Background: The negative effect of mental fatigue (MF) on physical performance has recently been questioned. One reason behind this could lie in the interindividual differences in MF-susceptibility and the individual features influencing them. However, the range of individual differences in mental fatigue-susceptibility is not known, and there is no clear consensus on which individual features could be responsible for these differences. Objective: To give an overview of interindividual differences in the effects of MF on whole-body endurance performance, and individual features influencing this effect. Methods: The review was registered on the PROSPERO database (CRD42022293242). PubMed, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus and PsycINFO were searched until the 16th of June 2022 for studies detailing the effect of MF on dynamic maximal whole-body endurance performance. Studies needed to include healthy participants, describe at least one individual feature in participant characteristics, and apply at least one manipulation check. The Cochrane crossover risk of bias tool was used to assess risk of bias. The meta-analysis and regression were conducted in R. Results: Twenty-eight studies were included, with 23 added to the meta-analysis. Overall risk of bias of the included studies was high, with only three presenting an unclear or low rating. The meta-analysis shows the effect of MF on endurance performance was on average slightly negative (g = − 0.32, [95% CI − 0.46; − 0.18], p < 0.001). The multiple meta-regression showed no significant influences of the included features (i.e. age, sex, body mass index and physical fitness level) on MF-susceptibility. Conclusions: The present review confirmed the negative impact of MF on endurance performance. However, no individual features influencing MF-susceptibility were identified. This can partially be explained by the multiple methodological limitations such as underreporting of participant characteristics, lack of standardization across studies, and the restricted inclusion of potentially relevant variables. Future research should include a rigorous description of multiple different individual features (e.g., performance level, diet, etc.) to further elucidate MF mechanisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: To examine the isolated and combined effects of severe hypoxia and a mild thermal challenge on performance, physiological measures, cognition, and serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).Methods: Nine trained male athletes (age: 23 ± 3 years; W max: 333 ± 45 W) completed four experimental trials (CON: 15 °C/0 m, ALT: 15 °C/3800 m, TEMP: 25 °C/0 m, ALT + TEMP: 25 °C/3800 m) in a double blind, randomized, cross-over design. Subjects cycled for 30 min in a self-paced test starting at 75% W max, their goal was to 'perform as much work as possible in 30 min.' Power output, heart rate, blood lactate, pulse oximetry, core and skin temperature, thermal sensation, ratings of perceived exertion, reaction time (RT), and BDNF were assessed.Results: The amount of work produced in 30 min was reduced by temperature (F(1,8) = 7.1; p = 0.029; 360 ± 19 kJ in 15 °C; 344 ± 18 kJ in 25 °C) and altitude (F(1,8) = 94.2; p < 0.001; 427 ± 24 kJ at sea level; 277 ± 15 kJ at altitude), yet there was no interaction effect. Altitude increased mean RT (F(1,8) = 8.0; p = 0.022; 281.9 ± 9.4 ms at sea level; 289.3 ± 10.0 ms at altitude) and RT variability (F(1,8) = 8.5; p = 0.020; 44 ± 3 ms at sea level: 50 ± 4 ms at altitude). Exercise increased BDNF (F(1,8) = 15.2; p = 0.005; PRE: 21.8 ± 1.3 ng/mL; POST: 26.5 ± 2.1 ng/mL).Conclusion: Exercise capacity was significantly reduced due to an increase in altitude (3800 m; -34.3%) or a 10 °C increase in ambient temperature (-3.2%). The combination of both stressors showed to be additive (-38.0 %). Altitude induced an increase in RT and RT variability presenting a deterioration in cognitive functioning during acute hypoxia. The present study aims at studying interactions between cognitive performance and conditioned pain modulation in patients with chronic whiplash-associated disorders (WAD) and healthy controls. In addition, the relation between cortisol concentrations and cognitive performance will be studied in patients with chronic WAD. Thirty-one subjects, 16 healthy subjects and 15 patients with chronic WAD, were enrolled and subjected to several self-report and physiological measures. Self-report measures encompassed pain rating during a procedure evaluating conditioned pain modulation. Afterward, they were subjected to physiological measures, which are cognitive tests (Stroop task, psychomotor vigilance task, and operation span task) preceded and followed by salivary cortisol concentration measurements. Chronic WAD patients performed worse in recall at the operation span task and presented longer reaction times at the psychomotor vigilance task and at the Stroop task when sleep-related words were shown ( p < .05). Conditioned pain modulation and cortisol concentrations were not significantly different between patients and controls ( p > .05). Only in the healthy subjects, conditioned pain modulation and baseline cortisol concentrations were correlated to cognitive performance ( p < .05). This is the first study addressing the relation between pain inhibition and cognitive performance in chronic WAD. We did not reveal impaired pain inhibition but did reveal cognitive dysfunctions in patients with chronic WAD. In various chronic pain populations, decreased cognitive performance is known to be related to pain severity. Yet, this relationship has not been investigated in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). This study investigated the relationship between cognitive performance and (1) pain severity, (2) level of fatigue, and (3) self-reported symptoms and health status in women with CFS. Examining the latter relationships is important for clinical practice, since people with CFS are often suspected to exaggerate their symptoms. A sample of 29 female CFS patients and 17 healthy controls aged 18 to 45 years filled out three questionnaires (Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey, Checklist Individual Strength (CIS), and CFS Symptom List) and performed three performance-based cognitive tests (psychomotor vigilance task, Stroop task, and operation span task), respectively. In both groups, pain severity was not associated with cognitive performance. In CFS patients, the level of fatigue measured with the CFS Symptom List, but not with the CIS, was significantly correlated with sustained attention. Self-reported mental health was negatively correlated with all investigated cognitive domains in the CFS group. These results provide evidence for the clinical importance of objectively measured cognitive problems in female CFS patients. Furthermore, a state-like measure (CFS Symptom List) appears to be superior over a trait-like measure (CIS) in representing cognitive fatigue in people with CFS. The present field experiment examined how multi-trial visuo-spatial learning and memory performance are impacted by excessive arousal, instigated by a potentially life-threatening event (i.e., a first parachute jump). Throughout a parachute training activity, subjective and neuroendocrine (i.e., cortisol) stress levels were assessed of 61 male military cadets who were randomly assigned to a control ( n = 30) or a jump stress condition ( n = 31). Post-stress learning and memory capacity was assessed with a 10-trial path-learning task that permitted emergence of learning curves. Pre-activity cortisol concentrations indicated a significant neuroendocrine anticipatory stress response in the stress group. Following parachuting, subjective stress levels and salivary cortisol reactivity differed significantly between groups. Visuo-spatial path-learning performance was impaired significantly after jump stress exposure, relative to the control group. Moreover, examination of the learning curves showed similar learning and memory performance at onset of the trials, with curves bifurcating as the task became more complex. These findings are in accordance with leading theories that acknowledge a moderating effect of task complexity. In sum, the present study extends knowledge concerning anticipatory stress effects, endogenously instigated cortisol reactivity, and the influence of extreme arousal on visuo-spatial path learning.
