Magnetic reconnection is a universal process in space, astrophysical, and laboratory plasmas. It alters magnetic field topology and results in energy release to the plasma. Here we report the experimental results of a pure electron outflow in magnetic reconnection, which is not accompanied with ion flows. By controlling an applied magnetic field in a laser produced plasma, we have constructed an experiment that magnetizes the electrons but not the ions. This allows us to isolate the electron dynamics from the ions. Collective Thomson scattering measurements reveal the electron Alfvénic outflow without ion outflow. The resultant plasmoid and whistler waves are observed with the magnetic induction probe measurements. We observe the unique features of electron-scale magnetic reconnection simultaneously in laser produced plasmas, including global structures, local plasma parameters, magnetic field, and waves. Turbulence is ubiquitous in the universe and in fluid dynamics. It influences a wide range of high energy density systems, from inertial confinement fusion to astrophysical-object evolution. Understanding this phenomenon is crucial, however, due to limitations in experimental and numerical methods in plasma systems, a complete description of the turbulent spectrum is still lacking. Here, we present the measurement of a turbulent spectrum down to micron scale in a laser-plasma experiment. We use an experimental platform, which couples a high power optical laser, an x-ray free-electron laser and a lithium fluoride crystal, to study the dynamics of a plasma flow with micrometric resolution (~1μm) over a large field of view (>1 mm2). After the evolution of a Rayleigh–Taylor unstable system, we obtain spectra, which are overall consistent with existing turbulent theory, but present unexpected features. This work paves the way towards a better understanding of numerous systems, as it allows the direct comparison of experimental results, theory and numerical simulations. Opioids, such as morphine and fentanyl, are widely used as effective analgesics for the treatment of acute and chronic pain. In addition, the opioid system has a key role in the rewarding effects of morphine, ethanol, cocaine and various other drugs. Although opioid sensitivity is well known to vary widely among individual subjects, several candidate genetic polymorphisms reported so far are not sufficient for fully understanding the wide range of interindividual differences in human opioid sensitivity. By conducting a multistage genome-wide association study (GWAS) in healthy subjects, we found that genetic polymorphisms within a linkage disequilibrium block that spans 2q33.3-2q34 were strongly associated with the requirements for postoperative opioid analgesics after painful cosmetic surgery. The C allele of the best candidate single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), rs2952768, was associated with more analgesic requirements, and consistent results were obtained in patients who underwent abdominal surgery. In addition, carriers of the C allele in this SNP exhibited less vulnerability to severe drug dependence in patients with methamphetamine dependence, alcohol dependence, and eating disorders and a lower 'Reward Dependence' score on a personality questionnaire in healthy subjects. Furthermore, the C/C genotype of this SNP was significantly associated with the elevated expression of a neighboring gene, CREB1. These results show that SNPs in this locus are the most potent genetic factors associated with human opioid sensitivity known to date, affecting both the efficacy of opioid analgesics and liability to severe substance dependence. We implemented a two-step approach to detect potential predictor gene variants for neuroleptic-induced tardive dyskinesia (TD) in schizophrenic subjects. First, we screened associations by using a genome-wide (Illumina HumanHapCNV370) SNP array in 61 Japanese schizophrenia patients with treatment-resistant TD and 61 Japanese schizophrenia patients without TD. Next, we performed a replication analysis in 36 treatment-resistant TD and 138 non-TD subjects. An association of an SNP in the DPP6 (dipeptidyl peptidase-like protein-6) gene, rs6977820, the most promising association identified by the screen, was significant in the replication sample (allelic P=0.008 in the replication sample, allelic P=4.6 × 10−6, odds ratio 2.32 in the combined sample). The SNP is located in intron-1 of the DPP6 gene and the risk allele was associated with decreased DPP6 gene expression in the human postmortem prefrontal cortex. Chronic administration of haloperidol increased Dpp6 expression in mouse brains. DPP6 is an auxiliary subunit of Kv4 and regulates the properties of Kv4, which regulates the activity of dopaminergic neurons. Collisionless shocks in counter-streaming plasmas, created by the high-power laser system Gekko XII HIPER, are investigated. The shock structure and density are measured by optical diagnostics such as shadowgraphy, interferometry, and streaked interferometry. The plasma density and temperature are estimated from self-emission measurements with visible light by streaked optical pyrometer and gated optical imager. To search DNA methylation difference between monozygotic twins discordant for bipolar disorder, we applied a comprehensive genome scan method, methylation-sensitive representational difference analysis (MS-RDA) to lymphoblastoid cells derived from the twins. MS-RDA isolated 10 DNA fragments derived from 5′ region of known genes/ESTs. Among these 10 regions, four regions showed DNA methylation differences between bipolar twin and control co-twin confirmed by bisulfite sequencing. We performed a case–control study of DNA methylation status of these four regions by pyrosequencing. Two regions, upstream regions of spermine synthase (SMS) and peptidylprolyl isomerase E-like (PPIEL) (CN265253), showed aberrant DNA methylation status in bipolar disorder. SMS, a gene on X chromosome, showed significantly higher DNA methylation level in female patients with bipolar disorder compared with control females. However, there was no difference of mRNA expression. In PPIEL, DNA methylation level was significantly lower in patients with bipolar II disorder than in controls. The expression level of PPIEL was significantly higher in bipolar II disorder than in controls. We found strong inverse correlation between gene expression and DNA methylation levels of PPIEL. Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP, ADCYAP1: adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide 1), a neuropeptide with neurotransmission modulating activity, is a promising schizophrenia candidate gene. Here, we provide evidence that genetic variants of the genes encoding PACAP and its receptor, PAC1, are associated with schizophrenia. We studied the effects of the associated polymorphism in the PACAP gene on neurobiological traits related to risk for schizophrenia. This allele of the PACAP gene, which is overrepresented in schizophrenia patients, was associated with reduced hippocampal volume and poorer memory performance. Abnormal behaviors in PACAP knockout mice, including elevated locomotor activity and deficits in prepulse inhibition of the startle response, were reversed by treatment with an atypical antipsychotic, risperidone. In this paper, experimental results on X-ray and proton radiography of shock compressed matter are presented. It has been performed at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) using three long pulse beams to generate a shock wave in a multi-layer foil and a short pulse beam to create either an X-ray or protons source for a transverse radiography. Depending on the probe material (aluminium or carbon foam) a Molybdenum Kα source or a proton beam are used. Density data of the shocked aluminium, in the multimagabar regime are presented. We present experiments performed with the LULI2000 nanosecond laser facility. We generated plasma jets by using specific designed target. The main measured quantities related to the jet such as its propagation velocity, temperature and emissive radius evolution are presented. Serotonin transporter gene (SLC6A4) is one of the most promising candidate genes for psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder (BP). Two functional polymorphisms, 5HTTLPR and 5HTTVNTR, have been a focus for genetic association analyses; however, no conclusive results have been obtained. We conducted, 1) a mutation search of SLC6A4, 2) LD mapping to select ‘tagging’ markers (10 SNPs and 5HTTVNTR, while 5HTTLPR was treated as an independent marker because of its allelic form), and 3) association analysis of these ‘tagging’ markers and independent markers (5HTTLPR and Asn605Lys) with SCZ and BP in Japanese patients. In this mutation search, a nonsynonymous SNP, Asn605Lys, was detected. No associations of ‘tagging’ markers and independent markers with such conditions were found. These results indicate that SLC6A4 might not play a major role in SCZ and BP in Japanese patients, a finding that agrees with both the common disease-common variant hypothesis and common disease-rare variant hypothesis. Several studies indicate that the μ-opioid receptor plays a role in addiction not only to opiate drugs but also to alcohol and non-opiate addictive drugs. Our studies aim to reveal the associations between gene polymorphisms and methamphetamine (MAP) dependence/psychosis. We newly identified several polymorphisms and four substantial linkage disequilibrium (LD) blocks in the μ-opioid receptor (OPRM1) gene. We found significant differences in both genotype and allele frequencies of the single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) IVS2+G691C between control (n=232) and MAP-dependent/psychotic patients (n=128). There was also a significant association between IVS2+G691C and patients with transient psychosis. Calcineurin, one of the serine/threonine protein phosphatase, comprises more than 1% of the total protein content in brain. This evidence points towards important roles of calcineurin in neural function. Miyakawa et al. reported that forebrain-specific calcineurin knockout mice showed the behavioral abnormalities that are often observed in schizophrenia patients. Based on this evidence, they suggested that calcineurin dysfunction could be involved in schizophrenia pathogenesis. Thereafter this report, Gerber et al. performed transmission disequilibrium test (TDT) studies and showed an evidence for a nominally significant over-transmission of a common haplotype of the human calcineurin A γ subunit gene (PPP3CC). We performed association analysis of PPP3CC in Japanese sample of 457 schizophrenia cases and 429 controls. To our regret, we could not confirm the association with Japanese schizophrenia to PPP3CC including core at-risk haplotype. Psychostimulant use disorder and schizophrenia have a substantial genetic basis. Evidence from human and animal studies on the involvement of the?-aminobutyric acid (GABA) system in methamphetamine (METH) use disorder and schizophrenia is mounting. As we tested for the association of the human GABAA receptor gamma 2 subunit gene (GABRG2) with each diagnostic group, we used a case-control design with a set of 178 subjects with METH use disorder, 288 schizophrenics and 288 controls. First, we screened 96 controls and identified six SNPs in GABRG2, three of whom we newly reported. Next, we selected two SNPs, 315C>T and 1128+99C>A, as representatives of the linkage disequilibrium blocks for further case-control association analysis. Although no associations were found in either allelic or genotypic frequencies, we detected a haplotypic association in GABRG2 with METH use disorder, but not with schizophrenia. The magnetic and structural properties of MBE-grown films of Zn1− xCr xTe were investigated. The magnetization versus magnetic field ( M–H) measurement of Zn1− xCr xTe ( x = 0.01–0.17) showed clear hysteresis loop at low temperatures. The ferromagnetic transition temperature ( TC) estimated from the Arrott-plot analysis increased almost linearly with the Cr composition ( x) up to 275 K at x = 0.17. However, in the magnetization versus temperature ( M–T) measurement, the irreversibility between the zero-field-cooled (ZFC) and field-cooled (FC) processes was observed. This is typically observed in the magnetic random system such as spin-glass or superparamagnetic phase. In the high resolution transmission microscopy (HRTEM) observations, structural defects such as stacking faults and polycrystalline-like structure were observed at high Cr compositions, whereas any apparent precipitates of different phases were not seen in all the range of Cr compositions examined. Two research groups have recently reported a significant association between schizophrenia and genetic variants of Frizzled-3 (FZD3) gene. We examined a possible association in a Japanese sample of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, unipolar depression and controls with four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), tested in previous reports. We failed to find significant association in the four SNPs or haplotype analysis. The FZD3 gene might not play a role in conferring susceptibility to major psychosis in our sample. Rationale: Tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) is a coenzyme of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH), rate-limiting enzymes of monoamine biosynthesis. According to the monoamine hypothesis of depression, antidepressants will restore the function of the brain monoaminergic system, and BH4 concentration. Objective: To investigate the effects of fluvoxamine on BH4 levels and dopamine (DA) and serotonin (5-HT) turnover in the mesoprefrontal system, incorporating two risk factors of depression, social isolation and acute environmental change. Methods: Male ddY mice (6W) were divided into two housing groups, i.e. group-housing (eight animals per cage; 35 days), and isolation-housing (one per cage; 35 days), SC injected with fluvoxamine (20 or 40 mg/kg; days 29-35), and exposed to 20-min novelty stress (day 35). The levels of BH4, DA, homovanilic acid (HVA), 5-HT, and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) were measured in the prefrontal cortex and midbrain. Results: Under the group-housing condition, novelty stress significantly increased BH4 levels in both regions, and the HVA/DA ratio in the midbrain, whereas it did not change any parameters in either region under the isolation-housing condition. In the prefrontal cortex, fluvoxamine significantly decreased the 5-HIAA/5-HT ratio under the group-housing condition, and BH4 levels and the HVA/ DA ratio under the isolation-housing condition. In the midbrain, fluvoxamine significantly decreased all parameters, except for an increasing in the 5-HIAA/5-HT ratio under the isolation-housing condition. Conclusion: Isolation-housing suppressed the increase of BH4 levels and DA turnover elicited by novelty stress. Fluvoxamine suppressed BH4 levels, and DA and 5-HT turnover. Summary. Two research groups have thus far reported a significant association between schizophrenia and a promoter polymorphism (-308G > A) of the gene encoding tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), while contradictive negative results have also been reported. We examined the possible association in a Japanese sample of 297 schizophrenia cases and 458 controls. Allele frequencies of both the patients and controls were very low (1.5% and 0.8%, respectively), and the difference was not statistically significant. We conclude that the effect of the -308G > A polymorphism on the development of schizophrenia is, if any, weak and the majority of Japanese schizophrenics are unrelated to the -308G > A polymorphism of the TNF-α gene. A human serotonin (5-HT)2C receptor gene polymorphism leads to the substitution of cysteine for serine at codon 23 (Cys23Ser); the frequency of the Ser23 allele in unrelated Caucasians is approximately 0.13. In the present study, we assessed whether Cys23Ser could affect receptor function. The two alleles were functionally compared following expression in COS-7 cells. The constitutive activity of the receptor in an in situ reconstitution system was also evaluated following expression of each allele in Sf9 cells. Using radioligands, Ser23-expressed membranes showed reduced high-affinity binding to meta-chlorophenylpiperazine (m-CPP) and 5-HT. Although the amplitude of the 5-HT-induced intracellular Ca2+ peak did not differ between the alleles, Ser23 required higher 5-HT concentrations to elicit the same response. These differences might be due to more extensive desensitization in the Ser23 form. In the in situ reconstitution system, the 5-HT2C receptor displayed considerable constitutive activity, with the Ser23 allele being significantly higher in this regard than the Cys23 form. After prolonged serum deprivation in order to resensitize the receptor, four of the 15 cells expressing Ser23 showed abnormally higher m-CPP-induced sensitivity of the Ca2+ response. These results indicate that the Ser23 allele may be constitutively more active than Cys23. Two common serotonin transporter (SERT) untranslated region gene variants have been intensively studied, but remain inconclusively linked to depression and other neuropsychiatric disorders. We now report an uncommon coding region SERT mutation, Ile425Val, in two unrelated families with OCD and other serotonin-related disorders. Six of the seven family members with this mutation had OCD (n=5) or obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (n=1) and some also met diagnostic criteria for multiple other disorders (Asperger's syndrome, social phobia, anorexia nervosa, tic disorder and alcohol and other substance abuse/dependence). Risperidone is a widely used atypical antipsychotic with certain advantages over typical antipsychotics. Although variations in the efficacy of treatment with risperidone have been observed, no specific predictable marker has been identified as of yet. In all, 73 Japanese patients with schizophrenia were given risperidone for 8 weeks, and clinical symptoms were evaluated using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). Six candidate polymorphisms (HTR2A -1438G>A, 102T>C, H452Y; DRD2 -141delC, Taq I A; COMT V158M) were genotyped. The diplotype configuration for each individual was estimated by the maximum-likelihood method. Multiple linear regressions were used to analyze the effects of these haplotypes/genotype and other prognostic factors on PANSS scale performance. After adjustment for the effects of patient-related variables, HTR2A diplotype and COMT genotype, as well as other potential prognostic factors, did not significantly influence the clinical performance. A DRD2 haplotype tended to correlate with better clinical performance. Compared with patients who had Ins-A2/Ins-A2 diplotype (n=25), PANSS total scores of patients with Ins-A2/Del-A1 diplotype (n=10) showed 40% greater improvement (P=0.03). The PANSS total scores of patients with HTR2A A-T/A-T diplotype (n=22) tended to show 15% worse improvement compared with A-T/G-C diplotype (n=33) (P=0.06). These results should be treated with caution because of limitations due to small sample size, heterogeneity of patients with respect to past antipsychotic use history, and no correction for multiple corrections. Aims/hypothesis. Type 1 diabetes mellitus is an autoimmune disease characterized by dysfunction and destruction of the pancreatic beta cells. Interleukin-1β (IL-1β) has been reported to cause suppression of insulin secretion from pancreatic islets via induction of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) followed by nitric oxide (NO) production. In this study, we investigated the effects of inhibition of iNOS on pancreatic beta-cell dysfunction in non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice and IL-1β-treated isolated rat pancreatic islets using a novel specific inhibitor, ONO-1714. Methods. Female NOD mice which received subcutaneous infusion of ONO-1714 (4 µg/kg/day or 40 µg/kg/day) from 10 to 14 weeks after birth were compared with untreated NOD mice. In addition, pancreatic islets were isolated from Sprague-Dawley rats and cultured for 24 h with IL-1β (100 U/mL) with or without ONO-1714 or the non-selective NOS inhibitor NG-monomethyl-L-arginine (L-NMMA). We measured insulin secretion and insulin content of the islets by ELISA, iNOS mRNA expression by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, and NO generation by Griess Reagent System. Results. Hyperglycaemia was observed in NOD mice. ONO-1714 treatment blunted this increase and tended to preserve insulin secretion, although body weight increase did not differ between the groups. Insulitis was also attenuated in the ONO-1714-administered group compared to the control group. Furthermore, in isolated rat pancreatic islets ONO-1714 prevented IL-1β-induced inhibition of insulin secretion, this protection being evident in much lower concentrations than with L-NMMA. While ONO-1714 completely inhibited IL-1β-induced NO production, it did not reduce expression of islet iNOS mRNA. Conclusion/interpretation. We report on a 65-year-old man who received asynchronous bilateral adrenalectomy for adrenal metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma. Fifteen months after curative resection of right hepatic lobe for hepatocellular carcinoma, a metastatic lesion of the left adrenal gland was detected and left adrenalectomy was performed. Ten months after the second operation, a metastatic lesion in the right adrenal gland, associated with tumor thrombus in the inferior vena cava, was revealed. Transcatheter arterial embolization of the arteries feeding the metastatic tumor was performed, but its effects were incomplete. As there was the tumor thrombus in the inferior vena cava and no other intrahepatic recurrence or extrahepatic metastasis was found, resection of the right adrenal gland with tumor thrombus, without the employment of veno-venous bypass, was performed, followed by postoperative hormonal supplementation. Changes in the patient's alpha-fetoprotein level were clinically useful for the detection of the metastatic lesions and the evaluation of therapeutic effects. Metastasis to adrenal gland from hepatocellular carcinoma should be actively managed, and the appropriate surgical treatment selected, if intrahepatic recurrence and/or other extrahepatic metastasis are controlled. To achieve higher curability and better outcome in patients with bilateral adrenal metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma, bilateral total adrenalectomy is indicated, accompanied by effective postoperative hormonal supplementation. The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) has been identified as a major circadian pacemaker. Methamphetamine has been shown to modify the behavior of circadian rhythms. We detected extracellular serotonin (5-HT) and its metabolite 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) in the SCN in freely moving rats, using a microdialysis method, to investigate biochemical effects of methamphetamine in the SCN. The acute effect of 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium ion (MPP), a neurotoxin derived from 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1, 2, 3, 6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP), was examined by the in vivo micro-dialysis technique. A dialysis cannula was implanted into rat striatum, and the changes in the concentrations of dopamine (DA), 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) and homovanillic acid (HVA), and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) in the perfusate every 20 min after administration of MPP were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection (HPLC-ED). After MPP administration the levels of DOPAC, HVA and 5-HIAA were markedly decreased. On the contrary the level of DA was markedly increased and reached a maximum 40 min after beginning of the MPP administration. By postmortem analysis of the striatal tissue MPP was proved to cause the inhibition of monoamine oxidase (MAO), especially MAO-B. Several different lines of evidence suggest that genes involved in serotonergic neurotransmission are factors in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. For example, 5HT[sub 5A] knockout mice revealed decreased locomotor response to lysergic diethylamide (LSD), which produces a psychotic-like state in healthy people. Recently, we reported a naturally occurring conservative Pro15Ser substitution in the 5-HT[sub 5A] receptor. Here, we evaluate whether this substitution is associated with schizophrenia in a sample including 249 unrelated Japanese schizophrenia patients and 253 unrelated controls. Patients and controls were genotyped for the Pro15Ser polymorphism by a PCR-RFLP assay. Ser15 allele frequencies were 0.07 in patients with schizophrenia and 0.02 in controls (x² = 17.42, df = 1, P < 0.0001). Thus, we detected a highly significant association of Pro15Ser to schizophrenia in a large population of Japanese schizophrenia patients and controls. Since case-control studies have an inherent potential for false-positive results due to population stratification, this finding is preliminary pending further studies, including studies using the transmission/disequilibrium test to eliminate stratification bias or control loci to assess ethnic matching of cases and controls. Seasonal variations in mood and behavior (seasonality) and seasonal affective disorder (SAD) have been attributed to seasonal fluctuations in brain serotonin (5HT), the short (s), as opposed to the long (l), allele of the 5-HT transporter linked polymorphism (5-HTTLPR) has been associated with neuroticism and depression. We hypothesized that this short allele would also be associated with SAD and with higher levels of seasonality. Ninety-seven SAD patients and 71 non-seasonal healthy controls with low seasonality levels were genotyped for 5-HTTLPR and compared statistically. Patients with SAD were less likely to have the l/l genotype (27.8% vs 47.9%; P < 0.01) and more likely to have the s allele (44.8% vs 32.4%; P < 0.02) as compared to controls. The three 5-HTTLPR genotypes were also differentially distributed in patients and controls (P < 0.03). The SAD patients with the l/l genotype had a lower mean seasonality score than did patients with the other two genotypes (mean ± s.d. = 15.3 ± 2.8 vs 17.1 ± 3.4 respectively; P < 0.02). The 5-HTTLPR short allele contributes to the trait of seasonality and is a risk factor for SAD, providing further evidence for a relationship between genetic variation in the 5-HT transporter (5HTT) and behavior. Water, methane, and ammonia are commonly considered to be the key components of the interiors of Uranus and Neptune. Modelling the planets' internal structure, evolution, and dynamo heavily relies on the properties of the complex mixtures with uncertain exact composition in their deep interiors. Therefore, characterising icy mixtures with varying composition at planetary conditions of several hundred gigapascal and a few thousand Kelvin is crucial to improve our understanding of the ice giants. In this work, pure water, a water-ethanol mixture, and a water-ethanol-ammonia "synthetic planetary mixture" (SPM) have been compressed through laser-driven decaying shocks along their principal Hugoniot curves up to 270, 280, and 260 GPa, respectively. Measured temperatures spanned from 4000 to 25000 K, just above the coldest predicted adiabatic Uranus and Neptune profiles (3000–4000 K) but more similar to those predicted by more recent models including a thermal boundary layer (7000–14000 K). The experiments were performed at the GEKKO XII and LULI2000 laser facilities using standard optical diagnostics (Doppler velocimetry and optical pyrometry) to measure the thermodynamic state and the shock-front reflectivity at two different wavelengths. The results show that water and the mixtures undergo a similar compression path under single shock loading in agreement with Density Functional Theory Molecular Dynamics (DFT-MD) calculations using the Linear Mixing Approximation (LMA). On the contrary, their shock-front reflectivities behave differently by what concerns both the onset pressures and the saturation values, with possible impact on planetary dynamos. Accretion processes play a crucial role in a wide variety of astrophysical systems. Of particular interest are magnetic cataclysmic variables, where, plasma flow is directed along the star's magnetic field lines onto its poles. A stationary shock is formed, several hundred kilometres above the stellar surface; a distance far too small to be resolved with today's telescopes. Here, we report the results of an analogous laboratory experiment which recreates this astrophysical system. The dynamics of the laboratory system are strongly influenced by the interplay of material, thermal, magnetic and radiative effects, allowing a steady shock to form at a constant distance from a stationary obstacle. Our results demonstrate that a significant amount of plasma is ejected in the lateral direction; a phenomenon that is under-estimated in typical magnetohydrodynamic simulations and often neglected in astrophysical models. High resolution X-ray imaging is crucial for many high energy density physics (HEDP) experiments. Recently developed techniques to improve resolution have, however, come at the cost of a decreased field of view. In this paper, an innovative experimental detector for X-ray imaging in the context of HEDP experiments with high spatial resolution, as well as a large field of view, is presented. The platform is based on coupling an X-ray backligther source with a Lithium Fluoride detector, characterized by its large dynamic range. A spatial resolution of 2 µm over a field of view greater than 2 mm2 is reported. The platform was benchmarked with both an X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) and an X-ray source produced by a short pulse laser. First, using a non-coherent short pulse laser-produced backlighter, reduced penumbra blurring, as a result of the large size of the X-ray source, is shown. Secondly, we demonstrate phase contrast imaging with a fully coherent monochromatic XFEL beam. The pathogenesis of schizophrenia is a hypothesized to be neurodevelopmental in nature. Recently, it has been reported that genetic variants around the gene neuregulin 1 (NRG1) are associated with schizophrenia in an Icelandic sample. The replications of this finding have been reported independently from Scottish population and Caucasians born in UK and Ireland. The at-risk haplotype was found to be over-represented in schizophrenics compared to controls. Here, we attempt to perform a replication of these results in our Japanese collection. We also describe PCR-RFLP and primer extension using dHPLC methods to detect these polymorphisms as conventional laboratory methods. Genotyping for NRG1 was performed for 607 Japanese schizophrenic patients and 515 controls. We found no association between each marker and schizophrenia. The estimated frequency of the core at-risk haplotype, which was enriched in the Scottish and Icelandic patients (10.2%, 14.4%) than in control individuals (5.9%, 7.6%), had no difference between Japanese patients (4.5%) and Japanese controls (4.3%). Mg-dependent and HCO-stimulated ATPase activity was highest in the brush border (microvilli) of rat duodenal mucosa compared with that of the other gastrointestinal mucosa.
