Fifteen airborne particulate matter-bound metals were analyzed at 14 sites in four large cities (Seoul, Incheon, Busan, Daegu) in South Korea, between August 2013 and June 2017. Among the seven sources resolved by positive matrix factorization, soil dust and marine aerosol accounted for the largest and second largest portions in the three cities; however, in Seoul, soil dust and traffic occupied the largest and the second largest, respectively. Non-carcinogenic risk assessed by inhalation of eight metals (Cd, Co, Ni, Pb, As, Al, Mn, and V) was greater than the hazard index (HI) of 1 at four sites located at or near the industrial complexes. Cumulative incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) due to exposure to five metals (Cd, Co, Ni, Pb, and As) exceeded the 10−6 cancer benchmark at 14 sites and 10−5 at six sites, which includes four sites with HI greater than 1. The largest contributor to ILCR was coal combustion in Seoul, Incheon, and Daegu, and industry sources in Busan. Moreover, industry sources were the largest contributors to non-carcinogenic risk in Seoul, Busan, and Daegu, and soil dust was in Incheon. Incheon had the highest HI in spring because of the higher contribution of soil dust sources than in other seasons. The higher ILCR in Incheon in spring and winter and higher ILCR and HI in Daegu in autumn were mainly due to the influence of industry or coal combustion sources. Statistically significant differences in the ILCR and HI values among the sampling sites in Busan and Daegu resulted from the higher contribution of industry sources at a certain site in the respective city. We conducted ambient monitoring of various hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) for 2 years (2013-2015) in two adjacent Korean cities in a megacity area: Seoul and Incheon. Measured HAPs included volatile organic compounds (VOCs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and heavy metals (HMs). The objectives of this study were to evaluate the spatiotemporal variations of HAPs, to prioritize HAPs based on health risks, to identify sources using a receptor-based model, and to estimate source-specific risks. Overall, the HAP levels in Incheon were higher than those in Seoul. The concentrations of combustion-origin HAPs, such as PAHs and some HMs, were significantly higher during the heating period than during the non-heating period. However, most VOCs exhibited an opposite trend. Benzo[a]pyrene showed the highest cancer risk in both cities, followed by formaldehyde, arsenic, and benzene; trichloroethylene was the only species that exceeded the hazard quotient of 1. Cumulative cancer risks were 2.0 × 10-4 in Seoul and 2.7 × 10-4 in Incheon. Major sources and their contributions to each HAP concentration were estimated by positive matrix factorization modeling. Based on source-specific risk assessments, we suggest that both cities should give high priority to the control of traffic pollution and the supply of cleaner fuels in non-residential sectors. Reducing carbonyl concentrations in Seoul and industrial emissions in Incheon is also necessary. Establishing new ambient standards for benzo[a]pyrene and formaldehyde is worth considering as a long-term measure. Iron phosphate glasses with melting temperatures of ~ 1300 °C were developed to immobilize spent nuclear fuels. The glasses have densities of ~ 3.4 g/cm3 and glass transition temperatures of ~ 555 °C that are high enough to endure the temperatures in geological repositories. The waste loading of UO2 in the glass was ~ 33.73 wt%. Normalized elemental releases from the product consistency test were well below the regulated limit of 2 g/m2. Most of the U in the glass is in the 4 + state, which is more chemically durable than the 6 + state. UO8 polyhedra in the glass with five oxygens at the distance of 2.25 Å and three at 2.87 Å were formed. U atoms are connected to PO4 tetrahedra that form the phosphate glass network. Titanium monoxide (TiO) was added to host glass, which was heat-treated at 520 °C for 10 h to incorporate Ti into PbSe quantum dots (QDs) to control their band gaps. Incorporation of Ti ions into PbSe QDs was confirmed using electron energy loss spectroscopy analysis. Addition of TiO caused blue-shift of the absorption and photoluminescence (PL) bands of the QDs. Absorption bands moved from 1621 nm at TiO concentration [TiO] = 0.0% to 1418 nm at [TiO] = 0.4 mol%. Average diameters of QDs remained mostly unaffected (i.e., 6.25 ± 0.14 nm at [TiO] = 0.0% to 6.03 ± 0.1 nm at [TiO] = 0.4 mol%). The changes in absorption and PL bands originated from the incorporation of Ti ions into PbSe QDs. Band gaps of PbSe QDs increased from 0.76 eV at [TiO] = 0% to 0.88 eV at [TiO] = 0.4 mol%. This simple method to tune the band gap of PbSe QDs has possible applications in optical communication fiber amplifiers, infrared laser sources and saturable absorbers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To investigate the long-term nitrogen treatment efficiency in vertical-flow (VF)-horizontal-flow (HF) hybrid constructed wetlands (CWs), the nitrogen removal efficiency under different seasons, N loads, and three operating stages (representing age of the wetland) were evaluated over a 12-year period. The average total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiencies in the effluent during the operation period were in the following order: summer (75.2 %) > spring (73.4 %) ≒ autumn (72.6 %) > winter (66.4 %). The removal efficiencies of TN in summer, autumn, and spring were generally higher than those in winter. At different stages of operation (years), the average TN removal rates in the effluent were in the following order: middle stage (73.4 %; years 2006-2009) > last stage (72.0 %; years 2010-2013) > beginning stage (70.1 %; years 2002-2005). In VF-HF CWs, the amount of average TN removal (mg N m day) over the 12-year period was in the order of summer (5.5) ≒ autumn (5.1) > spring (4.3) ≒ winter (4.2) for the VF bed and in the order of summer (3.5) ≒ spring (3.5) ≒ autumn (3.3) > winter (2.7) for the HF bed, showing that the amount of TN removal per unit area (m) in summer was slightly greater than that in other seasons. The amount of TN removal in the VF bed was slightly greater than that in the HF bed. Using three-dimensional simulation graphs, the maximum TN removal rate was at inflow N loads below 2.7 g m day in the summer season, whereas the minimum TN removal rate was at inflow N loads below 1.4 g m day in the winter season. Consequently, the TN removal efficiency was very stable over the 12 years of operation in VF-HF hybrid CWs. The hyaloid vessel is a transient vascular network that nourishes the lens and the primary vitreous in the early developmental periods. In hyaloid vessels devoid of the support of astrocytes, we demonstrate that tight junction proteins, zonula occludens-1 and occludin, are regularly expressed at the junction of endothelial cells. To figure out the factor influencing the formation of tight junctions in hyaloid vessels, we further progress to investigate the interactions between endothelial cells and pericytes, two representative constituent cells in hyaloid vessels. Interestingly, endothelial cells interact with pericytes in the early postnatal periods and the interaction between two cell types provokes the up-regulation of transforming growth factor β1. Further in vitro experiments demonstrate that transforming growth factor β1 induces the activation of Smad2 and Smad3 and the formation of tight junction proteins. Taken together, in hyaloid vessels, pericytes seem to regulate the formation of tight junctions by the interaction with endothelial cells even without the support of astrocytes. Additionally, we suggest that the hyaloid vessel is a valuable system that can be utilized for the investigation of cell-cell interaction in the formation of tight junctions in developing vasculatures. The angiopoietin/Tie2 system is an important regulator of angiogenesis and inflammation. In addition to its functions in endothelial cells, Tie2 expression on non-endothelial cells allows for angiopoietin ligands to stimulate the cells. Although Ang1 is a strong Tie2 receptor agonist, little is known regarding the effect of Ang1 on non-endothelial cells, such as monocytes and macrophages. In this study, we found that Ang1 functionally binds to and stimulates monocytes via p38 and Erk1/2 phosphorylation. Ang1-mediated monocyte stimulation is associated with proinflammatory cytokine TNF-α expression. We also determined that Ang1 switched macrophage differentiation toward a pro-inflammatory phenotype, even in the presence of an anti-inflammatory mediator. These findings suggest that Ang1 plays a role in stimulating pro-inflammatory responses and could provide a new strategy by which to manage inflammatory responses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Emission characteristics of Ho-doped heavy-metal oxide and chalcogenide glasses were investigated and compared with those of conventional oxide glasses. In addition to the fluorescence at approximately 1.2 μm (5/6 → 5/8) and 2.0 μm (5/7 → 5/8), another mid-infrared emission was observed at 2.9 μm from the transition 5/6 → 5/7. The calculated radiative transition probability and multiphonon decay rate of the latter transition using Judd-Ofelt analysis indicated that the occurrence of the 2.9 μm fluorescence was directly related to the low vibrational phonon energy of the host glasses. The first 3-D direct observation of clusters of Nd oxide inside silicate glasses was achieved using atom probe tomography. Three-dimensional elemental maps of major chemical elements in glasses such as Si, Al, Zn and O showed no evidence of regions that had concentrations higher than the average values, whereas the Nd aggregated into regions of high concentration. Elemental maps of Nd and Pb recorded from the glasses containing PbS QDs showed highly-concentrated areas of both elements at the same locations; this result indicates that PbS QDs formation started in association with the Nd clusters. CdSe quantum dots (QDs) doped glasses have been widely investigated for optical filters, LED color converter and other optical emitters. Unlike CdSe QDs in solution, it is difficult to passivate the surface defects of CdSe QDs in glass matrix, which strongly suppress its intrinsic emission. In this study, surface passivation of CdSe quantum dots (QDs) by Cd1−xZnxSe shell in silicate glass was reported. An increase in the Se/Cd ratio can lead to the partial passivation of the surface states and appearance of the intrinsic emission of CdSe QDs. Optimizing the heat-treatment condition promotes the incorporation of Zn into CdSe QDs and results in the quenching of the defect emission. Formation of CdSe/Cd1−xZnxSe core/graded shell QDs is evidenced by the experimental results of TEM and Raman spectroscopy. Realization of the surface passivation and intrinsic emission of II-VI QDs may facilitate the wide applications of QDs doped all inorganic amorphous materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
