It is stated that Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (HT) is a risk factor for the development of Papillary Thyroid Cancer (PTC). However, the effect of HT on the coexistence of HT and PTC is still controversial. In this study, our aim is to investigate the effect of the presence of HT on clinicopathological data in patients with PTC. All 356 patients whose pathology was reported as PTC who were operated between 2015 and 2023 were included in the study. PTC patients were divided into 2 groups as those with and without HT. The effect of HT association on clinicopathological features was investigated. In 356 PTC patients, the rate of HT was 31.2%. PTC patients with HT had less multifocality (p < 0.05), more lymph node metastases (LNM) (p < 0.01) compared to PTC patients without HT. The presence of HT did not affect the bilaterality of the tumor, tumor diameter, lymphovascular invasion, or capsule invasion. While multifocality was observed less frequently in PTC patients with HT, lymph node metastasis rates were higher. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Morphology of the Meckel's diverticulum (MD) of broiler chicken was investigated using gross anatomical, histological and transmission electron microscopy techniques. Forty fertile eggs and 100 chicks of Marshall broiler chicken were used for the study. Samples were collected from 6 randomly selected embryos or chicks on embryonic days 14, 17 and 19, and post-hatch days 1, 3, 5, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42 and 56. The results showed that the mean lengths of the small intestine from the gizzard to the MD and from the MD to the ileocecal junction increased steadily with age. On embryonic days 14, 17 and 19, the poorly differentiated tunics of the MD were composed of lamina epithelialis mucosae and indistinct lamina propria mucosae as well as submucosal areas. The tunica muscularis exhibited loose islands of nascent smooth muscle fibres. Whereas on post-hatch day 1, the lamina epithelialis mucosae showed scanty microvilli and enterocytes with large cytoplasmic vacuoles, the MD of 3-day-old post-hatch chicks contained lymphatic tissues in the lamina propria mucosae. On post-hatch day 35, the lamina epithelialis mucosae demonstrated the presence of apoptotic cells while numerous lymphocytes at various stages of differentiation were observed within the lamina propria mucosae and tunica submucosa. In conclusion, the present study has provided clear structural evidence which shows that intense cellular proliferation occurs in the MD of broiler chicken between embryonic days 14 and 19. The value for lymphocytic infiltration (LI) has been increasingly recognized for tumor assessment. In breast cancer, however, the overall significance of LI remains poorly defined, probably due to its heterogeneity. A large cohort of breast cancer was evaluated for the degree of LI and its association with traditional pathologic factors, biomarker expression, and cancer subtypes. The number of CD8 cytotoxic effector and FoxP3 regulatory T cell (Treg) was evaluated in those cases with high LI. High LI was associated with negative ER and PR but positive HER2 and EGFR expression ( p < 0.001 for all). In ER-positive cancers, high LI was associated with poor prognostic features including higher grade, the presence of necrosis, and lymphovascular invasion (LVI) ( p = 0.007 for LVI and <0.001 for the others). Conversely, LI correlated with smaller tumor size, a good prognostic feature ( p = 0.046) in HER2+ ER-cancers. These observations suggested LI may show opposite prognostic values in different breast cancer subgroups. Interestingly, when the phenotype of LI in these subgroups was evaluated, a strong positive association with intratumoral accumulation of Treg was found in ER-positive cancers ( p = 0.003, Rs = 0.319), while the opposite was observed in HER2+ ER-cancers ( p < 0.001, Rs = −0.427). Also, in ER-positive cancers, positive associations between peri- and intra-tumoral distribution were found with both CD8 and Tregs (CD8: p < 0.001, Rs = 0.547; Treg: p = 0.001, Rs = 0.460). Nonetheless, in HER2+ ER-cancers, such strong association was found with CD8 ( p < 0.001, Rs = 0.766) but not Tregs. The results may implicate a differential intratumoral migration of LI in different subtypes of breast cancer. In summary, the clinical value of LI in breast cancers could be subtype-dependent. In ER-positive cancers, high LI correlated with biologic parameters associated with poor prognosis, whereas in HER2 positive cancers, LI correlated with biologic parameters of favorable prognosis. The incidence of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) seems to have increased over the last several decades. Since there is a lack of recent studies in the literature that evaluate this phenomenon on a histological basis, we aimed to assess the incidence of lymphocytic thyroid infiltration (LTI) in our large surgical patient collective over a 31-year period. In our study, a total of 1,050 patients who had undergone uni- or bilateral thyroid surgery for benign goiter were included (150 patients in each group, during 1979 to 2009). The stored histological sections of the removed thyroid specimens were re-analyzed, including routine grading of LTI severity on a scale of 0-4, according to Williams and Doniach. Positive correlations were seen for the incidences of LTI grading (0-4) (r = 0.077, p = 0.013) and HT (r = 0.044, p = 0.078) over the years. Furthermore, when comparing the years 1979-1989 and 1994-2009, i.e., before and after the second iodine prophylaxis had been introduced in Austria, a higher incidence of HT was found for the later years (2 out of 450, 0.4%, vs. 6 out of 600, 1.0%, respectively; p < 0.0001). The possibility of postsurgical hypothyroidism after hemithyroidectomy is no longer a new subject. Although many previous studies have mentioned posthemithyroidectomy hypothyroidism, the incidence and contributing factors for hypothyroidism remain uncertain. We intended to evaluate the incidence and the time of development of hypothyroidism after hemithyroidectomy and to analyze the relationship of posthemithyroidectomy hypothyroidism with preoperative biochemical parameters and postoperative histopathological findings. From February 2001 through December 2004, 287 consecutive cases of hemithyroidectomized patients were retrospectively analyzed; 136 of these patients were included in this study after the exclusion criteria were applied. The relationship between posthemithyroidectomy hypothyroidism and several parameters such as sex, age, preoperative free T4, TSH, microsomal antibody (Ab), thyroglobulin antibody (Ab) levels and lymphocytic infiltration of the resected gland was statistically analyzed. Postoperative hypothyroidism developed in 58 patients (42.6%). In hypothyroid group, 11 patients (19%) showed overt hypothyroidism and 47 patients (81%) showed subclinical hypothyroidism. Preoperative TSH value was significantly higher in the hypothyroid group (2.15 ± 1.30 μU/ml) compared to the euthyroid group (1.29 ± 0.9 μU/ml). Positive ratio of preoperative microsomal Ab and thyroglobulin Ab were significantly higher in hypothyroid group (38.9 and 41.9%) compared to euthyroid group (3.6 and 19.3%) ( P <0.05). In addition, patients with a higher grade of lymphocytic infiltration were found to have a higher probability of developing hypothyroidism. About 85% of postoperative hypothyroidism was detected between 1 and 6 months postoperatively. We might predict the possibility of developing the posthemithyroidectomy hypothyroidism especially in case of preoperatively positive microsomal antibody, thyroglobulin antibody and high-grade lymphocytic infiltration of the resected gland. Background: Intratumoral microvessel density (MVD) could be used as a prognostic factor in colorectal cancer. We retrospectively analyzed the value of microvessel count in predicting the clinical outcome of stage I and II (Dukes A and B) rectal cancer patients. Methods: Eighty-four patients who had undergone curative resection of lymph node-negative rectal cancer were included. Tumor type and differentiation, the depth of local invasion, venous invasion, the character of the invasive margin, and the degree of lymphocytic infiltration were evaluated for each tumor specimen. Immunohistochemical staining for the CD31 endothelial antigen was performed to highlight the microvessels. Results: The median value of MVD was 45 microvessels. Low MVD (microvessels ≤45) was observed in 41 patients (48.8%), and high MVD (>45) was found in 43 (51.2%). The presence of conspicuous lymphocytic infiltration was significantly associated with increased vessel density. With uni- and multivariate survival analysis MVD did not show any prognostic significance. The character of the invasive margin was the only parameter with independent prognostic value. Conclusions: MVD does not seem to provide any additional prognostic information when compared with standard histopathological parameters in lymph node-negative rectal cancer. Pronounced lymphocytic infiltration in parathyroid adenoma is rare, with only six previously reported cases in the literature. The aims of this study are to review the features and investigate the pathogenesis of this rare entity. Two solitary parathyroid adenomas having this feature were reported, and the clinicopathologic features of all the documented cases were reviewed. The nature of the lymphoid infiltrate and the presence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) were analyzed to unveil the pathogenesis of this infiltrate. One ademona was found in a 70-yr-old woman with primary hyperparathyroidism and valvular heart disease. The other was an autopsy finding in a 48-yr-old man who had presented with hypercalcemic crisis. The lymphoid cell population within the tumors was composed of B cells and different subsets of T cells. EBV was not detected in the infiltrates. The lymphocytic infiltrate in parathyroid adenoma is an unusual histologic entity. Its presence is unlikely to imply an autoimmune disorder. Immunohistochemical detection and quantification of CD3-and CD45RO-positive lymphocytes and CD68-positive cells in 75 thyroid carcinomas of follicular cell origin revealed rising levels for these parameters associated with dedifferentiation. A parallel trend towards reduction of vascularisation, determined as CD31-positive blood vessels, with decreasing differentiation became evident, statistically only significant when well-differentiated follicular and anaplastic carcinomas were compared. Positive correlations could be demonstrated between the density of CD68-, CD3-, and CD45RO-positive cells as well as between the density of CD68-, and CD3-, and CD45RO-positive cells and vascularisation. These correlations were expected, as the interaction of CD68-positive cells and T lymphocytes results in the production of angiogenesis factors, ultimately leading to better vascularisation of the tumour. Nevertheless, the tumour cells themselves are variously capable of producing angiogenic substances. The obvious lack of positive correlation between the density of tumour-infiltrating cells determined in this study and vascularisation, despite reduced vascularisation in less differentiated tumours that contained increasing numbers of tumour-infiltrating cells, seems to be due to functional heterogeneity of morphologically similar, tumours. Surgical specimens of lung cancers were examined immunopathologically for the expression of major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC-II) antigens in the tumor cells and their relationship to the lymphocytic infiltration. A lymphocytic infiltrate was frequently observed in the tumor tissue, though its intensity differed among the various histological types. MHC-II antigens were often demonstrated in tumors with a lymphocytic infiltrate. They were detected predominantly in the cytoplasm of tumor cells and to a lesser extent on the cell membranes. The emergence of the MHC-II-positive tumor cells was closely related to a local infiltration by lymphocytes including interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma)-producing T-cells. On the basis of the histological findings, an in vitro experiment was carried out. Foutypes of lung cancer cells were incubated with recombinant IFN-gamma in order to induce MHC-II antigens. MHC-II antigens (HLA-DR as well as HLA-DQ and HLA-DP antigens) were elicited in three cancer cell lines depending on the concentration of IFN-gamma. Immunoelectron microscopic study revealed that they were expressed on the surface of the cell membrane, though to a lesser extent than in the cytoplasm. It was considered that MHC-II antigens could be induced in some tumor cells in the immunological environment where IFN-gamma was secreted from T-cells and concentrated locally. Lymphocytes infiltrating tumor tissue are capable of androstenedione conversion, which was assessed from3H2O release from tritium-labeled androgen precursor of estrogens 1β-androstenedione. This capacity is higher in menopausal patients than in patients of reproductive age. A tendency to a positive correlation between the intensity of androstenedione conversion in lymphocytes and aromatase activity in tumor tissue is revealed.
