Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), a crucial element of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), metabolizes angiotensin II into Ang (1–7), which then combines with the Mas receptor (MasR) to fulfill its protective role in various diseases. Nevertheless, the involvement of ACE2 in sepsis-induced cardiomyopathy (SIC) is still unexplored. In this study, our results revealed that CLP surgery dramatically impaired cardiac function accompanied with disruption of the balance between ACE2-Ang (1–7) and ACE-Ang II axis in septic heart tissues. Moreover, ACE2 knockin markedly alleviated sepsis induced RAS disorder, cardiac dysfunction and improved survival rate in mice, while ACE2 knockout significantly exacerbates these outcomes. Adoptive transfer of bone marrow cells and in vitro experiments showed the positive role of myeloid ACE2 by mitigating oxidative stress, inflammatory response, macrophage polarization and cardiomyocyte apoptosis by blocking NF-κB and STAT1 signals. However, the beneficial impacts were nullified by MasR antagonist A779. Collectively, these findings showed that ACE2 alleviated SIC by inhibiting M1 macrophage via activating the Ang (1–7)-MasR axis, highlight that ACE2 might be a promising target for the management of sepsis and SIC patients. The number of patients with COVID-19 caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 is still increasing. In the case of COVID-19 and tuberculosis (TB), the presence of one disease affects the infectious status of the other. Meanwhile, coinfection may result in complications that make treatment more difficult. However, the molecular mechanisms underpinning the interaction between TB and COVID-19 are unclear. Accordingly, transcriptome analysis was used to detect the shared pathways and molecular biomarkers in TB and COVID-19, allowing us to determine the complex relationship between COVID-19 and TB. Two RNA-seq datasets (GSE114192 and GSE163151) from the Gene Expression Omnibus were used to find concerted differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between TB and COVID-19 to identify the common pathogenic mechanisms. A total of 124 common DEGs were detected and used to find shared pathways and drug targets. Several enterprising bioinformatics tools were applied to perform pathway analysis, enrichment analysis and networks analysis. Protein–protein interaction analysis and machine learning was used to identify hub genes (GAS6, OAS3 and PDCD1LG2) and datasets GSE171110, GSE54992 and GSE79362 were used for verification. Sepsis-induced acute liver injury (ALI) is common in intensive care units. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) plays a vital role in hepatic fibrosis and steatosis; however, its role in sepsis-induced ALI remains unclear. This study found that hepatic ACE2 expression in cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)-treated mice significantly decreased 24 h after CLP. ACE2-transgenic (TG) mice exhibited a significant improvement in CLP-induced ALI, accompanied by the inhibition of hepatocyte apoptosis, oxidative stress, and inflammation, while ACE2-knockout mice demonstrated an opposite trend. During sepsis-induced ALI, ACE2-TG could also elevate the Ang-(1–7) and Mas receptor (MasR) levels in liver tissues. Interestingly, the MasR inhibitor A779 abrogated the favorable effects of ACE2 on CLP-induced ALI. In a bone marrow transplantation experiment, the ACE2-TG transplantation group showed significantly improved inflammation and liver dysfunction, less hepatocyte apoptosis, and reduced oxidative stress after CLP compared with the wild-type transplantation group. In contrast, the ACE2-knockout group showed poor inflammatory response and liver dysfunction, significantly more hepatocyte apoptosis, and elevated oxidative stress than the wild-type transplantation group after CLP. ACE2 protects against sepsis-induced ALI by inhibiting hepatocyte apoptosis, oxidative stress, and inflammation via the Ang-(1–7)–Mas receptor axis. Porcine circoviruses (PCVs) are a significant cause of concern for swine health, with four genotypes currently recognized. Two of these, PCV3 and PCV4, have been detected in pigs across all age groups, in both healthy and diseased animals. These viruses have been associated with various clinical manifestations, including porcine dermatitis and nephropathy syndrome (PDNS) and respiratory and enteric signs. In this study, we detected PCV3 and PCV4 in central China between January 2022 and February 2023. We tested fecal swabs and tissue samples from growing-finishing and suckling pigs with or without respiratory and systemic manifestations and found the prevalence of PCV3 to be 15.15% (15/99) and that of PCV3/PCV4 coinfection to be 4.04% (4/99). This relatively low prevalence might be attributed to the fact that most of the clinical samples were collected from pigs exhibiting respiratory signs, with only a few samples having been obtained from pigs with diarrhea. In some cases, PCV2 was also detected, and the coinfection rates of PCV2/3, PCV2/4, and PCV2/3/4 were 6.06% (6/99), 5.05% (5/99), and 3.03% (3/99), respectively. The complete genomic sequences of four PCV3 and two PCV4 isolates were determined. All four of the PCV3 isolates were of subtype PCV3b, and the two PCV4 isolates were of subtype PCV4b. Two mutations (A24V and R27K) were found in antibody recognition domains of PCV3, suggesting that they might be associated with immune escape. This study provides valuable insights into the molecular epidemiology and evolution of PCV3 and PCV4 that will be useful in future investigations of genotyping, immunogenicity, and immune evasion strategies. Tripartite motif–containing 29 (TRIM29), also known as the ataxia telangiectasia group D-complementing (ATDC) gene, has been reported to play an oncogenic or tumor suppressive role in developing different tumors. So far, its expression and biological functions in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remain unclear. We investigated TRIM29 expression pattern in human HCC samples using quantitative RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry. Relationships between TRIM29 expression level, clinical prognostic indicators, overall survival (OS), and disease-free survival (DFS) were evaluated by Kaplan–Meier analysis and Cox proportional hazards model. A series of in vitro experiments and a xenograft tumor model were conducted to detect the functions of TRIM29 in HCC cells. RNA sequencing, western blotting, and immunochemical staining were performed to assess the molecular regulation of TRIM29 in HCC. We found that the mRNA and protein levels of TRIM29 were significantly reduced in HCC samples, compared with adjacent noncancerous tissues, and were negatively correlated with poor differentiation of HCC tissues. Survival analysis confirmed that lower TRIM29 expression significantly correlated with shorter OS and DFS of HCC patients. TRIM29 overexpression remarkably inhibited cell proliferation, migration, and EMT in HCC cells, whereas knockdown of TRIM29 reversed these effects. Moreover, deactivation of the PTEN/AKT/mTOR and JAK2/STAT3 pathways might be involved in the tumor suppressive role of TRIM29 in HCC. Our findings indicate that TRIM29 in HCC exerts its tumor suppressive effects through inhibition of the PTEN/AKT/mTOR and JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathways and may be used as a potential biomarker for survival in patients with HCC. A reduced graphene oxide (RGO) supported Fe3O4-MnO2 nanocomposite (Fe3O4-MnO2@RGO) was successfully prepared for catalytic degradation of oxytetracycline (20 mg/L) by potassium persulfate (PS) and adsorption removal of mixture of Pb2+, Cu2+, and Cd2+ ions (each 0.2 mM) in the synchronous scenario. The removal efficiencies of oxytetracycline, Pb2+, Cu2+, and Cd2+ ions were observed as high as 100%, 99.9%, 99.8%, and 99.8%, respectively, under the conditions of [PS]0 = 4 mM, pH0 = 7.0, Fe3O4-MnO2@RGO dosage = 0.8 g/L, reaction time = 90 min. The ternary composite exhibited higher oxytetracycline degradation/mineralization efficiency, greater metal adsorption capacity (Cd2+ 104.1 mg/g, Pb2+ 206.8 mg/g, Cu2+ 70.2 mg/g), and better PS utilization (62.6%) than its unary and binary counterparts including RGO, Fe3O4, Fe3O4@RGO, and Fe3O4-MnO2. More importantly, the ternary composite had good magnetic recoverability and excellent reusability. Notably, Fe, Mn, and RGO could play a synergistic role in the improvement of pollutant removal. Quenching results indicate that surface bounded SO4•– was the major contributor to oxytetracycline decomposition, and the -OH groups on the composite surface shouldered a significant role in PS activation. Ta–W alloys have unique properties but their applications at high temperatures are restricted due to their poor oxidation resistances. The addition of Al and Ti decreases the oxidation rate of the alloy, as Al-contained protective oxide layer could be formed. In this study, ternary and quaternary Ta–W alloys containing Al and Ti were prepared by hot press sintering. The microstructures and oxidation behaviors of the alloys were studied at 1173 K. The results show that the oxidation kinetics of all alloys follows a parabolic law at short oxidation periods. After cyclic oxidation, the kinetics of quaternary alloys still obeys the parabolic law but that of ternary alloy has been changed into linear law kinetics after 8-h oxidation. For ternary alloy, an outer layer with dense and continuous alumina was formed during the initial stage, and phase transformation caused the oxides to peel off. By comparison, the quaternary alloys depicted continuously solid solution of the oxides layer. Overall, Al and Ti played key roles in oxidation degree and affected the oxidation kinetics of ternary and quaternary alloys. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Laparoscopic hepatectomy has gained popularity in the management of malignant liver lesions in the past decade. Its safety and feasibility, with faster recovery and comparable long-term outcomes, have been widely published. Nonetheless, laparoscopic isolated caudate lobectomy is still rare and technically demanding. We herein present a video on laparoscopic total caudate lobectomy for caudate cholangiocarcinoma. Methods: The patient is a 61-year-old man who presented with epigastric distending discomfort. A contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging was performed, showing a 4.6 × 3.9 cm tumor in the caudate lobe adjacent to the inferior vena cava, middle hepatic vein, right hepatic vein, as well as the bifurcation of the main trunk of the portal pedicle. The carbohydrate antigen was elevated to 54.58 U/ml (normal < 37 U/ml), and his liver function was normal. With the preoperative diagnosis of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, laparoscopic caudate lobectomy was contemplated. Results: The operative time was 300 min. The estimated intraoperative blood loss was 180 ml. The patient was discharged on the seventh postoperative day without any complications. Histopathological examination showed a 4.2 cm cholangiocarcinoma (T2N0M0) with a negative margin. He received a course of adjuvant chemotherapy. No recurrence was noted upon follow-up at 6 months after the operation. Conclusions: Laparoscopic resection for caudate lobe is a feasible and safe procedure. An experienced hepatobiliary surgeon could perform the procedure in selected cases, even with hepatic vein invasion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) based on two spherical structures is proposed and temperature and humidity are measured simultaneously. The device is fabricated by inserting two spherical structures into a single mode optical fiber (SMF). The results of the experiment indicate that the temperature sensitivities are 0.079 nm/°C and 0.090 nm/°C from 10 °C to 60 °C, respectively. When the humidity changes from 30% to 70%, the humidity sensitivities are 0.148 nm/%RH and 0.06 nm/%RH, respectively. Therefore, temperature and humidity are measured simultaneously by the sensitive matrix. The new structure is demonstrated to be a particularly useful approach to detect temperature and humidity. The combustion characteristics of two kinds of unburned pulverized coal (UPC) made from bituminous coal and anthracite were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis under air. The reaction kinetics mechanisms between UPC and CO2 in an isofhermal experiment in the temperature range 1000–1100°C were investigated. The combustion performance of unburned pulverized coal made from bituminous coal (BUPC) was better than that of unburned pulverized coal made from anthracite (AUPC). The combustion characteristic indexes (S) of BUPC and AUPC are 0.47 × 10−6 and 0.34 × 10−6%2·min−2·°C−3, respectively, and the combustion reaction apparent activation energies are 91.94 and 102.63 kJ·mol−1, respectively. The reaction mechanism of BUPC with CO2 is random nucleation and growth, and the apparent activation energy is 96.24 kJ·mol−1. By contrast, the reaction mechanism of AUPC with CO2 follows the shrinkage spherical function model and the apparent activation energy is 133.55 kJ·mol−1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes a brain-inspired simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) system using oriented features from accelerated segment test and rotated binary robust independent elementary (ORB) features of RGB (red, green, blue) sensor for a mobile robot. The core SLAM system, dubbed RatSLAM, can construct a cognitive map using information of raw odometry and visual scenes in the path traveled. Different from existing RatSLAM system which only uses a simple vector to represent features of visual image, in this paper, we employ an efficient and very fast descriptor method, called ORB, to extract features from RGB images. Experiments show that these features are suitable to recognize the sequences of familiar visual scenes. Thus, while loop closure errors are detected, the descriptive features will help to modify the pose estimation by driving loop closure and localization in a map correction algorithm. With the addition of urea as an inhibitor, four groups of reducing dioxin emission experiments in sintering pot were conducted. The results show that, adding 0.05%, 0.1% and 0.5% (mass fraction) urea, the emission concentrations of dioxin are 0.287, 0.258 and 0.217 ng-TEQ/m, respectively. The dioxin emission rates drop substantially compared to 0.777 ng-TEQ/m free of urea. With an increase of the urea content, the concentration of SO emission reduces sharply. (NH)SO, formed by the reaction of SO and NH, goes into the dust and part of NH3 is released before reaction with the emission of exhaust gas. The NO emission presents an increasing trend because the reaction of NH and O at high temperature produces NO. Based on the consideration of factors such as the effect of reducing dioxin emission, and the chemical composition of exhaust gas, 0.05% is the optimum adding content of urea. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
