The purpose of this study is to investigate the thermal characteristics of Mg1− XCaXFe2O4 ferrite powder by applying AC magnetic field and to predict the effect of thermal coagulation in vivo. We found that heating characteristics of the ferrite powder became greater as the frequency through the 400 kHz to 700 kHz range. The highest heat generation was attained using 7–15 nm ferrite powder. We also carried out a heat transfer simulation in which we were able to demonstrate that this material has sufficient heat generating characteristics to thermally coagulate a tumor cell and that it is possible to predict the range of the coagulation from the present simulation. Selection of ferrite powder was carried out to realize a thermal coagulation technique in which tumors are locally heated by an application of alternating magnetic field from external coils. Magnesium ferrite (MgFe2O4) showed the largest increase in temperature (?T) under an alternating magnetic field in all the ferrites examined. For all the samples, ?Tvalue under alternating magnetic field was increased with an increase in frequency (200-500 kHz). The heating ability for the Mg-ferrite was ca. 1.4 W/g under alternating magnetic field of 4.0 kA/m (200 W, 370 kHz). Objective: The aim of this study was to compare Sephadex G-200 (Sephadex)-induced airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) and pulmonary eosinophilia among some rat strains.¶ Materials: Sprague-Dawley (SD), Brown-Norway (BN), Fischer 344 (Fischer), Lewis and Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats were used.¶ Methods: Sephadex (0.5 mg/animal) was intravenously administered on days 0, 2 and 5. Measurement of AHR using serotonin and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) was performed on day 7.¶ Results: The Lewis strain exhibited significant AHR to Sephadex but the BN, Fischer and WKY strains did not. Additionally, the degree of AHR in Lewis rats was smaller than in SD rats throughout the study. Eosinophils in BAL fluid, however, increased in each strain, and the magnitude of the response was BN > Lewis > WKY > Fischer. Both the AHR and pulmonary eosinophilia in Lewis rats were inhibited by dexamethasone (0.1 mg/kg, p.o. × 3).¶ Conclusion: These results indicate that the Lewis rat is a useful strain for analysis of the mechanism of Sephadex-induced AHR and airway inflammation. When familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is diagnosed in a patient, prophylactic surgery must be performed whether colorectal cancer is present or not. Operations for FAP have been performed through a large median abdominal incision or an additional perineal incision, depending on the coexistence of rectal cancer. Recently, we reported a technique of laparoscopic rectal amputation without abdominal skin incision for patients with rectal cancer to minimize postoperative cardiac and respiratory complications [6]. In this article, we report a case of laparoscopically assisted proctocolectomy with ileostomy through a minimal abdominal and perineal skin incision performed by a hand-assisted procedure. The purpose of combining the perineal and laparoscopic approaches is to minimize the skin incision, while retaining a rate of cure and safety equivalent to those of conventional rectal amputation, by using the advantages of laparoscopic procedures, and to facilitate postoperative recovery and improve the quality of life for relatively young patients with FAP.
