Age assessment of migrants is crucial, particularly for unaccompanied foreign minors, a population facing legal, social, and humanitarian challenges. Despite existing guidelines, there is no unified protocol in Europe for age assessment. The Forensic Anthropology Society of Europe (FASE) conducted a comprehensive questionnaire to understand age estimation practices in Europe. The questionnaire had sections focusing on the professional background of respondents, annual assessment numbers, requesting parties and reasons, types of examinations conducted (e.g., physical, radiological), followed protocols, age estimation methods, and questions on how age estimates are reported. The questionnaire's findings reveal extensive engagement of the forensic community in age assessment in the living, emphasizing multidisciplinary approaches. However, there seems to be an incomplete appreciation of AGFAD guidelines. Commonalities exist in examination methodologies and imaging tests. However, discrepancies emerged among respondents regarding sexual maturity assessment and reporting assessment results. Given the increasing importance of age assessment, especially for migrant child protection, the study stresses the need for a unified protocol across European countries. This can only be achieved if EU Member States wholeheartedly embrace the fundamental principles outlined in EU Directives and conduct medical age assessments aligned with recognized standards such as the AGFAD guidelines. Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the performance and ease of use of the Revogene® GBS DS PCR assay for the intrapartum detection of Group B Streptococcus (GBS) colonization, as compared with intrapartum culture and antenatal culture-based screening. Methods: Between April and August 2019, 398 women who gave birth in one of the three maternities participating in this study agreed to the collection of a vaginal swab when they arrived in the labor ward. The samples were immediately sent to the adjacent laboratory where they were discharged into the buffer provided with the Revogene® GBS DS assay. Part of the buffer was used to perform the Revogene® GBS DS test, and part of the same buffer was used for GBS culture. Results: The Revogene® GBS DS assay provided a valid result in less than 70 min for 356 (89%) women. The sensitivity of the test was 85.7% (66.4–95.3%). The specificity of the test was 99.1% (97.3–99.8%). The positive predictive value was 88.9% (69.7–97.1%). The negative predictive value was 98.9% (96.9–99.6%). Conclusion: The easy-to-use Revogene® GBS DS assay provides a valuable tool for the detection of GBS colonization at the beginning of labor. The sensitivity and turn-around time are adequate. The high number of invalid results needs to be addressed before the Revogene® GBS DS test can be expected to replace the current screening-based approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The lacertus fibrosus (LF) is involved in various surgeries. However, the biomechanical contribution of the LF remains unclear. The aim of this study was to determine the role of the lacertus fibrosus on the elbow and forearm kinematics and on the biceps brachii muscle lever arms. Methods: This biomechanical study was performed on seven fresh-frozen upper limbs of cadavers. Elbow flexion, forearm supination, and biceps brachii muscle lever arms were analyzed in the intact conditions (I) and after superficial (R) and deep part (R2) of the lacertus fibrosus release, respectively. Results: Elbow flexion shows a significant difference (p < 0.0001) between I, R, R2. Abduction/adduction shows a significant difference between I-R (p < 0.0001) and I-R2 (p < 0.0001). Supination does not show a significant difference in mean maximum amplitude, but between 40 and 70%, there are significant differences. There is a significant mean decrease of lever arm in flexion (28%) and supination (50%) after superficial and deep part of the lacertus fibrosus release. Conclusion: The results of this study show that the lacertus fibrosus increases the lever arm during flexion and supination. It limits the flexion and abduction of the elbow and supination of the forearm. Lacertus fibrosus maintains the rhythmicity between the elbow flexion and supination of the forearm. Prediction and time estimation are all but required for motor function in everyday life. In the context of eye movements, for instance, they allow predictive saccades and eye re-acceleration in anticipation of a target re-appearance. While the neural pathways involved are not fully understood, it is known that the frontal lobe plays an important role. As such, neurological disorders that affect it, such as frontotemporal (FTD) dementia, are likely to induce deficits in such movements. In this work, we study the performances of frontotemporal dementia patients in an oculomotor task designed to elicit predictive saccades at different rates, and compare them to young and older adults. Clear deficits in the production of predictive saccades were found in patients, in particular when the time between saccades was short (~500 ms). Furthermore, one asymptomatic C9ORF72 mutation bearer showed patterns of oculomotor behavior similar to FTD patients. He exhibited FTD symptoms within 3 years post-measure, suggesting that an impairment of oculomotor function could be an early clinical sign. Taken together, these results argue in favor of a role of the frontal lobe in predictive movements timing over short timescales, and suggest that predictive saccades in FTD patients warrant further investigation to fully assess their potential as a diagnostic aid. This study analyzed the characteristics of pursuit and assessed the influence of prior and visual information on eye velocity and saccades in amblyopic and control children, in comparison to adults. Eye movements of 41 children (21 amblyopes and 20 controls) were compared to eye movements of 55 adults (18 amblyopes and 37 controls). Participants were asked to pursue a target moving at a constant velocity. The target was either a 'standard' target, with a uniform color intensity, or a 'noisy' target, with blurry edges, to mimic the blurriness of an amblyopic eye. Analysis of pursuit patterns showed that the onset was delayed, and the gain was decreased in control children with a noisy target in comparison to amblyopic or control children with a standard target. Furthermore, a significant effect of prior and visual information on pursuit velocity and saccades was found across all participants. Moreover, the modulation of the effect of visual information on the pursuit velocity by group, that is amblyopes or controls with a standard target, and controls with a noisy target, was more limited in children. In other words, the effect of visual information was higher in control adults with a standard target compared to control children with the same target. However, in the case of a blurry target, either in control participants with a noisy target or in amblyopic participants with a standard target, the effect of visual information was larger in children. Maltitol shows interesting properties compared with mannitol or sorbitol, two other polyols, which are widely used as a pharmaceutical excipients for tablet compaction. For this study, the properties of an amorphous polyol, maltitol, were investigated using a tablet press simulator. The aim of this study was to evaluate the behavior of amorphous maltitol compared to SweetPearl® P 200, a pure product, and SweetPearl® P 300 DC, a textured crystalline maltitol excipient for direct compression. The physicochemical and pharmacotechnical properties were compared, revealing a major change in properties after amorphization. The study of the tabletability, mean yield pressure, elastic properties, etc. shows that the compression behavior of amorphous powders has been significantly altered. The results showed specific properties of amorphous maltitol with good tabletability at low compaction pressure. The stability of the amorphous and the evolution of its behavior in compression were then studied, showing a direct link between its recrystallization and the change in its properties. The use of a stabilizing agent, maltotriitol, slowed down the recrystallization, maintaining the specific properties of the amorphous material in compression for a longer period of time. Grip force has been studied widely in a variety of interaction and movement tasks, however, not much is known about the timing of the grip force control in preparation for interaction with objects. For example, it is unknown whether and how the temporal preparation for a collision is related to (the prediction of) the impact load. To study this question, we examined the anticipative timing of the grip force in preparation for impact loads. We designed a collision task with different types of load forces in a controlled virtual environment. Participants interacted with a robotic device (KINARM, BKIN Technologies, Kingston) whose handles were equipped with force sensors which the participants held in precision grip. Representations of the hand and objects were visually projected on a virtual reality display and forces were applied onto the participant's hand to simulate a collision with the virtual objects. The collisions were alternating between the two hands to allow transfer and learning between the hands. The results show that there is immediate transfer of object information between the two hands, since the grip force levels are (almost) fully adjusted after one collision with the opposite hand. The results also show that the grip force levels are nicely adjusted based on the mass and stiffness of the object. Surprisingly, the temporal onset of the grip force build up did not depend on the impact load, so that participants avoid slippage by adjusting the other grip force characteristics (e.g., grip force level and rate of change), therefore considering these self-imposed timing constraints. With the use of catch trials, for which no impact occurred, we further analyzed the temporal profile of the grip force. The catch trial data showed that the timing of the grip force peak is also independent of the impact load and its timing, which suggests a time-locked planning of the complete grip force profile. Treatment of tuberculosis still represent a major public health issue. The emergence of multi-and extensively-drug resistant (MDR and XDR) Mycobacterium tuberculosis clinical strains further pinpoint the urgent need for new anti-tuberculous drugs. We previously showed that vancomycin can target mycobacteria lacking cell wall integrity, especially those lacking related phthiocerol and phthiodolone dimycocerosates, PDIM A and PDIM B, respectively. As aloe emodin was previously hypothesized to be able to target the synthesis of mycobacterial cell wall lipids, we tested its ability to potentiate glycopeptides antimycobacterial activity. The aloe emodin with the vancomycin induced a combination effect beyond simple addition, close to synergism, at a concentration lower to reported IC50 cytotoxic value, on M. bovis BCG and on H37Rv M. tuberculosis. Interestingly, out of six MDR and pre-XDR clinical strains, one showed a strong synergic susceptibility to the drug combination. Purpose: The lacertus fibrosus (LF) is involved in various surgical procedures. However, the anatomy, morphometry, topography and biomechanical involvements of LF are not clear. The purpose of this study was to determine the anatomical and morphometric variations of LF, and to correlate this with anthropometric and morphometric measurements of the upper limb. Furthermore, the presence or absence of a deep layer of LF was verified using forearm cross-sections and dissections. Methods: This anatomical study was performed by observation of dissections and transverse sections obtained from 50 cadavers. Morphometric analyses [length and width of LF and biceps tendon, stature, length of upper limb, forearm, bi-epicondylar width, forearm perimeter, biceps brachii muscle perimeter (BBm)] were also performed. Results: The results demonstrated that there was no significant correlation between LF morphology and morphometric upper limb measurements. The deep layer of LF was observed in all specimens. Conclusion: Results of this paper indicate that the LF presents individual characteristics such as length and width. The deeper layer of LF was observed on all specimens. The possible role of LF in force transmission during flexion, BBm moment arm adjustment and supination reduction is discussed in view of these results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coordinating the movements of different body parts is a challenging process for the central nervous system because of several problems. Four of these main difficulties are: first, moving one part can move others; second, the parts can have different dynamics; third, some parts can have different motor goals; and fourth, some parts may be perturbed by outside forces. Here, we propose a novel approach for the control of linked systems with feedback loops for each part. The proximal parts have separate goals, but critically the most distal part has only the common goal. We apply this new control policy to eye-head coordination in two-dimensions, specifically head-unrestrained gaze saccades. Paradoxically, the hierarchical structure has controllers for the gaze and the head, but not for the eye (the most distal part). Our simulations demonstrate that the proposed control structure reproduces much of the published empirical data about gaze movements, e.g., it compensates for perturbations, accurately reaches goals for gaze and head from arbitrary initial positions, simulates the nine relationships of the head-unrestrained main sequence, and reproduces observations from lesion and single-unit recording experiments. We conclude by showing how our model can be easily extended to control structures with more linked segments, such as the control of coordinated eye on head on trunk movements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study examined the influence of long-term (i.e., between-trial) and short-term (i.e., within-trial) predictive mechanisms on ocular pursuit during transient occlusion. To this end, we compared ocular pursuit of accelerative and decelerative target motion in trials that were presented in random or blocked-order. Catch trials in which target acceleration was unexpectedly modified were randomly interleaved in blocked-order trials. Irrespective of trial order, eye velocity decayed following target occlusion and then recovered towards the different levels of target velocity at reappearance. However, the recovery was better scaled in blocked-order trials than random-order trials. In blocked-order trials only, the reduced gain of smooth pursuit during occlusion was compensated by a change in saccade amplitude and resulted in total eye displacement (TED) that was well matched to target displacement. Subsidiary analysis indicated that three repeats of blocked-order trials was sufficient for participants to modify eye displacement compared to that exhibited in random-order trials, although more trials were required before end-occlusion eye velocity was better scaled. Finally, we found that participants exhibited evidence of a scaled response to an unexpected change in target acceleration (i.e., catch trials), although there were also transfer effects from the preceding blocked-order trials. These findings are consistent with the suggestion that on-the-fly prediction (short-term effect) is combined with memorised information from previous trials (long-term effect) to generate a persistent and veridical prediction of occluded target motion. This paper investigates how the efficiency and robustness of a skilled rhythmic task compete against each other in the control of a bimanual movement. Human subjects juggled a puck in 2D through impacts with two metallic arms, requiring rhythmic bimanual actuation. The arms kinematics were only constrained by the position, velocity and time of impacts while the rest of the trajectory did not influence the movement of the puck. In order to expose the task robustness, we manipulated the task context in two distinct manners: the task tempo was assigned at four different values (hence manipulating the time available to plan and execute each impact movement individually); and vision was withdrawn during half of the trials (hence reducing the sensory inflows). We show that when the tempo was fast, the actuation was rhythmic (no pause in the trajectory) while at slow tempo, the actuation was discrete (with pause intervals between individual movements). Moreover, the withdrawal of visual information encouraged the rhythmic behavior at the four tested tempi. The discrete versus rhythmic behavior give different answers to the efficiency/robustness trade-off: discrete movements result in energy efficient movements, while rhythmic movements impact the puck with negative acceleration, a property preserving robustness. Moreover, we report that in all conditions the impact velocity of the arms was negatively correlated with the energy of the puck. This correlation tended to stabilize the task and was influenced by vision, revealing again different control strategies. It is generally accepted that in cats smooth pursuit velocity of the eye never exceeds a few degrees per second. This is in contrast with observations in primates, where smooth pursuit velocity can reach values as high as 100°/s. Cats were trained to fixate and pursue spots of light appearing on a translucent screen. Spots were moved in the horizontal and vertical planes at different constant velocities up to 80°/s. Eye position was recorded with the sclerai search coil technique. Naive cats did not pursue moving targets with high efficiency. Smooth eye movement velocity saturated at 5°/s. After a few days of training, smooth-pursuit eye velocity increased with target velocity and saturated at 25°/s on average. However, velocities twice as high have been observed frequently. When the target was unexpectedly extinguished, smooth eye movement velocity dropped to values close to 0°/s in approximately 350 ms. After a short training period (usually 5 times the same target presentation), the eye continued to move smoothly until the target reappeared. These data suggest that smooth pursuit eye movements of the cat are qualitatively similar to those of primates, but reach lower velocities and are more variable in their characteristics. An experimental study of head-free and headfixed gaze shifts explores the role of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) during saccadic and slow phase components of the gaze shifts. A systematic comparison of head-free and head-fixed gaze shifts in humans revealed that while the VOR is switched off as soon as the saccade starts, its function is progressively restored during the terminal phase of the saccade. The duration of this restoration period is fairly constant; therefore, the faster the gaze saccade, the sooner the VOR function starts to be restored. On the basis of these experimental data, a new eye-head coordination model is proposed. This model is an extension of the one proposed by Laurutis and Robinson (1986) where VOR gain is a function of both the dynamic gaze error signal and head velocity. This extension has also been added to another eye-head coordination model (Guitton et al. 1990). Both modified models yield simulation results comparable to experimental data. This study pinpoints the high efficiency of the gaze control system. Indeed, a fixed period of time (≈40 ms) is needed to restore the inhibited VOR; the gaze control system thus must have a knowledge of its own dynamics in order to be able to anticipate the end of the saccadic movement.
