Satellite vegetation index (VI) products, such as normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and enhanced vegetation index (EVI), have been widely used. However, they are severely contaminated by clouds and other factors and provide false signals of the surface vegetation conditions. In this study, the new global seamless 250 m, eight-day NDVI and EVI products from 2000–2021 were developed from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) surface reflectance data using a long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network method. High-quality globally representative time series VI samples were constructed to train the model using a combination of the Savitzky-Golay filter (SG), Global LAnd Surface Satellite (GLASS) leaf area index (LAI) fitting and upper envelope methods. To evaluate the proposed method and the 250 m VI products, the MODIS VI product (MOD13Q1) was used for the inter-comparisons using four widely used VI reconstruction methods. Assuming that the MODIS VI data of high quality represents the true values, the root mean square error (RMSE) for NDVI and EVI generated by the LSTM model are 0.0734 and 0.0509, respectively. Electroactive biofilms (EABs) have aroused wide concern in waste treatment due to their unique capability of extracellular electron transfer with solid materials. The combined effect of different operating conditions on the formation, microbial architecture, composition, and metabolic activity of EABs is still unknown. In this study, the impact of three different factors (anode electrode, substrate concentration, and resistance) on the acclimation and performance of EABs was investigated. The results showed that the shortest start-up time of 127.3 h and highest power density of 0.84 W m−2 were obtained with carbon brush as electrode, low concentration of substrate (1.0 g L−1), and 1000 Ω external resistance (denoted as N1). The EABs under N1 condition also represented strongest redox capacity, lowest internal resistance, and close arrangement of bacteria. Moreover, the EABs cultured under different conditions both showed similar results, with direct electron transfer (DET) dominated from EABs to anode. Microbial community compositions indicated that EABs under N1 condition have lowest diversity and highest abundance of electroactive bacteria (46.68%). Higher substrate concentration (3.0 g L−1) promoted the proliferation of some other bacteria without electroactivity, which was adverse to EABs. The metabolic analysis showed the difference of genes related to electron transfer (cytochrome C and pili) and biofilm formation (xap) of EABs under different conditions, which further demonstrated the higher electroactivity of EABs under N1. A heat transfer model for covers in steel continuous casting process has been established. In the model, the boundary temperature of bloom is firstly calculated by a calibrated three dimensional heat transfer model for continuous casting strand. The cover model has been developed based on heat transfer and surface to surface radiation, and most important, the cover effect is evaluated by specially designed probes placed close to the bloom surface. Then the influences of cover's thermo-physical properties and geometry have been fully studied, including the emissivity, thermal conductivity, specific heat, size, shape and structure. And then some principles for cover design have been presented. According to the numerical model and analytical analysis, the final emissivity reduction of cover is determined by cover's emissivity, bloom's emissivity, the gap between bloom and cover, and cover's thermal conductivity. Besides, the transient time is proportional to the cover's density, cover's specific heat and cover's thickness. Finally, the cover model has been applied to improve the cover effect and improve the heat transfer model of strand. Results indicate that the improved model is much better agreeing with the measurements, by reducing the maximum error from ± 30 °C to ± 16 °C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research on the impact of microplastics on crops has gradually attracted wide attention, but most of the current research focuses on the impact of nano-microplastics on crops by hydroponics. To make the impact of soil microplastics on crop growth more consistent with the natural state, we selected three types of microplastics (polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene (PE), and polystyrene (PS), with particle sizes smaller than 13 μm) present in agricultural soil and treated cucumber plants with two microplastic concentrations (0.05 g kg−1 and 0.5 g kg−1). Using the soil culture method, we investigated the influence of microplastics on the growth and physiological and biochemical characteristics of cucumber. The results showed that both concentrations of PVC, PE, and PS resulted in reduced fresh and dry weights of the underground parts of the cucumber and significantly promoted their absorption of the mineral element Zn. However, there were no significant effects on the fluorescence origin (F0) and the dissipated light energy of the PS unit reaction center (DI0/RC). Both concentrations of PVC suppressed the gene expression of the four antioxidant enzymes (SOD, POD, CAT, and APX). PVC and PS significantly increased the contents of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and carotenoids. Our study confirmed that the decrease in net photosynthetic efficiency (Pn) of cucumber leaves is caused by the decrease in water use efficiency (WUE) caused by the increase in the transpiration rate (Tr) of cucumber plants. Photocaged fluorophores with photoactivatable characteristics presented important applications in imaging the biological structures and processes. Taking advantage of their super-resolution imaging merits to manipulate and visualize anti-cancer treatment is always a goal of modern clinical medicine. Traditional photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a noninvasive treatment but limited in intracellular oxygen content. Type I PDT and photoacid therapy (PAT) are two effective supplements of traditional PDT especially in hypoxic condition. Herein, a novel white-light-driven fluorescence switch (7H-dibenzo[c,g]carbazol-7-yl)(2-iodophenyl)methanone (2IB) was designed and synthesized as an unprecedent "all in one" platform for stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy (STORM) imaging guided Type I/II PDT and PAT. The experimental and theoretical studies revealed that the working mechanism is based on two competing paths under excitation: photosensitization and photocyclization reaction. Efficient intersystem crossing (ISC) ensured the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) for PDT, while low energy barrier facilitated the photocyclization reaction that simultaneously yielded emissive fluorophores (2IBC) and H+ for super-resolution imaging and photoacid, respectively. Impressively, the fluorescent intensity of mitochondria-targeted 2IBC was positively correlated with treatment efficacy, which is beneficial to spatiotemporally visualized therapeutic process and outcome. As a result, superior anti-tumor performance was achieved in vitro and in vivo. This contribution provided a multifunctional nanodrug paradigm for multimode cancer diagnosis and treatment. Compact components are prone to failure at brazed joints. A comprehensive understanding of the effect of brazing temperature on the metallurgical reactions and microstructure evolution of 316L/BNi-2 brazed joints will provide support for optimization of the brazing process and improving joints strength. In this paper, the brazing process was carried out at 966°C 991°C, 1033°C, 1065°C, 1100°C, 1137°C and 1170°C in a vaccum furnace. The morphology and crystal structure of different zones of the brazed joints including athermal solidification zone (ASZ), isothermal solidification zone, and diffusion-affected zone (DAZ) were investigated. Results show that the DAZ begins to form, and the Ni3B, Ni3Si, CrB, and γ-Ni in the ASZ gradually coarsen below 1033°C. When the temperature reaches 1065°C, the filler alloy completely liquidizes. The boron in the filler alloy diffuses into the base metal, resulting in isothermal solidification. The residual liquid phase generates binary and ternary eutectic reactions. According to TEM patterns analysis in the DAZ, borides, and carbon-boride are mainly distributed on grain boundaries and within grains, respectively. In addition, M5B3 boride in the DAZ gradually transforms into M2B boride due to its better thermodynamic stability. Above 1170°C, the borides in the DAZ partly dissolve, and meanwhile, the matrix transforms from martensite to austenite, forming the alternating distribution of austenite and boride. To solve the problem of the low added value Zn-containing rotary hearth furnace (RHF) dust, two deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were employed, such as choline chloride-urea (ChCl-urea) and choline chloride-oxalic acid dihydrate (CC—OA) solvent and Zn-containing RHF dust (water-washed) as the research target. Then, we prepared ZnO nanoparticles using two DESs or their combination, namely, ChCl-urea (Method A), CC—OA (Method B), first CC—OA and then ChCl-urea (Method B-A) and first ChCl-urea and then CC-OA (Method A-B), respectively. The effects of these methods on the properties of as-obtained precursors and ZnO nanoparticles were investigated in detail. The results indicated that the precursor obtained by Method A was Zn4CO3(OH)6·H2O, and those by Methods B, B-A, and A-B were all ZnC2O4·2H2O. Moreover, the decomposition steps of the last three methods were similar. The ZnO contents of 95.486%, 99.768%, 99.733%, and 99.76% were obtained by Methods A, B, B-A, and A-B, respectively. Methods A, B, and B-A led to the formation of spherical and agglomerated ZnO nanoparticles with normal size distributions, where Method B showed the best distribution with an average diameter 25 nm. The influence of direct current interference on the corrosion behavior of HRB400 and HRB400M steel bars in simulated concrete solution was studied using methods such as weight loss experiment, electrochemical experiment, surface technology and product analysis. The research results showed that with the increase of DC interference voltage, the corrosion rates of HRB400 and HRB400M steel bars would increase. The corrosion resistance of HRB400M steel bars was better than HRB400 steel bars under the experimental conditions. In addition, direct current interference could cause damage to the corrosion product layer on the surface of HRB400 steel bars and HRB400M steel bars. And the corrosion form and corrosion product types of HRB400 and HRB400M steel bars would be affected by direct current interference. The main corrosion products of HRB400 steel bars included γ-FeOOH and Fe2O3 when it was not interfered by DC. When DC interference was applied, the main corrosion products included Fe3O4 and Fe2O3. The corrosion products on the surface of HRB400M steel bars were mainly Fe3O4 and Fe2O3, and the types of products increased to form Cr2O3 and MnFe2O4. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this study was to evaluate relationship with aggregation, secondary structures and gel properties of pork myofibrillar protein with different sodium chloride (1%, 2% and 3%). When the sodium chloride increased from 1 to 3%, the active sulfhydryl, surface hydrophobicity, hardness and cooking yield of myofibrillar protein were increased significantly (p < 0.05), the particle size, total sulfhydryl and Zeta potential were decreased significantly (p < 0.05), these meant the aggregations of pork myofibrillar protein were decreased. The changes of proteins aggregation induced the strongest intensity band of Amide I shifted up from 1660 cm−1 to 1661 cm−1, meanwhile, the β-sheet structure content was increased significantly (p < 0.05) with the sodium chloride increased. From the above, the lower proteins aggregation and higher β-sheet structure content could improve the water holding capacity and texture of pork myofibrillar protein gel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) eradication can reduce the prevalence of gastric cancer. However, whether H. pylori eradication therapy should be performed in infected patients, especially in asymptomatic cases, is still controversial.Aims: The aims of this study were to determine whether H. pylori screening and eradication could prevent gastric cancer in a cost-effective way, and further whether eradication therapy should be administered to asymptomatic individuals.Methods: Cost-effectiveness analysis was performed using a Markov model. We established two groups, each with 10,000 hypothetical Chinese individuals at the age of 40 years. Clinical outcomes and cost of H. pylori eradication were compared between the eradication and control groups.Results: There was a lower morbidity with gastric cancer in the eradication group than in the control group, which was most significant after running the model for 15 years. The eradication group experienced an average of 34.64 quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) per person, and the average cost was US $1706.52 per person. The control group exhibited an average of 32.63 QALYs per person, and the average cost was US $2045.10 per person. The cost-effectiveness analysis showed that eradication saved $1539 per LY per person and $168.45 per QALY per person.Conclusions: H. pylori screening and eradication therapy effectively reduces the morbidity of gastric cancer and cancer-related costs in asymptomatic infected individuals. We live in a world where physical threats, to ourselves and to our loved ones, are made salient every single day in the news and in the entertainment that we consume. Our research provides initial evidence that consumers survive in such a world by purchasing luxury brands to act as safety shields against these threats. This is because consumers derive symbolic safety value from luxury brands even when no functional safety features are relevant for the product category in which the brand operates. Thus, we hypothesize that when need for safety is likely salient (such as, after facing a physical safety threat), consumers are likely to show an increased preference for luxury brands, given the associations of luxury brands with safety. A new low-cost corrosion-resistant rebar (HRB400R) was designed and fabricated by chromium micro-alloying. The effects of Cr on the passivation and corrosion behavior of this rebar in the simulated concrete pore solutions were studied systematically, and its improved corrosion resistance was revealed. In the Cl-free saturated Ca(OH) solution, the HRB400R rebar presented nearly the same passive film and similar passivation ability compared to the common carbon steel rebar. In the long-term immersion corrosion test in the Cl-contained Ca(OH) solution, the HRB400R rebar presented improved corrosion resistance and obvious longer passivation-maintaining period. Micro-alloying of Cr element in the rebar matrix enhanced its corrosion resistance against Cl-attack and retarded the corrosion initiation in the matrix. In the alkaline NaCl salt spraying test, the HRB400R rebar also presented obviously lower mass-loss rate. The enrichment of Cr element in the rust layer improved its retardant effect to the penetration of aggressive medium, and decreased the corrosion propagation rate of the rebar. A comprehensive study was conducted to evaluate the structural changes of meat and protein of pork batters produced by chopping or beating process through the phase-contrast micrograph, laser light scattering analyzer, scanning electronic microscopy and Raman spectrometer. The results showed that the shattered myofibrilla fragments were shorter and particle-sizes were smaller in the raw batter produced by beating process than those in the chopping process. Compared with the raw and cooked batters produced by chopping process, modifications in amide I and amide III bands revealed a significant decrease of α-helix content and an increase of β-sheet, β-turn and random coils content in the beating process. The changes in secondary structure of protein in the batter produced by beating process was thermally stable. Moreover, more tyrosine residues were buried, and more gauche-gauche-trans disulfide bonds conformations and hydrophobic interactions were formed in the batter produced by beating process. Enhancement of heat-affected zone toughness of a weight percentage of 0.014 pct Ti-bearing low carbon steel by TiN particle was investigated. An increase in nitrogen weight percentage from 0.0031 to 0.0083 pct results in increasing of number density of TiN precipitates from 4 × 10 to 3 × 10/mm, and reduces prior austenite grain size from 850 to 350 μm with a soaking of 1673 K (1400 °C) for 2000 seconds. Effective refinement of austenite grain prohibits formation of ferrite side plate and/or upper bainite, and densely distributed TiN particles promote intra-granular ferrite formation, which is accompanied by an increase of 40 K to 60 K (40 °C to 60 °C) in austenite decomposition temperature during continuous cooling process. The changes in transformed products improved impact toughness of heat-affected zone efficiently, ex., increase absorbed energy of less than 42 J to more than 320 J with a simulated t of 550 seconds. Olive fruit dreg (OFD), waste from olive softdrink processing, has caused disposal problems. Nevertheless, OFD is a good source of functional ingredients, such as phenolic compounds. This study investigated the extraction conditions of phenolic compounds from OFD by using subcritical water (SCW) extraction method, antioxidant activity of SCW extracts, and components of phenolic compounds by LC-MS. SCW extraction experiments were performed in a batch stainless steel reactor at temperatures ranging from 100 to 180 °C at residence time of 5 to 60 min, and at solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:20 to 1:60. Higher recoveries of phenolic compounds [37.52 ± 0.87 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g, dry weight (DW)] were obtained at 160 °C, solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:50, and extract time of 30 min than at 2 h extraction with methanol (1.21 ± 0.16 mg GAE/g DW), ethanol (0.24 ± 0.07 mg GAE/g DW), and acetone (0.34 ± 0.01 mg GAE/g DW). The antioxidant activities of the SCW extracts were significantly stronger than those in methanol extracts at the same concentration of total phenolic contents. LC-MS analysis results indicated that SCW extracts contained higher amounts of phenolic compounds, such as chlorogenic acid, homovanillic acid, gallic acid, hydroxytyrosol, quercetin, and syringic acid. SCW at 160 °C, 30 min, and solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:50 may be a good substitute of organic solvents, such as methanol, ethanol, and acetone to recover phenolic compounds from OFD. OBJECTIVES:The precise prevalence and risk factors for the development of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in nonobese adults remains unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of NAFLD and risk factors for its development in a nonobese Chinese population.METHODS:We firstly investigated the prevalence and factors associated with the presence of NAFLD in nonobese (body mass index (BMI) <25 kg/m2) Chinese subjects via a cross-sectional study, and then analyzed the risk factors for the development of NAFLD via a subsequent prospective 5-year follow-up of the same population.RESULTS:A total of 6,905 nonobese subjects were enrolled in the cross-sectional study. Baseline evaluation revealed that the prevalence of NAFLD was 7.27%. A total of 5,562 subjects who were free of NAFLD at baseline completed the follow-up study, and 494 (8.88%) had developed NAFLD during the 5-year follow-up. Further analyses revealed that age, gender, BMI, waist circumference, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, serum uric acid, hemoglobin, and platelet count were independently associated with the presence and development of NAFLD.CONCLUSIONS:NAFLD is prevalent in the nonobese Chinese population, and a substantial proportion of subjects developed NAFLD over the 5-year follow-up period. Aim:To investigate the effects of 7 novel 1-ferrocenyl-2-(5-phenyl-1H-1,2,4-triazol-3-ylthio) ethanone derivatives on human lung cancer cells in vitro and to determine the mechanisms of action.Methods:A549 human lung cancer cells were examined. Cell viability was analyzed with MTT assay. Cell apoptosis and senescence were examined using Hoechst 33258 and senescence-associated-β-galactosidase (SA-β-gal) staining, respectively. LDH release was measured using a detection kit. Cell cycle was analyzed using a flow cytometer. Intracellular ROS level was measured with the 2′,7′-dichlorodihydrofluorescein probe. Phosphorylation of p38 was determined using Western blot.Results:Compounds 5b, 5d, and 5e (40 and 80 μmol/L) caused significant decrease of A549 cell viability, while other 4 compounds had no effect on the cells. Compounds 5b, 5d, and 5e (80 μmol/L) induced G1-phase arrest (increased the G1 population by 22.6%, 24.23%, and 26.53%, respectively), and markedly increased SA-β-gal-positive cells. However, the compounds did not cause nuclear DNA fragmentation and chromatin condensation in A549 cells. Nor did they affect the release of LDH from the cells. The compounds significantly elevated the intracellular ROS level, decreased the mitochondrial membrane potential, and increased p38 phosphorylation in the cells. In the presence of the antioxidant and free radical scavenger N-acetyl-L-cysteine (10 mmol/L), above effects of compounds 5b, 5d, and 5e were abolished.Conclusion:The compounds 5b, 5d, and 5e cause neither apoptosis nor necrosis of A549 cells, but exert anti-cancer effect via inducing G1-phase arrest and senescence through ROS/p38 MAP-kinase pathway. Noroviruses (NoVs) cause gastroenteritis in all age groups. To investigate an acute gastroenteritis outbreak in Shenzhen, South China, we analyzed the presence of NoVs in fecal specimens and drinking water samples. Viral RNAs were extracted from fecal suspensions and water concentrates made by membrane adsorption-elution, and NoV was detected by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Among the 43 diseased workers at the two factories and one construction site, NoVs were detected in 19 out of 28 stool specimens (68%) and 3 out of 16 water samples (19%). Importantly, the six NoV strains identified from the water and the stool samples share over 99% sequence identity and all belong to GII 4 viruses. Epidemiological survey also identified a water pipe breakage possibly causing the water contamination, and confirmed that the contaminated drinking water largely contributed to the NoV gastroenteritis outbreak. To our knowledge, this is the first time that a viral concentration and detection method for waterborne NoV is applied to a gastroenteritis outbreak in China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to improve the video quality of transmission with data loss, a spatial and temporal error concealment method was proposed, which considered both the state information of the network and the perceptual weight of the video content. The proposed method dynamically changed the reliability weight of the neighboring macroblock, which was used to conceal the lost macroblocks according to the packet loss rate of the current channel state. The perceptual weight map was utilized as side information to do weighted pixel interpolation and side-match based motion compensation for spatial and temporal error concealment, respectively. And the perceptual weight of the neighboring macroblocks was adaptively modified according to the perceptual weight of the lost macroblocks. Compared with the method used in H.264 joint model, experiment results show that the proposed method performs well both in subjective video quality and objective video quality, and increases the average peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of the whole frame by about 0.4 dB when the video bitstreams are transmitted with packets loss. We propose a novel prioritized intra refresh method for the wireless video communication. The proposed method considers the characteristics of the human visual system, the error-sensitivity of the bitstream, and the state of the time-varying wireless channel jointly. An expected perceptual distortion model was used to adjust the intra refresh rate adaptively. This model consists of the perceptual weight map based on an attention model, the bit error probability map based on bitstream size, and the dynamic channel state information (CSI). Experimental results indicate that, compared with other intra refresh methods that consider only the content of the video or the CSI, the proposed method improves the average peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of the whole frame by about 0.5 dB, and improves the average PSNR of the attention-area by about 0.8 dB. ADMSCs were isolated from subcutaneous adipose tissue, characterized and cultured in vitro. GFP-labeled ADMSCs can grow and proliferate well on the Atelocollagen scaffolds, and induced by 5-aza the cells can differentiate into cardio-like cells. 3D cultured ADMSCs on Atelocollagen scaffolds were transplanted into mice ischemia myocardium, and have good biocompatibility with host cardio tissue. The homeodomain transcription factor Nkx2.5/Csx is critically essential for heart specification, morphogenesis, and homeostasis. Acetylation/deacetylation is important for the localization, stability and activation of transcription factors. It remains unknown how Nkx2.5 is deacetylated and how Nkx2.5 acetylation determines its activity. In this study, we provide evidence that the NAD+-dependent class III protein deacetylase SIRT1 deacetylates Nkx2.5 in cardiomyocytes and represses the transcriptional activity of Nkx2.5. We show that SIRT1 interacts with the C-terminus of Nkx2.5 and deacetylates Nkx2.5 at lysine 182 in the homeodomain. The mutation of Nkx2.5 at lysine 182 reduces its transcriptional activity. Furthermore, SIRT1 inhibits the transcriptional activity of Nkx2.5 and represses the expression of its target genes partly by reducing Nkx2.5 binding to its co-factors, including SRF and TBX5. Taken together, these findings demonstrate that SIRT1 deacetylates Nkx2.5 and inhibits the transcriptional activity of Nkx2.5. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Whether excessive consumption triggers the intergenerational transmission of poverty, as well as the role of residents’ cognition in family thriving, is still unclear in the literature. By adopting the structural equation model and the hierarchical regression method, we empirically tested the impact of excessive consumption and intergenerational transmission of poverty on the family thriving. We found that: first, the stronger the excessive consumption of Chinese residents are, the less helpful for them to achieve family thriving; the stronger the intra- and inter-generational transmission of poverty of Chinese residents are, the less likely for them to achieve family thriving. Second, excessive consumption reduces residents’ demands on family thriving by promoting the degree of intra-generational or inter-generational transmission of poverty. Third, the effect of achieving family thriving by reducing the intra- or inter-intergenerational transmission of poverty is evident in highly education-cognitive people. Our research provides insight into how excessive consumption affects the intergenerational transmission of poverty and the family thriving.
