Although chromium trihalides are widely regarded as a promising class of two-dimensional magnets for next-generation devices, an accurate description of their electronic structure and magnetic interactions has proven challenging to achieve. Here, we quantify electronic excitations and spin interactions in CrX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) using embedded many-body wavefunction calculations and fully generalized spin Hamiltonians. We find that the three trihalides feature comparable d-shell excitations, consisting of a high-spin 4A2 ( t 2 g 3 e g 0 ) ground state lying 1.5–1.7 eV below the first excited state 4T2 ( t 2 g 2 e g 1 ). CrCl3 exhibits a single-ion anisotropy Asia = − 0.02 meV, while the Cr spin-3/2 moments are ferromagnetically coupled through bilinear and biquadratic exchange interactions of J1 = − 0.97 meV and J2 = − 0.05 meV, respectively. The corresponding values for CrBr3 and CrI3 increase to Asia = −0.08 meV and Asia= − 0.12 meV for the single-ion anisotropy, J1 = −1.21 meV, J2 = −0.05 meV and J1 = −1.38 meV, J2 = −0.06 meV for the exchange couplings, respectively. We find that the overall magnetic anisotropy is defined by the interplay between Asia and Adip due to magnetic dipole–dipole interaction that favors in-plane orientation of magnetic moments in ferromagnetic monolayers and bulk layered magnets. The competition between the two contributions sets CrCl3 and CrI3 as the easy-plane (Asia + Adip >0) and easy-axis (Asia + Adip <0) ferromagnets, respectively. The differences between the magnets trace back to the atomic radii of the halogen ligands and the magnitude of spin–orbit coupling. Fractional charges are one of the wonders of the fractional quantum Hall effect. Such objects are also anticipated in two-dimensional hexagonal lattices under time reversal symmetry—emerging as bound states of a rotating bond texture called a Kekulé vortex. However, the physical mechanisms inducing such topological defects remain elusive, preventing experimental realization. Here, we report the observation of Kekulé vortices in the local density of states of graphene under time reversal symmetry. The vortices result from intervalley scattering on chemisorbed hydrogen adatoms. We uncover that their 2π winding is reminiscent of the Berry phase π of the massless Dirac electrons. We can also induce a Kekulé pattern without vortices by creating point scatterers such as divacancies, which break different point symmetries. Our local-probe study thus confirms point defects as versatile building blocks for Kekulé engineering of graphene's electronic structure. Kekulé vortices in hexagonal lattices can host fractionalized charges at zero magnetic field, but have remained out of experimental reach. We have developed a strong-coupling perturbation scheme for a general doped Hubbard model around a particle-hole-symmetric reference system, which is free from the fermionic sign problem. Our approach is based on the lattice determinantal Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method in both continuous and discrete time versions for large periodic clusters in a fermionic bath. By considering the first-order perturbation in the shift of the chemical potential and the second-neighbor hopping, we are able to obtain an accurate electronic spectral function for a range of parameters that correspond to optimally doped cuprate systems at temperatures of up to T = 0.1t, which are challenging to access using straightforward lattice QMC calculations. We also discuss the formation of the pseudogap and the nodal-antinodal dichotomy for a doped Hubbard system with the interaction parameter U equal to the bandwidth and the optimal value of the next-nearest-neighbor hopping parameter t ′ for high-temperature superconducting cuprates. Despite its simplicity and relevance for the description of electronic correlations in solids, the Hubbard model is seldom inarguably realized in real materials. Here, we show that monolayer Nb3Cl8 is an ideal candidate to be described within a single-orbital Hubbard model, constructed within a "molecular" rather than atomic basis set using ab initio constrained random phase approximation calculations. We provide the necessary ingredients to connect experimental reality with ab initio material descriptions and correlated electron theory, which clarifies that monolayer Nb3Cl8 is a Mott insulator with a gap of about 1.4 to 2.0 eV depending on its dielectric environment. Comparisons to an atomistic three-orbital model show that the single-molecular-orbital description is adequate and reliable. We further comment on the electronic and magnetic structure of the compound and show that the Mott insulating state survives in the low-temperature bulk phases of the material featuring distinct experimentally verifiable characteristics. The non-trivial phase structure of the eigenstates of many-body quantum systems severely limits the applicability of quantum Monte Carlo, variational, and machine learning methods. Here, we study real-valued signful ground-state wave functions of frustrated quantum spin systems and, assuming that the tasks of finding wave function amplitudes and signs can be separated, show that the signs can be easily bootstrapped from the amplitudes. We map the problem of finding the sign structure to an auxiliary classical Ising model defined on a subset of the Hilbert space basis. We show that the Ising model does not exhibit significant frustrations even for highly frustrated parental quantum systems, and is solvable with a fully deterministic O (K log K) -time combinatorial algorithm (where K is the Ising model size). Given the ground state amplitudes, we reconstruct the signs of the ground states of several frustrated quantum models, thereby revealing the hidden simplicity of many-body sign structures. The complexity of many-body sign structures is one of the major issues that severely limits the applicability of variational and quantum Monte Carlo algorithms for calculating properties of quantum many-body systems. Many strongly correlated transition metal insulators are colored, even though they have band gaps much larger than the highest energy photons from the visible light. An adequate explanation for the color requires a theoretical approach able to compute subgap excitons in periodic crystals, reliably and without free parameters—a formidable challenge. The literature often fails to disentangle two important factors: what makes excitons form and what makes them optically bright. We pick two archetypal cases as examples: NiO with green color and MnF2 with pink color, and employ two kinds of ab initio many body Green's function theories; the first, a perturbative theory based on low-order extensions of the GW approximation, is able to explain the color in NiO, while the same theory is unable to explain why MnF2 is pink. We show its color originates from higher order spin-flip transitions that modify the optical response, which is contained in dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). We show that symmetry lowering mechanisms may determine how 'bright' these excitons are, but they are not fundamental to their existence. Strongly correlated transition metal insulators are often coloured. Understanding the underlying optical response from first-principles calculations is challenging. We study intrinsic charge-carrier scattering mechanisms and determine their contribution to the transport properties of the two-dimensional ferromagnet Fe3GeTe2. We use state-of-the-art first-principles calculations combined with the model approaches to elucidate the role of the electron-phonon and electron-magnon interactions in the electronic transport. Our findings show that the charge carrier scattering in Fe3GeTe2 is dominated by the electron-phonon interaction, while the role of magnetic excitations is marginal. At the same time, the magnetic ordering is shown to effect essentially on the electron-phonon coupling and its temperature dependence. This leads to a sublinear temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity near the Curie temperature, which is in line with experimental observations. The room temperature resistivity is estimated to be ~ 35 μΩ ⋅ cm which may be considered as a lower intrinsic limit for monolayer Fe3GeTe2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Monolayer CrSBr is a recently discovered semiconducting spin-3/2 ferromagnet with a Curie temperature of around 146 K. In contrast to many other known 2D magnets, the orthorhombic lattice of CrSBr gives rise to spatial anisotropy of magnetic excitations within the 2D plane. Triaxial magnetic anisotropy and considerable magnetic dipolar interactions in CrSBr challenge its theoretical description in terms of spin Hamiltonians. Here, we employ a Green's function formalism combined with first-principles calculations to study the magnetic properties of monolayer CrSBr in different regimes of surrounding dielectric screening. In the free-standing limit, the system is close to an easy-plane magnet, whose long-range ordering is partially suppressed. On the contrary, in the regime of large external screening, monolayer CrSBr behaves like an easy-axis ferromagnet with more stable magnetic ordering. Bulk FeSe becomes superconducting below 9 K, but the critical temperature (Tc) is enhanced almost universally by a factor of ~4–5 when it is intercalated with alkali elements. How intercalation modifies the structure is known from in-situ X-ray and neutron scattering techniques, but why Tc changes so dramatically is not known. Here we show that there is one-to-one correspondence between the enhancement in magnetic instabilities at certain q vectors and superconducting pairing vertex, even while the nuclear spin relaxation rate 1/(T1T) may not reflect this enhancement. Intercalation modifies electronic screening both in the plane and also between layers. We disentangle quantitatively how superconducting pairing vertex gains from each such changes in electronic screening. Intercalated FeSe provides an archetypal example of superconductivity where information derived from the single-particle electronic structure appears to be insufficient to account for the origins of superconductivity, even when they are computed including correlation effects. We show that the five-fold enhancement in Tc on intercalation is not sensitive to the exact position of the dxy at Γ point, as long as it stays close to EF. Finally, we show that intercalation also significantly softens the collective charge excitations, suggesting the electron-phonon interaction could play some role in intercalated FeSe. The quantum Hall (QH) effect in two-dimensional electron systems (2DESs) is conventionally observed at liquid-helium temperatures, where lattice vibrations are strongly suppressed and bulk carrier scattering is dominated by disorder. However, due to large Landau level (LL) separation (~2000 K at B = 30 T), graphene can support the QH effect up to room temperature (RT), concomitant with a non-negligible population of acoustic phonons with a wave-vector commensurate to the inverse electronic magnetic length. Here, we demonstrate that graphene encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) realizes a novel transport regime, where dissipation in the QH phase is governed predominantly by electron-phonon scattering. Investigating thermally-activated transport at filling factor 2 up to RT in an ensemble of back-gated devices, we show that the high B-field behaviour correlates with their zero B-field transport mobility. By this means, we extend the well-accepted notion of phonon-limited resistivity in ultra-clean graphene to a hitherto unexplored high-field realm. Monolayer graphene can support the quantum Hall effect up to room temperature. The influence of interface electronic structure is vital to control lower dimensional superconductivity and its applications to gated superconducting electronics, and superconducting layered heterostructures. Lower dimensional superconductors are typically synthesized on insulating substrates to reduce interfacial driven effects that destroy superconductivity and delocalize the confined wavefunction. Here, we demonstrate that the hybrid electronic structure formed at the interface between a lead film and a semiconducting and highly anisotropic black phosphorus substrate significantly renormalizes the superconductivity in the lead film. Using ultra-low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we characterize the renormalization of lead's quantum well states, its superconducting gap, and its vortex structure which show strong anisotropic characteristics. Density functional theory calculations confirm that the renormalization of superconductivity is driven by hybridization at the interface which modifies the confinement potential and imprints the anisotropic characteristics of the semiconductor substrate on selected regions of the Fermi surface of lead. Using an analytical model, we link the modulated superconductivity to an anisotropy that selectively tunes the superconducting order parameter in reciprocal space. These results illustrate that interfacial hybridization can be used to tune superconductivity in quantum technologies based on lower dimensional superconducting electronics. Recently fabricated InSe monolayers exhibit remarkable characteristics that indicate the potential of this material to host a number of many-body phenomena. In this work, we systematically describe collective electronic effects in hole-doped InSe monolayers using advanced many-body techniques. To this end, we derive a realistic electronic-structure model from first principles that takes into account the most important characteristics of this material, including a flat band with prominent van Hove singularities in the electronic spectrum, strong electron–phonon coupling, and weakly screened long-ranged Coulomb interactions. We calculate the temperature-dependent phase diagram as a function of band filling and observe that this system is in a regime with coexisting charge density wave and ferromagnetic instabilities that are driven by strong electronic Coulomb correlations. This regime can be achieved at realistic doping levels and high enough temperatures, and can be verified experimentally. We find that the electron–phonon interaction does not play a crucial role in these effects, effectively suppressing the local Coulomb interaction without changing the qualitative physical picture. Excitons with large binding energies ~2–3 eV in CrX3 have been characterized as being localized (Frenkel) excitons that emerge from the atomic d − d transitions between the Cr-3d-t2g and eg orbitals. The argument has gathered strength in recent years as the excitons in recently made monolayers are found at almost the same energies as the bulk. The Laporte rule, which restricts such parity forbidden atomic transitions, can relax if a symmetry-breaking mechanism is present. While what can be classified as a purely Frenkel exciton is a matter of definition, we show using an advanced first principles parameter-free approach that these excitons in CrX3, in both its bulk and monolayer variants, have band origin and it is the dp hybridization between Cr and X that primarily acts as the symmetry-breaking mechanism that relaxes the Laporte rule. We show that the character of these excitons is mostly determined by the Cr-d orbital manifold, nevertheless, the fractions of the spectral weight shared with the ligand halogen states increases as the dp hybridization enhances. The hybridization enhances as the halogen atom becomes heavier, bringing the X-p states closer to the Cr-d states in the sequence Cl → Br → I, with an attendant increase in exciton intensity and a decrease in binding energy. By applying a range of different kinds of perturbations that qualitatively mimics the effects originating from the missing vertex in self-energy, we show that moderate changes to the two-particle Hamiltonian that essentially modifies the Cr-d-X-p hybridization, can alter both the intensities and positions of the exciton peaks. A detailed analysis of several deep-lying excitons, with and without strain, elucidates the fact that the exciton is most Frenkel-like in CrCl3 and CrBr3 and acquires mixed Frenkel–Wannier character in CrI3, making the excitons in CrI3 most susceptible to environmental screening and spin–orbit coupling. We study the physics of high-temperature cuprate superconductors starting from the highly degenerate four-site plaquette of the t − t ′ − U Hubbard model as a reference system. The degeneracy causes strong fluctuations when a lattice of plaquettes is constructed. We show that there is a large binding energy between holes when a set of four plaquettes is considered. The next-nearest-neighbour hopping t ′ plays a crucial role in the formation of these strongly bound electronic bipolarons whose coherence at lower temperature could be the explanation for superconductivity. A complementary approach is cluster dual fermion starting from a single degenerate plaquette, which contains the relevant short-ranged fluctuations from the beginning. It gives d-wave superconductivity as the leading instability under a reasonably broad range of parameters. The origin of the pseudogap is also discussed in terms of the coupling of degenerate plaquettes. First-principles approaches have been successful in solving many-body Hamiltonians for real materials to an extent when correlations are weak or moderate. As the electronic correlations become stronger often embedding methods based on first-principles approaches are used to better treat the correlations by solving a suitably chosen many-body Hamiltonian with a higher level theory. The success of such embedding theories, often referred to as second-principles, is commonly measured by the quality of self-energy Σ which is either a function of energy or momentum or both. However, Σ should, in principle, also modify the electronic eigenfunctions and thus change the real space charge distribution. While such practices are not prevalent, some works that use embedding techniques do take into account these effects. In such cases, choice of partitioning, of the parameters defining the correlated Hamiltonian, of double-counting corrections, and the adequacy of low-level Hamiltonian hosting the correlated subspace hinder a systematic and unambiguous understanding of such effects. Further, for a large variety of correlated systems, strong correlations are largely confined to the charge sector. Then an adequate nonlocal low-order theory is important, and the high-order local correlations embedding contributes become redundant. Here we study the impact of charge self-consistency within two example cases, TiSe2 and CrBr3, and show how real space charge re-distribution due to correlation effects taken into account within a first-principles Green's function-based many-body perturbative approach is key in driving qualitative changes to the final electronic structure of these materials. It was recently shown that the Madelung equations, that is, a hydrodynamic form of the Schrödinger equation, can be derived from a canonical ensemble of neural networks where the quantum phase was identified with the free energy of hidden variables. We consider instead a grand canonical ensemble of neural networks, by allowing an exchange of neurons with an auxiliary subsystem, to show that the free energy must also be multivalued. By imposing the multivaluedness condition on the free energy we derive the Schrödinger equation with “Planck’s constant” determined by the chemical potential of hidden variables. This shows that quantum mechanics provides a correct statistical description of the dynamics of the grand canonical ensemble of neural networks at the learning equilibrium. Despite serious effort, the nature of the magnetic interactions and the role of electron-correlation effects in magnetic two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals materials remains elusive. Using CrI3 as a model system, we show that the calculated electronic structure including nonlocal electron correlations yields spin excitations consistent with inelastic neutron-scattering measurements. Remarkably, this approach identifies an unreported correlation-enhanced interlayer super-superexchange, which rotates the magnon Dirac lines off, and introduces a gap along the high-symmetry Γ-K-M path. This discovery provides a different perspective on the gap-opening mechanism observed in CrI3, which was previously associated with spin–orbit coupling through the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction or Kitaev interaction. Our observation elucidates the critical role of electron correlations on the spin ordering and spin dynamics in magnetic van der Waals materials and demonstrates the necessity of explicit treatment of electron correlations in the broad family of 2D magnetic materials. Neural quantum states (NQS) attract a lot of attention due to their potential to serve as a very expressive variational ansatz for quantum many-body systems. Here we study the main factors governing the applicability of NQS to frustrated magnets by training neural networks to approximate ground states of several moderately-sized Hamiltonians using the corresponding wave function structure on a small subset of the Hilbert space basis as training dataset. We notice that generalization quality, i.e. the ability to learn from a limited number of samples and correctly approximate the target state on the rest of the space, drops abruptly when frustration is increased. We also show that learning the sign structure is considerably more difficult than learning amplitudes. Finally, we conclude that the main issue to be addressed at this stage, in order to use the method of NQS for simulating realistic models, is that of generalization rather than expressibility. Neural network representations of quantum states are hoped to provide an efficient basis for numerical methods without the need for case-by-case trial wave functions. A properly strained graphene monolayer or bilayer is expected to harbour periodic pseudo-magnetic fields with high symmetry, yet to date, a convincing demonstration of such pseudo-magnetic fields has been lacking, especially for bilayer graphene. Here, we report a definitive experimental proof for the existence of large-area, periodic pseudo-magnetic fields, as manifested by vortex lattices in commensurability with the moiré patterns of low-angle twisted bilayer graphene. The pseudo-magnetic fields are strong enough to confine the massive Dirac electrons into circularly localized pseudo-Landau levels, as observed by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, and also corroborated by tight-binding calculations. We further demonstrate that the geometry, amplitude, and periodicity of the pseudo-magnetic fields can be fine-tuned by both the rotation angle and heterostrain. Collectively, the present study substantially enriches twisted bilayer graphene as a powerful enabling platform for exploration of new and exotic physical phenomena, including quantum valley Hall effects and quantum anomalous Hall effects. Precisely strained graphene layers can enable observation of periodic pseudo-magnetic fields with high symmetry. Dodecagonal bilayer graphene quasicrystal has 12-fold rotational order but lacks translational symmetry which prevents the application of band theory. In this paper, we study the electronic and optical properties of graphene quasicrystal with large-scale tight-binding calculations involving more than ten million atoms. We propose a series of periodic approximants which reproduce accurately the properties of quasicrystal within a finite unit cell. By utilizing the band-unfolding method on the smallest approximant with only 2702 atoms, the effective band structure of graphene quasicrystal is derived. The features, such as the emergence of new Dirac points (especially the mirrored ones), the band gap at M point and the Fermi velocity are all in agreement with recent experiments. The properties of quasicrystal states are identified in the Landau level spectrum and optical excitations. Importantly, our results show that the lattice mismatch is the dominant factor determining the accuracy of layered approximants. The proposed approximants can be used directly for other layered materials in honeycomb lattice, and the design principles can be applied for any quasi-periodic incommensurate structures. The extraordinary strength, stiffness and lightness of graphene have generated great expectations of its application in flexible electronics and as a mechanical reinforcement agent. However, the presence of lattice defects, unavoidable in sheets obtained by scalable routes, might degrade its mechanical properties. Here we report a systematic study on the elastic modulus and strength of graphene with a controlled density of defects. Counter-intuitively, the in-plane Young's modulus increases with increasing defect density up to almost twice the initial value for a vacancy content of ∼0.2%. For a higher density of vacancies, the elastic modulus decreases with defect inclusions. The initial increase in Young's modulus is explained in terms of a dependence of the elastic coefficients on the momentum of flexural modes predicted for two-dimensional membranes. In contrast, the fracture strength decreases with defect density according to standard fracture continuum models. These quantitative structure-property relationships, measured in atmospheric conditions, are of fundamental and technological relevance and provide guidance for applications in which graphene mechanics represents a disruptive improvement. A considerable success in phenomenological description of high-T c superconductors has been achieved within the paradigm of Quantum Critical Point (QCP)—a parental state of a variety of exotic phases that is characterized by dense entanglement and absence of well-defined quasiparticles. However, the microscopic origin of the critical regime in real materials remains an open question. On the other hand, there is a popular view that a single-band t- t ′ Hubbard model is the minimal model to catch the main relevant physics of superconducting compounds. Here, we suggest that emergence of the QCP is tightly connected with entanglement in real space and identify its location on the phase diagram of the hole-doped t- t ′ Hubbard model. To detect the QCP we study a weighted graph of inter-site quantum mutual information within a four-by-four plaquette that is solved by exact diagonalization. We demonstrate that some quantitative characteristics of such a graph, viewed as a complex network, exhibit peculiar behavior around a certain submanifold in the parametric space of the model. This method allows us to overcome difficulties caused by finite size effects and to identify precursors of the transition point even on a small lattice, where long-range asymptotics of correlation functions cannot be accessed. We study the Aharonov–Bohm effect in an open-ended tube made of a graphene sheet whose dimensions are much larger than the interatomic distance in graphene. An external magnetic field vanishes on and in the vicinity of the graphene sheet and its flux through the tube is adiabatically switched on. It is shown that, in the process, the energy levels of the tight-binding Hamiltonian of π -electrons unavoidably cross the Fermi level, which results in the creation of electron–hole pairs. The number of pairs is proven to be equal to the number of magnetic flux quanta of the external field. The proof is based on the new notion of partial spectral flow, which generalizes the ordinary spectral flow already having well-known applications (such as the Kopnin forces in superconductors and superfluids) in condensed matter physics. Correlation effects in CuO2 layers give rise to a complicated landscape of collective excitations in high-Tc cuprates. Their description requires an accurate account for electronic fluctuations at a very broad energy range and remains a challenge for the theory. Particularly, there is no conventional explanation of the experimentally observed "resonant" antiferromagnetic mode, which is often considered to be a mediator of superconductivity. Here we model spin excitations of the hole-doped cuprates in the paramagnetic regime and show that this antiferromagnetic mode is associated with electronic transitions between anti-nodal X and Y points of the quasiparticle band that is pinned to the Fermi level. We observe that upon doping of 7–12%, the electronic spectral weight redistribution leads to the formation of a very stable quasiparticle dispersion due to strong correlation effects. The reconstruction of the Fermi surface results in a flattening of the quasiparticle band at the vicinity of the nodal MΓ/2 point, accompanied by a high density of charge carriers. Collective excitations of electrons between the nodal MΓ/2 and XM/2 points form the additional magnetic holes state in magnetic spectrum, which protects the antiferromagnetic fluctuation. Further investigation of the evolution of spin fluctuations with the temperature and doping allowed us to observe the incipience of the antiferromagnetic ordering already in the paramagnetic regime above the transition temperature. Additionally, apart from the most intensive low-energy magnetic excitations, the magnetic spectrum reveals less intensive collective spin fluctuations that correspond to electronic processes between peaks of the single-particle spectral function. Stepanov from the Radboud University in the Netherlands and Ural Federal University in Russia model spin excitations of hole-doped cuprates with respect to doping level and temperature. They observe Fermi surface reconstruction in the collective spin excitation spectrum, where magnetic holes state forms due to strong correlation effects. The evolution of spin fluctuations with temperature and doping allows them to observe the incipience of a resonant antiferromagnetic order in the paramagnetic regime above the transition temperature. The interplay of Coulomb and electron–phonon interactions with thermal and quantum fluctuations facilitates rich phase diagrams in two-dimensional electron systems. Layered transition metal dichalcogenides hosting charge, excitonic, spin and superconducting order form an epitomic material class in this respect. Theoretical studies of materials like NbS2 have focused on the electron–phonon coupling, whereas the Coulomb interaction, particularly strong in the monolayer limit, remained essentially untouched. Here, we analyze the interplay of short- and long-range Coulomb as well as electron–phonon interactions in NbS2 monolayers. The combination of these interactions causes electronic correlations that are fundamentally different to what would be expected from the interaction terms separately. The fully interacting electronic spectral function resembles the non-interacting band structure but with appreciable broadening. An unexpected coexistence of strong charge and spin fluctuations puts NbS2 close to spin and charge order, suggesting monolayer NbS2 as a platform for atomic scale engineering of electronic quantum phases. NbS2: many-body interactions enhance quantum fluctuations A theoretical study taking account of electron–electron interactions and electron–phonon interactions reveals enhanced quantum fluctuations in monolayer NbS2. Erik van Loon from the Institute for Molecules and Materials at Radboud University and an international team of collaborators perform theoretical studies to treat both electron–phonon interactions and electronic correlations resulting from competing short- and long-range Coulomb interactions in monolayer NbS2. They reveal a simultaneous enhancement of the charge and spin susceptibilities and a sharp transition from tendencies of preferential spin ordering to charge ordering. The results call for caution on the treatment of properties such as magnetic and charge susceptibilities as the electronic correlation effects will come into play beyond the single-particle level, despite a match between photoemission experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. A magnetic atom epitomizes the scaling limit for magnetic information storage. Individual atomic spins have recently exhibited magnetic remanence, a requirement for magnetic memory. However, such memory has been only realized on thin insulating surfaces, removing potential tunability via electronic gating or exchange-driven magnetic coupling. Here, we show a previously unobserved mechanism for single-atom magnetic storage based on bistability in the orbital population, or so-called valency, of an individual Co atom on semiconducting black phosphorus (BP). Ab initio calculations reveal that distance-dependent screening from the BP surface stabilizes the two distinct valencies, each with a unique orbital population, total magnetic moment, and spatial charge density. Excellent correspondence between the measured and predicted charge densities reveal that such orbital configurations can be accessed and manipulated without a spin-sensitive readout mechanism. This orbital memory derives stability from the energetic barrier to atomic relaxation, demonstrating the potential for high-temperature single-atom information storage. Single-atom storage can dramatically exceed the limit of traditional high-density memory devices but is challenging. Here the authors show the bistability in the orbital configuration of a single Co atom on black phosphorus which can be accessed, manipulated and has potential for high-temperature single-atom information storage.
