We developed the knitted shape-memory alloy (SMA) as a flexible actuator and applied it to a soft wearable exoglove for rehabilitation assistance. Based on user needs and anthropometric data, we custom-designed the exoglove for three hemiplegic patients using the knitted-SMA actuator and evaluated its bending performance, gripping force and wearability under the four simulation conditions (S1–S4). To address the specific needs, both SMA plain- and double-knit modules were applied to the exoglove based on the patients' finger joint range of motion (ROMs). The joint ROMs of all fingers increased by 13.71% and the skin temperature increased by 2.21 °C after actuating the glove (p = 0.006). The gripping force increased as much as 55.01%, when compared to the baseline. All patients were able to don and doff the developed glove independently, and positively evaluated their subjective satisfaction and thermal perception. We developed a machine learning algorithm (MLA) that can classify human thyroid cell clusters by exploiting both Papanicolaou staining and intrinsic refractive index (RI) as correlative imaging contrasts and evaluated the effects of this combination on diagnostic performance. Thyroid fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) specimens were analyzed using correlative optical diffraction tomography, which can simultaneously measure both, the color brightfield of Papanicolaou staining and three-dimensional RI distribution. The MLA was designed to classify benign and malignant cell clusters using color images, RI images, or both. We included 1535 thyroid cell clusters (benign: malignancy = 1128:407) from 124 patients. Accuracies of MLA classifiers using color images, RI images, and both were 98.0%, 98.0%, and 100%, respectively. As information for classification, the nucleus size was mainly used in the color image; however, detailed morphological information of the nucleus was also used in the RI image. We demonstrate that the present MLA and correlative FNAB imaging approach has the potential for diagnosing thyroid cancer, and complementary information from color and RI images can improve the performance of the MLA. The prognostic role of soluble PD-L1 (sPD-L1) and exosomal PD-L1 (exoPD-L1) in patients with gastric cancer (GC) receiving systemic chemotherapy remains unelucidated. Thus, we examined their prognostic significance in patients with advanced GC. Blood samples were obtained from 99 patients with advanced GC receiving first-line chemotherapy. Serum-derived exosomes were isolated by centrifugation and polymer precipitation. The correlation between serum-derived exoPD-L1, plasma sPD-L1, immune-related markers, and circulating immune cells was evaluated. Patients were divided into two groups according to pretreatment sPD-L1 and exoPD-L1 levels: low sPD-L1 and high sPD-L1 groups, low exoPD-L1 and high exoPD-L1 groups. Patients with low sPD-L1 level before treatment (< 9.32 pg/mL) showed significantly better overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) than those with high sPD-L1 level (≥ 9.32 pg/mL). The low exoPD-L1 group (< 10.21 pg/mL) showed a tendency of longer PFS than the high exoPD-L1 group (≥ 10.21 pg/mL). Pretreatment sPD-L1 was an independent prognostic factor for OS in multivariate analysis. exoPD-L1 was associated with systemic inflammation markers, immunomodulatory cytokines, and T cells, while sPD-L1 was associated with tumor markers. Pretreatment plasma-derived sPD-L1 level could be used as a prognostic marker for patients receiving cytotoxic chemotherapy. Electronic monitoring systems have been globally adopted to track criminals to ensure public safety efficiently. In this study, we aimed to assess the wearability of an electronic bracelet using multiple evaluation methods, including the evaluation of range of motion (ROM), air gap (AG), and clothing pressure (CP) at the wearer's wrist, as well as self-scoring of subjective comfort (SC). We recruited eight Korean male participants (N = 8) who were in their 30 s and did not have any musculoskeletal problems at data collection. We compared the test results collected on the first day with those obtained after wearing the electronic wrist bracelet for 5 consecutive days. We also examined the differences between the normal-weight and overweight groups. Overall, the data evinced a decrease in the wrist ROM, AG, and SC, but an increase in the CP after it was worn for 5 days. And, the results were more observable in the overweight group, as compared to the normal-weight group. Furthermore, this study proposed a novel and effective assessment tool that could be used to measure the wearability of devices or systems intended to be worn on the human body—not only the electronic wrist bracelet for criminal monitoring but also popular commercial electronic bracelets for sportswear or health-related monitoring system. As the global population ages, there is an increasing demand for physical assistive devices for the elderly. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a wearable gripping aid for elderly women to assist in their handgrip ability. We developed an actuator module for the hand-gripping aid using a 4D knitted shape memory alloy and attached to a flexible nylon glove. At baseline, we measured the bending angles of the knitted shape memory alloy and the subjects' fingers while gripping. The bending angles of the gripping aid demonstrated similar hand mobility to those of elderly women in real life. We also found that SMA modules attached to a glove could implement the bending angle when gripping a ball derived from the index and middle fingers of elderly women. The finding could help to develop hand products that could be worn on the hand of the elderly by realizing the bending motion of each finger. The outcomes of this study suggest the practical potential of this wearable device as an effective hand-gripping aid for the elderly, based on a novel 4D material and ergonomic design approach. We explored how viewing one's anthropometric virtual avatar would affect the viewer's self-body perception through the comparative evaluation of self-concepts—self-esteem and self-compassion, within the framework of allocentric lock theory. We recruited 18 female adults, aged 18–21, who identified themselves to have some level of body image concerns, and who had had no clinical treatment for their body image. Participants were randomly assigned either to the experimental or control group. The experimental group participated in both body positivity program and virtual avatar program, whereas the control group attended the body positivity program, only. The results affirmed that the body positivity program served as a psychological buffer prior to the virtual avatar stimulus. After the virtual avatar experience, the participants demonstrated self-acceptance by lowering their expectation on how they should look like. The findings from exit interviews enriched the quantitative results. This study verified the mechanism of the altered processing of the stored bodily memory by the egocentric sensory input of virtual avatars, and offered practical potential of the study outcomes to be applied in various emerging fields where novel applications of virtual 3D technology are sought, such as fashion e-commerce. Background: Surgeons are trained as "internists that also operate," bringing an important skillset to patient management during the current COVID-19 pandemic. A review was performed to illustrate the response of surgical staff during the pandemic with regard to patient care and residency training. Methods: The evaluation and assessment of the changes enacted at Stony Brook Medicine's Department of Surgery is illustrated through the unique perspective of surgical residents. No IRB approval or written consent was obtained nor it was necessary for the purposes of this paper. Results: Hospital policy was enacted to hinder transmission of COVID-19 and included limited gatherings of people, restricted travel, quarantined symptomatic staff, and careful surveillance for disease incidence. Surgical residency transformed as residents were diverted from traditional surgical services to staff new COVID-19 ICUs. Education transitioned to an online-based platform for lectures and reviews. New skills sets were acquired such as PICC line placement and complex ventilator management. Conclusions: The viral surge impacted surgical training while also providing unique lessons regarding preparedness and strategic planning for future pandemic and disaster management. Background: Eye-gaze metrics derived from areas of interest (AOIs) have been suggested to be effective for surgical skill assessment. However, prior research is mostly based on static images and simulated tasks that may not translate to complex and dynamic surgical scenes. Therefore, eye-gaze metrics must advance to account for changes in the location of important information during a surgical procedure.Methods: We developed a dynamic AOI generation technique based on eye gaze collected from an expert viewing surgery videos. This AOI updated as the gaze of the expert moved with changes in the surgical scene. This technique was evaluated through an experiment recruiting a total of 20 attendings and residents to view 10 videos associated with and another 10 without adverse events.Results: Dwell time percentage (i.e., gaze duration) inside the AOI differentiated video type (U = 13508.5, p < 0.001) between videos with the presence (Mdn = 16.75) versus absence (Mdn = 19.95) of adverse events. This metric also differentiated participant group (U = 14029.5, p < 0.001) between attendings (Mdn = 15.45) and residents (Mdn = 19.80). This indicates that our dynamic AOIs reflecting the expert eye gaze was able to differentiate expertise, and the presence of unexpected adverse events.Conclusion: This dynamic AOI generation technique produced dynamic AOIs for deriving eye-gaze metrics that were sensitive to expertise level and event characteristics. This study examined how the participant’s self-esteem and social physique anxiety affected the emotional reactions to viewing their own virtual body and willingness to participate in the virtual experience in the future. Three-dimensional body scanning technology was used as a virtual reality tool. Ninety-three (51 males and 42 females) subjects participated in the experiment, who were 18+ years old, both genders, and had no history of musculoskeletal or mental problems. The experiment consisted of the three phases, including the pre-scanning survey, 3D body scanning, and post-scanning evaluation. The results verified causal relationships that led to certain types of emotions after viewing the 3D virtual body and the willingness to participate in a future session, within the domains of self-esteem and social physique anxiety. Specifically, self-confidence (positive dimension of self-esteem) was strongly associated with positive emotions. The “other-oriented” perspective of social physique anxiety exhibited positive correlations with negative emotions. The participants who showed positive emotions indicated a strong willingness to participate in another session of 3D body scanning in the future, but those with negative emotions also showed their positive willingness to participate in the future session. It signified that regardless of their emotional responses (positive or negative) to viewing their 3D virtual body, the participants were willing to experience their 3D virtual body in the future. The findings suggested that this virtual reality approach could be used as a potentially effective, clinical tool for patients with body image-related disorders. Lotus ( Nelumbo nucifera) root has been used as an edible vegetable in East Asia for thousands of years. The present research was aimed to explore the physicochemical, nutritional and microbiological safety of lotus root fermented sugar syrup as a fermented food supplement or condiment for human health benefits. In this study, the physicochemical, nutritional and microbiological safety properties of lotus root syrup fermented with 57° Brix brown sugar at different time periods until 6 months (180 days) was investigated. There was a significant improvement as compared to 57° Brix brown sugar broth (as a control) in the total acceptability and physicochemical properties of lotus root sugar syrup samples such as pH and color improvement. The red color values of 180 days lotus root fermented sugar syrup samples were significantly enhanced (6.85 ± 0.58) when compared with the control (0.20 ± 0.15). In addition, the total protein content was increased from 8.27 ± 0.86 to 392.33 ± 7.19 μg/mL, along with the increase in fermentation time reaching to the level of consumption acceptability. All the lotus root fermented sugar syrup samples were subjected to microbiological analysis. It was found that the coliform, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella and Staphylococcus aureus counts were not detected in majority of the samples, confirming the high degree of hygiene processing of lotus root fermented sugar syrup samples for its use as a food supplement or condiment. Retrograde communication from axonal targets to neuronal cell bodies is critical for both the development and function of the nervous system. Much progress has been made in recent years linking long-distance, retrograde signaling to a signaling endosome, yet the mechanisms governing the trafficking and signaling of these endosomes remain mostly uncharacterized. Here we report that in mouse sympathetic neurons, the target-derived nerve growth factor (NGF)-tropomyosin-related kinase type 1 (TrkA, also called Ntrk1) signaling endosome, on arrival at the cell body, induces the expression and recruitment of a new effector protein known as Coronin-1 (also called Coro1a). In the absence of Coronin-1, the NGF-TrkA signaling endosome fuses to lysosomes sixfold to tenfold faster than when Coronin-1 is intact. We also define a new Coronin-1-dependent trafficking event in which signaling endosomes recycle and re-internalize on arrival at the cell body. Beyond influencing endosomal trafficking, Coronin-1 is also required for several NGF-TrkA-dependent signaling events, including calcium release, calcineurin activation and phosphorylation of cAMP responsive element binding protein (CREB). These results establish Coronin-1 as an essential component of a feedback loop that mediates NGF-TrkA endosome stability, recycling and signaling as a critical mechanism governing developmental competition for survival. The purpose of this study is to explore the effectiveness of 3D simulation technology for enhancing spatial visualization skills in apparel design education and further to suggest an innovative teaching approach using the technology. Apparel design majors in an introductory patternmaking course, at a large Midwestern University in the United States, participated in this study. Three different teaching methods (lecture, 3D simulation instruments, and paper patternmaking) were employed in consecutive instructional phases, within a single day. A short questionnaire devised to assess students' visualization abilities and overall evaluation on the three different teaching methods was administered to the students after each of the three phases. Overall, students' abilities to visualize 2D patterns onto a human body were improved by all three teaching methods. The 3D simulation instruments anchored positive effects of training on spatial visualization abilities between lecture and paper patternmaking practices. The results affirm that 3D simulation technology has positive potential as an efficient instructional tool for improving students' visualization skills in apparel design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
