Abstract In Andalusia, Community Social Service Centres (CSSCs) are funded by regulations following demographic, geographic, economic, and social disadvantage criteria. This study aims to analyse the geographical distribution of funding per inhabitant of CSSC by catchment area in Andalusia in 2019, and to study the statistical associations between funding and a range of demographic and socioeconomic indicators. The study spatial units (n = 184) included the catchment areas of CSSCs and, in the case of intramunicipal areas in large municipalities, they were grouped at the municipal level. Spatial autocorrelation measures were used to identify spatial clusters of high/low funding rates per inhabitant. Later, nonspatial and spatial regressions were applied to search for associations with different indicators (sex ratio, ageing index, dependency index, emigration rate, immigration rate, unemployment rate, population density, and employment rate in the primary sector). Abstract Despite strong preclinical data, the therapeutic benefit of the RANKL inhibitor, denosumab, in breast cancer patients, beyond the bone, is unclear. Aiming to select patients who may benefit from denosumab, we hereby analyzed RANK and RANKL protein expression in more than 2,000 breast tumors (777 estrogen receptor‐negative, ER−) from four independent cohorts. RANK protein expression was more frequent in ER− tumors, where it associated with poor outcome and poor response to chemotherapy. In ER− breast cancer patient‐derived orthoxenografts (PDXs), RANKL inhibition reduced tumor cell proliferation and stemness, regulated tumor immunity and metabolism, and improved response to chemotherapy. Intriguingly, tumor RANK protein expression associated with poor prognosis in postmenopausal breast cancer patients, activation of NFKB signaling, and modulation of immune and metabolic pathways, suggesting that RANK signaling increases after menopause. Our results demonstrate that RANK protein expression is an independent biomarker of poor prognosis in postmenopausal and ER− breast cancer patients and support the therapeutic benefit of RANK pathway inhibitors, such as denosumab, in breast cancer patients with RANK+ ER− tumors after menopause.

Abstract Action-oriented, transformative, and transdisciplinary approaches are increasingly heralded as promising tools that enable researchers not only to produce new knowledge about a situation, but also to actively engage in tackling it; however, such approaches raise critical questions about the methodological implications and conflicts involved in pursuing multiple objectives concurrently. This article seeks to advance this debate by examining the methodological implications of pursuing both knowledge production-oriented (epistemic) and action-oriented (transformative) objectives in urgent and uncertain situations. It asks how far a transformative mixed methods research design can leverage the potential of research to achieve multiple objectives in times of crisis. This methodological inquiry is based on a transformative mixed methods study on housing conditions and well-being which was initiated during the first COVID-19 lockdown in Switzerland. The study was composed of a country-wide survey, mobile crowdsourcing, interviews and Citizen Think Tanks. The results of this methodological reflection illustrate how this research design made it possible to (i) explore the effects of the crisis on domestic living spaces, (ii) engage with the crisis in a joint research space, and (iii) stimulate empowerment through reflection and mutual learning. These insights suggest the multidimensional orientation of the transformative mixed methods approach is appropriate for acting upon urgent crises. However, it challenges core methodological values and research constellations including (i) tackling unequal engagement opportunities, (ii) navigating social and epistemic control, and (iii) paying attention to situatedness and positionality. The article concludes that, in anticipation of future crises, favorable conditions for multi-targeted, collaborative research need to be fostered, both on the institutional and on personal levels. These conditions should enable fast and adequate team formation, as well as reflection and negotiation of positionalities, and divergent interests and objectives, of both scientists and citizens.

The estimation of confidence intervals for the rapidly (RDS) and slowly (SDS) digestible fractions is an important issue for assessing the nutritional characteristics of starch. Usually, the confidence interval estimation relies on a reduced number of experimental data, which may lead to unacceptable uncertainties, and hence to misleading conclusions. This work proposed a bootstrap approach for the estimation of confidence intervals for digestible starch fractions. Based on experimental digestograms, the approach obtains many (hundreds or thousands) bootstrapped digestograms by carrying out sampling with replacement of the experimental data. A simple first-order exponential model is then used for the least-squares fit of the bootstrap digestograms, obtaining a reliable estimation of the statistical uncertainty of the model parameters. The fitted model is used to estimate the RDS and SDS fraction by reading out the fitted curves at 20 and 120 min. The distribution of these starch fractions is used to estimate the 95% confidence intervals and to carry out ANOVA (p < 0.05) for the classification of starch groups (i.e., significant differences). The approach implementation is simple, relying on basic statistic concepts handled by most practitioners. The method was illustrated with an example of the dry heat treatment of corn starch. Grading the quality of care in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and determining its relationship with care satisfaction may recognize gaps that could lead to better clinical practice. Eighteen quality indicators (QIs) were recently developed and validated for patients with SLE based on the 2019 EULAR management recommendations. Few studies have analyzed the relationship between quality of care and care satisfaction in patients with lupus. This was a cross-sectional study. We included patients at least 18 years old who met the EULAR/ACR 2019 classification criteria for SLE. We interviewed patients and retrieved data from medical records to assess their compliance with a set of 18 EULAR-based QIs. We calculated each QI fulfillment as the proportion of fulfilled QI divided by the number of eligible patients for each indicator. Care satisfaction was evaluated with the satisfaction domain of LupusPRO version 1.7. Spearman correlation coefficient was used to determine the relationship between quality of care and care satisfaction. Seventy patients with a median age of 33 (IQR 23–48) were included, 90% were women. Overall adherence was 62.29%. The median care satisfaction was 100. Global adherence to the 18-QIs and the care satisfaction score revealed no correlation (r = 0.064, p = 0.599). Higher QI fulfillment was found in the group with remission versus the moderate-high activity group (p = 0.008). In our study, SLE patients in remission had higher fulfillment of quality indicators. Purpose of Review: Heart failure (HF) is one of the most frequent causes of hospital admission in elderly patients, especially in women, who present a high prevalence of geriatric syndromes like frailty. Studies have suggested that frailty and its impact may also differ between males and females. Understanding how frailty may differently affect HF patients depending on sex is therefore imperative for providing personalized care. The aim of this review is to summarize the role of sex in the prognostic impact of frailty in HF patients. Recent Findings: Numerous studies have identified frailty as a significant predictor of all-cause mortality and hospital readmissions. A recent study of elderly HF out-patients demonstrated that while women had a higher prevalence of frailty, it was an independent predictor of mortality and readmission only in men. Moreover, another study revealed that physical frailty was associated with time to first clinical event among men but not among women. These results raise the question about why frailty affects differently HF prognosis in men and women. Summary: Women with HF present a higher prevalence of frailty, especially when it is considered as physical decline. Nevertheless, frailty affects differently HF prognosis in men and women. Women with HF present lower mortality than men and frailty is related with prognosis only in men. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurological disorder that affects dopaminergic neurons. The lack of understanding of the underlying molecular mechanisms of PD pathology makes treating it a challenge. Several pieces of evidence support the protective role of enriched environment (EE) and exercise on dopaminergic neurons. The specific aspect(s) of neuroprotection after exposure to EE have not been identified. Therefore, we have investigated the protective role of EE on dopamine dysregulation and subsequent downregulation of DJ1 protein using in vitro and in vivo models of PD. Our study for the first time demonstrated that DJ1 expression has a direct correlation with dopamine downregulation in PD models and exposure to EE has a significant impact on improving the behavioral changes in PD mice. Purpose: To assess liver and spleen characteristics of a population with Gaucher disease (GD) using multiparametric MRI and MR elastography (MRE) for evaluation of diffuse liver and spleen disease, which includes liver fat fraction, liver and spleen volume and iron deposition, and liver and spleen stiffness correlated with DS3 Severity Scoring System for Gaucher disease (GD-DS3). Methods: We prospectively evaluated 41 patients with type 1 Gaucher disease using a 3.0 T MRI and MRE between January 2019 and February 2020. Clinical, laboratory, and imaging data was collected. Mann–Whitney, Kruskal–Wallis, and Spearman's correlation were applied to evaluate liver and spleen MRI and MRE, clinical and laboratory variables, and GD-DS3. ERT and SRT treatment groups were compared. Results: Hepatomegaly was seen in 15% and splenomegaly in 42% of the population. Moderate and strong and correlations were found between liver and spleen iron overload (rho = 0.537; p = 0.002); between liver and spleen volume (rho = 0.692, p < 0.001) and between liver and spleen stiffness (rho = 0.453, p = 0.006). Moderate correlations were found between liver stiffness and GD-DS3 (rho = 0.559; p < 0.001) and between splenic volume and GD-DS3 (rho = 0.524; p = 0.001). Conclusion: The prevalence of hepatosplenomegaly, liver fibrosis, and liver iron overload in treated patients with GD is low, which may be related to the beneficial effect of treatment. The use of mobile devices for web browsing has increased extraordinarily in recent years, becoming the main source of information. Unfortunately, developers cannot meet the needs of all users. As a result, users have been forced to adapt web content to their needs. Additionally, users face more costly interactions than on desktop computers due to the smaller screen size of cell phones. These interactions include URL typing, scrolling, taping, branching and tab-switching. If the number of web resources is large, the activity becomes unpleasant. Furthermore, should the quantity of interactions be extensive, the web experience also becomes unpleasant. Moreover, all these interactions lead to higher costs in terms of phone time and battery life, as well as more costly navigation. Web augmentation enhances the user web experience by adding content from different resources, modifying the original layout, or reducing interactions during web searches, among other benefits. To reduce user interactions and satisfy their information necessities, we propose MAWA, an extension for Firefox mobile that allows users to adapt any web page to their needs through web augmentation techniques. To validate our proposal, an evaluation of the tool has been carried out. The article presents the benefits introduced by MAWA as a response to the inconveniences experienced by users when performing their activities in the mobile browser. The results obtained show that MAWA is able to reduce the number of interactions significantly, as well as to reduce battery consumption and the time needed to obtain the desired information. Purpose: Sagittal synostosis is the most common isolated craniosynostosis. Surgical treatment of this synostosis has been extensively described in the global literature, with promising outcomes when it is performed in the first 12 months of life. However, in some cases, patients older than 12 months arrive at the craniofacial center with this synostosis. A comprehensive study on efficacy and perioperative outcomes has yet to be fully explored in this population. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the available evidence of surgical outcomes for the treatment of sagittal synostosis among older patients to analyze the efficacy and safety of synostosis surgery in this unique population. Methods: PubMed, Embase, and Scopus were searched for studies published from inception to March 2024 reporting surgical outcomes of synostosis surgery in older patients (> 12 months) with isolated sagittal synostosis. The main outcome was the reoperation rate, with secondary endpoints including transfusion rates, aesthetic outcomes, and surgical complications. Results: Nine studies were included in the final analysis. The pooled proportion of the reoperation rate was 1%. The rate of excellent aesthetic results was 95%. The need for transfusion associated with the procedures was 86%, and finally, surgical complications attained a pooled ratio of 2%, indicating minimal morbidity associated with the surgical repair. Conclusion: Sagittal synostosis surgery is a safe and effective procedure to perform in older patients; this meta-analysis suggests that open surgery confers a significant rate of excellent aesthetic results with a low reoperation rate and minimal complications associated with the intervention. Future research with direct comparisons among different techniques will validate the findings of this study, which will all contribute to the rigor of synostosis management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Quality of surgical care is understudied for lobular inflammatory breast cancer (IBC), which is less common, more chemotherapy-resistant, and more mammographically occult than ductal IBC. We compared guideline-concordant surgery (modified radical mastectomy [MRM] without immediate reconstruction following chemotherapy) for lobular versus ductal IBC. Methods: Female individuals with cT4dM0 lobular and ductal IBC were identified in the National Cancer Database (NCDB) from 2010–2019. Modified radical mastectomy receipt was identified via codes for "modified radical mastectomy" or "mastectomy" and "≥10 lymph nodes removed" (proxy for axillary lymph node dissection). Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and t-tests were used. Results: A total of 1456 lobular and 10,445 ductal IBC patients were identified; 599 (41.1%) with lobular and 4859 (46.5%) with ductal IBC underwent MRMs (p = 0.001). Patients with lobular IBC included a higher proportion of individuals with cN0 disease (20.5% lobular vs. 13.7% ductal) and no lymph nodes examined at surgery (31.2% vs. 24.5%) but were less likely to be node-negative at surgery (12.7% vs. 17.1%, all p < 0.001). Among those who had lymph nodes removed at surgery, patients with lobular IBC also had fewer lymph nodes excised versus patients with ductal IBC (median [interquartile range], 7 (0–15) vs. 9 (0–17), p = 0.001). Conclusions: Lobular IBC patients were more likely to present with node-negative disease and less likely to be node-negative at surgery, despite having fewer, and more frequently no, lymph nodes examined versus ductal IBC patients. Background: In 2008, bevacizumab received accelerated Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for use in human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative metastatic breast cancer (MBC). Based on the pre-clinical and preliminary clinical activity of the trastuzumab and bevacizumab combination, ECOG-ACRIN E1105 trial was developed to determine if the addition of bevacizumab to a chemotherapy and trastuzumab combination for first-line therapy would improve progression-free survival (PFS) in patients with HER2-positive MBC. Findings: 96 patients were randomized to receive standard first-line chemotherapy and trastuzumab with or without bevacizumab between November 2007 and October 2009, and 93 began protocol therapy. Induction therapy was given for 24 weeks, followed by maintenance trastuzumab with or without bevacizumab. 60% (56/93) began carboplatin and 74% (69/93) completed 6 cycles of induction therapy. Primary endpoint was PFS. Median PFS was 11.1 and 13.8 months for placebo and bevacizumab arms, respectively (hazard ratio [HR] 95%, Confidence Interval [Cl] for bevacizumab vs. placebo: 0.73 [0.43–1.23], p = 0.24), and at a median follow-up of 70.7 months, median survival was 49.1 and 63 months (HR [95% Cl] for OS: 1.09 [0.61–1.97], p = 0.75). The most common toxicities across both arms were neutropenia and hypertension, with left ventricular systolic dysfunction, fatigue, and sensory neuropathy reported more frequently with bevacizumab. Conclusions: In this trial, the addition of bevacizumab did not improve outcomes in patients with metastatic HER2-positive breast cancer. Although the trial was underpowered due to smaller than anticipated sample size, these findings corroborated other clinical trials during this time. Noradrenaline (NA) and serotonin (5-HT) induce nociception and antinociception. This antagonistic effect can be explained by the dose and type of activated receptors. We investigated the existence of synergism between the noradrenergic and serotonergic systems during peripheral antinociception. The paw pressure test was performed in mice that had increased sensitivity by intraplantar injection of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). Noradrenaline (80 ng) administered intraplantarly induced an antinociceptive effect, that was reversed by the administration of selective antagonists of serotoninergic receptors 5-HT1B isamoltan, 5-HT1D BRL15572, 5-HT2A ketanserin, 5-HT3 ondansetron, but not by selective receptor antagonist 5-HT7 SB-269970. The administration of escitalopram, a serotonin reuptake inhibitor, potentiated the antinociceptive effect at a submaximal dose of NA. Bone forming agents, also known as anabolic therapies, are essential in managing osteoporosis, particularly for patients at very high-risk of fractures. Identifying candidates who will benefit the most from these treatments is crucial. For example, this group might include individuals with severe osteoporosis, multiple vertebral fractures, a recent fragility fracture or those unresponsive to antiresorptive treatments. Definitions of patients with a very high fracture risk vary across nations, are often based on fracture history, bone mineral density (BMD), and/or fracture risk calculated by FRAX® or other algorithms. However, for very high-risk patients, anabolic agents such as teriparatide, abaloparatide, or romosozumab are commonly recommended as first-line therapies due to their ability to stimulate new bone formation and improve bone microarchitecture, offering significant benefits in rapid fracture reduction over antiresorptive therapies. The cost-effectiveness of these agents is a critical consideration for decision-makers. Despite their higher costs, their effectiveness in significantly reducing fracture risk and improving quality of life can justify the investment, especially when long-term savings from reduced fracture rates and associated healthcare costs are considered. Additionally, after completing a course of anabolic therapy, transitioning to antiresorptive agents like bisphosphonates or denosumab is crucial to maintain the gains in bone density and minimize subsequent fracture risks. This sequential treatment approach ensures sustained protection and optimal resource utilization. Hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated (HCN) channels1 are essential for pacemaking activity and neural signalling2,3. Drugs inhibiting HCN1 are promising candidates for management of neuropathic pain4 and epileptic seizures5. The general anaesthetic propofol (2,6-di-iso-propylphenol) is a known HCN1 allosteric inhibitor6 with unknown structural basis. Here, using single-particle cryo-electron microscopy and electrophysiology, we show that propofol inhibits HCN1 by binding to a mechanistic hotspot in a groove between the S5 and S6 transmembrane helices. We found that propofol restored voltage-dependent closing in two HCN1 epilepsy-associated polymorphisms that act by destabilizing the channel closed state: M305L, located in the propofol-binding site in S5, and D401H in S6 (refs. 7,8). To understand the mechanism of propofol inhibition and restoration of voltage-gating, we tracked voltage-sensor movement in spHCN channels and found that propofol inhibition is independent of voltage-sensor conformational changes. Mutations at the homologous methionine in spHCN and an adjacent conserved phenylalanine in S6 similarly destabilize closing without disrupting voltage-sensor movements, indicating that voltage-dependent closure requires this interface intact. We propose a model for voltage-dependent gating in which propofol stabilizes coupling between the voltage sensor and pore at this conserved methionine–phenylalanine interface in HCN channels. Avian influenza poses a severe threat to poultry production and global food security, prompting the development of vaccination programs in numerous countries. Modified live virus (MLV) vaccines, with their potential for mass application, offer a distinct advantage over existing options. However, concerns surrounding reversion, recombination, and unintended transmission have hindered the progress of MLV development for avian influenza in poultry. To address these concerns, we engineered reassortment-impaired, non-transmissible, safe, immunogenic, and protective MLVs through the rearrangement of internal gene segments and additional modifications to the surface gene segments HA and NA. The unique peptide marker aspartic acid-arginine-proline-alanine-valine-isoleucine-alanine-asparragine (DRPAVIAN) was incorporated into HA, while NA was modified to encode the chicken interleukin-18 (ckIL18) gene (MLV-H9N2-IL). In vitro, the MLV-H9N2 and MLV-H9N2-IL candidates demonstrated stability and virus titers comparable to the wild-type H9N2 strain. In chickens, the MLV-H9N2 and MLV-H9N2-IL candidates did not transmit via direct contact. Co-infection studies with wild-type virus confirmed that the altered HA and NA segments exhibited fitness disadvantages and did not reassort. Vaccinated chickens showed no clinical signs upon vaccination, all seroconverted, and the inclusion of ckIL18 in the MLV-H9N2-IL vaccine enhanced neutralizing antibody production. A significant decrease in viral loads post-challenge underscored the protective effect of the MLVs. The MLV-H9N2-IL vaccine, administered via drinking water, proved immunogenic in chickens in a dose-dependent manner, generating protective levels of neutralizing antibodies upon aggressive homologous virus challenge. Context: Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) is a biodegradable plastic. It was introduced to the plastics market in 1998 and since then has been widely used around the world. The main idea of this research is to perform quantum chemical calculations to study the potential toxicity of PBAT and its degradation products. We analyzed the electron transfer capacity to determine its potential toxicity. We found that biodegradable products formed with benzene rings are as good electron acceptors as PBAT and OOH•. Our results indicate that the biodegradation products are potentially as toxic as PBAT. This might explain why biodegradation products alter the photosynthetic system of plants and inhibit their growth. From this and other previous investigations, we can think that biodegradable plastics could represent a potential environmental risk. This work presents a thorough reevaluation of soil amplification in the La Chana neighborhood of Granada through a pioneering application of the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio technique on seismic noise data using various spectral approaches. The research recycles old seismic noise data recorded at 34 stations with 2 Hz instruments in the year 2010, supplemented with additional measurements recorded with broadband seismometers at nearby locations in the years 2013 and 2017. Initial traditional processing identifies a narrowband dominant frequency around 1.5 Hz, attributed to artificial or anthropogenic sources. To address this, the Maximum Entropy Algorithm was implemented to smooth the spectral response below 1 Hz, and filter out frequency peaks with very narrow spectral bands, while preserving the narrowband frequency around 1.5 Hz in some records. The Thomson Multitaper method further refined the spectral ratio, emphasizing the detection and suppression of narrow frequency bands that may be related to industrial activity. The results demonstrated the reappearance of the 1.5 Hz frequency, but this time without narrow bandwidths, indicating its possible correlation with the natural ground movement. Fundamental periods, ranging from 0.45 s to 0.88 s, suggest a diverse lithological composition, indicating the presence of layers of sands, clays, conglomerates, and carbonates over a basement that represents the main impedance contrast in the area. The multispectral approach surpasses conventional methods in precision and reliability, providing valuable insights for earthquake risk assessment, urban planning, and engineering decisions in seismically active regions. Purpose: Post-operative urinary retention (POUR) is a known complication of hernia surgery. Minimally invasive inguinal hernia repair (IHR) is typically done under general anesthesia with neuromuscular blockade (NMB), which is commonly reversed with an anticholinesterase inhibitor paired with an anticholinergic agent. Sugammadex is a unique NMB reversal agent that does not have to be paired with an anticholinergic. We sought to explore the role of sugammadex in reducing the rate of POUR following these procedures. Methods: Data were collected retrospectively at a single institution between February 2016 and October 2019. We identified and studied patients who underwent minimally invasive IHR and received either sugammadex or neostigmine/glycopyrrolate for NMB reversal. The primary endpoint was POUR requiring bladder catheterization. Secondary endpoints included post-operative and 30-day readmissions. Results: 274 patients were included in this study (143 received neostigmine and glycopyrrolate, 131 sugammadex). The sugammadex patients were on average 5 years older than the neostigmine/ glycopyrrolate patients (63.2 vs 58.2, p = 0.003), and received less median intravenous fluids (IVF) (900 ml vs 1000 ml; p = 0.015). There was a significant difference in the rate of POUR between the sugammadex and neostigmine/glycopyrrolate patients (0.0% vs 8.4%, p ≤ 0.001). The difference remained significant after controlling for age and IVF. The odds of POUR for those who received neostigmine/glycopyrrolate were 25 × higher than the odds of those who received sugammadex. Mental health concerns among juvenile-justice-involved youth (JJIY) continue to be a major health crisis in the United States (US). While scholarship has explored mental health concerns among JJIY, and the link to negative life outcomes, there are gaps in the existing research, particularly in effective interventions and models aimed at addressing both the mental health concerns and criminogenic risk contributing to recidivism and other negative life outcomes of this population. In this paper, we present Justice-Based Interdisciplinary Collective Care (JBICC), an innovative framework to address both the mental health needs and delinquent behavior of youth offenders. The model bridges community partners, with the purpose of informing future interventions, implementations, and research in this area. Increased justice-based interdisciplinary collective collaboration between the juvenile justice system and community programs/organizations would be a major benefit to youth offenders and their families. We also focus on the need for cultural responsiveness to be interwoven throughout all aspects of treatment. JBICC offers an opportunity to expanded services outside traditional settings and methods to ensure that youth offenders and their families receive validating and culturally responsive access to services. Epithelial monolayers are some of the best-studied models for collective cell migration due to their abundance in multicellular systems and their tractability. Experimentally, the collective migration of epithelial monolayers can be robustly steered e.g. using electric fields, via a process termed electrotaxis. Theoretically, however, the question of how to design an electric field to achieve a desired spatiotemporal movement pattern is underexplored. In this work, we construct and calibrate an ordinary differential equation model to predict the average velocity of the centre of mass of a cellular monolayer in response to stimulation with an electric field. We use this model, in conjunction with optimal control theory, to derive physically realistic optimal electric field designs to achieve a variety of aims, including maximising the total distance travelled by the monolayer, maximising the monolayer velocity, and keeping the monolayer velocity constant during stimulation. Together, this work is the first to present a unified framework for optimal control of collective monolayer electrotaxis and provides a blueprint to optimally steer collective migration using other external cues. Quercetin is a flavonoid with promising therapeutic applications; nonetheless, the phenotype exerted in some diseases is contradictory. For instance, anticancer properties may be explained by a cytotoxic mechanism, whereas antioxidant-related neuroprotection is a pro-survival process. According to the available literature, quercetin exerts a redox interaction with the electron transport chain (ETC) in the mitochondrion, affecting its membrane potential. It also affects ATP generation by oxidative phosphorylation, where ATP deprivation could partly explain its cytotoxic effect. Moreover, quercetin may support the generation of free radicals through redox reactions, causing a prooxidant effect. The nutrimental stress and prooxidant effect induced by quercetin might promote pro-survival properties such as antioxidant processes. The proposed role of CDH1 (E-cadherin gene) methylation as a mechanism of gene inactivation in invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) remains inconclusive. For many years, CDH1 promoter hypermethylation has been regarded as a mechanism for gene inactivation in ILC. However, this assumption has primarily relied on non-quantitative assays, which have reported CDH1 methylation frequencies ranging from 26 to 93% at CpG sites within the island region. Few studies employing quantitative methods and covering CpG island shores, regions of relatively low CpG density situated proximal to conventional promoter CpGs, have been conducted, revealing lower percentages of methylation ranging from 0 to 51%. Therefore, using the quantitative pyrosequencing method, we examined CDH1 methylation in the island region and shores in E-cadherin deficient ILC cases (15 with CDH1 mutation and 22 non-mutated), 19 cases of invasive breast carcinomas non-special type (IBC-NSTs), and five cases of usual ductal hyperplasia (UDH). Our analysis revealed CDH1 methylation frequencies ranging from 3 to 64%, with no significant increase in methylation levels in any group of ILCs (median = 12%) compared to IBC-NST (median = 15%). In addition, considering the poorly studied association between the number of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and CDH1 methylation in breast cancer, we undertook a thorough analysis within our dataset. Our findings revealed a positive correlation between CDH1 methylation and the presence of TILs (r = 0.5; p-value < 0.05), shedding light on an aspect of breast cancer biology warranting further investigation. Ozone therapy acts in the body inducing controlled oxidative stress, thereby improving the antioxidant, immune and circulatory responses. However, very little is known about how this therapy affects oxidative stress indicators in dogs. We aimed to assess the clinical, hematological, biochemical and oxidative stress parameters of healthy dogs subjected to ozone therapy and oxygen therapy by rectal insufflation. Ten healthy dogs were allocated into three experimental groups in a cross-over design: control, without intervention; ozone, which received 100 µg of O3/kg through rectal insufflation; and oxygen, which received an ozone-equivalent volume of medicinal O2 through rectal insufflation. Dogs received four applications weekly and were followed up until the seventh week. Ozone therapy significantly increased the weight, mean corpuscular volume and mean platelet volume and decreased total cholesterol of treated dogs. Regarding oxidative stress, ozone therapy reduced total antioxidant capacity by ferric reduction (TAC-FRAP) in D7 compared with baseline and the control, significantly increased total antioxidant capacity by cupric reduction (TAC-CUPRAC) in D42 and D49 compared with the control group, caused an increase in uric acid compared with the oxygen group and decreased lipid peroxidation on D21 compared with the control group. In conclusion, ozone therapy through rectal insufflation causes transient oxidative stress followed by an antioxidant response and discreetly interferes with a few clinical, hematological and biochemical variables in healthy dogs, although variables still remained within the reference ranges for the species, thus proving the safety of the therapy. Surfactants are organic compounds capable of altering the surface or interfacial tension of a system; they alter the hormonal system of aquatic organisms and can penetrate porous materials, disperse solid particles, emulsify oils and fats or produce foam when agitated. They are used in the manufacture of cleaning and personal hygiene products, manufacturing of products with agricultural, industrial and commercial applications. But they are highly polluting due to their special chemical composition, they cause eutrophication problems in natural bodies of water due to the amount discharged and the frequency with which they are discharged, in addition to affecting ecosystems. One of the most used anionic surfactants in the manufacture of commercial detergents due to its excellent detersive properties and low cost, is LAS. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of the concentration and organic loading rate of the anionic surfactant "LAS" on the performance of a two-stage anaerobic reactors system for its simultaneous biodegradation. The results showed that both at concentrations of 200 mg/L (experiment V) and 300 mg/L of "LAS" (experiment VI), the acidogenic reactor showed greater robustness in the biodegradation (86.7 and 55%) at an organic loading rate of 5.92 ± 0.04 and 6.8 ± 0.09 kgCOD/m3.d; the methanogenic reactor was more sensitive to the presence of the surfactant (experiments V and VI), biodegrading it by 13.8 and 14.3% with respect to the LAS remaining in the effluent of the acidogenic reactor with which it was fed, to 3.56 ± 0.02 and 4.48 ± 0.15 kgCOD/m3.d respectively. To address pediatric asthma disparities on the South Side of Chicago, a community health worker (CHW) home visiting intervention was implemented collaboratively by academic institutions and community based health centers. This evaluation assessed the effectiveness of this longitudinal quality improvement CHW intervention in reducing asthma morbidity and healthcare utilization. All patients aged 2–18 who met the high-risk clinical criteria in outpatient settings or those who visited the ED due to asthma were offered the program. A within-subject study design analyzed asthma morbidity and healthcare utilization at baseline and follow-up. Multivariable mixed-effects regression models, adjusted for baseline demographic and asthma characteristics, were used to assess changes over time. Among 123 patients, the average age was 8.8 (4.4) years, and 89.3% were non-Hispanic black. Significant reductions were observed in the average daytime symptoms days (baseline 4.1 days and follow-up 1.6 days), night-time symptoms days (3.0 days and 1.2 days), and days requiring rescue medication (4.1 days and 1.6 days) in the past two weeks (all p < 0.001). The average number of emergency department visits decreased from 0.92 one year before to 0.44 one year after program participation, a 52% reduction (p < 0.001). No significant difference was found in hospital admissions. These results support the use of a collaborative approach to implement the CHW home visiting program as part of standard care for pediatric asthma patients in urban settings. Decidualisation of the endometrium is a key event in early pregnancy, which enables embryo implantation. Importantly, the molecular processes impairing decidualisation in obese mothers are yet to be characterised. We hypothesise that impaired decidualisation in obese mice is mediated by the upregulation of leptin modulators, the suppressor of cytokine signalling 3 (SOCS3) and the protein tyrosine phosphatase non-receptor type 2 (PTPN2), together with the disruption of progesterone (P4)-signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT3) signalling. After feeding mice with chow diet (CD) or high-fat diet (HFD) for 16 weeks, we confirmed the downregulation of P4 and oestradiol (E2) steroid receptors in decidua from embryonic day (E) 6.5 and decreased proliferation of stromal cells from HFD. In vitro decidualised mouse endometrial stromal cells (MESCs) and E6.5 deciduas from the HFD showed decreased expression of decidualisation markers, followed by the upregulation of SOCS3 and PTPN2 and decreased phosphorylation of STAT3. In vivo and in vitro leptin treatment of mice and MESCs mimicked the results observed in the obese model. The downregulation of Socs3 and Ptpn2 after siRNA transfection of MESCs from HFD mice restored the expression level of decidualisation markers. Finally, DIO mice placentas from E18.5 showed decreased labyrinth development and vascularisation and fetal growth restricted embryos. The present study revealed major defects in decidualisation in obese mice, characterised by altered uterine response to E2 and P4 steroid signalling. Importantly, altered hormonal response was associated with increased expression of leptin signalling modulators SOCS3 and PTPN2. In-memory computing (IMC) represents a promising approach to reducing latency and enhancing the energy efficiency of operations required for calculating convolution products of images. This study proposes a fully differential current-mode architecture for computing image convolutions across all four quadrants, intended for deep learning applications within CMOS imagers utilizing IMC near the CMOS sensor. This architecture processes analog signals provided by a CMOS sensor without the need for analog-to-digital conversion. Furthermore, it eliminates the necessity for data transfer between memory and analog operators as convolutions are computed within modified SRAM memory. The paper suggests modifying the structure of a CMOS SRAM cell by incorporating transistors capable of performing multiplications between binary (−1 or +1) weights and analog signals. Modified SRAM cells can be interconnected to sum the multiplication results obtained from individual cells. This approach facilitates connecting current inputs to different SRAM cells, offering highly scalable and parallelized calculations. For this study, a configurable module comprising nine modified SRAM cells with peripheral circuitry has been designed to calculate the convolution product on each pixel of an image using a 3 × 3 mask with binary values (−1 or 1). Subsequently, an IMC module has been designed to perform 16 convolution operations in parallel, with input currents shared among the 16 modules. This configuration enables the computation of 16 convolutions simultaneously, processing a column per cycle. A digital control circuit manages both the readout or memorization of digital weights, as well as the multiply and add operations in real-time. The architecture underwent testing by performing convolutions between binary masks of 3 × 3 values and images of 32 × 32 pixels to assess accuracy and scalability when two IMC modules are vertically integrated. Convolution weights are stored locally as 1-bit digital values. The circuit was synthesized in 180 nm CMOS technology, and simulation results indicate its capability to perform a complete convolution in 3.2 ms, achieving an efficiency of 11,522 1-b TOPS/W (1-b tera-operations per second per watt) with a similarity to ideal processing of 96%. Purpose: To evaluate the impact of sustained hypogonadism after androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) associated with radiotherapy in prostate cancer (PCa) patients with biochemical relapse-free survival (bRFS). Methods: A retrospective cohort analysis of 213 consecutive PCa patients referred for radiotherapy plus ADT was carried out. Follow-up times including time to testosterone recovery (TTR) and bRFS were calculated from the end of ADT. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses predicting bRFS were used. The optimal cutoffs for TTR and duration of ADT were determined using the maximally selected rank statistics (MSRS). Results: After a median follow-up of 104 months, 18 patients relapsed among those who had recovered testosterone levels and 9 among those who did not. Median ADT duration was 36 months. The optimal cutoff for TTR was determined using MSRS. TTR >48 months was significantly associated with better bRFS (logrank, p < 0.0027). Five-year bRFS was 100% for >48 months vs. 85% for <48 months. TTR was the only significant variable for bRFS in multivariate Cox analysis. Objectives: Maternal mortality and morbidity disproportionately affect birthing people from racialized populations. Unfortunately, researchers can often compound these poor outcomes through a lack of authentic community engagement in research beyond the role of the research subject, leading to ineffective strategies for improving care and increasing equity. This article details the real-life strategies utilized to develop a community-engaged research project of a phased federally funded grant employing community engagement principles of co-leadership and co-creation. It also includes reflections from the researchers and advisory board on promising practices and lessons learned for equitably engaging patients and community partners in research. Methods: This article details the application of principles of community-engaged research in a federally funded phased research project focused on understanding disparities in maternal sepsis to develop better clinical and community interventions. Specifically, it discusses early steps in the research partnership to create a sustainable partnership with a Community Leadership Board guided by the principles of transparency, respect, compensation, and increasing research justice. Results: Based on the authors' experience, recommendations are provided for funders, researchers, and institutions to improve the quality and outcomes of communityengaged research. This work adds to community-based participatory and community-engaged research literature by providing concrete and practical steps for equitably engaging in research partnerships with a variety of collaborators. Conclusions: In conclusion, integrated patient and community co-leadership enhances research by providing insight, access to communities for education and dissemination of information, and identifying critical areas needing change. This report may help others address fundamental principles in this journey. Significance: Community-engaged research can be an equitable approach to research that involves communities most affected by empowering them to guide the research as equal partners. This article serves as a guide for researchers to form these critical partnerships, sustain relationships, and recommend solutions to common challenges based on the reflections of the researchers and advisory board. Purpose: To describe the clinical, audiological, and psychometric features observed in patients with chronic tinnitus and rare variants in the ANK2 gene. Methods: We report a case series of 12 patients with chronic tinnitus and heterozygous variants in the ANK2 gene. Tinnitus phenotyping included audiological (standard and high-frequency audiometry, Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABR) and Auditory Middle Latency Responses (AMLR)), psychoacoustic and psychometric assessment by a Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for tinnitus annoyance, the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), the test on Hypersensitivity to Sound (THS-GÜF), the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Results: All patients reported a persistent, unilateral noise-type tinnitus, mainly described as white noise or narrowband noise. Seven patients (58%) were considered to have extreme phenotype (THI score > 76), and all patients reported some degree of hyperacusis (THS-GÜF score > 18 in 75% of patients). Seven patients scored MoCA < 26, regardless of the age reported, suggesting a mild cognitive disorder. ABR showed no significant differences in latencies and amplitudes between ears with or without tinnitus. Similarly, the latencies of Pa, Pb waves, and NaPa complex in the AMLR did not differ based on the presence of tinnitus. However, there were statistical differences in the amplitudes of Pa waves in AMLR, with significantly greater amplitudes observed in ears with tinnitus. Conclusion: Patients with ANK2 variants and severe tinnitus exhibit an endophenotype featuring hyperacusis, persistent noise-like tinnitus, high-frequency hearing loss, and decreased amplitudes in AMLR. Introduction: Adherence to cardiovascular drug treatment can significantly benefit from a reduced pill burden, but data on this matter derived from real-life settings are currently scanty. This analysis assessed the possible changes in adherence in patients treated with rosuvastatin and ezetimibe (ROS/EZE) as free multi-pill combination who switched to ROS/EZE as single-pill combination in the setting of real clinical practice in Italy. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the administrative databases for a catchment area of about seven million health-assisted residents. Adults receiving ROS/EZE as a single-pill combination from January 2010 to June 2020 (followed up to 2021) were identified. The date of the first prescription of single-pill combination of ROS/EZE was considered as the index date. The analysis included the users of ROS/EZE as a free combination during the year before the index date. Baseline demographic and clinical characteristics were collected during the period of data availability prior to the index date. Adherence to therapy was evaluated as proportion of days covered (PDC), namely the percentage of days during which a patient had access to medication, in the 12-month interval preceding or following the index date (PDC < 25% non-adherence; PDC = 25–75% partial adherence; PDC > 75% adherence). Results: A total of 1219 patients (61.1% male, aged 66.2 ± 10.4 years) were included. Cardiovascular comorbidities were found in 83.3% of them, diabetes in 26.4%, and a combination of both in 16.2%. Single-pill combination of ROS/EZE was associated with a higher proportion of adherent patients compared to free-pill combination (75.2% vs 51.8%, p < 0.001). Conclusions: This real-world analysis suggested that switching from a regimen based on separate pills to one based on a single-pill combination resulted in improved adherence to ROS/EZE therapy. Plain Language Summary: Lipid-lowering therapy to control low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels is essential for cardiovascular risk prevention. Successful therapy depends on the type of lipid-lowering therapy, i.e., low or high statin intensity and combination of statins with ezetimibe or proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors, and adherence to therapy, i.e., whether the patient actually takes their pills as prescribed. If there are fewer pills to be taken, this can help patients to follow their treatment. Single-pill combinations of two drugs could facilitate adherence and thus the chances of reaching the recommended lipid targets. Here, we analyzed a sample of Italian patients with dyslipidemia to examine whether the switch from a free combination of two separate pills of rosuvastatin and ezetimibe to a single-pill combination of the same drugs could improve adherence to therapy. We found that the proportion of adherent patients increased from about just over half (51.8%) to about three-fourths (75.1%) when switching from two-pill to single-pill combination of rosuvastatin and ezetimibe. These findings suggest that simplifying therapy can help improve patient adherence, which is essential for reaching lipid targets and ultimately for alleviating atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Tetralogy of Fallot is the most common cyanotic congenital heart disease. For decades, our institution has cared for humanitarian patients with late presentation of tetralogy of Fallot. They are characterized by severe right ventricular hypertrophy with consecutive diastolic dysfunction, increasing the risk of postoperative low cardiac output syndrome (LCOS). By right ventricular restrictive physiology, we hypothesized that patients receiving early postoperative beta-blockers (within 48 h after cardiopulmonary bypass) may have better diastolic function and cardiac output. This is a retrospective cohort study in a single-center tertiary pediatric intensive care unit. We included > 1-year-old humanitarian patients with a confirmed diagnosis of tetralogy of Fallot undergoing a complete surgical repair between 2005 and 2019. We measured demographic data, preoperative echocardiographic and cardiac catheterization measures, postoperative mean heart rate, vasoactive-inotropic scores, LCOS scores, length of stay, and mechanical ventilation duration. One hundred sixty-five patients met the inclusion criteria. Fifty-nine patients (36%) received early postoperative beta-blockers, associated with a lower mean heart rate, higher vasoactive-inotropic scores, and lower LCOS scores during the first 48 h following cardiopulmonary bypass. There was no significant difference in lengths of stay and ventilation. Conclusion: Early postoperative beta-blockers lower the prevalence of postoperative LCOS at the expense of a higher need for vasoactive drugs without any consequence on length of stay and ventilation duration. This approach may benefit the specific population of children undergoing a late complete repair of tetralogy of Fallot. Objective: Presurgical differentiation between astrocytomas and oligodendrogliomas remains an unresolved challenge in neuro-oncology. This research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of each tumor's DSC-PWI signatures, evaluate the discriminative capacity of cerebral blood volume (CBV) and percentage of signal recovery (PSR) percentile values, and explore the synergy of CBV and PSR combination for pre-surgical differentiation. Methods: Patients diagnosed with grade 2 and 3 IDH-mutant astrocytomas and IDH-mutant 1p19q-codeleted oligodendrogliomas were retrospectively retrieved (2010–2022). 3D segmentations of each tumor were conducted, and voxel-level CBV and PSR were extracted to compute mean, minimum, maximum, and percentile values. Statistical comparisons were performed using the Mann-Whitney U test and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC-ROC). Lastly, the five most discriminative variables were combined for classification with internal cross-validation. Results: The study enrolled 52 patients (mean age 45-year-old, 28 men): 28 astrocytomas and 24 oligodendrogliomas. Oligodendrogliomas exhibited higher CBV and lower PSR than astrocytomas across all metrics (e.g., mean CBV = 2.05 and 1.55, PSR = 0.68 and 0.81 respectively). The highest AUC-ROCs and the smallest p values originated from CBV and PSR percentiles (e.g., PSRp70 AUC-ROC = 0.84 and p value = 0.0005, CBVp75 AUC-ROC = 0.8 and p value = 0.0006). The mean, minimum, and maximum values yielded lower results. Combining the best five variables (PSRp65, CBVp70, PSRp60, CBVp75, and PSRp40) achieved a mean AUC-ROC of 0.87 for differentiation. Conclusions: Oligodendrogliomas exhibit higher CBV and lower PSR than astrocytomas, traits that are emphasized when considering percentiles rather than mean or extreme values. The combination of CBV and PSR percentiles results in promising classification outcomes. Clinical relevance statement: The combination of histogram-derived percentile values of cerebral blood volume and percentage of signal recovery from DSC-PWI enhances the presurgical differentiation between astrocytomas and oligodendrogliomas, suggesting that incorporating these metrics into clinical practice could be beneficial. Background: IL-6 is a pleiotropic cytokine modulating inflammation and metabolic pathways. Its proinflammatory effect plays a significant role in organ failure pathogenesis, commonly elevated in systemic inflammatory conditions. Extracorporeal blood purification devices, such as the Advanced Organ Support (ADVOS) multi hemodialysis system, might offer potential in mitigating IL-6's detrimental effects, yet its efficacy remains unreported. Methods: We conducted a proof-of-concept in vitro study to assess the ADVOS multi system's efficacy in eliminating IL-6. Varying concentrations of IL-6 were introduced into a swine blood model and treated with ADVOS multi for up to 12 h, employing different blood and concentrate flow rates. IL-6 reduction rate, clearance, and dynamics in blood and dialysate were analyzed. Results: IL-6 clearance rates of 0.70 L/h and 0.42 L/h were observed in 4 and 12-h experiments, respectively. No significant differences were noted across different initial concentrations. Reduction rates ranged between 40 and 46% within the first 4 h, increasing up to 72% over 12 h, with minimal impact from flow rate variations. Our findings suggest that an IL-6-albumin interaction and convective filtration are implicated in in vitro IL-6 elimination with ADVOS multi. Conclusions: This study demonstrates for the first time an efficient and continuous in vitro removal of IL-6 by ADVOS multi at low blood flow rates. Initial concentration-dependent removal transitions to more consistent elimination over time. Further clinical investigations are imperative for comprehensive data acquisition. Electron tomography has become a commonly used tool to investigate the three-dimensional (3D) structure of nanomaterials, including colloidal nanoparticle assemblies. However, electron microscopy is typically done under high-vacuum conditions, requiring sample preparation for assemblies obtained by wet colloid chemistry methods. This involves solvent evaporation and deposition on a solid support, which consistently alters the nanoparticle organization. Here, we suggest using electron tomography to study nanoparticle assemblies in their original colloidal liquid environment. To address the challenges related to electron tomography in liquid, we devise a method that combines fast data acquisition in a commercial liquid-cell with a dedicated alignment and reconstruction workflow. We present the advantages of this methodology in accurately characterizing two different systems. 3D reconstructions of assemblies comprising polystyrene-capped Au nanoparticles encapsulated in polymeric shells reveal less compact and more distorted configurations for experiments performed in a liquid medium compared to their dried counterparts. A similar expansion can be observed in quantitative analysis of the surface-to-surface distances of self-assembled Au nanorods in water rather than in a vacuum, in agreement with bulk measurements. This study, therefore, emphasizes the importance of developing high-resolution characterization tools that preserve the native environment of colloidal nanostructures. Drying force-induced deformation complicates the characterization of the 3D structure of colloidal assemblies. This article discusses the molecular landscape of FLT3 gene alterations in myeloid neoplasms (MNs), specifically acute myeloid leukemia (AML). FLT3 mutations, including internal tandem duplications (ITD) and mutations in the activation loop (AL), are common in AML and have been associated with poor prognosis. However, the presence and clinical implications of non-canonical FLT3 mutations (FLT3NC) have been less explored. The study analyzed a cohort of MN patients and found that FLT3NC alterations were more prevalent in non-AML MNs compared to AML. Additionally, the study identified three cases of germline FLT3NC, suggesting a potential role of hypomorphic germline FLT3 mutations in somatic gene rescue and leukemogenesis. The first therapeutical goal followed by neurooncological surgeons dealing with prefrontal gliomas is attempting supramarginal tumor resection preserving relevant neurological function. Therefore, advanced knowledge of the frontal aslant tract (FAT) functional neuroanatomy in high-order cognitive domains beyond language and speech processing would help refine neurosurgeries, predicting possible relevant cognitive adverse events and maximizing the surgical efficacy. To this aim we performed the recently developed correlational tractography analyses to evaluate the possible relationship between FAT's microstructural properties and cognitive functions in 27 healthy subjects having ultra-high-field (7-Tesla) diffusion MRI. We independently assessed FAT segments innervating the dorsolateral prefrontal cortices (dlPFC-FAT) and the supplementary motor area (SMA-FAT). FAT microstructural robustness, measured by the tract's quantitative anisotropy (QA), was associated with a better performance in episodic memory, visuospatial orientation, cognitive processing speed and fluid intelligence but not sustained selective attention tests. Overall, the percentual tract volume showing an association between QA-index and improved cognitive scores (pQACV) was higher in the SMA-FAT compared to the dlPFC-FAT segment. This effect was right-lateralized for verbal episodic memory and fluid intelligence and bilateralized for visuospatial orientation and cognitive processing speed. Our results provide novel evidence for a functional specialization of the FAT beyond the known in language and speech processing, particularly its involvement in several higher-order cognitive domains. In light of these findings, further research should be encouraged to focus on neurocognitive deficits and their impact on patient outcomes after FAT damage, especially in the context of glioma surgery. The excessive accumulation and malfunctioning of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is a major determinant of increased risk of obesity-related comorbidities. Thus, risk stratification of people living with obesity according to their amount of VAT is of clinical interest. Currently, the most common VAT measurement methods include mathematical formulae based on anthropometric dimensions, often biased by human measurement errors, bio-impedance, and image techniques such as X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) analysis, which requires specialized equipment. However, previous studies showed the possibility of classifying people living with obesity according to their VAT through blood chemical concentrations by applying machine learning techniques. In addition, most of the efforts were spent on men living with obesity while little was done for women. Therefore, this study aims to compare the performance of the multilinear regression model (MLR) in estimating VAT and six different supervised machine learning classifiers, including logistic regression (LR), support vector machine and decision tree-based models, to categorize 149 women living with obesity. For clustering, the study population was categorized into classes 0, 1, and 2 according to their VAT and the accuracy of each MLR and classification model was evaluated using DXA-data (DXAdata), blood chemical concentrations (BLDdata), and both DXAdata and BLDdata together (ALLdata). Estimation error and R 2 were computed for MLR, while receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and precision-recall curves (PR) area under the curve (AUC) were used to assess the performance of every classification model. MLR models showed a poor ability to estimate VAT with mean absolute error ≥ 401.40 and R 2 ≤ 0.62 in all the datasets. The highest accuracy was found for LR with values of 0.57, 0.63, and 0.53 for ALLdata, DXAdata, and BLDdata, respectively. The ROC AUC showed a poor ability of both ALLdata and DXAdata to distinguish class 1 from classes 0 and 2 (AUC = 0.31, 0.71, and 0.85, respectively) as also confirmed by PR (AUC = 0.24, 0.57, and 0.73, respectively). However, improved performances were obtained when applying LR model to BLDdata (ROC AUC ≥ 0.61 and PR AUC ≥ 0.42), especially for class 1. These results seem to suggest that, while a direct and reliable estimation of VAT was not possible in our cohort, blood sample-derived information can robustly classify women living with obesity by machine learning-based classifiers, a fact that could benefit the clinical practice, especially in those health centres where medical imaging devices are not available. A total of 120,000 tonnes per year of crop waste from contaminated land has been used as a feedstock for anaerobic digestion (AD). This produces only around 20% of biogas from the total crop and results in a large amount of digestate with heavy metal content. This crop digestate was analyzed across a calendar year to identify the variation in composition, and any potential high-value components that could be targeted for recovery. The chemical characterization revealed that approximately 65% of this residual waste is lignocellulosic material (20% hemicellulose, 24% cellulose, 24% lignin) and about 10% is ash, with no observable difference across the seasons. Three different pyrolysis technologies were studied with the same crop digestate as alternative route to maximize the value of this solid residue by transforming this lignocellulosic material into further bio-based products. Slow pyrolysis at operating temperatures between 355 and 530 °C resulted in bio-oil yields of 35–46% wt, fast pyrolysis at 460–560 °C produced 36–40% wt, and microwave pyrolysis using a power input of 500 and 700 W generated 8–27% wt from the digestate. Chemical compounds found in these bio-oils were categorized into seven chemical groups: acids, aldehydes and ketones, alcohols, furans, sugars, phenolics, and others. Although asexuality became a growing research subject over the last decade, data on the mental health of individuals identifying as asexual is still rare. The key objective of the present study was to examine depressive symptoms among individuals identifying as asexual. Data of LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Trans*, Queer, Inter*, Asexual and/or + indicating others within the community) and cisgender heterosexual individuals was collected through an online survey during the COVID-19 lockdowns in Germany. The survey included questions about sexual and gender identity, depressive symptoms, and asexual identity. An analysis of N = 6601 participants was conducted. A total of n = 445 individuals identified as asexual. Regression results indicated identifying as asexual being significantly associated with higher depressive symptoms. Results suggest that individuals identifying as asexual represent a vulnerable group within the group of sexual minorities, one that fundamentally requires special psychosocial support, especially in times of pandemics.
