The immune system plays a critical role in the establishment, development, and progression of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). As treatment with single-immune checkpoint agent results in a lower response rate in patients, it is important to investigate new strategies to maintain favorable anti-tumor immune response. Herein, the combination immunotherapeutic value of CTLA4 blockade and SFKs inhibition was assessed in transgenic HNSCC mouse model. Our present work showed that tumor growth was not entirely controlled when HNSCC model mice were administered anti-CTLA4 chemotherapeutic treatment. Moreover, it was observed that Src family kinases (SFKs) were hyper-activated and lack of anti-tumor immune responses following anti-CTLA4 chemotherapeutic treatment. We hypothesized that activation of SFKs is a mechanism of anti-CTLA4 immunotherapy resistance. We, therefore, carried out combined drug therapy using anti-CTLA4 mAbs and an SFKs’ inhibitor, dasatinib. As expected, dasatinib and anti-CTLA4 synergistically inhibited tumor growth in Tgfbr1/Pten 2cKO mice. Furthermore, dasatinib and anti-CTLA4 combined to reduce the number of myeloid-derived suppressor cells and Tregs, increasing the CD8
+ T cell-to-Tregs ratio. We also found that combining dasatinib with anti-CTLA4 therapy significantly attenuated the expression of p-STAT3Y705 and Ki67 in tumoral environment. These results suggest that combination therapy with SFKs inhibitors may be a useful therapeutic approach to increase the efficacy of anti-CTLA4 immunotherapy in HNSCC. Habitat dispersion, diet and density can influence the per capita population growth of predators, and dispersed habitat can provide a spatial refuge that reduces the possibility of cannibalism among predators, thereby increasing their realized population growth rate. We tested the influence of variable habitat dispersion (dispersed patches, general patches and aggregated patches), two diets (Typha orientalis pollen and Ephestia kuehniella eggs) and initial predator density—one or two Amblydromalus limonicus (Garman and McGregor) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) founder females—on the population growth of A. limonicus in 7 days. Dispersed patches resulted in a higher total number of A. limonicus than the other two types of habitat dispersion from days 3-7 when fed on either of the diets, and started with either one or two A. limonicus females. Compared with E. kuehniella eggs, T. orientalis pollen resulted in more A. limonicus regardless of one or two founder females. Compared with two founder females, beginning with one founder female on pollen produced significantly more predatory mite females in dispersed and aggregated patches. A four-way ANOVA showed that the main effects indicated that habitat, diet, density, and time significantly influenced the number of immature and female A. limonicus. Significant interactions between habitat dispersion and diet were detected on immature and female A. limonicus. Our findings suggest that increasing the dispersion of artificial shelters on crop leaves may stimulate the control efficiency of predators in greenhouses. Furthermore, T. orientalis pollen provides a high nutritional quality supplemental diet that could enhance the ability of A. limonicus to control pests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study aimed to identify the alternatively spliced isoforms of pig MEF2A gene and to determine their mRNA expression patterns. Four alternatively spliced isoforms of pig MEF2A gene (i.e. MEF2A1, MEF2A2, MEF2A3 and MEF2A4) were cloned according to the results of transcriptome sequencing. The fifth to eighth exons of MEF2A1 were normally spliced. In MEF2A2, the fifth exon was missing; the sixth exon had an extra 138 bp at its 5′
end, and the seventh exon had an extra 102 bp at its 3′ end. In MEF2A3, the fifth exon was missing, and the sixth exon had an additional 138 bp at its 5′ end. In MEF2A4, the seventh exon had an extra 102 bp at its 3′ end. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) analysis indicated that the expression profiles of the four alternatively spliced transcripts in the longissimus dorsi differed between the Mashen and Large White pigs. MEF2A1 and MEF2A2 expression levels were the highest at 90 days of age and lowest at 180 days of age. MEF2A3 and MEF2A4 expression levels increased with age (in days). The four alternatively spliced isoforms of MEF2A were also expressed in the small intestine, cerebellum, pancreas, heart and lung. We have set up an ex vivo ovine ruminal model, which can mimic the multicellular process to explore the early steps in
Salmonella typhimurium lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation using RNA-seq technology. Ovine ruminal explants were collected for histological and transcriptional analysis and supernatants collected to quantitate lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) enzymes. A total of 8 and 523 genes were significantly over-expressed between LPS-treated and control tissues at 6 and 12 h, respectively. However, six and seven hundred and thirteen genes were substantially repressed between the aforementioned tissues, correspondingly. Key genes up-regulated in response to the addition of LPS were tumor necrosis factor (TNF), interlukin (IL)-1 beta(b), IL-6, IL-8, IL-17B, IL-19, MMP-1, MMP-3, and integrin alpha 2 (ITGA8, 9). This study shows for the first time that galectin-1 is up-regulated in an ex vivo ruminal segment model exposed to bacterial lipopolysaccharide following 6 h of incubation. The ruminal segment model has been shown to be a suitable tool to study the bacterial lipopolysaccharide effects on the ovine ruminal tissues prior to in vivo assessment. A campaign was conducted to assess and compare the personal exposure in L3 of Tianjin subway, focusing on PM levels, chemical compositions, morphology analysis, as well as the health risk of heavy metal in PM. The results indicated that the average concentration of the PM was 151.43 μg/m inside the train of the subway during rush hours. PM concentrations inside car under the ground are higher than those on the ground, and PM concentrations on the platform are higher than those inside car. Regarding metal concentrations, the highest element in PM samples was Fe; the level of which is 17.55 μg/m. OC is a major component of PM in Tianjin subway. Secondary organic carbon is the formation of gaseous organic pollutants in subway. SEM-EDX and TEM-EDX exhibit the presence of individual particle with a large metal content in the subway samples. For small Fe metal particles, iron oxide can be formed easily. With regard to their sources, Fe-containing particles are generated mainly from mechanical wear and friction processes at the rail-wheel-brake interfaces. The non-carcinogenic risk to metals Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn and Pb, and carcinogenic hazard of Cr and Ni were all below the acceptable level in L3 of Tianjin subway. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

10. Experimental and Numerical Study on the Cracked Chevron Notched Semi-Circular Bend Method for Characterizing the Mode I Fracture Toughness of Rocks.

The cracked chevron notched semi-circular bending (CCNSCB) method for measuring the mode I fracture toughness of rocks combines the merits (e.g., avoidance of tedious pre-cracking of notch tips, ease of sample preparation and loading accommodation) of both methods suggested by the International Society for Rock Mechanics, which are the cracked chevron notched Brazilian disc (CCNBD) method and the notched semi-circular bend (NSCB) method. However, the limited availability of the critical dimensionless stress intensity factor (SIF) values severely hinders the widespread usage of the CCNSCB method. In this study, the critical SIFs are determined for a wide range of CCNSCB specimen geometries via three-dimensional finite element analysis. A relatively large support span in the three point bending configuration was considered because the fracture of the CCNSCB specimen in that situation is finely restricted in the notch ligament, which has been commonly assumed for mode I fracture toughness measurements using chevron notched rock specimens. Both CCNSCB and NSCB tests were conducted to measure the fracture toughness of two different rock types; for each rock type, the two methods produce similar toughness values. Given the reported experimental results, the CCNSCB method can be reliable for characterizing the mode I fracture toughness of rocks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

11. Overexpression of Protein Kinase Mζ in the Prelimbic Cortex Enhances the Formation of Long-Term Fear Memory.

Neuroplasticity in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) after fear conditioning has been suggested to regulate the formation and expression of fear memory. Protein kinase Mζ (PKMζ), an isoform of protein kinase C with persistent activity, is involved in the formation and maintenance of memory. However, less is known about the role of PKMζ in the PFC in the formation of fear memory. We investigated whether the overexpression of PKMζ enhances the formation of auditory fear memory in rats. We found that microinfusion of lentiviral vector-expressing PKMζ into the prelimbic cortex (PrL) selectively enhanced the expression of PKMζ without influencing the expression of other isoforms of PKC. The overexpression of PKMζ in the PrL enhanced the formation of long-term fear memory without affecting short-term fear memory, whereas the overexpression of PKMζ in the infralimbic cortex had no effect on either short-term or long-term fear memory. The overexpression of PKMζ in the PrL had no effect on anxiety-like behavior or locomotor activity. We also found that PKMζ overexpression potentiated the fear conditioning-induced increase in the membrane levels of glutamate subunit 2 of AMPA receptors in the PrL. These results demonstrate that the overexpression of PKMζ in the PrL but not infralimbic cortex selectively enhanced the formation of long-term fear memory, and PKMζ in the PrL may be involved in the formation of fear memory. A study on the mechanical characteristics and permeability properties of sandstone and limestone from a coal mine under 3D stresses has been carried out with the MTS815 rock mechanics test system, and the characteristics of mechanics and permeability before and after the rock failure under hydro-mechanical coupling conditions have been analyzed and discussed. The research revealed the difference of mechanics and permeability before and after the rock failure and obtained the relationship among the strength, deformation and differential water pressure. It also obtained the correlation among the permeability and stress, strain and revealed the features of fractures which influenced the correlation. The results show that there are obvious weakening effects of differential water pressures on the mechanical properties after the rock damages; the permeability of rock mass in practical engineering is mainly controlled by the features of fractures; the permeability has an negative index correlation with the axial strain ε, and has a power function correlation with the mean stress σ( σ = ( σ + 2 σ)/3); for fractured limestone and coarse sandstone, the permeabiity will tend to be stable gradually when the mean stress reaches or exceeds a certain value σ. Rationale and objectives: A conditioned stimulus (CS) is associated with a fearful unconditioned stimulus (US) in the traditional fear conditioning model. After fear conditioning, the CS-US association memory undergoes the consolidation process to become stable. Consolidated memory enters an unstable state after retrieval and requires the reconsolidation process to stabilize again. Evidence indicates the important role of Rac (Ras-related C3 botulinum toxin substrate) in the acquisition and extinction of fear memory. In the present study, we hypothesized that Rac in the amygdala is crucial for the reconsolidation of auditory and contextual Pavlovian fear memory. Methods: Auditory and contextual fear conditioning and microinjections of the Rac inhibitor NSC23766 were used to explore the role of Rac in the reconsolidation of auditory and contextual Pavlovian fear memory in rats. Results: A microinjection of NSC23766 into the basolateral amygdala (BLA) but not central amygdala (CeA) or cornu ammonis 1 (CA1) immediately after memory retrieval disrupted the reconsolidation of auditory Pavlovian fear memory. A microinjection of NSC23766 into the CA1 but not BLA or CeA after memory retrieval disrupted the reconsolidation of contextual Pavlovian fear memory. Conclusions: Our experiments demonstrate that Rac in the BLA is crucial for the reconsolidation of auditory Pavlovian fear memory, whereas Rac in the CA1 is critical for the reconsolidation of contextual Pavlovian fear memory. Fear extinction has been extensively studied, but little is known about the molecular processes that underlie the persistence of extinction long-term memory (LTM). We found that microinfusion of norepinephrine (NE) into the CA1 area of the dorsal hippocampus during the early phase (0 h) after extinction enhanced extinction LTM at 2 and 14 days after extinction. Intra-CA1 infusion of NE during the late phase (12 h) after extinction selectively promoted extinction LTM at 14 days after extinction that was blocked by the β-receptor antagonist propranolol, protein kinase A (PKA) inhibitor Rp-cAMPS, and protein synthesis inhibitors anisomycin and emetine. The phosphorylation levels of PKA, cyclic adenosine monophosphate response element-binding protein (CREB), GluR1, and the membrane GluR1 level were increased by NE during the late phase after extinction that was also blocked by propranolol and Rp-cAMPS. These results suggest that the enhancement of extinction LTM persistence induced by NE requires the activation of the β-receptor/PKA/CREB signaling pathway and membrane GluR1 trafficking. Moreover, extinction increased the phosphorylation levels of Erk1/2, CREB, and GluR1, and the membrane GluR1 level during the late phase, and anisomycin/emetine alone disrupted the persistence of extinction LTM, indicating that the persistence of extinction LTM requires late-phase protein synthesis in the CA1. Propranolol and Rp-cAMPS did not completely disrupt the persistence of extinction LTM, suggesting that another β-receptor/PKA-independent mechanism underlies the persistence of extinction LTM. Altogether, our results showed that enhancing hippocampal noradrenergic activity during the late phase after extinction selectively promotes the persistence of extinction LTM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The high level of abscission of developing reproductive organs in soybean ( Glycine max L. Merr.) causes severe yield loss. The role of ethylene in hastening organ abscission has been well documented. However, little is known about the regulatory mechanism by which ethylene influences abscission in soybean. Ethylene synthesis inhibitor [0.5 mM silver thiosulfate (STS)], ethylene-releasing compound [400 mg/L ethephon (ETH)], and water were applied twice with a 5-day interval between the applications. The STS-treated plants produced more flowers and pods, resulting in 55.6 % greater seed yield. ETH treatment significantly increased ( P < 0.05) the abscission rate of flowers and pods. Three digital gene expression libraries (STS-, ETH- and control library) were constructed. Illumina sequencing of the three libraries was used to identify 9.7 to 10.5 million unigenes. Strong correlations were observed among different gene expression profiles and specific metabolite groups (such as plant hormone biosynthesis and signal transduction; starch and sucrose metabolism; and secondary metabolism) suggesting the importance of these metabolic pathways during ethylene regulation. Potential ethylene target genes such as 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate ( ACC)- oxidase, 2C protein phosphatases ( PP2Cs), MAT1, acetyltransferase, bidirectional sugar transporter SWEET1- like, and so on were identified. These results suggest that ethylene regulates flower and pod abscission in soybean by direct transcriptional regulation of genes that are involved in the metabolic and regulatory processes related to both floral organ development and abscission. 17. Real-time tracking of adipose tissue-derived stem cells with injectable scaffolds in the infarcted heart.

Adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ADSCs) has shown promise in the emerging field of regenerative medicine. Many studies have highlighted the importance of coadministering a 'scaffold' for increasing intramyocardial retention of stem cells. In this work, an optimized method was developed for efficient transduction of ADSCs with a lentiviral vector carrying a triple-fusion reporter gene that consists of firefly luciferase, monomeric red fluorescence protein, and truncated thymidine kinase (fluc-mrfp-ttk). The transduced ADSCs were assessed on biological performance and transplanted into infarcted heart with fibrin scaffolds. In vivo cell retention was tracked by bioluminescence imaging (BLI) and micro positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) imaging. Histological assessment was performed for regeneration potentials. The results showed that lentiviral transduction did not influence cell functions. In vitro imaging analysis showed a robust linear correlation between cell numbers and BLI signals ( R = 0.99) as well as between cell numbers and radiotracer uptakes ( R = 0.98). Transduced ADSCs were visualized in the heart under both BLI and PET/CT imaging, contributing to cardiomyocyte regeneration and angiogenesis in the implanted areas. Compared with BLI monitoring, PET/CT data provided precise localization for cell retention. Thus, a combination of imaging modalities can assist in reliable and efficient monitoring of transplanted cells, holding great potential for the transplantation of injectable scaffolds encapsulating stem cells in treating heart disease. Rationale: Circadian disturbances are strongly linked with major depression. The circadian proteins CLOCK and BMAL1 are abundantly expressed but function differently in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) and hippocampus. However, their roles in depressive-like behavior are still poorly understood. Objectives: To investigate the alterations of CLOCK and BMAL1 in the SCN and hippocampus in rats subjected to chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) and to explore the relationship of circadian protein and the depressive-like behavior. Results: Together with depressive-like behavior induced by CUS, CLOCK and BMAL1 in the SC were inhibited during the light period, and the peak expression of CLOCK in the hippocampus was shifted from the dark to light period. BMAL1 expression in the hippocampus was not significantly changed. Two weeks after the termination of CUS, abnormalities of CLOCK in the CA1 and CA3 endured, with unchanged depressive-like behavior, but the expression of CLOCK and BMAL1 in the SCN recovered to control levels. Knockdown of the Clock gene in CA1 induced depressive-like behavior in normal rats. CLOCK in the SCN and hippocampus may participate in the development of depressive-like behavior. However, CLOCK in the hippocampus but not SCN was involved in the long-lasting effects of CUS on depressive-like behavior. BMAL1 in the hippocampus appeared to be unrelated to the effects of CUS on depressive-like behavior. Conclusion: CLOCK protein in the hippocampus but not SCN play an important role in the long-lasting depressive-like behavior induced by CUS. Depression is one of the most common and debilitating psychiatric illnesses around the world, but the current antidepressants used to treat depression have many limitations. Progressively more studies have shown that neuropeptide systems are potential novel therapeutic targets for depression. However, whether the neuropeptide trefoil factor 3 (TFF3) participates in the development of depression has not been examined. In the current experiments, we assessed the antidepressant effects of TFF3 using the forced swim test (FST), tail suspension test (TST), and chronic mild stress (CMS) paradigm. Furthermore, we determined the mechanism that underlies the antidepressant-like effects of TFF3 in the rat FST. TFF3 dose-dependently reduced immobility time in both FST and TST. CMS elevated plasma TFF3 and decreased basolateral amygdala (BLA) TFF3 levels in rats, and acute TFF3 (0.1 mg/kg, i.p.) treatment reversed the depressive-like behaviors induced by CMS. Furthermore, TFF3 (0.1 mg/kg, i.p.) significantly increased Fos expression in the BLA, medial prefrontal cortex, and hypothalamus in rats subjected to the FST. Intra-BLA infusions of TFF3 (1 ng/side) exerted rapid antidepressant-like effects in the rat FST. Additionally, acute systemic TFF3 administration increased the level of phosphorylated-Akt (p-Akt) in the BLA. Finally, intra-BLA infusions of LY294002 (5 mM/side), a specific phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) inhibitor, significantly blocked the antidepressant-like effect of TFF3. Our results demonstrated that TFF3 exerts antidepressant-like effects that might be mediated by the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway in the BLA. 20. Transit smart card data mining for passenger origin information extraction.

- Abstract
The automated fare collection (AFC) system, also known as the transit smart card (SC) system, has gained more and more popularity among transit agencies worldwide. Compared with the conventional manual fare collection system, an AFC system has its inherent advantages in low labor cost and high efficiency for fare collection and transaction data archival. Although it is possible to collect highly valuable data from transit SC transactions, substantial efforts and methodologies are needed for extracting such data because most AFC systems are not initially designed for data collection. This is true especially for the Beijing AFC system, where a passenger's boarding stop (origin) on a flat-rate bus is not recorded on the check-in scan. To extract passengers' origin data from recorded SC transaction information, a Markov chain based Bayesian decision tree algorithm is developed in this study. Using the time invariance property of the Markov chain, the algorithm is further optimized and simplified to have a linear computational complexity. This algorithm is verified with transit vehicles equipped with global positioning system (GPS) data loggers. Our verification results demonstrated that the proposed algorithm is effective in extracting transit passengers' origin information from SC transactions with a relatively high accuracy. Rationale and objectives: Accumulating clinical and preclinical studies have shown that the memories of the rewarding effects of drugs and their paired cues may contribute to relapse and persistent cocaine use. Glutaminergic actions in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) have been shown to regulate the rewarding effect of drugs and conditioned responses to drug-associated cues, but the role of the VTA in the acquisition, retrieval, and reconsolidation of cocaine cues is not yet known. Methods: In the present study, we used 7-chlorothiokynurenic acid (7-CTKA), an N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor glycine modulatory site antagonist with no rewarding effects, to examine the role of the NMDA receptor glycine modulatory site in the acquisition, retrieval, and reconsolidation of cocaine-related reward memory using the conditioned place preference (CPP) paradigm. Results: Separate groups of Sprague-Dawley rats were trained to acquire cocaine-induced CPP. Vehicle or 7-CTKA was microinjected into the VTA or substantia nigra (SN) (5 μg/μl) at different time points: 10 min before each CPP training session (acquisition), 10 min before the reactivation of CPP (retrieval), and immediately after the reactivation of CPP (reconsolidation). Cocaine-induced CPP was retested 24 h and 1 and 2 weeks after 7-CTKA administration. 7-CTKA microinjected into the VTA, but not SN, significantly impaired the acquisition, retrieval, and reconsolidation of cocaine-induced CPP without affecting cocaine-induced locomotion. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that the NMDA receptor glycine modulatory site in the VTA plays a major role in cocaine reward memory, and NMDA receptor glycine site antagonists may be potential pharmacotherapies for the management of relapse. The G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) are one of the largest super families of cell-surface receptors and play crucial roles in virtually every organ system. One particular family of GPCRs, the class C GPCRs, is distinguished by a characteristically large extracellular domain and constitutive dimerization. The structure and activation mechanism of this family result in potentially unique ligand recognition sites, thereby offering a variety of possibilities by which receptor activity might be modulated using novel compounds. In the present article, we aim to provide an overview of the exact sites and structural features involved in ligand recognition of the class C GPCRs. Furthermore, we demonstrate the precise steps that occur during the receptor activation process, which underlie the possibilities by which receptor function may be altered by different approaches. Rationale: Chronic psychostimulant administration increases locomotor activity, which is referred to as locomotor sensitization. Calcineurin has been suggested to participate in psychostimulant-induced sensitization, but the underlying neurobiological mechanism is poorly understood. Objectives: This study was designed to examine whether calcineurin activity and its substrates participate in methamphetamine (METH)-induced locomotor sensitization in rats. Materials and methods: Two weeks daily METH (1 mg/kg, i.p.) was administrated to rats to induce locomotor sensitization, activity of calcineurin and its substrates Synapsin and glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β) were detected. The initiation and expression of locomotor sensitization were tested by inhibition of calcineurin activity systematically or locally in the ventral tegmental area (VTA). Results: Expression of the calcineurin A subunit (catalytic subunit) increased in the VTA but not prefrontal cortex, nucleus accumbens, or hippocampus in rats sensitized to METH. The calcineurin inhibitor cyclosporine A, systemically administered or microinfused into the VTA, suppressed the initiation but not expression of METH-induced locomotor sensitization. Chronic METH exposure upregulated the expression of the calcineurin A subunit in the VTA, which was negatively associated with downregulation of the phosphorylation of Synapsin and GSK-3β. Moreover, the related molecular changes were blocked by systemically administered cyclosporine A or microinjections into the VTA. Conclusions: These data elucidate the critical role of calcineurin in the neurobiological mechanism underlying METH-induced locomotor sensitization, suggesting that calcineurin might participate in the initiation of METH-induced locomotor sensitization by negatively regulating the activity of Synapsin and GSK-3β in the VTA. The digital signal-obtaining for gyroscope is given. The single optic-fiber sensor via modulating intensity of light is used as measuring component. The influence on static transmission properties resulting from the special working environment (e.g. cryogenic and vacuum), the measure error because of the reflector shape of rotor, the abnormity of facula from sensor caused by the existence of engraving error, and the fixing error of sensor and the error of machine tool’s initial lignment are investigated. The mathematic model in every condition is founded, the simulation and relative experiments are done and the outcome is analyzed. The mathematic model and method of compensating technology are studied and some relative experiments are made. The result of study is useful to improvement of the signal-obtaining system. In this paper, a photoelectric signal obtained scheme via equator triangle pattern engraved on rotor is discussed and the mathematic model is deduced in the case which is deflexion between rotor axis and the coordinate frame of case. The deflexion error and coupling error under the situation are analyzed. Finally, three methods of engraving based on the spherical triangle pattern are presented. The error models of various methods are built up and the simulation curves are provided respectively. We have done the primary experiments on the surface of rotor using this method. It can be seen from the enlarged figures that the rim of the pattern is smooth and the demand of sensor resolution is satisfied by and large. Drought potentially affects carbon balance and growth of trees, but little is known to what extent soil plays a role in the trade-off between carbon gain and growth investment. In the present study, we analyzed leaf non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) as an indicator of the balance of photosynthetic carbon gain and carbon use, as well as growth of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) saplings, which were grown on two different soil types (calcareous and acidic) in model ecosystems and subjected to a severe summer drought. Our results showed that drought led in general to increased total NSC concentrations and to decreased growth rate, and drought reduced shoot and stem growth of plants in acidic soil rather than in calcareous soil. This result indicated that soil type modulated the carbon trade-off between net leaf carbon gain and carbon investment to growth. In drought-stressed trees, leaf starch concentration and growth correlated negatively whereas soluble sugar:starch ratio and growth correlated positively, which may contribute to a better understanding of growth regulation under drought conditions. Our results emphasize the role of soil in determining the trade-off between the balance of carbon gain and carbon use on the leaf level and growth under stress (e.g. drought). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
