The energy consumed by electron devices such as field-effect-transistors (FET) in an integrated circuit is mostly used to process different electrical signals. However, a fraction of that energy is also converted into heat that gets transferred throughout the integrated circuit and modifies the local temperature. The modification of the local temperature, which is interpreted as a self-heating mechanism, is a function of different charge carrier scattering mechanisms, the characteristic energy relaxation times for charge carriers, the heat carrier mechanisms, the geometry of the FET, the volume of the integrated circuit, and the composed thermal properties of the integrated circuit and the system package. Besides all those dependencies, the charge and heat transport properties are temperature dependent. All these features make the electrothermodynamic analysis and modeling of low-power cryogenic electron devices a compulsory need. In food industry, roselle beverages and their subproducts could be functional ingredients since they are an excellent source of bioactive compounds with improved performance due to their important anthocyanins content. The aim of this study was to analyze anthocyanin content and antioxidant properties of aqueous infusions elaborated with color contrasting Hibiscus materials and design a mathematical model in order to predict color-composition relationship. Color measurements of beverages from roselle (Negra, Sudan and Rosa) were made by transmission spectrophotometry, anthocyanins quantification was determined by HPLC, and antioxidant potential was evaluated by in vitro methods (ABTS and FRAP assays). Beverages prepared with particle size minor of 250 μm presented until 4- and 2- times more anthocyanins content and antioxidant capacity respectively, in comparison to beverages prepared with powders with particle size major of 750 μm. Positive correlations among pigments composition and color parameters were found (p < 0.05), showing that anthocyanins content, antioxidant capacity, C*ab and hab values increased in relation with the smallest particle size of flours. Also, mathematical models were stablished to predict anthocyanin content (r ≥ 0.97) and antioxidant capacity (r ≥ 0.89) from color data; we propose equations for quick estimation of the antioxidant capacity in the Hibiscus beverages with high anthocyanin content. The aim of this study was to determine the levels of different inorganic elements (lead [Pb], mercury [Hg], and arsenic [As]) and persistent chlorinated pollutants (including polychlorinated biphenyls [PCBs] and organochlorine pesticides [OCPs]) in blood and plasma of White stork ( Ciconia ciconia) nestlings from northwest (NW) Spain. The concentrations of PCBs were lower than the limit of detection in all samples. The OCPs γ-HCH, 4,4′-DDE, HCB, and endosulfan were detected most frequently in plasma from White stork nestlings. These OCPs were detected in 98, 54, 39, and 37 % of all samples, respectively. However, the concentrations of organic pollutants were lower than the risk thresholds for birds. The mean levels of the inorganic elements Pb, Hg, and As were found to be 36.92 ± 33.48, 16.48 ± 12.87, and 9.813 ± 13.84 µg/L, respectively. These levels were also lower than the risk thresholds for birds. This study not only provides a snapshot of the levels of both inorganic and organic contaminants in wild White storks in NW Spain, it also provides a useful baseline for biomonitoring levels of the measured contaminants in this area. The effect of enzymatic treatments using a commercial enzyme (Econase-cep at pH 5.0 and 0.1% w/w concentration) at different levels of dehydrated marigold meal (5, 10, 15 and 20% dry weight), to enhance carotenoid extraction, was evaluated. The AOAC method consisting of a simultaneous extraction and saponification by using hexane-ethanol-acetone-toluene (10:6:7:7 v/v) and metanolic KOH (40% w/v) was used to evaluate the carotenoid content. The measurement of carotenoids was also carried out in samples in which the water soluble compounds were previously eliminated (AOAC-H2O). Total carotenoids ranged from 11.4 to 17.4 g/kg and 18 to 24.7 g/kg of control and treated marigold meal, respectively. Two common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) varieties were seeded in the same location, harvested and cleaned. Three hardening procedures were used (soaking in acetate buffer, pH 4.1 at 37 degrees C for 5 h; storage at 37 degrees C, 100% RH for 28 days; and storage at 31-33 degrees C, 76% RH for 120 days) to have seeds in a hard-to-cook (HTC) state. The adverse effects of HTC condition, in terms of cooking time as assessed by a Mattson bean cooker, were practically eliminated by soaking seeds in salt solutions (1% NaCl + 0.75% NaHCO3; and 0.75% NaHCO3) instead of only water. Ultrastructural changes of cotyledon cells from fresh, HTC and softened seeds were observed. Micro-Kjeldahl, Lowry and Bradford procedures were compared for determining the protein content of Phaseolus vulgaris seeds during their development. Micro-Kjeldahl and biuret techniques were also compared with mature seeds of a normal and a genetically-improved bean cultivar. The protein contents of casein and soy protein isolate were as well estimated by these four methods. Anthocyanins are a group of water-soluble pigments that provide red, purple or blue color to the leaves, flowers, and fruits. In addition, benefits have been attributed to hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. This study compared the content of total anthocyanins and volatile compounds in aqueous and ethanolic extracts of four varieties of Mexican roselle, with different levels of pigmentation. The multivariable analysis of categorical data demonstrated that ethanol was the best solvent for the extraction of both anthocyanins and volatile compounds. The concentration of anthocyanin in pigmented varieties ranged from 17.3 to 32.2 mg of cyanidin 3-glucoside/g dry weight, while volatile compounds analysis showed that geraniol was the main compound in extracts from the four varieties. The principal component analysis (PCA) allowed description of results with 77.38% of variance establishing a clear grouping for each variety in addition to similarities among some of these varieties. These results were validated by the confusion matrix obtained in the classification by the factorial discriminate analysis (FDA); it can be useful for roselle varieties classification. Small differences in anthocyanin and volatile compounds content could be detected, and it may be of interest for the food industry in order to classify a new individual into one of several groups using different variables at once. In this work, we analyze the behavior of several parallel algorithms developed to compute the two-dimensional discrete wavelet transform using both OpenMP over a multicore platform and CUDA over a GPU. The proposed parallel algorithms are based on both regular filter-bank convolution and lifting transform with small implementations changes focused on both the memory requirements reduction and the complexity reduction. We compare our implementations against sequential CPU algorithms and other recently proposed algorithms like the SMDWT algorithm over different CPUs and the Wippig&Klauer algorithm over a GTX280 GPU. Finally, we analyze their behavior when algorithms are adapted to each architecture. Significant execution times improvements are achieved on both multicore platforms and GPUs. Depending on the multicore platform used, we achieve speed-ups of 1.9 and 3.4 using two and four processes, respectively, when compared to the sequential CPU algorithm, or we obtain speed-ups of 7.1 and 8.9 using eight and ten processes. Regarding GPUs, the GPU convolution algorithm using the GPU shared memory obtains speed-ups up to 20 when compared to the CPU sequential algorithm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The pig, Sus scrofa, is a foreign species to the American continent. Although pigs originally introduced in the Americas should be related to those from the Iberian Peninsula and Canary islands, the phylogeny of current creole pigs that now populate the continent is likely to be very complex. Because of the extreme climates that America harbors, these populations also provide a unique example of a fast evolutionary phenomenon of adaptation. Here, we provide a genome wide study of these issues by genotyping, with a 60k SNP chip, 206 village pigs sampled across 14 countries and 183 pigs from outgroup breeds that are potential founders of the American populations, including wild boar, Iberian, international and Chinese breeds. Results show that American village pigs are primarily of European ancestry, although the observed genetic landscape is that of a complex conglomerate. There was no correlation between genetic and geographical distances, neither continent wide nor when analyzing specific areas. Most populations showed a clear admixed structure where the Iberian pig was not necessarily the main component, illustrating how international breeds, but also Chinese pigs, have contributed to extant genetic composition of American village pigs. We also observe that many genes related to the cardiovascular system show an increased differentiation between altiplano and genetically related pigs living near sea level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The importance of the diet in relation to human health has increased the interest of consumers on nutraceuticals rich foods, and especially on fruits and vegetables. Berries are rich sources of a wide variety of antioxidant phenolics; these phytochemicals include flavonoids, stilbenes, tannins, and phenolic acids. Reactive oxidant species and free radicals are produced in an extensive range of physiological processes. In addition to the antioxidant defenses produced in the body, there are exogenous sources supplied by the diet; this is the case of berry fruits, among others. The insufficiency of antioxidant defense mechanisms is associated to the pathology of chronic disorders such as cardiovascular diseases, inflammation, and diabetes. Therefore, the enforcement of the latter mechanisms is of the utmost importance. The isolation and characterization of compounds that may delay the onset of aging is receiving intense research attention; some berry phenolics are being associated with this functional performance. Berry phenolics may also act as antimicrobials which may be of help in the control of the wild spectra of pathogens, in view of recent problems associated with antibiotic resistance. Most of the research works on the antioxidant activity of bioactive constituents of berries has been carried out using in vitro assays. In view of this, the human studies investigating the bioavailability and potential toxicity of phenolics are receiving more attention. Finally, we would like to emphasize the necessity of associating new plant breeding and genetic studies of berries with the expression and overexpression of compounds for human health and healthy aging. Starch is a polymer widely distributed in the nature and it is the principal component of cereals, tubers, legumes, and unripe fruits. Traditionally, starch has been isolated and used as raw material in diverse food products to produce or to improve specific functionalities and nowadays novel starches from unconventional sources have gained interest due to improved or due to different physicochemical and functional characteristics, especially for new food products. Recently, the potential nutraceutical characteristics of starchy products have increased the interest on this biopolymer. In this review, we describe the physicochemical and digestibility characteristics of starch present in diverse food crops namely maize and beans, and unconventional starch sources such as banana ( Musa paradisiaca L.), mango ( Mangifera indica L.), amaranth ( Amaranthus hypochondriacus), and barley ( Hordeum vulgare), among others. The starch after cooking, the storage of starchy products and the potential of starch isolated from unconventional sources to produce resistant starch-rich products using different treatments are emphasized. The setting for this retrospective cohort study was a specialised tuberculosis unit in Madrid, Spain. The objective was to describe the risk factors for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). The medical records of all patients admitted to the unit were reviewed retrospectively to identify factors associated with multidrug resistance. Patients with positive culture for M. tuberculosis and with available drug-susceptibility tests were included. The variables assessed were age, gender, country of origin, homelessness, alcohol consumption, intravenous drug use, methadone substitution therapy, contact with a tuberculosis patient, sputum smear, site of disease, previous tuberculosis treatment, HIV infection, history of imprisonment, diabetes mellitus and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Thirty patients with MDR-TB and 666 patients with non-MDR-TB were included from the years 1997 to 2006. The only factors associated with MDR-TB in multivariate analysis were previous tuberculosis treatment (OR: 3.44; 95% CI: 1.58–7.50; p = 0.003), age group 45–64 years (OR: 3.24; 95% CI: 1.34–7.81; p = 0.009) and alcohol abuse (OR: 0.12; 95% CI: 0.03 to 0.55; p = 0.003). In our study, patients who had had previous treatment for tuberculosis, who were 45–64 years of age or who had no history of alcohol abuse were more likely to have MDR-TB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Physico-chemical and nutritional composition from four different nopalitos (young cladodes from cacti): Blanco sin Espinas, Blanco con Espinas, Verde Valtierrilla (cultivated materials) and a wild material from the central region of México were studied at different sizes of harvesting. The first three are commercial crops. None of the tested materials exhibited superior characteristics in all of the evaluated parameters in relation to each one of them. In various cases properties of the wild crop were comparable, if not superior, to commercial ones. Some important changes were observed in total soluble solids, water content, texture, acidity and pH as affected by size of cladode and specific crop. Most cladode samples appear to be a good source of beta-carotene and lutein. The presence of these compounds is important for human nutraceutical purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An amaranth (Amaranthus hypochondriacus) 11S globulin cDNA, encoding one of the most important storage proteins (amarantin) of the seed, with a high content of essential amino acids, was used in the transformation of CIMMYT tropical maize genotype. Constructs contained the amarantin cDNA under the control of a tissue-specific promoter from rice glutelin-1 (osGT1) or a constitutive (CaMV 35S) promoter with and without the first maize alcohol dehydrogenase intron (AdH). Southern-blot analysis confirmed the integration of the amarantin cDNA, and copy number ranged from one to more than ten copies per maize genome. Western-blot and ultracentrifugation analyses of transgenic maize indicate that the expressed recombinant amarantin precursors were processed into the mature form, and accumulated stably in maize endosperm. Total protein and some essential amino acids of the best expressing maize augmented 32% and 8–44%, respectively, compared to non-transformed samples. The soluble expressed proteins were susceptible to digestion by simulated gastric and intestinal fluids, and it is suggested that they show no allergenic activity. To throw light on the expression of ripening-related genes in prickly pear (Opuntia sp.) fruits and on the possible role of the gaseous hormone ethylene in nonclimacteric fruit ripening, cDNA fragments that showed high homologies with 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) synthase and ACC oxidase cDNAs from other plants were cloned and partially characterized. Thus, the corresponding genes were accordingly named opaccs-1 and opacco-1, after Opuntia ACC synthase-1 and Opuntia ACC oxidase-1, respectively. Southern analysis suggests the presence of at least one copy of both genes, as well as other related homologous sequences in the Opuntia genome. Northern analysis of the opaccs-1 gene shows an enhanced expression in ripening fruit tissues, whereas opacco-1 expression is highly induced in ripe tissues with respect to the green fruits and mature cladodes. These results are in agreement with an active metabolic role of ethylene during nonclimacteric prickly pear fruit ripening. The lytic interactions of the nonionic surfactant dodecyl maltoside (DM) with liposomes formed by a mixture of lipids modeling the stratum corneum (SC) lipid composition were investigated. To this end, the surfactant to lipid molar ratios (Re) and the normalized bilayer/aqueous phase partition coefficients (K) were determined by monitoring the changes in the static light-scattering (SLS) of the system during solubilization. The fact that the free surfactant concentration was always similar to its critical micelle concentration indicates that the liposome solubilization was mainly ruled by formation of mixed micelles. In addition, the linear dependence established between the level of SLS and Re indicates a progressive incorporation of DM in the liposomes as well as the progressive formation of mixed micelles. DM showed in all cases lower bilayer activity (higher Re values) and greater affinity with vesicles (higher K values) than those reported for its interaction with phosphatidylcholine (PC) liposomes. Thus, whereas the SC lipid liposomes were more resistant to the action of this surfactant, its degree of partitioning into SC bilayers was higher throughout the solubilization process than that exhibited in PC vesicles. Comparison of the present Re values with those reported for the lytic interaction of dodecyl glucoside (DG) with SC liposomes reveals that in the case of DM the bilayer activity was more than three times higher than that for DG in spite of the identical alkyl chain length. Following a companion article, ground motion acceleration time historiesduring earthquakes can be described as realizations of non-stationarystochastic processes with evolutionary frequency content and instantaneousintensity. The parameters characterizing those processes can be handled asuncertain variables with probabilistic distributions that depend on themagnitude of each seismic event and the corresponding source-to-sitedistance. Accordingly, the generation of finite samples of artificial groundmotion acceleration time histories for earthquakes of given intensities isformulated as a two-stage Monte Carlo simulation process. The first stageincludes the simulation of samples of sets of the parameters of thestochastic process models of earthquake ground motion. The second stageincludes the simulation of the time histories themselves, given theparameters of the associated stochastic process model. In order to accountfor the dependence of the probability distribution of the latter parameterson magnitude and source-to-site distance, the joint conditional probabilitydistribution of these variables must be obtained for a given value of theground motion intensity. This is achieved by resorting to Bayes Theoremabout the probabilities of alternate assumptions.Two options for the conditional simulation of ground motion time historiesare presented. The more refined option makes use of all the informationabout the conditional distribution of magnitude and distance for thepurpose of simulating values of the statistical parameters of the groundmotion stochastic process models. The second option considers allprobabilities concentrated at the most likely combination of magnitude anddistance for each of the seismic sources that contribute significantly to theseismic hazard at the site of interest. The surfactant-to-lipid molar ratios (Re) and the normalized bilayer/aqueous phase partition coefficients ( K) were determined by monitoring the changes in the static light-scattering (SLS) of the system during solubilization. The fact that the free surfactant concentrations were always similar to their critical micelle concentrations indicates that the liposome solubilization was mainly ruled by the formation of mixed micelles. At the two interaction levels studied (100 and 0% SLS) the nonyl glucoside showed the highest ability to saturate and to solubilize liposomes (lowest Re values), whereas the dodecyl glucoside showed the highest degree of partitioning into liposomes or affinity with these structures (highest K values). Comparison of the data for octyl glucoside with that reported for the interaction of this surfactant with phosphatidylcholine (PC) liposomes shows that whereas the SC lipid liposomes were more resistant to the action of this surfactant (higher Re values), its degree of partitioning into SC bilayers was both in the saturation and solubilization of liposomes similar to that exhibited in PC vesicles (similar K values). An approach to generate artificial earthquakeaccelerograms on hard soil sites is presented. Eachtime-history of accelerations is considered as arealization of a non-stationary gaussian stochasticprocess, with statistical parameters depending onmagnitude and source-to-site distance. In order tolink the values of these parameters for each groundmotion record with the corresponding magnitude andsource-to-site distance, semi-empirical functionalrelations called generalized attenuationfunctions are determined. The set of realground-motion time histories used to obtain thesefunctions correspond to shocks generated at differentsources and recorded at different sites in thevicinity of the southern coast of Mexico. The resultsshow significant dispersion in the parameters of themodel adopted, which reflect that associated with thereal earthquakes included in the sample employed.The problem of conditional simulation of artificialacceleration time histories for prescribed intensitiesis briefly presented, but its detailed study is leftfor a companion paper. The criteria and modelsproposed are applied to generate two families ofartificial acceleration records for recurrenceintervals of 100 and 200 years at a specific sitelocated in the region under study. The results shownin this article correspond to acceleration timehistories recorded on firm ground for earthquakesgenerated at the subduction zone that runs along thesouthern coast of Mexico, and cannot be generalized tocases of earthquakes generated at other sources orrecorded at other types of local conditions. Thismeans that the methods and functional forms presentedhere are applicable to these other cases, but thevalues of the parameters that characterize thosefunctions may differ from those presented here. The role played by cholesteryl sulfate (Chol-sulf) in the solubilization of liposomes modeling the stratum corneum (SC) lipids by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was studied. We determined the surfactant-to-lipid molar ratios and the bilayer/aqueous phase surfactant partition coefficients of this interaction by varying the proportion of Chol-sulf, the relative proportions of the others lipids remaining constant. These parameters were determined by monitoring the changes in the static light scattering of the system during solubilization. The fact that the free surfactant concentration was always similar to its critical micelle concentration indicates that the liposome solubilization was mainly ruled by the formation of mixed micelles. The SDS ability to saturate and solubilize SC liposomes decreased as the proportion of Chol-sulf in the bilayers increased until a minimum was reached for a Chol-sulf proportion of about 15%. Inversely, the SDS partitioning into liposomes (or affinity with these bilayers) increased as the proportion of Chol-sulf increased until a maximum was reached at similar Chol-sulf proportions (10–15%). Hence, in these Chol-sulf proportions (similar to that existing in the intercellular lipids, which was 10%) the ability of SDS molecules to interact with liposomes exhibits a minimum despite their enhanced partitioning into liposomes. These effects may be related to the reported dependencies of the level of Chol-sulf on the abnormalities in the skin barrier function and on the SC intercellular cohesion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Corn smut caused by Ustilago maydis (DC) Corda on maize ( Zea mays L.) is characterized by gall (tumour) formation on aerial parts of the plant. Young galls on immature corn ears are called huitlacoche and are highly appreciated as a food delicacy. Several reports have suggested that production of the auxin indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) by U. maydis might be involved in tumour formation. Because strains showing defects in IAA biosynthesis (Iaa− phenotype) would be valuable in elucidating the role of IAA in pathogenicity, in a previous study we isolated and analysed several such mutants. In the present work, we have crossed a null Iaa− auxotrophic mutant with compatible wild-type strains. The main objective of the present work was to evaluate the pathogenicity of crosses involving wild-type and Iaa− strains, in order to examine its relation to IAA production. Significant differences were found in growth, IAA production and ability to survive in water suspension among wild-type and mutant progeny strains. In general, high levels of pathogenicity were associated to high levels of IAA production by the strains, which supports the hypothesis that U. maydis strains require the ability to produce IAA in order to induce tumours in the host. The capacity of the glycoprotein (GP) excreted by Pseudoalteromonas antarctica NF3 to protect phosphatidylcholine (PC) liposomes against the action of Triton X-100 was studied in detail. Increasing amounts of GP assembled with liposomes resulted in a linear increase in the effective surfactant-to-PC molar ratios needed to produce the same alterations in liposomes and in a linear fall in the surfactant partitioning between the bilayer and the aqueous phase. Thus, the higher the proportion of GP assembled with liposomes the lower the surfactant ability to alter the permeability of vesicles and the lower its affinity with these bilayer structures. In addition, increasing GP proportions resulted in a progressive increase in the free surfactant concentration ( SW) for the same surfactant–liposome interaction step. The fact that SW was always lower than the surfactant critical micelle concentration indicates that the interaction was mainly ruled by the action of surfactant monomers, regardless of the amount of GP assembled. Production of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) by four strains of the maize pathogen Ustilago maydis was analyzed. The fungus induces gall formation on its host plant and IAA production by U. maydis may be required as a pathogenicity or virulence factor. The study included the FB2 wild-type strain and the 103, 130FZ and 130FT mutants. Results show that treatment with clofibric acid, alone or in combination with UV light, can be used to obtain U. maydis strains with defective IAA production in vitro, as quantified with the Salkowski reagent and by HPLC. The strain with the lowest production was 130FT, and its peak IAA level represented only 16% of the highest value obtained for the FB2 wild-type strain (124 μg/ml). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The long-duration oxidation behavior of a pressureless liquid-phase-sintered (LPS) a-SiC with 10 vol% Y3Al5O12 additives was studied by furnace oxidation tests in ambient air at 1100 to 1450 °C. The oxidation of this LPS SiC ceramic was found to be passive throughout these temperatures due to the formation of oxide scales, with a change in the oxidation behavior occurring at 1350 °C. It was also found that the oxidation behavior is very complex, exhibiting two distinct stages at all temperatures: (i) initial nonparabolic oxidation, where the rate-limiting mechanism is the outward diffusion of Y3+ and Al3+ cations from the secondary intergranular phase into the oxide scale with the activation energy of the oxidation being 504 ± 32 kJ/mol, followed by (ii) parabolic oxidation below 1350 °C, where the rate-determining mechanism is the inward diffusion of oxygen through the oxide scale with the activation energy being 310 ± 47 kJ/mol, or paralinear oxidation at and above 1350 °C, where oxidation is controlled by some mixed reaction/diffusion process. The existence of two oxidation regimes reflects the progressive crystallization of the oxide scale during the oxidation. Finally, guidelines are provided for the design and fabrication of low-cost, highly oxidation-resistant LPS SiC or other LPS nonoxide ceramics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
