The Transformer-based method has demonstrated remarkable performance for image super-resolution in comparison to the method based on the convolutional neural networks (CNNs). However, using the self-attention mechanism like SwinIR (Image Restoration Using Swin Transformer) to extract feature information from images needs a significant amount of computational resources, which limits its application on low computing power platforms. To improve the model feature reuse, this research work proposes the Interval Dense Connection Strategy, which connects different blocks according to the newly designed algorithm. We apply this strategy to SwinIR and present a new model, which named SwinOIR (Object Image Restoration Using Swin Transformer). For image super-resolution, an ablation study is conducted to demonstrate the positive effect of the Interval Dense Connection Strategy on the model performance. Furthermore, we evaluate our model on various popular benchmark datasets, and compare it with other state-of-the-art (SOTA) lightweight models. For example, SwinOIR obtains a PSNR of 26.62 dB for × 4 upscaling image super-resolution on Urban100 dataset, which is 0.15 dB higher than the SOTA model SwinIR. For real-life application, this work applies the lastest version of You Only Look Once (YOLOv8) model and the proposed model to perform object detection and real-life image super-resolution on low-quality images. With the good performance of deep learning in the field of computer vision (CV), the convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures have become main backbones of image recognition tasks. With the widespread use of mobile devices, neural network models based on platforms with low computing power are gradually being paid attention. However, due to the limitation of computing power, deep learning algorithms are usually not available on mobile devices. This paper proposes a lightweight convolutional neural network TripleNet, which can operate easily on Raspberry Pi. Adopted from the concept of block connections in ThreshNet, the newly proposed network model compresses and accelerates the network model, reduces the amount of parameters of the network, and shortens the inference time of each image while ensuring the accuracy. Our proposed TripleNet and other State-of-the-Art (SOTA) neural networks perform image classification experiments with the CIFAR-10 and SVHN datasets on Raspberry Pi. The experimental results show that, compared with GhostNet, MobileNet, ThreshNet, EfficientNet, and HarDNet, the inference time of TripleNet per image is shortened by 15%, 16%, 17%, 24%, and 30%, respectively. To investigate sexual function in Chinese women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and to explore the correlation with clinical and biochemical characteristics. A cross-sectional study was designed in 1000 PCOS women, aged 18–45 years, via the Chinese version of Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) evaluating sexual function, with additional questions possibly related to sexual life. Clinical and biochemical characteristics likely to affect sexual function were determined, including anthropometric indicators, serum levels of hormones, luteinizing hormone to follicle-stimulating hormone ratio (LH/FSH ratio), prolactin (PRL), total testosterone (TT), free androgen index (FAI), sex-hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), glucose, and lipid metabolism indicators. Nine hundred ten PCOS women participated in the study, 685 patients were included after screening, and 211 were suitable to detect correlations of clinical and biochemical characteristics with sex function parameters. The mean total FSFI score was 24.19 ± 2.8; 79.56% of the women were at risk of female sexual dysfunction (FSD). Women doing regular aerobic exercise and use of contraception had higher FSFI scores, while those with a desire to conceive and clinical signs of hyperandrogenism had lower FSFI scores. There were negative associations of FSFI scores with age and body fat distribution. No significant associations between FSFI scores and hormonal factors (surprisingly including SHBG) were found, except for total testosterone and satisfaction (OR = 0.976, p = 0.002). HOMA-IR was significantly related to reduced desire score (OR = 0.914, p = 0.004) and lubrication score (OR = 0.964, p = 0.044). PCOS was associated with a high risk of FSD (defined according to FSFI) in about 80% of the women in our study, and clinical characteristics play a more important role. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

UTX (also known as KDM6A) encodes a histone H3K27 demethylase and is an important tumour suppressor that is frequently mutated in human cancers1. However, as the demethylase activity of UTX is often dispensable for mediating tumour suppression and developmental regulation2–8, the underlying molecular activity of UTX remains unknown. Here we show that phase separation of UTX underlies its chromatin-regulatory activity in tumour suppression. A core intrinsically disordered region (cIDR) of UTX forms phase-separated liquid condensates, and cIDR loss caused by the most frequent cancer mutation of UTX is mainly responsible for abolishing tumour suppression. Deletion, mutagenesis and replacement assays of the intrinsically disordered region demonstrate a critical role of UTX condensation in tumour suppression and embryonic stem cell differentiation. As shown by reconstitution in vitro and engineered systems in cells, UTX recruits the histone methyltransferase MLL4 (also known as KMT2D) to the same condensates and enriches the H3K4 methylation activity of MLL4. Moreover, UTX regulates genome-wide histone modifications and high-order chromatin interactions in a condensation-dependent manner. We also found that UTY, the Y chromosome homologue of UTX with weaker tumour-suppressive activity, forms condensates with reduced molecular dynamics. Adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADSCs) are considered to be seed cells in bone tissue engineering and emerging evidence indicates that circular RNAs (circRNAs) function in the osteogenic differentiation of ADSCs. The mechanisms of osteoblastic differentiation of ADSCs from the perspective of circRNA modulation are examined in this study. First, circRNA-23525 was upregulated during osteoblastic differentiation of ADSCs. Second, overexpression of circRNA-23525 increased Runx2, ALP and OCN at both mRNA and protein levels. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and Alizarin Red staining indicated a similar tendency. Silencing circRNA-23525 produced the opposite effect. Bioinformatics analysis with luciferase assays confirmed that circRNA-23525 functioned as a sponge for miR-30a-3p. In the osteoblastic differentiation of ADSCs, the dynamic expression of miR-30a-3p and circRNA-23525 resulted in an opposite trend at 3, 7 and 14 days. Overexpression of circRNA-23525 downregulated miR-30a-3p and knockdown of circRNA-23525 promoted the expression of miR-30a-3p. Bioinformatics methods and luciferase assays suggested that miR-30a-3p modulated Runx2 expression by targeting 3′UTR. Knockdown of miR-30a-3p facilitated osteogenesis in ADSCs and enhancing miR-30a-3p interfered with the osteogenic process. Finally, circRNA-23525 overexpression significantly increased Runx2 expression, while co-transfection of miR-30a-3p mimics reversed it. Runx2 expression was decreased in circRNA-23525-knockdown ADSCs but expression was rescued by including the miR-30a-3p inhibitor in the osteoblastic process. ALP activity and mineralized bone matrix confirmed the function of circRNA-23525/miR-30a-3p in osteogenesis. Taken together, the current study demonstrated that circRNA-23525 regulates Runx2 expression via targeting miR-30a-3p and is thus a positive regulator in the osteoblastic differentiation of ADSCs. The Novel Defense Hypothesis predicts that introduced plants may possess novel allelochemicals which act as a defense against native generalist enemies. Here, we aim to test if the chemicals involved in allelopathy in the invasive plant Wedelia trilobata can contribute to higher resistance against generalist herbivore and pathogen enemies by comparing with its native congener W. chinensis in controlled laboratory conditions. The allelopathic effects of the leaf extract from W. trilobata on the generalist enemies were also assessed. We showed that the larvae of two moth species preferred W. chinensis over W. trilobata. The growth rate of larvae feeding on W. trilobata leaves was significantly lower than those feeding on W. chinensis leaves. When detached leaves were inoculated with phytopathogens, the infected leaf area of W. trilobata was significantly smaller than that of W. chinensis. In addition, the leaf extract of W. trilobata also effectively inhibited the growth of the larvae and the mycelial growth of the phytopathogens. Our results indicate that the defenses of invasive W. trilobata against generalist herbivore and pathogen enemies are stronger than that of its native congener, which may be attributed to the allelopathic effects. This study provides novel insights that can comprehensively link the Novel Defense, Behavioral Constraint and Enemy Release hypotheses. These combined hypotheses would explain how invasive plants escape from their natural specialist enemies, where their allelopathic chemicals may deter herbivorous insects and inhibit pathogen infection. Several theories explaining the post-introduction evolution of invasive plants predict that specialist-enemy release often leads to decreased defense in introduced plants, but how novel generalist consumers in the introduced ranges affect plant-defense evolution remains largely unexplored. According to the shifting defense hypothesis, the decreased defense against specialist enemies may result in the increased defense against generalists. We compared resistance and tolerance of native (from the USA) and invasive populations (from China) of Spartina alterniflora to the dominant generalist insect Laelia coenosa in China. We also compared leaf traits between Spartina population origins. We found that Laelia had lower performance on invasive than on native Spartina populations. Native Spartina populations, however, had a greater capacity to compensate for leaf damage by Laelia than invasive ones. Although specific leaf area and leaf carbon content did not significantly vary between Spartina origins, invasive Spartina populations had lower leaf-nitrogen content than native populations. These results suggest that, following its introduction to China, Spartina has developed increased resistance but decreased tolerance to the generalist herbivore, which may be related to evolutionary increases in leaf carbon-to-nitrogen ratio. These findings enhance our understanding of invasive plant defense against generalist herbivores in the introduced ranges and highlight the trade-off between resistance and tolerance. Novel interactions between exotic plants and native herbivores can be driven by multiple ecological and evolutionary processes, but the underlying mechanisms have rarely been explored from a multitrophic perspective. In this study, we examined the effects of host plant quality and natural enemies on the host plant use of a native generalist Laelia coenosa, which was recently known to expand its host range from indigenous Phragmites australis to invasive exotic Spartina alterniflora in the wetlands of Yangtze Estuary, China. A field population survey showed that larval density of L. coenosa was significantly higher in S. alterniflora monocultures (SM) than in P. australis monocultures (PM) and patches in S. alterniflora-dominated communities (PIS). Nonetheless, an indoor rearing experiment suggested feeding on S. alterniflora significantly reduced larval growth rate, cocoon weight, adult lifespan and female lifetime fecundity of L. coenosa in comparison with P. australis. Despite an induced feeding preference in 5th instar larvae, both 1st and 3rd instar larvae of L. coenosa significantly preferred leaves of P. australis over S. alterniflora. These results contradicted the field population survey. Subsequent field experiments showed larval mortality of L. coenosa significantly increased in habitats with SM < PIS < PM. The same trend was observed in the egg parasitism rate of L. coenosa by a specialized parasitoid Telenomus laelia. Generally, our study suggests that the enemy-free space provided by the invasive S. alterniflora is important in driving the host expansion of L. coenosa to this inferior exotic plant. Cancer cachexia is a complex disorder characterized by inflammatory responses, and it is associated with poor performance status and high mortality rate of cancer patients. Carboxyamidotriazole (CAI), a noncytotoxic chemotherapy agent, shows anti-inflammatory features in the treatment of many diseases. Here, we investigated the preventive and therapeutic effects of CAI on muscle loss that occurred in mice with advanced Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC). The carcass weights of CAI-treated mice were significantly higher than that of mice in the vehicle group from Day 19 to the end of the study. The gastrocnemius and epididymal adipose tissue weights were also increased by CAI treatment. The protective mechanisms might be attributed to the following points: CAI treatment inhibited the proteolysis in muscles by decreasing expressions of muscle-specific FoxO3 transcription factor and ubiquitin E3 ligases (MuRF1 and atrogin1). Moreover, CAI restricted the NF-κB signaling, downregulated the level of TNF-α in muscle and both TNF-α and IL-6 levels in serum, directly stimulated SIRT1 activity in vitro, and increased SIRT1 content in muscle. Plant invasions can alter the trophic interactions of invaded ecosystems because of phenological differences between native and invasive plants that may affect the population dynamics and diets of indigenous arthropod herbivores. This issue, however, has seldom been studied. We here report on how abundance and diet of a local tussock moth ( Laelia coenosa) are affected by the invasive plant Spartina alterniflora in a Chinese salt marsh previously dominated by the moth's native host plant, Phragmites australis. We monitored the population dynamics of L. coenosa from four types of hosts: (1) Phragmites in its monoculture, (2) Spartina in its monoculture, and either (3) Phragmites, or (4) Spartina in Phragmites- Spartina mixtures. Additionally, we tested the diet of L. coenosa from the mixtures with isotope analysis. We found that the larval densities of L. coenosa were similar on Spartina and Phragmites in their respective monocultures and mixtures in summer but were greater on Spartina than on Phragmites in autumn. Stable isotope analysis showed that Spartina was a food resource for L. coenosa. The change in the insect's population dynamics associated with Spartina invasion might be caused by phenological differences between Spartina and Phragmites in that Spartina has a longer growing season than Phragmites. Our study indicates that the extended phenology of Spartina invasion has altered the abundance and diet of the indigenous herbivorous insect ( L. coenosa) previously feeding on native Phragmites. We predict such alternation may increase the consuming pressure to native plants via apparent competition, and thereby may facilitate the further invasion of the exotic plants in the salt marsh. The development, survivorship and reproduction of red palm weevil Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, reared on five ornamental palm slices, were studied in the laboratory at constant temperature of 26°C. The developmental time of R. ferrugineus was 68.8 days on Washington palm ( Washingtonia filifera), 74.1 days on Canary Island date palm ( Phoenix canariensis), 82.1 days on Chusan palm ( Trachycarpus fortunei), 85.4 days on pindo palm ( Butia capitata) and 90.6 days on silver date palm ( Phoenix sylvestris), respectively, and the developmental time on silver date palm was significantly longer than that on the other plants. The survival of immature R. ferrugineus ranged from 25.0 to 38.3%. Most mature larvae began to pupate at eighth-instar on Canary Island date palm and Washington palm, while on Chusan palm, Pindo palm and silver date palm, most of them began to pupate at ninth-instar. The mean lifetime fecundity of R. ferrugineus on Canary Island date palm, Chusan palm, Pindo palm, Washington palm and silver date palm was 267.8, 134.0, 109.8, 216.0, and 131.4 eggs, respectively, and lifetime fecundity on Canary Island date palm and Washington palm was significantly greater than that on the other plants. The intrinsic rate of natural increase ( r), net reproductive rate ( R) and mean generation time ( T) were 0.038, 78.3 and 115.0 days on Canary Island date palm, 0.028, 33.1 and 125.5 days on Chusan palm, 0.029, 40.9 and 128.2 days on Pindo palm, 0.041, 64.0, 101.4 days on Washington palm, and 0.025, 30.6, 135.6 days on silver date palm, respectively. Based on population growth parameters, it is concluded that Canary Island date palm and Washington palm were the more suitable host plants and silver date palm was the least suitable host plant for R. ferrugineus. Although increases in mean temperature (MT) and extreme high temperature (EHT) can greatly affect population dynamics of insects under global warming, how concurrent changes in both MT and EHT affect invasive species is largely unknown. We used four thermal regimes to simulate the increases in summer temperature and compared their effects on the life-history traits of three geographical populations (Chongqing, Wuhan and Shanghai) of an invasive insect, Corythucha ciliata, in China. The four thermal regimes were control (i.e., natural or ambient), an increase in MT (IMT), an increase in EHT, and a combination of IMT + EHT. We found that the three warming regimes significantly increased the developmental rate but did not affect the survival, sex ratio, longevity, or fecundity of C. ciliata. Consequently, the intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm) was enhanced and the number of days required for population doubling (t) was reduced by the warming regimes. The demographic parameters did not significantly differ among the three populations. These results indicate that population size of C. ciliata may be enhanced by increases in both temperature means and extremes. The increases in summer temperature associated with climate change, therefore, would likely facilitate population outbreaks of some thermophilic invasive insects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
