While psychiatric and physical comorbidities in severe mental illness (SMI) have been associated with increased mortality and poor clinical outcomes, problem has received little attention in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This study established the prevalence of psychiatric (schizophrenia, bipolar affective disorder, and recurrent major depressive disorder) and physical (HIV/AIDS, syphilis, hypertension and obesity) comorbidities and associated factors among 1201 out-patients with SMI (schizophrenia, depression and bipolar affective disorder) attending care at two hospitals in Uganda. Participants completed an assessment battery including structured, standardised and locally translated instruments. SMIs were established using the MINI International Neuropsychiatric Interview version 7.2. We used logistic regression to determine the association between physical and psychiatric comorbidities and potential risk factors. Bipolar affective disorder was the most prevalent (66.4%) psychiatric diagnoses followed by schizophrenia (26.6%) and recurrent major depressive disorder (7.0%). Prevalence of psychiatric comorbidity was 9.1%, while physical disorder comorbidity was 42.6%. Specific comorbid physical disorders were hypertension (27.1%), obesity (13.8%), HIV/AIDS (8.2%) and syphilis (4.8%). Potentially modifiable factors independently significantly associated with psychiatric and physical comorbidities were: use of alcohol for both syphilis and hypertension comorbidities; and use of a mood stabilisers and khat in comorbidity with obesity. Only psychiatric comorbidity was positively associated with the negative outcomes of suicidality and risky sexual behaviour. The healthcare models for psychiatric care in LMICs such as Uganda should be optimised to address the high burden of psychiatric and physical comorbidities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a highly contagious, trans-boundary viral disease of sheep and goats that have hindered successful small ruminant farming. Its current status in South East Nigeria with respect to its prevalence and farmers' awareness was studied. Three states, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Enugu, were randomly selected for the study. Sera samples from 113 goats and 172 sheep (collected from December 2017 to June 2018) were randomly collected and analysed for the presence of PPRV antibodies, while structured interview schedules were conducted to elicit information on farmers' awareness of the disease and PPR vaccination and use of veterinary services. An overall seroprevalence of 42.5% (121/285) was recorded. The seroprevalence in decreasing order was 62.2% (Enugu), 34.8% (Anambra) and 20.3% (Ebonyi). There was a significant association (X2 = 36.08, df = 2, p = 0.0001) between seroprevalence and the state sampled. Lack of awareness of PPR vaccination among small ruminant farmers, their limited use of veterinary services (38% consult veterinarians) and non-availability of the vaccine at veterinary establishments in the sampled states are potential risk factors of PPR prevalence in South East Nigeria. Consequently, an effective control measure like mass vaccination is recommended for the study area. Also, there is a need for an extension program for stakeholders and farmers in the study area and country on the grave importance and economic benefits of PPR vaccination and the use of veterinary services. Introduction and hypothesis: The aims of the present study were to determine the types of UI among women visiting the urology department, to identify the potential risk factors associated with each type of UI, and to identify healthcare-seeking behaviors of affected women in our region. Methods: The data of 617 community-dwelling women, who were at least 18 years of age or older and who presented with a complaint of UI ongoing over a year, and those without UI, who were admitted for any other reason, from June 2010 to April 2012, were evaluated. Results: Mean age was 51.29 years (range 18-110 years); median parity was 3.54 (range 0-11) and 88.2 % of the women were married. Mean BMI was 28.01 kg/m. Very few women (18.5 %) accepted UI as a disease and searched for medical help by themselves; however, the remaining women (81.5 %) were brought or directed for evaluation by someone else. Stress UI was reported by 43 women (10.5 %), urge UI and mixed UI were noted by 153 (37.5 %) and 212 (52 %) women respectively. Conclusions: The most frequent type of UI was mixed UI in our region. Age, BMI, multiparity, and hypertension were identified to have a different importance for each type of UI, but diabetes mellitus, birth trauma, gynecological surgery, lumbar disc hernia (LDH), and multiple sclerosis (MS) were the other important related factors. However, a small number of patients accepted UI as a disease and searched for therapy. This reveals that the public should be informed in detail about female UI in developing countries. To identify potential risk factors for hearing loss from the infant with high risk criteria as guided by the Joint Committee on Infant Hearing (JCIH, 2000). 490 infants with age range of 2 days to 6 months who had undergone detailed audiological evaluation during for the period of 3 years at Gauhati Medical College Hospital were taken for the study. The hearing screening was performed on each infant using Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emission (DPOAE) testing. The infants who failed DPO-AEs screening were followed up and Auditory Brainstem Response testing. Out of 490 high risk infants who had undergone detailed audiological evaluation 145 infants were found to be having hearing loss. Out of 145 infants 73 infants were male and 72 infants were female. The risk factor for hearing loss with the highest incidence was hyperbilirubenemia, Apgar scores of 0-4 at 1 min or 0-6 at 5 min was the second most prevalent risk factor, followed by TORCH infections. This study suggests the need for review of high risk register that is used along with the physiological and electrophysiological hearing test to screen the infants. The high risk register remains helpful in determining follow up plans so that children who may develop late onset of hearing loss will not be missed. Being aware of which risk factors are more likely to cause hearing loss in infants would be helpful to plan for follow up these children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
