Patients admitted to neonatal intensive care units are up to eight times more likely to experience medication errors than patients admitted to adult intensive care units. Prescribing errors account for up to 74% of medication errors. Electronic prescribing has been postulated as a tool to reduce errors. The objective was to analyse prescribing errors with the e-prescribing system and risk factors. All patients who were admitted for at least 24 h and who received active pharmacological treatment during the study period were included. Prescriptions were made using electronic assisted prescription software integrated into the medical record system. Treatment was reviewed daily by a pharmacist, and errors were graded according to taxonomic criteria. A total of 240 patients were included, 13,876 prescriptions were reviewed and 455 errors were found (3.3% of prescriptions were wrong). Prescribing errors were concentrated in 40 drugs/nutritional products. The most frequent error was a discrepancy between the prescription and the associated text-free field (n = 196). The drugs with the most errors were Lactobacillus acidophilus, caffeine citrate, acetaminophen, gentamycin and cholecalciferol. Patients with a birth weight from 1000 to 1500 g were 82% more likely to experience an error than those with an extremely low birth weight (< 1000 g) (OR = 1.81, 95% CI = 1.42–2.89, p < 0.05). Patients at the highest risk were those with gestational ages from 28 to 32 weeks, with a 29.80% greater risk of prescribing errors than those with gestational ages less than 28 weeks (OR = 1.29, 95% CI = 1.02–1.65, p < 0.05). The study assessed microhardness, microleakage of Class I, and the degree of conversion of composite resins preheated at 55 °C. This in vitro study evaluated two nanofilled composite resins (NCR), Filtek™ P60 and Filtek™ Z350 XT, used in the restorations. The degree of conversion (DC) was determined by Raman spectroscopy; the study compared the vibrational bands of the residual unpolymerized methacrylate C=C stretching band at 1640 cm−1 to the aromatic C–C stretching band at 1610 cm−1, used as an internal standard. Microleakage tests considered standard Class 1 cavities prepared on human premolars randomly divided. Preheating Filtek™ P60 and Filtek™ Z350 XT increased significantly VMH values (p = 0.0001). The highest microleakage occurred in preheated Filtek™ Z350 XT, while the lowest was in unheated Filtek™ P60. Unheated Filtek™ Z350 XT showed a significant increase of microleakage than unheated Filtek™ P60. (p = 0.024). Preheating of composite resins improved mechanical properties increasing DC and VMH. We analyze the dynamics of N-qubit systems in the measurement space under the action of symmetric Hamiltonians. We show that the evolution of the discrete distribution function, representing the global properties of multipartite states, becomes quasicontinuous in the macroscopic limit N ≫ 1. Green periurban residential areas in Mediterranean countries have flourished in the last decades and become foci for leishmaniasis. To remedy the absence of information on vector ecology in these environments, we examined phlebotomine sand fly distribution in 29 sites in Murcia City over a 3-year period, including the plots of 20 detached houses and nine non-urbanized sites nearby. We collected 5,066 specimens from five species using "sticky" interception and light attraction traps. The relative frequency of the main Leishmania infantum vector Phlebotomus perniciosus in these traps was 32% and 63%, respectively. Sand fly density was widely variable spatially and temporally and greatest in non-urbanized sites, particularly in caves and abandoned buildings close to domestic animal holdings. Phlebotomus perniciosus density in house plots was positively correlated with those in non-urbanized sites, greatest in larger properties with extensive vegetation and non-permanently lived, but not associated to dog presence or a history of canine leishmaniasis. Within house plots, sand fly density was highest in traps closest to walls. Furthermore, the study provides a guideline for insect density assessment and reporting and is envisioned as a building block towards the development of a pan-European database for robust investigation of environmental determinants of sand fly distribution. In the μ ν SSM, the presence of R-parity violating couplings involving right-handed (RH) neutrinos solves simultaneously the μ - and ν -problems. We explore extensions of the μ ν SSM adding a U (1) ′ gauge group, which provides the RH neutrinos with a non-vanishing charge. In these models, dubbed U μ ν SSM, the anomaly cancellation conditions impose the presence of exotic quarks in the spectrum that are vector-like under the standard model (SM) gauge group: either three pairs SU(2) quark singlets, or a pair of quark singlets together with a pair of quark doublets. Several singlets under the SM group can also be present, with the U (1) ′ charges making distinctions among them, and therefore allowing different types of couplings. Some of these singlets dynamically generate Majorana masses for the RH neutrinos, and others can be candidates for dark matter. The useful characteristics of models with U (1) ′ s are also present in U μ ν SSM models: baryon-number-violating operators as well as explicit Majorana masses and μ terms are forbidden, and the domain wall problem is avoided. The phenomenology of U μ ν SSM models is very rich. We analyze the experimental constraints on their parameter space, specially on the mass and mixing of the new Z ′ boson. In addition to the exotic quarks, which can hadronize inside the detector or decay producing SM particles, the U μ ν SSM models can also have new signals such as decays of the Z ′ to sparticle pairs like right sneutrinos, charginos or neutralinos. The capacity of coral reefs to provide ecosystem services is directly related to their three-dimensional structural complexity. This parameter is also correlated with total fish biomass, reef resilience to external stresses and the dissipation of wave energy. However, information on structural complexity (i.e., reef rugosity) has not always been assessed in historical monitoring programs, and long-term trends are sometimes unavailable. In this study, we show that it is possible to predict and hindcast the three-dimensional complexity of coral reefs by combining photogrammetry, statistical modeling and historical benthic community data. We calibrated lasso generalized linear models and boosted regression trees to predict structural complexity from photogrammetry transects around Moorea (French Polynesia). Our models were able to predict structural complexity with high accuracy (cross-validated R2 ranges between 0.81 and 0.9). We then used our models to hindcast historical trends in 3D structural complexity using community composition data collected in Moorea from 2004 to 2017. The temporal analysis highlighted the severe impact of a crown-of-thorns (COTS) outbreak from 2006 to 2009 and Cyclone Oli in 2010. In conjunction, these two events reduce coral cover from ~ 50% to almost zero. While the collection of actual data is always to be preferred, our model captured these effects, confirming the capacity of this modeling technique to predict structural complexity on the basis of assemblage composition. Purpose: Increasing evidence shows that altered metabolism is a critical hallmark in colon cancer. There is a strong need to explore the molecular mechanisms underlying cancer metabolism. Whether the aberrant expression of microRNAs contributes to cancer metabolism is not fully understood. miR-328 is a putative potential target of SLC2A1, but the regulating mechanism between them remains unknown. We have examined whether miR-328 directly regulates SLC2A1/GLUT1 expression in colon cancer cells.Methods: We performed in silico bioinformatic analyses to identify miR-328-mediated molecular pathways and targets. We also performed luciferase assays and western blot analyses in LOVO and SW480 colon cancer cell lines. In addition, we assessed miR-328 expression in 47 paired tumor and normal tissue specimens from resected colon cancer patients.Results: Luciferase reporter assays showed that miR-328 directly targeted SLC2A1 3′-untranslated region (UTR), with a significant decrease in luciferase activity in both LOVO and SW480 cell lines. These results were validated by western blot. miR-328 expression was significantly downregulated in tumor tissue compared with paired normal tissue.Conclusions: Our results show that miR-328 targets SLC2A1/GLUT1. We suggest that miR-328 may be involved in the orchestration of the Warburg effect in colon cancer cells. Furthermore, miR‐328 expression is reduced in colon cancer patients and thus inversely correlates with the classically reported upregulated SLC2A1/GLUT1 expression in tumors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We consider supersymmetric extensions of the standard model with a vector-like doublet ( T B) of quarks with charge 2 /3 and −1 /3, respectively. Compared to non-supersymmetric models, there is a variety of new decay modes for the vector-like quarks, involving the extra scalars present in supersymmetry. The importance of these new modes, yielding multi-top, multi-bottom and also multi-Higgs signals, is highlighted by the analysis of several benchmark scenarios. We show how the triangles commonly used to represent the branching ratios of the 'standard' decay modes of the vector-like quarks involving W, Z or Higgs bosons can be generalised to include additional channels. Maps have always been tools that have fascinated men, for their ability to make us see the world that surrounds us. They were and are the outcome of models and methods applied to the observation of the world, starting from geodesy, surveying photogrammetry and remote sensing. All these disciplines, which we now group under the new name of geomatics, have had a tremendous boost in recent years. However, the synergy with information computer technology is probably the aspect that is revolutionizing more cartography. Earlier computers and after the Internet have brought us to new concepts and tools that will have profound effects not only in the world of niche of cartographers, but also more generally in the life of all human beings. The Digital Earth, proposed in 1998 by Al Gore, has been enriched in just twenty years of a set of new demands, which make even more interesting and challenging being cartographers today. The paper, without claiming to be comprehensive, aims at providing a concise overview of the state of art and of the advancement in this area. Moreover, it urges the community of geomatics to be protagonist and promoter of a new cartography, largely to be reinvented, and that would put us at the center of processes of knowledge and management of the Earth. The map makers in the past helped discovering new worlds, now the challenge is to rediscover our common world with new eyes of environmental, social, economic equity, sustainability and participation. This study examined the effects of the Guineafowl pufferfish ( Arothron meleagris), a major corallivore in the Eastern Pacific, on pocilloporid corals on a reef at Gorgona Island, Colombia. Pufferfish occurred at a density of 171.2 individuals ha and fed at a rate of 1.8 bites min, which produced a standing bite density of 366.2 bites m. We estimate that approximately 15.6 % of the annual pocilloporid carbonate production is removed by the pufferfish population. Examination of the predation effect on individual pocilloporid colonies revealed that although nubbins exposed to corallivory had lower linear growth, they gained similar weight and became thicker than those protected from it. Additionally, colonies with simulated predation injuries (on up to 75 % of branch tips) healed successfully and maintained growth rates similar to those of uninjured colonies. Despite the high corallivore pressure exerted by pufferfish on this reef, we conclude that they have a low destructive impact on Pocillopora colonies as corals can maintain their carbonate production rate while effectively recovering from partial predation. Background:We conducted a phase I study in patients with advanced solid tumours to identify the recommended dose, assess pharmacokinetics (PK), pharmacodynamic activity and preclinical antitumour efficacy of the combination of sirolimus and gemcitabine.Methods:Nineteen patients were treated with sirolimus 2 or 5 mg daily and gemcitabine 800 or 1000 mg m−2 on days 1 and 8. Dose escalation depended on dose-limiting toxicity (DLT) rate during the first 3-week period. Paired skin biopsies were evaluated for phosphorylated S6 (pS6) as marker of mTOR (mammalian target of rapamycin) inhibition. Pharmacokinetics and preclinical evaluation of efficacy using two different sarcoma cell lines and leiomyosarcoma xenografts were also conducted.Results:Three DLTs were observed: grade 3 transaminitis, grade 3 thrombocytopenia and grade 4 thrombocytopenia. Common treatment-related adverse events included anaemia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia and transaminitis. Pharmacodynamic analyses demonstrated mTOR inhibition with sirolimus 5 mg and PK showed no influence of sirolimus concentrations on gemcitabine clearance. In vitro and in vivo studies suggested mTOR pathway hyperactivation by gemcitabine that was reversed by sirolimus. Tumour growth in leiomyosarcoma xenografts was dramatically inhibited by the treatment.Conclusions:Recommended dose was sirolimus 5 mg per 24 h plus gemcitabine 800 mg m−2. Controlling the output of a light emitter is one of the basic tasks in photonics, with landmarks such as the development of the laser and single-photon sources. The ever growing range of quantum applications is making it increasingly important to diversify the available quantum sources. Here, we propose a cavity quantum electrodynamics scheme to realize emitters that release their energy in groups (or 'bundles') of N photons (where N is an integer). Close to 100% of two-photon emission and 90% of three-photon emission is shown to be within reach of state-of-the-art samples. The emission can be tuned with the system parameters so that the device behaves as a laser or as an N-photon gun. Here, we develop the theoretical formalism to characterize such emitters, with the bundle statistics arising as an extension of the fundamental correlation functions of quantum optics. Key message: We have identified 19 QTLs for rachis architecture, a key and complex trait for grapevine production. Fifty out of 1,173 genes underlying these QTLs are candidates to be further explored. Abstract: In the table grape industry, the rachis architecture has economic and management implications. Therefore, understanding the genetics of this trait is key for its breeding. The aim of this work was to identify genetic determinants of traits associated with the cluster architecture. Characterisations of eight traits was performed on a 'Ruby Seedless' × 'Sultanina' crossing (F: n = 137) during three seasons, with and without gibberellic acid (GA) applications. The genotypic effects and the genotype × GA interactions were significant for several traits. Rachis length ( rl), lateral shoulder length and node number along the central axis were the most prominent traits. On average, the heritability of these traits was ~71 %, with heritability of rl being 76 % as estimated under different seasons. Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) analyses showed that linkage group 5 (LG) and LG harboured the largest number of QTLs for these traits. According to the variance explained, the main QTL (corresponding to rl) was found on LG. These QTLs were supported mainly by a paternal additive effect and revealed possible pleiotropic effects. Based on the grapevine reference genome, we identified 1,173 genes located under these QTL confidence intervals. Fifty of the 891 annotated genes of this list were selected for their further characterisation because of their possible participation in the rachis architecture. In conclusion, the QTLs detected indicate that these traits and their GA responsiveness have a clear genetic basis. BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES:Hydration state can be assessed via body mass change (BMΔ), serum and urine osmolality (Sosm, Uosm), urine-specific gravity (Usg) and urine volume (Uvol). As no hydration index has been shown to be valid in all circumstances, value exists in exploring novel biomarkers such as salivary osmolality (Vosm). Utilizing acute BMΔ as the reference standard, this research examined the efficacy of Sosm, Vosm, Uosm, Uvol and Usg, during passive (PAS) and active (ACT) heat exposure.SUBJECTS/METHODS:Twenty-three healthy men (age, 22±3 years; mass, 77.3±12.8 kg; height, 179.9±8.8cm; body fat, 10.6±4.5%) completed two randomized 5-h dehydration trials (36±1 °C). During PAS, subjects sat quietly, and during ACT, participants cycled at 68±6% maximal heart rate. Investigators measured all biomarkers at each 1% BMΔ.RESULTS:Average mass loss during PAS was 1.4±0.3%, and 4.1±0.7% during ACT. Significant between-treatment differences at −1% BMΔ were observed for Sosm (PAS, 296±4; ACT, 301±4 mOsm/kg) and Uosm (PAS, 895±207; ACT, 661±192 mOsm/kg). During PAS, only Uosm, Uvol and Usg increased significantly (−1 and −2% BMΔ versus baseline). During ACT, Vosm most effectively diagnosed dehydration 2% (sensitivity=86%; specificity=91%), followed by Sosm (sensitivity=83%; specificity=83%). Reference change values were validated for Sosm, Usg and BMΔ.CONCLUSIONS:The efficacy of indices to detect dehydration 2% differed across treatments. At rest (PAS), only urinary indices increased in concert with body water loss. During exercise (ACT), Sosm and Vosm exhibited the highest sensitivity and specificity. Animals often announce their unprofitability to predators through conspicuous coloured signals. Here we tested whether the apparently conspicuous colour designs of the four European Coraciiformes and Upupiformes species may have evolved as aposematic signals, or whether instead they imply a cost in terms of predation risk. Because previous studies suggested that these species are unpalatable, we hypothesized that predators could avoid targeting them based on their colours. An experiment was performed where two artificial models of each bird species were exposed simultaneously to raptor predators, one painted so as to resemble the real colour design of these birds, and the other one painted using cryptic colours. Additionally, we used field data on the black kite's diet to compare the selection of these four species to that of other avian prey. Conspicuous models were attacked in equal or higher proportions than their cryptic counterparts, and the attack rate on the four species increased with their respective degree of contrast against natural backgrounds. The analysis of the predator's diet revealed that the two least attacked species were negatively selected in nature despite their abundance. Both conspicuous and cryptic models of one of the studied species (the hoopoe) received fewer attacks than cryptic models of the other three species, suggesting that predators may avoid this species for characteristics other than colour. Globally, our results suggest that the colour of coraciiforms and upupiforms does not function as an aposematic signal that advises predators of their unprofitability, but also that conspicuous colours may increase predation risk in some species, supporting thus the handicap hypothesis. Background/Objectives:This investigation evaluated 12 hydration biomarkers, to determine which represent 24-h whole-body water balance (that is, measured as water retention or clearance (WR-C) by the kidneys).Subjects/Methods:Healthy males (n=59; body mass, 75.1±7.9 kg; height, 178±6 cm; age, 22±3 years; body mass index, 23.9±2.4 kg/m2) met with a registered dietitian each morning (days 1-11) to optimize completeness and accuracy of food and fluid records, then went about ordinary daily activities. These men visited the laboratory for blood samples and collected all urine produced on days 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12. The reference standard (WR-C) was calculated using 24-h urine volume, 24-h urine osmolality, and serum osmolality (single morning venous sample).Results:Statistical regression analyses indicated that, among the 12 hydration biomarkers, only 24-h urine osmolality (r2=0.60, P<0.0001) and 24-h urine specific gravity (r2=0.52, P<0.0001) strongly predicted WR-C. The 24-h fluid intake, 24-h body mass change, 24-h urine color and 24-h urine volume were weak (P>0.05) predictors of WR-C, similar to serum osmolality and other single measurements (range of r2 values, 0.19-0.0001).Conclusions:These observations of healthy, active young men demonstrate that WR-C is strongly related to the 24-h concentration of urine, which in turn reflects the excretion of total solids in the diet. Although morning urine assessments provided information about a single time point, 24-h urine osmolality and 24-h urine specific gravity were the best predictors of 24-h body water balance. Morphology is the basis of the diagnosis of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). The WHO classification offers prognostic information and helps with the treatment decisions. However, morphological changes are subject to potential inter-observer variance. The aim of our study was to explore the reliability of the 2008 WHO classification of MDS, reviewing 100 samples previously diagnosed with MDS using the 2001 WHO criteria. Specimens were collected from 10 hospitals and were evaluated by 10 morphologists, working in five pairs. Each observer evaluated 20 samples, and each sample was analyzed independently by two morphologists. The second observer was blinded to the clinical and laboratory data, except for the peripheral blood (PB) counts. Nineteen cases were considered as unclassified MDS (MDS-U) by the 2001 WHO classification, but only three remained as MDS-U by the 2008 WHO proposal. Discordance was observed in 26 of the 95 samples considered suitable (27 %). Although there were a high number of observers taking part, the rate of discordance was quite similar among the five pairs. The inter-observer concordance was very good regarding refractory anemia with excess blasts type 1 (RAEB-1) (10 of 12 cases, 84 %), RAEB-2 (nine of 10 cases, 90 %), and also good regarding refractory cytopenia with multilineage dysplasia (37 of 50 cases, 74 %). However, the categories with unilineage dysplasia were not reproducible in most of the cases. The rate of concordance with refractory cytopenia with unilineage dysplasia was 40 % (two of five cases) and 25 % with RA with ring sideroblasts (two of eight). Our results show that the 2008 WHO classification gives a more accurate stratification of MDS but also illustrates the difficulty in diagnosing MDS with unilineage dysplasia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In neurodegenerative diseases, progressive oxidative stress is a major event that precedes neuronal death. Oxidative stress is characterized by an imbalance between oxidants and antioxidants. This imbalance induced oxidative molecular and cell damage, reducing cellular viability. 3-Nitropropionic acid (3NP) causes oxidative stress and other molecular and cellular changes similar to those observed in neurons of patients with Huntington’s disease. Since carvedilol and melatonin act as free-radical scavengers, this study examined the effect of carvedilol (10−5 M) and melatonin (10−5 M) on oxidative and cell damage induced by 3NP in N1E-115 neuroblastoma cells. Carvedilol and melatonin prevented the increases in lipid peroxidation and total LDH activity, as well as the depletion of reduced glutathione (GSH) and the reduction of antioxidative enzymes activities in N1E-115 cells incubated with 100 mM 3NP. All these carvedilol and melatonin effects were more intense when the drugs were added before rather than after inducing the damage by 3NP. These results also provided evidence supporting the hypothesis that carvedilol and melatonin can be useful for treating neurodegenerative diseases, such as Huntington’s disease. The European Water Framework Directive establishes the need to define stream type-specific reference conditions to identify “high ecological status”. Methods for selecting reference sites using a priori criteria have been proposed by many authors. A review of these criteria revealed that the most relevant criteria for streams and rivers were those related to riparian vegetation, diffuse and point sources of pollution, river morphology and hydrological conditions and regulation. In this work, we propose 20 criteria that reflect the characteristics of Mediterranean streams and their most frequent disturbances for the selection of reference sites in Mediterranean streams in Spain. We studied 162 sites located in 33 Mediterranean basins belonging to five stream types. Of the locations, 57% were selected as a priori reference sites by having applied the proposed criteria. Reference sites were identified for all stream types except for “large watercourses” which includes the lower reaches of some rivers in this study area. This a priori selection of reference sites was subjected to validation using the macroinvertebrate community by applying of an IBMWP threshold, which is considered to be an indicator of undisturbed sites in Mediterranean streams. This approach determined that whole of this selection (100%) could be considered valid reference sites. Furthermore, we identified differences in the reference conditions for each stream type on the basis of macroinvertebrate assemblage composition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Development of cognitive-enhancing drugs that delay or halt mild cognitive impairment progression to Alzheimer’s disease would be of great benefit. The aim of this study was to examine the ability of ( S)-2,3-dihydro-[3,4]-cyclopentano-1,2,4-benzothiadiazine-1,1-dioxide (S 18986), a positive allosteric modulator of alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptors, to improve behavioral performance and alleviate age-related deficits in oxidative stress status in the prelimbic cortex and hippocampus. Daily administration of S 18986 (0.1, 0.3, and 1.0 mg/kg) or vehicle was given to separate groups of male rats starting at 12 months of age. Additionally, daily vehicle administration was given to a group of rats starting at 3 months of age. Four months after initiation of drug administration, rats were trained and tested in an operant-delayed alternation task and a reinforcer devaluation task. Upon completion of testing, oxidative stress status was assessed in the prelimbic cortex and hippocampus. S 18986 dose-dependently altered responses in the reinforcer devaluation task such that aged rats came to resemble young rats. There were no age or drug effects in the operant-delayed alternation task. Levels of the lipid peroxidation product 4-hydroxy-nonenal (HNE) were increased, and Cu/Zn–superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels were decreased in prelimbic cortex in aged rats, changes that were reversed by S 18986. Similarly, age-related increases in hippocampal HNE levels were prevented by S 18986. Positive modulation of AMPA receptor activity may be a therapeutic approach to halt or slow progression of mild cognitive impairment via improvement in oxidative stress status in the hippocampus and prelimbic cortex. The bean pod weevil ( Apion godmani Wagner) is a serious insect pest of common beans ( Phaseolus vulgaris L.) grown in Mexico and Central America that is best controlled by host-plant resistance available in Durango or Jalisco genotypes such as J-117. Given unreliable infestation by the insect, the use of marker-assisted selection is desirable. In the present study, we developed a set of nine molecular markers for Apion resistance and mapped them to loci on chromosomes 2, 3, 4 and 6 (linkage groups b01, b08, b07and b11, respectively) based on genetic analysis of an F 5:10 susceptible × resistant recombinant inbred line population (Jamapa × J-117) and two reference mapping populations (DOR364 × G19833 and BAT93 × JaloEEP558) for which chromosome and linkage group designations are known. All the markers were derived from randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) bands that were identified through bulked segregant analysis and cloned for conversion to sequence tagged site (STS) markers. One of the markers was dominant while four detected polymorphism upon digestion with restriction enzymes. The other markers were mapped as RAPD fragments. Phenotypic data for the population was based on the evaluation of percentage seed damage in replicated trials conducted over four seasons in Mexico. In single point regression analysis, individual markers explained from 3.5 to 22.5% of the variance for the resistance trait with the most significant markers overall being F10-500S, U1-1400R, R20-1200S, W9-1300S and Z4-800S, all markers that mapped to chromosome 2 (b01). Two additional significant markers, B1-1400R and W6-800R, were mapped to chromosome 6 (b11) and explained from 4.3 to 10.2% of variance depending on the season. The latter of these markers was a dominant STS marker that may find immediate utility in marker-assisted selection. The association of these two loci with the Agr and Agm genes is discussed as well as the possibility of additional resistance genes on chromosome 4 (b07) and chromosome 3 (b08). These are among the first specific markers developed for tagging insect resistance in common bean and are expected to be useful for evaluating the mechanism of resistance to A. godmani. This study was designed to determine the prevalence of healthy Haemophilus influenzae carriers in a random sample of the preschool population in Catalonia. Oropharyngeal swabs were collected and cultured on chocolate agar supplemented with 260 μg/ml of bacitracin. Four hundred two of the 734 (54.8%) children studied were detected as Haemophilus influenzae carriers: 7 (0.9%) carried serotype b, 14 (1.9%) serotype e, 6 (0.8%) serotype f, and 375 (51%) carried nontypable strains. The results show that, although the prevalence of Haemophilus influenzae carriers is similar to figures reported from other countries, the prevalence of Haemophilus influenzae serotype b carriers is lower and corresponds with the low incidence of invasive disease observed in the Catalan community. Determination of plasma and tissue cytokine levels in inflammatory bowel disease have frequently resulted in conflicting data. In the present study we determined in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC), the levels of the proinflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-1beta, IL-6, interferon (IFN)-gamma, and tumor-necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha liberated by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and lamina propria mononuclear cells (LPMC) after 48-hr culture with pokeweed mitogen (PWM). IL-1beta, IL-6, IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha in the supernatant were detected by ELISA. Results show low basal levels of IL-1beta secretion by PBMC and LPMC, and a considerable increase after mitogen stimulation. Basal IL-6 production by PBMC was higher in UC patients than in controls [2029 pg/ml, CI95(-165 to 4223) vs 572 pg/ml (-383 to 1527) respectively, P = 0.05] and also after PWM activation [14,995 pg/ml (7759-22,230) vs 6598 pg/ml (3240-9956), respectively, P = 0.05]. In LPMC, no differences in IL-6 secretion were observed. TNF-alpha in activated PBMC of patients with UC was not significantly increased in relation to control (P = 0.09). No constitutive secretion of IFN-gamma was observed in mononuclear cells. IFN-gamma levels secreted by activated LPMC were lower in patients with UC than in controls [1571 pg/ml (-108 to 3251) vs 7953 pg/ml (3851-12,055), respectively, P = 0.03]. These results suggest that IL-6, IL-1beta, and TNF-alpha participate as mediators in the inflammatory phenomena observed in UC. To detect and ultimately isolate genes of Phytophthora capsici the expression of which is induced during its interaction with pepper, a comparative analysis of gene expression in the wild-type pathogenic fungus with expression in a non-pathogenic (Nop) mutant reduced in cutinase and esterase activities was performed by the differential display of mRNAs. Discrimination of fungal genes induced in planta, from plant genes induced in response to the pathogen, was accomplished by exposure of the mycelium to bare-rooted seedlings of pepper ( Capsicum annuum) in sterile water, to allow the initiation of infection, and then physical removal of the induced mycelium. With six sets of primer combinations, eight cDNA fragments (representing fungal genes) were present in planta only for the pathogenic strain. RNA-blot analysis showed that the transcripts detected accumulated to detectable levels only at early stages of the interaction. Sequence analysis and database searches revealed homology of one of the cDNA clones to fungal cutinases. The 218 amino-acid sequence predicted from sequencing a genomic clone of P. capsici suggested a protein of molecular weight of 23 980 Da with similarity to fungal cutinases previously characterized. These results indicated that differential-display analysis is sufficiently sensitive to be applied for the detection and isolation of fungal genes induced during a plant-pathogen interaction. The kinetics of in vitro encystation of Blastocystis hominis was studied over 9 days. The differentiation between trophic (TF) and cyst forms (CF) was determined by differential counts before and after treatment with distilled water. A cytochemistry study using acridine orange and Calcofluor white wet-mount preparations of CF was carried out. The growth curves of TF and CF were related because the decrease in TF was followed by an increase in CF, and vice versa. The maximum of CF counts was obtained on the 6th or 7th day. Using the differential acridine orange stain, two subpopulations of CF, yellow-orange fluorescent cells or precysts and green fluorescent cells or cysts, were detected and their curves were also related. CF was stained by Calcofluor white, which suggested the existence of β-(1-4)-glycosyl residues in the wall cysts of B. hominis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We perform an analysis of the soft supersymmetry-breaking terms arising in Calabi-Yau compactifications. The sigma-model contribution and the instanton correction to the Kähler potential are included in the computation. The existence of off-diagonal moduli and matter metrics gives rise to specific features as the possibility of having scalars heavier than gauginos or the presence of tachyons. Although non-universal soft terms is a natural situation, we point out that there is an interesting limit where universality is achieved. Finally, we compare these results with those of orbifold compactifications. Although they are qualitatively similar some features indeed change. For example, sum rules found in orbifold models which imply that on average the scalars are lighter than gauginos can be violated in Calabi-Yau manifolds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the structure of the soft SUSY-breaking terms obtained from some classes of 4-D strings under the assumption of dilaton/moduli dominance in the process of SUSY-breaking. We generalize previous analyses in several ways and in particular consider the new features appearing when several moduli fields contribute to SUSY breaking (instead of an overall modulus T ). Some qualitative features indeed change in the multimoduli case. A general discussion for symmetric Abelian orbifolds as well as explicit examples are given. Certain general sumrules involving soft terms of different particles are shown to apply to large classes of models. Unlike in the overall modulus T case, gauginos may be lighter than scalars even at the tree-level. However, if one insists in getting that pattern of soft terms, these sum rules force some of the scalars to get negative mass. These tachyonic masses could be a problem for standard model 4-D strings but an advantage in the case of string-GUTs. We also discuss the possible effects of off-diagonal metrics for the matter fields which may give rise to flavour-changing neutral currents. Different sources for the bilinear B soft term are studied. It is found that the Giudice-Masiero mechanism for generating a 'μ-term', as naturally implemented in orbifolds, leads to the prediction ¦tgβ¦=1 at the string scale, independently of the Goldstino direction. Cultivated common bean ( Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and tepary bean ( Phaseolus acutifolius A. Gray) genotypes possessing desirable agronomic traits were hybridized. The F hybrids were backcrossed twice with the common bean (i.e., recurrent backcrossing). Also, alternate backcrosses with common and tepary beans (i.e., congruity backcrossing) were carried out. Embryo culture was necessary for all initial interspecific crosses, and its requirement was proportionally lower when the common bean was used as the recurrent parent and as the last parent of congruity backcrosses. Modification of the embryo culture technique was necessary to produce congruity hybrids. Effects of both tepary and common bean genotypes on the success rate of hybridization were observed. Tepary accession G 40001 and common bean cultivar ICA Pijao facilitated interspecies hybridization. Growth of hybrid embryos before rescue, recovery of mature hybrid plants, and the vigor and fertility of F hybrids all increased with increased recurrent and congruity backcrosses and intermatings between male-sterile F and selected fertile F plants of the third and fifth congruity backcrosses. Introgression of tepary genes was verified by means of seed protein electrophoretic analysis and morphological markers. The results suggest that congruity backcrossing can help to gradually reduce or overcome P. vulgaris x P. acutifolius hybridization barriers such as genotype incompatibility, early embryo abortion, hybrid sterility, and lower frequencies of hybridization. Homoveratric acid (HVA) degradation was observed in cultures of Pleurotus eryngii lacking lignin peroxidase (LiP) activity. Extracellular enzymes seemed responsible for this transformation, and the lack of activity after ultrafiltration of the culture liquid suggests that the presence of some low-molecular-size compounds is required. This hypothesis is supported by rapid HVA transformation after addition of the synthetic laccase substrate 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) to the ultrafiltered liquid. HVA transformation by the extracellular enzymes from P. eryngii takes place via C-C breakdown and formation of veratryl alcohol, which is further transformed into veratraldehyde. The same major compounds were found during HVA transformation by LiP from Phanerochaete chrysosporium, but this reaction was not stimulated by ABTS. Although the involvement of other enzymes cannot be ruled out, purified laccase from Pleurotus eryngii caused the same HVA transformation pattern in presence of ABTS. Moreover, veratryl alcohol oxidation by P. eryngii laccase was demonstrated in the presence of ABTS. Two protein bands with laccase activity were found after PAGE of culture liquid or mycelium extract of Pleurotus eryngii, grown on glucose–ammonium tartrate–yeast extract medium with and without inducers. A major and a minor laccase band were observed in the basal medium. The intensity of the major band (laccase I) did not change after the addition of inducers. However, the minor band (laccase II), characterized by higher electrophoretic mobility, was strongly induced by wheat–straw alkalilignin and vanillic and veratric acids. Laccase activity in the basal medium had an optimum pH of 4.5 and was stable from pH 3 to 10 during 24 h at room temperature. This enzyme had wide substrate specificity on hydroquinones, methoxy-substituted monophenols, and aromatic amines. In general, laccase activity was found only with compounds having a redox potential lower than 0.5 mV. The highest activity was obtained with methoxy- and methyl-substituted p-hydroquinones and aromatic diamines. Some activity also occurred with the aliphatic compound 3,5-cyclohexadiene-1,2-diol. Hyper-reactive malarial splenomegaly (HMS) – originally referred to as tropical splenomegaly syndrome – is characterized by a massive splenomegaly, high titres of anti-malarial antibodies and polyclonal IgM hypergammaglobulinemia. It is believed to be a consequence of an aberrant immunological response to prolonged exposure to malarial parasites. Although it is a frequent disease in the tropics, it is infrequent in western countries and is only seen in long-term residents from endemic areas. We describe the case of a 67-year-old Spanish man, a missionary in Cameroon for 30 years, who presented with a clinical history that fulfilled the diagnosis of HMS. The μ ν SSM is a simple supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (SM) capable of describing neutrino physics in agreement with experiments. We perform the complete one-loop renormalization of the neutral scalar sector of the μ ν SSM with three generation of right-handed neutrinos in a mixed on-shell/ DR ¯ scheme. We calculate the full one-loop corrections to the neutral scalar masses of the μ ν SSM . The one-loop contributions are supplemented by available MSSM higher-order corrections. We obtain numerical results for a SM-like Higgs-boson mass consistent with experimental bounds, while simultaneously agreeing with neutrino oscillation data. We illustrate the distinct phenomenology of the μ ν SSM in scenarios in which one or more right-handed sneutrinos are lighter than the SM-like Higgs boson, which might be substantially mixed with them. These scenarios are experimentally accessible, on the one hand, through direct searches of the right-handed sneutrinos decaying into SM particles, and on the other hand, via the measurements of the SM-like Higgs-boson mass and its couplings. In this way the parameter space of the μ ν SSM can be probed without the need to propose model dependent searches at colliders. Finally, we demonstrate how the μ ν SSM can simultaneously accommodate two excesses measured at LEP and LHC at ∼ 96 GeV at the 1 σ level, while at the same time reproducing neutrino masses and mixings in agreement with neutrino oscillation measurements. The renormalization procedure is discussed in detail, emphasizing conceptual differences to the minimal (MSSM) and next-to-minimal (NMSSM) supersymmetric standard model regarding the field renormalization and the treatment of non-flavor-diagonal soft mass parameters, which have their origin in the breaking of R-parity in the μνSSM. We calculate the full one-loop corrections to the neutral scalar masses of the μνSSM. The one-loop contributions are supplemented by available MSSM higher-order corrections. We obtain numerical results for a SM-like Higgs boson mass consistent with experimental bounds. We compare our results to predictions in the NMSSM to obtain a measure for the significance of genuine μνSSM-like contributions. We only find minor corrections due to the smallness of the neutrino Yukawa couplings, indicating that the Higgs boson mass calculations in the μνSSM are at the same level of accuracy as in the NMSSM. Finally we show that the μνSSM can accomodate a Higgs boson that could explain an excess of γγ events at ∼96GeV as reported by CMS, as well as the 2σ excess of bb¯ events observed at LEP at a similar mass scale. We report a patient who developed severe thrombocytopenia and ischemic stroke following pentosan polysulfate treatment. An ELISA test employed in type-II heparin-induced thrombocytopenia was highly positive. To our knowledge, this is the first case in which this test has been performed in a pentosan polysulfate-induced thrombocytopenia (PIT). Our data suggest that the antibody against pentosan polysulfate-platelet complex also cross-reacts with heparin-platelet factor 4 complex. Due to its greater sensitivity and wider availability, this ELISA test should be used in cases where PIT is suspected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Hanbury Brown-Twiss effect is one of the celebrated phenomenologies of modern physics that accommodates equally well classical (interferences of waves) and quantum (correlations between indistinguishable particles) interpretations. The effect was discovered in the late thirties with a basic observation of Hanbury Brown that radio-pulses from two distinct antennas generate signals on the oscilloscope that wiggle similarly to the naked eye. When Hanbury Brown and his mathematician colleague Twiss took the obvious step to propose bringing the effect in the optical range, they met with considerable opposition as single-photon interferences were deemed impossible. The Hanbury Brown-Twiss effect is nowadays universally accepted and, being so fundamental, embodies many subtleties of our understanding of the wave/particle dual nature of light. Thanks to a novel experimental technique, we report here a generalized version of the Hanbury Brown-Twiss effect to include the frequency of the detected light, or, from the particle point of view, the energy of the detected photons. Our source of light is a polariton condensate, that allows high-resolution filtering of a spectrally broad source with a high degree of coherence. In addition to the known tendencies of indistinguishable photons to arrive together on the detector, we find that photons of different colors present the opposite characteristic of avoiding each others. We postulate that fermions can be similarly brought to exhibit positive (boson-like) correlations by frequency filtering. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents information on a study related to the use of serologic prenatal screening and protocols governing the diagnosis, prophylaxis and treatment of toxoplasmosis in pregnant women. All non-immune pregnant women were tested every 3 months throughout the term of the pregnancy to detect seroconversion to toxoplasma infection. The laboratory techniques used to detect fetal infection were serological analysis of fetal blood and polymerase chain reaction amplification of Toxoplasma gondii DNA in fetal blood and amniotic fluid. Twenty of the 26 infected mothers received specific treatment during pregnancy. The rate of maternal fetal transmission was 15% in treated mothers and 50% in untreated mothers.
