Endometrial stem/progenitor cells are a type of stem cells with the ability to self-renew and differentiate into multiple cell types. They exist in the endometrium and form niches with their neighbor cells and extracellular matrix. The interaction between endometrial stem/progenitor cells and niches plays an important role in maintaining, repairing, and regenerating the endometrial structure and function. This review will discuss the characteristics and functions of endometrial stem/progenitor cells and their niches, the mechanisms of their interaction, and their roles in endometrial regeneration and diseases. Plants have diverse and vast niches colonized by endophytic microorganisms that promote the wellbeing of host plant. These microbes inhabit internal plant tissues with no signs of ill health. Bacterial endophytes from many plants have been isolated and characterized due to their beneficial roles however their diversity in leguminous plants still remain unexploited. Diversity of bacterial endophytes isolated from Sesbania sesban, Leucaena diversifolia and Calliandra calothyrsus was assessed using morphological and molecular characteristics. A total of 27 pure isolates were recovered from C. Calothyrsus, L. diversifolia and S. sesban constituting 44.4%, 33.3% and 22.2% from the leaves, stems and roots respectively. The isolates differentiated into Gram positive and negative with rods and spherical shapes. Analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed 8 closely related bacterial genera that consisted of Bacillus (33.3%), Staphylococcus (22.2%), Alcaligens (11.1%), Pantoea (11.1%), Xanthomonas,and Sphingomonas (7.4%) each. Others included Acinetobacter, and Pseudomonas at 3.7% each. Bacterial endophytes of genus bacillus were isolated from all the three plants. These results indicate the presence of high diversity of endophytic bacteria associated with the different parts of L. diversifolia, S. sesban and C. salothyrsus growing in western Kenya. The relationship between biology and the psy disciplines (psychology, psychiatry, and psychotherapy) is a complex one. Many scholars have criticized how these disciplines have been biologized in the 20th century, especially since the emergence of psychopharmacology, neuroscience, and genetic research. However, biology is not just a laboratory-based science of chemical compounds, scanners, and DNA sequencing, but also a field science based on observations of organisms in their milieus. In this paper, we draw a contrast between laboratory-based biology with a focus on brains and genes, and an ecology-based biology with a focus on lives and niches. Our argument is philosophical in nature – building partly on Wittgenstein as a "philosopher of life" – to the effect that the psy sciences need not just less biologization of the former kind, but also more biologization of the latter kind to avoid a prevalent mentalism. Eccrine sweat gland (SG) restrictedly exists in mouse foot pads indicating that mouse plantar dermis (PD) contains the SG lineage-restricted niches. However, it is still unclear how these niches can affect stem cell fate towards SG. In this study, we tried to find the key cues by which stem cells sense and interact with the SG lineage-specific niches both in vivo and in vitro. Firstly, we used transcriptomics RNA sequencing analysis to screen differentially expressed genes between SG cells and epidermal stem cells (ES), and used proteomic analysis to screen differentially expressed proteins between PD and dorsal dermis (DD). Notch1 was found differentially expressed in both gene and protein levels, and was closely related to SG morphogenesis based on Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis. Secondly, the spatial-temporal changes of Notch1 during embryonic and post-natal development of SG were detected. Thirdly, mouse mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were introduced into SG-like cells in vitro in order to further verify the possible roles of Notch1. Results revealed that Notch1 was continuously down-regulated along with the process of SG morphogenesis in vivo, and also along with the process that MSCs differentiated into SG-like cells in vitro. Hence, we suggest that Notch1 possibly acts as with roles of "gatekeeper" during SG development and regulates the interactions between stem cells and the SG lineage-specific niches. Microbial taxonomy dealing with identification and characterization of prokaryotes like bacteria and archaea has always been a major area of research all over the world. Exploring diversity of microbes and description of novel species with different genes and secondary compounds is of utmost importance for better future and sustenance of life. India having an enormous range of ecosystems and diverse species inhabiting these niches is considered to be one of the richest biodiversity regions of the world. During the last decade, with newer methodologies and better technology, the prokaryotic taxonomy from India has extended our inventory of microbial communities in specific niches. However, there still exist some limitations in classifying the microbes from India as compared to that is done world-over. This review enlists the taxonomic description of novel taxa of prokaryotes from India in the past decade. A total of 378 new bacterial species have been classified from different habitats in India in the last ten years and no descriptions of archaeal species is documented till date. The performance, expansion and contribution of tree lucerne has not reached to its full potential due to a number of factors. An action on-farm research was conducted with men and women farm households to (a) compare survival and growth of tree lucerne across contrasting sites and growing niches, and (b) identify the key determinants of tree lucerne survival and growth on farms in the crop-livestock systems. The research was conducted in eight research kebeles (the smallest administrative unit in the country) of the four Africa RISING (Africa Research in Sustainable Intensification for the Next Generation) project sites. Eight farmer research groups (FRGs) were formed in consultation with the group members. Each FRG consisted of 25-30 men and women farmers representing a range of social groups. Each farmer participating in the research received on average 50 seedlings. A total of 253 farmers participated in the research. After planting, data on survival, growth, root collar diameter and management were collected at 9 months using simple field monitoring tools. A total of ten sample plants were selected from the field of each farmer who planted tree lucerne, and these were labelled for continuous growth measurements. The on-farm research measurement was supplemented by cross-sectional survey data collected from a sample of FRG member households in the eight research kebeles. A combination of descriptive statistics, multivariate statistical techniques and econometric models were used for data analysis. The results of the study show that percentage survival on-farm were significantly higher for tree lucerne planted in backyards than those planted in outfields and for middle-resource class households. Household size, access to reliable water supply, and management factors—including fencing and watering planted-seedlings, mulching during dry periods, clean spot weeding and applying organic fertilizers—significantly enhanced survival and growth of tree lucerne in the planting sites. Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most lethal brain tumor also due to malignant and therapy-resistant GBM stem cells (GSCs) that are localized in protecting hypoxic GSC niches. Some members of the cysteine cathepsin family of proteases have been found to be upregulated in GBM. Cathepsin K gene expression is highly elevated in GBM tissue versus normal brain and it has been suggested to regulate GSC migration out of the niches. Here, we investigated the cellular distribution of cathepsins B, X and K in GBM tissue and whether these cathepsins are co-localized in GSC niches. Therefore, we determined expression of these cathepsins in serial paraffin sections of 14 human GBM samples and serial cryostat sections of two samples using immunohistochemistry and metabolic mapping of cathepsin activity using selective fluorogenic substrates. We detected cathepsins B, X and K in peri-arteriolar GSC niches in 9 out of 16 GBM samples, which were defined by co-expression of the GSC marker CD133, the niche marker stromal-derived factor-1α (SDF-1α) and smooth muscle actin as a marker for arterioles. The expression of cathepsin B and X was detected in stromal cells and cancer cells throughout the GBM sections, whereas cathepsin K expression was more restricted to arteriole-rich regions in the GBM sections. Metabolic mapping showed that cathepsin B, but not cathepsin K is active in GSC niches. On the basis of these findings, it is concluded that cathepsins B, X and K have distinct functions in GBM and that cathepsin K is the most likely GSC niche-related cathepsin of the three cathepsins investigated. Recently, the concept of niches as sites of tumor progression, invasion, and angiogenesis in glioblastoma (GB) has been extensively debated. Niches, considered the sites in which glioblastoma stem cells (GSCs) reside, have been classified as perivascular, perinecrotic, and invasive. However, from a neuropathological point of view, it is not easy to establish when a tumor structure can be considered a niche. The relevant literature has been reviewed in the light of our recent experience on the subject. As for perinecrotic niches, the occurrence of GSCs around necrosis is interpreted as triggered by hypoxia through HIF-1α. Our alternative hypothesis is that, together with progenitors, they are the cell constituents of hyper-proliferative areas of GB, where perinecrotic niches have developed, and they would, therefore, represent the remnants of GSCs/progenitors spared by the developing necrosis. Perivascular structures originate from both transport vessels and exchange vessels, i.e., venules, arterioles, or the undefinable neo-formed small vessels, but only those in which a direct contact between GSCs/progenitors and endothelial cells occurs can be called niches. Both pericytes and microglia/macrophages play a role in niche function: Macrophages of blood origin invade GB only after the appearance of "mother vessels" with consequent blood-brain barrier disruption. The emergence of carbapenem-resistant enterobacterial species poses a serious threat to public health worldwide. OXA-48-type carbapenem-hydrolyzing class D β-lactamases are widely distributed among Enterobacteriaceae, with significant geographical differences. To date, 11 OXA-48-like variants have been identified, with classical OXA-48 being the most widespread. These enzymes show high-level hydrolytic activity against penicillins and low-level hydrolysis towards carbapenems. Since the first description of the OXA-48 carbapenemase in Turkey, bacterial strains producing the enzyme have been extensively reported in nosocomial and community outbreaks in many parts of the word, particularly in the Mediterranean area and European countries. The rapid spread of Enterobacteriaceae producing OXA-48-like enzymes in different ecosystems has become a serious issue recently. The number of reservoirs for such organisms is increasing, not only in hospitals, but also in the community, among animals (e.g., livestock, companion animals, and wildlife) and in the environment. This review aims to summarize the main characteristics of the OXA-48-type carbapenemases, covering genetic and enzymatic traits, their epidemiology, clonality and associated genes, correlation with extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) or plasmidic AmpC (pAmpC) in different bacterial species worldwide. Hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells reside predominantly in the bone marrow. They supply billions of mature blood cells every day during life through maturation into multilineage progenitors and self-renewal. Newly produced mature cells serve to replenish the pool of circulating blood cells at the end of their life-span. These mature blood cells and a few hematopoietic progenitors normally exit the bone marrow through the sinusoidal vessels, a specialized venous vascular system that spreads throughout the bone marrow. Many signals regulate the coordinated mobilization of hematopoietic cells from the bone marrow to the circulation. In this review, we present recent advances on hematopoiesis and hematopoietic cell mobilization with a focus on the role of Ephrin ligands and their Eph receptors. These constitute a large family of transmembrane ligands and receptors that play critical roles in development and postnatally. For hepatic venous outflow obstruction, alcoholic liver injury, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, the term "centrizonal injury disease" (CID) is used, because injury patterns in all three entities are similar. To elucidate CID-related CD34+ vessels (sinusoids and/or microvessels) and keratin 7+ hepatocytes (K7+ Hs), we examined a series of 41 liver tissue specimens obtained at autopsy and surgery, consisting of 32 CID cases and 9 controls. Centrizonal scars were found in 21 CID cases, and these were associated with centrizonal CD34+ vessels (P = 0.009) and centrizonal K7+ Hs (P < 0.001). Centrizonal coexistence of CD34+ vessels and K7+ Hs was observed in 22 CID cases (P = 0.057). These findings suggest close centrizonal proximity of scar, CD34+ vessels, and K7+ Hs in CID. However, centrizonal K7+ Hs without CD34+ vessels were observed in 21 CID cases. CD34+ vessels were detectable in all control samples and may represent the normal vascular bed. In 29 CID cases, centrizonal CD34+ vessel density was higher than that in controls. However, most appeared to be continuous with periportal and/or interlobular CD34+ vessels, and those CD34+ vessels restricted to centrizonal regions were focal and limited in seven CID cases. Centrizonal CD34+ vessels were associated with venoportal adhesions (P = 0.027). Our findings suggest that CID induces both venoportal adhesion-related structural distortion and expansion of normally present CD34+ vessels, which may result in increased centrizonal CD34+ vessel density. Debate remains on the contributions of niche and neutral processes in structuring biological communities. Temporal variation in the extent to which these two processes may jointly operate makes the problem of resolving their roles even more daunting. Here, we gain insight into this problem by using deterministic and stochastic models of competitors to investigate how the occurrence of rare niches, in what is usually a neutrally structured community, affects species diversity. Rare niches are modeled by allowing each species access to unique resources, which occur with temporal variability. While results from the deterministic model are clear (rare niches provide stable coexistence to otherwise neutral competitors), demographic stochasticity complicates this picture. Stochastic rare niche models show parameter regimes where increases in rare niches actually increase extinction risk by amplifying the variance in population counts. We also use our stochastic model to evaluate the effectiveness of current empirical methods in resolving the difference between rare niche and neutral systems. We find that in many cases, stochastic variation makes niche and neutral systems indistinguishable, allowing for the possibility of niche systems to masquerade as neutral ones. We consider interacting population systems of predator-prey type, presenting four models of control strategies for epidemics among the prey. In particular to contain the transmissible disease, safety niches are considered, assuming they lessen the disease spread, but do not protect prey from predators. This represents a novelty with respect to standard ecosystems where the refuge prevents predators' attacks. The niche is assumed either to protect the healthy individuals, or to hinder the infected ones to get in contact with the susceptibles, or finally to reduce altogether contacts that might lead to new cases of the infection. In addition, a standard culling procedure is also analyzed. The effectiveness of the different strategies is compared. Probably, the environments providing a place where disease carriers cannot come in contact with the healthy individuals, or where their contact rates are lowered, seem preferable for disease containment. Haematopoietic stem cell (HSC) niches provide an environment essential for life-long HSC function. Intense investigation of HSC niches both feed off and drive technology development to increase our capability to assay functionally defined cells with high resolution. A major driving force behind the desire to understand the basic biology of HSC niches is the clear implications for clinical therapies. Here, with particular emphasis on cell type-specific deletion of SCL and CXCL12, we focus on unresolved issues on HSC niches, framed around some very recent advances and novel discoveries on the extrinsic regulation of HSC maintenance. Niche differentiation is a common explanation for high ectomycorrhizal diversity. In monocultures and on small spatial scales, the number of variable factors that may provide niches decreases. Still, even in the restricted volume of a soil core, typically more than one ectomycorrhizal species is found. We tested the hypothesis that roots of different individual beech genotypes provide niches on a small spatial scale in a pure beech ( Fagus sylvatica L.) stand in the North-eastern Lowlands of Germany. Fourteen ectomycorrhizal species, as determined by ITS sequencing and phylograms were patchily distributed along an 81 m long transect with ten transect points. All root segments in the three species richest soil cores and the surrounding beeches were genotyped by microsatellite PCR. In each of the three soil cores, roots of two host genotypes were present that corresponded to the two closest mature trees. We found that the different root genotypes did not carry different sets of ectomycorrhizal species even at the high species resolution provided through our study. Therefore, the hypothesis of tree genotypes contributing to ectomycorrhizal biodiversity at the analyzed beech stand has to be rejected. Exploration types and stochastic processes are discussed as alternative explanations for the species richness and distributions in the analyzed soil cores. Microorganisms colonize the surfaces of plant roots, leaves, and flowers known as the rhizosphere, phyllosphere, and anthosphere. These spheres differ largely in a number of factors that may determine the ability of microbes to establish themselves and to grow in these habitats. In this article, we focus on volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by plants, and we discuss their effects on microbial colonizers, with an emphasis on bacteria. We present examples of how growth-inhibiting properties and mechanisms of VOCs such as terpenoids, benzenoid compounds, aliphatics, and sulfur containing compounds prevent bacterial colonization at different spheres, in antagonism with their role as carbon-sources that support the growth of different bacterial taxa. The notion that VOCs represent important factors that define bacterial niches is further supported by results for representatives of two bacterial genera that occupy strongly diverging niches based on scent emissions of different plant species and organs. Bacteria are known to either positively or negatively affect plant fitness and to interfere with plant-animal interactions. Thus, bacteria and other microbes may select for VOCs, enabling plants to control microbial colonizers on their surfaces, thereby promoting the growth of mutualists and preventing the establishment of detrimental microbes. The same evolutionary forces that cause diversification in sexual eukaryotes are expected to cause diversification in bacteria. However, in bacteria, the wider variety of mechanisms for gene exchange (or lack thereof) increases the range of expected diversity patterns compared to those of sexual organisms. Two parallel concepts for bacterial speciation have developed, based on ecological divergence or barriers to recombination in turn. Recent evidence from DNA sequence data shows that both processes can generate independently evolving groups that are equivalent to sexual species and that represent separate arenas within which recombination (when it occurs), selection and drift occur. It remains unclear, however, how often different processes act in concert to generate simple units of diversity, or whether a more complex model of diversity is required, specifying hierarchical levels at which different cohesive processes operate. We advocate an integrative approach that evaluates the effects of multiple evolutionary forces on diversity patterns. There is also great potential for laboratory studies of bacterial evolution that test evolutionary mechanisms inferred from population genetic analyses of multi-locus and genome sequence data. Domestic energy use accounts for more than a quarter of CO emissions in the UK. Traditional approaches to energy reduction look at direct emissions savings, and recommend insulation and efficiency as more cost-effective than microgeneration. However, microgeneration has indirect, 'soft' benefits and could play a significant role in emissions reduction. Current uptake of microgeneration in the UK is low, with various barriers-economic, technical, cultural, behavioural and institutional-both to uptake and to maximising energy and emissions savings once installed. Subsidies and spreading information alone do not guarantee maximising uptake, and even if successful, this is not enough to maximise savings. The industry focuses on maximising sales, with no incentives to ensure best installations and use; householders do not have access to the best information, and user behaviour does not maximise energy and emission savings. This is related to a broader state of socio-technical 'lock-in' in domestic energy use; there's a lack of connection between personal behaviour and energy consumption, let alone global climate change. This suggests that a major cultural-behavioural shift is needed to reduce energy/emissions in the home. Transition theory and strategic niche management provide insights into possible systemic change and a suitable framework for future policies, such as supporting a variety of radically innovative niches, both technological and social. Microgeneration, properly employed, has the potential to play a part in such a transition by increasing awareness and energy literacy and empowering people to seriously engage in energy debates as producers, as well as consumers, of energy. This deeper understanding and heightened responsibility are crucial in a shift toward bottom-up emission-reducing behaviour change and better acceptance of top-down energy-saving policy measures, as part of a new domestic energy paradigm. The implications for policy are that, as well as supporting the technologies, it needs to support existing niches and to develop new niche experiments. Policy needs to consider how to promote empowerment and responsibility and support or even develop new energy sector models; this will involve a range of stakeholders and multiple governance levels, not just national incentive schemes. The putative existence of a cancer stem cell niche consisting of bi-directional stromal and stem cell secreting factors that trigger cancer stem cell growth and proliferation has been hypothesized in the nervous and hematopoietic systems. In light of this theory, it has been proposed that embryonic stem cell microenvironments, upon interactions with cancer stem cells, may reprogram cancer cells resulting in a substantial inhibition of tumor cell properties. Here, we discuss emerging data that support this novel concept of cancer inhibitory factors produced in the context of embryonic microenvironments as well as by embryonic stem cells (ESCs). Marketers have long advocated the use of ecological theory to study markets, but the abstract definitions of key constructs have hampered empirical applications. We take a first step in applying ecological theory to product markets by quantifying concepts such as niches, niche breadth, and niche overlap. We propose a new approach for measuring competitive intensity and identifying competitive submarkets. This measure defines competition between brands as the extent to which brands compete for the same customers. The approach is suitable for both durable and nondurable goods, for markets with many brands, and it can be used to assess competition between existing and hypothetical brands. The significance of fungi in the marine environment is poorly known when compared with the bacteria. Based on information available on bacteria and fungi in the sea and their structural characteristics, the various niches where the latter may play important roles is speculated upon in this article. Among the 3 niches discussed, the fungi, including thraustochytrids may be significant endobionts in substrates such as dead and living plants and calcareous shells. Substantial information is already available on fungi in decaying salt marsh grass and mangrove leaves, seedlings and wood and on parasites in macro- and microalgae. The need to investigate fungi as epibionts on surfaces of various organic and inorganic substrates and also sediments has been stressed.
