner consultation, but increased mobility limitations were associated with higher contact rate among those who had ≥ 1 consultation, especially among males and older adults who were married or had high financial assets. We describe binge drug injection in a longitudinal cohort study of people who inject drugs (PWID) in Montreal, Canada (eligibility: age ≥ 18, past-6-month injection drug use; follow-up: 3-monthly interviews). Bingeing was defined as injecting large quantities of drugs over a limited period, until participants ran out or were unable to continue, in the past 3 months. We recorded substances and circumstances typically involved in binge episodes. Eight hundred five participants (82% male, median age 41) provided 8158 observations (2011–2020). Thirty-six per cent reported bingeing throughout follow-up. Binges involved a diverse range of substances and social contexts. Cocaine was involved in a majority of recent binges (73% of visits). Injection of multiple drug classes (24% of visits) and use of non-injection drugs (63% of visits) were common, as were opioid injection (42%) and injecting alone (41%). Binge drug use may thus be an important yet overlooked trigger of overdose and other harms among PWID. This understudied high-risk behavior warrants further research and public health attention. It is well established that socioeconomic position (SEP) and social relations impact physical function and mortality in old age. Due to differential vulnerability, few social relations may lead to greater decline in physical function and mortality among older people with low compared to high SEP. The aim was to investigate whether older people with few social relations experience greater decline in physical function and mortality when also subject to low financial assets? The study population included 4060 older people aged 75 or 80 years at baseline in 1998-1999. Social relations at baseline and physical function at baseline and after 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5 years were obtained from questionnaires. Financial assets at baseline and mortality during 10 years of follow-up were obtained from registers. Analyses of the associations between financial assets combined with social relations and decline in physical function and mortality, respectively, were conducted. Among males, but not females, low financial assets and few social relations were associated with the greatest decline in physical function. Yet, interaction only reached significance between financial assets and visits. Among males and females, low financial assets and few social relations were associated with the highest mortality. Interactions only reached significance between financial assets and visits for females and social activity for males. In conclusion, few social relations implied greater decline in physical function among older males and higher mortality among older males and females with low financial assets; however, the study only supports the presence of differential vulnerability for visits and social activity. Platinum-based oxidation catalysts applied for diesel exhaust aftertreatment constitute a significant part of system costs. Effective utilization of platinum is therefore relevant to reduce costs while retaining performance. To this end, the influence of Pt particle size on catalytic activity for CO, hydrocarbon, and NO oxidation was studied. 1 wt% Pt/AlO catalysts were prepared by wet impregnation, drying, and different calcination and thermal treatments, yielding Pt particles with diameters between 1.3 and 18.7 nm, as determined by CO pulse titration and transmission electron microscopy. Activity measurements for CO, CH, and NO oxidation showed an optimal Pt particle size with respect to the mass based activity between 2 and 4 nm for all three reactions. From measured turnover frequencies and site statistics of Pt particles, the reactions appear to be mainly catalyzed by terrace atoms, which are most abundant between 2 and 4 nm. The decrease in catalytic activity for large Pt particles is therefore due to the diminishing Pt surface area, while the decrease in activity for small particles is due to the lack of terrace atoms required for CO, HC, and NO oxidation. Two-nozzle frame spray analysis (FSP) synthesis of CoMo/AlO where Co and Al are sprayed in separate flames was applied to minimize the formation of CoAlO observed in one-nozzle flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) synthesis and the materials were characterized by N-adsorption (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and catalytic performances in hydrotreating. By varying the flame mixing distances (81-175 mm) the amount of CoAlO could be minimized. As evidenced by UV-vis spectroscopy, CoAlO was detected only at short flame mixing distances, where the flame conditions resemble one-nozzle FSP. Raman spectroscopy revealed that β-CoMoO was a component of all the catalysts (in the as-prepared oxidic form) together with alumina supported MoO surface species. The only phase detected with XRD was γ-AlO. The FSP synthesized oxidic catalysts were activated by sulfidation without further heat treatments. The hydrodesulfurization activity of the best two-nozzle FSP catalysts, compared to the one-nozzle FSP catalysts, improved from 75 to 91 % activity relative to a commercial reference catalyst and the hydrodenitrogenation activity improved from 70 to 90 % relative activity. This suggests that better promotion of the active molybdenum sulfide phase was achieved when using two-nozzle FSP synthesis, probably due to less formation of the undesired phase CoAlO, which makes Co unavailable for promotion. Low-temperature active Ag/AlO and high-temperature active Fe-BEA zeolite were combined and tested for H-assisted NH-selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO. The catalysts were either washcoated onto separate monoliths that were placed up- or downstream of each other (dual-brick layout) or washcoated on top of each other in a sandwiched layout (dual-layer). Our results showed that it is highly preferred to have Ag/AlO as the upstream or outer layer catalyst. Fe-BEA showed a high NH oxidation giving an NH deficit over the Ag/AlO. Ag/AlO formed NO which enhanced the activity over Fe-BEA through the 'fast'-SCR reaction when Fe-BEA was placed downstream or as inner layer. When no H, which is needed for the SCR reaction over Ag/AlO, was added, the dual-layer layout was preferred. The shorter diffusion distance between the layers is a probable explanation. In this paper, I examine an account of instrumental reasoning recently put forth by John Broome. His key suggestion is that anyone who engages in reasoning about his intentions also believes that he will do what he intends to do and that combined with a belief about necessary means this creates rational pressure towards believing that one will take the necessary means. I argue that Broome’s model has three significant problems; his key premise is false—the sincere expression of an intention does not entail the belief that one will successfully execute that intention; his account yields a model of instrumental reasoning that is uncomfortably reflective; he seems unable to explain the rational pressure towards taking necessary means that arises directly from having an end and an instrumental belief. A correlation of the reaction rate over Fe-Beta catalysts with a concentration of specific isolated Fe3+ sites represented by an ESR signal at g ≈ 4.3 and by UV adsorption bands with λmax < 300 nm was observed. Blocking zeolite cationic positions with Ca2+ and investigation of “Fe-free” Beta-zeolites confirmed the idea of isolated Fe complexes in cationic positions being active sites for NH3-deNOx. Archaeal populations are abundant in cold and temperate environments, but little is known about their potential response to climate change-induced temperature changes. The effects of temperature on archaeal communities in unamended slurries of weakly acidic peat from Spitsbergen were studied using a combination of fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH), 16S rRNA gene clone libraries and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). A high relative abundance of active archaeal cells (11–12% of total count) was seen at low temperatures (1 and 5 °C), and this community was dominated by Group 1.3b Crenarchaeota and the euryarchaeal clusters rice cluster V (RC-V), and Lake Dagow sediment (LDS). Increasing temperature reduced the diversity and relative abundance of these clusters. The methanogenic community in the slurries was diverse and included representatives of Methanomicrobiales, Methanobacterium, Methanosarcina and Methanosaeta. The overall relative abundance and diversity of the methanogenic archaea increased with increasing temperature, in accordance with a strong stimulation of methane production rates. However, DGGE profiling showed that the structure of this community changed with temperature and time. Grape proteins aggregate in white wine to form haze. A novel method to prevent haze in wine is the use of haze protective factors (Hpfs), specific mannoproteins from Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which reduce the particle size of the aggregated proteins. Hpf1p was isolated from white wine and Hpf2p from a synthetic grape juice fermentation. Putative structural genes, YOL155c and YDR055w, for these proteins were identified from partial amino acid sequences of Hpf1p and Hpf2p, respectively. YOL155c also has a homologue, YIL169c, in S. cerevisiae. Comparison of the partial amino acid sequence of deglycosylated-Hpf2p with the deduced protein sequence of YDR055w, confirmed five of the 15 potential N -linked glycosylation sites in this sequence were occupied. Methylation analysis of the carbohydrate moieties of Hpf2p indicated that this protein contained both N- and O-linked mannose chains. Material from fermentation supernatant of deletion strains had significantly less activity than the wild type. Moreover, YOL155c and YIL169c overexpressing strains and a strain overexpressing 6xHis-tagged Hpf2p produced greater haze protective activity than the wild type strains. A (1→3, 1→4)-β-glucan 4-glucanohydrolase [(1→3, 1→4)-β-glucanase, EC 3.2.1.73] was purified to homogeneity from extracts of germinated wheat grain. The enzyme, which was identified as an endohydrolase on the basis of oligosaccharide products released from a (1→3, 1→4)-β-glucan substrate, has an apparent pI of 8.2 and an apparent molecular mass of 30 kDa. Western blot analyses with specific monoclonal antibodies indicated that the enzyme is related to (1→3, 1→4)-β-glucanase isoenzyme EI from barley. The complete primary structure of the wheat (1→3, 1→4)-β-glucanase has been deduced from nucleotide sequence analysis of cDNAs isolated from a library prepared using poly(A) RNA from gibberellic acid-treated wheat aleurone layers. One cDNA, designated λLW2, is 1426 nucleotide pairs in length and encodes a 306 amino acid enzyme, together with a NH-terminal signal peptide of 28 amino acid residues. The mature polypeptide encoded by this cDNA has a molecular mass of 32085 and a predicted pI of 8.1. The other cDNA, designated λLW1, carries a 109 nucleotide pair sequence at its 5′ end that is characteristic of plant introns and therefore appears to have been synthesized from an incompletely processed mRNA. Comparison of the coding and 3′-untranslated regions of the two cDNAs reveals 31 nucleotide substitutions, but none of these result in amino acid substitutions. Thus, the cDNAs encode enzymes with identical primary structures, but their corresponding mRNAs may have originated from homeologous chromosomes in the hexaploid wheat genome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A (1→3)-β-D-glucan 3-glucanonydrolase (EC 3.2.1.39) of apparent M 32 000, designated GII, has been purified from germinated barley grain and characterized. The isoenzyme is resolved from a previously purified isoenzyme (GI) on the basis of differences in their isoelectric points; (1→3)-β-glucanases GI and GII have pI values of 8.6 and ≥ 10.0, respectively. Comparison of the sequences of their 40 NH-terminal amino acids reveals 68% positional identity. A 1265 nucleotide pair cDNA encoding (1→3)-β-glucanase isoenzyme GII has been isolated from a library prepared with mRNA of 2-day germinated barley scutella. Nucleotide sequence analysis of the cDNA has enabled the complete primary structure of the 306 amino acid (1→3)-β-glucanase to be deduced, together with that of a putative NH-terminal signal peptide of 28 amino acid residues. The (1→3)-β-glucanase cDNA is characterized by a high (G+C) content, which reflects a strong bias for the use of G or C in the wobble base position of codons. The amino acid sequence of the (1→3)-β-glucanase shows highly conserved internal domains and 52% overall positional identity with barley (1→3, 1→4)-β-glucanase isoenzyme EII, an enzyme of related but quite distinct substrate specificity. Thus, the (1→3)-β-glucanases, which may provide a degree of protection against microbial invasion of germinated barley grain through their ability to degrade fungal cell wall polysaccharides, appear to share a common evolutionary origin with the (1→3, 1→4)-β-glucanases, which function to depolymerize endosperm cell walls in the germinated grain. Three monoclonal antibodies to the 15.2 kD polypeptide subunit of a barley photosystem I(PSI) particle have been characterized. Immune-blot assays showed that there are at least two different antigenic sites on the polypeptide. The antibodies were employed for immunological identification of polypeptides translated in vitro in an mRNA-dependent cell-free rabbit reticulocyte lysate. The IgG's, CMp15.2:1 and CMp15.2:2, precipitated a polypeptide of molecular weight 23kD from in vitro translates primed with poly ARNA but not when chloroplast RNA from greening barley was used. No 23 kD precipitation band was found, if these antibodies were mixed with a PSI particle preparation before they were added to the translate. We conclude that the putative iron-sulphur centre binding 15.2 kD PSI subunit is synthesized on cytoplasmic ribosomes as a 23kD precursor, and is coded by nuclear DNA. A second chloroplast acyl carrier protein (denoted ACPII) has been purified to homogeneity from greening barley seedlings. Both the previously characterized ACP I and ACP II are active in fatty acid synthesis but differ significantly in their amino acid composition. Comparison of the amino-terminal sequences of the two proteins reveals striking differences as indicated by the underlines. ACP II: NH-AKKETV EKV? DIVK SQLA LSD DDE-, ACP I: NH- AAMGEAOAKKETV DKV(C?) MIVK KQLA VPD GTP-. We thus deduce that the two ACPs are coded for by different genes. Both ACPs are present in dark and light grown seedlings although in sligthly different proportions. Malonyl-CoA:ACP transacylase from barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) has been purified to homogeneity and used in an assay for acyl carrier protein (ACP). The transacylase is an acidic, monomeric protein with a molecular weight of 34,500 very similar to the analogous E. coli enzyme. A heat and acid stable acyl carrier protein from barley has been purified to homogeneity and its chemical composition determined. A comparison of the primary structure of this plant ACP and bacterial ACP reveals two identical sequences (underlined) in the midregion of the molecule containing the 4′-phosphopantetheine attachment site, while differences occur outside this region. Nine extra residues (italicized) are present at the N-terminal end of the barley protein thereby accounting for its larger size. Identical products are obtained when barley chloroplast fatty acid synthetase is incubated with either barley or E. coli ACP, but the latter is twice as active as the former in fatty acid synthesis. Sonication of barley thylakoids in a high salt buffer released three polypeptides of M 32,000, 23,000, and 13,500 which were purified to homogeneity by chromatofocusing. Highly purified inside-out photosystem II preparations were obtained by French Press treatment or by Triton X-100 fractionation of stacked lamellar systems. Both preparations are composed of pairs of appressed membrane sheets. In the French Press preparation, the majority of these membrane pairs are sealed whereas they are predominantly unsealed in the Triton X-100 preparation. Both preparations are able to evolve oxygen and show reversed proton pumping. The oxygen evolving capacity and variable fluorescence of both preparations were lost upon washing with high salt buffer. This treatment also removed three polypeptides at M 32,000, 23,000, and 13,500. The inactivated preparations were reconstituted with respect to oxygen evolution and variable fluorescence by rebinding of the isolated M 23,000 polypeptide. An acyl carrier protein (ACP) dependent fatty acid synthetase (fas) from barley chloroplast stroma was purified five-fold by ammonium sulphate precipitation and gel filtration on Sephacryl S-300. The β-ketoacyl-ACP reductase, β-ketoacyl-ACP synthetase, acetyl-CoA:ACP transacylase and malonyl-CoA:ACP transacylase activities were resolved on the Sephacryl S-300 column with apparent molecular weights of respectively 125, 92, 82 and 41 kilodalton. The fas activity exhibited an apparent molecular weight of 87 kilodalton resulting from the overlapping portions of the component activities. A fifth component of the active fas, ACP, was separated completely from the other four individual enzyme activities by the ammonium sulphate precipitation. When the fas purified by gel filtration was applied to a Mātrex Gel Blue B column, the component activities were separated into two groups. A bound fraction contained all the malonyl-CoA:ACP transacylase whereas the β-ketoacyl synthetase activity was exclusively present in the non-bound fraction. Neither the bound nor the non-bound fraction showed any fas activity alone, but complete reconstitution of fas activity was obtained when both protein fractions were combined. The barley chloroplast fas is therefore not a multifunctional protein but consists of at least five separable components. Characterization with respect to cofactor requirements was also performed. In this paper, we analyse the intersections between care and place in mundane spaces not explicitly designed for the provision of care, and where digital technologies are used to mediate ecologies of distress in the city. We locate our analysis alongside studies of how digital technologies impact the experience of care within non-clinical spaces, whilst noting that much research on the use of technologies for care remains haunted by clinical imaginaries. Bringing together ideas of multi-sited therapeutic assemblages, technogeographies of care, and how places-by-proxy can act as conduits for care, we explore an example of an online app being used in public space to manage experiences of anxiety in an everyday urban environment. We reflect on this illustrative example to trace the movement of care as it is mediated through digital technologies—out of the clinic, beyond the home, and into the ordinary spaces of the city.
