This paper reports the molecular organization and mechanical properties of electrospun, post-drawn polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers. Without post-drawing, the polymer chain was kinked and oriented in hexagonal crystalline structures. Immediate post-drawing in the semi-solid state disrupted the crystal structures and chain kink at maximum draw ratio. Structural re-orientation at maximum draw resulted in a 500% increase in Young's modulus and a 100% increase in ultimate tensile strength. By applying post-drawing to electrospinning it may be possible to obtain PAN fibers and PAN-derived carbon fibers with enhanced mechanical properties compared to available fabrication technologies. A simple and modified solvothermal method using oxalate precursor, used to synthesize Cd1−xNixO (x = 0.047, 0.102, and 0.163) nanoparticles and their phase structure, morphology, optical and magnetic properties, have been investigated. X-ray diffraction studies revealed that as-prepared Ni-doped CdO solid solutions are highly crystalline and stabilized in a monophasic cubic CdO structure. X-ray diffraction and ICP-MS studies confirmed the incorporation of Ni2+ in a CdO matrix. The average grain size was found to be 30, 15, and 11 nm, respectively, using transmission electron microscopic studies. High surface area in the range of 118–143 m2/g has been achieved for these solid solutions using the multipoint BET method, which increases on increasing Ni concentration in Cd lattice site. The optical band gap of these solid solutions shows red shift to the undoped CdO. Ni-doped CdO nanoparticles exhibit co-existence of paramagnetism and ferromagnetism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We review our work on combinatorial search and investigation of morphotropic phase boundaries (MPBs) in chemically substituted BiFeO3 (BFO). Utilizing the thin-film composition spread technique, we discovered that rare-earth (RE = Sm, Gd, and Dy) substitution into the A-site of the BFO lattice results in a structural phase transition from the rhombohedral to the orthorhombic phase. At the structural boundary, both the piezoelectric coefficient and the dielectric constant are substantially enhanced. It is also found that the observed MPB behavior can be universally described by the average A-site ionic radius as a critical parameter, indicating that chemical pressure effect due to substitution is the primary cause for the MPB behavior in RE-substituted BFO. Our combinatorial investigations were further extended to the A- and B-site cosubstituted BFO in the pseudoternary composition spread of (Bi1_xSmx)(Fe1_y,Scy,)O3. Clustering analysis of structural and ferroelectric property data of the fabricated pseudoternary composition spread reveals close correlations between the structural and ferroelectric properties. We show that the evolution in structural and ferroelectric properties is controlled solely by the A-site Sm substitution and not the B-site Sc substitution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study describes the synthesis of ZnMn2O4 nanoparticles with the spinel structure. These oxide nanoparticles are obtained from the decomposition of metal oxalate precursors synthesized by (a) the reverse micellar and (b) the coprecipitation methods. Our studies reveal that the shape, size and morphology of precursors and oxides vary significantly with the method of synthesis. The oxalate precursors prepared from the reverse micellar synthesis method were in the form of rods (micron size), whereas the coprecipitation method led to spherical nanoparticles of size, 40–50 nm. Decomposition of oxalate precursors at low temperature (∼ 450°C) yielded phase pure ZnMn2O4 nanoparticles. The size of the nanoparticles of ZnMn2O4 obtained from reverse micellar method is relatively much smaller (20–30 nm) as compared to those made by the co-precipitation (40–50 nm) method. Magnetic studies of nanocrystalline ZnMn2O4 confirm antiferro-magnetic ordering in the broad range of ∼ 150 K. The photocatalytic activity of ZnMn2O4 nanoparticles was evaluated using photo-oxidation of methyl orange dye under UV illumination and compared with nanocrystalline TiO2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sub-micron rods and spheres of cobalt succinate sesquihydrate and iron succinate trihydrate/pentahydrate respectively have been synthesized by the reverse micellar route. These precursors are an excellent source for the synthesis of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles. Cubes of (edge length ~ 150 nm) Fe3O4 and elongated particles of Fe2O3 (~ diameter of 200 nm) were obtained. The role of oxidation state of the metal ion in controlling the morphology of the nanostructured dicarboxylates has been investigated. Rods with shorter length were obtained when longer chain dicarboxylate was used as ligand. Heating in nitrogen atmosphere also provided pure Co and α-Fe nanoparticles. The Fe nanoparticles show nearly 100% superparamagnetism. Temperature-dependent magnetic studies show a Morin-like transition for Fe2O3 nanoparticles at 223 K and the Verwey transition at 115 K for Fe3O4 nanoparticles. Nanoparticles of complex manganites (viz. LaMnO3, La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 and La0.67Ca0.33MnO3) have been synthesized using the reverse micellar route. These manganites are prepared at 800°C and the monophasic nature of all the oxides has been established by powder X-ray diffraction studies. TEM studies show an average grain size of 68, 80 and 50 nm for LaMnO3, La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 and La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 respectively. Ferromagnetic ordering is observed at around 250 K for LaMnO3, 350 K for La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 and 200 K for La0.67Ca0.33MnO3.
