Experimental tests performed on scaled masonry buildings provide key information to improve the knowledge under seismic actions. Masonry buildings behavior is strongly influenced by their physical and mechanical parameters under dynamic actions. In fact, the actual structural behavior is very complex to predict due to the significant variability of the input parameters and the strong heterogeneity of masonry. Furthermore, the behavior of masonry buildings is often influenced by the interaction with adjacent building units. In this context, the SERA AIMS project aims to improve knowledge on the interaction between adjacent buildings. In order to assess the seismic capacity of masonry structures and their damage evolution, nonlinear models often require a numerical calibration of nonlinear parameters. Simplified Finite Element (FE) models, with some very simple assumptions, can be more suitable for complex problems like as the interaction between adjacent building aggregates. The low initial knowledge level in the SERA AIMS blind competition favored simple assumptions. The availability of simple models allowed to perform consecutive time histories including the cumulative effects of previous signals. In fact, the tested prototype was subjected to many replicas. The masonry structure and the crucial interfaces between the units have been modelled by means of nonlinear elements according to the reduced knowledge level at the blind prediction stage. The main goal was to estimate the key information of a masonry building under seismic action like as: triggering and the type of damage at the most stressed areas and therefore the load threshold at which evident damage is expected. Global FE model provides information on the global behaviour (in plane behaviour), while, according to the failure models typically found in masonry buildings, kinematic analyses have been performed to assess the out of plane (local) behaviour, too. The numerical results obtained by the preliminary analysis have been compared with the experimentally detected damages. The simplified approach, based on limited information without calibration, discussed in this paper, represents a useful support tool to design dynamic tests on full-scale or scaled masonry buildings, but also to assess the vulnerability of real masonry structures. Two models of the 10-story reinforced concrete building tested at E-Defense laboratory in 2015 are built: the F model, in which nonlinear behavior is distributed over the element length, and the H model, in which nonlinear behavior is lumped in plastic hinges with a moment-chord rotation response assigned based on empirical formulations proposed in the literature. Nonlinear time–history analyses are performed to reproduce the experimental shaking-table tests performed at increasing seismic intensity level. The incremental experimental test has been performed twice: the first time (BS test), the structure base was free to slip on a concrete base fixed to the shaking table. After the BS test, a second test was performed on the same structure with the foundation fixed to the concrete base (BF test). Both tests are simulated for both models. When simulating both the BS and BF tests, the seismic input adopted for the numerical analyses is the displacement time-history registered at the base of the specimen's columns, in order to implicitly account for base slip through the input signal without explicitly modeling the slipping devices. It is observed that the significant damage experienced by the specimen during the runs of BF tests at medium–high seismic intensity is probably triggered by softening and damage of beam-column joints: this is reproduced also by H numerical model and highlights the influence of beam-column joints on the overall seismic response of the structure. In general, it is observed that both numerical models, which were constructed, based on experimental data, only by adopting available and well-established tools proposed in the literature, can reproduce the overall response of the case-study structure, especially in terms of maximum top displacement demand and maximum damage state for structural members, provided that beam-column joints' contribution is adequately considered. Currently available performance-based methodologies for assessing the fragility of structures subjected to tsunami neglect the effects of tsunami-induced vertical loads due to internal buoyancy. This paper adopts a generalized methodology for the performance assessment of structures that integrates the effects of buoyancy loads on interior slabs during a tsunami inundation. The methodology is applied in the fragility assessment of three case-study frames (low, mid and high-rise), representative of existing masonry-infilled reinforced concrete (RC) buildings typical of Mediterranean region. The paper shows the effect of modelling buoyancy loads on damage evolution and fragility curves associated with different structural damage mechanisms for existing RC frames with breakaway infill walls including consideration of blow-out slabs. The outcomes attest that buoyancy loads affect the damage assessment of buildings during a tsunami, especially in the case of mid and high-rise structures with blow-out slabs. The rate of occurrence of slabs uplift failure increases with the number of stories of the building, indicating the need to account for such damage mechanism when assessing the performance of structures. It is also found that buoyancy loads slightly affect the fragility curves associated to other structural damage mechanisms for existing RC buildings commonly monitored for fragility assessment. Due to its peculiar histopathological findings, pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma (PXA), a rare cerebral tumor of young adults with a slow growth and a good prognosis, resembles to the lytic phase of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, a fatal neurodegenerative disease caused by JC polyomavirus (JCPyV). Therefore, the presence of JCPyV DNA was examined in an 11-year-old child with xanthoastrocytoma, WHO grade 3, by quantitative PCR (qPCR) and nested PCR (nPCR) using primers amplifying sequences encoding the N- and C-terminal region of large T antigen (LTAg), the non-coding control region (NCCR), and viral protein 1 (VP1) DNA. The expression of transcripts from LTAg and VP1 genes was also evaluated. In addition, viral microRNAs' (miRNAs) expression was investigated. Cellular p53 was also searched at both DNA and RNA level. qPCR revealed the presence of JCPyV DNA with a mean value of 6.0 × 104 gEq/mL. nPCR gave a positive result for the 5ʹ region of the LTAg gene and the NCCR, whereas 3ʹ end LTAg and VP1 DNA sequences were not amplifiable. Only LTAg transcripts of 5ʹ end were found whereas VP1 gene transcript was undetectable. Although in most cases, either Mad-1 or Mad-4 NCCRs have been identified in association with JCPyV-positive human brain neoplasms, the archetype NCCR structure was observed in the patient's sample. Neither viral miRNA miR-J1-5p nor p53 DNA and RNA were detected. Although the expression of LTAg supports the possible role of JCPyV in PXA, further studies are warranted to better understand whether the genesis of xanthoastrocytoma could depend on the transformation capacity of LTAg by Rb sequestration. This paper investigates the role of the horizontal axial force on the in-plane shear and flexural strength of masonry spandrels subjected to seismic actions. Strength criteria included in the main national and international codes take into account for geometrical and material properties, but valuable considerations about the influence of the horizontal axial force are missing. Nevertheless, experimental programs and post-earthquake damage scenarios proved that the horizontal axial force within the spandrels can be also significant under seismic actions, especially when they are surrounded by strength and stiff vertical piers or when significantly compressed by the effect of tensile-resistant elements. As main purpose, the strength criteria proposed by the Italian code for the spandrels have been revised accounting for the effect of the horizontal axial force on its shear and flexural strength. A database containing experimental tests conducted on masonry spandrels was elaborated and used to compare experimental with theoretical results. Outcomes showed that the revised criteria match satisfactorily the experimental results when significant axial forces affect the spandrels, both in terms of strength and failure mechanism. This paper focuses on seismic fragility and damage scenario assessment of minor Italian historical centres through the development of urban fragility curves. With reference to the case study of Balvano, a small centre located in Basilicata Region of Italy, two hybrid models have been adopted. The first is a mechanic-based hybrid model developed by the authors to derive urban fragility curves specifically; the second is the macroseismic method, originally conceived to derive typological fragility curves for single building classes, expanded to derive urban fragility curve herein. Balvano was strongly struck by 1980 Irpinia-Basilicata earthquake (Ms = 6.90) and hence subjected to an intense reconstruction process during 1980s, where almost the 80% of the buildings were reconstructed with reinforced concrete structures in the place of unreinforced masonry ones. Seismic vulnerability and damage scenarios before and after 1980 have been assessed and compared with the purpose of validating the effectiveness of the urban scale fragility curves obtained through hybrid methodologies and quantifying the effect of the 'new' seismic hazard maps and first seismic codes and recommendations released by the Italian Government in the aftermath of 1980 for the construction of new buildings or for retrofitting the existing ones. A good matching between predicted and occurred damage scenario from the research outcomes emerged, confirming the effectiveness of the urban scale hybrid fragility curves to assess seismic vulnerability at urban scale. Moreover, the comparison of the damage scenarios pre and post-reconstruction highlighted the crucial role played by the code prescriptions adopted in that years for reducing the seismic vulnerability of the municipality and the importance of the 'new' seismic hazard maps introduced in 1980s. Recent seismic events worldwide have demonstrated the high vulnerability of existing school buildings and the urgent need to have reliable tools for the rapid seismic performance assessment and damage and loss quantification. Indeed, the significant damage observed on structural and non-structural components may have a significant impact in terms of direct and indirect losses making critical the recovery of stricken communities. Although a significant amount of work has been done in developing fragility curves for the residential building stock, only few contributions clearly refer to school buildings that significantly differ in terms of the main characteristics from the residential ones. This research work proposes fragility curves for reinforced concrete and unreinforced masonry public school buildings typical of the Italian building stock, based on the damage observed in the aftermath of the 2009 L'Aquila earthquake. A comprehensive and unique database including data on damaged and undamaged school buildings (2037 records) in the Abruzzo region was built using data from four different sources. Due to limited amount of data, the fragility curves can be very sensitive to the method adopted for their derivation, thus three different approaches (i.e. empirical, empirical-binomial, heuristic) are considered in the paper and the results are compared. Assessment of churches based on empirical data at a territorial scale is a suitable tool to have an overview of the seismic behaviour of this peculiar structural typology and to evaluate their current state of vulnerability. Fragility and vulnerability curves are also aimed to perform the analysis of different seismic scenarios. The paper presents a detailed typological analysis of 633 single-nave churches, as a selected subset of the database previously examined by the authors, with the aim of evaluating more in detail the influence of some parameters, such as masonry typology, church dimensions and presence of the bell tower, on the vulnerability of the overall church. Then, specific analyses are carried out to assess the influence played by single mechanisms on the definition of the overall damage index, with the focus of providing qualitative evaluations and explicit vulnerability and fragility curves related to the most recurring and significant collapse mechanisms. This is an original contribution of the paper in the field of the vulnerability assessment of churches, since nowadays little information is available in the literature about the damage levels related to specific mechanisms, while most attention is still focused on global damage. This paper presents a novel hybrid-based methodology devoted to develop urban fragility curves and damage probability matrices to predict likelihood seismic damage scenarios for small and medium Italian urban centres, considering URM buildings only. The concept of urban fragility curve consists of a single curve mean-representative of the seismic fragility of an entire area accounting for the combinations of building classes and their percentage, then they differ from those typological. The methodology has been developed with reference to Rocca di Mezzo, a small Italian urban centre located in the central Apennine area, Italy. Based on CarTiS inventory, building classes have been firstly recognized and urban fragility curves, representative for damage scenarios at Ultimate Limit State, developed. To predict damage scenarios from low to high-intensity earthquakes, an approach to define multi-damage urban fragility curves and damage probability matrices has been also presented. To this aim, a damage scale suffered by building classes has been defined by converting the final outcomes of the AeDES form (used in Italy for post-earthquake surveys) in the damage levels provided by the European Macroseismic Scale (EMS98). Data coming from urban fragility curves have been compared with the actual damage scenario recorded in Rocca di Mezzo after the 2009 L'Aquila's earthquake, in terms of both peak-ground acceleration and Mecalli-Cancani-Sieberg scale. The achieved results showed a good accordance between theoretical predictions and actual damage scenarios, coherent also with the damage scenarios occurred in other Italian historical centres hit by severe earthquakes over the years. Thus, the methodology can provide a first important indicator to support the development of emergently plans devoted to identify priority of interventions in such areas particularly vulnerable with respect to others. Different forms of hazard can affect structures throughout their existence. The occurrence of a seismic event in areas exposed to different risks or already affected by other phenomena is highly likely, especially in countries characterized by high seismicity and equally high hydrogeological risk, as Italy. Nevertheless, the seismic safety assessment of reinforced concrete (RC) structures is commonly carried out considering the seismic action only, generally applied to an analytical model, neglecting the stress–strain state induced by previous ongoing phenomena. The aim of this work is to highlight the importance of the seismic safety assessment in a multi-hazard analysis, cumulating the action coming from two different hazards: landslide and earthquake. An existing RC building, located in an area affected by an intermittent landslide phenomenon with slow kinematics, that may also be subjected to strong earthquakes, is used as case study. The Differential Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (DInSAR) approach is used to monitor the evolution in time of the landslide. DInSAR deformation data are used to detect surface ground movements applied to building foundations. A non-linear static analysis procedure is implemented for the code-based seismic safety assessment, in two different scenarios. The seismic assessment of the case-study building is implemented in a condition of structure deformed only for gravity loads, and, then, in a state of known landslide-induced deformed configuration. A comparison is proposed between the building seismic safety assessment performed in both cases, with or without the consideration of the landslide-induced displacements, showing the importance of a multi-hazard evaluation. The structural response of unreinforced masonry buildings designed for gravity load only or with reference to obsolete seismic provisions is widely studied in the literature in order to define proper strengthening strategies and solution to mitigate the seismic risk. However, the critical analysis of the effectiveness of past used strengthening solution is still lacking. To fill such gap, the present study deals with the evaluation of the seismic performances of buildings in Campi Alto struck by the 2016 central Italy seismic sequence. The behaviour of buildings in Campi Alto is compared with that of buildings in Norcia. A large part of the buildings in these two towns was strengthened between 1980 and 2000 during the reconstruction processes following previous earthquakes which occurred in 1979 and 1997. However, the strengthened buildings in Norcia reported limited damage while a significant and widespread level of damage was detected on several strengthened buildings in the hamlet of Campi Alto. This study focuses on the buildings in Campi Alto with the aim of investigating on the reasons of their unsatisfactory behaviour. Thus, the seismic action experienced by buildings in Norcia and Campi Alto is initially compared and the main vulnerabilities of these buildings are also evaluated. Then, 20 projects of strengthening interventions submitted to the Civil Engineering Department of the Umbria Region between 1984 and 2012 have been herein analysed and discussed in order to focus on the effectiveness of the strengthening solution adopted in the past. The analyses of such projects and of the empirical damage detected after the 2016 seismic sequence is a unique opportunity to derive useful information for future applications. The development of building inventory is a fundamental step for the evaluation of the seismic risk at territorial scale. Census data are usually employed for building inventory in large scale application and their use requires suitable rules to assign buildings typologies to vulnerability classes, that is an exposure model specific for the considered vulnerability model. Several exposure models are developed proposing class assignment rules that are calibrated on building typological data available from post-earthquake survey data. However, this approach has the drawback of being based on data from specific geographic areas that have been hit by damaging earthquakes. Indeed, the distribution of building typologies can vary greatly for different areas of a country and the diffusion of one building's typology rather than another one may depend on the availability of construction material in the area, the evolution of construction techniques and the codes in force at the time of construction. This paper aims to improve the exposure modelling at regional scale, investigating the variability of masonry building typologies distribution. It proposes a methodology to recalibrate the exposure models at regional scale and evaluates the influence of the improved characterization of regional vulnerability on damage and risk assessment. The definition of relationships between damage and losses is a crucial aspect for the prediction of seismic effects and the development of reliable models to define risk maps, loss scenarios and mitigation strategies. The paper focuses on the analysis of post-earthquake empirical data to define relationships between buildings' damage expressed as usability rating or as global damage state and the associated costs for repair (i.e. direct costs) or for population assistance (i.e. a part of total indirect costs). The analysis refers to the data collected on residential buildings damaged by 2009 L'Aquila earthquake. For different usability rating or damage states, the paper presents the costs expressed in terms of percentage with respect to the reference unit cost of a new building (%Cr and %Ca for repair and population assistance costs, respectively). In particular, the costs analysis refers to undamaged, lightly or severely damaged buildings classified according to usability rating (i.e. A, B-C or E according to Italian classification) or to five different global Damage States (DSs). DSs comply with European Macroseismic Scale (EMS-98) and derive from literature available matrices properly defined to convert empirical damage to structural and non-structural components into building global damage. The %Cr probability density functions and relevant statistics derive from the analysis of actual data of post-earthquake reconstruction process, while, to determine those related to %Ca, a deep analysis of population assistance types, person/month assistance cost for each assistance form, and a methodology to associate such costs to each building are herein presented and discussed. Finally, the paper presents a relationship calibrated on empirical data to directly correlate repair costs on a building with assistance costs to their occupants. The relationships between empirical damage and direct and indirect costs herein presented are of paramount importance because they allow reliable loss scenarios to be defined by simply using literature fragility curves (defined according to empirical or mechanical approaches) aimed at evaluating the probability of exceeding different usability rating or damage states of existing buildings. The management and the safeguard of existing buildings and infrastructures are actual tasks for structural engineering. Non-invasive structural monitoring techniques can provide useful information for supporting the management process and the safety evaluation, reducing at once the impact of disturbances on the structure's functionality. This paper focuses on the exploitation of advanced multi-temporal differential synthetic aperture radar interferometry (DInSAR) products for the structural monitoring of buildings and infrastructures, subjected to different external actions. In this framework, a methodological approach is proposed, based on the integration of DInSAR measurements with historical sources, accurate 3D modelling and consistent positioning of the reflecting targets in the GIS environment. Documentary sources can prove particularly helpful in collecting technical information, to reconstruct an accurate 3D geometry of the building under monitoring, limiting in-situ surveys. The analysis of DInSAR-based displacements time series and mean deformation velocity values allows the identification of possible critical situations for buildings to be monitored. The paper presents different approaches, with increasing accuracy levels, to study the active deformative processes of the examined buildings and the related damage assessment. An insight into these interpretative approaches is given through the application of the proposed procedure to two case studies in the city of Rome (Italy), the residential building named Torri Stellari in Valco San Paolo (1951–1953) and the housing complex referred to as Corviale (1967–1983), by exploiting the whole COSMO-SkyMed data archive (both ascending and descending acquisitions), collected during the 2011–2019 time interval. A hybrid seismic fragility model for territorial-scale seismic vulnerability assessment of masonry buildings is developed and presented in this paper. The method combines expert-judgment and mechanical approaches to derive typological fragility curves for Italian residential masonry building stock. The first classifies Italian masonry buildings in five different typological classes as function of age of construction, structural typology, and seismic behaviour and damaging of buildings observed following the most severe earthquakes occurred in Italy. The second, based on numerical analyses results conducted on building prototypes, provides all the parameters necessary for developing fragility functions. Peak-Ground Acceleration (PGA) at Ultimate Limit State attainable by each building's class has been chosen as an Intensity Measure to represent fragility curves: three types of curve have been developed, each referred to mean, maximum and minimum value of PGAs defined for each building class. To represent the expected damage scenario for increasing earthquake intensities, a correlation between PGAs and Mercalli-Cancani-Sieber macroseismic intensity scale has been used and the corresponding fragility curves developed. Results show that the proposed building's classes are representative of the Italian masonry building stock and that fragility curves are effective for predicting both seismic vulnerability and expected damage scenarios for seismic-prone areas. Finally, the fragility curves have been compared with empirical curves obtained through a macroseismic approach on Italian masonry buildings available in literature, underlining the differences between the methods. The study aims at defining and characterizing a specific restoration mortar for archaeological masonry structures made with traditional materials and to assess the suitability of the mixture compared to other mortars; such a goal is crucial to develop and define interventions in the archaeological sites. The mixture was defined to ensure compatibility with ancient materials and following frequently adopted recommendations at the site, specifically by using: (1) raw materials as similar as possible to the ancient ones; (2) traditional mix design. Therefore, the mixture was made with commercial lime putty CL 90-S type and natural Phlegrean pozzolan, i.e. volcanoclastic material collected from the volcanic area located in the West of Naples in Italy. The precious and limitedly available natural pozzolan used in the experiments resulted in an exclusive mortar which is very similar to the archaeological ones. The mortar has a binder to aggregate ratio 1:3 by volume, according to traditional techniques typically encountered in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii and Vesuvius surrounding area. The evolution of the flexural and compressive strength, elastic modulus, bulk density, open porosity and ultrasonic pulse velocity has been monitored for up to 200 days, based on standard procedures. Moreover, the hardening process was monitored with Differential Thermal Analysis up to 90 days, through the evaluation of phase transitions associated with dehydroxylation and decarboxylation, considering different depths from the external surface of the mortar. The achieved mechanical properties were compatible with those of lime-based mixtures for repair interventions of ancient masonry structures. Moreover, the mortar was found to be well-suited to mitigate cracking, showing a low ratio between its stiffness and load capacity compared to other typologies of mortars used for masonry restoration. Ultrasonic pulse velocity test proved to be a reasonable complementary method to monitor the evolution of the hardened properties of the mortar. Carbonation was found to be still progressing at 90 days. The data presented provide useful and reliable information to approach the complex process of restoration in archeological sites. The National Risk Assessment 2018 is performed with the support of the purposely set up risk calculation web-gis platform IRMA (Italian Risk Maps), specifically developed by EUCENTRE (Borzi et al. [1]), and employed to share and compare data and models to evaluate the seismic risk of Italian residential buildings. The last National Risk Assessment NRA for Italy was developed at the end of 2018 by the Department of Civil Protection (DPC) in response to the specific requirement of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030 to periodically adjourn the assessment of disaster risk. The methodology adopted to perform seismic risk assessment and build national seismic risk maps was specifically developed to comply with the recent Code for Civil Protection, issuing that, in addition to a solid scientific base, risk assessment should be characterized by a wide consensus of the scientific community. As a result, six research units belonging to two Centers of Competence of the DPC, namely ReLUIS (Network of university laboratories for seismic engineering) and EUCENTRE (European Centre for Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering), collaborated under the guidance and coordination of DPC to produce the recent updating of national seismic risk maps for the residential building stock. This paper describes the methodology adopted to develop the consensus-based national seismic risk assessment and presents the main results in terms of expected damage and impact measures (unusable buildings, homeless, casualties, direct economic losses). In the last decades, several tsunamis hit international coasts and engaged scientific awareness to the retrofit of coastal buildings against tsunami loads. Structural design under tsunami loads is difficult due to the high uncertainties of the phenomenon. Local collapse mechanisms of masonry walls, like as out of plane mechanisms, have an high probability due to flexural actions; a higher flexural capacity can be reached using specific retrofit systems; in particular, this paper aims to deepen the behavior of masonry walls retrofitted with innovative retrofit systems like as natural fibers applied with inorganic mortar matrices. The retrofit of structures under tsunami actions could be an innovative research topic for international research community dealing with coastal buildings located in areas characterized by a high tsunami risk. Recent engineering applications demonstrated the innovative strengthening systems to be effective for the retrofit of existing masonry buildings. These strengthening systems are of great interest in the practical applications due to the low costs and their sustainability. In fact, the lower costs compared to the synthetic fibers allow their diffusion in emerging countries. In a first part the impact of constituents on the structural capacity of masonry elements strengthened with natural systems has been discussed. Important results have been provided in order to improve the knowledge and encourage the development of these systems in many engineering applications. Finally, the effects of retrofit systems on masonry walls under tsunami loads will be discussed in terms of critical inundation depth variations before and after the interventions. The Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) experiment is a new general-purpose fixed target facility proposed at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) accelerator to search for long-lived exotic particles associated with Hidden Sectors and Dark Matter. This paper reports on the structural design of SHiP's decay volume, a > 2000 m3 conical vessel under vacuum that should host several large particle physics detector systems. In the field of structural and seismic engineering, the design study in a very multidisciplinary international collaboration has represented a stimulating research challenge. The goal of the design of the decay is to produce a structure as light and as slim as possible to stay within the geometrical envelop determined in the physics simulations. A complete study has been performed with all the steps from the conceptual design, including the interaction with other components and the plant systems, to the assembly procedures for the decay volume realization. The complexity of the case study has been driven by the need of finding the appropriate compromise between the physics performance, the structural aspects, the executive, constructive and operational issues, and the economical constraints. The assembly strategy, the welding techniques, and the expected construction time are discussed in view of the extremely complex installation phase. Building Integrated Model (BIM) methodology is also proposed as an essential tool to coordinate the entire process of designing and managing not only the decay volume but the entire project. Inorganic composites for enhancing the in-plane shear capacity of masonry walls with irregular texture were investigated on twenty-one panels under diagonal compression tests. Three specimens were used as control and twelve specimens were strengthened with two Fibre Reinforced Mortars (FRM-A and FRM-B), characterized by a different content of fibres embedded in the lime-based matrix. The remaining six specimens were strengthened with Fabric Reinforced Cementitious Mortars (FRCM), consisting in a GFRP grid embedded in a fibre reinforced matrix (the same used for FRM-A). The influence of single-side and double-side strengthening configurations on the capacity of strengthened panels was also investigated, to point out the reduction in strengthening effectiveness in case of single-sided applications. The results showed that all the inorganic composites adopted for the strengthening techniques provided a substantial increase of shear capacity. The grid in FRCM strengthened panels played an important role in both strength and deformation capacity at peak. The different fibres content (lower than 50% in weight) in FRM systems slightly affected the overall performance of panels. Finally, analytical predictions of experimental results were reported and discussed and a preliminary analytical model for estimating the FRM shear contribution was proposed, obtaining a good agreement with test results. This paper deals with the structural behaviour and the damage assessment of Italian "modern" masonry buildings during seismic events. "Modern" masonry buildings are characterized by a box-like structural behaviour, due to the presence of effective connections between horizontal floors and vertical load-bearing walls, which prevents local mechanisms such as the overturning of external façades during earthquakes. "Modern" masonry buildings were built in Italy since the first decades of XX century in those regions classified as seismic zone and since 1937 in the whole country, following the Italian code prescriptions that implicitly interdicted the erection of "ancient" masonry buildings. Starting from an in deep historical analysis of the Italian seismic codes' prescriptions for the design of "modern" masonry buildings, the typical characteristics of the most frequent structural typologies of unreinforced masonry buildings are outlined. Then, the typical damage mechanisms observed in "modern" masonry buildings damaged after the L'Aquila earthquake (2009) are reported in relation with both the global and local behaviour of the whole building and its structural elements. The analysis demonstrated that "modern" masonry buildings experienced a good box-like seismic performance, which avoided global or local collapses, but shown severe damage to piers and spandrels related to their reduced in-plane shear capacity. Given the lack of data on such kind of structural typology, this study is fundamental for understanding and modelling the seismic behaviour of "modern" masonry buildings designed before '80s according to different seismic design prescriptions and for defining effective strengthening solutions for reducing their seismic vulnerability. A set of about 25,000 residential reinforced concrete (RC) buildings has been investigated in this study to define fragility curves. The sample originates from a wide database, reported in the online Da.D.O. (Database of Observed Damage) platform, related to about 320,000 buildings inspected in the aftermath of the nine most devastating earthquakes occurred in Italy between 1976 and 2012 (Friuli 1976; Irpinia 1980; Abruzzo 1984; Umbria-Marche 1997; Pollino 1998; Molise 2002; Emilia 2003; L'Aquila 2009; Emilia 2012). The coherence of data has been guaranteed by a thorough critical analysis among all databases. Then a refined procedure dealing with the completeness of survey campaigns at Municipality level has been applied to avoid biases in fragility fitting. The final sample is then subdivided in different structural design types, determined as a function of the evolution of seismic classification for investigated areas and the sequence of technical codes enforced through the years. The available shakemaps in terms of PGA values, derived by National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, are used to characterize seismic ground motion at buildings' site. The opportunity of enriching the sample of data with undamaged supplementary buildings, located in areas very far from epicenter but missing in the database (only because survey inspections were not required) is deeply discussed and investigated. Finally, according to such a set of data, different classes of buildings representative of existing RC building portfolio in Italy are defined and relevant vulnerability and fragility curves are determined. The paper presents a detailed report on a large sample of masonry churches damaged by the 2016–2017 Central Italy seismic sequence. The first part of the work analyses the seismic sequence to give an overview of the occurred events in terms of both ground motion parameters and macro-seismic intensities. The surveyed data are organized into a database made, to date, of 990 cases, which represent almost one-fourth of the whole surveys performed during the emergency phase. Such a significant statistical sample was used to carry out a regional scale typological analysis in order to identify the most recurrent typologies of churches present in Central Italy. The analysis of the observed damage and usability outcomes allowed drawing some conclusions on the behaviour of the inspected churches under the 2016–2017 seismic sequence. The collected data were used to create damage probability matrixes for homogeneous classes of churches at different damage levels and, successively, to implement the corresponding fragility curves in terms of PGA. This study focuses on the seismic vulnerability of masonry buildings damaged by the 2009 L'Aquila earthquake. A geo-referenced database of 32,520 masonry residential buildings was compiled in the aftermath of the earthquake under the coordination of the Italian Department of Civil Protection through the AeDES survey form. The availability of this enormous amount of data provides an exceptional opportunity to examine in depth damage data and their correlation with the main parameters available from the post-earthquake survey. The original database was grouped into 20 building classes, defined as a function of vertical and horizontal structural types. Damage levels defined according to the European Macroseismic Scale classification are used to derive damage probability matrices and relevant vulnerability curves for these classes. The influences of connection systems, the quality/regularity of the masonry wall layout and the horizontal structural type on the building response are analysed in detail. A vulnerability classification, also supported by the use of statistical post hoc tests, is used to detect a reduced number of independent classes. The parameters of the non-crossing fragility curves are determined via the maximum likelihood estimation method by adopting a lognormal cumulative function to determine the exceedance probabilities of the considered damage levels. The impact of "mixed" classes, characterized by multiple vertical and/or horizontal structural types, on the derivation of the fragility curves is also investigated. Finally, the adaptation of the general version of the fragility curves to large-scale applications based on poor (census) data is also demonstrated, leading to curves that are easily usable in regional/national seismic loss assessments. Churches struck by the earthquake sequence of 2016–2017 in Central Italy confirmed their seismic vulnerability, significantly higher than the one of other unreinforced masonry structures. This resulted in a much wider area affected by significant damages to churches, which were characterised by a rich variability of materials, typologies, dimensions and styles. In the area where significant damages were observed for ordinary buildings, most of the churches exhibited total or partial collapses. The time sequence of the main shocks helped in preventing casualties in churches although the collapse of a bell-gable in Accumoli caused victims in a neighbour house during the first event of August 24th, 2016. Damage surveys to churches were carried out on more than 4000 buildings, in a land area of about 30 000 km2 from September 2016 to May 2017. The data collected during the post-earthquake surveys represent a valuable source of information for better understanding the vulnerability of these structures as well as the effectiveness of past retrofitting interventions. This paper focuses on the structural performance of existing masonry and reinforced concrete bridges which were surveyed in the aftermath of the 2016 Central Italy earthquakes. Typical bridge vulnerabilities are first reviewed, as they provide a reference for the response of the bridges that were damaged by the 2016 earthquake swarm. Case studies are then discussed and preliminary numerical analyses are carried out to interpret the observed failure modes. In general, all surveyed masonry bridges experienced some extent of damage, particularly when built with poor-quality materials and subjected to geotechnical-induced effects. However, they offered a robust response in terms of collapse prevention. The majority of existing reinforced concrete bridges, although designed primarily for gravity loads, exhibited acceptable performance; however, local damage due to the poor maintenance of the structural systems was observed, which affected primarily the non-structural components of the bridges. Four regions of central Italy were struck by the seismic sequence of the 2016 earthquake in the country: Lazio, Abruzzo, Umbria and Marche. This highlighted the different behaviour of masonry constructions depending on the prevention actions carried out after previous earthquakes. In particular, although damaged, the masonry buildings in the historical centre of Norcia (Umbria region) behaved significantly better than those in other regions. Indeed, the strengthening interventions carried out after the earthquakes of 1971, 1979 and 1997 greatly affected the seismic behaviour of masonry aggregates (contiguous masonry structural units, MSUs) in the historical centre, which sustained limited damage and a low number of collapses. This paper discusses the empirical data on damage collected with respect to 670 MSUs by means of the first level survey form concerning post-earthquake damage, and usability assessments (AeDES). The forms completed for the survey relate to MSUs in the historical centre of Norcia and were produced by the technicians of the Umbria Seismic Risk Office. The analysis shows the correlation between the MSU characteristics of: age of construction and renovation work; type of vertical and horizontal structures; roof types and usability rating; and the damage level and extent thereof detected in vertical structures. The effectiveness of previous strengthening interventions and the analyses of the types of strengthening solution are also discussed. A case study aggregate is analyzed in detail in order to illustrate the importance of strengthening interventions on vertical bearing elements. The strengthening interventions resulted in a sound strategy to strongly reduce losses, even in a very vulnerable centre comprised of old residential masonry aggregates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The seismic assessment of the vulnerability of existing public structures, especially school buildings, is a crucial issue in seismic prone countries. Recently, several national and regional programs and activities have focussed on the mitigation of Italian public buildings. They promote the scheduling of public buildings' structural safety assessment and, when needed, the design and execution of strengthening interventions. Nevertheless, the three strong earthquakes that occurred in the last decade in Italy, Abruzzo (2009), Emilia (2012), and Central Italy (2016), confirmed the vulnerability of school buildings and the social importance of their quick re-opening after a damaging earthquake. In the present paper, the activities carried out on 1514 school building structures in the aftermath of the 2016 Central Italy earthquake sequence are reported and analysed. According to survey data collected by post-earthquake usability inspections, the paper analyses the school buildings characteristics, damage level and extent to structural and non-structural components as well as the correlation between seismic intensity and observed damage. This paper investigates on the effect of story lateral stiffness variation on the maximum elastic interstory drift ratio (IDRmax) for existing reinforced concrete (RC) buildings. Several classes of existing gravity load designed RC buildings are obtained via a simulated design approach. The presence of infills in the perimeter frames as well as different opening percentages along the height are considered. A simplified elastic analysis is performed, adopting an equivalent multistory cantilever system to represent the stiffness variation along the buildings height. IDRmax is significantly influenced by the ratio of the lateral stiffness at the second and upper stories over the lateral stiffness of the first story. Such a ratio has been found dependent on a number of geometric and configuration factors, including the variation of the opening percentage ratio. Two regression formulas are proposed to estimate, given the spectral displacement at the fundamental period T, the roof displacement and IDRmax as a function of the building height and the opening percentage at first and upper stories. Suitable modification of the formulas is also introduced to account for possible cracking of RC elements and infill panels even at very low levels of lateral drift. These expressions could be used for the simplified evaluation of the expected drift demands for buildings of existing RC typologies. Finally, the proposed formulations are applied to a number of permanently monitored buildings, comparing the calculated IDRmax with the one resulting from record processing, obtaining a fair good agreement. The Italian “Guidelines for the seismic risk classification of constructions” approved in February 2017 define the technical principles for exploiting tax deductions with respect to seismic strengthening interventions on existing buildings (Sismabonus). Tax deductions represent a unique opportunity to improve the seismic safety of the existing Italian building stock. The guidelines are very simple and allow practitioners to deal with the sophisticated concepts behind modern seismic design, such as expected annual losses (EAL) and repair costs (expressed as a fraction of the Reconstruction Cost: %RC). The seismic risk classes of buildings and the class upgrade due to strengthening interventions can be assessed using the principles included in the guidelines. The seismic risk class is the minimum between the class defined by the building safety index at the ultimate limit state and the one related to the EAL. The latter class depends on the area under the curve of the expected losses, which is easily obtained by computing the safety index converted in the return period (annual frequency) at different limit states and the relevant %RC. This paper illustrates the technical principles at the base of the guidelines and the procedure used to calibrate the repair costs associated with the different limit states using the actual repair costs monitored in the reconstruction process following recent Italian earthquakes. Finally, simple tools to estimate the cost of the strengthening interventions to improve the seismic capacity at the life-safety limit states are provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
