The Department of Agricultural, Food, Environmental and Animal Sciences (DI4A) at the University of Udine, in collaboration with Friuli Venezia Giulia regional authorities, within northeastern Italy, set up a wildlife monitoring and surveillance regional network, named InfoFaunaFVG. Here we describe the development and application of this data repository system based on a novel progressive web application, and report the data gathered in the first two and a half years of its use. InfoFaunaFVG is made of a Web Database and an integrated WebGIS system. In particular, the following open source softwares are used: Apache HTTP Server, Oracle MySQL, Symfony, Apache Tomcat, GeoServer, OpenLayers. The web app can be accessed from any web browser or by installing the progressive web application in the desktop or mobile devices. In short, operating from November 2019, InfoFaunaFVG currently (April 2022) contains a total of 40,175 records, from 300 different users, from 16 institutions. Among all species recorded, mammals were 40% (16,018) of the total, whereas avian species represented 59% (23,741), and others (reptiles and amphibians) 1% (416), respectively. Two hundred twenty-six different species (175 avian and 51 mammals) were recorded. Details about causes of death and live animal rescue were reported. To date, InfoFaunaFVG has proven to be a successful wildlife data repository system providing high quality consistent, accurate and traceable data. These had a considerable impact on regional wildlife governance. In the authors’ knowledge, InfoFaunaFVG is the first example described in literature of such a progressive web application, coordinated on an institutional level, and not based on voluntary-citizen observations. Background: Important risk factors for the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the world, human papillomavirus (HPV), include early sexual activity, use of contraceptives, tobacco smoking, and immunological and genetic factors. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between GSTM1 and GSTT1 polymorphisms and HPV infection and associated risk factors in a group of women assisted in the public health system of southwestern Paraná, Brazil. Methods and results: A case–control study was designed with 21 women with HPV matched by age in the case group and 84 women without the virus in the control group. Viral detection was conducted via polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and GSTM1 and GSTT1 genotyping by Multiplex PCR. The results showed that the GSTT1 null allele was a protective factor against infection (ORadj 0.219; 95% CI 0.078–0.618; p = 0.004). No relationship was observed for the GSTM1 gene. Smoking was defined as a risk factor (ORadj 3.678; 95% CI 1.111–12.171; p = 0.033), increasing the chances of HPV by up to 3.6 times. Conclusion: This study showed, for the first time, the relationship between GSTM1 and GSTT1 genetic polymorphisms and HPV. This article discusses the feasibility and safety of real robotic 3-arm sleeve gastrectomy, a surgical procedure for treating obesity. The authors found that this approach does not increase surgical time, hospital stay, or complications. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is a well-established procedure and the most performed bariatric surgery worldwide. The authors also describe their standardized technique for performing the robotic sleeve gastrectomy and highlight the benefits of a port-reduced approach. Mesothelioma is a malignant tumor mainly correlated to occupational asbestos exposure. Rare reports describe its occurrence also in animals, mainly linked to asbestos in the environment. Asbestos exposure is demonstrated by the appearance of characteristic histological hallmarks: asbestos containing ferruginous bodies that are iron-based structures forming around fibers and also other dust particles. Here we present a clinical case of a suspect of mesothelioma in the peritoneum of a dog with parallel histological observation of ferruginous bodies. To possibly correlate the dog tumor to environmental exposure, we performed X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyses at two different synchrotrons to resolve the ferruginous bodies' composition. While the histological examination diagnoses a tubulo-papillary mesothelioma, the XRF analyses show that ferruginous bodies contain Si particles, resembling formations of exogenous origin; however, the morphology is unlikely that of asbestos fibers. We speculate that the peritoneal mesothelioma of this dog could be related to environmental exposure to non-asbestos material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recently, social anxiety disorder (SAD) and paranoia have been demonstrated to be closely related. However, data were primarily drawn from adult community samples or patients with schizophrenia. The present study used a cross-sectional design to evaluate a sample of adolescents with SAD (n = 30, mean age 15.3 ± 0.9 years) compared with an age- and sex-matched group of healthy controls (n = 26, mean age 15.9 ± 1.6 years). The SAD group displayed more frequent and intense paranoid thoughts than the control group (t = 4.16, p < 0.001). The level of paranoid thoughts was significantly predicted by the degree of social phobia, even after adjusting for sex and other anxiety disorders, although adjusting for depression slightly reduced the extent and significance of the prediction. A lack of awareness about the association between SAD and paranoia may lead to incorrect diagnoses (e.g. misdiagnosis of psychotic disorders), or it may negatively influence the (psycho)therapeutic process and patient outcomes. There is controversy regarding the superiority of carvedilol (C) over metoprolol (M) in congestive heart failure. We hypothesized that C is superior to M in chronic ischemic cardiomyopathy because of its better anti-inflammatory and pro-angiogenic effects. In order to test our hypothesis we used a chronic canine model of multivessel ischemic cardiomyopathy where myocardial microcatheters were placed from which interstitial fluid was collected over time to measure leukocyte count and cytokine levels. After development of left ventricular dysfunction, the animals were randomized into four groups: sham ( n = 7), placebo ( n = 8), M ( n = 11), and C ( n = 10), and followed for 3 months after treatment initiation. Tissue was examined for immunohistochemistry, oxidative stress, and capillary density. At 3 months both rest and stress wall thickening were better in C compared to the other groups. At the end of 3 months of treatment end-systolic wall stress also decreased the most in C. Similarly resting myocardial blood flow (MBF) improved the most in C as did the stress endocardial/epicardial MBF. Myocardial interstitial fluid showed greater attenuation of leukocytosis with C compared to M, which was associated with less fibrosis and oxidative stress. C also had higher IL-10 level and capillary density. In conclusion, in a chronic canine model of multivessel ischemic cardiomyopathy we found 3 months of C treatment resulted in better resting global and regional function as well as better regional function at stress compared to M. These changes were associated with higher myocardial levels of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 and less myocardial oxidative stress, leukocytosis, and fibrosis. Capillary density and MBF were almost normalized. Thus in the doses used in this study, C appears to be superior to M in a chronic canine model of ischemic cardiomyopathy from beneficial effects on inflammation and angiogenesis. Introduction: The ideal surgical treatment for pulmonary metastasectomy remains controversial. Minimally invasive surgery may offer advantages for quality of life outcomes, with equivalent oncologic long-term results. The purpose of our study was to confirm the validity of the thoracoscopic approach for pulmonary metastasectomy. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 164 patients who underwent 212 lung metastasectomies from January 2000 to December 2010. Complete curative pulmonary resections were performed in 159 (96.95 %) cases; 126 patients developed lung metastases from epithelial tumors: 28 from sarcoma, 7 from melanoma, and 3 from germ cell tumors. The mean disease-free interval (DFI) was 38.75 months. Fifty-four patients underwent a major VATS resection (53 thoracoscopic lobectomies and 1 pneumonectomy), and 110 patients underwent a wedge resection/segmentectomy. Lymph node sampling was performed in 117 cases. Results: After a mean follow-up of 38 months, 87 patients (53 %) had died. All resection margins were tumor-free at final pathological examination. Multivariate analysis not confirmed in our series a better prognosis for patients with a particular histologic type and also DFI, age, number of metastases, and type of surgery did not statistically influence long-term survival. Conclusions: Thoracoscopic surgery is an acceptable procedure, safe and efficacious, with a 5-year overall survival that is equivalent to open surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Rett syndrome is a severe neurodevelopmental disorder mainly affecting females and usually linked to mutations in the methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 gene, with an estimated prevalence of 1 in 10,000 live female births. Clinical features which usually become more apparent over time include breathing dysfunction, seizures, spasticity, peripheral vasomotor disturbance, scoliosis, growth retardation, and hypotrophic feet, with a great variety of presentations. The clear immaturity in brainstem mechanisms is expressed by the presence of early sleep disorders such as nocturnal awakenings, bruxism, and difficulty falling asleep, and no conclusive findings were derived from the few polysomnographic studies about the sleep macrostructural aspects. The aim of this study is to analyze the sleep macrostructural parameters, the nocturnal respiratory characteristic, and the presence of periodic limb movements in a sample of children affected by Rett syndrome. Materials: Thirteen Rett subjects underwent a polysomnographic study, and the findings were compared with those obtained by a group of 40 healthy children. Results: The Rett group shows a great impairment in sleep macrostructural and respiratory parameters, with a higher percentage of pathological periodic limb movements than the controls. Conclusions: This study may be considered a report about the ventilatory impairment during sleep in Rett syndrome and the first approach to the macrostructural aspects of sleep supported by the PSG data that could be considered mandatory for a better comprehension of this very complex syndrome. Migraine is common in children, but few specific drugs are available. We performed an open-label comparison of effects of two nutraceutical preparations (ginkgolide B vs. Griffonia simplicifolia extract) on outcomes in 374 school-age children (mean 10.7 years) with migraine without aura. Half of them received ginkgolide B; and half, Griffonia simplicifolia. Both preparations were given orally twice a day for 6 months. Patients kept a headache diary. Outcomes at the beginning and end of treatment were compared. Both preparations reduced all outcome measures after 6 months of treatment. However, reductions in headache frequency, duration and intensity, PedMIDAS score and behavioural reactions to headache were significantly greater in the ginkgolide B group. Both nutraceutical treatments appear promising in paediatric migraine without aura, particularly because of their lack of side effects. Migraine without aura (MoA) could be considered the most frequent form of primary headache in children, associated with many known comorbidities, but only the recent literature has begun to consider the importance of motor impairment linked to the attacks. The developmental coordination disorder (DCD) is a very common problem among children, with a prevalence ranging up to 19 %. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of motor coordination impairment in a population of children affected by MoA, and its role as putative risk factor for motor skills impairment. This observational study was performed in the Clinic of Child and Adolescent Neuropsychiatry of the Second University of Naples. MoA was diagnosed according to the International Classification of Headache Disorders (IHS-2) criteria. The study population consisted of 27 patients affected by MoA (16 females, 11 males) (mean age: 8.7 ± 2.15 years) and 59 typically developing children (34 females, 25 males) (mean age: 8.0 ± 2.1 years). The whole population underwent a clinical evaluation in order to assess the total IQ level, the visual motor integration skills, and the presence of DCD. Our results showed that MoA children had more impairments in motor coordination ( p < 0.001) and visual motor integration ( p < 0.001) than control group. To our knowledge, this is the first study to assess the association of poor motor coordination and MoA in children using objective measurements. These findings suggest a new perspective in the management of migraine disease in children, pinpointing that the relationship between DCD and migraine could represent a not yet understood or identified comorbidity, even if further reports are necessary, and that migraine probably could be considered not only a painful syndrome in future. Purpose: Aims of our study are evaluating: (1) the prevalence of dolicofacial pattern among enuretic and control-group children, (2) the prevalence of an abnormal head posture in bedwetters, and (3) the correlation with sleep-related breathing disorders (SRBD) identified by polysomnography (PSG) recording. Nocturnal enuresis is a multifactorial disease, but has been related also to obstructive sleep-disordered breathing in both adults and children. Anatomical factors recognized to predispose to SRBD include adenotonsillar hypertrophy, neuromuscular disorders, craniofacial abnormalities associated with macroglossia, retrognathia or maxillary hypoplasia, and obesity. Methods: Two hundred seventy enuretic children aged 7-12 years (mean 9.62 ± 2.31) were compared with a control-matched group of 274 children. To screen nocturnal sleep habits, all subjects' mothers filled out the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children. Among these scales, only SBD scale was taken into account. Sleep breathing disorders (SBD) scale is composed of three items: sleep breathing difficulties, sleep apnea, and snoring. Cephalic index was calculated for each patient in order to identify facial patterns. An overnight PSG was performed in 28 (15 males, 13 females), randomly chosen, enuretic children and in 38 healthy volunteer controls (18 males, 20 females) matched for age (8.73 ± 0.79 vs. 9.12 ± 1.23; p = 0.147) and sex distribution (chi-square = 0.062; p = 0.803). Results: Bedwetters show different sleep habits, higher prevalence of dolicofacial pattern, and abnormal head posture more than controls. The Leriche syndrome with contiguous total occlusions of the infrarenal aorta and the iliac arteries is a variant of Trans-Atlantic Inter-Society Consensus (TASC) type D aortoiliac disease, for which surgery is the recommended treatment of choice. We sought to prospectively assess the feasibility and safety of an endovascular therapeutic approach. Eleven consecutive patients with Leriche syndrome (eight men; 64 ± 12 years) constituted the study cohort. The treatment strategy consisted of recanalization by transbrachial access of the occluded segments and subsequent transfemoral angioplasty with selective stent placement in the distal aorta and primary nitinol stent placement in the iliac arteries. Bilateral endovascular success was achieved in eight patients (73%), unilateral success in the other three patients. Seven patients received aortic stents; the total stented segment length in 19 iliac arteries successfully recanalized amounted to a median of 18 cm (range 12–26 cm). There was one periprocedural complication, an acute thrombotic aortoiliac occlusion managed by thrombolysis. One patient with unilateral endovascular success had to undergo femorofemoral crossover bypass grafting. At a median of 14 months, significant hemodynamic improvement was observed in successfully revascularized legs (ankle-brachial index, 0.79 ± 0.20 vs. 0.48 ± 0.08 at baseline; P = 0.0004); walking capacity as well as Rutherford category of peripheral arterial disease had improved in all patients. In this small series of patients with Leriche syndrome, the reconstruction of the totally occluded aortoiliac bifurcation by endoluminal means was shown to be feasible and safe and associated with excellent mid-term clinical outcomes. Sexuality is correlated with diploidy and apomixis with polyploidy in the Brachiaria genus. Brachiaria ruziziensis is a key species in Brachiaria breeding due to its obligate sexuality and intrinsic agronomic qualities. Interspecific crosses in the genus became feasible only when a few diploid accessions of B. ruziziensis were artificially tetraploidized and remained sexual. Hybridization has been done since, using natural tetraploid apomictic accessions of B. brizantha or B. decumbens as pollen donors. Twenty two accessions of B. ruziziensis from the Embrapa Beef Cattle germplasm collection (Campo Grande, MS, Brazil) were cytologically analyzed: 16 are natural diploids (2 n = 2 x = 18) and six are artificially induced tetraploids (2 n = 4 x = 36). The meiotic behavior in the 16 diploid accessions varied. The mean of meiotic abnormalities per accession ranged from zero to 24.46%. Meiotic behavior in the induced tetraploid accessions also varied with the mean of meiotic abnormalities ranging from 5.20% to 54.71%. The most common abnormalities observed in both the diploid and the tetraploid accessions, were those related to irregular chromosome segregation. In one tetraploid accession, with a high frequency of those, other irregularities involving chromosome orientation at metaphase plate and chromosome convergence to the poles, a meiotic mutation known as divergent spindle, were recorded. Background A newly recognized lesion in pathologic myopia is peripapillary detachment of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and retina. Recently introduced en face optical coherence tomography (OCT) provides not only cross-sectional but also coronal scans of the retina, and allows lateral extent visualization and thickness measurement of lesions.MethodsThree patients presenting bilateral peripapillary yellow-orange lobulated area in high myopia have been evaluated with fluorescein angiography (FA), indocyanine green angiography (ICGA), en face OCT (OCT/SLO; Ophthalmic Technologies Inc, Toronto, Canada), and Humphrey visual field analyzer.ResultsIn all eyes, en face OCT has shown the presence of a peripapillary sub-RPE nonreflective area. The lateral extent of this area was clearly detectable and the measurement of its thickness was obtained. We detected a cleft in the RPE at one edge of the cavitation in two eyes, vascular tractions and vitreoretinal tractions in two eyes, a macular hole with posterior retinal detachment, and small areas of RPE detachment nonconnected with the peripapillary detachment in one eye. In the four eyes presenting a proper central fixation, glaucomatous visual field defects were evident.ConclusionEn face OCT has allowed to evaluate the thickness and the lateral extent of the peripapillary detachment. BackgroundIn vitreomacular traction syndrome, an incomplete vitreous detachment with persistent vitreous traction on the macula is present. This condition may determine formation of epiretinal membranes, macular puckering, macular oedema, and traction macular detachment. Recently introduced en face optical coherence tomography (OCT) provides not only longitudinal B-scan but also coronal C-scan images of the retina.MethodsFifteen eyes of 11 non-diabetic patients presenting vitreomacular traction syndrome have been evaluated with en face OCT (OTI, Toronto, Ontario, Canada).ResultsIn 12 eyes, cystoid macular oedema was detectable at fundus examination and was associated with a broad-based adherence of the posterior hyaloid to the macula. In three eyes, foveal detachment appeared to be associated with focal foveal vitreoretinal traction. In all eyes, the lateral extent of the hyaloidal tractions on the macula was clearly detectable at coronal C-scan. They appeared as sigmoid hyper-reflective bands in the hyporeflective vitreous chamber. Microsporogenesis of several Brachiaria species of the Brazilian collection at Embrapa Beef Cattle has been analyzed in detail. This paper reports abnormal cytokinesis in three accessions of three different species ( Brachiaria humidicola, 2 n = 4 x = 36, Brachiaria decumbens, 2 n = 4 x = 36, and Brachiaria dura, 2 n = 6 x = 54). Chromosomes paired in bi-, tri-, and quadrivalents in these accessions, whereas chromosome segregation at meiosis I was characterized by exclusion of laggards as micronuclei. In a high number of meiocytes, the first sign of cytokinesis appeared only in metaphase II and did not divide the meiocyte into a dyad. Total absence of cytokinesis was also detected among meiocytes in the second division. Since in both cases the two metaphase plates were very close, they favored the rejoining of chromosome sets after anaphase II and formed a restitutional nucleus in telophase II. Second cytokinesis occurred after telophase II in most meiocytes. Monads, dyads, and triads with n or 2 n nuclei were observed among meiotic products. The 2 n gametes observed correspond to the first division restitution (FDR). The number of affected cells in each accession was variable, but the number of microspores with restitutional nucleus, including those scored in tetrads and the released ones, did not exceed 9%. Although polyploidy is common in the genus Brachiaria, its origin is still unclear. Current results suggest that 2 n gametes may have contributed to the evolutionary history of the genus. Objectives. The application of sighs during baseline ventilation was found to improve alveolar recruitment and oxygenation in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The present investigation evaluates if respiratory mechanics can be modified by a sigh. Methods. Ten consecutive patients with acute lung injury (ALI) admitted to the University Hospital Intensive Care Unit the were studied during mechanical ventilation. Three sighs were administered to sedated-paralyzed patients during the measurement period. Respiratory mechanics were studied in regular breaths immediately before and after a sigh provided that a steady-state had been reached and by the airway pressure-time curve profile to evaluate the lung recruitment. Viscoelastic constants (elastic, resistive, and time), as well as elastance and resistances, were determined by the single breath method. Arterial blood gases were also determined pre- and post-sigh. Results: Elastic and resistive components of viscoelasticity decreased after a sigh (20 and 21%, respectively). As a result, the pressure required to overcome viscoelasticity and mechanical inhomogeneities also decreased in these patients (17%). The mechanical changes were associated with alterations in PaO2. Conclusions The sigh is useful to diminish viscoelastic impedance in ALI patients, thus allowing a smaller inflation pressure. Under the present experimental conditions it seems that viscoelastic mechanical alterations precede their elastic and resistive counterparts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article provides information on research which determined the chromosome numbers and meiotic behaviour of 21 accessions of Brachiaria jubata, a forage grass genus of African origin. Cytological evaluations of Brachiaria accessions showed that hybridization in Brachiaria requires sexual tetraploid females to achieve pollen fertility. In the single diploid accession identified, a low frequency of irregular chromosome segregation was observed.

The genus Brachiaria (Trin.) Griseb. has been characterized as having two basic chromosome numbers to this date: x = 7 and x = 9, with the predominance of the latter. Cytological studies performed on five accessions of Brachiaria dictyoneura (Fig. et De Not.). Stapf revealed a new chromosome number for the genus, x = 6. The origin of x = 6 is still unknown. All accessions examined for this species presented 2n = 24 and typical meiotic abnormalities of polyploids. The use of such accessions in the Brachiaria hybridization breeding program is discussed. The meiotic behavior of two half-sib interspecific tetraploid (2 n = 4 x = 36) promising hybrids, a sexual and an apomictic one, from crosses B. ruziziensis and B. brizantha, was evaluated. Although chromosome paired predominantly as bivalents, a few tri- and quadrivalents were recorded. Results suggest that B. brizantha and B. ruziziensis are closely related and genetic recombination is expected in hybrids. Introgression of specific target genes from B. ruziziensis into B. brizantha and vice-versa may be foreseen. However, abnormalities such as irregular chromosome segregation, chromosome stickiness and abnormal cytokinesis reported in these hybrids affect pollen fertility. More than 65% of pollen grains are sterile. Since the distinctive cytological feature of these hybrids is abnormal cytokinesis, this fact suggests that both parental genomes are unable to coordinate their activities with regard to this cytological phenomenon. Recently, DYX1C1, a candidate gene for developmental dyslexia, encoding a nuclear tetratricopepetide repeat domain protein dynamically regulated in brain, has been characterized through a translocation breakpoint in a Finnish family. Two putatively functional variants, −3 G/A and 1249G/T, have been reported to be significantly associated with dyslexia in this population. Further studies, conducted on different ethnic groups (English and Canadian), have not confirmed a role for DYX1C1 variants in increasing the risk for dyslexia. We investigated the role of these variants in dyslexic children and adolescents from Southern Italy. No significant evidence for association between dyslexia and these DYX1C1 putative functional variants has been shown. We argue that the different DYX1C allele frequencies shown among Italian and Finnish subjects with dyslexia could be attributable to the different linkage disequilibrium structure of these populations. The genus Brachiaria is characterized by a majority of polyploid accessions—mainly tetraploid—and apomictic reproduction. Sexuality is found among diploids. To overcome incompatibility barriers, accessions with the same ploidy level are necessarily used in hybridization. Thus, sexual diploid accessions were tetraploidized to be used as female genitors. This paper reports microsporogenesis in an artificially induced tetraploid accession of Brachiaria ruziziensis. Chromosome pairing at diakinesis ranged from univalents to tetravalents, with predominance of bivalents. Irregular chromosome segregation was frequent in both meiotic divisions. During the first division, multiple spindles showing different arrangements were recorded. The spindle position determined the plane of first cytokinesis and the number of chromosomes determined the size of the cell. Meiotic products were characterized by polyads with spores of different sizes. Pollen sterility was estimated at 61.38%. The limitations of using this accession in the breeding program are discussed. Male meiosis is generally synchronous in higher plants. The regulation of the cell cycle is still not well understood, and a powerful tool for gaining an understanding of this regulation is the development of mutations that affect cell-cycle synchrony. We report here asynchronous microsporogenesis in an interspecific hybrid between two important tropical grasses. In young spikelets of the interspecific hybrid 49.10% of anther meiocytes entered meiosis, exhibiting typical phases of the first and second divisions, while the other 50.90% showed distinctive features of early prophase. In older spikelets, anthers containing mature pollen grains also displayed meiocytes still undergoing meiosis. At this time, the latter cells were enclosed by the exine wall. Despite asynchrony, all cells completed meiosis. Old anthers contained only pollen grains that appeared to be in the same stage of development. Pollen fertility was estimated to be 52.76% in dehiscent anthers. An independent genetic control for meiosis synchrony and meiotic stages is suggested. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigated the molecular basis of hyperekplexia (STHE), an inherited neurological disorder characterised by neonatal hypertonia and an exaggerated startle response, in a kindred and identified a novel missense mutation in the pore-lining M2 domain of the α[sub 1] subunit of the glycine receptor (GLRA1). Sequencing analysis of all exons of the GLRA1 gene revealed a G1158A base transition in affected, heterozygous patients. The base transition results in a valine to methionine substitution at codon 260 in the middle of the M2 transmembrane domain. The location within the M2 domain suggests for this substitution a likely role in altering ion channel properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Benign familial neonatal convulsions (BFNC) is a rare autosomal inherited epilepsy. We studied the KCNQ2 coding region in a large, four-generation, Italian family with BFNC. A missense mutation C686T predicting the change of one of the innermost arginine (R214W) of the key functional voltage sensor (S4 helix), has been found in all affected members. This substitution probably reduces the movement of the voltage sensor that precedes channel opening during voltage-dependent activation. Several mutations affecting the trans-membrane domain and the pore region of the K[sup +] channels belonging to the KQT-like family have been described in some human diseases associated with altered regulation of cellular excitability (ie BFNC, some LQT syndromes and DFNA2). Paranoia is the erroneous idea that people are targeting you for harm, and the cognitive model suggests that symptoms increase with emotional and relational distress. A factor potentially associated with paranoia is mistrust, a milder form of suspiciousness. This study investigated the longitudinal course of non-clinical paranoia in a sample of 739 students (age range 10–12 at baseline assessment, 12–14 at second assessment) using data from the Social Mistrust Scale (SMS) and the paranoia subscale of the Specific Psychotic Experiences Questionnaire (SPEQ). Prevalence of mistrustful and high paranoia children was 14.6 and 15% respectively. Independently, baseline internalizing symptoms (b = 0.241, p < 0.001) and mistrust (b = 0.240, p < 0.001) longitudinally predict paranoia after controlling for confounders. The interaction of mistrust and internalizing symptoms at T1 increases the possibility of the onset of paranoia at T2. Therefore, the effect of mistrust on paranoia is more marked when internalizing symptoms are higher. Our results confirm the role of mistrust as a factor involved in the developmental trajectory of paranoia in adolescence, enhanced by the presence of internalizing symptoms. The implications of these results are both theoretical and clinical, as they add developmental information to the cognitive model of paranoia and suggests the assessment and clinical management of mistrust and internalizing symptoms in youth may be useful with the aim of reducing the risk of psychotic experiences. Several epidemiological studies have shown the presence of comorbidity between various types of sleep disorders and different headache subtypes. Migraine without aura is a sensitive risk factor for disorders of initiating and maintaining sleep (odds ratio (OR) 8.2500), and chronic tension–type headache for sleep breathing disorders (OR 15.231), but headache disorder is a cumulative risk factor for disorders of excessive somnolence (OR 15.061). Children frequently suffer from migraine or tension-type headaches, and the headache pain not only interferes with a patient’s life but can affect his entire family. Headache management includes not only pharmacological agents but also a complete assessment of the patient’s life-style and possible stressor factors, as well as an accurate assessment of his or her present episodic therapy. Stress may play a role in precipitating headache attacks, and it is crucial to keep in mind that school and interpersonal relationships are the most significant stressor factors in the adolescent life. Several factors must be considered to achieve successful treatment. The medication must be given as early as possible and the dose administered must be sufficient. Paracetamol can still be considered as the treatment of first choice. Ibuprofen and acetylsalicylic acid should be used in patients refractory to paracetamol. There are no controlled studies on the pharmacological prophylaxis of tension-type headache in children and adolescents. However, amitriptyline may be used considering its efficacy in adults and some experience with this compound in other conditions in childhood and adolescence. The article aims to assess at-home portable monitoring (PM) in the elderly for a diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Discussed in the article is the method employed in the study of patients more than 64 years of age including the utilization of polysomnography (PSG), portable monitoring using Stardust II which is a type 3 portable device, and the scoring procedure for both PM and PSG and its statistical analysis.

Introduction and objective: Pregnancy- and birth- related risk factors of ADHD include maternal smoking, alcohol ingestion and prematurity. We compared the correlation between these risk factors with a sample of Campanian children with ADHD. Methods: 194 ADHD subjects (DSM criteria), from 4 to 22 years old, 52.1% with ADHD combined type (ADHD-C). Data were collected using medical folders of the patients; we estimated the prevalence of maternal smoking, prenatal exposure to alcohol and low birth weight. Pearson analysis was made to estimate the association between these factors and ADHD. Results: There is a statistically significant correlation between smoking and use of alcohol during pregnancy and ADHD-C, and, in our sample, between LBW and these factors (r = 0.330; r = 0.301). Discussion: There is a correlation between the onset of ADHD and pregnancy risk factors in our population; found data are similar in frequency to the data of literature. Conclusions: Maternal smoking during pregnancy, prematurity, alcohol exposure, contribute as causes of ADHD. This paper reports the occurrence of chromosome elimination during microsporogenesis in an interspecific hybrid between a sexual diploid accession (SEX) of Brachiaria ruziziensis (2 n=2 x=18) and an apomictic tetraploid accession (APO) of B. brizantha (2 n=4 x=36). Meiosis was very abnormal in the triploid hybrid (2 n=3 x=27); we observed a distinct asynchrony from metaphase I to the end of meiosis. The APO and the SEX genomes did not show the same meiotic rhythm. When the former, with nine bivalents, was in metaphase I, the nine SEX univalents were not yet aligned; when the latter reached the plate, the APO genome was already in anaphase. In subsequent stages, the APO genome had reached the poles while the SEX was undergoing sister-chromatid segregation. As the SEX genome always remained temporally behind, it gave rise to one extra-nucleus in each pole. In the second division, the behavior was the same but anaphase II did not occur for the SEX genome, and only one extra-nucleus was observed in each cell in telophase II. Chromosome elimination for the SEX genome ranged from partial to total. The importance of these findings with respect to Brachiaria breeding programmes is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
