Microwave imaging method for breast cancer detection creates images of the electrical properties distribution of the breast tissue. The quality of the images depends on the accuracy of the forward model and of the inverse algorithm. This paper analyzes the effect of the dispersive biological tissue resulting from different mixtures of adipose and glandular tissue in the microwave frequency range, and also the effect of the heterogeneity of the biological media on the forward simulation in obtaining accurate tumour detection with microwave breast imaging. In order to evaluate the dispersive characteristics of biological tissue in the breast phantom, the numerical frequency domain finite difference time domain (FD)2TD method is employed to calculate the fields.
