Sarcopenia (low muscle mass, i.e., quantity) is associated with poor clinical outcomes in patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). In this study, we aimed to illustrate the clinical prognostic value of myosteatosis (muscle fat infiltration) for short-term mortality in patients with ACLF. We retrospectively enrolled consecutive patients with ACLF between January 2019 and January 2022. Computed tomography-based body composition analysis was performed at the third lumbar vertebral level to determine skeletal muscle radiation attenuation. Fine and Gray’s competing risk regression model, with liver transplantation as a competing risk, was used to assess the factors associated with 90-day mortality. A total of 431 patients with ACLF were included. Myosteatosis and sarcopenia were observed in 261 (60.6%) and 87 (20.2%) patients, respectively. Competitive risk regression showed that age (HR 1.021, 95% CI 1.000–1.043, P = 0.042), APASL ACLF Research Consortium (AARC) score (HR 1.498, 95% CI 1.312–1.710, P < 0.001), and sarcopenia (HR 1.802, 95% CI 1.062–3.060, P = 0.029) were independently associated with increased 90-day mortality. Subgroup analysis of male patients with HBV-ACLF revealed that myosteatosis (HR 2.119, 95% CI 1.101–4.078, P = 0.025) was promising prognostic factors for 90-day mortality after being adjusted for ascites, acute kidney injury, AARC score, and sarcopenia. Myosteatosis is predictive of short-term outcomes in male patients with HBV-ACLF. Our results emphasise the importance of focusing on muscle fat infiltration in patients with HBV-ACLF. The increasing interest in wearable smart healthcare systems has sparked considerable attention toward flexible sensors owing to their high sensitivity and flexibility. However, these sensors still face challenges in terms of performance imbalances and instability. To address these issues, graphene-based conductive materials with exceptional mechanical and electrical properties have been incorporated into flexible sensors. Despite the potential of graphene, a comprehensive understanding of the sensing mechanisms and influence of fabrication methods on the performance of graphene-based flexible sensors is lacking. This article aims to bridge this gap by providing an overview of the latest research progress in flexible graphene sensors. We begin by analyzing the main properties of graphene materials, including tensile strength, specific surface area, thermal conductivity, and electrical conductivity. These properties highlight the superior characteristics of graphene for flexible sensor applications. The sensing mechanisms of strain/pressure, gas, and temperature flexible sensors are reviewed, with a focus on innovations in graphene composites, regular microstructures, and emerging preparation methods that enable an effective balance of the individual properties of a single flexible sensor. Furthermore, the article discusses graphene-based multifunctional flexible sensors that allow for the simultaneous monitoring of multiple stimuli, self-powered performance studies, and wireless communication performance studies. Performance analysis of these sensors in the context of flexible systems is provided. Finally, this article presents a comprehensive summary of flexible graphene sensors and offers an outlook for the future. This work presents a new method for obtaining the precise stationary state solutions of the Generalized Langevin Equation (GLE). The method combines Mori–Zwanzig formalism and diffusion approximation theory to provide an accurate analytical method for exploring the non-Markovian GLE. We demonstrate that the above-mentioned method can capture well the stationary state solutions of the GLE with memory kernel control and provide a valuable tool for studying the anomalous diffusion events. Swine influenza is an economically important respiratory disease in swine, but it also constantly poses a threat to human health. Therefore, developing rapid, sensitive, and efficient detection methods for swine influenza virus (SIV) is important. By aligning the haemagglutinin (HA) gene sequences of SIVs circulating in China over a 10-year period, an H1 primer-probe set targeting both Eurasian avian-like H1N1 (EA H1N1) and pandemic 2009 H1N1 ((H1N1)pdm09) lineages plus a H3 primer-probe set targeting the prevalent human-like H3N2 (HL H3N2) subtype were designed. Subsequently, a TaqMan-MGB-based duplex one-step real-time RT-PCR (RT-qPCR) assay was established and evaluated. The duplex RT-qPCR has a detection limit of 5 copies/μL of HA plasmid for EA H1N1, (H1N1)pdm09, and HL H3N2 subtype SIVs, and its overall detection sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 91.67% matches that of traditional virus isolation through chicken embryo inoculation using experimentally infected mouse lung samples. The method showed high repeatability both within run and between runs, and there was no cross-reactivity against several other porcine viruses that are commonly circulating in China. Furthermore, the duplex RT-qPCR method revealed a higher prevalence of subtype H1 than subtype H3 in 166 nasal swabs from pigs collected from one slaughterhouse between October and December 2019. Trans-differentiation, or activation, of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) is a hallmark event in liver fibrosis although the underlying mechanism is not fully appreciated. Serum response factor (SRF) is a pleiotropic sequence-specific transcription factor with a ubiquitous expression pattern. In the present study, we investigated the effect of HSC-specific ablation of SRF on liver fibrosis in vivo and the underlying mechanism. We report that SRF bound to the promoter regions of pro-fibrogenic genes, including collagen type I (Col1a1/Col1a2) and alpha smooth muscle actin (Acta2), with greater affinity in activated HSCs compared to quiescent HSCs. Ablation of SRF in HSCs in vitro downregulated the expression of fibrogenic genes by dampening the accumulation of active histone marks. SRF also interacted with MRTF-A, a well-documented co-factor involved in liver fibrosis, on the pro-fibrogenic gene promoters during HSC activation. In addition, SRF directly regulated MRTF-A transcription in activated HSCs. More importantly, HSC conditional SRF knockout (CKO) mice developed a less robust pro-fibrogenic response in the liver in response to CCl4 injection and BDL compared to wild-type littermates. In conclusion, our data demonstrate that SRF may play an essential role in HSC activation and liver fibrosis. Drug delivery mediated by hydrogel has shown great promise in controlled drug release field. We report here the development of a hydroxybutyl chitosan (HBC) thermo-sensitive gel to deliver doxorubicine hydrochloride (DOX·HCl) for cancer treatment. Concentrated HBC aqueous solution could transform into hydrogel within 30 s after injection under physiological temperature in non-chemical fashion. The properties of the HBC gels including chemical structure, surface morphology, and rheologic properties were studied. Gelation temperature and gelation time of HBC could be adjusted by HBC concentrations. The gel erosion rate in vivo was faster than solubilization rate in vitro. The mild inflammatory response caused by implantation of the hydrogel was acceptable. The DOX·HCl (1 mg/ml) loaded HBC gels displayed slow release rates that were independent of the HBC concentration, and significantly reduced viability of 4T-1 cells compared with the HBC gels after 1 day incubation. In this study, a folate-modified-chitosan-coated liposome (FCCL) was prepared for tumor-targeted drug delivery. The folate-chitosan conjugates were characterized using H NMR and infrared spectrum analysis. The properties of folate-chitosan-coated liposomes (FCCLs) were studied and compared with those of traditional liposomes and chitosan-coated liposomes (CCLs). FCCLs were spherical in shape with a classic core-shell structure. Compared with conventional liposomes, FCCLs had larger size (average diameter: 182.0 nm), higher zeta potential (10.1 mV), prolonged drug release behaviors (55.76 % after 24 h), and better physical stability when stored at 25 °C, all similar to the properties of CCLs. With fluorescein as a model drug, fluorescein-loaded liposomes, CCLs, and FCCLs were prepared and their tumor targeting ability was evaluated according to the in vitro cellular uptake of fluorescein loaded nanoparticles by MCF-7 and HUVEC cells. Results demonstrated that FCCLs had a significant higher uptake by folate receptor positive cells (MCF-7) as compared to traditional liposomes and CCLs, which indicated that the FCCLs were promising nano-carriers for tumor-targeted drug delivery. Sarcopenia is a well-recognized factor affecting the prognosis of chronic liver disease, but its impact on acute decompensation underlying chronic liver disease is unknown. This study evaluated the impact of sarcopenia on short-term mortality in patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). One hundred and seventy-one ACLF patients who underwent abdominal CT between 2015 and 2019 were retrospectively included in this study. Skeletal muscle index at the third lumbar vertebrae (L3-SMI) was used to diagnose sarcopenia.The ACLF patients in this study had a L3-SMI of 41.2 ± 8.3 cm2/m2 and sarcopenia was present in 95/171 (55.6%) patients. Body mass index (BMI), cirrhosis, and higher serum bilirubin were independently associated with sarcopenia. Following multivariate Cox regression analysis, cirrhosis (hazard ratio (HR) 2.758, 95%CI 1.323–5.750), serum bilirubin (HR 1.049, 95%CI 1.026–1.073), and international normalized ratio (INR) (HR 1.725, 95%CI 1.263–2.355) were associated with 3-month mortality (P < 0.05), whereas L3-SMI and sarcopenia were not. A subgroup analysis of the factors related to sarcopenia showed that sarcopenia was still not predictive of short-term outcome in ACLF patients. To analyze genetic characters of migratory dragonflies, we used 10 microsatellite markers and a partial sequence of the mitochondrial gene Cytb to investigate genetic diversity and demographic history among 19 populations of P. flavescens in eastern the monsoon region of China. In a Bayesian clustering analysis of the microsatellite data, three distinct clades were present, and each population consisted of a mixture of individuals from the three clusters. An AMOVA of the data from both the microsatellite loci and Cytb revealed that genetic variation was mainly within each population. For the 543 individuals from the 19 regions, 77 unique haplotypes were obtained by DnaSP 4.0, and a median-joining network showed no obvious geographical pattern and displayed high gene flow and minimal population genetic structure among the 19 populations. According to a Mantel test, there was no significant association between genetic distance and geographic distribution and no isolation by distance. Mismatch distribution and neutrality tests showed no demographic expansion for the 19 populations. Microsatellite and mitochondrial DNA data suggested there was high gene flow and low differentiation among the populations. We investigate the possibility of optimizing genuine tripartite quantum steering inequalities via machine learning. In particular, we consider two types of hybrid scenarios: one-sided device-independent scenario (where one party is considered to be untrusted) and two-sided device-independent scenario (where two parties are considered to be untrusted). In both scenarios, we apply a method of machine learning, known as artificial neuron networks, to optimize the quantum steering inequalities for the family of noisy Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger states and noisy W states. The results show that the optimized steering classifiers can verify quantum steering well with only a small number of Pauli measurements, which can be easily realized in experiment. Different crystal phases of MnO2 were synthesized and tested for NH3–SCR of NO and NH3 oxidation performances during 50–120 °C. Among those catalysts, α-MnO2 showed the most superior SCR performance for NOx conversion and N2 selectivity, and NH3 species on its surface were active to react with the oxygen, while NH2 species were also easily oxidized by the oxygen. For β-MnO2, NH3 (ads, B) species and part of NH3 (ads, L) species on its surface were active to react with oxygen, while NH3 (ads, L) species adsorbed at Lewis sites showed low reactive with O2, thereby producing less N2O and low NO conversion. γ-MnO2 showed the similar NOx conversion rates and N2O amount generated from the NH3 oxidation comparing to α-MnO2, while yielding much more N2O generation ratios from SCR reactions conditions. Besides, NH3 (ads, L), NH3 (ads, B), NO32− and NH2 species adsorbed on γ-MnO2 surface had high reactivity and could all be consumed by oxygen rapidly. And the N2O formation of δ-MnO2 mainly generated from SCR reactions conditions in the temperature range of 50–120 °C, while the adsorbed NH3 (ads, L) species were hard to react with O2. The effectiveness of arthroscopic repair of type II superior labrum anterior–posterior lesion (SLAP) was unclear as previous studies examined this treatment with patients of combined types of SLAP lesions. To address this research gap, we evaluated the clinical and functional outcomes of arthroscopic repair for 16 patients (mean = 24.2, SD = 6.5) with clinical evidence of isolated type II SLAP lesion. After having arthroscopic stabilizations with Bioknotless suture anchors (Mitek), the patients were offered post-operative rehabilitation programs (e.g., physiotherapy) for 6 months. The symptoms of SLAP lesion and the functions of the shoulder were assessed pre-operatively and 28-month post-operatively by O’Brien test, Speed test, Yergason test, and University of California at Los Angeles rating for pain and function of the shoulder. Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test and McNemar test were employed to analyze the difference between assessment in pre-operation and post-operation phases. The result showed that patients’ shoulder functions improved (UCLA Shoulder Score), and symptoms of SLAP lesion reduced (O’Brien test, Speed test, and Yergason test) significantly ( P < 0.05). Time for returning to play with pre-injury level was in average 9.4 months (range 4–24), and no complication or recurrence was detected. We concluded that arthroscopic repair is an effective operation of type II SLAP lesion with good clinical and functional outcomes; however, athletes with high demand of overhead throwing activities are likely to take longer duration of rehabilitation to attain full recovery. Acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) is a dynamic syndrome, and sequential assessments can reflect its prognosis more accurately. Our aim was to build and validate a new scoring system to predict short-term prognosis using baseline and dynamic data in ACLF. We conducted a retrospective cohort analysis of patients with ACLF from three different hospitals in China. To construct the model, we analyzed a training set of 541 patients from two hospitals. The model's performance was evaluated in a validation set of 130 patients from another center. In the training set, multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that age, WGO type, basic etiology, total bilirubin, creatinine, prothrombin activity, and hepatic encephalopathy stage were all independent prognostic factors in ACLF. We designed a dynamic trend score table based on the changing trends of these indicators. Furthermore, a logistic prediction model (DP-ACLF) was constructed by combining the sum of dynamic trend scores and baseline prognostic parameters. All prognostic scores were calculated based on the clinical data of patients at the third day, first week, and second week after admission, respectively, and were correlated with the 90-day prognosis by ROC analysis. Comparative analysis showed that the AUC value for DP-ACLF was higher than for other prognostic scores, including Child–Turcotte–Pugh, MELD, MELD-Na, CLIF-SOFA, CLIF-C ACLF, and COSSH-ACLF. The new scoring model, which combined baseline characteristics and dynamic changes in clinical indicators to predict the course of ACLF, showed a better prognostic ability than current scoring systems. The new-type electrolysis-integrated ecological floating beds (EEFBs) were set up to study their water removal ability due to the excellent water treatment capacity of electrolysis, this enhanced EEFBs were made of polyethylene filled with biochar substrate and in middle of the substrate placed the Mg-Al alloy served as anode and graphite served as cathode. The results show that removal rates of total nitrogen (TN), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), total phosphorus (TP) and phosphate (PO43−-P) by the EEFBs increased 53.1%, 96.5%, 76.5% and 74.5%, respectively. The electrolysis reaction was the main pathway for TN and TP removals in the EEFBs. A higher concentration of hydrogen autotrophic denitrification bacteria was recorded in the substrate of the EEFBs than that in the traditional ecological floating beds (EFBs) (p < 0.05), suggesting that the electrolysis may have enhanced the NO3−-N removal efficiency of the EEFBs by promoting the growth and reproduce of hydrogen autotrophic denitrification bacteria. The in-situ formation of Mg2+ and Al3+ ions from a sacrificial Mg-Al alloy anode, caused PO43−-P and other suspended matter flocculation, improved phosphorus removal and simultaneously reduced turbidity. Many insects such as the crop pest Agrotis ipsilon (black cutworm) migrate seasonally to exploit suitable breeding and winter habitats. The migration of a crop pest also increases the risk of sudden outbreaks. Knowledge about insect migration thus is important for developing a forecasting and warning system for migratory pests. Here we used directional flight devices to study the orientation behavior of A. ipsilon in China during the northward and southward migratory periods and showed that the insects during each period exhibited a common cardinal orientation. Northward migratory moths were oriented at an orientation angle mean of 24.4° and the southward at 205.17°. Expression levels of cryptochrome and magnetoreceptor genes in migratory populations were higher than in a reared population and higher in the southward migratory population than in the northward. These findings provide a physiological and molecular basis for further study of the migratory behavior of the black cutworm and potential control of this pest. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Different amounts of Mn and Ce oxides were loaded onto nitric acid-modified activated carbon (ACN) by wet impregnation. The series of catalysts were employed for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx by NH3 at temperatures between 100 and 250 °C. Cerium-modified catalysts exhibited higher de-NOx performance than those modified with Mn/ACN, even with the same total loadings. The precursor solution with a molar ratio for Ce/(Mn + Ce) of 0.4 exhibited the highest catalytic activity. Enhanced resistance to SO2 and H2O and better stability were observed for 10%Mn–Ce(0.4)/ACN relative to 10%Mn/ACN. The catalysts were further characterized by N2 physisorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), and temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (NH3-TPD). The N2 physisorption and XRD results suggested that co-doping Ce with Mn increased the surface area and promoted the dispersion of Mn–Ce binary metal oxides. H2-TPR the NH3-TPD results demonstrated that the interaction between manganese oxide and cerium oxide species enhanced the redox and surface acidity of 10%Mn–Ce(0.4)/ACN. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Odorant receptors are thought to play critical roles in the perception of chemosensory stimuli by insects. The primary method to address the functions of odorant receptors in insects is to use in vitro binding assays between the receptors and potential chemical stimuli. We injected MmedOrco dsRNA into the abdominal cavity of a braconid wasp, Microplitis mediator, and assayed for expression of this gene 72 h after treatment (RNAi). Quantitative real-time PCR demonstrated that the level of mRNA expression in MmedOrco dsRNA-treated M. mediator was significantly reduced (>90%) when compared with water-treated controls. Furthermore, electroantennogram (EAG) responses of M. mediator to two chemical attractants, nonanal and farnesene, were also reduced significantly (~70%) in RNAi-treated M. mediator when compared to controls. RNAi-treated M. mediator also responded by walking/flying at a lower rate to both chemicals when compared with controls in a Y-tube olfactometer bioassay, which provides direct evidence that MmedOrco plays an important role in perception of nonanal and farnesene in M. mediator.
