Currently, the debate about the nature of the human mind is taking new directions through the development of several studies in the field of neuroscience which investigates the location of brain functions. These studies have contributed to a better understanding of the neural substrates of mental functions and the etiology of various mental disorders. However, the knowledge developed by neuroscience did not occur abruptly. Indeed, the study of mind-brain relationship is not new. From pre-history to the present days, various different types of inquiries have been made about the possible materiality and location of human mental functions. This paper presents, in a historic manner, how prehistoric populations as well as early civilizations located in Egypt, Mesopotamia, India, and China developed and employed concepts related to the soul, the mind and the human brain. In face recognition tasks, adults and children have difficulty recognizing faces from other races. This effect is known as the Other Race Effect (ORE) and has been consistently replicated in several studies. The aim of this paper is to present a review of some theoretical models that explain the ORE, its emergence and development. Face coding mechanisms based on Prototypes and Exemplars are the basis for the explanation of differences in coding between the same race and other race faces. It was presented a review of recent research on ORE and how the experiences with other race faces during early childhood infl uences the effect. Finally, further research on the cultural context has been proposed to better investigate the development of ORE and face coding mechanisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Short-term memory is a dynamic psychological process that operates within a network in which non-verbal intelligence and attentional domains are connected. However, no consensus has been reached about which process has the greatest effect on this memory ability, which was the main objective of the present study. A sample of 1448 Brazilian participants (mean age = 26.62 years, standard deviation = 9.97 years; 53.9% females) were collectively tested on pen-and-paper standardized and validated measures of selective (ROTAS-C), alternating (ROTAS-A), and divided (ROTAS-D) attention. They also performed the R1 Non-verbal Intelligence Test and a visual short-term memory test (Memória Visual de Curto Prazo [MEMORE] test). The statistical analyses consisted of a data mining procedure, in which exhaustive automatic selection screening was performed. The results were compared with Corrected Akaike Information Criteria. The linear model met the classic assumptions of ordinary least squares and only included main effects of selective attention (standardized β = 0.39) and non-verbal intelligence (standardized β = 0.37) as main predictors (F2,39 = 7.01, p < 0.01, adjusted R2 = 24%). The Brazilian State-Trait Anxiety Inventory has been widely used to measure state (STAI-S) and trait (STAI-T) components of anxiety. The present work developed and evaluated a short version of the STAI-S and STAI-T in a large sample of Brazilian subjects. The first study selected short-form scales. The second one employed factor analyses to investigate whether each of the two short-form scales presented a well-defined and balanced structure with both anxiety-present and anxiety-absent factors. Results indicated that the STAI-S and STAI-T could be reduced to six items (STAI-S-6 and STAI-T-6, respectively) without sacrificing their psychometric properties. The findings suggest that STAI-S-6 and STAI-T-6 may be employed in situations where time restraints make the use of full-length forms unfeasible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anxiety sensitivity (i.e., fear of arousal-related bodily sensations, including sensations that arise from normal physiological processes, due to the personal belief that these sensations will produce harmful consequences) is an important psychological construct involved in the etiology and maintenance of different anxiety disorders. The present study evaluated the psychometric proprieties and the factor structure of the 18-item Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3 (ASI-3) among 585 Brazilian patients with primary anxiety disorder diagnosis. Results indicated good internal consistency and item-total correlation coefficients. Exploratory factor analyses suggested a hierarchical structure composed of a single higher-order factor and three lower-order factors related to physical, cognitive and social concern. ASI-3 score comparisons across the different anxiety disorder groups indicated that panic disorder patients produced significantly higher overall ASI-3 scores as well as on the physical and social subscales. In bipolar disorder, levels of insight vary as a function of the mood state and appear to influence pharmacology compliance, quality of life, the presence of suicidal ideations, and aggressive behavior. To establish a comparison among different mood states in bipolar with regard to level of insight. Forty-eight patients were evaluated in different affective states (i.e., euthymia, mania, depression, and mixed state). Identifying information, sociodemographic data, and clinical records were recorded. The following scales were applied: Hamilton Depression Scale, Young Mania Rating Scale, Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale positive symptoms subscale, and Global Assessment of Functioning and Clinical Global Impressions Scale for use in bipolar disorder. Insight was evaluated using items 11 and 17 of the Young Mania Rating Scale and Hamilton Depression Scale, respectively. Insight in bipolar disorder was found to be more compromised during manic phases and mixed episodes than during periods of depression or euthymia. The factors associated with lower levels of insight were the following: shorter illness duration, older age, and greater severity in mania; the female gender and older age in depression; and shorter illness duration and more severe depressive symptoms in mixed episodes. In the same individual, levels of insight vary as a function of the affective state over the course of bipolar disorder and appear to be influenced by several clinical variables. The present study examined the effects of a Working Memory Training (WMT) in healthy elderly. Twenty participants comprised the final sample, eleven from the experimental group (WMT) and nine from the control group (socialization). Every subject underwent a neuropsychological evaluation pre and postintervention. The meetings were held once a week, for three months. Results indicated that subjects in the experimental group improved cognitive functions related to concentrated attention, learning, short-term and episodic memory. Subjects in the control group also demonstrated, in a smaller number of variables, improvement in concentrated attention and episodic memory. WMT seems to have generated a transfer effect, especially to episodic memory, which is directly related to the subsystem of working memory (WM), suggesting that WMT may be useful in the context of the neuropsychology of aging. It is well known that 5-HT2 mechanisms modulate the defensive behavior produced by the stimulation of the dorsal periaqueductal gray (dPAG). However, in spite of the notion that past stressful experiences play a role in certain types of anxiety, only studies with the stimulation of the dPAG of rats without previous aversive experience have been conducted so far. We investigated the mediation of 5-HT2 receptors of the dPAG in rats previously submitted to contextual fear conditioning (CFC). Defensive behaviors induced by the activation of the dPAG were assessed by measuring the lowest intensity of electric current applied to this structure (threshold) able to produce freezing and escape responses during the testing sessions of CFC in which animals were placed in a context previously paired to footshocks. The 5-HT2 function of the dPAG in this condition was evaluated by local injections of α-methyl-5-HT (20 nmol/0.2 μl) and ketanserin (5 and 10 nmol/0.2 μl), selective agonist and antagonist of 5-HT2 receptors, respectively. In accordance with previous studies, α-methyl-5-HT increased the aversive thresholds (antiaversive effects) in naive rats, and injection of ketanserin into the dPAG did not produce significant effects. On the other hand, ketanserin decreased in a dose-dependent manner the freezing threshold (proaversive effect) determined by the dPAG electrical stimulation, whereas α-methyl-5-HT continued to show antiaversive effects in animals under CFC. The present results suggest that past stressful experience can produce changes in the synaptic function of 5-HT2 receptors within the dPAG with important impact on the expression of defensive behaviors. Rationale: Although 5-HT2 receptors seem to play an important role in anxiety, results from numerous studies are still highly variable. Moreover, little is known about the behavioral effects of centrally administered 5-HT2 compounds in animal models of anxiety. Objective: The current study was performed to: (1) further investigate the effects of 5-HT2 receptor activation in rats exposed to the elevated plus-maze (EPM) and the open-field arena, two widely used animal models for studying anxiety and locomotor activity; and (2) evaluate the involvement of the 5-HT2 receptors within the basolateral nucleus of the amygdala (BLA) in the modulation of such effects. Methods: In the first experiment, male Wistar rats were exposed for 5 min to the EPM 27 min following intraperitoneal (i.p.) (1.0 ml/kg) injections of the preferential 5-HT2C receptor agonist 6-chloro-2[1-piperazinyl]pyrazine (MK-212) at doses of 1.0, 2.0, or 4.0 mg/kg. Control animals were injected with saline. The percentage of open-arm entries and the percentage of time spent in these arms were employed as anxiety indexes, whereas the number of closed-arm entries was calculated as indicative of locomotor activity. In the second experiment, rats were exposed for 10 min in an open-field arena to further assess the interference of the same MK-212 doses upon locomotor activity. In Experiment 3, rats were microinjected (0.2 µl) either with the mixed 5-HT2A/2C receptor antagonist ritanserin (0.5, 1.25, 2.5, and 5.0 µg) or its vehicle into the BLA 12 min following i.p. injections of saline or the intermediate dose of MK-212 (2.0 mg/kg). Fifteen minutes later, each animal was exposed to the EPM as before. Results: Whereas the highest dose of MK-212 (4.0 mg/kg) induced motor-suppressant effects in both EPM and openfield arena, the intermediate dose of the drug (2.0 mg/kg) reduced open-arm exploration without significantly affecting the number of closed-arm entries. This behavioral profile, consistent with selective anxiogenic effect in the EPM, was dose-dependently prevented by ritanserin microinfusion into the BLA. In saline-pretreated animals, however, ritanserin (all doses) was ineffective. Conclusions: MK-212 increases anxiety and decreases locomotor activity. The anxiogenic-like profile of 5-HT2 receptor activation is prevented by the blockade of 5-HT2 receptors within the BLA, which does not have an effect by itself upon basal anxiety levels triggered by the EPM.
