The structural analysis of nanocrystals via transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is a valuable technique for the material science field. Recently, two-dimensional images by scanning TEM (STEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) have successfully extended to three-dimensional (3D) imaging by tomography. However, despite improving TEM instruments and measurement techniques, detector shadowing, the missing-wedge problem, X-ray absorption effects, etc., significant challenges still remain; therefore, the various required corrections should be considered and applied when performing quantitative tomography. Nonetheless, this 3D reconstruction technique can facilitate active site analysis and the development of nanocatalyst systems, such as water electrolysis and fuel cell. Herein, we present a 3D reconstruction technique to obtain tomograms of IrNi rhombic dodecahedral nanoframes (IrNi-RFs) from STEM and EDS images by applying simultaneous iterative reconstruction technique and total variation minimization algorithms. From characterizing the morphology and spatial chemical composition of the Ir and Ni atoms in the nanoframes, we were able to infer the origin of the physical and catalytic durability of IrNi-RFs. Also, by calculating the surface area and volume of the 3D reconstructed model, we were able to quantify the Ir-to-Ni composition ratio and compare it to the EDS measurement result. Background: The centromere is the special region on a chromosome, which serves as the site for assembly of kinetochore complex and is essential for maintaining genomic integrity. Neocentromeres are new centromeres that form on the non-centromeric regions of the chromosome when the natural centromere is disrupted or inactivated. Although neocentromeres lack the typical features found in centromeres, cells with neocentromeres divide normally during mitosis and meiosis. Neocentromeres not only arise naturally but their formation can also be induced experimentally. Therefore, neocentromeres are a great tool for studying functions and formation of centromeres. Objective: To study neocentromeres and use that knowledge to gain insights into the epigenetic regulation of canonical centromeres. Discussion: Here, we review the characteristics of naturally occurring centromeres and neocentromeres and those of experimentally induced neocentromeres. We also discuss the mechanism of centromere formation and epigenetic regulation of centromere function, which we learned from studying the neocentromeres. Although neocentromeres lack main features of centromeres, such as presence of repetitive ⍺-satellite DNA and pericentric heterochromatin, they behave quite similar to the canonical centromere, indicating the epigenetic nature of the centromere. Still, further investigation will help to understand the formation and maintenance of the centromere, and the correlation to human diseases. Conclusion: Neocentromeres helped us to understand the formation of canonical centromeres. Metallic surface finishes have been used in the anti-biofouling, but it is very difficult to produce surfaces with hierarchically ordered structures. In the present study, anti-biofouling metallic surfaces with nanostructures superimposed on curved micro-riblets were produced via top-down fabrication. According to the attachment theory, these surfaces feature few attachment points for organisms, the nanostructures prevent the attachment of bacteria and algal zoospores, while the micro-riblets prohibit the settlement of macrofoulers. Anodic oxidation was performed to induce superhydrophilicity. It forms a hydration layer on the surface, which physically blocks foulant adsorption along with the anti-biofouling topography. We characterized the surfaces via scanning electron and atomic force microscopy, contact-angle measurement, and wear-resistance testing. The contact angle of the hierarchical structures was less than 1°. Laboratory settlement assays verified that bacterial attachment was dramatically reduced by the nanostructures and/or the hydration layer, attributable to superhydrophilicity. The micro-riblets prohibited the settlement of macrofoulers. Over 77 days of static immersion in the sea during summer, the metallic surface showed significantly less biofouling compared to a surface painted with an anticorrosive coating. Accurate water surface elevation estimation is essential for understanding nearshore processes, but it is still challenging due to limitations in measuring water level using in-situ acoustic sensors. This paper presents a vision-based water surface elevation estimation approach using multi-view datasets. Specifically, we propose a visual domain adaptation method to build a water level estimator in spite of a situation in which ocean wave height cannot be measured directly. We also implemented a semi-supervised approach to extract wave height information from long-term sequences of wave height observations with minimal supervision. We performed wave flume experiments in a hydraulic laboratory with two cameras with side and top viewpoints to validate the effectiveness of our approach. The performance of the proposed models were evaluated by comparing the estimated time series of water elevation with the ground-truth wave gauge data at three locations along the wave flume. The estimated time series were in good agreement within the averaged correlation coefficient of 0.98 and 0.90 on the measurement and 0.95 and 0.85 on the estimation for regular and irregular waves, respectively. Here we demonstrate high-throughput gigapixel confocal imaging using a massively parallel optical probe array with single directional infinite scanning. For implementation of the single directional infinite scan with high lateral resolution, a parallelogram array micro-objective lens module, composed of two wafer-level microlens arrays, is proposed to generate a massively parallel optical probe array for integration into the confocal imaging system, including an objective-side telecentric relay lens with a low-magnification. To test the feasibility of the proposed system with single directional infinite scanning, we designed and constructed a confocal imaging system using a parallelogram array of multi-optical probes with a massively parallel array size of 200 × 140. The constructed system provides a full width-half maximum lateral resolution of 1.55 μm, as measured by the knife-edge detection method, and a field-of-view width of 28.0 mm with a sampling interval of 1 μm/pixel. The functional and optimal expression of genes is crucial for survival of all living organisms. Numerous experiments and efforts have been performed to reveal the mechanisms required for the functional and optimal expression of human genes. The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae has evolved independently of humans for billions of years. Nevertheless, S. cerevisiae has many conserved genes and expression mechanisms that are similar to those in humans. Yeast is the most commonly used model organism for studying the function and expression mechanisms of human genes because it has a relatively simple genome structure, which is easy to manipulate. Many previous studies have focused on understanding the functions and mechanisms of human proteins using orthologous genes and biological systems of yeast. In this review, we mainly introduce two recent studies that replaced human genes and nucleosomes with those of yeast. Here, we suggest that, although yeast is a relatively small eukaryotic cell, its humanization is useful for the direct study of human proteins. The origin of efficiency-lifetime trade-off in triplet–triplet fusion (TTF) type blue fluorescent organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) was investigated and the device structure to resolve the issue was developed. The efficiency and lifetime were simultaneously improved in the blue OLEDs by developing a multilayer hole transport stack which can adjust carrier densities and recombination zone in the emitting layer (EML). It was found that electron leakage from EML and high spatial density of excitons in the vicinity of the electron blocking layer for high TTF rates by narrow recombination zone are the detrimental factors for efficiency-lifetime trade-off. A multilayer hole transport stack employing a deep highest occupied molecular orbital hole transport layer and an electron blocking layer combined with an appropriate hole blocking layer simultaneously improved the power efficiency by 16% at 500 cd/m2 and lifetime by almost 100% (from 73 h up to 145 h). Although polycarbonate (PC) materials are well known to have poor adhesion to other surfaces, few studies have been conducted on the improvement of their adhesive properties via surface chemical functionalization. Herein, we report the enhancement in the adhesion properties of PC by adapting two silane coupling agents, namely (3-glycidoxypropyl) methyldiethoxysilane (GPTMS) and (3-aminopropyl) trimethoxysilane (APTMS), on the surface. We tested the adhesion with an epoxy-based adhesive consisting of bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (BADGE) and trientine (trien). The chemical interaction between the amine groups of the hardener (trien) and the epoxy rings of an epoxy-functionalized PC (PC-GPTMS) sample surface was observed with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. We found that the amine-functionalized PC (PC-APTMS) can also form crosslinked polymeric structures with the BADGE after curing. Compared to the bare PC, an increase in the shear strength of up to 168% and 163% was observed from the PC-GPTMS and PC-APTMS, respectively. In contrast, the ultraviolet-ozone (UVO) and O2 plasma-treated samples showed a negligible increase in adhesion strength. These results strongly suggest that the chemical functionalization of PC substrates with coupling agents significantly enhances the adhesion properties of PCs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A series of M-quinolate complexes were theoretically investigated to understand the effect of metal ions on electronic and charge transport properties by employing density functional theory simulation. It was found that both electronic and carrier transport properties in M-quinolate materials significantly depend on singly oxidized metal ions. In particular, Csq apparently showed an excellent advantage over other M-quinolate materials (M = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Cu, Ag, and Au) in terms of electron mobility and injection. In addition, the dimerization and vertical detachment energies of all M-quinolate materials were compared to understand self-aggregation effect on carrier transport. As a result, it is expected that Csq is not only likely to be present in dimer form, but also reduce the density of electron traps in electron transporting materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A critical structure poised to coordinate chromosome segregation with division plane specification is the central spindle that forms between separating chromosomes after anaphase onset. The central spindle acts as a signalling centre that concentrates proteins essential for division plane specification and contractile ring constriction. However, the molecular mechanisms that control the initial stages of central spindle assembly remain elusive. Using Caenorhabditis elegans zygotes, we found that the microtubule-bundling protein SPD-1PRC1 and the motor ZEN-4MKLP-1 are required for proper central spindle structure during its elongation. In contrast, we found that the kinetochore controls the initiation of central spindle assembly. Specifically, central spindle microtubule assembly is dependent on kinetochore recruitment of the scaffold protein KNL-1, as well as downstream partners BUB-1, HCP-1/2CENP-F and CLS-2CLASP; and is negatively regulated by kinetochore-associated protein phosphatase 1 activity. This in turn promotes central spindle localization of CLS-2CLASP and initial central spindle microtubule assembly through its microtubule polymerase activity. Together, our results reveal an unexpected role for a conserved kinetochore protein network in coupling two critical events of cell division: chromosome segregation and cytokinesis. Capping protein (CP) regulates actin dynamics by binding the barbed ends of actin filaments. Removal of CP may be one means to harness actin polymerization for processes such as cell movement and endocytosis. Here we structurally and biochemically investigated a CP interaction (CPI) motif present in the otherwise unrelated proteins CARMIL and CD2AP. The CPI motif wraps around the stalk of the mushroom-shaped CP at a site distant from the actin-binding interface, which lies on the top of the mushroom cap. We propose that the CPI motif may act as an allosteric modulator, restricting CP to a low-affinity, filament-binding conformation. Structure-based sequence alignments extend the CPI motif–containing family to include CIN85, CKIP-1, CapZIP and a relatively uncharacterized protein, WASHCAP (FAM21). Tibial nerve stimulation (TNS) is one of the neuromodulation methods used to treat an overactive bladder (OAB). However, the treatment mechanism is not accurately understood owing to significant differences in the results obtained from animal and clinical studies. Thus, this study was aimed to confirm the response of bladder activity to the different stimulation frequencies and to observe the duration of prolonged post-stimulation inhibitory effects following TNS. This study used unanesthetized rats to provide a closer approximation of the clinical setting and evaluated the changes in bladder activity in response to 30 min of TNS at different frequencies. Moreover, we observed the long-term changes of post-stimulation inhibitory effects. Our results showed that bladder response was immediately inhibited after 30 min of 10 Hz TNS, whereas it was excited at 50 Hz TNS. We also used the implantable stimulator to observe a change in duration of the prolonged post-stimulation inhibitory effects of the TNS and found large discrepancies in the time that the inhibitory effect lasted after stimulation between individual animals. This study provides important evidence that can be used to understand the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying the bladder inhibitory response induced by TNS as well as the long-lasting prolonged post-stimulation effect.
