The Iberian breed is the most important pig population of the Mediterranean type. The genetic structure of two strains (Torbiscal and Guadyerbas) and three varieties (Retinto, Entrepelado and Lampiño) of this breed was studied using 173 pigs genotyped for 36 microsatellites. In addition, 40 pigs of the related Duroc breed were also analysed. In the 1960s, the Iberian breed's numbers were severely reduced by disease, due to economic change and to crossbreeding. Varieties are in danger of disappearance or blending. A new conservation strategy is required. An analysis was performed that allows us to ascertain the loss or gain of genetic diversity if one or several subpopulations are removed. The results are compared with those using the Weitzman method. The two methodologies produce conservation priorities that are completely different, the reason being that the Weitzman method does not take into account the within-population genetic diversity. We apply optimal contribution theory and a new procedure for cluster analysis, and discuss their value in the general framework of the problems of setting of priorities and tactics for the conservation of genetic resources.

Norwich A method based on genetic algorithms for obtaining coordinated motion plans of manipulator robots is presented. A decoupled planning approach has been used; that is, the problem has been decomposed into two subproblems: path planning and trajectory planning. This paper focuses on the second problem. The generated plans minimize the total motion time of the robots along their paths. The optimization problem is solved by evolutionary algorithms using a variable-length individuals codification and specific genetic operators.

The rate of homosexual copulation has been defined as the ratio between the number of homosexual mountings and the total number of mountings (homo and heterosexual) performed by a Tribolium castaneum male during a period of 30 min. In a laboratory population, the average rate when a number of males (m) and females (k×m) are tested together has been estimated in each of the six situations defined by m=2 and 10 and k=0.5, 1, and 2, k being the sex ratio among scored individuals. Good agreement was found between the observed rates of homosexual copulation and those expected assuming random contacts between pairs of individuals totally indiscriminate with respect to sex. The genetic properties of the trait have been investigated by means of a diallel analysis of six highly inbred lines derived from the same population and their F1 crosses. Significant general and specific combining ability effects were detected. When noninbred females were used for testing, the rate of homosexual copulation is expected to be higher for inbred than for noninbred males. This prediction, implying the existence of inbreeding depression for the trait, also was confirmed by the data. © 1991 Plenum Publishing Corporation.

Estimation of non-additive genetic effects in animal breeding is important because it increases the accuracy of breeding value prediction and the value of mate allocation procedures. With the advent of genomic selection these ideas should be revisited. The objective of this study was to quantify the efficiency of including dominance effects and practising mating allocation under a whole-genome evaluation scenario. Four strategies of selection, carried out during five generations, were compared by simulation techniques. In the first scenario (MS), individuals were selected based on their own phenotypic information. In the second (GSA), they were selected based on the prediction generated by the Bayes A method of whole-genome evaluation under an additive model. In the third (GSD), the model was expanded to include dominance effects. These three scenarios used random mating to construct future generations, whereas in the fourth one (GSD + MA), matings were optimized by simulated annealing. The advantage of GSD over GSA ranges from 9 to 14% of the expected response and, in addition, using mate allocation (GSD + MA) provides an additional response ranging from 6% to 22%. However, mate selection can improve the expected genetic response over random mating only in the first generation of selection. Furthermore, the efficiency of genomic selection is eroded after a few generations of selection, thus, a continued collection of phenotypic data and re-evaluation will be required.

One QTL affecting backfat thickness (BF), intramuscular fat content (IMF) and eye muscle area (MA) was previously localized on porcine chromosome 6 in an F2 cross between Iberian and Landrace pigs. This work was done to study the effect of two positional candidate genes on these traits: H-FABP and LEPR genes. The QTL mapping analysis was repeated with a regression method using genotypes for seven microsatellites and two PCR-RFLPs in the H-FABP and LEPR genes. H-FABP and LEPR genes were located at 85.4 and 107 cM respectively, by linkage analysis. The effects of the candidate gene polymorphisms were analyzed in two ways. When an animal model was fitted, both genes showed significant effects on fatness traits, the H-FABP polymorphism showed significant effects on IMF and MA, and the LEPR polymorphism on BF and IMF. But when the candidate gene effect was included in a QTL regression analysis these associations were not observed, suggesting that they must not be the causal mutations responsible for the effects found. Differences in the results of both analyses showed the inadequacy of the animal model approach for the evaluation of positional candidate genes in populations with linkage disequilibrium, when the probabilities of the parental origin of the QTL alleles are not included in the model.
