Purpose: To evaluate the effect of EVO+ Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) implantation on the iridocorneal angle pigmentation and structures. Methods: Myopic refractive surgery candidates who underwent posterior chamber EVO+ ICL implantation were evaluated preoperatively and 3 and 6 months postoperatively. High-resolution images of the iridocorneal angle (nasal, superior, temporal and inferior quadrants) were acquired during gonioscopy. A masked observer, blinded to study visits and patients' information, evaluated the angle width, apparent iris root insertion, iris configuration, and trabecular meshwork pigmentation according to the Spaeth scale in two different occasions. The intra-rater reliability was estimated using the weighted Gwet's Agreement Coefficient (AC2). Differences between visits were analyzed using the Cochran Q test or the Friedman test. Results: Twenty-one patients (13 females and 8 males) aging 31.3 ± 6.3 years old were recruited. The intra-rater reliability of gonioscopy assessment was excellent for every parameter assessed (AC2 ≥ 0.97). No significant differences were found among the study visits for any quadrant in the angle width (p ≥ 0.74), apparent iris root insertion (p ≥ 0.22), iris configuration (p ≥ 0.21) and trabecular meshwork pigmentation (p ≥ 0.24). Mean pigmentation of trabecular meshwork for the four quadrants did not vary either among visits (p = 0.25). Conclusions: The EVO+ ICL implantation after uneventful procedures appears not to clinically affect the iridocorneal angle pigmentation and/or structures during a short-medium follow-up using gonioscopy assessment. Purpose: To assess the relationship between anterior chamber depth (ACD) and lens thickness (LT), as well as its three main components (anterior and posterior cortex and nucleus thickness), in cataractous and non-cataractous eyes, depending on the axial length (AxL). Methods: Anterior and posterior cortex and nucleus thickness of the crystalline lens, ACD, and AxL were measured using optical low-coherence reflectometry in cataractous and non-cataractous eyes. They were also classified into hyperopia, emmetropia, myopia, and high myopia, depending on AxL; thus, eight subgroups were created. A minimum sample size of 44 eyes (of 44 patients) for each group was recruited. Linear models were fitted for the whole sample and each AxL subgroup to assess if there were differences in the relationships between the crystalline lens variables and ACD, including age as a covariate. Results: Three hundred seventy cataract patients (237 females, 133 males) and 250 non-cataract controls (180 females, 70 males), aged 70.5 ± 9.4 and 41.9 ± 15.5 years, respectively, were recruited. The mean AxL, ACD, and LT for the cataractous and non-cataractous eyes were 23.90 ± 2.05, 24.11 ± 2.11, 2.64 ± 0.45, and 2.91 ± 0.49, 4.51 ± 0.38, 3.93 ± 0.44 mm, respectively. The inverse relationship of LT, anterior and posterior cortex, and nucleus thickness with ACD was not significantly (p ≥ 0.26) different between cataractous and non-cataractous eyes. Further subclassification of the sample depending on AxL showed that the inverse relationship between the posterior cortex and ACD was no longer significant (p > 0.05) for any non-cataractous AxL group. LT, anterior and posterior cortex, and nucleus thickness was not significantly (p ≥ 0.43) different between cataractous and non-cataractous eyes for the whole sample, and all AxL groups after adjusting for age. Conclusions: The presence of cataracts does not modify the inverse relationship of the LT, anterior and posterior cortex, and nucleus with ACD. And this relationship does not seem to depend importantly on AxL. Besides, the possible differences in LT, anterior and posterior cortex, and nucleus between cataractous and non-cataractous eyes may not be caused by lens opacification, but possibly by the progressive lens growth due to aging. Purpose: To assess whether the postoperative outcomes of the implantation of an EVO + implantable collamer lens (ICL) in one eye can be used as a predictor of the vault of the fellow eye, and to evaluate the vault changes of the implantation in both eyes during the postoperative period. Methods: A prospective study including 40 eyes of 20 patients with a bilateral EVO + ICL implantation was performed. Subjects were evaluated before the surgery and 1 day, 1 week and 1, 3 and 6 months postoperatively. Central vault was assessed using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. The inter-eye and follow-up analyses were performed using lineal models and the Bland–Altman method. Results: The vault of the first implanted eye at the 1-day visit highly predicts the vault of the second eye (R2 =.87; P <.001); the mean inter-eye difference was − 0.95 μm, and the superior and inferior limits of agreement were −50.27 μm and 148.37 μm, respectively. This relationship was maintained during the medium-term follow-up, not finding differences in the slopes among visits (P ≥.09). A progressive decrease of vault was found during the follow-up (P <.001). Larger vault change 6 months after the surgery was associated with higher vault 1 day after the ICL implantation (R2 =.19;P =.005). Conclusion: One-day postoperative vault in the first eye can help to predict the optimal ICL sizing in the second eye. Vault tends to decrease during the first 6 months after EVO + ICL implantation. The aim of this research was to test the effect of training impure tact versus pure tact and intraverbals on the emergence of new verbal operants (impure tacts), thus establishing a conceptual and methodological differentiation on these operants. This was done by varying the training order of intraverbal or impure tact to analyze and confirm whether or not impure tact is the mere sum of pure tact plus intraverbal and therefore has different functions and consequences in learning. An experiment was conducted with 30 participants randomly assigned to three groups. In Group 1, pure tact plus intraverbal and then impure tact were trained. In Group 3 the training order of these operants was counterbalanced. Group 2 was the control group, training only pure tact plus intraverbal. After the training phases, the emergence of impure tacts was tested. The results of this research indicate that the training of impure tacts favors the emergence of new impure tacts to a greater extent than the training of pure tact plus intraverbal and that they therefore have different functions. It is also shown that variation in the order of presentation of the type of training influences the subsequent emergence of new operants (impure tacts), so that creating a previous history of learning in impure tacts favors emergence even when the intraverbal alone is subsequently trained. Spatial missions such as the Kepler mission, and the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission, have encouraged data scientists to analyze light curve datasets. The purpose of analyzing these data is to look for planet transits, with the aim of discovering and validating exoplanets, which are planets found outside our Solar System. Furthermore, transiting exoplanets can be better characterized when light curves and radial velocity curves are available. The manual examination of these datasets is a task that requires big quantities of time and effort, and therefore is prone to errors. As a result, the application of machine learning methods has become more common on exoplanet discovery and categorization research. This survey presents an analysis on different exoplanet transit discovery algorithms based on machine learning, some of which even found new exoplanets. The analysis of these algorithms is divided into four steps, namely light curve preprocessing, possible exoplanet signal detection, and identification of the detected signal to decide whether it belongs to an exoplanet or not. We propose a model to create synthetic datasets of light curves, and we compare the performance of several machine learning models used to identify transit exoplanets, with inputs preprocessed with and without using the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT). Our experimental results allow us to conclude that multiresolution analysis in the time-frequency domain can improve exoplanet signal identification, because of the characteristics of light curves and transiting exoplanet signals. Purpose: To compare specular microscopy (Topcon SP-3000P, Topcon Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) and ultrasound (US) technology when evaluating central corneal thickness (CCT) prior to and after phacoemulsification. Methods: Corneal edema was assessed in phacoemulsification patients due to senile cataract by measuring CCT preoperatively and 1 day, 1 month, and 3 months postoperatively. Bland-Altman analysis was performed to assess interchangeability between pachymetry techniques for each visit. Repeated measures analysis of variance was performed to evaluate variation in CCT agreement depending on the degree of corneal edema. Results: One hundred and eighteen patients aged 73.9 ± 10.1 years were recruited. Topcon SP-3000P provided significant ( p < 0.0001) lower CCT values than US with and without induced corneal edema. Mean differences between CCT techniques for baseline, 1 day, 1 month and 3 months after cataract surgery were −28.9 ± 22.6, −30.5 ± 41.4, −32.3 ± 16.2 and −33.0 ± 16.9 μm, respectively. The systematic bias observed was not significantly different among the 4 visits (p = 0.59). The estimated limits of agreement (based on 1.96 standard deviation) were substantial, being 90.5, 165.8, 64.9 and 67.5 um at baseline, 1 day and 1 and 3 months. Conclusions: Topcon SP-3000P provides similar systematic bias in comparison with US technique for CCT measurements regardless of the degree of corneal edema after phacoemulsification, which should be reduced after applying a constant calibration adjustment of ∼30 μm. Background: The aim of this work is to assess a previously described slit-lamp biomicroscopy-based method (SLBM) for measuring pupil diameter and compare it to Colvard infrared pupillometry (CIP). Methods: Two examiners performed three repeated measurements with each instrument in 40 healthy eyes. We determined the agreement of SLBM and CIP, intraobserver and interobserver repeatabilities, and interobserver concordance (kappa) and SLBM ability for detecting pupil sizes over 6.0 mm. Results: The mean (±standard deviation [SD]) pupil diameter was 5.81 ± 0.70 mm with SLBM and 6.26 ± 0.68 mm with CIP ( p = 0.01) averaging both examiner's results. Mean differences between the SLBM and CIP were -0.60 mm and -0.30 mm for each examiner using the average of the three readings ( p = 0.02), and they were very similar using the first reading. Intraobserver reproducibility: the width of the 95% LoA ranged from 1.79 to 2.30 mm. The ICCs were 0.97 and 0.92 for SLBM, and 0.96 and 0.90 for CIP. Interobserver reproducibility: the width of the LoA ranged from 1.82 to 2.09 mm. Kappa statistics were 0.39 and 0.49 for the first and mean SLBM readings, respectively, and 0.45 for both the first and mean CIP readings. Sensitivity and specificity of SLBM for detection of pupils larger than 6 mm ranged from 55.56% to 73.68% and from 76.19% to 95.45%, respectively. The best trade-off between sensitivity and specificity ranged from 5.4 mm to 6.2 mm. Conclusions: Although the SLBM is quite repeatable, it underestimates mesopic pupil size and shows a too wide range of agreement with CIP. SLBM shows low sensitivity in detecting pupils larger than 6 mm, which may be misleading when planning anterior segment surgery. Previous grading-consensus training strategies may increase interrater reproducibility, and compensation for the systematic underestimation could improve accuracy of the SLBM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We characterised the anti- Vibrio parahaemolyticus (anti- V. parahaemolyticus) marine bacteria DIT09, DIT44 and DIT46 isolated from the intertidal mussel Perumytilus purpuratus. The 16S rRNA gene sequences identify a Pseudoalteromonas sp. that form a clade with P. prydzensis and P. mariniglutinosa. The strains produced bacteriostatic anti- V. parahaemolyticus agents during the exponential growth phase, which were also active against V. cholerae and V. anguillarum, but not on other Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. Bacteriostatic agents could be permeated by analytic ultra-filtration with 3.5 kDa cut-off, partially precipitated with 70 and 90 % ammonium sulphate, but not extracted with ethyl acetate. Reverse-phase HPLC revealed the production of a set of 5-6 active compounds by each strain (elution from 20 to 40 % acetonitrile), with similar but non identical HPLC patterns. Additionally, V. parahaemolyticus was able to progressively overcome the inhibition of antibiotics in trypticase soy agar with Fe(III) 0.5 up to 2 mM, suggesting the involvement of a set of novel siderophore or active molecules targeted at different Fe-siderophore uptake systems. The overall findings suggest that Pseudoalteromonas sp. DIT strains produce a putatively novel class of bacteriostatic and probably amphiphilic anti- Vibrio agents, indicating the need for further studies with chemical purification followed by their structural and functional characterization. Finally, the crude cell-free extracts, as well as the strains incubated at 10 and 10 c.f.u./mL, did not cause mortality in Artemia franciscana nauplii, suggesting that these bacteria are serious candidates for further probiotic evaluations with shellfish and fish cultures. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the presence of the receptor for hyaluronan-mediated motility (RHAMM) in human conjunctival epithelium and in two widely used cell lines from human corneal (HCE) and conjunctival (IOBA-NHC) epithelia. We compared the distribution of RHAMM proteins and mRNAs in human ocular surface tissues (corneal, limbal and conjunctival), HCE and IOBA-NHC cell lines, and corneal and conjunctival epithelia primary samples from healthy donors with the previously identified hyaluronan receptor CD44. We also aimed to determine if soluble CD44 (sCD44) was present in human tears, as it could have a role in the interaction of the tear fluid with hyaluronan. Protein expression was evaluated by Western blots and immunofluorescence microscopy. mRNA expression was evaluated by RT-PCR and Q-PCR. sCD44 was analyzed by ELISA in culture supernatants and in human tears. We describe the expression of RHAMM in human healthy conjunctiva and in HCE and IOBA-NHC cells at both protein and mRNA levels, and the presence of sCD44 in human tears. Furthermore, we detected CD44 and sCD44 expression variations in in vitro inflammatory conditions. This study also focused on the necessary caution with which the conclusions extracted from cell lines should be made, and in the great value of using primary samples as often as possible. Although loss of heterozygosity (LOH) on the p53 locus is frequent in squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck (SCCHN), controversy still remains regarding the prognostic significance of such an event. Eighty consecutive SCCHN were studied. DNA was extracted from matched sets of normal and tumour tissue and used for polymerase chain reaction amplification of microsatellite markers located in the p53 locus. LOH at the p53 locus was found in 39 (70%) of the 56 informative cases. No relationship was found between p53 LOH and age, site, T stage, N stage, disease stage, and histological differentiation. Recurrence occurred in 53% of the cases with LOH and in 58% of the cases without it (P = 0.28). Moreover, no statistically significant association was found between p53 LOH and disease-specific survival (log-rank P = 0.98). These data suggest that although LOH at the p53 locus is common in SCCHN, this finding is of little clinical significance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The solitary fibrous tumor is an uncommon unilateral benign lesion that usually arises from the pleura. Recently, these tumors have been described in many other locations, such as the mediastinum, head and neck, orbit and urogenital system. To date, only two cases of solitary fibrous tumor arising from the larynx have been reported in the scientific literature. We describe a new case of laryngeal solitary fibrous tumor localized at the right false vocal fold. A 29-year-old man presented with a 6-month history of progressive hoarseness and foreign body sensation in the throat. A mass lesion was recognized in the right false vocal fold, and CT scan demonstrated a large, well-defined tumor without signs of infiltration. The tumor was removed by transoral CO2 laser surgery. The definitive diagnosis was obtained by immunohistochemical analysis that showed vimentin and CD34-positive cells. The patient remains free of tumor after 15 months of follow-up.
