Carbon monoxide (CO) detection and monitoring are necessary to prevent problems to human health. Therefore, the density functional theory was employed to examine the CO adsorption on metal clusters deposited on pristine and modified (defective and doped) graphene. First, the stability of Cu4 and Ni4 clusters deposited on pristine and modified graphene was determined. Then, the CO adsorption on metal clusters deposited on pristine and modified graphene was investigated. The interaction energies of the metal clusters deposited on modified graphene are higher than those supported on pristine graphene, which suggests that modified graphene materials are better support materials for these clusters. The metal clusters supported on graphene-based materials exhibit a good sensitivity toward the CO molecule. Therefore, these studied composites can be good candidates for CO detection. Cadmium telluride plus cadmium tellurite (CdTe + CdTeO3) nanocomposite films were grown by radio frequency magnetron sputtering at room temperature. The CdTe + CdTeO3 samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy, UV–Vis absorption, and room temperature photoluminescence (RTPL). XRD and TEM results indicate that films are composed of CdTe and CdTeO3 nanoparticles (NP's) with 6.7 ± 0.8 nm and 6 ± 1 nm in size, respectively. CdTe NPs grew in hexagonal wurtzite and cubic zinc blende crystalline phases. CdTeO3 NPs are crystalized in cubic phase. Direct bandgap (Eg) (first discrete electronic transition) calculation indicates Eg = 2.6 ± 0.2 eV for CdTe and 3.3 ± 0.2 eV for CdTeO3. RTPL spectrum evidences a wide signal in the 2.0 to 3.25 eV interval. Results reveal that the emission band maximum, which is centered in the blue region of the visible light, is related with band-to-band transitions in CdTe NPs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cats (Felis silvestris catus) are one of the most pernicious invasive species on islands, being responsible for the decline and extinction of many vertebrate taxa. Eradications programs are a powerful tool to fight against cat impacts on islands, but their implementation requires planning and design to prevent failure. In that sense, gathering data on cat habitat use, abundance and trophic interactions provides key information to effectively design management actions. The present contribution presents a simple resource-efficient methodology using cat feces to assess cat distribution, density and trophic ecology on an inhabited islet. This information is essential in order to effectively organize trapping efforts and minimize subsequent impacts of other species if a control or eradication campaign is undertaken. Additionally, our research effort evaluated the potential influence of coastal and anthropic resources on cat diet, which can also provide useful information for planning aside management actions. Cat distribution on our model islet, La Graciosa, was 'clumped', presenting higher densities in anthropic areas (villages and farms). The invasive house mouse and the European rabbit were the main prey items, although native invertebrates, reptiles and birds were also consumed. Cats on La Graciosa ingested a large quantity of garbage, which was negatively correlated with distance from human settlements. Considering the low time and resource requirements of this methodology, and the useful basic ecological information it provides, it can be employed to make optimal management planning decisions for small inhabited islands where cat control or eradication programs are being considered. In the last decades there have been introduced different concepts of stability for projective varieties. In this paper we give a natural and intrinsic criterion for the Chow and Hilbert stability for complex irreducible smooth projective curves $$C\subset {\mathbb {P}} ^n$$ . Namely, if the restriction of the tangent bundle of $${\mathbb {P}} ^n$$ to C is stable then $$C\subset {\mathbb {P}} ^n$$ is Chow stable, and hence Hilbert stable. We apply this criterion to describe a smooth open set of a regular component of the locus of Chow stable curves of the Hilbert scheme of $$\mathbb {P} ^n$$ with Hilbert polynomial $$P(t)=dt+(1-g)$$ , when $$g\ge 4$$ and $$d>g+n-\left\lfloor \frac{g}{n+1}\right\rfloor .$$ Moreover, we describe the quotient stack of such curves. The spectral handoff is important in cognitive wireless networks to ensure an adequate quality of service and performance for secondary user communications. This work presents a multivariable algorithm for dynamic channel selection used in cognitive wireless networks. The channel selection is based on the fuzzy analytical hierarchical process (FAHP) method. The selected criteria for choosing the best backup channel are probability of channel availability, estimated channel time availability, signal to noise plus interference ratio, and bandwidth. These criteria are determined by means of a customized Delphi Method and using the FAHP technique; the corresponding weight and significance is calculated for two applications classified as best effort (BE) and real time (RT). The insertion of the fuzzy logic in the AHP algorithm allows better handling of inaccurate information because, as shown the results, consider more options to evaluate in contrast to a conventional AHP. As a difference with related work, the performance of our proposed FAHP method was validated with captured data in experiments realized at the GSM frequency band (824-849 MHz). This is due to the challenge of finding white spaces to communicate in this frequency band. This band represents more disputes in accessing spectral opportunities than other radio frequency (RF) bands because of the high demand for mobile phone communications. The proposed FAHP algorithm has a practical computational complexity and provides an effective frequency-channel selection. This proposed FAHP algorithm presents a new methodology to select and classify the variables based on a modified version of the Delphi method. CdTe nanocrystals were grown on eroded Si (111) substrates at room temperature by pulsed laser ablation. Before growth, Si substrates were subjected to different erosion time in order to investigate the effect on the CdTe samples. The erosion process consists of exposition to a pulsed high-voltage electric arc. The surface consequence of the erosion process consists of Si nanoparticles which acted as a template for the growth of CdTe nanocrystals. CdTe samples were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), room temperature photoluminescence (RT PL) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). CdTe nanocrystals grew in the stable cubic phase, according to XRD spectra. A strong visible emission was detected in photoluminescence (PL) experiments. The PL signal was centered at 540 nm (~2.34 eV). With the effective mass approximation, the size of the CdTe crystals was estimated around 3.5 nm. HRTEM images corroborated the physical characteristics of CdTe nanocrystals. These results could be useful for the development of CdTe optoelectronic devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High deforestation rates in tropical countries continue to reduce forest cover and thereby habitat quantity and quality. However, in some places the forest is recovering and expanding thus offsetting the biodiversity and ecosystem service losses. In order to characterize the forest recovery, land use and land cover (LUC) changes were analyzed using aerial photographs, taken between 1952 and 2009, of a peri-urban watershed in the Andes region of Venezuela. The qualities of the changes were assessed using landscape indices and hemeroby indicators. In that period, the forest cover increased about 18 %, mainly due to abandoned pastures on steep slopes. At the same time, the urban area expanded about 4 % on valley bottoms, while pastures and crop fields were reduced about 20 %. The results also showed that forest patches were aggregating, whereas pastures were fragmenting. A reduction in direct human impacts on forests growing on abandoned pastures resulted in a slight recovery of the lower montane cloud forest structure and plant composition. But non-native species were found in all LUC categories. During the study period, we documented not only forest recovery, but also urban area growth, intensified land use and invasions by non-native species all of which could partially counterbalance the positives of forest recovery. In this study, a TRIP-800 steel was welded using a Laser CO process, and the resultant microstructures were characterized by optical, scanning, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) means. It was found that the microstructure of the steel in the as-received condition consisted of ferrite, bainite, and retained austenite (RA), including some martensite. In particular, TEM observations indicated that the developed martensites were high carbon twinned martensites. It was found that laser beam welding (LBW) promoted the development of up to 23% martensite in the fusion zone (FZ) and up to 30% in the heat-affected zone (HAZ). In addition, determinations of RA using x-ray diffraction indicated that the amount of RA developed in the FZ was relatively small (<6%). Confirmation for the relatively large amounts of martensite in both the FZ and HAZ was indirectly made by the shape of microhardness profiles, which resembled a 'top hat.' Tensile testing in welded strips indicated a loss of strength and ductility. An examination of the fracture surfaces indicated that the steel fractured in a brittle fashion at the HAZ-BM interface. Apparently, the development of relatively large amounts of martensite in the HAZ reduced the steel toughness. In turn, this indicated that LBW leads to martensite embrittlement in the HAZ regions, but not at the parting line of the FZ. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present work gives a detailed analysis into one of the most important quality parameters in cast iron, namely the eutectic cells or nodule count. The analysis is based on theoretical fundamentals of cast iron solidification. Expressions are derived and used to relate either the number of cells or the nodule count to factors of technological importance. It is found that such factors are intrinsically related to the chill tendency, pre-shrinkage expansion, shrinkage porosity, shrinkage depression and graphite type. Also, it is shown that the resultant mechanical properties of cast iron are strongly influenced by the foundry practice. In particular, it is established that the eutectic cell density or the nodule count is a quality factor reflecting the physical-chemical state of the liquid cast iron at a given cooling rate. In turn, this determines the graphite nucleation potential of cast iron which can be used to incorporate all of the technological factors associated with melt preparation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The geometrical structure, atomic ordering, electronic and magnetic properties of closed shell Con PdN-n for n=0, 1, ...,N, and N=3, 5, 7 and 13, have been studied. The whole set of values for N and n, as well as most of the isomers were analyzed. The electronic, magnetic, and structural characteristics were calculated within the density functional theory by means of the SIESTA code using the generalized gradient approximation of Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof for the exchange and correlation potential. The lowest energy geometries obtained were the triangle, hexahedron, decahedron, and icosahedron. We also performed calculations assuming noncollinear magnetic moment arrangements, but the lowest energy configurations correspond to the collinear geometry. We present preliminary results obtained from integral-field (IFU) data of the giant extragalactic H ii region NGC5461, located in a spiral arm (RA=14h03m41.4s, dec=+54°19′05″) of M101. The latitudinal extension of southern South America imposes a thermal gradient that affects the structure of marine and freshwater fish assemblages and the biology of the species through direct exposure to the temperature gradients or by means of a web of historical and ecological relationships. We have reviewed biological and ecological data of marine and freshwater fishes from the southern Neotropics, including Patagonia, and report several examples of dependence on temperature, from glacial times to today’s climate change. We were able to identify historic and present effects on the diversity of fish assemblages, isolation, southern limits for the distribution of species, and morphological variation among populations. There is a wide range of characteristics that exemplify an adaptation to low temperatures, including biochemical peculiarities, physiological adjustments, and alternative life history patterns, and these appear in both freshwater and marine, and native and exotic fishes. The consequences of stable temperature regimes in both the ocean and thermal streams deserve special mention as these shape specialists under conditions of low selective pressure. At present, habitat use and interactions among species are being subject to changes as consequences of water temperature, and some of these are already evident in the northern and southern hemispheres. Electron transport becomes (quasi-) ballistic for nanoscale devices with active regions smaller than 20 nm. Under these conditions, the current and the noise are mainly determined by the electron injection process. Thus, the numerical simulation of these small devices can be very sensible to the boundary conditions (BC). In this work, we present a novel BC for (time-dependent) particle simulators that fulfill Fermi statistics and charge neutrality at the contacts. We present a study of the decomposition of the conduction band (CB) eigenstates in terms of the Brillouin zone center solutions. The methods we use for the decomposition are, ranging from more empirical to more first-principle, a 40-band tight binding model, the empirical pseudopotential method and a quasiparticle self-consistent GW (QPscGW). We observe that on the order of 20 bands are needed to obtain a good description of the CB in the full zone. We extract univocally from those calculations the interband momentum matrix elements, useful for k· p models. Therefore, we can construct Hamiltonians that reproduce the correct components of the CB eigenstates, which is needed for the calculation of optical properties and spin dynamics, to name a few. In this work, a model is proposed for heterogeneous nucleation on substrates whose size distribution can be described by the Weibull statistics. It is found that the nuclei density, N[subnuc] can be given in terms of the maximum undercooling, ΔT[subm] by N[subnuc] = N[subs], exp (-b/ΔT[subm]), where N[subs] is the density of nucleation sites in the melt and b is the nucleation coefficient (b > 0). When nucleation occurs on all possible substrates, the graphite nodule density, Ne[subv,n], or eutectic cell density, N[subv], after solidification equals N[subs]. In this work, measurements of N[subv,n] and N[subv] values were carried out on experimental nodular and flake graphite iron castings processed under various inoculation conditions. The volumetric nodule N[subv,n] or graphite eutectic cell N[subv] count was estimated froni the area nodule count, N[subA,n], or eutectic cell count, N[subA], on polished cast iron surface sections by stereological means. In addition, maximum undercoolings, ΔT[subm], were measured using thermal analysis. The experimental outcome indicates that the N[subV,n] or N[subV], count can be properly described by the proposed expression N[subV,n]=, N[subV], = N[subs] exp (-b/ΔT[subm]). Moreover, the N[subs] and b values were experimentally deterniined. In particular, the proposed model suggests that the size distribution of nucleation sites is exponential in nature. In this work, CoCr-Mo compacted powders were sintered at 900 °C to 1300 °C for 1 to 2 hours and conditions for total carbide dissolution in fcc cobalt were determined. Accordingly, it was found that sintering at temperatures between 900 °C to 1100 °C led to removal of the dendritic structure and to carbide precipitation at the grain boundaries (gbs), as well as in the bulk. Moreover, recrystallization and grain growth were always found to occur during powder sintering. At temperatures above 1100 °C, no carbide precipitation occurred indicating that carbides were not stable at these temperatures. Hence, compact powders were annealed at 1150 °C to promote the development of a single-phase fcc solid solution. This was followed by rapid cooling to room temperature and then aging at 800 °C for 0 to 18 hours. Rapid cooling from 1150 °C promoted the development of up to 64 pet athermal ε-martensite through the face-centered cubic (fcc) →, hexagonal crystal structure (hop) martensitic transformation. The athermal martensite was associated with the development of a network of parallel arrays of fine straight transgranular markings within the fcc matrix. Moreover, aging at 800 °C for 15 hours led to the development of 100 pct isothermal hcp ε-martensite. From the experimental outcome. it is evident that isothermal ε-martensite is the most stable form of the hcp Co phase. Apparently, during aging at 800 °C. the excess defects expected in athermal martensite are removed by thermally activated processes and by the development of isothermal ε-martensite, which has the appearance of "pearlite." Data on pollen and pistil traits from 14 Argentinean Nyctaginaceae species with starch or lipids as pollen reserves are presented. We expect differences in the traits between these two groups of species, but the same pattern within each group for (a) the relationship between pollen size and pistil length assuming that pollen tube length is predetermined by provisions in the pollen independently of the pollen reserve type, and for (b) a trade-off between size and number because available resources for male function are not unlimited. In particular we expect that (a) species with longer pistils will have larger pollen grains, (b) pollen grain size and the number of pollen grains per flower will be negatively correlated. Significant differences in the mean pollen number per flower and mean pollen size were observed between species with different pollen reserve type but not for pistil length. Then, correlation analyses were performed for species with starchy pollen or with pollen with lipids separately. Pollen size - pistil length correlation was positive and significant for species with starchy pollen but not for species with pollen with lipids. On the other hand, pollen size - number correlation was not significant for both starchy and oil-rich species. Results suggest that pollen reserve type would be a relevant factor that constraint pollen size in species of Nyctaginaceae, and that this pollen trait should be considered when studying pollen-pistil relationships, mainly between species of those families with mixed pollen reserves. In Part 1 of this work, an analytical model was derived based on the theory for the transition from gray to white cast iron during solidification. Accordingly, in this part of the work, analytical expressions were found that can be related to the chill width in wedge-shaped castings (or the critical pin diameter and critical wall thickness below which the chill is expected) with temperature parameters that are commonly measured by thermal analysis. Among these parameters are ΔTc = Tm - Tc and ΔTsc = Ts - Tc, where Tm is the minimal solidification temperature for graphite eutectic, Tc is the transformation temperature for cementite eutectic, and Ts is the equilibrium solidification temperature for graphite eutectic. In particular, it was found that the analytical model agrees well with the experimentally measured temperatures. Measured values from thermal analysis for the excess-temperature range (ΔTc) and of the ΔTc/ΔTsc. ratios were found to be in good agreement with the theoretical predictions for the chill of cast iron. In addition, it was found that the predictions from the proposed analytical expressions are similar to those obtained from statistical analyses of the experimental outcome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, an experimental verification for the transition theory from gray to white cast iron solidification is presented. Experimental tests have been implemented using plate- and wedge-shaped castings of various sizes. The experiments included inoculated and noninoculated cast irons of different chemical compositions and time-temperature histories of the inoculation effects. In addition, thermal-analysis tests were employed to determine the degree of undercooling of graphite eutectic (ΔTm). This included microstructural evaluations in order to establish the eutectic-cell densities. This procedure enabled the calculation of the theoretical chill width (w), as well as the chilling tendency (CT) of cast iron. It was found that the predictions of the theoretical analysis are in good agreement with the experimental outcome for the chill exhibited in wedge- and plate-shaped castings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present work is based on a heat balance during the solidification of cast iron. Accordingly, an analytical expression was derived to relate the chilling tendency (CT) of cast iron to nucleation and growth processes associated with the eutectic graphite and cementite constituents. A relationship is found between the CT and factors such as the physicochemical state of liquid, the distribution of nucleation sites, and the density of nucleation sites for eutectic cells. In particular, it is found that the CT can be related to the critical casting modulus (Mcr), enabling determinations of minimum wall thickness for chilled castings or chill widths in wedge-shaped castings. Finally, the present work provides a rational for the effect of technological factors such as the chemistry of the melt, inoculation practice, holding temperature, and time on the resultant CT and chill of the cast iron. Mechanical alloying (MA) was employed to process high nitrogen nanostructural stainless steel from Fe-18 pct Cr-11 pct Mn powder mixtures. Two MA processing units were employed, a Szegvary attritor and a high energy Spex mill, with stainless steel balls under a nitrogen atmosphere. The level of nitrogen introduced by these means was relatively high (around 5 pct), which easily exceeded the equilibrium solubility limits in either the α or γ phase. The relatively high nitrogen concentration in solid solution was attributed to preferential accommodation at dislocation elastic stress fields, as well as at nanograin boundaries. Moreover, it was found that MA in the attritor produced a maximum of 29.4 pct austenite after 72 hours of milling time. In contrast, almost 100 pct austenite was obtained by MA for 120 hours in the Spex mill. The development of a fully austenitic structure was attributed to the high energy associated with the Spex mill during the MA of these powders. Apparently, under these conditions, the interfacial energy contributions associated with the nanograin structure thermodynamically favor the formation of the 7 phase below a critical nanograin size. The resultant grain structure obtained from both MA processes was nanometric with grain sizes well below 10 nm. In the MA powder mixtures processed in the attritor, the powders were subsequently annealed to promote the α → γ transformation. In this case, it was found that almost 100 pct austenite was produced by annealing at 1000 °C to 1100 °C for 60 minutes in MA powder mixtures processed for 72 hours. Longer MA processing times gave rise to the development of either the CrN or Cr2N phase upon annealing. Alternatively, using spark plasma sintering at 800 °C and 1000 °C for 7 minutes led to almost full densification with maximum amounts of austenite of the order of 95 pct. This article focuses on a study that was conducted to analyze the influence of pH and industrial activity on total zinc concentrations in agricultural soils, sewage sludge and beach sands. Samples for the present study were directly obtained from Motril, Spain. Mean total zinc concentrations determined in the three groups of samples considered were significantly different among them, particularly zinc levels measured in sewage sludge and agricultural soils were statistically higher than those found in sands. This finding indicates the influence of the geological characteristics of soil in the total content in zinc. It was also found that the pH values of agricultural soils located in the non-industrialized area were significantly higher. This finding shows a slow and progressive acidification of soils included in the industrialized area.

We analyze the error of a fictitious-domain method with boundary Lagrange multiplier. It is applied to solve a non-homogeneous steady incompressible Navier-Stokes problem in a domain with a multiply-connected boundary. In this work the oxidation kinetics of a porous (21.5% porosity) nitride bonded silicon carbide containing 20% SiC was investigated in the temperature range of 1100–1400 °C. Two oxidation stages were found which corresponded to (i) a rapid parabolic oxidation rate during short term oxidation exposure (0–10 hours), and (ii) a parabolic scale growth after some exposure time. During short term oxidation a continuous oxide film developed, but it was unable to block internal oxidation at the pore channels. An experimental activation energy of 55 kJ/mol was obtained which was attributed to intially rapid external and internal oxidation through the open pore network. After 1–10 hours depending on the actual temperature, closure of the surface pores through oxidation lead to a transition where a continuous SiO2 scale grew on the outer sample surface through diffusion. An activation energy of 132 kJ/mol was associated with this parabolic growth suggesting that inward oxygen diffusion through the SiO2 scale was rate limiting. Metallographic observations indicated severe cracking of the scale developed. This was attributed to the relatively large shrinkage (≈1%) associated with the β–α cristobalite transformation occurring at temperatures below 250 °C. Moreover, X-ray diffraction indicated the presence of cristobalite and tridymite, but it was unable to identify a discontinuous phase developed beneath the SiO2 scale during oxidation. In this paper, we report and discuss the adsorption isotherms of hydro-organic mixtures and of compounds used as mobile phase in reversed phase and normal phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC and NP-HPLC, respectively). This work is the first attempt to study the solid-liquid interface between two types of chromatographic silica surfaces and pure organic adsorbates from water and from organic eluents by HPLC. Frequently, among the dynamic techniques the method of choice for the measurement of an adsorption isotherm is frontal analysis. We suggest here the combination of the technique based on peak asymmetry calibration and peak profiles, which allows calculations directly from integration data. The group of systems studied permits the analysis of the intermolecular interactions on the silica surface. Background: Wars, in addition to causing death and destruction, have a negative impact on mental health, especially on perinatal women. The literature has identified psychological trauma as one of the most prevalent mental health issues associated with wars, but few studies have summarized how to assess, prevent, or treat this problem in perinatal women. To address this gap, the purpose of this study is to provide a narrative review of the current state of assessment, prevention, and treatment interventions of trauma among perinatal women living in war conditions or displaced as a result of a war.A literature search was performed in different research databases (e.g., Medline, PsycInfo). The search terms include a combination of trauma and stressor-related disorders and focused on diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.Most of the results were related to post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) more than acute stress disorder, although there are not many assessments, and interventions (prevention or treatment) dedicated specifically to perinatal women affected by war conditions.Research in this area is still scarce. Recommendations for evidence-based practices in assessment and prevention and treatment interventions and future directions in research and clinical practice are provided.• The literature on trauma in perinatal women is sparse, and especially among perinatal women living in conditions of war.• This paper presents a narrative review of evidence-based assessment and treatment for perinatal women victims of war who experience trauma.Method: Wars, in addition to causing death and destruction, have a negative impact on mental health, especially on perinatal women. The literature has identified psychological trauma as one of the most prevalent mental health issues associated with wars, but few studies have summarized how to assess, prevent, or treat this problem in perinatal women. To address this gap, the purpose of this study is to provide a narrative review of the current state of assessment, prevention, and treatment interventions of trauma among perinatal women living in war conditions or displaced as a result of a war.A literature search was performed in different research databases (e.g., Medline, PsycInfo).
